00:00SPEAKER- Brad, I played Fortnite for six hours yesterday.
00:02SPEAKER- Six hours?
00:04SPEAKERThat's not a real number.
00:05SPEAKER- Look, it is a real, look, the season's ending,
00:08SPEAKERyou know, and you know what that means.
00:10SPEAKER- No, I don't, I don't, but I'll pretend I do.
00:12SPEAKER- Okay, you know the classic story
00:14SPEAKERof the crickets and the ants, right?
00:15SPEAKERYou know, the cricket. - Yes.
00:17SPEAKER- The lazy grasshopper cricket or whatever
00:20SPEAKERis laying about all summer,
00:23SPEAKERand then when the winter comes,
00:25SPEAKERwell, the ants are studiously picking seeds
00:28SPEAKERand putting away food for the winter,
00:29SPEAKERand then when the winter comes and there's no food,
00:31SPEAKERwhat happens to the grasshopper?
00:33SPEAKER- He goes pro in Fortnite and makes millions.
00:38SPEAKER- Maybe, maybe, but my daughter desperately wanted
00:42SPEAKERthe Spider-Gwen skin that was the top tier reward
00:45SPEAKERfrom the Fortnite battle pass this season.
00:47SPEAKER- Okay, let me just ask, I assume FOMO
00:50SPEAKERis an essential component
00:51SPEAKERof the seasonal Fortnite progression.
00:54SPEAKER- Have you not played something with a battle pass before?
00:56SPEAKER- I have, just making sure.
00:59SPEAKER- Yeah, but when you were playing Dota
01:00SPEAKERand you get to the end of the battle pass,
01:02SPEAKERyou earn up all the way to the top tier reward.
01:05SPEAKERYou want that thing, right?
01:06SPEAKER- Look, the less recollected about Dota the better, but yes.
01:11SPEAKER- So, okay, so the Spider-Gwen one is in,
01:13SPEAKERlike last season it was Darth Vader,
01:15SPEAKERand while she hit a level 100 and caught Darth Vader.
01:18SPEAKER- She probably doesn't care about Darth Vader as much.
01:21SPEAKER- No real connection to Darth Vader.
01:23SPEAKERSpider-Verse, however, is a formative film
01:27SPEAKERfor a nine-year-old today.
01:28SPEAKER- Sure.
01:29SPEAKER- And if you're a girl,
01:31SPEAKERthe fact that there's a really cool girl character
01:34SPEAKERin that movie is important.
01:36SPEAKER- Understandable.
01:37SPEAKER- However, we've been pretty busy with other stuff
01:39SPEAKERand we haven't had as much time to play games as usual.
01:42SPEAKER- Okay, this is all clicking in my head now.
01:44SPEAKER- Yeah, there's a lot of afterschool activities
01:46SPEAKERduring this time of year,
01:48SPEAKERand like the summertime battle pass,
01:49SPEAKERpretty straightforward.
01:51SPEAKERGoing back to school battle pass,
01:52SPEAKERa little more complicated.
01:55SPEAKERSo--
01:56SPEAKER- I'm just gonna say, having played a lot of "Dota"
01:58SPEAKERand also "Destiny" in my time,
02:01SPEAKERthe feeling of the late season cram,
02:05SPEAKERlike it's right up there.
02:06SPEAKERIt's right up there with the,
02:07SPEAKER"Oh God, I haven't started on this term paper
02:09SPEAKERand it's due tomorrow."
02:10SPEAKER- Like it's, they made fucking video games work, man.
02:14SPEAKER- They made it into homework.
02:16SPEAKER- Yeah, but also, I mean, I will say,
02:18SPEAKERso we sat down, like this weekend,
02:20SPEAKERthis week we've been playing like an hour at a time
02:21SPEAKERhere and there, playing like getting a couple of games in,
02:23SPEAKERand we got her from like level 30 to level 55, right?
02:26SPEAKER- Wow, okay.
02:27SPEAKER- So last night we were sitting there looking at 55
02:29SPEAKERand I was like, "Okay, I'm gonna have a real crisis here."
02:33SPEAKER'Cause I got 45 level,
02:34SPEAKERrealistically she needed to get to level 90,
02:36SPEAKER'cause if you save your points, you get to level 90,
02:38SPEAKERyou unlock the last bit.
02:39SPEAKER- Okay.
02:41SPEAKER- And I was like, "Okay, if she doesn't make it,
02:45SPEAKERam I gonna let her buy levels?"
02:47SPEAKERLike she has V-Bucks, she gets V-Bucks spending,
02:51SPEAKERlike as part of her allowance,
02:52SPEAKERlike for doing chores around the house.
02:54SPEAKER- Oh, I forgot, I totally blanked on the fact
02:57SPEAKERthat you could just buy your way to this.
02:59SPEAKER- Yeah, like you can, day one,
03:00SPEAKERthere's always somebody running around
03:01SPEAKERwith the tier top 100 reward,
03:03SPEAKER'cause they just spend 70 bucks on it, right?
03:05SPEAKEROr 100 bucks, whatever it is.
03:08SPEAKERSo I was like, "What are we gonna,
03:11SPEAKERlike, we're gonna sit down,
03:12SPEAKERand as soon as you finish your school stuff
03:13SPEAKERon Friday afternoon, we're gonna sit down
03:14SPEAKERand just hammer this out, we're gonna get it done, right?
03:17SPEAKERAnd if she doesn't make it, if we get within like,
03:19SPEAKERyou know, if we get within like 10 levels,
03:21SPEAKERI'll pay for the 10 levels, whatever, I don't care."
03:23SPEAKER- 'Cause was there any possibility offered
03:26SPEAKERof like, say, buying your way there
03:28SPEAKERwith an advance on allowance or something along those lines?
03:31SPEAKER- She is pretty good about hoarding V-Bucks
03:34SPEAKERfor skins that she's excited about.
03:36SPEAKER- Okay.
03:37SPEAKER- So like, she probably had enough,
03:40SPEAKERshe definitely had enough to get there
03:41SPEAKERonce she was in like 20, within 20 levels.
03:43SPEAKER- Oh, okay.
03:44SPEAKER- But it would burn all of her V-Bucks.
03:45SPEAKERIt would be like, that's like,
03:46SPEAKERtwo months worth of V-Bucks probably, right?
03:48SPEAKERIt's a lot.
03:49SPEAKER- Good object lesson in future budgeting needs.
03:52SPEAKER- Yeah, but anyway, so we got going and finally I was like,
03:54SPEAKER"Okay, you're almost close enough
03:55SPEAKERthat if you wanna spend the V-Bucks you have,
03:57SPEAKERyou could just do it and we could be done at like nine o'clock."
04:00SPEAKERShe's like, "No, dad, that's cheating."
04:01SPEAKERI was like, "I wanna do it."
04:02SPEAKERShe was like, "I wanna do it for real."
04:04SPEAKER- Great.
04:04SPEAKER- So we played six hours of Fortnite.
04:07SPEAKERWe ground it out.
04:09SPEAKERAbout 11 o'clock, we finally got it done.
04:11SPEAKERAnd she donned the Spider-Gwen skin and she's very happy.
04:16SPEAKERSo now she has a Wonder Woman and a Spider-Gwen.
04:17SPEAKERShe's got all the universes, and Princess Leia,
04:19SPEAKERshe's got all the universes covered.
04:21SPEAKER- Just distinct flashbacks to the end
04:25SPEAKERof that South Park World of Warcraft episode.
04:27SPEAKER(laughing)
04:29SPEAKERAfter they have played the game day and morning,
04:32SPEAKERnoon and night for months on end
04:34SPEAKERand completely destroyed their lives
04:35SPEAKERto accomplish a grindy objective.
04:38SPEAKER- Look.
04:39SPEAKER- But now after they finished the thing, now what?
04:43SPEAKERNow we can play the game.
04:45SPEAKER- Now we can just have fun.
04:46SPEAKER- That's what she said at the end of the stream.
04:47SPEAKERAnd I was like, "Oh God."
04:49SPEAKERBut hold on, I gotta tell you, I gotta brag for a sec.
04:52SPEAKERI don't do a lot of dad bragging here
04:54SPEAKERand I apologize for the people who don't care.
04:56SPEAKERWe were in, we won like three, four games last night
04:58SPEAKERwhile we were playing.
04:59SPEAKER- Okay.
05:01SPEAKER- Couple of them, she did the clutch kills at the end
05:04SPEAKERto get the dub.
05:05SPEAKER- Wow, great.
05:06SPEAKER- At one point, she's driving around
05:07SPEAKERin an octane from Rocket League
05:09SPEAKER'cause that's how this game works now.
05:10SPEAKERThere's octane from Rocket League is in the game.
05:13SPEAKER- I didn't even know there were vehicles.
05:15SPEAKER- Oh yeah, there's been vehicles for a long time.
05:16SPEAKERYou need to play some Fortnite, Brad.
05:18SPEAKERFortnite, I'm gonna go tell you, Fortnite's pretty good.
05:19SPEAKER- Do I need to?
05:20SPEAKERAnyway.
05:21SPEAKER- It's us versus this one poor person
05:24SPEAKERand she's driving around in the car.
05:25SPEAKERI'm shooting at them, they're bouncing around like crazy.
05:27SPEAKERThey're actually really good at the game
05:29SPEAKERand she tags them and yeets them out into the blue
05:31SPEAKERand they died of the blue.
05:32SPEAKER- Great.
05:33SPEAKER- And I was like, "Dad of the year,
05:34SPEAKER"I'm feeling good about this, we're done."
05:38SPEAKER- Okay, a lot of important lessons being learned, it seems.
05:42SPEAKER- Sometimes you gotta hit somebody with a car, Brad.
05:43SPEAKERThat's the lesson.
05:45SPEAKER(upbeat music)
05:51SPEAKER- I've written here in the notes, dishwashers, huh?
05:54SPEAKERSo let me just say dishwashers, huh?
05:57SPEAKER- I love a dishwasher.
05:58SPEAKER- Holy, I forgot what it was.
06:02SPEAKER- I wish we could start over.
06:03SPEAKER- We've been, no, no.
06:05SPEAKER- No?
06:06SPEAKER- The stammering is my amazement at how life-changing it is
06:10SPEAKERto have a working dishwasher again.
06:12SPEAKER- It's nice to put the dirty dishes in the magic machine
06:16SPEAKERand then they come out clean.
06:18SPEAKER- It's incredible.
06:18SPEAKERAlso, he bought us what I took to be
06:21SPEAKERabout the cheapest dishwasher on the market.
06:23SPEAKERIt was under $500.
06:25SPEAKER- Wow, that's a cheap dishwasher.
06:26SPEAKER- It is still, I mean, to be fair,
06:29SPEAKERthe previous dishwasher, which no longer worked,
06:31SPEAKERwas about 20 years old.
06:32SPEAKER- Did it click when you turned the knob?
06:35SPEAKER- Yes, I believe so.
06:36SPEAKERThis one doesn't even have a knob.
06:37SPEAKERDo they even make someone's knobs anymore?
06:39SPEAKER- No, they haven't had a knob on a dishwasher.
06:41SPEAKER- A knob on a, probably the really expensive dishwashers
06:43SPEAKERhave knobs when I think about it.
06:44SPEAKERIt's probably like a $2,000 dishwasher
06:46SPEAKERprobably has knobs now.
06:47SPEAKER- Is that like an audio file thing?
06:48SPEAKERIs there such thing as a dishwasher file?
06:51SPEAKER- I'm sure there's a knob feel for dishwashers.
06:53SPEAKER- Like all like cherry oak, perfectly balanced knobs
06:57SPEAKERon your dishwasher panel.
07:00SPEAKER- It's all analog controls.
07:01SPEAKERYou have to turn a crank to move the dial
07:03SPEAKERto where you want the time to start.
07:05SPEAKER- Like again, he sent us the work order for this thing
07:08SPEAKERand I was like, oh, he went for the cheap one, whatever.
07:09SPEAKERAs long as it washes dishes, fine.
07:11SPEAKERBut like, holy crap, dude, like this thing,
07:13SPEAKERthis thing has a night drive feature
07:15SPEAKERwhere there's a fan in it.
07:16SPEAKER- Ooh.
07:17SPEAKER- And when it, if you run it overnight,
07:19SPEAKERit'll blow the fan, it'll exhaust the humidity out
07:22SPEAKERso that the dishes dry inside the dishwasher.
07:25SPEAKER- Well, that's, I mean, look,
07:26SPEAKERthat's how dishwasher is supposed to work, man.
07:28SPEAKER- Well, look, again, our previous dishwasher,
07:33SPEAKERperhaps not fully featured.
07:34SPEAKER- Your old dishwasher was the kind probably
07:36SPEAKERwith the big heating element on the floor
07:38SPEAKERthat like if a wooden spoon fell down
07:41SPEAKERwhile it was being washed, it would land on that thing.
07:44SPEAKERIt would end up with a big black char mark on it.
07:46SPEAKER- That's very possible.
07:47SPEAKERIt's also possible that components of that dishwasher
07:49SPEAKERstopped working a while before the full thing did.
07:52SPEAKER- Yeah, like our, so our dishwasher, we have a,
07:54SPEAKERwe have the Bosch with the,
07:58SPEAKERthey do a stainless steel drum that holds heat
08:01SPEAKERand like through some miracle of, I don't know,
08:05SPEAKERlike look, all the water condenses on the side of the tub
08:09SPEAKERand it doesn't condense on the dishes.
08:10SPEAKER- Wow.
08:11SPEAKER- And it sucks the water off of the dishes somehow
08:13SPEAKERwith magic, but you have to use rinse aid.
08:16SPEAKERSo you can't just put the soap in.
08:17SPEAKERYou have to put the stuff in that makes the water dry better.
08:21SPEAKERIt's pretty freaking good.
08:22SPEAKERI love our dishwasher.
08:24SPEAKER- It's, look, dishwasher is my new best friend.
08:27SPEAKERThis one, like I said, it's an LG.
08:28SPEAKERThis one sings to you.
08:29SPEAKERIt's like, oh, when you turn it on, especially, especially,
08:34SPEAKERI've never been around it until a few minutes ago
08:36SPEAKERwhen it finishes a load,
08:37SPEAKER'cause typically I've been running it at night.
08:39SPEAKERIt's like, it's like an eight second jingle
08:41SPEAKERthat plays when it's really establishing some fanfare
08:45SPEAKERaround this mass of clean dishes.
08:47SPEAKERIt did, you know, it reminded me,
08:50SPEAKERit reminded me more than anything of the JR line in Tokyo.
08:54SPEAKERAre you familiar with it?
08:56SPEAKERIt's one of the rails.
08:57SPEAKER- I have no idea what you're talking,
08:58SPEAKERyou said words that I know,
08:59SPEAKERbut together they make no sense to me.
09:00SPEAKER- I think, I think it stands for Japan rail.
09:02SPEAKERIt's one of the, it's one of the train lines.
09:03SPEAKER- Oh, yeah, Japan, okay. - In and around Tokyo.
09:06SPEAKERLike I'm sure you've heard the whole thing
09:08SPEAKERabout like Japanese subway stations
09:10SPEAKERand like the jingles that play.
09:12SPEAKER- Yeah, each one has its own song, yeah.
09:14SPEAKER- They're extremely lighthearted and pleasant.
09:16SPEAKERLike this very much reminded me of that.
09:18SPEAKERIt's like this dishwasher is basically a train.
09:21SPEAKER- Didn't one person write all those jingles
09:24SPEAKERfor a really long time?
09:25SPEAKER- Oh, that's possible.
09:26SPEAKER- I feel like I read it,
09:28SPEAKERI feel like I read an interview
09:29SPEAKERwith the person who wrote all the jingles.
09:31SPEAKERThis is what the internet's good for, right?
09:33SPEAKER- Yes, that's the only thing the internet is good for.
09:35SPEAKERAnyway, I am now very pro appliances singing to you.
09:39SPEAKERI think that a little more mirth in everybody's,
09:42SPEAKERyou know, go on.
09:44SPEAKER- Brad, I gotta ask you some questions
09:45SPEAKERabout your dishwasher usage, okay?
09:47SPEAKER- Yes.
09:48SPEAKER- Which way do you put the spoons in the holder?
09:51SPEAKER- Oh, I read the manual.
09:53SPEAKER- Oh, you read the manual?
09:54SPEAKERWhat does it say?
09:55SPEAKER- I read the manual cover to cover.
09:57SPEAKERThat's how excited I was.
09:59SPEAKERAlso, there were some issues after the install.
10:04SPEAKERThe installers created a significant leak under our sink
10:08SPEAKERthat we didn't discover until well after they were gone.
10:10SPEAKERAlso, the air gap needed to be replaced,
10:12SPEAKERwhich they were not in a position to do at the time.
10:14SPEAKERSo the point is we sat there staring
10:18SPEAKERat this installed dishwasher for about three days
10:21SPEAKERbeing unable to actually use it.
10:23SPEAKER- Oh no.
10:24SPEAKER- There was a lot of time for me to sit there
10:25SPEAKERreading the manual and getting increasingly excited.
10:29SPEAKERBut yeah, the manual very explicitly said,
10:32SPEAKER"Put them kind of utensil up, handle down."
10:37SPEAKER- Yeah, so my understanding is spoons and forks,
10:40SPEAKERutensil up, handle down, knives.
10:43SPEAKER- Blade down?
10:44SPEAKER- Pointy end down.
10:45SPEAKER- Oh, huh, well.
10:47SPEAKER- It's unclear to me if that's a safety thing,
10:48SPEAKERso you don't accidentally jab your hand
10:50SPEAKERwhen you're reaching in to unload the thing,
10:51SPEAKERor if it's because the knives like there's a,
10:54SPEAKERthe water flows down better or something, but.
10:57SPEAKER- There is a standing ban on putting the sharp knives
10:59SPEAKERin the dishwasher around here anyway.
11:01SPEAKER- We don't put the good knives,
11:02SPEAKERjust the like butter knives and stuff.
11:04SPEAKER- Yes, indeed.
11:06SPEAKER- Okay, so I got plastics, top shelf, bottom shelf.
11:10SPEAKER- Oh, definitely top shelf, if at all.
11:12SPEAKERLike, you know, actually now that I think about it,
11:15SPEAKERthe list of things that are forbidden
11:16SPEAKERfrom going in the dishwasher seems to be getting longer.
11:19SPEAKER- Okay, here's the real question then.
11:21SPEAKERDo you, how much stuff do you leave on the dishes?
11:25SPEAKERLike do you just kind of knock off the big chunks
11:27SPEAKERand leave sauces and goo?
11:29SPEAKER- I'm going whole hog, man.
11:30SPEAKER- You're just putting the food and everything in there?
11:32SPEAKER- I'm not even rinsing the dishes.
11:34SPEAKERLike I've typically, I've got to the point
11:36SPEAKERwhere I turn the plate vertical in the sink,
11:38SPEAKERand if things fall off of it, then fine.
11:40SPEAKERAnd if not, oh well, it goes in.
11:44SPEAKER- You're mad with power.
11:46SPEAKER- Can't be stopped.
11:50SPEAKER- Okay, Brad, I built a new PC the other day
11:52SPEAKERwith our friends at PC World, Gordon and Adam.
11:54SPEAKER- You did, I'm mad with jealousy, but go on.
11:57SPEAKER- It's so fast, it's so fast.
12:01SPEAKER- I can launch Photoshop in like three, four seconds.
12:03SPEAKERIt's the fastest computer I've ever owned.
12:05SPEAKER- Impossible.
12:07SPEAKERAs we established on the Gordon episode,
12:10SPEAKERlaunching Photoshop is the populist benchmark.
12:13SPEAKERIt's the one that truly matters.
12:14SPEAKER- Yeah, it's the, like, look, my old strategy
12:16SPEAKERon the old computer, which was fast,
12:18SPEAKERwas click the Photoshop link and then get up
12:21SPEAKERand go into the kitchen, and by the time I get back
12:23SPEAKERfrom getting a drink, it's done, right?
12:25SPEAKERI'm ready to go.
12:26SPEAKER- Yeah, you don't even have time to stand up now.
12:27SPEAKERI wanted to come in here and run a little exercise
12:29SPEAKERof how many PCs has Will built in the time
12:33SPEAKERsince I built my last and current PC?
12:36SPEAKER- Do the kiddo's PCs count?
12:38SPEAKER- No, I'm like your daily driver, let's say,
12:40SPEAKERbecause I built this machine in January, 2016.
12:46SPEAKER- Oh yeah, this is four. - That was almost seven years ago.
12:49SPEAKER- This is the fourth computer probably since then
12:51SPEAKERthat's been my main driver.
12:52SPEAKER- God damn it, I'm close, I'm very close.
12:55SPEAKER- Look, it's a business expense, Brad.
12:58SPEAKER- Oh, I know, sometime in the next month or two
13:00SPEAKERit's going to happen.
13:01SPEAKER- Okay, so this motherboard has a feature
13:03SPEAKERthat we kind of made fun of when we were building
13:06SPEAKERthe PC the other day.
13:07SPEAKERSo if you want to see the stream, the build,
13:08SPEAKERit's on PC World, it's like four hours long,
13:10SPEAKERwe're just hanging out and building PC.
13:11SPEAKERIt's not like a how to build a PC thing.
13:13SPEAKERIt's just three people who have known each other
13:16SPEAKERfor a long time, hanging out, shooting the shit,
13:19SPEAKERbuilding a PC together, and like, it turns out
13:22SPEAKERit's really nice having somebody around when you,
13:24SPEAKERlike I used to be really, I used to build like two PCs,
13:27SPEAKERthree PCs a month sometimes from when I was at Maximum PC.
13:30SPEAKERSo like I understand the basics, but a lot of stuff
13:32SPEAKERhas changed in the last 12 years since I left Maximum PC
13:36SPEAKERand stopped building PCs all the time.
13:37SPEAKER- Sure.
13:38SPEAKER- Turns out it's really nice to have somebody around
13:40SPEAKERwho builds PCs like twice a week,
13:42SPEAKERbecause Adam and Gordon were there answering questions.
13:44SPEAKERJJ from Asus popped up in the chat and JJ is like,
13:48SPEAKERhe's like their guru for how to know how everything works
13:51SPEAKERat Asus, he's the guy that you ask if you have questions
13:54SPEAKERabout their stuff.
13:57SPEAKERIt was a luxurious way to build a fancy high-end PC.
14:01SPEAKERSo when we were building this thing,
14:02SPEAKERon the front edge of the board where the SATA ports
14:04SPEAKERand stuff are, there was a PCI express power header,
14:06SPEAKERlike the six pin kind that you usually plug
14:08SPEAKERinto a video card.
14:10SPEAKERAnd we were like, what is this for?
14:11SPEAKERAnd JJ was like, oh, you plug that in, you get 60 watt
14:13SPEAKERUSB PD on the USB-C port, so you can charge your laptop
14:19SPEAKERon the front of your computer.
14:20SPEAKERI was like, I was like, in my head, I'm like,
14:23SPEAKERthat is a really stupid feature.
14:25SPEAKERI'm never ever going to use that.
14:27SPEAKERBrad. - I would use that.
14:28SPEAKERWell, no way, okay, yes, go on.
14:31SPEAKER- I have never been more wrong about something in my life.
14:34SPEAKER- I did, nope, I was gonna say, that sounds pretty good.
14:37SPEAKER- Either the iPad or the Steam Deck has been plugged
14:40SPEAKERinto that thing constantly since I built that PC.
14:44SPEAKER- That makes me even more excited
14:45SPEAKERabout building a new machine now, like, hang on.
14:47SPEAKERSo what is the utility of running that
14:50SPEAKERthrough the motherboard as opposed to like straight
14:52SPEAKERfrom one of the PSU outputs to that port?
14:57SPEAKERAnd also, is that kind of a lot of juice
14:59SPEAKERto be pumping through a motherboard?
15:00SPEAKERI don't know.
15:01SPEAKER- Well, I mean, it goes through your phone,
15:02SPEAKERso it's probably fine.
15:04SPEAKER- I guess so.
15:06SPEAKER- I mean, the problem with it is it generates a lot of noise,
15:08SPEAKERbut the USB PD port is right next
15:11SPEAKERto where the USB-C front panel header is.
15:14SPEAKER- Oh, is this not a data port?
15:15SPEAKERThis is purely for power?
15:17SPEAKER- No, it's both, so that's the benefit.
15:19SPEAKERIf you did the power directly into the,
15:22SPEAKERwell, A, PD requires data connection
15:25SPEAKER'cause it has to negotiate it.
15:26SPEAKERThere's a spec, it's not like the old way
15:28SPEAKERwhere it's just a couple of weird resistors on the line.
15:30SPEAKERNow the computer and the device talk to each other
15:33SPEAKERand it's like, okay, I can take this much power
15:35SPEAKERand I can give this much power.
15:36SPEAKERAnd then the least common denominator
15:37SPEAKERis what ends up getting popped.
15:42SPEAKERSo I think it has to be a smart power.
15:45SPEAKERThere has to be some logic in order for it to work.
15:47SPEAKERAnd if there was logic on the case end,
15:52SPEAKERI guess what I'm saying is I think this is the only way
15:54SPEAKERit could work without having to have
15:55SPEAKERsome specific hardware on the case.
15:58SPEAKERAnd also to have that port be a data port and a power port.
16:02SPEAKER- Sure.
16:03SPEAKER- You have to install a little program.
16:05SPEAKERYou have to install something on Windows
16:08SPEAKERas part of the drivers.
16:09SPEAKER- Oh, it won't just run in anything?
16:11SPEAKER- Well, okay, you have to install it on Windows
16:14SPEAKERif you want the power port to be active
16:15SPEAKERwhen it's in S3 sleep.
16:17SPEAKER- Oh, okay.
16:19SPEAKER- Yeah.
16:19SPEAKER- Wait, sleep sleep?
16:20SPEAKERLike you hibernated the computer?
16:22SPEAKER- Uh-huh, like you hit the sleep button
16:23SPEAKERor the computer went to sleep 'cause you weren't there.
16:25SPEAKERIt'll keep charging if you're in sleep
16:26SPEAKERif you have the program running.
16:27SPEAKER- That still sounds pretty good.
16:29SPEAKER- I plugged in the switch, the Steam Deck,
16:31SPEAKERand I was like, oh wow, this actually charges
16:33SPEAKERat the full rate.
16:34SPEAKERThis is amazing.
16:34SPEAKERIt didn't give me the, hey, you have problems
16:39SPEAKERwith your power delivery.
16:40SPEAKERYou're gonna charge at a reduced rate.
16:42SPEAKERI plugged in the iPad, it charged at the full rate.
16:44SPEAKERI haven't tried the switch yet.
16:45SPEAKERThat's probably the next one to do.
16:47SPEAKER'Cause I'm curious, the switch hardly charges on anything
16:49SPEAKER'cause I think it only supports 29 watts.
16:51SPEAKER- Yeah, like Nintendo has their own way of doing things,
16:54SPEAKERlet's say.
16:54SPEAKER- Yeah.
16:55SPEAKER- Yeah.
16:56SPEAKERThis USB-C transition I feel like is taking forever,
16:59SPEAKERbut I am, man, I'm ready.
17:00SPEAKERLike just plug everything into everything.
17:03SPEAKER- Oh yeah, it's time.
17:03SPEAKERLike the full promise has come true here.
17:06SPEAKERThis was a magical, magical moment.
17:08SPEAKER- Like I'm gonna start plugging my laptop
17:10SPEAKERinto the back of my G-Force
17:13SPEAKERand powering it at a thousand miles an hour.
17:16SPEAKER- One day, you're gonna plug your microwave
17:18SPEAKERinto your refrigerator and your stove into your sink.
17:21SPEAKERAnd it's all gonna just work.
17:22SPEAKERThat's the future, man.
17:24SPEAKER- We need another round of those AT&T U-Will commercials.
17:29SPEAKER- Somebody should do is remake those AT&T U-Will commercials
17:33SPEAKERfor internet of shit stuff.
17:35SPEAKER- Oh yeah.
17:36SPEAKERI'd like stupid RGB and devices daisy chained into, yes.
17:42SPEAKER- Stupid RGB what, excuse me, sir.
17:45SPEAKER- Hey Will, glad you got to pay, enjoy your new computer.
17:51SPEAKERSo would you say there's like a federally mandated statute
17:55SPEAKERof limitations on Thanksgiving leftovers?
17:57SPEAKER- I'm a Tuesday at the latest.
18:00SPEAKER- Oh boy, okay.
18:01SPEAKERThe following Tuesday, just to be clear.
18:03SPEAKER- Well, I mean, I don't eat the Tuesday before,
18:04SPEAKERthat would be weird.
18:05SPEAKER- Okay.
18:06SPEAKER- Well, I'm sorry, that was a jerk answer.
18:08SPEAKERYes, the following Tuesday.
18:09SPEAKER- I'm just trying to drive home the point
18:11SPEAKERthat you're talking a scant matter of days.
18:14SPEAKER- Look, that's Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.
18:17SPEAKERThat's five days.
18:18SPEAKER- That's what I was getting at.
18:19SPEAKERI wanted to be clear that it was a low number
18:21SPEAKERbecause apparently I am in flagrant violation.
18:24SPEAKER- Well, okay, so everything has to go out
18:29SPEAKERbefore trash the next week.
18:30SPEAKERSo that's Wednesday night trash.
18:32SPEAKER- Really? - Or Thursday night trash.
18:35SPEAKER- Okay, we were, okay, as of Friday night,
18:38SPEAKERso that's what, eight days?
18:40SPEAKER- Yeah, that's eight days.
18:41SPEAKER- We were down to some mashed potatoes.
18:44SPEAKER- Did you eat gravy with that?
18:46SPEAKER- No.
18:48SPEAKER- Mashed potatoes probably okay, I think.
18:51SPEAKER- They got reheated in a pot.
18:54SPEAKER- Okay. - For what it's worth.
18:55SPEAKER- In a pot?
18:56SPEAKER- Yeah.
18:57SPEAKER- Put them on the stove?
18:58SPEAKER- Throw them on the stove, added a little chicken broth.
19:01SPEAKER- Wow, I just put them in the microwave oven.
19:03SPEAKER- They were a little dry at this point, let's say.
19:07SPEAKER- Were they covered in the fridge, Brad?
19:09SPEAKER- Yeah, of course.
19:10SPEAKER- Okay. - In a Tupperware
19:11SPEAKERwith a sealed lid.
19:12SPEAKER- Look, I am not a food safety expert,
19:15SPEAKERbut I have listened to the food safety talk
19:18SPEAKERwith Don Schaffner and Ben Chapman for like,
19:20SPEAKERI don't know, 250 episodes or something.
19:23SPEAKERThey've been doing that podcast for a long time.
19:25SPEAKERIt's real good.
19:25SPEAKER- Wow.
19:27SPEAKER- I feel like they would probably say that's okay.
19:31SPEAKER- Okay. - But that they wouldn't do it.
19:33SPEAKER- Okay.
19:35SPEAKER- Did you get sick?
19:35SPEAKERAre you okay?
19:36SPEAKERAre you feeling good? - I'm fine, I'm fine.
19:37SPEAKER- Yeah. - Right on the bubble, huh?
19:39SPEAKER- You're probably fine.
19:40SPEAKER- A week, okay, like a week is pushing it.
19:42SPEAKERI grant that a week on anything is maybe getting into like,
19:46SPEAKERI don't know, territory, but they were good mashed potatoes.
19:50SPEAKER- Here's the thing.
19:50SPEAKERI feel like stuffing that was cooked inside the bird
19:53SPEAKERis like your highest risk food for Thanksgiving, right?
19:56SPEAKER- Of course, yeah.
19:57SPEAKER- So that's like you eat the day of, maybe the day,
19:59SPEAKERmaybe the weekend after, and Sunday night,
20:02SPEAKERyou clear that out or you're done with it, right?
20:04SPEAKER- Yeah, we don't trifle with such things.
20:06SPEAKER- The apple pie, which can't be,
20:08SPEAKERit's like if you refrigerate it, it ends up not right.
20:11SPEAKERYou know, that has to be stored on room temperature pie.
20:15SPEAKERThat's like, that has to be gone by Saturday or Sunday.
20:17SPEAKERLike we eat that, hammer through that.
20:20SPEAKER- Sure. - The pumpkin--
20:21SPEAKER- Yeah, baked goods are always--
20:22SPEAKER- The pumpkin's refrigerated, it can stay longer.
20:23SPEAKER- Okay, sure, that makes sense.
20:25SPEAKERBaked goods are always weird when like growing up
20:26SPEAKER'cause I assume it was similar for you.
20:29SPEAKERBaked goods kind of just went out on the counter
20:31SPEAKERand stayed there until they were gone.
20:33SPEAKER- Well, so pumpkin pie always lives in the fridge for me
20:36SPEAKER'cause I like it better cold, actually.
20:38SPEAKERI like a cold pumpkin pie.
20:40SPEAKERBut yeah, the apple pie, cookies, stuff like that.
20:43SPEAKERCookies are pretty, like you cover,
20:46SPEAKERI mean, it's like you cover it if it's room temperature
20:49SPEAKERand it's been cooked, you're probably okay, right?
20:52SPEAKER- Sure, yeah.
20:52SPEAKER- But if it's something that has eggs in it,
20:55SPEAKERyou want that to be refrigerated.
20:57SPEAKERIf it's something that was inside the carcass at some point,
21:00SPEAKERprobably that should be refrigerated, I don't know.
21:02SPEAKERI find, the thing I find is that the turkey,
21:04SPEAKEReven when I like did a perfect turkey and it's brined
21:07SPEAKERand like moist and succulent and delicious,
21:09SPEAKERit's still gonna be dry by like Sunday.
21:11SPEAKERAnd I'm probably looking at turkey soup at that point.
21:14SPEAKER- Sure, no, this year, my bird this year
21:17SPEAKERwas a Costco chicken, so.
21:19SPEAKER- Ooh, like a rotisserie?
21:22SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.
21:23SPEAKER- Nice.
21:24SPEAKER- The straight up, the $5 clucker.
21:26SPEAKER- Oh man, that's a feast.
21:30SPEAKER- Now I find myself in the position
21:32SPEAKERwhere there are enough of the stuffing fixings left.
21:37SPEAKERThere's like, there's a bounty of fresh sage and thyme here,
21:41SPEAKERamong other things.
21:42SPEAKER- Okay.
21:43SPEAKER- That my partner has decided that like,
21:45SPEAKERwell, still got all that stuff,
21:48SPEAKERwe're just gonna have to make more stuffing.
21:49SPEAKER- Look, there's nothing wrong with more stuffing.
21:51SPEAKER- And I'm getting two thumbs ups from the door here.
21:55SPEAKER- Yeah.
21:56SPEAKER- It makes me think we're gonna get into a situation,
21:58SPEAKERlike, okay, so then we bought more sausage yesterday
22:01SPEAKERto put into it.
22:03SPEAKER- As one does.
22:04SPEAKER- And we have some old bread that's gonna go in there,
22:06SPEAKERand it's like, are we gonna get into a situation
22:09SPEAKERwhere we constantly have something
22:10SPEAKERthat could go into more stuffing,
22:12SPEAKERand so we're just gonna be a constant leapfrog
22:14SPEAKERof forever stuffing?
22:17SPEAKER- Look, the season of eternal stuffing
22:19SPEAKERis my favorite of the Chandler novels,
22:22SPEAKERso I'm gonna say go for it.
22:24SPEAKER(upbeat music)
22:27SPEAKEROkay, Brad, I turned my ringer back on.
22:29SPEAKER- Which ringer are we talking?
22:30SPEAKER- Phone, I haven't had it on in about 10 years.
22:33SPEAKER- Wow, like, blanket straight through?
22:36SPEAKER- I'm sure there's moments when it was on, off, and on.
22:38SPEAKERSometimes I do the podcast, I flip the thing on
22:40SPEAKERto make the noise, and then I flip it back off.
22:42SPEAKER- So is that your mechanism, the little mute switch?
22:44SPEAKER- I use the, I love the hardware switch.
22:46SPEAKERI'm a huge fan.
22:48SPEAKER- Wow, so you're, wait, you're a forever silent phone guy?
22:51SPEAKERI am kind of like that, and I thought I was very much like,
22:55SPEAKERodd one out on that.
22:57SPEAKERI assume most people leave their ringer on.
22:59SPEAKERSo, I mean, think about when the last time
23:01SPEAKERyou were out in public and heard a ringtone, though, was.
23:03SPEAKERI don't think people use, I think people are all silent now.
23:06SPEAKER- You think so?
23:07SPEAKER- But the problem is I keep missing stuff
23:09SPEAKERbecause I was silent, and I don't, I often don't,
23:11SPEAKERlike, I often have my phone on my desktop,
23:13SPEAKERor like, it's not in my pocket anymore.
23:15SPEAKERAnd honestly, at this point, my upper thighs
23:17SPEAKERare so immune to noticing vibrations.
23:20SPEAKER- All of that tissue died years ago.
23:22SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like been vibrated into insensitivity,
23:24SPEAKERand it's just, it just doesn't, like,
23:27SPEAKERI need like an electroshock or something on there
23:29SPEAKERthat gives me a little like zap, like tems or something.
23:32SPEAKER- There's a little pad of necrotic flesh
23:34SPEAKERaround the place where your phone lives.
23:36SPEAKER- Oh, that sucks, now I don't like that.
23:39SPEAKER- Anyway, I turned into a constant muter
23:42SPEAKERbecause I was around open microphones so much,
23:45SPEAKERand still am. - Yeah, yeah, of course.
23:47SPEAKER- That was the main one for me.
23:47SPEAKERIt was just like, hey, instead of forgetting
23:49SPEAKERto mute this thing before we start recording,
23:50SPEAKERwhat if it's always muted?
23:52SPEAKER- I just did it a minute ago.
23:58SPEAKERI didn't realize that my podcasting profile
24:01SPEAKERon the phone doesn't mute the phone
24:03SPEAKERbecause the phone's always muted usually,
24:04SPEAKERso now I gotta go change some settings after this podcast.
24:07SPEAKER- Yeah, and I was excited initially about the watch
24:09SPEAKERkind of cluing me into more notifications
24:12SPEAKERthan I would miss on my silenced phone,
24:15SPEAKERbut now I'm finding that the notifications,
24:16SPEAKERinstead of getting buried on the phone
24:17SPEAKERare just getting buried on the watch instead.
24:20SPEAKER- I like the interface for clearing them out
24:21SPEAKERon the watch better.
24:22SPEAKER- Yeah, 'cause you can just scroll up and hit clear all.
24:25SPEAKER- Oh, well, yeah, but not really.
24:28SPEAKER- Problem solved.
24:29SPEAKER- If you're just deleting them all sight unseen,
24:31SPEAKERthen they're not exactly solving their,
24:32SPEAKERor fulfilling their purpose.
24:34SPEAKER- Brad, I believe that I said problem solved,
24:37SPEAKERand I moved my hand in a little wave to the right.
24:39SPEAKERNo, so I've turned on ringtones again.
24:41SPEAKERIt's nice.
24:42SPEAKERIt turns out the phone makes a little happy noise.
24:43SPEAKERIt's like you're a dishwasher.
24:44SPEAKERI'm like, oh, this is, this, look,
24:46SPEAKERit plays the Galaga song when somebody texts me.
24:48SPEAKERThat's the little, the one up coin sound.
24:50SPEAKERThat's nice.
24:51SPEAKER- You do custom ringtones?
24:52SPEAKER- Hell yeah.
24:53SPEAKER- Oh, I'm trying. - What, you don't?
24:55SPEAKER- I have not done a custom ringtone in about 15 years.
24:59SPEAKER- When you call me, it gives you the little fence sound.
25:02SPEAKER- Wow, okay.
25:03SPEAKER- I mean, you don't ever call me though, so.
25:04SPEAKERNo, it's everybody.
25:05SPEAKERI was just using it as an example.
25:07SPEAKER- You were trying to make me feel special.
25:08SPEAKER- Well, look, you felt special for a minute there,
25:10SPEAKERand then I ruined it.
25:11SPEAKER- I shouldn't have asked, but yeah,
25:13SPEAKERthe last custom ringtone I used was the little,
25:17SPEAKERremember when you start Portal for the first time,
25:19SPEAKERand it's playing that little Muzak version of
25:22SPEAKERStill Alive out of the radio?
25:24SPEAKER- Yeah.
25:25SPEAKER- That was my phone ringtone for quite some time,
25:27SPEAKERand I pulled that right out of the game install
25:29SPEAKERwhen the game came out,
25:30SPEAKERso that's how I know it's been like 15 years.
25:33SPEAKER- That's pretty good.
25:34SPEAKERLet's see, I do the Galaga one up coin sound,
25:35SPEAKER'cause that's a banger.
25:36SPEAKERI do the Metal Gear Solid codec sound for some stuff.
25:40SPEAKERI do...
25:42SPEAKER- That was the class.
25:43SPEAKERI mean, everybody went through the phase
25:45SPEAKERof Metal Gear codec as text message sound, right?
25:47SPEAKER- Oh yeah, and I didn't even play Metal Gear.
25:50SPEAKERI just liked the sound.
25:51SPEAKERI did 24, the Cisco phone ringtone from 24 for a while.
25:55SPEAKERThe da-da-da-da-dun.
26:01SPEAKERThe Fez one is my favorite of the ringtones, though,
26:02SPEAKER'cause it's such a pleasant sound,
26:03SPEAKERlike that Polytron sound that plays
26:06SPEAKERat the start of the game.
26:07SPEAKERSuch a pleasant sound.
26:12SPEAKERBut yeah, that's it.
26:13SPEAKERMy ringer's back on.
26:14SPEAKERI'm loud and proud.
26:16SPEAKER- Loud and proud.
26:17SPEAKERI'm sure everybody around you is just loving it.
26:20SPEAKER- Well, it turns out there's only two other people
26:21SPEAKERaround me and most of them have their ringers on too,
26:23SPEAKERso we're all in the same hell we've made together.
26:26SPEAKER- God, that household sounds like a real cacophony.
26:29SPEAKER- Look, I could tell you,
26:30SPEAKERif you ever think your house is too quiet,
26:31SPEAKERyou should get a nine-year-old.
26:36SPEAKER- Okay, it finally happened.
26:37SPEAKERI've debased myself.
26:39SPEAKERI knew this was coming.
26:40SPEAKERI've been saying this since day one.
26:42SPEAKERI am voluntarily playing a PlayStation 5 game
26:45SPEAKERon the quality mode.
26:47SPEAKER- Wait, wait, hold on.
26:49SPEAKERI play, look, I'm a quality person.
26:51SPEAKERI play everything on quality mode.
26:54SPEAKERI like a high quality experience.
26:55SPEAKERI'm not playing, look, I'm not playing.
26:57SPEAKERI didn't get a PlayStation 5.
27:00SPEAKERI didn't get some sort of weird knockoff PlayStation.
27:02SPEAKERI got the real PlayStation so I could get quality mode.
27:06SPEAKER- Wait, there's only one PlayStation.
27:07SPEAKER- I mean, there's gotta be like on Alibaba Express
27:10SPEAKERlike a weird PlayStation or something like that, right?
27:13SPEAKERSomebody made a knockoff.
27:14SPEAKER- Yes, yes, knockoff.
27:16SPEAKERMostly compatible PlayStation 5 knockoff.
27:19SPEAKER- Yeah, there's a PlayStation 5 out there too.
27:21SPEAKERThat only plays Clay Fighter versions of your games,
27:24SPEAKERClaymation versions of all your games.
27:25SPEAKERNo, okay, so, wait, I don't understand why quality mode is.
27:29SPEAKERI want it to look good.
27:30SPEAKER- I like frame rate, okay?
27:32SPEAKERI like when games are smooth.
27:34SPEAKERI find that they play better to such a degree
27:37SPEAKERthat I will take the frame rate over just about anything.
27:41SPEAKER- Oh, oh, oh, God, okay.
27:43SPEAKERMy world is shaking here.
27:45SPEAKER- I, look, I have done stupid things to get more frames
27:49SPEAKERin competitive games.
27:51SPEAKERAs we all know, frames win games.
27:53SPEAKERIt's a fact. - Proof, yes.
27:54SPEAKER- Frames win games.
27:56SPEAKERSo like I will overclock my memory
27:58SPEAKERto get three extra frames in PUBG.
27:59SPEAKERI just did a stupid huge computer upgrade
28:01SPEAKERso I can get like 500 frames a second in Fortnite.
28:04SPEAKERI have a 360 hertz monitor.
28:05SPEAKERBut when I'm playing single player shit,
28:07SPEAKERI just want it to look really good and shiny and sparkly.
28:09SPEAKERAnd like, I wanna see all the sweat glistening
28:11SPEAKERand like the puddles to be full reflective.
28:13SPEAKERLike I was, I wasn't the one counting puddles in Spider-Man
28:16SPEAKERbut like, yeah, I was puddle curious.
28:18SPEAKER- You were thinking about it.
28:19SPEAKER- I was thinking about puddles, yeah.
28:20SPEAKER- Well, okay, so that's actually kind of the transition
28:22SPEAKERthat we've hit here.
28:23SPEAKERLike I'm still on a 1080p TV, so that's part of it.
28:27SPEAKERSo it's like, why do I, why would I want a 4K mode
28:29SPEAKERwhen I, you know.
28:31SPEAKER- Does it matter on the 1080p TV?
28:33SPEAKER- Generally, most games are rendering above 1080p anyway,
28:35SPEAKEReven on a performance mode these days.
28:36SPEAKERSo I'm still getting some kind of super sampling regardless.
28:41SPEAKERThe disconnect, okay, we're talking about
28:42SPEAKERCallisto Protocol here, that's the game.
28:44SPEAKER- Oh yeah.
28:45SPEAKER- Is the game that has made the shift for me.
28:47SPEAKER- The follow-up to Player Unknown's Battlegrounds,
28:49SPEAKERBattlegrounds, Player Unknown's Next Game.
28:50SPEAKERIt's my understanding.
28:51SPEAKER- Expanding the rich universe of PUBG.
28:55SPEAKERActually, I think they may have backed away from that.
28:58SPEAKER- I think they backed away from that, yeah.
29:00SPEAKER- I think they may be formally declared at some point,
29:02SPEAKERlike this is not part of the PUBG universe anymore.
29:04SPEAKER- This is like the spiritual successor
29:05SPEAKERto Dead Space though, kind of, right?
29:08SPEAKER- Yes, but you sure do still start out
29:09SPEAKERin an orange prison jumpsuit.
29:11SPEAKERSo some of the DNA remains.
29:15SPEAKERI think I was gonna say though,
29:16SPEAKERis like generally in a lot of cases,
29:18SPEAKERand I spend enough time watching digital Foundry videos
29:21SPEAKERto know this, in most cases,
29:23SPEAKERit was largely like a resolution difference.
29:27SPEAKERLike there might be some very minor differences
29:29SPEAKERin reflection techniques or something like that.
29:31SPEAKERBut like by and large, like Horizon Forbidden West,
29:33SPEAKERfor example, does not look that different qualitatively.
29:37SPEAKEROther, I'm setting aside resolution.
29:39SPEAKERI'm talking about like reflection effects,
29:41SPEAKERshadow details, stuff like that.
29:43SPEAKERNot that different between performance and resolution.
29:48SPEAKERAnd since I'm on a 1080p TV, who cares about resolution?
29:52SPEAKER- Yeah.
29:52SPEAKER- But they finally did it.
29:54SPEAKERI was not expecting this, but Callisto Protocol,
29:56SPEAKERlike significant ray tracing in this game
29:59SPEAKERon the quality mode, like quite significant,
30:02SPEAKERlike kind of more than just like,
30:06SPEAKERmore than just the really shiny reflection stuff
30:08SPEAKERthat you expect in a very limited capacity on consoles.
30:11SPEAKER- Yeah.
30:12SPEAKER- Like they're using some kind of bounce lighting
30:14SPEAKERand reflection stuff kind of across the board.
30:16SPEAKERThey're doing ray traced shadows all over the place.
30:19SPEAKER- Is it UE5?
30:21SPEAKER- It's UE4.
30:22SPEAKER- Oh wow.
30:23SPEAKER- So they added a lot of this stuff themselves.
30:24SPEAKER- They're using Global Elimination or something like that.
30:25SPEAKERThey're doing, wow, that's cool.
30:27SPEAKER- Yeah, so they added a lot of this tech themselves to UE4.
30:31SPEAKERI knew this day was coming.
30:33SPEAKERAnd finally, here's a game that looks so much better
30:35SPEAKERin quality mode on the console that I can't resist.
30:39SPEAKERBut I feel filthy.
30:40SPEAKER- It's on my list to check out.
30:41SPEAKERSo, okay, I'm curious.
30:42SPEAKER'Cause you know, all of the stuff that I've seen
30:44SPEAKERon like Digital Foundry or your game or whatever about this
30:47SPEAKERis about image quality and performance
30:50SPEAKERis almost always focused on 4K people.
30:52SPEAKERAnd since we're both 1080p TV people still,
30:54SPEAKERI assumed that I was getting essentially no performance loss
30:57SPEAKERby using the quality mode
31:00SPEAKERbecause I'm only rendering out at 1080p regardless.
31:03SPEAKERSo I figured if I was scaling down or whatever,
31:05SPEAKERit was no big deal.
31:06SPEAKER- Oh no, those targets,
31:07SPEAKERthe performance targets are locked on console games
31:09SPEAKERgenerally like the scaler, the console scaler
31:12SPEAKERafter the image is rendered will scale it down,
31:14SPEAKERbut like that's not gonna have any bearing on.
31:16SPEAKERIt's the game is not gonna take into account
31:20SPEAKERwhat resolution the console was outputting at.
31:22SPEAKERLike those are completely separate.
31:24SPEAKER- Yeah, but I assumed that they were flipping features
31:27SPEAKERon and off that were probably fill rate dependent
31:29SPEAKERbased on the number of pixels being drawn.
31:31SPEAKER- Like that's entirely handled at the game level
31:34SPEAKERin whatever bespoke like quality performance kind of dichotomy
31:38SPEAKERthey set up in the game.
31:40SPEAKERBut if you're talking about setting it to 1080p
31:42SPEAKERin PS5 system settings,
31:43SPEAKERthat has no bearing on how the game runs.
31:45SPEAKER- Really?
31:46SPEAKER- Yes, absolutely not.
31:48SPEAKERSo like- - Wow, that is bonkers.
31:50SPEAKER- Oh yes. (laughs)
31:51SPEAKEROkay, I think we're on a voyage of discovery here.
31:54SPEAKER- I had no, I had like the fact that this is opaque to me
31:57SPEAKERis really, really worrisome for like how they communicate
32:00SPEAKERthis to normal human beings.
32:01SPEAKER- Uh-huh, yeah.
32:02SPEAKER- Yes, but yes, like you could have your PS5 set to 1080p
32:06SPEAKERin the system, but if you put it on like 4K quality mode,
32:09SPEAKERyou're still going to be rendering everything
32:12SPEAKERas if it was outputting to a 4K TV
32:13SPEAKERand just downscaling to 1080p after the fact.
32:16SPEAKERLike you're not getting,
32:17SPEAKERthere's no performance considerations there
32:19SPEAKERor like graphical features
32:20SPEAKERor that's all handled inside the game.
32:22SPEAKER- Well, so just to be clear,
32:23SPEAKERthat is completely the antithesis of how it works on PC
32:26SPEAKERwhere if you want to generate, generally speaking,
32:29SPEAKERif you want to get better performance
32:30SPEAKERin the pre-ray tracing world especially,
32:32SPEAKERyou just turn down the number of pixels
32:34SPEAKERthat the video card has to render
32:35SPEAKERand all of a sudden things will be faster.
32:37SPEAKER- Yeah, well, so that's what you're doing in the game,
32:39SPEAKERbut they always obfuscate that between, like I said,
32:41SPEAKERsome natural language options like performance mode
32:43SPEAKERor performance RT mode or quality mode or resolution mode,
32:47SPEAKERbut like the game renders at its internal resolution
32:51SPEAKERregardless of what the console is spitting out to a TV.
32:53SPEAKER- I had no idea.
32:56SPEAKER- I'm glad to have filled in a little knowledge here.
33:00SPEAKERI'm starting to maybe agree with the people who said
33:02SPEAKERthat console should just stick to one thing,
33:05SPEAKERforget about it.
33:07SPEAKER- So I played like Ratchet and Clank
33:09SPEAKERand I think Spider-Man on the performance RT mode,
33:16SPEAKERwhich was like 60 frames a second ray traced.
33:19SPEAKERI had no idea that I wasn't saving.
33:22SPEAKERI'm completely flummoxed by this, this is bonkers.
33:25SPEAKER- This, you know what?
33:27SPEAKERThis seems like kind of a mess.
33:28SPEAKER- We should maybe do a full episode about this one.
33:33SPEAKERLike I'm curious, maybe this is our excuse
33:35SPEAKERto get Digital Foundry people on and talk to them
33:37SPEAKERand let them nerd out about it.
33:38SPEAKER- This seems like a great test case for that.
33:41SPEAKERBut it's exciting.
33:42SPEAKERI mean, like UE5 games aren't even on the market yet,
33:44SPEAKERbut here we are with like last-gen engine tech
33:47SPEAKERbeing modified in a way that's pushing the consoles
33:49SPEAKERfinally a little bit, it's pretty exciting.
33:51SPEAKER- Well, so like UE5 stuff, I'm really excited.
33:54SPEAKERLike having noodled with it a little bit,
33:56SPEAKERUE5 stuff is really exciting.
33:58SPEAKERLike it makes a lot of this stuff a lot easier
34:01SPEAKERin weird ways than it is with the UE4.
34:05SPEAKERLike Global Illumination is literally going to change
34:08SPEAKERthe way people make games.
34:10SPEAKER- Totally, totally.
34:11SPEAKERLike I feel like people are not believing me
34:13SPEAKERwhen I say this necessarily across the board,
34:15SPEAKERbut games we're at, we're on the verge
34:18SPEAKERof an inflection point in the way the games
34:20SPEAKERon these consoles are going to look.
34:22SPEAKER- Well, and it's one of those things it's like,
34:24SPEAKERremember the old days when there would be like,
34:26SPEAKERwhen there was a really visible difference
34:28SPEAKERbetween early gen games and late gen games
34:30SPEAKERon the same generation.
34:31SPEAKERLike this is what's going to provide that jump
34:33SPEAKERon this generation.
34:34SPEAKER- I think like I always, I tend to think of it
34:36SPEAKERas the Gears of War moment.
34:38SPEAKER- Yeah.
34:39SPEAKER- Because Gears of War is just taking longer
34:41SPEAKERthis generation for a variety of external factors,
34:43SPEAKERbut Gears of War, if you remember,
34:44SPEAKERcame out about a year after the 360 shipped
34:47SPEAKERand holy shit, you put Perfect Dark up next to Gears of War.
34:51SPEAKERThere is no contests.
34:53SPEAKERLike I distinctly remember that game coming out
34:55SPEAKERand going like, oh, this is why we have these new consoles.
34:58SPEAKER- Look, everybody's so thick.
34:59SPEAKER- Yes.
35:00SPEAKER- How did they make them so thick?
35:01SPEAKERWe couldn't have done this on the last generation.
35:03SPEAKER(upbeat music)
35:06SPEAKERBrad, I have a confession.
35:08SPEAKER- Go on.
35:09SPEAKER- I'm finding that it's getting harder to learn new things.
35:14SPEAKER- Can't teach an old will.
35:17SPEAKER- Wow. - I'm sorry.
35:17SPEAKER- Thanks. - Go ahead.
35:18SPEAKER- Damn son. - Go ahead.
35:19SPEAKER- No, it's okay.
35:20SPEAKERSo we talked about the guitar a couple of weeks ago,
35:24SPEAKERbut the guitar is a direct response to this.
35:27SPEAKERIt's like my subconscious saying,
35:28SPEAKERyo, you need to work on some stuff
35:30SPEAKERthat you've never done before
35:30SPEAKERto make your brain more plastic again,
35:33SPEAKERbecause I'm getting stupid up here.
35:35SPEAKERYeah, I gotta get stretchy.
35:37SPEAKER- You need some stretchy gray matter.
35:38SPEAKER- Yeah, so I got that,
35:42SPEAKERI got the keyboardio 100, model 100,
35:46SPEAKERthe columnar split keyboard and I set it up
35:50SPEAKERand I did it for about 15 minutes,
35:53SPEAKER15 minutes a day for the first week or so.
35:56SPEAKERAnd then I got real busy at work and I was like,
35:57SPEAKERI can't deal with this.
35:59SPEAKERLearning a new keyboard right now is too hard.
36:01SPEAKER- Can't afford the downtime.
36:02SPEAKERI think of this as the VIM phenomenon.
36:05SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, I can see that.
36:07SPEAKER- I would love to switch to VIM for a variety of reasons
36:09SPEAKERif I ever had the time to get up to speed on it,
36:11SPEAKERbut the amount of drag it creates on your workflow
36:14SPEAKERin the interim until you're good at it
36:16SPEAKERis just too much to deal with when you're this busy.
36:19SPEAKERAnd so you never actually get around to learning it.
36:22SPEAKERAnd so I continue to use nano, like a commoner.
36:30SPEAKER- Wow, Brad, look, we can edit this part out if you want,
36:35SPEAKERit's okay, we don't have to put this in there.
36:38SPEAKER- Go on.
36:39SPEAKER- So, okay, so part of my strategy
36:42SPEAKERfor the last part of this year,
36:43SPEAKERand it's gonna be my 2023 strategy
36:45SPEAKERis to make myself learn new shit all the time.
36:48SPEAKERI bought Affinity Pro, Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer
36:53SPEAKERin that they had a sale where you get, buy it,
36:55SPEAKERreally you pay them like a hundred bucks
36:57SPEAKERand you get all platforms, all software forever,
37:01SPEAKERor until this version is done basically,
37:02SPEAKERwhich would seem like a pretty good deal to me.
37:05SPEAKERAnd I've been using that instead of Photoshop for every,
37:07SPEAKERlike there's a couple of things
37:08SPEAKERthat I have to use Photoshop for because it worked,
37:09SPEAKERbecause we do, we have a bunch of like templates
37:11SPEAKERand stuff that are layered and all that, I need those.
37:15SPEAKERBut for the most part, Affinity has been dope
37:17SPEAKERand it's a pretty easy transition.
37:19SPEAKERI'm committing,
37:20SPEAKERI'm not doing any more Premiere Pro videos this year,
37:23SPEAKERI'm doing a DaVinci Resolve from here on out.
37:25SPEAKER- Great.
37:28SPEAKER- At some point this year,
37:29SPEAKERI'm gonna figure out how to get off of Audition
37:33SPEAKERfor the podcast.
37:34SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm just, I'm going to say, I mean,
37:36SPEAKERat the top level, I am way into your philosophy
37:38SPEAKERof always be learning new things
37:40SPEAKERand I am going to take a cue from you officially.
37:42SPEAKER- Yeah.
37:43SPEAKER- But then secondarily,
37:44SPEAKERI'm also way into your effort to get off of Adobe.
37:47SPEAKER- Look, I think these are both laudable goals.
37:49SPEAKERAs the person who made the goals
37:51SPEAKERand the person who has to do them,
37:52SPEAKERit's been a two-year process to get off of Adobe so far.
37:55SPEAKER- Yeah, and like, I mean, I don't know about you,
37:57SPEAKERI don't know if it's more of the pricing,
37:59SPEAKERthe ongoing pricing model or the quality of the software
38:01SPEAKERor all of the above, but...
38:03SPEAKER- Yeah, it's the general shitification of the software,
38:06SPEAKERhonestly, is it?
38:07SPEAKERLike it's the fact that every year they add new features
38:13SPEAKERthat are really cool,
38:13SPEAKERbut the main thing that I use on the day to day
38:15SPEAKERis like appreciably worse each time
38:18SPEAKERthey release a new version for like three months.
38:21SPEAKER- Or stagnant, if nothing else.
38:23SPEAKER- I mean, stagnant would be better
38:25SPEAKERexcept for that I'm paying 500 bucks, 600,
38:28SPEAKERwell, I'm paying 300 bucks here
38:29SPEAKER'cause I always call them and complain.
38:30SPEAKERBut the point is, like, I'm paying a lot of money every year
38:35SPEAKERfor this software that I use for work.
38:36SPEAKERIt's like a valid business expense.
38:38SPEAKERWe have to have, I mean, we don't have to have it.
38:40SPEAKERThere are other options now.
38:42SPEAKERI want to get clean, that's what I'm saying.
38:45SPEAKER- Understandable.
38:46SPEAKER- And I also want to, like the guitar has been really fun.
38:50SPEAKERLearning new stuff has been fun.
38:51SPEAKERGene's been taking pottery class.
38:52SPEAKERI might start a pottery class.
38:53SPEAKERThat seems like it'd be neat.
38:55SPEAKERUse your hands for stuff.
38:56SPEAKERI don't know.
38:57SPEAKERLet's get crazy.
38:58SPEAKERLet's learn all sorts of new stuff, like Vim.
39:00SPEAKER- Oh, man, Vim, 2023, the year of Vim.
39:04SPEAKER- Yeah, something nobody's ever tried before.
39:06SPEAKERHey, I'm gonna switch to Vim, guys.
39:09SPEAKERI'm never switching to Vim.
39:10SPEAKER(upbeat music)
39:13SPEAKER- Brad, I lost another fucking controller at somebody's house.
39:16SPEAKER- Another?
39:17SPEAKEROkay, I've never lost one period at someone's house.
39:19SPEAKERI need to know how this is happening.
39:20SPEAKER- Okay, so at some point in the past,
39:23SPEAKERI had three Nintendo Switch Pro controllers,
39:26SPEAKERwhich are not inexpensive controllers.
39:28SPEAKER- Damn, that's a, wow, yeah.
39:30SPEAKER- Well, there's three of us.
39:31SPEAKERWe play Mario Kart.
39:32SPEAKERWe play, you know, we play the Smash.
39:34SPEAKERWe play Animal Crossing.
39:36SPEAKEROh yeah, I mean, all games that one can play
39:38SPEAKERwith multiple controllers on one device.
39:40SPEAKER- Canonically, the best Switch controller.
39:42SPEAKERI mean, like the Joy-Cons are what they are for portable,
39:45SPEAKERbut if you're using a Joy-Con on the couch.
39:49SPEAKER- I like, look, I played most of Breath of the Wild
39:51SPEAKERwith the Joy-Cons separated on either side of my leg
39:53SPEAKERso I didn't hurt my wrists, right?
39:55SPEAKERLike I get that.
39:55SPEAKER- I can't, it feels so unnatural to have,
40:00SPEAKERugh, I'm like cringing thinking about it,
40:02SPEAKERlike having both arms. - Put your hands
40:03SPEAKERup behind your head.
40:04SPEAKER- Both arms just limp at your sides on the couch
40:08SPEAKERwith your thumbs twitching, there's something.
40:11SPEAKER- It's really comfortable.
40:12SPEAKER- Unsettling.
40:13SPEAKER- Look, you wanna hear something worse?
40:14SPEAKERI did it while I was wearing a slanket or an Ooty
40:16SPEAKERor something and so I had my hands inside the blanket
40:19SPEAKERwith the two controllers.
40:20SPEAKERIt looked, it probably looked filthy.
40:22SPEAKERAnyway.
40:22SPEAKER- Slanket is exactly the kind of perverse term
40:25SPEAKERthat you would use along with that posture of video gaming.
40:28SPEAKER- It's a blanket with sleeves, Brad.
40:31SPEAKERSo, okay, so the thing is you go over to people's houses,
40:36SPEAKERyou play the games, sometimes my daughter goes over
40:40SPEAKERto a house for a sleepover.
40:42SPEAKERShe's like, hey, they don't have enough Switch controllers,
40:44SPEAKERcan I take the Switch controller?
40:45SPEAKERSure. - Oh no.
40:47SPEAKER- I'm actually, oh, they, can we take two?
40:50SPEAKERYes, absolutely, you can take two.
40:52SPEAKERDon't forget to bring the fucking controller back.
40:56SPEAKERYou're never gonna guess what happened.
40:58SPEAKER- Go on.
40:59SPEAKER- She didn't bring the controller back.
41:00SPEAKERWe came back with one, but not two.
41:02SPEAKERShe's like, I'm pretty sure I only took one.
41:03SPEAKERI was like, you absolutely fucking Lutely took two,
41:05SPEAKERI put them in the bag myself.
41:06SPEAKERWe are now down another Switch controller,
41:09SPEAKERso we only have one Switch Pro controller in this house now.
41:11SPEAKER- Wait, surely they can be retrieved.
41:14SPEAKER- You would think that.
41:15SPEAKER- What, what's the obstacle?
41:17SPEAKER- Have you seen the, like, I'm gonna go and tell you,
41:19SPEAKERwhen you have, when you're a parent,
41:21SPEAKERif you get weird about, kids forget shit all the time,
41:24SPEAKERit happens, right, it's fine.
41:27SPEAKERPeople who don't play video games don't know
41:28SPEAKERhow much controllers cost, so they don't think
41:31SPEAKERabout controllers as a thing of value,
41:33SPEAKERthey think about it as the thing that came
41:34SPEAKERwith their Atari 2600 40 years ago.
41:36SPEAKER- That seems easily rectified, though.
41:39SPEAKER- There's a certain amount of chill you have to be
41:42SPEAKERabout this shit, or else you become the crazy parent.
41:44SPEAKERI've watched it happen, I don't wanna be the crazy parent.
41:49SPEAKERSo sometimes, you just suck it up.
41:52SPEAKERAnd I've been, this is one where I'm having to suck it up,
41:55SPEAKERI've gone over to people's houses to play Smash
41:57SPEAKERand other games before, and like, hey,
41:59SPEAKERyou have a bunch of controllers, can you bring some controllers?
42:01SPEAKERSure, and then I just forget to bring one,
42:02SPEAKER'cause maybe there's some beer involved,
42:04SPEAKERand like, you have a little bit too much fun,
42:06SPEAKERyou're playing the games with the adults,
42:07SPEAKERand you're like, oh, I'll get it later,
42:08SPEAKERand then you just forget, and then it becomes,
42:10SPEAKERit's over there for so long that you're like,
42:11SPEAKERoh, fuck, I can't ask about it now,
42:13SPEAKER'cause it's been like six months.
42:14SPEAKER- Yeah, okay, sure, statute of limitations, I guess.
42:17SPEAKER- Yeah, so this is the second Switch Pro controller
42:20SPEAKERwe've lost to either me drinking and playing Smash,
42:23SPEAKERor child mistakes.
42:26SPEAKER- I feel like, just for people who don't know,
42:28SPEAKERwe should mention these things are like 70 bucks.
42:31SPEAKER- I bought one of 'em on sale, for what it's worth,
42:33SPEAKERbut yes. - Okay, that's fair.
42:34SPEAKER- You know what you should start doing is,
42:36SPEAKERthey make enough different versions of that thing.
42:39SPEAKERYou should just get the ones that look weird,
42:41SPEAKERand then it will be pretty obvious which ones are yours.
42:43SPEAKER- This is it, I bought one of the iM8Bit Switch controllers
42:47SPEAKERwith the little dock.
42:48SPEAKER- Oh, you straight up went off brand, interesting.
42:50SPEAKERI mean, even if you stay in the Nintendo realm,
42:52SPEAKERthey make like ones with different colored grips,
42:54SPEAKERand they make like Animal Crossing branded ones,
42:56SPEAKERand if you just stick to like non-standard looks,
42:59SPEAKERI think that might help.
43:01SPEAKER- I feel like in order to do that now,
43:03SPEAKER'cause there's not a current colorway on brand
43:06SPEAKERthat is not standard available,
43:09SPEAKERI'd have to pay like $120 for the controller,
43:11SPEAKERwhich is maybe not a good idea,
43:13SPEAKERgiven how rapidly we lose them in this house.
43:16SPEAKER- Hey, you like the mod stuff,
43:17SPEAKERit could give some aftermarket chills.
43:18SPEAKER- No, that's a bad, look, the iM8Bit one
43:22SPEAKERhas been pretty good so far, it has a little dock,
43:24SPEAKERso it charges on the, it's always charged, I like it.
43:27SPEAKERI can plug it into the PC if I want,
43:28SPEAKERI can hook it up to Bluetooth with the PC,
43:30SPEAKERit has that little, has their little brick dongle,
43:32SPEAKERthere's a door on the bottom of the dock
43:34SPEAKERthat has a little brick dongle in it,
43:35SPEAKERseems pretty good so far.
43:36SPEAKERHaven't actually used it,
43:37SPEAKER'cause I don't play Switch games ever, it turns out.
43:39SPEAKERSo probably a mistake in retrospect
43:41SPEAKERto invest in a Switch controller at this point in 2022,
43:45SPEAKERbut I hate playing Mario Kart
43:47SPEAKERwhen we play Mario Kart as a family with the Joy-Cons, so.
43:50SPEAKER- Fair, fair, I was going to point out
43:52SPEAKERthat there might be better controllers on the horizon, but.
43:57SPEAKER- Have you really never lost a controller someplace,
43:59SPEAKERyou've never forgotten one?
44:00SPEAKER- No, I don't really tend to take them around,
44:03SPEAKERwell, let's be fair, my line of work controllers are,
44:07SPEAKERthe surplus controllers are kind of everywhere.
44:10SPEAKERI mean, there were like,
44:12SPEAKERthere were dozens to hundreds of controllers
44:14SPEAKERin the various offices I have worked in.
44:16SPEAKER- I mean, okay, yes, I had an Infinity of Xbox 360
44:20SPEAKERand Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers,
44:24SPEAKER'cause like we had a bunch of Oculus dev kits
44:27SPEAKERand every Oculus dev kit came with an Xbox One controller.
44:31SPEAKERSo I never need to buy an Xbox One controller again,
44:34SPEAKERlike I'm good.
44:35SPEAKER- There was a time at GameSpot
44:37SPEAKERwhere there was a gigantic bin full of Xbox 360 controllers.
44:41SPEAKERI mean, there were dozens of them in there.
44:42SPEAKER- Yeah, I have a lot of Xbox 360 controllers
44:45SPEAKER'cause you had a lot of Xbox 360s for reasons
44:46SPEAKERwe don't need to get into here.
44:50SPEAKERBut yeah, the PlayStation controllers,
44:53SPEAKERSwitch controllers always have been precious,
44:54SPEAKERso I don't know.
44:57SPEAKER- Colorways, man, you gotta make your mark on those things.
45:01SPEAKERPlant your flag, stamp your stamp.
45:04SPEAKERThat's a blue Xbox controller.
45:05SPEAKER- I'm the blue controller guy.
45:06SPEAKER- Okay, hey, look, everybody needs a call, wow.
45:09SPEAKEREverybody needs a calling card, everybody needs a thing.
45:12SPEAKER- Well, this is the thing.
45:13SPEAKERI went to Gary's house a few weeks ago,
45:15SPEAKERwe were playing games,
45:16SPEAKERdidn't take my own controller that time.
45:18SPEAKERAnd they have color-coded controllers for the whole family.
45:22SPEAKER- I see, that's a great idea. - Mom has one color,
45:23SPEAKERGary has one color, the kiddo has one color.
45:25SPEAKERIt makes everything straight forward,
45:27SPEAKERso you just have your controller and you're done.
45:28SPEAKER- Like the family that-
45:30SPEAKER- Controller colors.
45:31SPEAKER- Game, the family that controllers together.
45:35SPEAKER- Doesn't lose controllers at people's birthday parties.
45:38SPEAKER- I mean, it doesn't quite rhyme, but I'll take it.
45:40SPEAKER(upbeat music)
45:43SPEAKER- If you told me that I would be gathering around
45:46SPEAKERthe living room TV to watch an Atari video game at night
45:50SPEAKERin 2022 with my family,
45:54SPEAKERI would have told you you were crazy.
45:56SPEAKER- I think a lot of things fall into that category these days,
45:58SPEAKERbut yes, that's a big win.
46:00SPEAKEREverybody's watching the Atari show.
46:02SPEAKER- Yeah, that Atari 50 game,
46:04SPEAKERI think you guys talked about on "Nextlander" a lot,
46:06SPEAKERbut it is- - Incredible.
46:10SPEAKER- What a treat it is to open that thing up.
46:12SPEAKERAnd like, I barely, I played the games,
46:16SPEAKERI played some of the games quite a bit.
46:17SPEAKERI played a lot of "Cavans of Mars."
46:18SPEAKERI played "Vector Sector,"
46:19SPEAKERthe thing that our friend Jeremy Williams made.
46:22SPEAKERThat's the kind of tribute game to all their old vector
46:25SPEAKERgames, like "The Tempest" and "The Battle Zones"
46:27SPEAKERand "The Asteroids" is incredible.
46:30SPEAKERLike it is so good.
46:32SPEAKERBut like the other night I loaded up, I was like,
46:34SPEAKER"Hey Gina, you grew up with the 2600,
46:36SPEAKERyou had one of these when you were a kid?"
46:37SPEAKERShe's like, "Yeah, absolutely."
46:39SPEAKERLet's listen, and we just watched documentaries.
46:40SPEAKERWe watched the little documentary clips
46:42SPEAKERfor like an hour, hour and a half.
46:44SPEAKERAnd like enjoyed the story of the first,
46:48SPEAKERlike the first space war cabinets being tracked down
46:51SPEAKERin Dixon, California.
46:52SPEAKER- Oh, that one's so touching.
46:54SPEAKER- That one's good.
46:55SPEAKERThe, "Hey, we're Atari guys getting high
46:59SPEAKERwhile they were making video games."
47:00SPEAKERYes, 100% is so good.
47:02SPEAKER- That is, I mean, if you're gonna put one video clip
47:05SPEAKERof talking to old Atari dudes into that thing,
47:08SPEAKERit's that one, it's "Tell me about the drugs."
47:10SPEAKERI mean, it's legendary.
47:11SPEAKERLike the cocaine and hot tub stuff
47:14SPEAKERwas such pervasive Atari apocrypha
47:16SPEAKERthat they needed to get somebody on the record
47:17SPEAKERto talk about it.
47:19SPEAKER- Well, I like, it's the kind of, it's the kind of,
47:22SPEAKERlike when the guy comes back, he's like,
47:24SPEAKER"Oh yeah, we were doing drugs all the time."
47:26SPEAKERLike, you know that whoever was doing the shoot
47:28SPEAKERhad to just be like, "Yeah, fist bump.
47:31SPEAKERYes, we got it, guys."
47:33SPEAKER- This is the golden material.
47:35SPEAKER- Yeah, but like, it's like, those are the high hits.
47:38SPEAKERIt's all, it's all so fun.
47:40SPEAKERLike listen to the stories about them making Fire Truck,
47:44SPEAKERthe Fire Truck Simulator game where it had two wheels
47:46SPEAKERwhere one person stands behind the other person.
47:49SPEAKERIt's such a, like, I've never even seen that cabinet before.
47:52SPEAKERI think it comes to California,
47:53SPEAKERthat somebody brings one to California extreme sometime.
47:55SPEAKERBut yeah, it is, it has been an absolute delight
47:59SPEAKERand I've never in a million years would have expected
48:01SPEAKERthat my wife who, you know, loves games,
48:05SPEAKERbut not at the level that you and I do, I think,
48:08SPEAKERdoesn't, is an obsessive, was like,
48:13SPEAKER"Hey, can we watch that one now?
48:14SPEAKERCan we watch that documentary now?"
48:17SPEAKER- There's something about that footage
48:18SPEAKERand this is hard to qualify,
48:20SPEAKERbut those guys are like kind of just old enough
48:22SPEAKERthat they're in like demeanor and attitude and stuff.
48:27SPEAKERThey just feel like they're from a little bit
48:29SPEAKERof a different era, you know?
48:31SPEAKERDoes that make sense?
48:31SPEAKER- Yeah, not in a bad way.
48:32SPEAKERLike sometimes you say that you mean like,
48:34SPEAKER"Hey, oh yeah, I'm not racist, but."
48:36SPEAKER- No, no, no, I didn't mean that at all.
48:38SPEAKER- Yeah, no, no, no, I know, I just wanted to-
48:39SPEAKER- Just like the, just their thought processes
48:41SPEAKERand the way they speak and stuff, you know,
48:42SPEAKERit's just a generational thing.
48:43SPEAKERIt's that they were, well, they're probably born
48:46SPEAKERin the forties, if I had to guess,
48:48SPEAKERforties to early fifties for the most part.
48:52SPEAKER- Yeah, I would guess they're like my parents' age
48:53SPEAKERor 10 or 15 years younger at the younger,
48:56SPEAKERthe young people were 15 years younger probably.
48:58SPEAKER- I guess like, again, this is hard to explain,
49:02SPEAKERbut it's something about like previous generations
49:04SPEAKERof nerds, I guess, like.
49:06SPEAKER- Yeah.
49:07SPEAKER- It was like the people that developed the Unix, you know,
49:08SPEAKERor the people that created the first Atari games or whatever.
49:11SPEAKERIt's like they conceptually they're into the same shit
49:14SPEAKERthat we are, but they're from a different era,
49:16SPEAKERso it takes a different form, does that make sense?
49:18SPEAKER- Well, yeah, like the people that were like,
49:21SPEAKERwe grew up writing basic code and those guys
49:23SPEAKERwere growing up soldering circuits together
49:25SPEAKERand making the weird shit come up on the oscilloscope, right?
49:27SPEAKER- That's exactly it, there's like a shared passion
49:31SPEAKERand shared philosophy, but the particulars are different,
49:34SPEAKERyou know, and like the just kind of the things
49:36SPEAKERthat they think about and talk about are slightly different.
49:38SPEAKERYou know, it's just, it's a fun little window into history.
49:41SPEAKER- Yeah, and like the different approaches,
49:43SPEAKERlike some people, the thing that's interesting
49:46SPEAKERabout those Atari games especially is like,
49:48SPEAKERthey designed the game first and then they figured out
49:50SPEAKERwhat the marketing for it was, so like, it's not like,
49:52SPEAKERI mean, Lunar Lander is probably the obvious, not example,
49:55SPEAKERbut like Yars Revenge, the thing about Yars Revenge,
49:58SPEAKERthey talk about it a lot and it's really,
49:59SPEAKERit's an interesting conversation, how that came about.
50:02SPEAKERAnd the guy was like, I just wanted to make cool colors
50:04SPEAKERand lights happen on the screen as fast as I could
50:06SPEAKERand see what happened and like one of the,
50:10SPEAKERlike it turns out Yars Revenge, even in 2022,
50:13SPEAKERstill a banger, that is a good game.
50:15SPEAKER- I like to imagine that the entire genesis of Yars Revenge
50:17SPEAKERwas so that they'd have an excuse to have somebody paint
50:19SPEAKERthat disgusting gigantic fly on the cover.
50:23SPEAKER- I see, I didn't, when I was playing Yars Revenge as a kid,
50:27SPEAKERwhich I didn't, I only one friend had Yars Revenge
50:30SPEAKERand nobody really understood how to play it.
50:33SPEAKERI wasn't sure whether you were the fly
50:34SPEAKERor whether the fly was the monster you were going to get
50:36SPEAKERthe bomb from and I didn't understand why you had to touch
50:39SPEAKERthe monster 'cause usually you don't touch the monster
50:41SPEAKERin video games, that's usually a bad idea.
50:42SPEAKERIt's like, it's confusing.
50:44SPEAKER- You know, I feel like sitting down in front of a 2600 game
50:47SPEAKERfor the first time and not immediately understanding
50:49SPEAKERwhat it is you're controlling or how
50:51SPEAKERis a pretty common experience.
50:53SPEAKERLike which one of these am I actually moving?
50:55SPEAKERCan't quite tell how my joystick movements are mapping
50:58SPEAKERto what's happening on screen.
50:59SPEAKER- I really, really, okay, so a couple of things
51:02SPEAKERI wanna make sure we hit.
51:03SPEAKEREverybody should play Vector Sector
51:04SPEAKERor watch somebody play Vector Sector
51:05SPEAKER'cause it is incredible.
51:07SPEAKERThe other remakes that they did,
51:08SPEAKERlike the re-imagined games that they did
51:10SPEAKERare also all freaking like the Yars Revenge remake
51:13SPEAKERis the other one I spent the most time with
51:15SPEAKERprobably at this point, but they're all good.
51:18SPEAKERThe other part is like, I hope that this thing sells
51:23SPEAKERwell enough that Activision and other places come to them
51:27SPEAKERand are like, hey, we would like you to do this
51:29SPEAKERfor Activision 'cause like the time to tell these stories
51:32SPEAKERis now 'cause the folks that made these games
51:34SPEAKERare not getting younger.
51:35SPEAKERLike some of them have already passed
51:38SPEAKERand they're at a place now where it's been long enough
51:42SPEAKERthat most of the people are able to be honest
51:44SPEAKERabout how it actually worked, which is the best time.
51:48SPEAKERLike it's the best time to have these conversations.
51:50SPEAKER- They're all retired, they have nothing more to fear.
51:52SPEAKERThey can just lay it all out there.
51:54SPEAKER- Yeah.
51:55SPEAKER- Dude, yes, I would, nothing would make me happier
51:59SPEAKERthan Digital Eclipse having to spin up
52:00SPEAKERan entire new business unit to handle all of the business
52:03SPEAKERcoming in from other companies that want them doing
52:05SPEAKERthe same thing because man, I just,
52:07SPEAKERI want these to happen constantly.
52:10SPEAKER- Well, and like the thing about this,
52:12SPEAKERand just to be clear, we have a lot of friends,
52:13SPEAKERDan Ammerick and Drew and Chris Koehler
52:17SPEAKERand Michael who's been on the show.
52:20SPEAKER- Yeah, but like it's like divorced from that.
52:23SPEAKERLike I, you know, people take it as this however they want,
52:28SPEAKERlike the personal connection has nothing to do
52:30SPEAKERwith the quality and depth of this product.
52:34SPEAKERThe testament to this is that the entire,
52:36SPEAKERalmost the entirety of my connection to the Atari 2600
52:39SPEAKERis trying to play the "Empire Strikes Back" game
52:42SPEAKERand pitfall on Joe Patterson's Atari 2600
52:46SPEAKERat his sixth birthday party
52:48SPEAKERand like having to fight the other kids for time
52:50SPEAKERto the point that finally when they had outside
52:51SPEAKERto do something, I was just like,
52:52SPEAKERI'm gonna stay inside and play the Atari 2600
52:54SPEAKERand nobody else is here, I can take three turns at a time.
52:57SPEAKER- You know, I mean, this wouldn't matter to anybody
53:00SPEAKERbut the person talking about it,
53:01SPEAKERbut it would almost be fun to sit down
53:02SPEAKERand go through everybody's recollection of like the names
53:05SPEAKERof the kids that you were friends with
53:06SPEAKERso you could play the game that they had
53:08SPEAKERand what game it was.
53:11SPEAKERI certainly have a handful of those in my background
53:14SPEAKERof like, oh yeah, I'll go play at that kid's house
53:17SPEAKER'cause he just got "Super Mario Brothers 2."
53:19SPEAKER- Yeah, like the man, when I won't say who it was,
53:23SPEAKERbut when somebody got "Legend of Zelda"
53:25SPEAKERand it was still hard to get those cartridges
53:27SPEAKERand also it was like $70 or something really expensive.
53:31SPEAKER- Yes.
53:32SPEAKER- That kid was very popular for afterschool play dates.
53:37SPEAKERAnd then there was also always the kid that wouldn't share
53:41SPEAKERthat was just like, no, this is my save, I'm playing.
53:45SPEAKER- You can come over and watch me play.
53:46SPEAKER- You come over and watch me play
53:48SPEAKERand it's like the worst '80s kid movie villain of all time.
53:53SPEAKERBut yeah, it's like, I would love to see this happen
53:56SPEAKERfor like classic Midway games.
53:58SPEAKERI'd love this for, I feel like Ed Boon is aware
54:05SPEAKERof the history and the value of that and all those things.
54:09SPEAKER- Oh yes, we just passed our right around 30th anniversary
54:15SPEAKERof the first MK and he and John Tobias
54:17SPEAKERhave both been posting a bunch of old making of footage
54:21SPEAKERof them in the studio with the actors
54:22SPEAKERand logo treatments and there's been,
54:25SPEAKERtheir Twitter feeds are full
54:26SPEAKERof amazing archival stuff right now.
54:28SPEAKER- But so the thing that shocked me is how few people
54:32SPEAKERactually worked on the Atari 2600 thing full,
54:34SPEAKERlike it was like three people full time
54:37SPEAKERduring the time they were making it, right?
54:38SPEAKER- Like most of those games were made by like one person,
54:40SPEAKERright, or maybe two.
54:42SPEAKER- Yeah, and like the footage was collected obviously
54:46SPEAKERand edited and packaged up and that like the,
54:49SPEAKERthe brilliant thing about it is putting the whole thing
54:51SPEAKERon the timeline rather than just giving you
54:53SPEAKERa list of stuff to look at 'cause it tells the story,
54:56SPEAKERlike handholds you through the story in a way
54:58SPEAKERthat for somebody like me who kind of doesn't give a shit
55:00SPEAKERabout Atari stuff before this,
55:02SPEAKERit like made it really approachable.
55:04SPEAKER- Yeah, and I made the point on the next Lander podcast.
55:07SPEAKERIt guarantees, put it in the narrative format,
55:09SPEAKERguarantees that you see all of the extra material,
55:11SPEAKERall of the archival stuff because like they've been filling
55:15SPEAKERthese collections they've been doing
55:16SPEAKERwith amazing stuff like this,
55:17SPEAKERbut it was always just in a bonus menu somewhere
55:20SPEAKERand there were so much of it that it was kind of like hard
55:22SPEAKERto make your way through all of it.
55:24SPEAKERBut in this case, it's like, oh, I want to see the whole
55:26SPEAKERstory of Atari.
55:26SPEAKERI'm just going to go through this whole timeline and like,
55:28SPEAKERoh, now I've seen everything and that rules.
55:30SPEAKER- The thing I had forgotten was how,
55:33SPEAKERlike how many weird, how important the manual was
55:38SPEAKERto tell you which version of the mini game
55:40SPEAKERyou wanted to load.
55:42SPEAKER'Cause you know, when you play on the mister,
55:44SPEAKERit turns out that stuff is inscrutable
55:46SPEAKERand you don't have easy access to the manual, so.
55:49SPEAKER- Bring back consoles with a mode switch.
55:51SPEAKERThat's all I'm saying.
55:51SPEAKERAlso make them switches, make them the little springy,
55:54SPEAKERthe little spring loaded.
55:55SPEAKER(mumbles)
55:58SPEAKER- Wood paneling and physical switches.
56:02SPEAKER- Anyway, shout out to digital clips.
56:04SPEAKER'Cause that is, that game is dope.
56:05SPEAKERAnd please make, please, please get to make more of those.
56:08SPEAKER'Cause I will, I would play those for all of the old games.
56:11SPEAKER- Please do same.
56:12SPEAKERAlso shout out to.
56:15SPEAKER- Our patrons.
56:16SPEAKER- Yeah.
56:17SPEAKER- For going along with us on this weird ride.
56:21SPEAKER- We never even said it here anyway.
56:23SPEAKERHey, it's a cold open episode, but.
56:24SPEAKER- Look, I think they got it by the second or third.
56:26SPEAKERIf they didn't get it by the second or third one,
56:28SPEAKERthen I mean, I don't know.
56:30SPEAKER- They probably, they probably did.
56:32SPEAKERYou wrote down for one of your segment ideas
56:34SPEAKERfor this thing that we didn't get to.
56:35SPEAKERWe should stop doing cold open episodes.
56:37SPEAKERAnd I never did find out how tongue in cheek that is,
56:39SPEAKERbut I hope it's a lot.
56:40SPEAKER- Well, okay.
56:41SPEAKERSo my thought was, and this is probably a bad idea.
56:44SPEAKERMy thought was to do the actual, should we just do it?
56:47SPEAKERShould we do the cold open and then put it at the beginning?
56:49SPEAKER- Oh, I don't know.
56:50SPEAKER- I was gonna say do the cold open where we're like,
56:50SPEAKERwe shouldn't do any more.
56:52SPEAKERIs it time to do another cold open episode
56:54SPEAKERand be like, no, I don't think we should do any more,
56:56SPEAKERlike blah, blah, blah.
56:56SPEAKERAnd then we jumped into the cold open episode.
56:59SPEAKER- I see.
57:00SPEAKER- We should do that next time though.
57:01SPEAKER- Just a fake out?
57:02SPEAKER- Yeah, a big fake out.
57:03SPEAKER- Okay, so that's good.
57:04SPEAKERI wanted to make sure you were not serious about
57:06SPEAKERnever doing these again.
57:08SPEAKER- No, I love like, look, the cold open,
57:09SPEAKERthe problem is like, look,
57:12SPEAKERyou and I have talked about stuff for so long
57:14SPEAKERthat we can do five minutes on literally anything.
57:17SPEAKER- Sure, yes.
57:18SPEAKER- We should just, we actually,
57:19SPEAKERnext time we do a cold open episode,
57:20SPEAKERwe should have people submit ideas for the cold opens.
57:23SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.
57:24SPEAKER- And then see if we really can do five minutes on anything.
57:27SPEAKERI don't know, it may be a bad idea,
57:28SPEAKERbut it is time to thank our patrons
57:32SPEAKERwithout whom we wouldn't be here
57:33SPEAKERand wouldn't be doing the show.
57:34SPEAKERSo thank you, patrons, so much.
57:35SPEAKERWe really appreciate you.
57:37SPEAKER- Yes, we do.
57:38SPEAKER- And for as little as $2 a month,
57:40SPEAKERyou can go to patreon.com/techpod.
57:42SPEAKERThat is patreon.com/techpod,
57:45SPEAKERthe one and only URL for tech pod related Patreons.
57:49SPEAKER- Except no substitutes.
57:51SPEAKER- No, no substitutes.
57:52SPEAKERYou can get access to the Discord as well,
57:53SPEAKERwhich is a delightful resource.
57:54SPEAKERThis morning, we had a weird conversation this morning.
57:58SPEAKERWe were talking about like things that like upset you
58:04SPEAKERthat are irrational kind of,
58:05SPEAKERand are a result of childhood trauma or poverty or whatever.
58:09SPEAKER- Boy.
58:10SPEAKER- It was kind of, it was funny, but heavy,
58:12SPEAKERlike at the same time.
58:14SPEAKERLike I get, I realized a decade ago
58:16SPEAKERthat like one of my depression triggers
58:18SPEAKERis when I start running out of shampoo.
58:20SPEAKERSo I just always have extra bottles of shampoo around
58:22SPEAKERto avoid the problem.
58:23SPEAKER- Interesting, okay.
58:25SPEAKER- Look, I turned the shampoo into bubble bath
58:28SPEAKERone time when I was a kid and got in big trouble.
58:30SPEAKER'Cause it was turned out, it was all of our shampoo.
58:32SPEAKER- I see.
58:33SPEAKER- And it was a little bit of a rough time for the fan,
58:35SPEAKERbut everything ended up okay.
58:38SPEAKERBut yeah, so that's it, that's it.
58:39SPEAKERThat's the tech pod Patreon.
58:40SPEAKERYou can go to patreon.com/techpod.
58:42SPEAKERAnd for, like I said, two bucks a month,
58:43SPEAKERyou can get access to the Discord.
58:45SPEAKERFor five bucks a month,
58:46SPEAKERyou get access to the monthly Patreon episodes.
58:49SPEAKERThis last month, we talked a little bit
58:51SPEAKERabout the PC that I built, the PC world.
58:54SPEAKERWe talked about holiday lights.
58:55SPEAKERWe talked about a bunch of other stuff.
58:56SPEAKERIt's just kind of a rambling conversation
58:58SPEAKERabout stuff that's percolating in the background often.
59:03SPEAKERWe want to do an extra special shout out
59:05SPEAKERto our executive producer tier patrons,
59:08SPEAKERincluding Nick Johnston,
59:11SPEAKERPaddle Creek Games Makers of Fractured Veil,
59:13SPEAKERAndrew Slosky, Bunny Thorpe Couch Sleep Crimes.
59:18SPEAKERI don't even know what's happening there.
59:19SPEAKERI think bunny crimes must've fallen asleep on the couch.
59:23SPEAKER- How does one commit a sleep crime?
59:26SPEAKER- Look, if you need to ask, you don't want to know.
59:29SPEAKER- But Bunny Fiend was in our Twitch chat yesterday
59:31SPEAKERand mentioned that they have a toaster oven
59:33SPEAKERin their network rack.
59:35SPEAKER- Wow, that's a bold choice.
59:37SPEAKER- You know, I didn't follow up on the purpose there,
59:40SPEAKERbut I admire it.
59:42SPEAKER- Are they soldering or is it-
59:44SPEAKER- That was one of the first assumptions, but I, you know.
59:47SPEAKER- Wow, I wouldn't want to put anything hot in there.
59:50SPEAKER- Maybe they're just reheating pizza
59:52SPEAKERwhile they're working on their server, I don't know.
59:56SPEAKER- Anyway, Bunny Thorpe Couch Sleep Crimes, Just Wedge,
59:58SPEAKERJoel Krauska, Twinkle Twinkie, and James Kamik.
1:00:00SPEAKERThank you all so, so much.
1:00:01SPEAKERWe really appreciate your support every month
1:00:04SPEAKERand appreciate everybody who supports the show
1:00:06SPEAKER'cause like we said, 100% listener supported
1:00:12SPEAKERwithout you all, this show wouldn't happen.
1:00:13SPEAKER- 100%. - 100%.
1:00:15SPEAKERAnd on that note, we'll be back next week
1:00:17SPEAKERwith another episode of the TechPod
1:00:21SPEAKERwhere I think we're gonna talk about migrations and tools
1:00:25SPEAKERand stuff like that as the plan, right?
1:00:27SPEAKER- Yes, digital organization stuff.
1:00:30SPEAKER- We've done an organization episode before,
1:00:31SPEAKERbut I'm starting from scratch here.
1:00:33SPEAKERSo there's an opportunity to undo all my past crimes.
1:00:36SPEAKERSo I need some of that Brad Shoemaker organization
1:00:41SPEAKERin my life.
1:00:42SPEAKER- You know I've got it.
1:00:43SPEAKER- Oh, I know.
1:00:44SPEAKERSee you all next week.
1:00:45SPEAKERThanks for listening, everybody.
1:00:46SPEAKER(upbeat music)
