00:00SPEAKERhey everybody will here Brad is unfortunately feeling under the weather
00:03SPEAKERthis week and we weren't able to record a new episode for you all but what we
00:08SPEAKERhave done is pulled deep from the patron episode archive to get patron episode 19
00:14SPEAKERwhich was recorded last year just before Halloween it was posted on the 30th of
00:18SPEAKEROctober and we will be running that for everybody this week so enjoy this is
00:23SPEAKERpatron episode 19 don't pull the frenulum we do a few QA's we talk about
00:28SPEAKERnightmarish self-closing doors look there's a little bit of body it's all
00:32SPEAKERthe stuff you want on Halloween you got a little bit of body horror you'll be
00:35SPEAKERcandy talk I it's it's a it's a real journey for all of us so I hope you
00:42SPEAKERenjoy and we'll do patron thank yous at the end of the patron up see you in a
00:47SPEAKERbit I get real anxious when you don't have the beeper thing up at the
00:57SPEAKERmicrophone and there's only like three seconds left I know that there's plenty
01:00SPEAKERof time look I'm the fastest draw on the west okay but I just I just feel like I
01:04SPEAKERfeel like it's like the door is going down really slowly and like you're
01:08SPEAKERsliding down and your hand is still under it and like God that scene and
01:12SPEAKERhere I am here I am talking about Titanic again but there's that scene in
01:16SPEAKERTitanic where all the one once once the collision has happened and the boiler
01:20SPEAKERrooms are all being flooded and I guess they had what were for the time pretty
01:23SPEAKERnew electrical doors yeah like watertight doors that would seal as
01:28SPEAKERthose compartments flooded and there's that scene of the guy doing exactly what
01:32SPEAKERyou're talking about and his leg gets through about a microsecond before it
01:36SPEAKERwould have just been a lopped off and I listen to the historian commentary track
01:41SPEAKERooh they have they have like the James Cameron commentary track the actors one
01:46SPEAKERyou know what I mean yeah the producers blah blah blah but they have the one
01:48SPEAKERheyday of commentary yes yes but came out on DVD yes but there there is one of
01:53SPEAKERthe commentary tracks is the two historians who were the historians on
01:56SPEAKERthe production ooh and one of them flat-out says yes people lost limbs to
02:01SPEAKERthese kinds of doors on a frequent basis well look if every disclaimer every
02:07SPEAKERwarning label on a consumer product in the 21st century it represents a loss of
02:12SPEAKERlife limb or personal injury lawsuit like think about think about that that
02:18SPEAKERyou know that mechanism that keeps the elevator door from chopping your arm off
02:21SPEAKERoh no oh no think think it look that didn't get there that wasn't developed
02:26SPEAKERthat wasn't developed out of the goodness of people's hearts that was
02:30SPEAKERdeveloped as a straight response to capitalism I mean now I need to go watch
02:34SPEAKERTotal Recall again I mean look I'm just waiting for the Resident Evil laser
02:39SPEAKERgrids to come out because then that's what that's the real bad tech with the
02:43SPEAKERway look it is it is too early both in the morning and in this podcast for such
02:48SPEAKERgrim material although granted it's damn near Halloween but it's technology it is
02:53SPEAKERthank you okay sure yes yeah fine elevator doorstoppers that's technology
02:59SPEAKERthis is what people are paying for just grizzly depictions of okay so when I was
03:06SPEAKERa kid and we only had the town that we lived in had maybe three elevators that
03:10SPEAKERwere accessible to normal humans right like there were a couple in the mall
03:14SPEAKERokay not a lot of two-story buildings that's okay you know what that's fair
03:17SPEAKERnow that you mentioned it and when I think back on my upbringing yeah you're
03:21SPEAKERright a lot of a lot of one-story structures yeah like the mall was two
03:25SPEAKERstories and there were a couple elevators through three four elevators
03:28SPEAKERspread throughout there so that people could get up and down if they couldn't
03:31SPEAKERuse the stairs of the escalator but for the most part like elevators were an
03:36SPEAKERunusual occurrence and the one in Belk's that was glass was a very exciting
03:40SPEAKERmoment like when you go in the Belk's glass elevator it was it was very cool
03:45SPEAKERbut I distinctly remember my mom telling me as I as the door was closing we were
03:50SPEAKERcloser I was like gonna jam my arm into the gap to stop the elevator door and
03:54SPEAKERopening cuz I thought that that mechanism was really cool she was like
03:57SPEAKERdon't ever stick your arm into an elevator like that she knew but that's
04:02SPEAKERthe New York thing right like that's like a New York New York some young
04:07SPEAKERgo-getter in New York trying to get the last spot in the elevator just jams
04:10SPEAKERtheir arm in let's talk about something else
04:16SPEAKERFriday morning let's talk about something besides losing limbs okay the
04:25SPEAKERinscription talk for the end of the show that's right any spoilers right we were
04:28SPEAKERjust talking about inscription before this book speaking of losing things boy
04:32SPEAKERwe rolled in here with a plan and I have completely forgotten all of it I think
04:36SPEAKERI think what we have we had an excess of cues we definitely have a lot of cues
04:40SPEAKERI'm sitting here looking at him right now there's a bunch of good ones there's
04:43SPEAKERsome good ones yeah here's a good one okay we'll just do some cue okay what
04:47SPEAKERare we doing here we're doing good we're going to do some cues let's do some cues
04:49SPEAKERmake them into A's hang on hang on I gotta open up my embouchure I gotta like
04:53SPEAKERoh yeah you did your vocal cords massage the vocal the vocal folds did you get
04:59SPEAKERdid you get there how's it like did let okay so Brad you've been doing both
05:03SPEAKERvoice therapies when I'm getting here started the started my voice therapy yeah
05:06SPEAKERis it helping I think so I had my second one and he was like he was like okay you
05:12SPEAKERneed to make sure you keep doing this every day even when it seems like it's
05:16SPEAKERnot doing anything for a while like it took about two or three weeks for me to
05:20SPEAKERokay like really feel anything he'd excuse me see I'm not supposed to do
05:24SPEAKERthat was supposed to clear my throat that was like number one do not clear
05:27SPEAKERyour throat like swallow fine do anything drink water anything you can do
05:31SPEAKERto not clear throat but yeah but also he was very upfront about yes these
05:35SPEAKERexercises are ridiculous and it might seem like they are not doing anything
05:39SPEAKERfor a while when I did this a few years ago the thing that struck me a is that I
05:44SPEAKERimmediately learned on the first session which was in person that I really don't
05:48SPEAKERlike having strangers touch my neck interesting I didn't like and it's not
05:54SPEAKERjust touching your neck it's like they're they're finding the gap between
05:57SPEAKERyour larynx and your trachea and then like massaging the muscles that I didn't
06:02SPEAKERknow existed there so that's interesting because mine are all over zoom for
06:06SPEAKERobvious reasons and at first I was like man am I getting shortchanged am I not
06:09SPEAKERgetting the full therapeutic benefit here by not going in and seeing the
06:13SPEAKERperson but now that you put it that way maybe it's best it's look the lady who
06:17SPEAKERdid the voice therapy with me the the therapist was awesome she was very nice
06:21SPEAKERshe was very kind she had she was very like accommodating and gentle but like
06:26SPEAKERthe at the end of that by the end of that first session I was like she was
06:30SPEAKERlike hey are you okay because I looked like I was about to have a panic attack
06:32SPEAKERbecause literally like do you have a stranger grabbing your larynx yeah like
06:37SPEAKERhaving somebody wrap their hand around but at least part of your throat is
06:40SPEAKERmaybe a little bit of a panic inducing thing and like as as she said like the
06:44SPEAKERreal downside of these acts some of these exercises if you push in the wrong
06:47SPEAKERplace then you can like cut off blood supply to your brain make yourself pass
06:50SPEAKERout and stuff like that you know be careful be careful out there yeah so but
06:56SPEAKERit took a while for it to work I've been keeping up with the the the neck Euler
07:00SPEAKERmuscle most of the neck Euler yeah at the word for things in the neck but the
07:03SPEAKERmuscle massaging is easy to keep up with yeah I've been doing the blowing bubbles
07:09SPEAKERthrough a straw thing pretty regularly I know you didn't get that one I didn't
07:12SPEAKERget that one I got the interesting under chin like that's your chin I have not
07:17SPEAKERbeen doing a great job keeping up with the tongue stretches like the tongue
07:24SPEAKERstretches hey like I don't want to see that much of my tongue I had to do it in
07:30SPEAKERfront of the mirror to do it right for a while so here's the best part because
07:33SPEAKERI'm doing it over zoom and they can't like help me do it properly in person
07:37SPEAKERyeah I'm getting to see a lot of my speech pathologists tongue oh that's
07:42SPEAKERgreat he's demonstrating for me over and over so I'm getting to see like the full
07:48SPEAKERuvula experience there was a lot of demonstrating even when you were in
07:53SPEAKERperson and you know what if I was rating things that I'm uncomfortable with like
07:59SPEAKERhaving having gone through the whole fertility gamut before our daughter was
08:02SPEAKERborn let's see on a scale of 1 to 10 the testicular inspection in front of a room
08:11SPEAKERof medical students hmm that's number one on the discomfort list wow the
08:16SPEAKERtesticular ultrasound number two on the discomfort list that one was like you're
08:22SPEAKERin the fun room where you get to see the baby for the first time on the
08:25SPEAKERultrasound except for it's just you and a person that ultrasound technician in
08:30SPEAKERthere who's like just jamming your your your your boys with the ultrasound wand
08:35SPEAKERthat was bad having the throat touched right like constantly and regularly over
08:41SPEAKERan hour-long session that's number three it's right up there and then
08:45SPEAKERsurprisingly when she was like yanking my tongue out of my mouth that was less
08:48SPEAKERbad I was okay with that one man it's it's tricky it's technical you gotta make
08:52SPEAKERsure you gotta get you want the stretch to feel you want to feel the stretch in
08:55SPEAKERthe back of the tongue you don't want to pull the frenulum yeah don't pull the
08:58SPEAKERfront it's like well so my problems cut never been what yeah I this is a thing
09:06SPEAKERthat they did if you had trouble I like I don't remember why it was done it was
09:14SPEAKERdone when I was a baby before maybe through nursing or eating or something I
09:18SPEAKERcan't remember okay so you have no memory of it happening no memory of that
09:20SPEAKERokay I don't have a frenulum and then the little the little I mean it's still
09:25SPEAKERthere I guess but it just does it doesn't do anything the other one that I
09:28SPEAKERdon't have is I had to have gum surgery when I was young so you know the little
09:32SPEAKERpiece of skin that holds the bottom of your lip to your gums I have two of
09:36SPEAKERthose because it was cut and then they grew back separately instead of together
09:40SPEAKERwhat man mmm mouth-to-mouth stuff is gross that's the TLDR I started at least
09:46SPEAKERat least a heels fast I started to say like having the frenulum cut and kind of
09:50SPEAKERsounds liberating actually that's just like extra tongue flexibility you'd
09:53SPEAKERthink but it doesn't really there's not really any I like I can't stick my tongue
09:57SPEAKERout further I can't roll my tongue I can't do anything cool I'm trying so
10:01SPEAKERhard not to clear my throat right now what do I do have a sip of water I I can't
10:05SPEAKERnot do it sorry I'm knocking on you Brad I'm turning you in man did you have the
10:12SPEAKERchance to opt out of the group of medical students observing your
10:17SPEAKERexamination I can imagine that there might be some pressure there to be cool
10:21SPEAKERand not opt out of it so my general policy at the doctor is that if the box
10:27SPEAKERexcite go to UCSF doctors fairly regularly my main GP is a UCSF doctor so
10:34SPEAKERlike he refers me to UCSF people and their students at the UCF they like just
10:38SPEAKERpart of the deal you get really good doctors but often their students of
10:41SPEAKERcourse my general policy is I always just check the box without thinking about
10:46SPEAKERit and when I went to the fertility clinic to the urologist I didn't really
10:51SPEAKERconsider the full implications of that and like I saw the the attending the
10:57SPEAKERfirst who was like the who was like a not a not a intern but a you know after
11:05SPEAKERbefore you're a real full doctor all the way doc after your doctor but before
11:08SPEAKERyou're like done with your training when you're doing specialist training you're
11:12SPEAKERa sort of resident resident yes I saw the resident or maybe even a post like
11:18SPEAKERput like a person doing their like post residency and she was awesome and she
11:23SPEAKERwas like okay this all looks good blah blah blah blah I she's like I'm gonna go
11:27SPEAKERget I'm gonna go get the doctor and have him take a look too I was like okay
11:30SPEAKERthat's fine and the doctor comes in and like up until this point everything's
11:36SPEAKERperfectly normal like gloves the whole thing
11:40SPEAKERI don't know if you've ever been to the urologist but like there's a there's a
11:43SPEAKERlike you're usually standing okay and then the doctors are low either on a
11:48SPEAKERchair or like a knee knee thing or something so they're like at eye level
11:52SPEAKERwith the business yes and I can't believe it I don't think I don't I don't
11:57SPEAKERthink I've ever told this story before publicly also so this is that you're
12:00SPEAKERwelcome patrons so I'm standing there he comes in the first time I've met the guy
12:06SPEAKERhe's like hey do you mind if some students come in and it's a little room
12:11SPEAKERthere's like a mirror on the room I'm like ice or he's do you mind if some
12:14SPEAKERstudents observe and I was like oh there's a mirror under the room it's
12:16SPEAKERprobably like to a glass one way glasses let's go into like another room they'll
12:19SPEAKERlook through the fuck no it's like it's like a seven foot wide observation like
12:24SPEAKERroom that's wide enough for a bed and a stool and a couple of chair a chair and
12:29SPEAKERlike some cabinets and it seemed like a fucking clown car worth of like what
12:34SPEAKERappeared to be like preteen mostly women walk in boy so they're like they're like
12:40SPEAKERthey're all like 22 years old or 23 years old or something and I'm standing
12:44SPEAKERthere with my pants about to take my pants off again the doctor is like and
12:49SPEAKERI'm like oh wow this is a I'm thinking this is a lot right so he's like okay
12:55SPEAKERdrop your pants and I pull my pants down and he doesn't put fucking gloves on
12:59SPEAKERwhat right that sounds like malpractice to me look look what the fuck I mean
13:07SPEAKERit's all sealed there's no fluid transfer I know but still also like a
13:13SPEAKERlittle bit of the impersonality of the gloves might have been nice there it's
13:16SPEAKERso easy to put gloves on anyway man that was that was just like crap Gina was in
13:25SPEAKERthe lobby waiting for me there cuz we you know we would done it like the full
13:28SPEAKERround that day and she got done first and she came back and she's like oh how
13:32SPEAKERwas it like dude you have like like I know that women's doctor like women's
13:38SPEAKERdoctor stuff is often awful and impersonal and and and like like I get
13:43SPEAKERit but Jiminy Christmas 20 people when I'm when I'm like 20 people inspecting
13:48SPEAKERthe junk and the doctor me like it take a look at this this is like at least she
13:54SPEAKERdidn't like get ready to feel anything so that was that was that was good she
13:58SPEAKERwas she was very confused why her husband was oozing out of the elevator
14:02SPEAKERin the form of a puddle I think I think about it before I check the box now is
14:06SPEAKERthe big TLDR that I could see that was it really like 20 people cheese it look
14:10SPEAKERit was probably like seven but it felt like I'm you know what I mean it's like
14:13SPEAKERone of those things where you're like oh my brain doesn't know what to do with
14:17SPEAKERthis this is bad there's a billion ways I could make this much worse so I'm just
14:20SPEAKERgonna not say anything and try not to think about this too much and then we'll
14:23SPEAKERbe done I just I keep picturing like the like toward the end of some like very
14:28SPEAKERmacabre kind of game like inside or something like yeah you're in this
14:32SPEAKERsterile medical environment and all of a sudden would just out of nowhere right
14:36SPEAKERafter you drop your pants but they flourish the doctor waves his arm and
14:39SPEAKERthe curtain drops look and there are two dozen two dozen 20-somethings staring at
14:46SPEAKERyou so so like I had to go I had to go to a different specialist once and they
14:51SPEAKERhad like the observation room so it was like it was like a little it was like a
14:55SPEAKERpolice lineup room or something right so there's like a big glass one-way mirror
14:59SPEAKERon one wall and the students went in the other room that was fine like like
15:04SPEAKERhonestly if you're not if the room had been slightly larger like the if the if
15:10SPEAKERthe observer if the if the you know the room where they where the doctor saw me
15:14SPEAKERwould have been like not nine feet by 12 feet or something would have been a
15:18SPEAKERlittle bit it would have been okay if the students had been in there already
15:23SPEAKERwhen I came in that might have been okay I like it wasn't like I don't feel
15:29SPEAKERviolated or anything it wasn't bad it was just unexpected and profoundly weird
15:32SPEAKERyeah I think the only tactic there for me is you just have to tell yourself I
15:37SPEAKERwill never see any of these people again yeah except it's not the biggest city so
15:42SPEAKERyou might well and also the the weirdest thing about the whole deal was that I
15:47SPEAKERfelt like I was at least 20 years older than all of them maybe combined I feel
15:53SPEAKERlike that would make it better cuz like at that point like who are you trying to
15:56SPEAKERimpress right like you have no social connection to these people and never
16:00SPEAKERwill it's like you're never gonna see them at a party like I worked I worked
16:04SPEAKERyou know I I almost what I was on track to go to med school I don't know if you
16:09SPEAKERknow this oh but yeah like I was gonna go to med what's this what the fuck is
16:13SPEAKERthis we're supposed to answer questions anyway questions yeah but I like I like
16:18SPEAKERgot to my junior year in high school was supposed to shadow a doctor for the
16:20SPEAKERsummer and I did that and I was like oh this is fucking terrible I don't want to
16:23SPEAKERdo this and I suddenly found myself with this biochemistry degree not knowing
16:27SPEAKERwhat I wanted to do with my life at age 24 or 23 and that's when I started
16:35SPEAKERwriting for ours yeah and they're like all these all these seminary students
16:38SPEAKERare writing about computers I guess I get in on that yeah there you go alright
16:43SPEAKERsome cues of days yeah okay let me see here I had a good one and I scrolled
16:48SPEAKERright past it oh no where did it go where did it go you know what courtesy
16:57SPEAKERof ENT there's a good question at the very end of this thing so I'm so scroll
17:00SPEAKERall the way down okay it's kind of a long one alongside the recent DNS
17:08SPEAKERoutages across several companies and networks there's been a lot of the old
17:12SPEAKERcliche about okay I'm not sure if he like if there's an autocorrect thing
17:16SPEAKERhere I'm not quite clear on the meaning of this phrase but there's been a lot of
17:20SPEAKERthe old cliche about software ending a miracle and held together with string I
17:24SPEAKERthink it's needing a miracle needing a miracle ship yeah okay okay that being
17:29SPEAKERheld together with or software being a miracle and helping a miracle that was
17:32SPEAKERwhat I thought yeah I think that might be an autocorrect anyway this this is
17:35SPEAKERthanks thanks Android thanks algorithms the meaning is clear yeah I can tell you
17:42SPEAKERthat there is rock-solid software in the world that doesn't fall apart it's just
17:45SPEAKERboring and there's no news in stuff not falling apart the downside is that it's
17:50SPEAKERexpensive takes ages to develop and often looks fugly how many features
17:54SPEAKERwould you give up to have a rock-solid service if the internet still looked like
17:58SPEAKER1999 but never fell over would you take it oh I mean this feels like a loaded
18:06SPEAKERquestion because even without the like perfect stability he's proposing I would
18:11SPEAKERstill take the internet of 1999 again if I could because that would that would
18:15SPEAKERdelete let's say 15 years of social ruination those come about through the
18:21SPEAKERcurrent yeah like I feel like ours technically did a really good thing a
18:26SPEAKERcouple years ago about how NASA writes software specifically in terms of like
18:32SPEAKERthe the I the space shuttle control software and you know they like like the
18:39SPEAKERstuff that can't fail right and then also like to the point that that it and
18:46SPEAKERalso just to be clear there's stuff like this in airplanes and power grid and
18:50SPEAKERwater systems and control systems for all this other stuff but like the NASA
18:55SPEAKERstuff was especially interesting because like it had to be relatively fast and
18:59SPEAKERredundant and failover instantly and not fail so they had like multiple
19:04SPEAKERcontractors write the same software they ran the software on redundant computers
19:09SPEAKERthey had one computer that was a different computer than all the other
19:11SPEAKERcomputers and all of those are constantly checking against each other
19:15SPEAKERand if the vote like if three if multiples disagree with each other then
19:20SPEAKERthen they they had failover procedures for that situation too oh that's cool so
19:26SPEAKERlike it's it's um we should we should that would be a good guest episode is to
19:31SPEAKERget the person who wrote that article maybe in and track them down it might
19:35SPEAKERhave been Eric or Kyle or something I love to talk about that I mean you know
19:39SPEAKERlike NASA over time has had a decent amount of you know catastrophic failure
19:45SPEAKERand loss of life but you never hear about it being due to software it's
19:48SPEAKERalways mechanical generally well it's um we talked about this of the Facebook
19:52SPEAKERthing but it's about the the no blame the no blame postmortems right like like
19:58SPEAKERwhen the Facebook thing happened it didn't happen because if somebody
20:02SPEAKERpressed the wrong button it happened because there was a failure in the
20:05SPEAKERinfrastructure and institutional failure in the institution yeah well yes yes and
20:10SPEAKERno but I mean like with the Challenger disaster I mean somebody pushed to go
20:13SPEAKERahead with that launch even though the other conditions were risky right well
20:16SPEAKERthat that's it but that's a failure in this decision there were people there
20:18SPEAKERwas like there was a Morton Thiokol engineer who literally went to his grave
20:22SPEAKERknowing that he could have stopped that and and tried to stop it and they didn't
20:26SPEAKERlisten to him right so so that at that point that becomes an institutional
20:30SPEAKERfailure because they had engineers saying hey this is not a safe to go sure
20:33SPEAKERand at some point along the chain that message didn't get passed upward listen
20:37SPEAKERto yeah yeah that makes sense that that methodology sounds fascinating the kind
20:41SPEAKERof massive massive multiple redundancy kind of thing like I've I wish I had a
20:46SPEAKERbetter source for this but I have read similar things about the way the
20:49SPEAKERManhattan Project was run okay yeah they had multiple teams running independently
20:53SPEAKERright so yes but in that case it was because they were just trying to get it
20:56SPEAKERdone as fast as possible right because there were concerns about other factions
20:59SPEAKERworking on the same research yeah but the thing I've read is that you know
21:03SPEAKERthis was like barely explored science at that point right like in fact I want to
21:08SPEAKERsay like I think fission big fission itself was only discovered in the late
21:13SPEAKER30s fission was replicated in the lab in the late 30s we knew it could happen but
21:17SPEAKERnot like in our reaction yes kind of like that whole sequence of events was
21:22SPEAKERonly demonstrated like four or five years before they finished the bomb but
21:26SPEAKERalso this is a cherry topic but specifically what I've read is that
21:31SPEAKERbecause they were solving all this stuff as they went every time they hit a
21:35SPEAKERproblem where it seemed like there could be more than one solution they forked
21:39SPEAKERthe project and tried all solutions simultaneously yeah and that is why we
21:45SPEAKERended up with two like fairly different bomb designs that happened
21:48SPEAKERsimultaneously right like both worked yeah like like fat man and a little boy
21:52SPEAKERare different types of bombs and it's because there were multiple valid routes
21:57SPEAKERto this to this conclusion well they're different mechanisms the bomb effect is
22:01SPEAKERstill yeah the nuclear mechanism for the bomb working is still the same but it's
22:05SPEAKERlike the mechanism for making that happening is different sadly the end
22:09SPEAKERresult is definitely still the same but yes I mean yeah that's what I mean the
22:11SPEAKERaction inside yeah the way it's carried out is different well I would I would
22:15SPEAKERthat setting aside the very grim nature of nuclear weapons like just from a
22:22SPEAKERmethodological standpoint that's that kind of stuff is fascinating to me well
22:26SPEAKERwe've had our friend Phil Broughton also known as fine radium labs also known as
22:30SPEAKERthe black blood of the earth guy yeah on the list to have on the shows yes we
22:35SPEAKERliterally were booking him when the pandemic started and we stopped being
22:37SPEAKERable to record in person so as soon as we can get back and record in the same
22:41SPEAKERspace at some point we'll we'll get Phil on to talk about that because he's he is
22:45SPEAKERa radiation safety person and has all of the good hey I fucked up and now I'm
22:53SPEAKERirradiated stories some of them are very grim some of them are very funny and
22:57SPEAKERsome of them are grim and funny simultaneously wait are these all
23:01SPEAKERsituations with him being irradiated or or other people no no they're they're
23:04SPEAKERlike the way one of the ways you you learn from history when you do that job
23:10SPEAKERit seems like a lot rather than learning in practice because practice has some
23:13SPEAKERreal cost have you ever heard of the demon core yeah was that was was the
23:19SPEAKERdemon core the one with the screwdriver incident or screwdriver one was
23:22SPEAKERdifferent that was this that was one of the that was a pile the demon core is
23:32SPEAKERthe one where they where the guy the screwdriver slipped out and it smacked
23:35SPEAKERtogether and went critical yes and blasted everybody in the room like I
23:38SPEAKERthink everyone that was in that room died well eventually let me see okay so
23:43SPEAKERI've got here the pile was when they dropped to the radioactive material into
23:48SPEAKERthe into the pile of radioactive shit and that went bad okay unsurprisingly I'll
23:52SPEAKERput it this way on the on the demon core Wikipedia page there are sections
23:56SPEAKERentitled first incident and second incident yeah look those can tell us all
24:01SPEAKERsorts of stories there's a reason nothing was called the demon core I
24:03SPEAKERsuppose do you know about the this the third Manhattan project team that wasn't
24:10SPEAKERgiven classified information no so they they they paid a group of scientists who
24:17SPEAKERdidn't have access to any any private information to see how long it would
24:21SPEAKERtake them to build and after knowing that an atom bomb existed how long it
24:25SPEAKERwould take them to develop the process for making an atom bomb work from first
24:29SPEAKERprinciples rather than having the classified information that they
24:32SPEAKERdeveloped during the course of the Manhattan project it took like three
24:34SPEAKERyears really in the 50s 40s late 40s early 50s faster oh were they were they
24:38SPEAKERjust trying to gauge how fast other countries could really get there yeah
24:42SPEAKERexactly and that's when all the non-proliferation stuff so that's when
24:46SPEAKERthat movement started hey we should stop or else every country's gonna have these
24:51SPEAKERand eventually one of them will you know it delayed the the problem that we had
24:56SPEAKERwhen the Soviet Union broke up by 30 years years yeah I've read I think the
25:02SPEAKERSoviet Union only got the bomb when they did because of smuggled secrets I
25:07SPEAKERbelieve is what I've understood I listen to a hardcore history about nuclear
25:12SPEAKERweapons and about specifically about a lot of the scientists who very quickly
25:18SPEAKERturned on the idea later and later in life and how little like how like
25:22SPEAKERtragically little traction they got with politicians and trying to trying to
25:26SPEAKERsuppress or dampen that stuff well you know to fight the Reds Brad was it
25:31SPEAKEROppenheimer spent the rest of his life atoning for his crime he was he was the
25:35SPEAKERone who really took the hard turn I mean look he the Exploratorium exists as part
25:40SPEAKERof his his hey I've got to make the world better for the thing that I've
25:43SPEAKERdone plan they're really getting higher was one of the initial founders of the
25:48SPEAKERof the Exploratorium I did not know that yeah that's crazy
25:52SPEAKERmeanwhile von Braun was a fucking former Nazi you know look yes the Russians
26:02SPEAKERdidn't get that like we picked the former Nazis we want wanted I look I
26:06SPEAKERcan't even I can't even make a joke about that it's fucking bad anyway okay
26:10SPEAKERsorry I mean you know it is the Halloween patron episode mm-hmm whoa
26:16SPEAKERnuclear annihilation it's it's scary we on the Simpsons rewatch with the kiddo
26:24SPEAKERthe treehouse of horror ones she's skittish about horror because of some
26:27SPEAKERbad experiences and roblox mm-hmm but she is the treehouse of horrors have
26:33SPEAKERbecome a favorite we got to the oh yeah got to the we got to the monkey's paw oh
26:36SPEAKERare you they were we started the beginning this is the second time on a
26:40SPEAKERpodcast this week I've talked about treehouse of horror but so that's
26:43SPEAKERinteresting because on on the ramble cast on next later this week we were
26:47SPEAKERtalking about how those early ones all harken back to or parody like really
26:52SPEAKERawesome classic horror you know it's like it's all like Twilight Zone
26:56SPEAKERepisodes and The Shining and the Raven Hitchcock and and Edgar Allen Poe yeah
27:03SPEAKERall that stuff like classics of the genre right and then like George Romero
27:07SPEAKERand yes exactly and then the recent ones are like they're parodying like Toy
27:11SPEAKERStory and tick-tock and like it's just I think you've kind of lost the plot here
27:16SPEAKERa little bit I mean look so I haven't regularly watched Simpsons in a long
27:21SPEAKERtime I I'll be interested to see how long the interest in watching Simpsons
27:26SPEAKERlasts in the house with my guess is yeah like if we get to the tenth season I'll
27:31SPEAKERbe kind of impressed we usually watch like an episode or two a night well so
27:34SPEAKERactually I started to say like on the one hand it's interesting to hear that
27:37SPEAKERshe is interested in those treehouse of horrors that reference stuff that came
27:40SPEAKERout like you know half a century before she was even born or more than that it
27:44SPEAKERlike she really liked the Raven for what it's worth well so that's the thing
27:47SPEAKERthough as I say that it makes me think back to like you know that's how I
27:51SPEAKERlearned about a lot of old stuff was reading the giant stack of mad magazines
27:55SPEAKERfrom the 70s that my cousin had yep and it's like that's the only reason I knew
28:00SPEAKERwhat Watergate was as an eight-year-old was that I was reading old issues of mad
28:05SPEAKERthat parodied it you know my favorite 30 rock joke is when Liz Lemon is trying to
28:11SPEAKERimpress Jack Donaghy you know Jack Donaghy's girlfriend and flight of the
28:16SPEAKERValkyries comes on I think she's like oh you like Wagner and she's like oh no I'm
28:20SPEAKERactually a big Looney Tunes fan that's pretty good so true did we even answer
28:27SPEAKERIan's actual question yeah I would take that would we take 1999 internet that
28:33SPEAKERsounds great the one thing I would really have a hard time giving up there
28:36SPEAKERis that the home networking gear that I love so much these days didn't really
28:41SPEAKERexist then like I love the internet of that era the way communities were
28:46SPEAKERarranged and what the general like etiquette and politeness of the internet
28:50SPEAKERwere and like how kind of again less socially harmful it was but like that
28:56SPEAKERwas before routers basically you know like no I had a router in 1999 I'm sure
29:00SPEAKERthree calm yeah yeah really I plugged my ISDN modem into that router and I got
29:06SPEAKERfour I got one Ethernet port out and I had a hub in the in the closet 100% I
29:11SPEAKERran 10 based tea in my house in 1998 wait was it a router or switch come on
29:17SPEAKERBrad it was a router connected to a switch sir okay so you had a firewall I
29:22SPEAKERhad a no I had multiple IP addresses because we did not have it was it was
29:28SPEAKERall it was routing to publicly all of the addresses inside the network were
29:32SPEAKERpublic facing hmm so it was still a router but it was not there was no
29:36SPEAKERnetwork address translation that is the part that was missing I say the the
29:41SPEAKERthing to the thing the other thing that we always have to say when we talk about
29:45SPEAKERthis is that in 1999 the internet was a place for rich white people mostly church
29:52SPEAKERlike you know yeah at least middle-class you know yeah I mean yet if you had a
29:59SPEAKERcomputer in like 1998 97 you were pretty well off I think yes you had a fair
30:04SPEAKERamount of disposable that's true but I'm thinking back I was just reading about
30:07SPEAKERthis the other day that remember things like AOL and prodigy ended up becoming
30:11SPEAKERISPs so that's true that stuff had been democratized to a certain degree yeah I
30:18SPEAKERmean in AOL you'd get a disk with infinite free minutes or whatever every
30:21SPEAKERnight right like there were definitely there were ways to get internet access
30:24SPEAKEReven at that point that we're not super burdensome anyway did you ever play
30:30SPEAKERmagic bread no either I'll skip that question then not an ironically not a
30:35SPEAKERcard guy hmm I like Dominion and the games that kind of spun off of magic
30:40SPEAKERthat make it more accessible and not about collecting cards but never played
30:45SPEAKERmagic I could see that um goodness gracious can we do this double j
30:50SPEAKERquestion you might have to oh there it is I want to hear about your favorite
30:55SPEAKERboard games oh I see that was I'm not I'd I hate to be a big dole blood wet
30:59SPEAKERblanket I'm just not a big board game I'm a big board game person person Gina
31:04SPEAKERand I play board games once or twice a week usually what do you got right now
31:09SPEAKERtwo-player games we're playing a lot of Azul I mean it's a multi it's more than
31:12SPEAKERtwo players but it's great with two players that's that's a drive it's gonna
31:15SPEAKERsay like I I don't even think of board games as a two-player thing I always
31:19SPEAKERthink of them as like oh we need a lease to if not for more people to come over
31:23SPEAKERto actually make this good no no okay okay Brad I know what I'm getting you
31:27SPEAKERfor Christmas first okay um the the the one of the things that the Germans have
31:33SPEAKERdone well is board games and one of the things that the the the profusion of
31:39SPEAKERGerman your style euro board games it has created a whole sub-genre of games
31:46SPEAKERthat are awesome for two players including some that are like two players
31:48SPEAKERonly so like there's a game called seven wonders it's a fabulous intro German
31:54SPEAKERboard game there's a game called seven wonders duel that takes the kind of core
31:58SPEAKERmechanical loop of seven wonders and makes it makes it work with two players
32:02SPEAKERit's it is one of my absolute favorites Azul is like a tile placement game so
32:07SPEAKERyou're making patterns basically on this board and the scoring is math math it's
32:13SPEAKERvery mathy it's it's like and it is a great two-player game we just started
32:20SPEAKERplaying Jaipur which is another like designed for two players game that's
32:25SPEAKERawesome really fun and let's see the last thing that was recommended by Nick
32:30SPEAKERSuttner and Doug Wilson on Twitter the other day that we just got and have
32:34SPEAKERplayed like twice is called lost cities and it's a it's it's it almost the thing
32:41SPEAKERthat's neat about it is if you like playing like bidding card games like
32:44SPEAKERspades or bridge or hearts or something like that where you kind of have to say
32:48SPEAKERokay I'm gonna get this many tricks and your partner has to play off of that and
32:51SPEAKERSam to get this many tricks it kind of takes that mechanic and puts it in a
32:55SPEAKERgame that you could that you play with two people in a way that's interesting
32:58SPEAKERso yeah those are those are my we also play a lot of splendor and machi coro
33:02SPEAKERcheese there's a lot of games look I'm gonna go and tell you we I have to put
33:07SPEAKERanother shelf in here for fucking board games because we have it becomes a
33:11SPEAKERproblem but but board games are great love board games okay sorry I'm in a
33:19SPEAKERdaze here there's so many questions there are a lot of you the other the
33:22SPEAKERother problem or the real reason I pause there is that I just came across a
33:24SPEAKERquestion that I really wish we had taken on the real episode this week because
33:27SPEAKERthey included a picture and I really wanted to use that picture as the
33:31SPEAKERepisode heart I mean we could record it here and then I could just cut it in
33:34SPEAKERseamlessly because I haven't edited the episode we could do that it's the one
33:38SPEAKERabout the robot named Marty
33:43SPEAKERWow do you see it yeah I see it it's BTM McNellis that picture is a little bit
33:48SPEAKERdystopian like it literally looks like something out of a dystopian future like
33:52SPEAKERminor Minority Report type movie let's just save it for next month okay all
33:59SPEAKERright well crap now we've teased it and now we're not gonna well we can do it
34:03SPEAKERhere people can hear it twice let's sit on it okay then and then promptly forget
34:08SPEAKERit next month if we don't if we don't do it next month send it again because yes
34:14SPEAKERokay how about Steve the you talk about the steam deck one briefly I talked
34:22SPEAKERabout that Jay Marshall do either of you plan on getting a steam deck also do you
34:26SPEAKERthink the deck form factor will catch on in the larger PC landscape I do not I
34:30SPEAKERhave I am NOT a portable video games person unless like absolutely necessary
34:36SPEAKERand I love laying in bed and playing a game I can't my hands always go numb
34:40SPEAKERlike I can't ever I don't know if it's because I use computers too much and I
34:43SPEAKERhave too much nerve damage but I can never find a position lying down holding
34:47SPEAKERsomething like a switch where my hands don't just start tingling after five or
34:51SPEAKERten minutes do you have the grips for the switch no you got to get the grips
34:54SPEAKERman mmm they're like 15 bucks the grips make holding the switch possible I'm
35:01SPEAKERinterested in this like I could hold a Wii U controller indefinitely because it
35:04SPEAKERhad those little grippy things on the bottom the nugget the edges yeah there's
35:09SPEAKERa $15 I mean there's a whole bunch of them now at the time I got our switch we
35:13SPEAKERgot a $15 thing that just kind of clips on to the back and you take it off when
35:17SPEAKERyou put it in the in the in the slot and it has like it's just a little grabby
35:23SPEAKERthings like little little little I don't know they're round and they're curvy and
35:28SPEAKERyou can grip on to them pretty easily the dangle off the back of the switch
35:32SPEAKERand and and I can hold it indefinitely with that thing on having to hold the
35:36SPEAKERthin thing was really uncomfortable I ordered a steam deck partly because my
35:42SPEAKERdaughter plays a fair number of PC games and I would like to not have to have a
35:46SPEAKERfull PC setup for her to play that stuff sure and partly because I like to lay in
35:52SPEAKERbed and play games so yeah I don't know I mean I'm interested I hope it does
35:58SPEAKERwell for him I mean I mean it's like I suspect it will be huge you know like
36:03SPEAKERthe the pre-order situation just like was off to the races instantly yeah and
36:07SPEAKERlike pee up and you know unlike me most people do seem to like portable stuff
36:12SPEAKERwell you know like it is a very popular thing like that like laying around in
36:17SPEAKERyour house playing on a portable thing apparently is gigantic well but also
36:21SPEAKERlike the idea of being able to like if I was if I was doing a train commute still
36:24SPEAKERand be able to play Hades or something on my train commute that sounds freakin
36:27SPEAKERawesome yes like I distinctly wonder if the steam deck is gonna bite into
36:32SPEAKERNintendo's whole thing kind of significantly yeah I feel I feel like a
36:37SPEAKERlot of my switch use over the last year was playing indie games that I already
36:40SPEAKERhad on steam like like the when when Hades and Spelunky added save state
36:47SPEAKERsyncing across switch and steam that was a huge deal for me yeah for sure I just
36:53SPEAKERgod I just realized that on like no later than day two of the steam deck
36:57SPEAKERbeing available people are gonna get Yuzu and Ryujinx the switch emulator is
37:01SPEAKERrunning on that thing yeah and if that thing runs switch games better than the
37:05SPEAKERswitch yeah GG Nintendo well so then the other thing about it is if you have good
37:13SPEAKERWi-Fi and a gaming PC in your house being able to stream across the Wi-Fi to
37:18SPEAKERthe to the to the steam link yeah steam deck yeah is complete like I use steam
37:24SPEAKERLee I've steam links on all the PCs or the app depending on the box and I we do
37:29SPEAKERthat a lot let's let's get like we play ultimate chicken horse even in the
37:33SPEAKERliving room on the steam link all the time great you know what I think is the
37:37SPEAKERcoolest feature of the steam deck because I could of course I do is the
37:40SPEAKERidea on stuff no no the idea that you can install any OS you want on it and at
37:44SPEAKERthat point it actually like you could almost see a world where it's like a
37:48SPEAKERportable work device and not a gaming device because like they didn't they
37:52SPEAKERdemonstrated this months ago that like you can straight-up plug it running any
37:57SPEAKEROS and see like mouse keyboard and monitor right yeah like you could put
38:00SPEAKERWindows 10 on that thing and just use it as a mobile it's much smaller than a
38:04SPEAKERlaptop right like it's like a relatively powerful PC that is smaller than a
38:08SPEAKERlaptop and you could kind of use it as a mobile work machine it's like a weird
38:11SPEAKERneat shaped laptop yeah I mean the thing about it is it's not anything super new
38:17SPEAKERbecause there's a ton of like they're they're literally a ton of those yes
38:23SPEAKERtypes of form factors out of China yes all the time totally but like having
38:27SPEAKERhaving somebody who's like I think at this point it's safe to say that valve
38:32SPEAKERis pretty good at like the index has been pretty good they've had some
38:36SPEAKERproblems with controllers and stuff off and on but they've been pretty good
38:39SPEAKERabout supporting them and even though nobody bought the steam controllers or
38:42SPEAKERsteam links those both have been like the steam link has been really reliable
38:46SPEAKERlike I have like I said two or three of them and they've all been where they've
38:49SPEAKERbeen working for years for me and are pretty good so we have I have a related
38:53SPEAKERquestion here yes another cue that follows on from this it comes in from
38:58SPEAKERlet's see me oh hi Brad it turns out so I have a steam link in the closet I have
39:05SPEAKERnever used it I bought it for ten bucks when they were clearing them out mm-hmm
39:08SPEAKERbut I basically don't have room for it in the living room I don't have enough
39:13SPEAKERI'm out of HDMI ports I'm kind of out of shell space yeah are there other ways to
39:17SPEAKERreplicate the steam link functionality with the devices that I do have hooked
39:21SPEAKERup that I don't need to drag the steam link out for so I don't know if there's
39:26SPEAKERlike a UWP app for Xbox for steam link but like there's an Apple TV app that
39:31SPEAKERI've used that works quite well like official one official one valve Wow yeah
39:36SPEAKERyou can also install moonlight on the Apple TV I believe moonlight is the open
39:42SPEAKERsource client for the Nvidia game stream thing we talked about this a few months
39:44SPEAKERago or a year ago I guess now but yeah I I use the Apple TV one in the living
39:50SPEAKERroom fairly regularly and it seems fine kind of makes me wish we had a Apple TV
39:54SPEAKERwe have a Roku the Roku I I'm I'm I'm it's not like an urgent thing but I'm
40:00SPEAKERgetting rid of we have an old Roku like the third gen one which is like the the
40:04SPEAKERoldest viable Roku okay and the moment that thing goes away I'm switching I
40:08SPEAKERthink to an Apple TV just because all the rest of the options are real added
40:12SPEAKERup now like even like the TV interfaces are real addy if you buy in yes like if
40:17SPEAKERyou buy a new Samsung TV even if you buy the expensive as one it has ads in the
40:21SPEAKERmenu and that just is offensive the amount of ads and also data harvesting
40:25SPEAKERthat modern TVs and set top boxes do is gross yeah so my my intent is to just
40:31SPEAKERbuy a TV and then never hook it up to the network I think good reason good
40:35SPEAKERreason good reason to run a pie hole yeah turns out piles great if you if you
40:40SPEAKERwant to see a bunch of empty ad units instead of ad units with ads in them
40:45SPEAKERwe've got all like we've got I think may have come out with another model since
40:49SPEAKERthen but I think we have the newest Roku it's just the one of the 4k ultra models
40:54SPEAKERyeah but I don't think the steam link and steam link like situation on the
41:01SPEAKERRoku is very robust from what I've seen I'm also surprised that there's not like
41:07SPEAKERa bigger like root your Roku and install whatever you want on their kind of
41:12SPEAKERsituation they collect Roku collects a lot of data I'm probably pretty anti
41:17SPEAKERthat I know but I figured somebody would have busted that thing open by now the
41:23SPEAKERsteam link stuff is on Android TV and the shield TV and stuff like that okay
41:28SPEAKERyou can also do a Raspberry Pi it's let's see it's on LG TVs I think okay
41:33SPEAKERSamsung TVs maybe Sony TVs sounds it sounds like we've just chosen poorly in
41:37SPEAKERterms of the devices that I have in there I have let's see series X ps5 a
41:44SPEAKERRoku a Wii U ooh and a PlayStation 3 in there I I gotta say I don't think any of
41:54SPEAKERthose Roku the other day and was like I mean at the Wii U the other day I was
41:59SPEAKERlike I don't think it was touched the Wii U in like six months at least it
42:03SPEAKERhasn't even plugged in for a year now well well like the kiddo used to play
42:10SPEAKERSuper Mario World fairly regularly but then we like completely beat it and get
42:16SPEAKERthe 96 stars yeah it's like we've finished the secret levels and the whole
42:21SPEAKERthing and I think she's probably done at this point the last thing I saw is a
42:27SPEAKERthread from last September on the Roku channel it says hey we would like steam
42:31SPEAKERlink and moonlight please yeah and then nobody said anything great that would be
42:35SPEAKERgreat but oh well yeah see do you want to do any more questions or you want to
42:41SPEAKERtalk about let's talk about inscription episode planning or inscription can we
42:46SPEAKERtalk about inscription Brad inscription it's pretty good I I I like a slay the
42:53SPEAKERspire like I like a deck building card like Brad you realize that these deck
42:57SPEAKERbuilding card games are basically taking German style board game mechanics and
43:00SPEAKERapplying them to a video game right oh I get it but it's on a screen so I'm
43:04SPEAKERinstantly you know okay okay I'm way more interested um although I think the
43:10SPEAKERcard game is cool and it gets cooler the more you play it in inscription but
43:13SPEAKERthat's really not the thing that makes inscription what it is the thing about
43:18SPEAKERit though is the card game is real good but it is you're right yeah like where
43:21SPEAKERyou play it the better it gets in those were that I played a lot of those where
43:24SPEAKERthe card game is is kind of good or okay and like you I just lose steam on them
43:29SPEAKERafter a while if I don't have to think about the card game a little bit okay
43:33SPEAKERwe should talk about this in a non-spoilery way and then warn people if
43:37SPEAKERthey were gonna do spoilers I guess yeah this is really hard to talk about
43:40SPEAKERbecause I don't even know how far you are and like the further you get into
43:44SPEAKERthat game the more there is to spoil like it's definitely a game that hides a
43:48SPEAKERlot of secrets yeah and the secrets are good like I accidentally spoiled myself
43:53SPEAKERby looking at the twitch category page one day okay for inscription so like
43:59SPEAKERdon't do that I guess I'm tempted and I haven't quite finished it I'm tempted to
44:04SPEAKERask what you saw but okay so I played the game and it looks like a PlayStation
44:12SPEAKERera kind of like like it's like 90 degree turns into 3d yeah energy
44:19SPEAKERcurrently polygons yeah and I I beat three bosses and then some stuff
44:24SPEAKERhappened mm-hmm and then some other stuff happened and now I'm fighting more
44:31SPEAKERbosses there seems like that's where I left off last night in a different place
44:36SPEAKERyeah that looks different place so what's different I wouldn't I don't know
44:41SPEAKERabout that but I mean oh yeah I do know about that but I'm trying to be vague so
44:45SPEAKERas to not you know I see yes things do look different I see okay okay but okay
44:51SPEAKERthe core the core thing that you start with is the card game in this cabin and
44:55SPEAKERit's like part escape room part deck building like slay the spire like and
45:00SPEAKERthe like the soundscape I thought it was a spooky game for Halloween movie
45:06SPEAKERspooky game for Halloween which it is kind of yeah but it's also more than
45:10SPEAKERthat there's there's something about that first part of the game that I have
45:13SPEAKERtried to define in my head and I haven't really come up with a good way to
45:16SPEAKERdescribe it like it's some weird layered like meta skew morphism like yeah here's
45:26SPEAKERhere's like it reminds me of a lot of 90s games well so here's what I'm trying
45:33SPEAKERto get at and this is hard to articulate but okay so the in-game motif is that
45:37SPEAKERyou are sitting at a table there is a physical table that you sit down at and
45:41SPEAKERplay this card game against another character right the game starts with
45:44SPEAKERwith a person loading up a computer well that that's definitely that's that's
45:49SPEAKERthat's the part we might not want to get into too much if we don't spoil okay so
45:54SPEAKERhere's but within the context of this like wouldn't this log cabin you're in
45:58SPEAKERyeah playing this card game against this character the character like the in-game
46:04SPEAKERmotif is never that there is anything going on there except there is a person
46:07SPEAKERon the other end of the table playing this card game against you right it's
46:10SPEAKERlike you have a DM it's like he's a DM playing right you kind of right but the
46:14SPEAKERthing that it does is that it creates this insane level of atmosphere because
46:20SPEAKERhe keeps dragging things onto the table like into the into the frame including
46:25SPEAKERlike putting masks on himself changing his patterns of speech like it's like a
46:32SPEAKERDM would if you were playing a tabletop campaign right so so maybe the best way
46:36SPEAKERto describe it is it's like it's like if it's like if your DM had a bag of
46:39SPEAKERholding next to them and they could pull any prop in the universe out of it and
46:44SPEAKERslap it onto the table like faster than a human should be able to move like like
46:48SPEAKERit creates us even though like in-game the motif is never that you're like away
46:52SPEAKERfrom a table you're always at a table but he's always dragging like branches
46:56SPEAKERor skulls or like you know the air fills with like embers like despite despite
47:03SPEAKERnever being out of this log cabin like the amount of atmosphere that they
47:06SPEAKERcreate and like the sense of transportive like you're in another place
47:09SPEAKERkind of thing is like is mind-blowing it's it's really hard to describe well
47:13SPEAKERand then there's also this escape room layer to that room too where you're in
47:18SPEAKERthis room and there's a bunch of weird props around and you have to kind of
47:21SPEAKERfigure out what to do with them and how to combine that different ways and like
47:23SPEAKERthere's some puzzles to solve and there's some mysteries to unravel and
47:27SPEAKERlike there's a lot going on there it is a yeah like like maybe maybe another
47:32SPEAKERexample what I'm talking about is like one of the you know it's rug like and
47:34SPEAKERlike each node on the board can be a bunch of different random encounters and
47:37SPEAKERthere's the one where there are some survivors around a fire mm-hmm and you
47:42SPEAKERcan like warm one of your cards by the fire to upgrade it yeah but the wording
47:47SPEAKERis always like like you know the survivors beckon you to warm your card
47:51SPEAKERby the fire but you notice one of them can't stop drooling it's like all the
47:55SPEAKERall the side characters have agency even though they don't like one of the things
48:00SPEAKERthat happens is the cards talk to you yes right like like the cards will come
48:05SPEAKERup and be like man that was a terrible move or totally or hey use me for this
48:09SPEAKERone I want this please make me good right so it's like the thing with those
48:13SPEAKERsurvivors for example is they're just wood carvings they are tiny little wood
48:16SPEAKERcarved figurines that's all they are but because of the way they dress the set
48:20SPEAKERfor every encounter in that thing and the way that's written and all that
48:23SPEAKERstuff like there's so much menace in that encounter even though these are
48:27SPEAKERjust little wood figurines like it feels it feels like so much more than the
48:32SPEAKERpresentation actually is a lot of that is the soundscape to like the the sound
48:36SPEAKEReffects and the music like the music is this is a it's very unique because it's
48:41SPEAKERlike this dissonant a harmonious kind of like your brain hears like oh yeah I've
48:48SPEAKERheard this before 90s 90s chiptune stuff like like PlayStation 1 or maybe Dream
48:53SPEAKERcast-air or something I don't know and then all of a sudden like it's just goes
48:57SPEAKERbuck wild and and your brain is just like oh god I'm terrified this is scary
49:02SPEAKERand I don't know why or you know like when you fight the you fight the
49:05SPEAKERprospector boss the percussion is the sound of a pickaxe hitting rocks you
49:09SPEAKERknow yeah like yeah it's just oh man it's just dripping with atmosphere is
49:13SPEAKERincredible the did you
49:20SPEAKERthere's a connection between the people around the fire and your character yes
49:25SPEAKERsir yeah huh huh not at the beginning necessarily but later on interesting
49:32SPEAKERthat's why I think I'm quite a bit further than you but I don't know what
49:35SPEAKERyou're talking about so I might have missed something anyway there's like
49:40SPEAKERyeah like eventually it starts peeling its layers back like you understand you
49:45SPEAKERcome to understand why the cards are talking to you and in fact who those
49:47SPEAKERcards are yeah and like there's there's like multiple there's like three layers
49:51SPEAKERof storytelling in that game it's the I think I'm in the second layer probably
49:55SPEAKERif I had to guess okay okay but I'm not sure which is the fun part about the
50:00SPEAKERlike it's it's been it's weird because it's a game that's kind of impossible
50:04SPEAKERlike a I usually don't care about spoilers because I think that plot is
50:08SPEAKERthe least interesting thing in a game but in this case like the like the the
50:13SPEAKERway the game unwraps is really compelling not only that but the sense
50:17SPEAKERof mystery before it unwraps when you see all this crazy stuff happens like
50:20SPEAKERwhy the fuck are these cards talking to me yeah like why is the stoat copping
50:24SPEAKERsuch an attitude I love the stoat man stowed the stowed and the stink bug are
50:28SPEAKERboth pretty you'll see where that stuff's going this well yeah I figured
50:32SPEAKERthat part I got okay okay like the stowed the stink bug in the in the in
50:36SPEAKERthe jacked up wolf yeah are all all all personal heroes of mine you see the okay
50:42SPEAKERyou just yeah I understand that part but like the the the the escape room part is
50:48SPEAKERsurprisingly compelling yeah from talking I streamed a lot of this the
50:51SPEAKERother over the last few days of streaming and from talking to chat
50:55SPEAKEReverybody has a different like the stuff that you unlock in the escape room part
50:59SPEAKERdirectly impacts the rest of the game in a way that like they were seeing stuff
51:05SPEAKERthat I they hadn't seen on their playthroughs like pretty significant
51:12SPEAKERchunks of game were unlocked as a result of my approach to some of those puzzles
51:16SPEAKERversus their approach to some of those puzzles something interesting there's
51:19SPEAKERalso a lot of body horror in this game just as a yes if you're squeamish mmm if
51:23SPEAKERyou if you if you're if you're nervous about mouth bones like a solid a fair
51:28SPEAKERamount of first-person self-harm yeah yeah so that's a that is the kindest
51:33SPEAKERpossible way to describe that anyway just you know be thoughtful it's a lot
51:39SPEAKERyeah I have I forgot to finish that game this weekend I saw my I'm gonna I want
51:45SPEAKERto bring it home it is maybe the best like it's probably like I can't it's
51:49SPEAKERamazing to me that hitman 3 came out this year but like it's it is high on
51:55SPEAKERthe list for me I saw on this year's games I saw Justin McElroy tweeted last
52:00SPEAKERnight I'm paraphrasing slightly here but he basically said I finished
52:04SPEAKERinscription today it is the best game of the year and like and depending on how
52:08SPEAKERit sticks the landing I might not disagree with him I I'm like it's good
52:15SPEAKERenough that makes me I didn't play the the developers earlier stuff yeah the
52:20SPEAKERthe same guy made pony island and the hex I never played the hex I did play
52:24SPEAKERsome pony island and my game was also pretty impressive in pretty similar ways
52:27SPEAKERyeah like there's a there's a weird I feel like maybe this is how people felt
52:32SPEAKERabout undertale that spent a lot of time playing JRPGs and yeah engaging with
52:37SPEAKERthose like I never was super like I played Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES and
52:40SPEAKERstuff like that but I was never like a JRPG guy necessarily yeah and this but I
52:45SPEAKERdid play a lot of like stone keep and those kind of like dungeon crawly
52:49SPEAKERadventure type games that were like RPG light basically sure and this is hitting
52:55SPEAKERit at least the first part of this hits a lot of those vibes for me yeah the
52:59SPEAKERtone is different like that I yeah I don't mean to be reductive about
53:02SPEAKERundertale but like my my kind of general impression of undertale is that the tone
53:07SPEAKERis like twee internet humor kind of thing a bit whereas the like the tone in
53:12SPEAKERthis one is much more like sinister and sardonic and kind of you
53:20SPEAKERknow the hob yes yeah yeah same same like style I guess I would say about
53:25SPEAKERdifferent tone in a way that clicks with me much more yeah I don't know I'm like
53:32SPEAKERI literally I decided to only play it on stream without really thinking about
53:36SPEAKERwhat I was saying and then didn't stream for five days or six days and was like I
53:39SPEAKERjust want to play more inscription I just want to play more inscription I
53:42SPEAKERdon't have time I want to play more inscription I want to play more
53:43SPEAKERinscription yes and then yeah I keep I keep I keep having to play other games
53:48SPEAKERfor job but if weren't for that I would have finished this already because it's
53:52SPEAKERreally something yeah like I would I hope that I can just keep playing the
53:57SPEAKERcard game at some point because I'm enjoying the card game like the steam
54:00SPEAKERthe steam reviews are like full of people going like please take the card
54:04SPEAKERgame from the first act of the game and just make it a whole game like I want
54:06SPEAKERmore of that and I get it and and like the characterizations and so yeah it's
54:13SPEAKERjust really good it's a it's an incredibly well like and it's like 20
54:16SPEAKERbucks yeah so you know it's yeah the writing is really it's just the sheer
54:20SPEAKERamount of creativity and it is just kind of kind of startling it's it's not often
54:25SPEAKERI play something that's this smart yes yes it is like this like this game has
54:31SPEAKERput Daniel Mullins on the map in a way that like it's like yeah it's like
54:37SPEAKERcareer-defining I think well I mean everybody has like I I'm sure you I
54:42SPEAKERmaybe you don't but I have like a list of studios that are like instant buys
54:46SPEAKERwhen the new game comes out like yeah when there's a new supergiant game I'm
54:49SPEAKERgonna be there cuz right like you know all their games are incredible
54:53SPEAKERpyre might not be my favorite thing but I still enjoy pyre and I'm willing to
54:56SPEAKERdie like I'll plunk down whatever they want from whatever their next thing is
55:00SPEAKERright yeah yeah yeah like this is the day he's on the he's on that list now as
55:07SPEAKERfar as for sure for sure I kind of I kind of want to back and finish pony
55:10SPEAKERisland now yeah I I'm gonna I'm gonna check out hex and pony island I think
55:14SPEAKERthe the motif of pony island if I remember I haven't played in like five
55:18SPEAKERyears but it's like it's like a black-and-white like old 80s arcade
55:22SPEAKERmachine okay except Satan has possessed the ROMs of the arcade machine perfect
55:28SPEAKERso like you're trying to play this old side scroller but the devil keeps
55:32SPEAKERinterfering or something like that that's my vague memory of it and like you
55:36SPEAKERand you start digging into like the service menu of the game and like trying
55:39SPEAKERto banish demons or something it's so it's like Super Mario Brothers 2 but the
55:44SPEAKERSun is hell basically yes it's so it's also very meta and layered yeah in the
55:50SPEAKERsame way like I like I like I like somebody who is thoughtful not just
55:55SPEAKERabout the game but about the world in which the game lives yes yes so you
56:00SPEAKERshould play inscription that's the TLDR here yeah might have to update the name
56:04SPEAKERof the game's channel we also for people who are curious we one of the things we
56:08SPEAKERadded for patrons is thread club has been kind of shepherding this but we
56:14SPEAKERhave threads for currently popular games that are in discussion in the discord so
56:22SPEAKERif you want to talk about things such as Metroid dreads ending which is very good
56:26SPEAKERdid you finish that yet by the way I did okay it's completely ridiculous yeah and
56:31SPEAKERinscription we have threads for that kind of stuff and if you want other
56:35SPEAKERthreads I'm sure you can just ask thread club and they'll hook you up yeah but
56:39SPEAKERit's it's been it's actually been really nice to have a place that I can go and
56:42SPEAKERtalk about inscription although like I look at this the chat for inscription
56:48SPEAKERright now is like I've been super busy at work so I haven't had time to finish
56:50SPEAKERit but I do keep thinking about it and then a paragraph of spoiler and then
56:54SPEAKERsomebody else is like oh spoiler spoiler it's like it looks like an FBI document
56:58SPEAKERit really does it's everything's redacted um so anyway I gotta finish it
57:03SPEAKERI can go back and read the threads yes that's that's the other reason I want to
57:05SPEAKERfinish it is I want to click on all the spoilers spoilers yeah that's right
57:09SPEAKERthat's right um I guess it's end of a patron episode yeah that'll do it hope
57:14SPEAKERwe didn't talk about too much video game I you know sometimes you just can't not
57:19SPEAKERwhen something special I don't get to talk I don't have a venue for talking
57:23SPEAKERabout video I know you get to talk about video game all the time I don't really
57:25SPEAKERhave a venue for video game talk anymore yeah that's fair I miss it but yeah this
57:30SPEAKERwas this was uh this was a patron episode all right sure was we'll be back
57:37SPEAKERnext week month with another one and then there should be an episode I think
57:39SPEAKERmaybe I'll post this on Saturday so we don't do double episodes on Monday oh
57:42SPEAKERwhat but this episode references the episode that will go up following day
57:46SPEAKERepisode ception man oh no hang on I what do you question no but I told I said I
57:55SPEAKERtold war bird that we might actually read one of his questions oh and then we
57:59SPEAKERdidn't you mean war rocky boo lock bird yes and I can't remember which one I was
58:03SPEAKERthere are 11 of them in here good God and most of them are unanswerable there's
58:13SPEAKERone listen I'm going to there's one there's one very straightforward one
58:19SPEAKERabout VR but uh oh I got it actually hang on I you know what no I mean here's
58:24SPEAKERhere's the one okay hit me what's your favorite kind of mustard French is
58:29SPEAKERyellow really I ate a lot of hot dogs bread I you know I was gonna say like
58:33SPEAKERliterally the perhaps one and only use for French is yellow mustard is on a hot
58:39SPEAKERdog I don't also put it on a hamburger I would put it on like oh it has to be a
58:43SPEAKERgrilled burger though if it's like a fancy burger I don't want to I don't
58:47SPEAKERwant a French's I want like a grape upon or interesting something on there my my
58:51SPEAKERburger stack growing up because we had a lot of cookouts yeah okay lay down the
58:56SPEAKERbottom of the bun yeah the French's yellow goes there yeah then the burger
59:00SPEAKERyeah then the cheese then tomato then lettuce tomato under lettuce yeah how
59:09SPEAKERdoes the tomato will slide off of the lettuce if it's on top I mean unless you
59:13SPEAKERjust really smash the burger that's that's part of the danger of the yeah
59:16SPEAKERthat's when that's what you got a yeah with great power comes great responsibility
59:19SPEAKERbrands right and then mayonnaise on the underside of the top bun and that is
59:23SPEAKERthat is my like totally vanilla standard I'm not getting crazy with bacon or
59:27SPEAKERjalapenos or anything but just the standard hamburger okay so my burger
59:31SPEAKERstack is bun if I'm doing ketchup and mustard I'll put ketchup and mustard but
59:37SPEAKERusually I'm a just mayonnaise only mayonnaise guy so do bun mayo if I have
59:43SPEAKERpickle slices like the like the long boys okay I'll put them down there on the
59:47SPEAKERbottom pickles good as a good crunchy base mm-hmm if I have if I have if I have
59:53SPEAKERcircle pickles instead of instead of like oblong pickles the circle pickles
59:57SPEAKERgo on the top okay the burger cheese lettuce tomato maybe if like it okay
1:00:08SPEAKERlook if I grill the onions they go on the very bottom mm-hmm okay if I if I'm
1:00:13SPEAKEReating raw like a like a two rings of raw onion that'll go above the tomato
1:00:17SPEAKERokay and then more mayonnaise onions raw onions was also red onion was also a big
1:00:23SPEAKERone back home oh we didn't know that you mentioned it who fancy we never have we
1:00:27SPEAKERwere always a yellow sweet Vidalia hmm there we have a lot of those - a lot of
1:00:31SPEAKERonions around the house I'd for whatever reason the last six months or so I have
1:00:35SPEAKERbeen like borderline obsessed with Grey Poupon oh which for some reason after
1:00:40SPEAKERnever really caring about it my whole life but I've been going through a lot
1:00:43SPEAKERof great Poupon so I like I like if I'm eating a corned beef sandwich Dijon like
1:00:47SPEAKERa great Poupon or even like a stone ground is always the jam sure I use a
1:00:52SPEAKERlot of date you know the secret the secret of a good vinaigrette is a little
1:00:56SPEAKERgreat Poupon ooh put a little Dijon in your vinaigrette oh yeah very good yeah
1:01:00SPEAKERvery good all right there you go - congratulations you finally got a
1:01:05SPEAKERquestion on to an episode we've we've broken the streak now at least it wasn't
