159: It's Good Brain

2022-11-20 · 1:03:14

00:00SPEAKER- Right, it went viral again.

00:01SPEAKER- Again?

00:02SPEAKER- Yeah, it's more stupid Will Smith shit.

00:04SPEAKER- Oh, imagine that, what happened?

00:08SPEAKER- Punished Kate on Twitter posted,

00:10SPEAKER"What's the funniest thing

00:12SPEAKER"that someone's ever gotten mad at you for on here?"

00:14SPEAKERI think mine is when somebody told me

00:15SPEAKERI was rich and privileged for saying back,

00:17SPEAKER"Service condo corridors at malls are scary at night,"

00:20SPEAKERwhile I was in the service corridor because I worked there.

00:22SPEAKERI said, "Slapping Chris Rock."

00:24SPEAKER- Yes.

00:25SPEAKER- And then I went to bed and like 15 people had liked it

00:27SPEAKERand it was like friends and I was like,

00:28SPEAKER"Aha, here's a funny joke for people I follow

00:30SPEAKER"and now 300,000 people have liked it."

00:32SPEAKER- What?

00:33SPEAKER- Yeah.

00:34SPEAKER- Okay, I saw that very early,

00:37SPEAKERlike when you were probably in the double digits,

00:38SPEAKERlike you said, I too figured that would be that.

00:42SPEAKERMan.

00:43SPEAKER- Once again, Brad, you're a thought leader.

00:44SPEAKER- You know the hits play over and over it turns out.

00:48SPEAKER- Yep, yep, it's just like the nice thing about this time

00:52SPEAKERversus the last time though is that now

00:53SPEAKERthere's a third category of people who are pissed off at me.

00:56SPEAKER'Cause like the traditional two are people

00:58SPEAKERwho are mad that I hit Chris Rock

01:00SPEAKERor people who are mad that I didn't.

01:04SPEAKER- To be fair, you shouldn't have hit Chris Rock.

01:05SPEAKERI mean, I think we can all agree

01:07SPEAKERthat you should not have done that.

01:08SPEAKER- Yeah, look, I mean, I think you and I

01:10SPEAKERboth are completely aligned on the idea

01:12SPEAKERthat words are violence with a few notable exceptions

01:17SPEAKERrarely is the answer.

01:19SPEAKERBut yeah, the two groups of people before,

01:21SPEAKERpeople who were like rah, rah, good job defending your wife

01:24SPEAKERand oh hell no, don't ever hit people.

01:27SPEAKERAnd then now there's the third category of people

01:30SPEAKERwho are pissed that I bought a blue check mark

01:33SPEAKERon Twitter for the joke.

01:36SPEAKERAnd then there's the fourth and fifth categories,

01:39SPEAKERwhich are people who are like,

01:41SPEAKERno, he's not that Will Smith.

01:43SPEAKERAnd then also like, no, he didn't buy the blue check mark.

01:46SPEAKERAnd it's just cats and dogs living, mistakes remain.

01:50SPEAKER- Have they not figured out that you can just click through

01:52SPEAKERand see if somebody bought the check mark or not?

01:54SPEAKER- No, the kind of people who are yelling at people

01:56SPEAKERon random strangers on the internet

01:58SPEAKERabout things they're upset about

01:59SPEAKERdon't generally click through to profiles

02:00SPEAKERI've found over the years.

02:01SPEAKER- That stands to reason.

02:03SPEAKER- Yeah.

02:04SPEAKER- Do you find, I don't know if this is just confirmation

02:06SPEAKERbias, but do you find your Twitter experiences degrading

02:08SPEAKERpretty quickly?

02:09SPEAKER- Yes.

02:10SPEAKER- Like I'm finding like weird stuff,

02:12SPEAKERlike seeing a tweet with like 50 replies on it

02:15SPEAKERand I click through to it and it won't render more

02:17SPEAKERthan like two and it's not even a show more tweets

02:19SPEAKERor show more replies or like, there's just nothing there.

02:22SPEAKER- The thing I'm getting is that I'll get batches

02:25SPEAKERof like the notifications come in in real batchy ways now

02:29SPEAKERinstead of like, it used to be that like,

02:31SPEAKERwhen you had something that people were liking,

02:33SPEAKERit would kind of constantly tick up

02:34SPEAKERand you'd be able to see it.

02:35SPEAKERAnd now it's just nonstop like big batches of 100, 200 likes

02:41SPEAKERwhatever coming in at a time.

02:42SPEAKER- Yeah.

02:44SPEAKER- The quality thing I've noticed,

02:45SPEAKERso I've been spending time on Mastodon lately.

02:47SPEAKERAnd the thing that I've noticed is the quality

02:50SPEAKERof conversation in terms of signal to noise,

02:53SPEAKERjust with weird bot stuff and people who are spammy there

02:57SPEAKERversus Twitter, it's an enormous difference.

03:00SPEAKERIt feels very much like old school Twitter,

03:02SPEAKERbut it's not all white people from tech

03:04SPEAKERthat I followed on Twitter in 2009.

03:06SPEAKER- You mean to tell me a platform

03:08SPEAKERthat does not have a significant fraction

03:09SPEAKERof the world's population using it is a cleaner experience?

03:13SPEAKER(upbeat music)

03:23SPEAKER(upbeat music continues)

03:42SPEAKER- Welcome to "Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod."

03:45SPEAKERI'm Will.

03:46SPEAKER- I'm Brad.

03:47SPEAKER- Hello.

03:48SPEAKER- Hi, hello to you, Will Smith.

03:51SPEAKER- You know, Brad-- - Not that Will Smith.

03:53SPEAKER- It's the time of year.

03:56SPEAKERIt's the time of year where we in the United States

03:59SPEAKERare thankful for things.

04:00SPEAKER- That's right.

04:01SPEAKERIt's not quite the most wonderful time of the year yet,

04:03SPEAKERbut getting there.

04:04SPEAKER- No, we're not quite back to a normal Thanksgiving here.

04:07SPEAKER'Cause we usually, we were thinking we might do

04:09SPEAKERan outside backyard Thanksgiving,

04:10SPEAKERand now it looks like it's gonna rain all week,

04:12SPEAKERso our backyard would be a mud hole.

04:14SPEAKER- Oh man, outdoor turkey.

04:15SPEAKER- Yeah, remember the year we did the outdoor Thanksgiving?

04:18SPEAKER- Oh my, yes. - You were here for that.

04:19SPEAKER- Yes, we did, yes.

04:21SPEAKER- We had like three tables of people

04:22SPEAKERand a giant backyard soiree.

04:26SPEAKER- Yeah, not to make everything about Twitter,

04:28SPEAKERbut the image of me and my Twitter banner

04:30SPEAKERis from that backyard table.

04:32SPEAKER- Oh really? - Yes.

04:33SPEAKER- Oh nice.

04:34SPEAKER- That was a great time.

04:35SPEAKER- Did you go ham on a leg that year?

04:37SPEAKERI can't remember.

04:40SPEAKER- Generally when a leg is offered, ham is undertaken.

04:45SPEAKER- Brad, I think the banner, your Twitter banner image

04:47SPEAKERhas changed since you last remembered.

04:50SPEAKER- Wait, what are you talking about?

04:51SPEAKERWait, are they messing with people's banners now?

04:54SPEAKER- No, I don't think so.

04:54SPEAKERThis one looks like one you chose,

04:56SPEAKERbut it's not, it's definitely not you in my backyard

04:59SPEAKERas far as I don't know. - Oh, the head.

05:01SPEAKERThe head. - Oh, the head.

05:02SPEAKER- The head absolutely is.

05:04SPEAKER- Oh, okay, very good, very good.

05:05SPEAKER- You see the photoshopping?

05:07SPEAKER- Yes, I thought this was a real life capture of you

05:10SPEAKERand a demon from some sort of hellish stew.

05:13SPEAKER- That's not just a demon.

05:14SPEAKERThat's not just any demon, that's a life stealer.

05:16SPEAKER- I don't know what life stealer is.

05:17SPEAKER- Oh, you should, let me introduce you to Dota 2.

05:21SPEAKER- Oh, no, I'm good, thank you.

05:23SPEAKER- You should be thankful- - I say no to drugs, Brad.

05:26SPEAKER- You should be thankful that you don't play Dota 2.

05:28SPEAKER- Look, I've had to have the conversation

05:30SPEAKERwith my daughter lately where I'm like,

05:31SPEAKERhey, you know how when you play Fortnite

05:33SPEAKERand at the end of the, whether you win or lose,

05:35SPEAKERyou've had a fun time and you feel happy

05:37SPEAKERand you know how you play Roblox

05:38SPEAKERand when you finish a game, you're just kind of sad?

05:40SPEAKER- Yes.

05:42SPEAKER- Those are the examples of good feeling games

05:44SPEAKERand bad feeling games and you should,

05:46SPEAKERyou'll feel better and have a happier time

05:48SPEAKERif you just play games that make you feel good at the end

05:50SPEAKERinstead of the ones that make you feel angry

05:52SPEAKERwhether you win or lose.

05:53SPEAKER- You know, that's good advice for life.

05:55SPEAKERMaybe do things that make you happy

05:56SPEAKERand don't do things that don't.

05:57SPEAKER- Yeah, so, you know, hence more Mastodon time,

06:00SPEAKERless Twitter time.

06:00SPEAKERAnyway, this week, because we are

06:03SPEAKERin a retrospective thankful season,

06:05SPEAKERwe're gonna come back and do something we haven't done.

06:07SPEAKERWe used to do this at Tested a lot every year, I think,

06:09SPEAKERand we haven't done it, we did it here once

06:12SPEAKERand we haven't done it since, but I think we both like it

06:14SPEAKERand I think we're going to,

06:18SPEAKERwe just want to talk about things we're thankful for.

06:21SPEAKER- Things for which we are thankful.

06:22SPEAKER- Tech, what we are thankful for.

06:24SPEAKER- Tech edition, yes.

06:25SPEAKER- Yes, and like some of this is,

06:28SPEAKERsome of this is going to be familiar to longtime listeners.

06:32SPEAKERIf you're new, you might have some new things here

06:33SPEAKERthat you've not heard that we do love

06:35SPEAKERand don't talk about as much as we used to anymore.

06:39SPEAKERBut yeah, you want to kick off, Brad,

06:40SPEAKERor you want me to go first?

06:41SPEAKER- I could start talking about this Apple watch briefly.

06:44SPEAKER- Ooh.

06:45SPEAKER- Which I'd actually, this is all theoretical

06:47SPEAKERfor the most part, because I have not really lived

06:49SPEAKERmy normal life with this watch yet,

06:51SPEAKERdespite having had it for well over a month now.

06:56SPEAKERSo I got the Apple watch like days,

06:59SPEAKERlike three days before I flew back to the East Coast.

07:02SPEAKER- Oh, I didn't realize you got an East Coast Apple watch.

07:06SPEAKER- Yes, indeed.

07:07SPEAKERAnd I enjoyed it there quite a bit.

07:09SPEAKERAnd then I flew back out here

07:11SPEAKERand then proceeded to immediately get sick for a month.

07:13SPEAKER- So yeah, that'll happen.

07:15SPEAKER- So I haven't really gotten to use it

07:17SPEAKERin my kind of day-to-day routine

07:18SPEAKERin the way that I'm most excited about using it,

07:20SPEAKERwhich is for the health stuff.

07:22SPEAKERLike that's kind of not the thing.

07:24SPEAKERWell, there's some other stuff there too,

07:25SPEAKERbut like I was going on a lot of walks and stuff

07:28SPEAKERwhen I was back home with this thing.

07:30SPEAKERAnd I was kind of shocked

07:31SPEAKERhow motivating all the ring stuff is.

07:34SPEAKER- The ring stuff is, it's kind of icky

07:36SPEAKERhow excited it makes me about getting up off my ass.

07:38SPEAKER- So for me, I mean, I guess excited

07:42SPEAKERis a word I could use there,

07:44SPEAKERbut the thing I wanted to say though,

07:46SPEAKERis it's not that it gamifies exercise and health for me.

07:49SPEAKERI'm not like chasing high scores.

07:51SPEAKERIt's the rings are almost more of like a scold.

07:54SPEAKERLike when I see- - But it's gentle.

07:56SPEAKER- Sure, yeah, well, I mean, the watch is not rude.

07:59SPEAKERIt's very positive reinforcement.

08:01SPEAKERLike you can still do it.

08:02SPEAKERIf you get up and move around, you can still close this ring.

08:04SPEAKER- If you go on a brisk 37 minute walk,

08:06SPEAKERyou can close your exercise ring today.

08:09SPEAKER- Maybe scolding is a harsh term,

08:11SPEAKERbut like there is a bit of soft admonishment from it.

08:15SPEAKER- It's like a nudge.

08:16SPEAKER- Kind of, yeah, it's less like,

08:18SPEAKERoh, I need to rack up a new high score today.

08:21SPEAKERIt's more, man, I really haven't gotten up

08:23SPEAKERand done much today.

08:24SPEAKERHave I actually go for a walk?

08:25SPEAKERLike it's just, it's more of a reminder than anything.

08:27SPEAKERIt's really just a way to gauge the fact

08:30SPEAKERthat you have not gotten enough activity.

08:31SPEAKERAnd especially when you work from home, that's critical.

08:33SPEAKER- I wish that it did.

08:35SPEAKERSo I got mine,

08:36SPEAKERwell, actually after I was in the hospital last year,

08:38SPEAKER'cause like not being, having the watch unlock your phone

08:41SPEAKERwithout having, when, well, at the time,

08:44SPEAKERthe phones wouldn't unlock with masks on the face phones.

08:47SPEAKERSo having to type in my passcode 300 times a day

08:49SPEAKERwhen I was in the hospital was a pain in the ass.

08:51SPEAKER- Wait, on the phone or the watch?

08:52SPEAKER- On the phone.

08:53SPEAKER- Okay.

08:54SPEAKER- So now the face ID unlocks the phone

08:57SPEAKERwith masks on pretty reliably.

08:59SPEAKER- Okay, the reason I asked was there's no,

09:03SPEAKERthere's no synchronization

09:04SPEAKERbetween unlocking phone and watch, right?

09:06SPEAKER- No, no, you can turn that on.

09:07SPEAKERIt's an option, it's in watch options on your phone, I think.

09:10SPEAKER- My watch is still set that I have to type in the passcode

09:12SPEAKERevery time I put it on.

09:14SPEAKER- Yeah, no, if you have the, if you set it,

09:16SPEAKERif you flip the switch, it'll,

09:18SPEAKERwhen you unlock the watch while the phone is unlocked

09:21SPEAKERand nearby, it'll unlock.

09:22SPEAKER- Interesting, okay.

09:23SPEAKER- Yeah, and you get a little notification on the watch

09:24SPEAKERor vice versa, it goes either way.

09:27SPEAKER- Actually having to go find my phone to unlock the watch

09:29SPEAKERsounds worse now that I think about it.

09:30SPEAKER- Well, you can still use the passcode on the phone,

09:32SPEAKERon the watch.

09:33SPEAKER- I might just stick with the passcode.

09:35SPEAKERAnyway, the point is, but you shouldn't have to do the,

09:38SPEAKERthe passcode should stay locked, unlocked

09:41SPEAKERwhile the phone's on your wrist, the watch is on your wrist.

09:43SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm just talking about it.

09:44SPEAKERBut I've found that I take it off three or four times a day.

09:48SPEAKER- Oh, okay.

09:50SPEAKERBut yeah, the convenience of having the notifications there

09:54SPEAKERso I didn't have to have the phone out all the time

09:56SPEAKERis really nice.

09:57SPEAKERLike, I understand why it's popular amongst teachers

10:00SPEAKERand nurses and food professionals and things like that

10:03SPEAKERso they can remain a little bit connected

10:05SPEAKEReven when they're not able to handle

10:07SPEAKERtheir most favoritest device.

10:09SPEAKER- Yes, or even for me, I just am bad about keeping up

10:12SPEAKERwith my phone around the house.

10:13SPEAKERLike, I absentmindedly leave it on silent a lot

10:15SPEAKERand I'm not often in the same room as it.

10:18SPEAKER- You know about the ding, ding, ding button, right?

10:20SPEAKER- The ding, ding, ding button?

10:22SPEAKER- The thing on your watch?

10:23SPEAKEROkay, so if you swipe up to the control center,

10:24SPEAKERthe top left, the button of the phone

10:27SPEAKERwith the little sound waves next to it,

10:29SPEAKERif you hit that, it makes your phone make a loud noise.

10:31SPEAKER- Oh, yeah, yeah, yes.

10:31SPEAKER- And that's like, that's the real secret feature

10:35SPEAKERon the watch.

10:36SPEAKER- I had to use that the other day, like three days ago.

10:39SPEAKERYeah, I'm missing a lot fewer notifications than I was.

10:43SPEAKERI kinda, it's just sort of made me a believer

10:46SPEAKERin wearable tech.

10:47SPEAKERMaybe not like, you know, I'm not saying

10:49SPEAKERwe should bring Google Glass back or something like that,

10:51SPEAKERbut having a device that's hooked into this ecosystem

10:55SPEAKERon your wrist at all times,

10:56SPEAKERlike all the lights around here are automated

10:59SPEAKERand as nice as that is for actually scheduling lights

11:01SPEAKERon and off, it kinda makes manually

11:03SPEAKERturning them on and off worse.

11:05SPEAKER- Yeah.

11:06SPEAKER- 'Cause you have to go find a phone or a tablet

11:07SPEAKERevery time you wanna turn the damn lights on

11:09SPEAKERand that's not so-

11:10SPEAKER- Or you can just ask Alexa or Google Home

11:11SPEAKERor something like that.

11:12SPEAKER- Maybe you can, if you're comfortable

11:13SPEAKERwith robots monitoring your every word.

11:16SPEAKER- Eh, let them know I'm on their side

11:18SPEAKERso that they know I'm a patsy when the end times come.

11:21SPEAKER- Fair, yeah, like having the thing on my wrist

11:24SPEAKERall the time, it's like, holy shit,

11:25SPEAKERI can just turn all these lights on and off.

11:28SPEAKER- Do you have it hooked up with Apple Home?

11:30SPEAKER- Yes.

11:31SPEAKER- Yeah, all that stuff.

11:32SPEAKERWell, a home assistant actually runs everything

11:33SPEAKERunder the hood, but it's all exposed in home

11:35SPEAKERso I can turn everything on and off with the watch

11:37SPEAKERand I've got mood lighting in the living room

11:39SPEAKERthat I turn on and off in the evening.

11:41SPEAKERWe've got a sound machine in the bedroom that's on that

11:44SPEAKERand just being able to do that at all times

11:46SPEAKERwith the thing on my wrist.

11:49SPEAKER- It's super nice.

11:50SPEAKER- The open source music server that I run

11:54SPEAKERexposes itself over the network as just an AirPlay,

11:57SPEAKERas an iTunes home share and AirPlay setup,

12:00SPEAKERso any Apple device can hook into that.

12:02SPEAKERDo you know the remote app?

12:04SPEAKER- Yeah.

12:04SPEAKER- iOS remote for controlling a remote.

12:06SPEAKER- Of course, I use it every day, it's constant.

12:08SPEAKER- iTunes library.

12:10SPEAKERYeah, so that lives on the phone,

12:12SPEAKERso I can just play music in any room of the house

12:15SPEAKERfrom my wrist now, it's kind of amazing.

12:18SPEAKER- The neat thing on that front,

12:20SPEAKERthe fact that you can use it as a remote for Apple TVs

12:23SPEAKERis really cool.

12:23SPEAKER- Yeah.

12:24SPEAKER- The only thing I can't do is I can't figure out

12:26SPEAKERhow to do the long press on the menu to make it hang up,

12:28SPEAKERto make it turn off the, open the big menu

12:31SPEAKERso you can put the Apple TV to sleep.

12:36SPEAKERBut yeah, it's funny 'cause rolling the crown

12:40SPEAKERadjusts the volume when you're watching TV.

12:44SPEAKERAnd the neat thing is if you're like,

12:46SPEAKERif I'm in the living room watching TV,

12:47SPEAKERit just puts the remote up without,

12:49SPEAKER'cause it knows that I'm near that TV.

12:51SPEAKERSo it's smart in a way that is actually smart

12:55SPEAKERinstead of annoying.

12:56SPEAKERAnyway, I'm with you.

12:58SPEAKER- Who would've thought having a thing on your wrist

13:00SPEAKERall the time that replicates most of the functionality

13:03SPEAKERof your phone is pretty handy.

13:05SPEAKER- And it's also worth, it's worth mentioning that like,

13:09SPEAKERwhen it first came out 10 years ago almost now,

13:12SPEAKERit was kind of crap.

13:13SPEAKER- Yes.

13:14SPEAKER- Like it wasn't, it was just notifications

13:16SPEAKERand sometimes Siri if you were lucky

13:18SPEAKERand it would take your heartbeat, so.

13:20SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm very glad I waited as long as I did

13:22SPEAKER'cause it finally has matured to a place

13:25SPEAKERwhere it feels very, very worth having.

13:27SPEAKER- Positive reinforcement for bad behavior, Brad.

13:30SPEAKER- How was it, you just said it was crap.

13:34SPEAKER- But like sometimes you gotta pave the way

13:35SPEAKERfor the people who come after you.

13:37SPEAKER- Hey man, I'm happy to let you, yeah.

13:41SPEAKER- So I, one of the projects that's happened this year

13:43SPEAKERis when we switched to MagSafe phones last year,

13:47SPEAKERI bought like $15 Anker MagSafe chargers

13:51SPEAKERfor our nightstands.

13:53SPEAKERAnd as a result we had a couple of charge pads around

13:57SPEAKERthat I've put in places that like,

14:00SPEAKERthat, you know, Gene and I often find ourselves.

14:02SPEAKERSo like by the couch and in the kitchen

14:04SPEAKERand there's one on my desk too.

14:07SPEAKERAnd having wireless charging ubiquitous is so nice

14:13SPEAKER'cause like if my AirPods need charging,

14:15SPEAKERI just drop the case on there.

14:17SPEAKERIf the phone needs, like if I'm in the kitchen

14:19SPEAKERworking on food and I have Paprika open,

14:21SPEAKERwhich keeps the screen on all the time,

14:23SPEAKERthen I just put it on the pad and I don't worry about it.

14:26SPEAKERAnd I can, it's set up on the edge so I can,

14:29SPEAKERso it's tilted up and it works really, really well.

14:31SPEAKERIt's a really real delight.

14:33SPEAKER- Yeah, that's smart.

14:33SPEAKERI mean, you're gonna put your phone down

14:35SPEAKERaround the house anyway.

14:35SPEAKERYou might as well have charge in the places

14:38SPEAKERyou put it down.

14:39SPEAKER- Yeah, it kind of makes me think,

14:41SPEAKERI remember when Starbucks was like,

14:42SPEAKERhey, we're putting charging mats

14:43SPEAKERin all of the tabletops at Starbucks and no phones.

14:47SPEAKERWell, I mean, I guess no iPhones had wireless charging

14:49SPEAKERat that point and like two Android phones

14:51SPEAKERhad three different standards.

14:54SPEAKERIt's like, this is stupid, but I was wrong.

14:55SPEAKEROkay, I was wrong.

14:58SPEAKERI was wrong.

15:00SPEAKER- Yeah, I went through some stuff when we,

15:02SPEAKERmy partner also got a new Apple Watch at the same time

15:04SPEAKERand she had a very old like series,

15:06SPEAKERGod, it might've been series zero, like the first gen.

15:09SPEAKERAnyway, she had some old like knockoff,

15:12SPEAKERthird-party Apple Watch charging cable.

15:15SPEAKERAnd we tried using that with the new watch

15:17SPEAKERand the new watch got extremely hot.

15:19SPEAKER- Oh, that's bad then, don't do that.

15:21SPEAKER- So like that spooked me from buying

15:22SPEAKERany kind of third-party watch chargers,

15:25SPEAKERcharging cable, I should say.

15:27SPEAKER- Yeah, well, my experience has been

15:30SPEAKERthat you need to charge the watch so infrequently.

15:32SPEAKERLike if you have your notifications under control,

15:35SPEAKERso it's only the actual important notifications,

15:37SPEAKERlike I have like less than 50 notifications

15:39SPEAKERpop on my watch a day, probably.

15:42SPEAKERI have, like I charge it every other day, basically.

15:45SPEAKERIt's like every 40, 36 hours-ish.

15:49SPEAKER- That's not bad.

15:50SPEAKER- The smaller watches don't have,

15:51SPEAKERthe battery life's not quite as good,

15:54SPEAKERjust 'cause there's less battery,

15:56SPEAKERless space for battery in them.

15:57SPEAKERBut the big one seems to be like a day and a half day,

16:01SPEAKERat least a full day for me.

16:03SPEAKERAnd it takes like 30 minutes to charge.

16:04SPEAKERIt doesn't take long.

16:05SPEAKER- Yeah, and the, they're actually calling

16:07SPEAKERthe new iPhones MagSafe, right?

16:08SPEAKERLike they've adapted that term from the laptop

16:11SPEAKERto anything with like a magnetic snap-on charge.

16:14SPEAKER- It's not any, no, it's only, it's a specific thing.

16:16SPEAKERIt's like a inch and a half, well, it's an Apple standard.

16:20SPEAKER- Well, that's what I mean, but it's-

16:21SPEAKER- It's like an inch and a half, two inch circle,

16:23SPEAKERand it snaps on and holds,

16:25SPEAKERand it's like strong enough to hold the phone.

16:27SPEAKERLike you can dangle it by the cable when it's magged on.

16:29SPEAKER- Right, so yeah, that was the thing

16:32SPEAKERabout this old crappy cable was like it did not snuggly.

16:36SPEAKERLike you could barely kind of bump the watch

16:38SPEAKERand it would just come off of the magnet.

16:40SPEAKER- Well, so the watch thing uses a different deal.

16:42SPEAKERIt's not actually the MagSafe.

16:44SPEAKER- Okay.

16:45SPEAKER- 'Cause it's a different size.

16:45SPEAKERThe MagSafe is way bigger.

16:47SPEAKER- The newer Apple chargers are very strong magnets though.

16:50SPEAKER- The MagSafe is that size.

16:53SPEAKER- Okay, yeah.

16:54SPEAKERAnyway, it's kind of put me off of like buying

16:58SPEAKERa cheapo no-name wireless charging thing from Amazon,

17:01SPEAKERbut like the Apple cables are 30 bucks a piece

17:04SPEAKERand that's not great either.

17:05SPEAKER- Well, yeah, so the MagSafe cables,

17:07SPEAKERI feel like the Anker thing, the MagSafe,

17:09SPEAKERI believe that Apple does do a certification

17:11SPEAKERfor the MagSafe accessories.

17:14SPEAKERI don't think that anybody else is authorized

17:17SPEAKERto sell Apple watch chargers.

17:18SPEAKER- Interesting.

17:19SPEAKER- Yeah.

17:20SPEAKER- That explains a lot.

17:21SPEAKER- Yeah.

17:22SPEAKERWhat else you got?

17:24SPEAKER- Let's see here.

17:26SPEAKERThis is a vague one.

17:28SPEAKERI wrote down means of communication that aren't Twitter.

17:30SPEAKER- Weird, what a weird coincidence.

17:32SPEAKERWhy would that be a front of mind this week, Brad?

17:35SPEAKER- You know, the need to talk to people in places

17:38SPEAKERother than that is becoming increasingly urgent, let's say.

17:42SPEAKER- We're talking co-host, we're talking Peach.

17:47SPEAKERYou got your path going.

17:49SPEAKER- I don't know yet which one I'm going to say

17:52SPEAKERis the crucial one.

17:53SPEAKERI guess Discord.

17:55SPEAKER- Discord is like a top two for me, for sure.

17:59SPEAKER- I mean, Discord is such a different use case though.

18:01SPEAKERIt's extremely opt-in and like closed

18:04SPEAKERand kind of insular, right?

18:05SPEAKERLike you're curating yourself into very

18:09SPEAKERinto closed communities as opposed to something

18:11SPEAKERthat like, I don't love all the rhetoric

18:14SPEAKERabout like digital town square with regard to Twitter,

18:16SPEAKERbut like it is very much an open,

18:18SPEAKERlike you can kind of see any lunatic shouting anything

18:22SPEAKERon there.

18:23SPEAKER- And it's also, it also was kind of the de facto

18:27SPEAKERsocial network for people in our line of work.

18:30SPEAKER- Yes.

18:30SPEAKER- Right, so journalists and game people and tech people

18:33SPEAKERall congregated there for whatever reason.

18:37SPEAKERAnd we're like, I think that's the thing

18:40SPEAKERthat I'm bummed out about, about the Twitter.

18:42SPEAKERLike the fact that my special effects people

18:46SPEAKERwho mostly were on Instagram,

18:47SPEAKERbut also cross posted to Twitter

18:48SPEAKERare just going to go full Instagram now.

18:50SPEAKERAnd like the game people are going to Mastodon

18:54SPEAKERand co-host it looks like and Discord, of course.

18:58SPEAKERAnd the tech people and the science people

19:00SPEAKERare all going completely different directions.

19:01SPEAKERSo it's like being able to get all of that stuff

19:05SPEAKERin one place was really convenient and nice.

19:07SPEAKERAnd then that's gonna probably go away it looks like.

19:10SPEAKER- Yeah, it was interesting to see the night

19:11SPEAKERthe story came down that everybody had quit.

19:14SPEAKER- Yeah.

19:15SPEAKER- Like I and everybody else immediately went

19:16SPEAKERinto panic mode of tweeting like,

19:18SPEAKERhere's where I might post in the future.

19:19SPEAKERAnd it was interesting to see person by person

19:22SPEAKERwho had chosen what platforms.

19:23SPEAKERLike some people very much were just,

19:25SPEAKERhey, I'm on Instagram now.

19:27SPEAKER- And welcome to my TikTok.

19:29SPEAKER- Right, yes, so a definite fragmentation

19:32SPEAKERis probably going to occur, but anyway,

19:37SPEAKERhopefully something better will arise.

19:39SPEAKER- Yeah.

19:40SPEAKER- 'Cause it doesn't look like it's gonna be that.

19:42SPEAKER- And I mean, here's the thing.

19:43SPEAKERUltimately, if I get down to it,

19:45SPEAKERthe communication on the smaller scale in Discord

19:49SPEAKERand like feels, I hesitate to say this 'cause it's fraught,

19:54SPEAKERbut like the Discord situation feels less

19:56SPEAKERlike parasocial internet relationships

19:58SPEAKERand more like actual like early '90s message boards

20:02SPEAKERand things like that where like,

20:04SPEAKERI actually did go do hangouts

20:06SPEAKERwith people that I knew from message boards.

20:07SPEAKERLike I met people from Shaq News in real life

20:09SPEAKERat like PAXs and Comic-Con and QuakeCon and stuff like that.

20:16SPEAKER- Totally, I mean, I've said many times,

20:18SPEAKERlike meeting up with people I knew only from IRC

20:21SPEAKERat E3 is how I got into games.

20:23SPEAKER- Yeah.

20:23SPEAKER- Yeah, like stuff like Discord

20:25SPEAKERis definitely kind of replicating that.

20:27SPEAKER- Yeah.

20:28SPEAKER- And shout out to the TechPod Discord also, hello.

20:30SPEAKER- Yes, yes.

20:31SPEAKER- You can become a patron at thepatreon.com/techpod,

20:35SPEAKERhashtag shill.

20:38SPEAKERCan we talk about my Steam Deck?

20:39SPEAKER- Sure.

20:41SPEAKER- Brad, I love my Steam Deck, man.

20:42SPEAKER- How's the Steam Deck treating you?

20:43SPEAKER- It's fantastic.

20:46SPEAKER- What usage patterns have you settled into on it?

20:49SPEAKER- So on nights that I don't stream,

20:51SPEAKERI often will sit in the couch and play,

20:54SPEAKERwell, like there's, okay,

20:56SPEAKERso there's a couple of TV shows that I actually watch,

20:58SPEAKERbut there's a lot of TV that's kind of on in the house.

21:00SPEAKERLike often Gina and I will watch, like I like,

21:04SPEAKERokay, here's a confession, Thanksgiving Confessions here.

21:07SPEAKERI love CBS reality shows because of the puzzle design,

21:13SPEAKERlike the Big Brother and Survivor and Amazing Race puzzle

21:17SPEAKERand challenge design is so good.

21:20SPEAKERIt's so fun to watch and it's so fun to try to figure out

21:22SPEAKERwhat they were trying, like what variables they had

21:25SPEAKERin the design of this challenge so that they could juice it

21:27SPEAKERto be toward the person they want to be able to win,

21:30SPEAKERstuff like that, it's so, so, so good.

21:33SPEAKERI hate all the other, like all the talking

21:36SPEAKERand all the strategy and all the game bullshit

21:38SPEAKERis just exhausting.

21:39SPEAKER- Sure, I see where this is going.

21:41SPEAKER- Yeah, so I'll sit there with like, you know,

21:44SPEAKERpreviously would have been a phone game,

21:45SPEAKERbut now I can play like Spider-Man or something if I want,

21:48SPEAKERor I can stream something from the gaming PC

21:51SPEAKERin the other room across my Wi-Fi, my good Wi-Fi,

21:56SPEAKERand I get the full, I get a full video game,

21:59SPEAKERas video game experience with like DX 12 and, you know,

22:03SPEAKERray tracing and all that stuff,

22:05SPEAKERbut on a handheld in my living room.

22:06SPEAKER- Now, what is the courtesy practice

22:08SPEAKERwhen you are playing a handheld on the couch next to someone

22:11SPEAKERwho might be actually watching the entire show

22:13SPEAKERin terms of, are you headphoning it?

22:15SPEAKER- So sometimes it's a little bit of like

22:16SPEAKERone of your headphones, like I'll put one AirPod in

22:19SPEAKERand just kind of, you know, mono it.

22:23SPEAKERSometimes it's playing stuff

22:24SPEAKERthat I don't really need a lot of sound for,

22:25SPEAKERso I'll just have it up loud enough

22:26SPEAKERthat I can hear like the bleeps and the bloops,

22:28SPEAKERbut not maybe background music and stuff like that.

22:30SPEAKERI don't play a lot of story,

22:32SPEAKERlike I play a lot of roguelikes and stuff like that there.

22:34SPEAKERLike I'll play a Spelunky or I'll play a Dead Cells

22:36SPEAKERor I'll play a Hades,

22:39SPEAKERand those are light audio games for me a lot of the times.

22:42SPEAKER- Doing any emulation on there?

22:44SPEAKER- I have been, I've been playing,

22:46SPEAKERone of the things I have been actually playing

22:48SPEAKERis Twilight Princess, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess,

22:51SPEAKERwhich I bounced off of in the first like hour

22:55SPEAKERback in the day.

22:56SPEAKERIt works really well.

22:58SPEAKERI've done some SNES stuff, which is lovely.

23:01SPEAKERIt emulates super well,

23:04SPEAKERand maybe have run some like later stage dolphin stuff even,

23:09SPEAKERlike Wind Waker and stuff like that.

23:11SPEAKER- You're doing the GameCube version of Twilight Princess?

23:14SPEAKER- I am doing, I'm doing the GameCube version, yeah,

23:16SPEAKER'cause the Wii version had weird controls.

23:18SPEAKER- Oh, right, yes, I assume.

23:20SPEAKERI'm sure that stuff could be mapped to button inputs,

23:22SPEAKERbut I'm sure it's cleaner to just do the GameCube.

23:24SPEAKER- It's cleaner to do the GameCube version,

23:26SPEAKER'cause like the dolphin on there

23:28SPEAKERjust up-reses it automatically.

23:29SPEAKERI wish that like Rogue Squadron

23:30SPEAKERand those types of games worked well,

23:33SPEAKERbut it also looks like it works well with like,

23:36SPEAKERI don't know, it has so far worked with almost everything

23:38SPEAKERI've thrown out at emulation-wise.

23:40SPEAKERAnd then I can even like, even games that aren't supported,

23:43SPEAKERso Grounded is technically not supported by the Steam Deck,

23:46SPEAKERI can remote into the desktop and play that way,

23:49SPEAKERand that works great.

23:50SPEAKERSo it's a really neat piece of tech.

23:53SPEAKERAnd I think that the Steam,

23:55SPEAKERthe Steam big picture UI is now in beta on the desktop,

23:59SPEAKERso if you want that on your Windows version, you can now.

24:01SPEAKER- It is, it is, in fact.

24:03SPEAKERI, much like the watch, I'm excited to see

24:06SPEAKERwhat maybe a couple more iterations of that thing look like.

24:09SPEAKER- Yeah, I think that's right.

24:10SPEAKERI mean, look, the nice thing that I have

24:12SPEAKERis a natural path for hardware from me downstream,

24:16SPEAKER'cause there's a young child in the house

24:20SPEAKERwho at some point in the future,

24:21SPEAKERwhen a Steam Deck 2 or 3 comes out,

24:22SPEAKERwill be really excited about getting a Steam Deck 1.

24:25SPEAKER- Sure, and that's, you know,

24:26SPEAKERthat's easier than like building her a gaming PC, right?

24:29SPEAKERIt's like, hey--

24:30SPEAKER- We just did that a few months ago.

24:30SPEAKER- Oh, right, okay, well, anyway.

24:33SPEAKER- Look, I built her a gaming PC that I expect to last

24:35SPEAKERuntil she's in high school, probably, so.

24:37SPEAKER- Fair.

24:38SPEAKER- Yeah, she's in good shape.

24:39SPEAKER- I'm sure you have those parts anyway, right?

24:41SPEAKER- I had to buy a motherboard and a CPU, but yeah.

24:43SPEAKER- Okay, that's not so bad.

24:45SPEAKER- No.

24:47SPEAKERWhat else you got?

24:48SPEAKERYou got a--

24:49SPEAKER- I have written on this bulleted list,

24:53SPEAKERdefying gravity in parentheses under the desk.

24:57SPEAKER- Okay, I was really excited at first,

24:58SPEAKER'cause like you found out, you found the anti-grav ray,

25:00SPEAKERyou know how to send people to space.

25:02SPEAKERWe can out-musk the Musk.

25:04SPEAKER- Wait, maybe we could just send him into space.

25:05SPEAKER- I feel like we've been trying, man.

25:08SPEAKERWhy do you think the SpaceX people work so hard?

25:10SPEAKERIt's not 'cause they're hardcore, Brad.

25:12SPEAKER(laughing)

25:13SPEAKER- I'm just gonna like, just picturing a whole bunch

25:16SPEAKERof engineers like cramming him into a locker

25:19SPEAKERthat happens to be on a rocket right before it takes off.

25:22SPEAKER- Look, Elon Musk is the ultimate B-arc person,

25:25SPEAKERit seems like.

25:27SPEAKERAnyway, so, but this is a limited scope for defying gravity.

25:31SPEAKERI too have been defying gravity under my desk this year.

25:33SPEAKER- Yes.

25:34SPEAKER- What's your strat?

25:35SPEAKERWhat have you been doing?

25:36SPEAKER- We've talked about this before,

25:37SPEAKERand it's been a while since I've needed to do it,

25:38SPEAKERand I do have some new stuff to mount under the desk again,

25:41SPEAKERso I figured it might be fun to revisit the topic.

25:45SPEAKERNanotape obviously is like the perennial go-to

25:49SPEAKERaround the tech pod community.

25:51SPEAKER- Do you use it under, I don't use it under the desk.

25:53SPEAKER- So I don't either.

25:54SPEAKERThat's kind of why I wanted to bring this whole thing up,

25:55SPEAKERis pretty much everything I've got under there

25:59SPEAKERmounted right now is using 3M Dual Lock.

26:01SPEAKER- Oh, so you can take it off and on.

26:03SPEAKER- So yeah, so it will snap off.

26:04SPEAKERSo we've talked about that before as well.

26:06SPEAKERA Dual Lock is, well, it's the same thing

26:07SPEAKERas Command Strips, if you're familiar with that brand.

26:10SPEAKER- Oh wait, I thought the Dual Lock was Chunky Velcro.

26:13SPEAKER- It is, but that's also what Command, unless-

26:15SPEAKER- No, Command Strips are like an adhesive gel

26:19SPEAKERthat when you mash them up, they stick,

26:21SPEAKERand then when you pull them horizontally,

26:23SPEAKERthen the distinction breaks, and it'll release clearly.

26:27SPEAKER- So I think we're both right

26:29SPEAKERbecause I'm looking at this stuff.

26:30SPEAKER3M actually markets a whole bunch of products

26:32SPEAKERunder the Command brand.

26:33SPEAKER- Ah.

26:35SPEAKER- So Dual Lock is the Chunky.

26:37SPEAKERIt's, okay, you know, Velcro is like soft on one side

26:41SPEAKERand kind of stiff on the other.

26:44SPEAKERSo the Dual Lock is the same material on both sides.

26:46SPEAKERIt's like kind of hard rigid plastic tongs or teeth.

26:51SPEAKER- Yeah, it feels like industrial strength Velcro kind of.

26:53SPEAKER- Kind of, yeah.

26:54SPEAKERWe've talked about it before.

26:55SPEAKERIt kind of snaps together as opposed to the loop

26:57SPEAKERand hook format of Velcro.

27:00SPEAKER- It makes a clicking sound when you push it together.

27:02SPEAKER- It kind of snaps, clicks.

27:04SPEAKERIt's very strong.

27:05SPEAKER- Yeah, it's super strong.

27:07SPEAKER- I've got an Astro Mixamp Pro stuck

27:09SPEAKERto the underside of the desk with Dual Lock.

27:12SPEAKERSo I've got this Motu M4 now.

27:15SPEAKER- Yes.

27:16SPEAKER- I've also got a little analog audio mixer

27:18SPEAKERthat's also like a bit beefy.

27:20SPEAKERAnd I guess I'm going to go to the Dual Lock again.

27:23SPEAKERThe underside of my desk is like,

27:27SPEAKERI'm trying to decide how to describe it.

27:28SPEAKER- It's like smooth wood.

27:29SPEAKER- Not super smooth.

27:31SPEAKERIt's always not wood.

27:32SPEAKER- Is it like that cardboard stuff?

27:33SPEAKER- It's the cardboardy hard kind of like,

27:37SPEAKERand I don't know that nanotape is going to adhere too well

27:39SPEAKERto something that rough.

27:42SPEAKER- I don't use nanotape.

27:43SPEAKERI use nanotape at 90 degrees

27:45SPEAKERfrom through the force of gravity.

27:47SPEAKER- Oh, interesting.

27:48SPEAKER- Yeah, so like nanotape for me is about

27:51SPEAKERputting my stream deck, like my Elgato little button things

27:55SPEAKERand my wireless charger stand and my,

28:00SPEAKERhonestly, my mouse wrist rest and my keyboard wrist rest

28:04SPEAKERand locking them all in place.

28:06SPEAKER- On the desktop? - Not on the desktop, yeah.

28:09SPEAKERIn a way that they're removable.

28:10SPEAKERUnder my desk, I just use double-sided foam tape

28:12SPEAKERfor everything and then get a putty knife

28:14SPEAKERand scrape it off if I have to.

28:15SPEAKER- Huh, huh, maybe I should,

28:17SPEAKERI mean, that stuff is mega strong, right?

28:19SPEAKER- The double-sided foam tape?

28:21SPEAKER- Yeah.

28:21SPEAKER- You can get it in different strengths.

28:23SPEAKERSo I get the green one, the 3M green,

28:25SPEAKERwhich is the less strong one.

28:26SPEAKERYou can get one that is, if you like,

28:29SPEAKERthe one with the red peel-off stuff

28:31SPEAKERthat's like a goo under there,

28:33SPEAKERif you put that on, will basically never come off.

28:36SPEAKERLike it's on, like my headphone hook is on with that

28:38SPEAKERjust 'cause I knew where it was gonna go

28:40SPEAKERand I was happy with it.

28:42SPEAKERAnd that's what was on the headphone hook.

28:43SPEAKERThe, let's see, I have the headphone hook.

28:46SPEAKERI have a power strip glued up there.

28:49SPEAKERI have a USB hub, double-sided taped up there.

28:52SPEAKERAnd then I did a bunch of wire baskets too.

28:54SPEAKER- Yeah, that's the ultimate goal.

28:56SPEAKERThis desk doesn't really accommodate that,

28:58SPEAKERbut if and when I ever move and build a new desk.

29:02SPEAKER- Yeah, it's time.

29:04SPEAKER- It's gonna be baskets all over the place.

29:06SPEAKERI've got an Ikea cable rack on the back of this desk

29:08SPEAKERwhere it will fit, but more baskets, more baskets.

29:12SPEAKER- The baskets, the one thing I wish

29:14SPEAKERI had bought bigger baskets,

29:16SPEAKER'cause the ones that I bought

29:17SPEAKERseemed like they were big enough

29:18SPEAKERand they are absolutely or not,

29:20SPEAKERbecause like, because it's a sit-stand desk,

29:22SPEAKERthere's a lot of slack that has to go someplace.

29:24SPEAKER- Sure, yeah, that makes sense, tricky.

29:26SPEAKERI'm feeling like when I do a new desk situation,

29:29SPEAKERI might cover like the entire, the underside,

29:34SPEAKERthe entire back half of the desk underside.

29:36SPEAKERI might just mount baskets everywhere back there

29:39SPEAKERand just put all the cables, all the Raspberry Pis,

29:42SPEAKERlike everything in there.

29:44SPEAKER- So I have three 18-inch baskets.

29:46SPEAKERThe thing I'm gonna say is you're gonna have a hard time

29:48SPEAKERputting the Raspberry Pis in there,

29:50SPEAKERbecause the cables are,

29:52SPEAKERlike it gets kind of rowdy in those baskets.

29:56SPEAKERJust because like if you have a,

29:58SPEAKERthink about like a thick power strip cable,

30:00SPEAKERyou gotta fold over three times.

30:02SPEAKERAll that cable has to go someplace

30:03SPEAKERand it has a lot of tension on it.

30:05SPEAKERAnd like, I wouldn't, like I would screw,

30:07SPEAKERRaspberry Pis have holes that you can screw in.

30:09SPEAKERI would just screw them in, probably.

30:14SPEAKERI don't know.

30:15SPEAKER- Anyway, not on the floor.

30:17SPEAKER- I'm all about this.

30:18SPEAKERLike this, between this and the racks

30:19SPEAKERand the reusable zip ties,

30:21SPEAKERmy life has changed for cable management this year.

30:23SPEAKER- Nothing on the floor, everything under the desk.

30:26SPEAKER- I even got one of those snakes

30:28SPEAKERthat has like cable channels in it,

30:29SPEAKERso that when the desk goes up and down,

30:31SPEAKERthe cables all bend nicely together.

30:33SPEAKERVery fancy.

30:35SPEAKERBrad, I've been teaching myself to play the guitar

30:38SPEAKERwith Ubisoft's hit title, "Rocksmith."

30:41SPEAKER- Wow, is that, hang on, is it still "Rocksmith 2014"

30:44SPEAKERor have they put out a-

30:45SPEAKER- No, there's a "Rocksmith as a Service" now, of course.

30:47SPEAKER- That's not 2014, it was an actual,

30:50SPEAKERlike pay subscription service?

30:52SPEAKER- It's like, yeah, I'm paying like,

30:54SPEAKERI think 30 bucks a year or something.

30:55SPEAKERIt wasn't- - Oh, that's not bad.

30:57SPEAKER- Like I looked at it and it was like,

30:58SPEAKERoh, this is way less than paying a person

30:59SPEAKERfor two guitar lessons.

31:00SPEAKERSo here we are. - Yes, is that on Steam

31:03SPEAKERor is that- - It's on Uplay only.

31:05SPEAKER- Oh, wow, okay. - Ubisoft Connect.

31:06SPEAKER- Interesting.

31:08SPEAKER- So, but it works the same way with "Rocksmith."

31:11SPEAKERSo "Rocksmith," if you don't know,

31:12SPEAKERis basically somebody at Ubisoft

31:15SPEAKERor somewhere like 10, 15 years ago looked at Rockband

31:17SPEAKERand was like, you know, we could probably teach people

31:19SPEAKERhow to play guitars for real with similar technology.

31:22SPEAKERAnd it's kind of that,

31:23SPEAKERlike it has a mixture of tutorial videos

31:25SPEAKERand exercises that teach you like chords and fingering

31:28SPEAKERand all of that kind of stuff.

31:30SPEAKERAnd then like there's like arrangements for actual songs.

31:36SPEAKERSo like if you wanna take your classic learning

31:39SPEAKERto play the guitar examples like "Brown Eyed Girl"

31:41SPEAKERand you know, well, "Brown Eyed Girl"

31:44SPEAKERis the one I'm doing right now,

31:44SPEAKERso I'm gonna use that as an example.

31:46SPEAKERAnd it has like chord patterns for acoustic,

31:50SPEAKERlike campfire kind of playing.

31:52SPEAKERIt has electric patterns for if you wanna learn

31:55SPEAKERhow to do the actual fingering and all that.

31:58SPEAKERAnd it kind of automatically,

32:01SPEAKERlike it knows how well you're doing

32:04SPEAKERat your exercises and stuff.

32:05SPEAKERSo it gives you the one

32:06SPEAKERthat it thinks you're probably ready for.

32:08SPEAKERAnd then it presents them to you

32:10SPEAKERin that kind of the notes flying towards you

32:12SPEAKERdown the track way so that you just learn,

32:15SPEAKERlike you can play it like a video game almost.

32:17SPEAKERYou strum when the notes hit the guitar strings

32:19SPEAKERand move your fingers in the right positions as you go.

32:22SPEAKER- I assume, I mean, this game is, franchise is

32:25SPEAKERover a decade old at this point.

32:26SPEAKERI assume the tone detection is pretty much perfect

32:29SPEAKERat this point.

32:30SPEAKER- So, see, they have multiple options for that.

32:32SPEAKERSince I have an audio interface that's a good one

32:35SPEAKERand a nice microphone,

32:36SPEAKERand I'm trying to learn how to play acoustic,

32:38SPEAKERI just aim the microphone that I'm using right now

32:40SPEAKERat the guitar and it works.

32:41SPEAKER- Oh, interesting.

32:42SPEAKERI could be wrong about this.

32:43SPEAKERI wanna say when they launched,

32:44SPEAKERyou had to go through a kind of like XLR to USB adapter

32:48SPEAKERstraight into the computer to detect it.

32:50SPEAKERI didn't realize you could use a microphone now.

32:52SPEAKER- Yeah, so it used to be that you had to plug in a guitar

32:54SPEAKERlike it was going into a special

32:55SPEAKERlike little amplet thing that they sold.

32:57SPEAKER- Right.

32:58SPEAKER- And then they switched to work with most audio interfaces,

33:01SPEAKERbut there were always issues with like focus, right,

33:02SPEAKERand stuff that had wonky drivers.

33:05SPEAKERNow you can use their adapter.

33:07SPEAKERYou can plug in to a USB quarter inch

33:13SPEAKERor if you're playing electric,

33:14SPEAKERor you can use just a normal microphone

33:17SPEAKERand it'll listen to your microphone

33:19SPEAKERand tell you if it's gonna work.

33:20SPEAKER- So as far as the game is concerned,

33:21SPEAKERit just needs audio.

33:22SPEAKERLike however you get the audio too.

33:25SPEAKEROh, that's awesome.

33:26SPEAKERSo I could plug straight into this Motu.

33:30SPEAKER- That's what I'm doing.

33:31SPEAKER- Shit.

33:32SPEAKERWait, you said you're using the mic.

33:33SPEAKER- I'm using the mic, but you could plug it.

33:34SPEAKERLike I have a, if I had an electric,

33:36SPEAKERI could plug straight into the Motu.

33:37SPEAKER- You could go like a quarter,

33:38SPEAKERquarter inch from the guitar,

33:39SPEAKERstraight into the XLR into the, oh my God.

33:42SPEAKER- Well, no, 'cause your XLRs and the Motu are combos.

33:44SPEAKERThey're XLR quarter inch.

33:46SPEAKER- Oh, you could just use the quarter inch.

33:47SPEAKEROh man, like any standard patch cable?

33:50SPEAKER- I would assume it has to be mono, but yeah.

33:53SPEAKER- I might have to look into that.

33:55SPEAKERWhat kind of, I'm sorry.

33:56SPEAKER- Okay, no, go ahead.

33:57SPEAKER- What kind of guitar did you get?

33:58SPEAKER- I just got a $150 Yamaha junior learner guitar.

34:02SPEAKER- Okay.

34:03SPEAKERIt's gotta be, well, no offense to Yamaha or anything.

34:06SPEAKERIt's gotta be a clone, right?

34:07SPEAKERLike I'm sure it's a clone of something.

34:09SPEAKER- It's, it looks like every acoustic guitar ever.

34:12SPEAKER- Most, oh, it's an acoustic, is it an acoustic?

34:15SPEAKEROh, it's not even an acoustic electric.

34:16SPEAKERIt's literally just an acoustic.

34:17SPEAKER- No, I didn't spend money on an acoustic electric.

34:19SPEAKERI just got the acoustic.

34:20SPEAKERThat would be way more than 150 probably.

34:22SPEAKER- Yeah, like I literally,

34:24SPEAKERmy daughter had expressed interest

34:26SPEAKERin learning to play instruments.

34:27SPEAKERAnd so I wanted to have instruments around a year or two ago.

34:30SPEAKER- That's cool.

34:31SPEAKER- Yeah, so it's been, it's honestly,

34:35SPEAKERwhen I'm stressed out about something,

34:36SPEAKERit's just nice to pick up the guitar

34:38SPEAKERand practice chords for a few minutes.

34:40SPEAKER- Extremely, I played a fair amount in college

34:42SPEAKERand then kind of dropped it, but how are you finding it?

34:44SPEAKERLike, is it agreeing with you?

34:47SPEAKER- It's fun.

34:47SPEAKERIt's very, it's satisfying.

34:49SPEAKERIt's nice to be shitty at something again.

34:52SPEAKERNot that I'm the best in the world at everything I do,

34:54SPEAKER'cause that sounds bad, but most of the stuff that I do,

34:57SPEAKERI have a relatively high level of expertise in,

35:00SPEAKERso progress is slow.

35:02SPEAKER- What you're saying is it's nice to learn something.

35:04SPEAKER- Yeah, it's nice to learn something new.

35:06SPEAKERAnd that's been really exciting, so.

35:08SPEAKER- That's awesome.

35:09SPEAKER- Yeah, highly recommended, the Rocksmith.

35:13SPEAKERAnd the new one is much friendlier for acoustic.

35:15SPEAKERThe bad thing is I'm kind of thinking

35:17SPEAKERI might get an electric guitar

35:18SPEAKERto learn some electric stuff now,

35:19SPEAKER'cause I'm getting to the point that I can start playing.

35:20SPEAKER- Wait, what's so bad about that?

35:22SPEAKER- Well, I don't need a bunch of shit in the house, Brad.

35:25SPEAKER- Then you can just like put up some of those wall mounts

35:26SPEAKERand then it looks cool,

35:27SPEAKER'cause like nicely wall mounted guitars are like decor.

35:31SPEAKER- That's true, that is true.

35:33SPEAKER- I'm excited to hear what,

35:35SPEAKERthere's a lot of cool guitars out there.

35:36SPEAKERI'm excited to hear what you might go for if you buy one.

35:39SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, the question is like, I think,

35:42SPEAKERwell, so the takeaway is that the junior Yamaha,

35:46SPEAKERthe frets are a little bit close.

35:48SPEAKERI have big fingers and so it's like a E,

35:51SPEAKERwhat's the chord where it's all three on the same row?

35:55SPEAKER- E.

35:56SPEAKER- A.

35:57SPEAKER- A, yeah, it's like second fret,

36:00SPEAKERsecond string, third string, fourth string.

36:02SPEAKER- Yeah, that's A.

36:03SPEAKER- Yeah, that one's hard on that one

36:06SPEAKERjust 'cause there's not enough space

36:07SPEAKERin between the frets for my fingers.

36:10SPEAKER- Sure, oh, you can, you could just do it,

36:12SPEAKERyou could just index finger that one.

36:13SPEAKER- So yeah, I index finger it, which is, yeah, anyway.

36:17SPEAKER- The guitar's fun, man, I should start playing again.

36:19SPEAKER- You should start playing again.

36:20SPEAKERIt's good, it's like, I can't overemphasize

36:23SPEAKERthe importance of, like it's almost meditative.

36:26SPEAKERIf I wanna sit down and just practice strumming

36:28SPEAKERand practice chords and stuff like that for like 10 minutes,

36:31SPEAKERit feels really good, it's good brain.

36:32SPEAKER- I mean, I don't know, did you say it's good brain?

36:35SPEAKER- Yeah, man, it's good brain.

36:36SPEAKER- Look, I think we could all use a little more good brain.

36:40SPEAKERI mean, you know, there's a, isn't there,

36:42SPEAKERI don't know if there's an actual term

36:43SPEAKERin like cognitive science for that,

36:45SPEAKERbut like there's the whole flow state

36:48SPEAKERthat you also get with like painting and...

36:50SPEAKER- Yeah, exercise too. - Putting a big salt puzzle

36:52SPEAKERtogether, right, like anything that focuses your brain

36:55SPEAKERso much that you can't think about

36:56SPEAKERall the stuff you worry about.

36:57SPEAKER- Well, it's nice to have something like that

36:59SPEAKERthat's not a video game,

37:00SPEAKER'cause usually I use video games for that.

37:03SPEAKERI've also been, this is not on topic,

37:05SPEAKERbut I've also been going to the pool every week

37:06SPEAKERand I've found that like the amount of good brain I get

37:10SPEAKERfrom an hour in the pool swimming laps,

37:12SPEAKERjust where there's nothing I can do

37:13SPEAKERbut think about swimming in a straight line

37:15SPEAKERand keeping going is so high compared to like,

37:19SPEAKERsay taking walks or something like that

37:20SPEAKERthat doesn't require full focus.

37:22SPEAKERIt's really nice.

37:24SPEAKERGet that good brain, man.

37:25SPEAKER- Yeah, I could use some more good brain myself.

37:28SPEAKERMan, I bought this keyboard

37:29SPEAKERright before the pandemic started and never touch it

37:31SPEAKERand I hate myself for it.

37:32SPEAKER- Oh man, you should play.

37:33SPEAKER- I shouldn't, I should not get back into guitar

37:35SPEAKERwhen I've got an instrument sitting here

37:37SPEAKERthat I should be learning.

37:39SPEAKER- Well, you know what, if we, yeah,

37:42SPEAKERthe keyboard's the next thing on the list, so.

37:45SPEAKER- There's some pretty cool keyboards out there these days

37:47SPEAKERas well in terms of USB outputs and Bluetooth and stuff

37:49SPEAKERthat they are now building in there.

37:51SPEAKER- My whole thing is just to buy the cheap one

37:53SPEAKERto see if I'm, like it's the same approach

37:55SPEAKERI use for tools, right?

37:56SPEAKERIs you buy the cheap one, see if you use it.

37:59SPEAKERIf it becomes something that you use enough

38:00SPEAKERthat the cheap one is no longer good enough where it breaks,

38:03SPEAKERthen pass the cheap one on and buy the good one.

38:05SPEAKERBut yeah, I like that that stuff's accessible.

38:09SPEAKER- Totally.

38:10SPEAKERThis one, I mean, this was under 300 bucks,

38:12SPEAKERso I feel like for looking at what keyboards normally cost,

38:17SPEAKERwhich is double that or more,

38:18SPEAKERlike it's a Casio entry level

38:20SPEAKERthat is like really nice for the price.

38:22SPEAKERI thought that felt like, you know, I'll try this,

38:25SPEAKERbut then I didn't really try it as much as I should.

38:27SPEAKERAnyway.

38:28SPEAKER- You should plug it into the Motu,

38:29SPEAKERplug it in that MIDI port on the young Motu,

38:31SPEAKERget it going, you know?

38:31SPEAKER- I could, or I don't even need MIDI.

38:34SPEAKERLike I said, it's got a straight USB out

38:36SPEAKERthat you can just plug it into any computer

38:37SPEAKERand like any kind of sequencer should be able to use it.

38:40SPEAKER- Nice. - Anyway.

38:42SPEAKER- What else you got?

38:45SPEAKER- Gosh, well, this will be real quick.

38:47SPEAKERThe only other one I wrote on my list was,

38:50SPEAKERI wrote open source software, no, really.

38:54SPEAKERWe talk about it all the time

38:54SPEAKERand we'll get through this quickly,

38:56SPEAKERbut it's mostly having moved my NAS over to Linux

38:59SPEAKERand having to do all that setup myself

39:01SPEAKERand like really understand everything

39:03SPEAKERthat is going on in that thing.

39:05SPEAKERLike I'm just kind of gobsmacked all the time

39:07SPEAKERthat all of this stuff is available for free.

39:10SPEAKERAnd I do mean that in the free as in beer sense,

39:14SPEAKERwhich is not often how the kind of an open source cell

39:17SPEAKERlet's mean it.

39:18SPEAKER- Well, we do it, I mean,

39:19SPEAKERwe talk about it on the FOSS pod a fair amount,

39:21SPEAKERbut it's, I think Jeremy Allison,

39:23SPEAKERwho's one of the co-creators of Samba

39:25SPEAKERor one of the maintainers of Samba now said,

39:28SPEAKERit's people who are just building the public utilities

39:30SPEAKERof the technological world, right?

39:33SPEAKERLike that's what's happening over there.

39:35SPEAKER- Right. - And it's kind of amazing.

39:37SPEAKER- That's the thing that has just blown me away

39:39SPEAKERso much is that every time I step back

39:42SPEAKERand look at how much that machine is doing

39:44SPEAKERand the fact that like none of it,

39:46SPEAKERlike in a fully commercialized software world,

39:49SPEAKERlike think about, you know, back in the nineties,

39:50SPEAKERlike we've talked to open source people

39:52SPEAKERabout like back when compilers were very expensive,

39:55SPEAKERyou know, like everything under the old Microsoft regime

39:59SPEAKERwas like hundreds of dollars.

40:00SPEAKER- I spent $600 on Visual C++ at one point.

40:04SPEAKER- Exactly. - Just to be able

40:05SPEAKERto make programs for Windows computers.

40:07SPEAKER- Right, and like, I'm running a bunch

40:08SPEAKERof enterprise grade software on that thing,

40:10SPEAKERmanaging 50 terabytes of storage

40:12SPEAKERand doing all kinds of like super rad, large scale stuff.

40:17SPEAKERAnd it's all just fucking sitting there on the internet

40:19SPEAKERwaiting for anybody to download and use it.

40:21SPEAKERIt's just crazy. - Are you at 50 terabytes?

40:23SPEAKERHoly shit, dude. - Yeah.

40:25SPEAKERIt's actually, I mean, and it's mirrored,

40:26SPEAKERso it's like raw, 100 terabytes,

40:28SPEAKERbut I figured for the resiliency, I was like,

40:31SPEAKERyou know what, I can give up, 50 is probably fine.

40:34SPEAKER- How many drives do you have in there?

40:35SPEAKER- Six. - Okay.

40:36SPEAKERLike it's 14 gigs or 20 gigs or something?

40:38SPEAKER- Six 18s. - Wow.

40:40SPEAKER- Drives got cheap, drives continue to get cheap.

40:43SPEAKER- Yeah, I think you bought your drives at the right time.

40:46SPEAKERMine were more expensive than that.

40:47SPEAKER- Yeah, I caught them on a sale, but there are bigger,

40:50SPEAKERI think I'm gonna say there are like 22 gig,

40:52SPEAKERI mean, terabyte drives getting out there now.

40:54SPEAKER- I think I bought on the last,

40:57SPEAKERI think I bought on the Black Friday sale last year,

40:58SPEAKERa bunch of 12 gig, 12 terabyte drives

41:00SPEAKERor 14 terabyte drives, I can't remember now.

41:02SPEAKER- Also, I've begun shucking.

41:04SPEAKER- Yes, I'm shucking, I'm shuck life, baby.

41:06SPEAKER- I have, I shucked recently for the first time.

41:10SPEAKER- Yeah.

41:11SPEAKER- I bought a little,

41:12SPEAKERI guess that's something I'm thankful for.

41:13SPEAKERI bought a little four bay USB hard drive enclosure.

41:16SPEAKERIt looks like a tiny PC,

41:18SPEAKERlike the form factor looks exactly like a tiny tower PC.

41:21SPEAKER- Aww, that's cute.

41:22SPEAKER- Except for four removable bays on the front

41:24SPEAKERwhere you stick the hard drives in.

41:26SPEAKER- Oh, that's cool.

41:27SPEAKER- And it's USB three out.

41:29SPEAKERAnd yeah, got it picked up to my NAS currently,

41:32SPEAKERlike it's gonna move in the other room,

41:34SPEAKERit's gonna be my backup volume

41:35SPEAKER'cause it turns out you need a lot of hard drives

41:37SPEAKERto backup a pool that size.

41:39SPEAKER- Are you noticing perf differences

41:41SPEAKERon the USB three interface or?

41:43SPEAKER- Per throughput is not as high as I'd hoped.

41:46SPEAKERLike the read and write is topping out

41:48SPEAKERat about 250 megabytes a second, which like, it's not bad.

41:51SPEAKERI don't know if that's just the hard drives limiting it

41:53SPEAKERat that point 'cause USB three throughput

41:55SPEAKERis like almost three times that much.

41:58SPEAKER- It could be the backplane of the,

41:59SPEAKERit could be the controller too.

42:00SPEAKER- That's possible.

42:01SPEAKERI mean, like it's not terrible.

42:02SPEAKERIt's like, by and large,

42:04SPEAKERit's gonna be a backup target over the network.

42:06SPEAKERSo it's gonna be limited to a hundred anyway.

42:08SPEAKERSo it's not the end of the world.

42:09SPEAKERI had hoped it would be a little faster for reads,

42:12SPEAKERbut anyway.

42:12SPEAKER- Is it hooked up to like a raspberry PI or something?

42:15SPEAKER- Right now it's hooked up to my big X86 NAS,

42:18SPEAKERbut it will be hooked up to a PI four going forward.

42:21SPEAKER- Nice.

42:22SPEAKER- Also, I didn't have to do the little 3.3 volt tape trick.

42:26SPEAKER- Oh yeah, I didn't either on mine.

42:28SPEAKERI had the kept on tape ready to go and everything.

42:29SPEAKER- Right, I started to buy some and I was like,

42:31SPEAKERI'll just see if it works and it totally did.

42:33SPEAKERI guess it depends on what kind of power supply

42:35SPEAKERyou're hooking them up to.

42:37SPEAKER- Yeah, I think it also depends on which drives,

42:39SPEAKERwhich vendor you bought to chuck the,

42:41SPEAKERlike I shucked some Western digital drives

42:43SPEAKERand they were fine.

42:43SPEAKER- Yeah, that's what I've got also.

42:46SPEAKER- I need to buy, that reminds me,

42:48SPEAKERI need to buy a same size drive I have now

42:50SPEAKERfor a hot swap, a hot failover.

42:54SPEAKERJust in case.

42:57SPEAKERLet's see, we've got, I've got AirPod Pros on my list.

43:00SPEAKERI did not buy the new AirPod Pros,

43:02SPEAKERbut I just got the firmware update

43:03SPEAKERthat they gave that adds the new transparency feature

43:07SPEAKERfrom the AirPod Pro 2s to the AirPod Pro 1s.

43:10SPEAKERAnd they are probably my favorite technology purchase

43:13SPEAKERof the last like 10 years.

43:14SPEAKER- Jeez, that's a big claim.

43:19SPEAKER- I mean, it's because there's such a huge leap

43:22SPEAKERover the previous generations.

43:25SPEAKERLike they add functionality that just doesn't exist,

43:29SPEAKERdidn't exist for me before in that I can leave them in

43:33SPEAKERas long as I want, as much as I want.

43:35SPEAKERI can always have music or a podcast if I want,

43:36SPEAKERif I want some noise.

43:38SPEAKERThe trans, they connect to the TVs so seamlessly

43:41SPEAKERthat it's almost annoying sometimes when you're watching,

43:44SPEAKERlike if Gina's watching something on her phone

43:45SPEAKERin the living room, then it keeps popping and saying,

43:47SPEAKERhey, your AirPod's here, you wanna connect to the TV?

43:49SPEAKERBut it means that I can like lay in bed

43:51SPEAKERand put TV on at night and not wake up somebody

43:54SPEAKERin the adjoining bedrooms or even Gina if she's in bed.

44:00SPEAKERIt means that like we can have two different things

44:02SPEAKERon in the living room and not bother each other,

44:05SPEAKERwhich is nice, but still be in the same place.

44:08SPEAKERThe noise canceling is great, it's not as good.

44:13SPEAKERI've had better noise canceling, still very, very good.

44:16SPEAKERThe transparency mode is the thing that's magic

44:18SPEAKER'cause it means that I can switch from noise canceling

44:20SPEAKERand usually when you use transparency mode

44:22SPEAKERon a pair of noise canceling headphones,

44:23SPEAKERit sounds like you're on a shitty phone call

44:25SPEAKERwhere you get like, there's background hiss

44:28SPEAKERand you're picking up all of the room noise

44:31SPEAKERand somebody clinks a fork on something,

44:33SPEAKERyou hear it as if your ears are resting on the plate.

44:37SPEAKERIt sounds like you almost can't tell

44:39SPEAKERthat you have headphones on with the new transparency mode.

44:41SPEAKERIt's really, really cool.

44:43SPEAKER- That's very cool.

44:44SPEAKER- Which means you don't have to take your headphones out

44:45SPEAKERto talk to somebody, which is the upshot.

44:47SPEAKERAnyway, I feel a little bit weird

44:50SPEAKERabout the social consequences of transparency mode.

44:54SPEAKER- Yeah, you know, something you're used to.

44:56SPEAKERWell, hey, look, I don't wanna put anybody on blast,

45:00SPEAKERbut let's say if you were to live with someone

45:01SPEAKERwho likes to walk around with headphones all the time

45:03SPEAKERand that don't have that feature,

45:05SPEAKERI would much rather they wore headphones that did, so.

45:09SPEAKER- I'm gonna go ahead and tell you,

45:09SPEAKERyou should, Christmas is just around the corner, Brad.

45:13SPEAKER- Ooh, that's making an investment in myself.

45:15SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like a Homer bowling ball.

45:17SPEAKER- Right.

45:18SPEAKER- But for your partner's ears.

45:20SPEAKERMy partner does the same thing, it's bad.

45:22SPEAKERShe listens to podcasts all the time

45:23SPEAKERand she talks to the podcasts.

45:27SPEAKER- Oh, you know what?

45:28SPEAKERSure, yes, okay, there's a little bit of that around here too.

45:30SPEAKER- Sometimes, sometimes, look,

45:31SPEAKERI'm sure that people who are listening to this podcast

45:33SPEAKERhave occasionally yelled at the radio in the car.

45:35SPEAKERYou know how that happens.

45:36SPEAKER- I get it.

45:37SPEAKERI would yell at me too.

45:40SPEAKER- Let's see, other stuff on my list.

45:42SPEAKERThese are still thankfuls.

45:44SPEAKERLongtime listeners will be familiar with them.

45:46SPEAKERGood tools, man.

45:48SPEAKERI love, I got a fancy Exacto set

45:52SPEAKERto replace my old handle that I lost someplace.

45:56SPEAKERI just had the one stick, the basic-ass Exacto knife.

45:59SPEAKERI got one that has a screwdriver handle

46:01SPEAKERand a finer handle.

46:05SPEAKERIt's so nice.

46:06SPEAKERWhen we were carving pumpkins,

46:07SPEAKERI took the Exacto knives out there

46:08SPEAKERand it was what normally is an hour long endeavor

46:11SPEAKERwith a serrated kitchen knife.

46:13SPEAKERTook like five minutes with the Exactos, it was fantastic.

46:15SPEAKER- Yeah, I can't speak for everybody.

46:18SPEAKERMaybe I'm weird, but I have to tell myself, go get stuff.

46:22SPEAKERAnd it's not like, oh, I don't want to spend 20 bucks

46:24SPEAKERto get better screwdrivers or something.

46:25SPEAKERIt's more, I don't think about it.

46:29SPEAKERI went so long without a headlamp, for example.

46:32SPEAKERAnd it's not like, oh, I can't make myself

46:34SPEAKERspend eight bucks on a headlamp.

46:35SPEAKERI just didn't think, it never occurred to me like,

46:37SPEAKERhey, you should get a headlamp.

46:38SPEAKER- There's a better way to do this thing.

46:40SPEAKER- Right. - Yeah.

46:41SPEAKER- And then once I got one, I was like,

46:42SPEAKERwhat the fuck have I been doing all these years?

46:45SPEAKERLiterally trying to drag a lamp down onto the floor

46:47SPEAKERto build a PC so I can see in the case.

46:50SPEAKERIt's like, at least for me,

46:52SPEAKERI almost feel like you need to go out

46:54SPEAKERand actively do research on the things you do

46:56SPEAKERto see if there is something better you could be getting.

46:58SPEAKER- I think some people listen to podcasts like ours

47:00SPEAKERfor that information too.

47:02SPEAKER- See, when you spend as much time making podcasts as I do,

47:06SPEAKERthey don't listen to many.

47:07SPEAKER- Well, you're really good at, I mean, look,

47:09SPEAKERhere's the thing, we have a lot of experience in the tools.

47:11SPEAKERLike I put some of the Silicon Lube

47:15SPEAKERon my podcast mic arm yesterday, and now listen to this.

47:20SPEAKER- And is that, which mic arm is that?

47:22SPEAKER- It's the same one you have, the Rode PSA1.

47:24SPEAKER- Mine, I have got a lot of issues with mine.

47:26SPEAKERDo you have your RE20 on there?

47:28SPEAKER- Uh-huh.

47:29SPEAKER- Is it, do you find that to be too heavy for this arm?

47:32SPEAKER- Nope.

47:33SPEAKER- Okay, I think there's something wrong with my arm.

47:34SPEAKER- You can cinch down the middle if it needs to be tighter,

47:36SPEAKERthe bolt in the middle. - I've tried that.

47:38SPEAKERHow do you do that?

47:38SPEAKERIt's not just that screw.

47:39SPEAKER- It's just the screw, you have to, it's both sides though.

47:43SPEAKER- Wait, the other side is smooth,

47:44SPEAKERit doesn't move a notch. - Oh, the rivet on mine.

47:46SPEAKERHuh, I don't remember.

47:47SPEAKERI had to do it on one of the ones at the test office once,

47:50SPEAKERbut I don't know what we did. - This thing is losing tension

47:52SPEAKERrapidly to the point that it'll just like start collapsing

47:55SPEAKERin the middle of the day.

47:56SPEAKER- You should send them a note.

47:57SPEAKERThey do pretty good warranty services in my experience.

48:00SPEAKER- Yeah, maybe I should get in touch with them.

48:02SPEAKERI've had issues, I've also just thought about replacing it.

48:04SPEAKER- But like, so on the tools front,

48:07SPEAKERI have a set of iFixit screwdrivers that I bought

48:10SPEAKER10 or 12 years ago now that have the spinny top,

48:13SPEAKERthey're like the snap-on style.

48:15SPEAKERAnd it's like the most used screwdrivers in the house,

48:20SPEAKERyou know, they have, I have three different sizes of,

48:22SPEAKERor four different sizes of just a traditional

48:25SPEAKERPhillips screwdriver.

48:26SPEAKERIt has a flat screwdriver, it has hex heads,

48:29SPEAKERit has a couple of Allen wrenches

48:30SPEAKERin like common taking stuff apart sizes.

48:33SPEAKERIt's an absolute delight.

48:34SPEAKERIt makes me happy every time I use it.

48:35SPEAKER- If you take things apart, having a set like that

48:38SPEAKERwhere you'll just never have to worry

48:39SPEAKERabout having the right screwdriver again or not.

48:41SPEAKER- Well, yeah, and then I have a larger set of bits,

48:44SPEAKERthat's one with bits that is like,

48:46SPEAKERthese are no bit screwdrivers,

48:48SPEAKERwhich are sometimes nice for precision.

48:51SPEAKERI have a larger set that has a bazillion security bits.

48:53SPEAKERSo if there's whatever I need to open, I can open.

48:57SPEAKERHaving a nice multimeter is really nice

48:59SPEAKERif you do electronic stuff.

49:00SPEAKERIf you want to, even if it's just for continuity testing

49:02SPEAKERto get an easy way to clamp on wires and get buzzes,

49:06SPEAKERstuff like that is really nice.

49:07SPEAKERHaving a pair of needle nose pliers,

49:09SPEAKERhaving like a pair of forceps and stuff like that

49:13SPEAKERfor small work is really convenient.

49:15SPEAKER- Yeah, I've, since we started this podcast,

49:17SPEAKERI mean, I'm partially taking a cue from you,

49:19SPEAKERlike also talking to Kyle Wiens and stuff like that.

49:21SPEAKERLike I have, I've been slowly building a tool drawer

49:25SPEAKERof pretty much all the stuff you just rattled off.

49:27SPEAKERLike, oh, also, first of all,

49:29SPEAKERis multimeter actually a valid pronunciation?

49:31SPEAKER'Cause that's how I started out.

49:31SPEAKER- I just call it a multimeter, I don't know.

49:32SPEAKERI'm always bad, like, look,

49:34SPEAKERI'm bad on pronunciation, it's established.

49:36SPEAKER- I also started out calling it a multimeter

49:38SPEAKERand I think was told that that's maybe not the way.

49:43SPEAKER- That's the way my high school electronics teacher said it,

49:45SPEAKERbut I grew up in Northeast Tennessee, so I don't know.

49:48SPEAKER- I don't care, I don't care what state you were in.

49:50SPEAKERIf a high school electronics teacher can call it that,

49:52SPEAKERthen I'm gonna call it that.

49:54SPEAKER- Yeah, the, I'm trying to think the other stuff,

49:56SPEAKERlike I bought a roll of gaff tape this year

49:58SPEAKER'cause I needed to tape stuff to the floor

50:00SPEAKERwhen we were in that rental house in July.

50:02SPEAKERAnd why the hell I haven't just spent 20 bucks

50:04SPEAKERon a roll of gaff tape for stuff around the house,

50:07SPEAKERI don't know.

50:08SPEAKERIt's really convenient 'cause it goes on and off easily.

50:10SPEAKERLike it sticks really well,

50:11SPEAKERbut it peels off with leaving and leaves nothing behind.

50:14SPEAKER- Yeah, also at first when I was buying this stuff,

50:17SPEAKERI was frustrated that like you can't get anything

50:20SPEAKERin a quantity less than about a hundred times what you need.

50:23SPEAKER- Gaff tape.

50:23SPEAKER- Or anything, tape, screws.

50:25SPEAKER- Oh yeah, yeah.

50:26SPEAKER- You name it, like things that come in

50:28SPEAKERto little quantities, like nylon screw set I bought

50:32SPEAKERor whatever, but like over time it has proven to be like,

50:35SPEAKERoh, like I bought little stick-on reparized feet

50:38SPEAKERthat you can put on things to give them feet.

50:41SPEAKERAnd like, I only needed four of them

50:42SPEAKERand I got a set of 120,

50:44SPEAKERbut you keep that stuff around long enough

50:46SPEAKERand all of a sudden you start realizing like,

50:48SPEAKERoh, I am going to need these things periodically.

50:51SPEAKER- Stuff needs feet.

50:52SPEAKER- It's actually nice to have all this stuff around

50:54SPEAKER'cause I've like reached in there and grabbed a thing

50:57SPEAKERthat I already had numerous times now

50:58SPEAKERand it's possibly the best feeling.

51:01SPEAKER- Yeah.

51:02SPEAKERLet's see, other stuff, still thankful.

51:04SPEAKER- I love vacuum, I still have vacuum bottles.

51:07SPEAKERI know that the battery powered mugs are all the rage now,

51:10SPEAKERbut I'll put my coffee in a vacuum bottle

51:11SPEAKERand drink out of that all day.

51:13SPEAKER- What makes it a vacuum bottle

51:14SPEAKERas opposed to just like an insulated thermos?

51:16SPEAKER- Well, the insulator is the vacuum.

51:18SPEAKER- Okay.

51:19SPEAKER- So on a vacuum bottle, there's two bottles, basically.

51:23SPEAKERThere's one inside and one outside.

51:25SPEAKERThe inside one is only connected

51:26SPEAKERwith a really, really limited amount of material.

51:28SPEAKERSo there's very little heat transfer

51:30SPEAKERfrom the inner bottle to the outside world.

51:31SPEAKER- Oh, interesting.

51:32SPEAKER- And then the vacuum insulates you from,

51:35SPEAKERinsulates whatever your beverage is.

51:36SPEAKER- Oh, is the space in between the two, it's airtight?

51:40SPEAKER- Yeah, it's airtight and not empty, but like low.

51:44SPEAKERThere's not a lot of stuff in there.

51:45SPEAKER- Interesting.

51:46SPEAKERIt's much like intergalactic space.

51:48SPEAKERIt's not quite a true, avoid a true vacuum,

51:53SPEAKERbut pretty close.

51:54SPEAKER- I'm gonna say less of a vacuum than intergalactic space.

51:58SPEAKERLike more stuff in there than an inner.

51:59SPEAKERI think intergalactic space probably has less stuff

52:02SPEAKERthan an inside my coffee bottle vacuum,

52:03SPEAKERbut I could be wrong.

52:04SPEAKER- That's possible, that's possible.

52:05SPEAKER- I feel like it'd be a little bit dangerous

52:07SPEAKERif it was that much of a vacuum.

52:08SPEAKER- Interstellar space, I understand,

52:10SPEAKERis actually like surprisingly full.

52:12SPEAKERI mean, we're still talking on the order

52:13SPEAKERof like atoms per volume.

52:16SPEAKER- Yeah, it's atoms per cubic mile or something, right?

52:18SPEAKER- Right, but there is more,

52:19SPEAKERthere are more atoms floating around out there

52:21SPEAKERin between solar systems than you think, I think.

52:24SPEAKER- I mean, look, it's why when we go to Alpha Centauri,

52:27SPEAKERwe're gonna need a whole bunch of ice

52:28SPEAKERon the front of the spaceship.

52:29SPEAKER- That's right.

52:31SPEAKER- Speaking of space, I'm thankful for the,

52:33SPEAKERone of my highlights of this year has been watching,

52:37SPEAKERI signed up for the JWST newsletter from NASA.

52:41SPEAKERSo when there's new pictures, I get an email and it's like,

52:43SPEAKERhey, what awesome thing am I gonna see today?

52:46SPEAKER- That was gonna be my first question was like,

52:47SPEAKERwhat's the best like concentrated way

52:49SPEAKERto keep up with this stuff?

52:50SPEAKERIt sounds like that.

52:51SPEAKER- I would have said Twitter a few weeks ago.

52:53SPEAKERThey post a lot of pictures on Twitter and Instagram too.

52:57SPEAKER- Does the newsletter, do you get like straight up

52:59SPEAKERlike TIFF links in the newsletter?

53:01SPEAKER- I, no, you do not get TIFF links.

53:03SPEAKERIt's like, hey, here's a picture of a thing

53:04SPEAKERand a little paragraph about why it's cool.

53:06SPEAKERIt's basically the same stuff that's on the JWST

53:08SPEAKERlike hot images page or whatever.

53:10SPEAKER- I was, 'cause you know, you don't wanna deal

53:12SPEAKERwith like crappy Twitter image compression.

53:13SPEAKERIf they can just funnel you straight to the like 10,000

53:16SPEAKERby 10,000 source image.

53:18SPEAKER- Look, there's a couple that have been good enough

53:19SPEAKERthat I was like, I'm gonna go grab this one

53:21SPEAKERand put on my phone wallpaper.

53:22SPEAKER- Sure. - So yeah.

53:25SPEAKERAnd then vaccines, man.

53:28SPEAKER- Hey, shout out to vaccines.

53:29SPEAKER- Yeah, turns out sometimes you need them.

53:34SPEAKER- We went to Disneyland and didn't get sick.

53:36SPEAKERWe, you know, hey, that seems nice.

53:40SPEAKERI'm a big fan.

53:41SPEAKERSo go get vaccinated.

53:44SPEAKERI need to still get my flu shot.

53:45SPEAKERI'm bad and haven't done mine yet.

53:46SPEAKER- Oh gosh, yeah, I don't know if you've seen

53:48SPEAKERthat apparently the flu is extra bad this year,

53:51SPEAKERlike extra, extra bad.

53:52SPEAKER- The flu and RSV together is putting people

53:55SPEAKERin a hospital again.

53:55SPEAKER- Yes, I started to ask if there's such a thing

53:58SPEAKERas an RSV vaccine, but I don't know if there is.

54:00SPEAKER- I don't think so.

54:01SPEAKER- It seems to, I think it mostly

54:03SPEAKERonly affects children generally.

54:05SPEAKER- It seems to be worse in kids, yeah.

54:06SPEAKER- Yeah.

54:07SPEAKER- Everybody I know who's gotten the RS,

54:09SPEAKERhas had the RSV go through their house

54:10SPEAKERhas strongly regretted it though.

54:12SPEAKER- Yes, yes, yes, I know people with small children

54:16SPEAKERwho have been hospitalized

54:17SPEAKERand like in a very precarious situation.

54:20SPEAKER- It's not great.

54:22SPEAKER- And apparently, I don't know if this like maybe owes

54:24SPEAKERto more testing because people are in a testing mood

54:27SPEAKERafter the last few years, but apparently,

54:29SPEAKERapparently we're like 5X the normal number of flu cases

54:32SPEAKERfor this time of year.

54:33SPEAKER- Great, that's fantastic.

54:35SPEAKER- Yeah, it's, apparently they did a good job

54:37SPEAKERof identifying the dominant strains

54:39SPEAKERin the flu shot this year though.

54:41SPEAKER- Oh, so the vaccine, I might go do that

54:44SPEAKERafter we finish this episode.

54:45SPEAKER- Yeah, you should, the ones that are predominant

54:47SPEAKERare the ones that the vaccine cover,

54:49SPEAKERthe flu shot covers this year, so.

54:51SPEAKER- That's nice, that's good.

54:52SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't wanna get the flu

54:54SPEAKERand be sick for two weeks, that sucks.

54:56SPEAKER- Oh.

54:57SPEAKER- So I think that's, I mean, there's some more stuff on here

54:59SPEAKERwe could hit, but I think, I feel like that's a good list

55:02SPEAKERof things I'm thankful for.

55:03SPEAKER- Yeah.

55:04SPEAKER- Oh, we didn't talk about the K blocks

55:06SPEAKERwhen we were doing the under desk stuff.

55:07SPEAKER- K blocks?

55:08SPEAKER- K blocks, K blocks are these little,

55:10SPEAKERthey're like stick on pegs.

55:13SPEAKER- Oh, wow.

55:14SPEAKER- It's like a grid of pegs with knobs on the end

55:15SPEAKERand you can just kind of tuck cables into them.

55:17SPEAKER- Look at that, do the knobs screw off?

55:19SPEAKER- No, the knobs, it's all like cast plastic, yeah.

55:22SPEAKER- It's probably flexible enough to just bend stuff around

55:26SPEAKERand shove cables in there.

55:27SPEAKER- Yeah, they're like hard rubber kind of,

55:28SPEAKERso you can pull the cable in, it won't come out easily,

55:33SPEAKERbut it's easy to get out if you wanna get it out.

55:35SPEAKER- Do these come with their own adhesive

55:36SPEAKERor do you stick them on yourself?

55:38SPEAKER- They have the heavy duty 3M Red stuff on the back,

55:41SPEAKERso when you put them on, they're pretty much on.

55:43SPEAKER- Never coming off?

55:44SPEAKER- Well, I mean, you can get them off.

55:46SPEAKERI've had to pull one or two off, but it's not,

55:49SPEAKERI would make sure you get them where you want them.

55:52SPEAKER- Okay, I've never seen these before.

55:53SPEAKERThis is C-A-B-L-O-X to be clear, if you want.

55:55SPEAKER- C-A-B-L-O-X, we'll put some Amazon,

55:58SPEAKERmaybe Amazon affiliate links

55:59SPEAKERif people wanna help support the pod in the notes.

56:06SPEAKERBut yeah, they're really good.

56:07SPEAKERI like them a lot and I put them on the,

56:10SPEAKERso I put them on the lips, like under the lips of the desk

56:12SPEAKERor on the back edge sometimes so that they hold,

56:16SPEAKERlike it basically gives me a straight shot

56:18SPEAKERfor the cable to where it's gonna come out.

56:20SPEAKERSo like where the monitor arm goes,

56:24SPEAKERthere's one right next to it,

56:24SPEAKERso they can just shoot straight up there

56:26SPEAKERinto the cable channel in the monitor arm, stuff like that.

56:28SPEAKER- I've thought, as I continue to fantasize about the desk,

56:31SPEAKERI might put together eventually,

56:34SPEAKERlike I've almost thought about covering

56:35SPEAKERthe underside of the desk with some intermediate material

56:38SPEAKERto stick things to in case you don't,

56:40SPEAKER'cause like the type of stuff you're describing

56:42SPEAKERsounds like it would, at a minimum,

56:44SPEAKERbe very difficult to get off of the actual wood surface,

56:47SPEAKERif not, like maybe also damage it to get it off.

56:49SPEAKERAnd like, I almost feel like maybe having something

56:52SPEAKERin between there that you care about less would be nice.

56:54SPEAKERI don't know, you tell me.

56:55SPEAKER- So the way I think about it is the desktops

56:59SPEAKERare relatively inexpensive if you wanna replace.

57:02SPEAKERLike I bought the, I mean, I didn't buy it.

57:03SPEAKERSteelcase sent me an evaluation to a Steelcase solo desk

57:08SPEAKERa couple of years ago, or last year, I guess,

57:11SPEAKERwhich is their like entry-level sit stand.

57:14SPEAKERAnd I will replace the top.

57:17SPEAKERI'm less worried about that than I am about,

57:20SPEAKERlike I've been screwing stuff into it, I don't care.

57:23SPEAKER- Is the tops modular?

57:25SPEAKER- Yeah, the tops, you can always unscrew,

57:26SPEAKERlike almost any desktop, you can take the top off

57:29SPEAKERand go to Ikea or go get a custom top made or whatever.

57:32SPEAKER- Okay, interesting.

57:33SPEAKER- 'Cause all it is is an inch thick piece of wood

57:35SPEAKERor composite or whatever.

57:37SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, I think I've mentioned it before,

57:38SPEAKERI probably would just do the butcher block countertop desktop

57:42SPEAKERwith adjustable legs and just do it myself.

57:45SPEAKER- You know, it's funny, I looked at,

57:47SPEAKERwhen I got this one, they had a whiteboard top option,

57:50SPEAKERa dry erase top option that I thought about,

57:52SPEAKERand I was like, I think it's gonna be too slidey.

57:55SPEAKER- That, yeah, I don't think that'd be great

57:56SPEAKERfor like drinks and stuff,

57:57SPEAKERbut I could kind of see the appeal.

57:59SPEAKER- I like, the idea of just being able to write notes

58:01SPEAKERon the desktop is really compelling.

58:04SPEAKERBut I was like, but I also like to do like Lego builds

58:06SPEAKERand stuff, and with the lights, it's too shiny, I thought.

58:08SPEAKERSo anyway, I guess that'll do it for us this week.

58:12SPEAKERI hope you have a happy Thanksgiving, my friend.

58:14SPEAKER- Thank you, same to you.

58:15SPEAKERI think it's gonna be a chill, uneventful one.

58:18SPEAKER- Yeah, I hope next year we can get back

58:21SPEAKERto the big Thanksgiving again, I think.

58:23SPEAKER- Let's hope.

58:24SPEAKER- Although we're doing a reduced cook as a result, so.

58:31SPEAKEROnly two pies.

58:33SPEAKER- Only two?

58:34SPEAKERWait, how do you pick which two?

58:35SPEAKER- Pumpkin and apple, it's real easy.

58:37SPEAKER- Hang on, let me think.

58:39SPEAKERWhat was your common third one was pecan?

58:41SPEAKER- Pecan, usually, yeah.

58:43SPEAKER- I'm trying to think back.

58:45SPEAKER- Yeah, that's probably, I can't believe I'm saying this

58:47SPEAKERbecause generally pecan is like damn near

58:49SPEAKERmy favorite pie in existence,

58:50SPEAKERbut like in the context of your pies.

58:55SPEAKER- I like the pecan, like the pecan I make is pretty good.

58:59SPEAKERI'm not a huge pecan, like it's one of the only pecans

59:02SPEAKERI'll go for.

59:03SPEAKERI do America's Test Kitchen recipe pies

59:05SPEAKERjust for people who are not long-time listeners.

59:07SPEAKER- Your pumpkin, and again, I'm not even

59:09SPEAKERthe biggest pumpkin pie fan,

59:10SPEAKERbut your pumpkin pie is so sublime.

59:13SPEAKER- Yeah, that pumpkin recipe, you cook the pumpkin first

59:16SPEAKERand it makes it very rich and delicious

59:18SPEAKERand it doesn't taste like it came from a can.

59:21SPEAKER- Oh, we can't talk about your pies anymore.

59:23SPEAKER- I'm sorry, Brad.

59:24SPEAKERBut what we can talk about is supporting the show,

59:27SPEAKERwhich we are eminently thankful for our patrons.

59:30SPEAKER- We sure are.

59:31SPEAKER- If you wanna find out how you can support

59:32SPEAKERBrad and Will Made at TechPod,

59:33SPEAKERyou can go to patreon.com/techpod.

59:36SPEAKERAgain, it's patreon.com/techpod,

59:39SPEAKERwhere for as little as two bucks a month,

59:41SPEAKERyou can support the show and join

59:42SPEAKERthe fabulous TechPod Discord.

59:44SPEAKERYou can gain access to like,

59:45SPEAKERit's like 30 patron episodes now, right?

59:48SPEAKER- Yeah, 31 I think was the last one.

59:50SPEAKER- Yeah, if you wanna get in there,

59:52SPEAKERyou get almost, you get a whole year worth

59:54SPEAKERof bi-monthly, bi-weekly patron episodes

59:57SPEAKERand you just hammer through 'em, extra TechPod.

59:59SPEAKER- That's right.

1:00:01SPEAKER- And other great stuff as well.

1:00:02SPEAKERSo thanks everybody for supporting the show,

1:00:05SPEAKERbut extra, oh wait, is this the last episode of the month?

1:00:08SPEAKER- No, we got one more.

1:00:09SPEAKER- We got one more, but extra special thanks

1:00:12SPEAKERto our executive producer tier patrons,

1:00:14SPEAKERincluding Paddle Creek Games,

1:00:15SPEAKERmakers of Fractured Veil, Andrew Slosky,

1:00:18SPEAKERBunny Thorpe Snowfall Crimes,

1:00:20SPEAKERI think Bunny Fiend got some snow this week.

1:00:24SPEAKER- Jealous.

1:00:24SPEAKER- Just Wedge, Joel Krauska, Twinkle Twinkie,

1:00:27SPEAKERand James Kamik, I appreciate you all so much.

1:00:29SPEAKER- So do I.

1:00:29SPEAKER- I wish we had, I wish we had,

1:00:32SPEAKERlike I saw this, look, I know the people in Buffalo

1:00:34SPEAKERare probably already sick of the snow,

1:00:37SPEAKERbut I saw the snow in Buffalo, I was like, oh man,

1:00:39SPEAKERit was really cool getting snowed in this spring.

1:00:41SPEAKER- I'm Googling it right now.

1:00:45SPEAKER- Once I was pretty sure we weren't gonna have

1:00:46SPEAKERto eat each other to survive.

1:00:51SPEAKERYeah, it was pretty cool.

1:00:52SPEAKER- Oh, I'm looking at pictures now.

1:00:53SPEAKERI mean, look, I get why people who live in snow-laden areas

1:00:58SPEAKERare sick of snow, but I only have so much sympathy

1:01:01SPEAKER'cause I'm so jealous.

1:01:03SPEAKERIt's the most fun hassle I can imagine.

1:01:05SPEAKEROr not just fun, but peaceful, it's beautiful and quiet.

1:01:10SPEAKERI miss that, I miss the sound dampening of snow.

1:01:13SPEAKER- Yeah, that's the thing, when the power was out

1:01:16SPEAKERand I walked down to pick up food

1:01:18SPEAKERfrom the takeout restaurant that had power

1:01:19SPEAKERdown the end of the street, and it was snowing and quiet,

1:01:23SPEAKERand there were no cars, and there was no electric hum

1:01:25SPEAKERfrom the power lines overhead, I was just like,

1:01:28SPEAKERah, this is really nice.

1:01:29SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, back home, I'm sure you know,

1:01:31SPEAKERI mean, granted we lived in somewhat rural areas

1:01:34SPEAKERto begin with, but the world is dead silent.

1:01:38SPEAKERYou walk out the door and you just can't hear anything.

1:01:40SPEAKERIt's the most amazing thing.

1:01:41SPEAKER- Yeah, even cars driving by and stuff like that,

1:01:43SPEAKERyou don't hear 'em until they're really close.

1:01:45SPEAKER- If I could wish for it, if I could wish for

1:01:47SPEAKERa no calamity blizzard in San Francisco,

1:01:50SPEAKERI would take it in a heartbeat.

1:01:53SPEAKERI would love-- - Can you imagine the chaos?

1:01:54SPEAKER- That's what I'm saying, let's throw out the proviso

1:01:58SPEAKERthat nobody would actually get hurt.

1:02:00SPEAKERWow, 'cause if it actually happened,

1:02:02SPEAKERa lot of people would get fucked up in this city

1:02:04SPEAKER'cause they would have no idea what they were doing,

1:02:07SPEAKERbut I would love two feet of snow

1:02:09SPEAKERto get dumped on this city sometime.

1:02:10SPEAKER- Just like the sidewalk situation

1:02:12SPEAKERwith the hills would be a nightmare.

1:02:13SPEAKERAnyway, yeah, I can't even imagine what chaos it would,

1:02:17SPEAKERit's bad when it rains here.

1:02:19SPEAKERBut anyway, yeah, thanks, special thanks

1:02:21SPEAKERto all of our patrons.

1:02:22SPEAKERPeople are asking about a Mastodon tier reward

1:02:25SPEAKERor Mastodon access.

1:02:27SPEAKERI'm curious, if people think that's something interesting,

1:02:30SPEAKERplease send us messages, either on Mastodon or on Twitter.

1:02:34SPEAKER'Cause we're trying to take the temperature.

1:02:36SPEAKERThe challenge of that right now

1:02:37SPEAKERis we can't find a way to audit,

1:02:39SPEAKERthere isn't an easy way to automatically grant access

1:02:42SPEAKERto that to people who are on the right tier.

1:02:45SPEAKERAnd there are costs associated with the server,

1:02:47SPEAKERespecially if we have too much usage.

1:02:50SPEAKERSo we would love to,

1:02:54SPEAKERI really wanna offer that as a service

1:02:56SPEAKER'cause I want, I think Mastodon is best

1:02:58SPEAKERwhen you have a community of like-minded people

1:02:59SPEAKERon your server with you.

1:03:00SPEAKERAnd I think the group here would be good for that.

1:03:03SPEAKERBut if people are interested in it, please let us know.

1:03:05SPEAKERWe'll kind of prioritize figuring that out.

1:03:08SPEAKERBut yeah, thanks everybody for listening.

1:03:10SPEAKERWe'll be back next week with another episode of the TechPod.

1:03:13SPEAKERSee y'all then.
