01:17SPEAKERI'm sure some subreddits are perfectly fine.
01:19SPEAKER- Yeah, like I think Twitch and Reddit

16:15SPEAKERlike there has to be a cottage industry
16:19SPEAKERof quarantine apps popping up at this point, right?
16:21SPEAKER- I mean, there's that campfire thing
16:23SPEAKERthat's like chat rooms with it's like a discord,
16:26SPEAKERbut all video.
16:28SPEAKER- Huh, interesting.
16:30SPEAKER- There's all of the meditation apps
16:32SPEAKERthat I've ever had on my phone sent me an email
16:34SPEAKERto let me know that they were free during the Rona,
16:36SPEAKERwhich was nice.
16:36SPEAKER- Oh, interesting, okay.
16:37SPEAKER- Yeah.
16:38SPEAKER- Well, crap, meditation app is one of the things
16:40SPEAKERI was gonna talk about here,
16:41SPEAKERbut maybe that's old hat at this point.
16:43SPEAKER- No, I like, if you have one you like, I'm into it.
16:45SPEAKEREvery, all of them I've ever tried,
16:47SPEAKERI found kind of like, I didn't,
16:49SPEAKERI was better off just sitting quietly by myself
16:51SPEAKERlistening to some like weird new age music or something.
16:55SPEAKER- Yeah, I could see that.
16:56SPEAKERI mean, I guess it depends on how different people
16:58SPEAKERwant to engage with that sort of thing.
17:02SPEAKERI'm gonna open up my iPad here real fast.
17:06SPEAKERI mean, the different categories to me
17:10SPEAKERare meditation is good, exercise is good,
17:16SPEAKERblue light is good.
17:19SPEAKER- Okay, blue light, really?
17:20SPEAKER- Blue light.
17:21SPEAKER- Like K-Mart?
17:23SPEAKER- Not that kind of, well, you know what?
17:25SPEAKERGetting a good deal does make you pretty happy, right?
17:27SPEAKER(laughing)
17:29SPEAKER- Yes.
17:29SPEAKER- You jump on the right blue light special,
17:31SPEAKERthen your day is made.
17:33SPEAKER- Man, one time I got a bag of Rolos for 69 cents.
17:35SPEAKERI was really excited.
17:36SPEAKER- That's incredible, man, it's a deal in a century.
17:40SPEAKERYeah, like I don't know a lot about the clinical aspect
17:44SPEAKERof this, but it was recommended to me by a professional.
17:47SPEAKERBut there are devices out there.
17:49SPEAKERI've got a Phillips one.
17:50SPEAKERI don't know who else might even make them.
17:51SPEAKERBut if you Google Phillips, you know,
17:53SPEAKERlike the, are they Scandinavian?
17:56SPEAKERThe light companies? - Phillips.
17:58SPEAKER- You know, everybody knows Phillips.
17:59SPEAKER- No, Phillips.
18:00SPEAKERThere was a Phillips factory near my house
18:02SPEAKERwhen I grew up in Tennessee.
18:04SPEAKER- I could have sworn they were founded in like...
18:06SPEAKER- I thought they were, maybe they're, huh.
18:08SPEAKER- I thought they were like Danish or Dutch or something.
18:11SPEAKERAm I totally?
18:13SPEAKERHang on.
18:14SPEAKER- This makes me want to do a podcast
18:14SPEAKERthat's just like delving into the corporate history
18:17SPEAKERof these major companies that we all know and have known.
18:20SPEAKER- Yeah, they're Dutch.
18:21SPEAKER- Wow, huh.
18:22SPEAKER- Yeah.
18:23SPEAKER- Who knew?
18:24SPEAKER- Yeah, founded, yeah.
18:25SPEAKER- Wouldn't choose tulips and light bulbs.
18:27SPEAKER- Guess so.
18:29SPEAKERTo be clear, so I guess they have a whole range
18:31SPEAKERof these things.
18:32SPEAKERI'm not actually sure which model I have,
18:34SPEAKERand it was a little more expensive than you would think
18:36SPEAKERfor what is probably just a very bright blue LED.
18:39SPEAKER- Okay.
18:40SPEAKER- They've got a whole range of these things,
18:42SPEAKERand to be clear, they are not hue related.
18:43SPEAKERThey're not part of the fill-to-hue line at all.
18:45SPEAKER- Okay. - This is completely 100%
18:47SPEAKERa different use case from that.
18:50SPEAKERThe one I've got is a little,
18:51SPEAKERlike it's got a little flip out like kickstand
18:53SPEAKERto sit up on your desk,
18:55SPEAKERand it's just a rechargeable, like massively,
18:57SPEAKERlike insanely bright blue light,
18:59SPEAKERlike the same general tone of blue you get
19:03SPEAKERfrom the sun or from the sky.
19:06SPEAKERAnd it's supposed to be like a mood enhancing thing,
19:09SPEAKERan energy providing sort of thing.
19:13SPEAKER- This is the thing that my former Scandinavian,
19:16SPEAKERmy Scandinavian coworkers had told me about,
19:19SPEAKERlike the satellite.
19:21SPEAKER- It is, yeah, like it wasn't labeled that way to me,
19:24SPEAKERbut I'm sure it is absolutely a seasonal effective kind of,
19:29SPEAKERnot cure, but you know, like a kind of treatment.
19:31SPEAKER- Treatment, yeah.
19:33SPEAKER- But God, what was I gonna say?
19:35SPEAKEROh, yeah, like when it was first,
19:37SPEAKERwhen the idea was first proposed to me,
19:39SPEAKERit's, you know, I kind of had a lingering suspicion
19:43SPEAKERof it being kind of woo-ish, you know, kind of,
19:48SPEAKERbut at the same time, like every device on the market
19:51SPEAKERpractically now an operating system has some sort
19:53SPEAKERof like nightlight night shift type feature, right?
19:55SPEAKERLike the, I think that the cognitive effects of blue
19:58SPEAKERand warmer light are pretty well understood
20:01SPEAKERat this point, right?
20:02SPEAKER- I was at Org Camp one year and was in the line
20:05SPEAKERto have dinner, I didn't know the people around me.
20:06SPEAKERI, and when I don't, when I'm in the line
20:08SPEAKERto have a meal there, I always introduce myself
20:10SPEAKER'cause the people there are fucking amazing usually.
20:13SPEAKERAnd the guy that was behind me that I ended up talking
20:15SPEAKERto all the way through the dinner line
20:18SPEAKERis the person who made Flux.
20:20SPEAKER- Oh, wow, oh, I was an avid Flux user until,
20:24SPEAKERI see, actually, maybe I'm misremembering.
20:27SPEAKERI feel like I remember there was a little bit
20:29SPEAKERof a bitterness that everybody just came in
20:32SPEAKERand replicated Flux.
20:33SPEAKERHe, like, he had the idea, he did it first
20:36SPEAKERand then every operating system on the planet
20:38SPEAKERjust kind of took the idea and ran with it.
20:40SPEAKER- As he said, he was pretty confident in his ability
20:43SPEAKERto maintain a product, 'cause this was around
20:46SPEAKERthe time Apple rolled it into OS X.
20:49SPEAKER- Okay.
20:50SPEAKER- And he was like, I'm pretty sure we can maintain
20:52SPEAKERa product on top of what they're doing,
20:54SPEAKERbut yeah, no, that's not, doesn't feel great.
20:57SPEAKER- Yeah, anyway, like, you know, it's,
21:00SPEAKERpeople understand how that stuff works, basically.
21:02SPEAKER- Yeah, but he, I mean, he was like,
21:04SPEAKERthere's real actual science behind this.
21:05SPEAKERIt isn't just, it's like, yeah.
21:08SPEAKER- And I mean, I can tell you from experience,
21:10SPEAKERthe cognitive effects of this thing are profound.
21:13SPEAKERThey're pronounced.
21:15SPEAKER- Okay, that sounds pretty good.
21:17SPEAKER- So it's like, the idea is basically it's supposed
21:19SPEAKERto make you feel more energetic, more upbeat, you know,
21:21SPEAKERit's supposed to just kind of lift your mood a bit,
21:24SPEAKERbut like the most obvious kind of like empirical example
21:28SPEAKERI can give is, I don't know if it's the intensity
21:31SPEAKERof the light or the specific temperature or both.
21:34SPEAKERFor one thing, I can only run it on the absolute lowest
21:36SPEAKERsetting any higher than that is like blinding.
21:39SPEAKER- When you turned it on, it made your webcam go like,
21:42SPEAKERlike a sixties cartoon where they inverted the colors
21:46SPEAKERor something, it was bonkers.
21:47SPEAKER- It is like, it's like the surface of the sun in here.
21:49SPEAKERIt's really bright thing on.
21:50SPEAKERBut what I was gonna say is you have to be pretty careful
21:54SPEAKERabout how long you use it, especially when you use it.
21:56SPEAKER- Okay.
21:57SPEAKER- When I first got it, I was like, oh, I was just,
21:59SPEAKERI just need to turn it on at some point during the day,
22:00SPEAKERright, like whenever.
22:02SPEAKERAlso for however long I want, right?
22:04SPEAKERSo like maybe the second day I had it,
22:07SPEAKERI turned it on for like 45 minutes
22:09SPEAKERat about seven 30, seven 30 at night,
22:13SPEAKERI was up to like two or three in the morning.
22:16SPEAKERLike it was like worse than any like pot of coffee
22:19SPEAKERI have ever chugged.
22:20SPEAKER- Well, that's unusual for you
22:21SPEAKER'cause you're usually in bed by like nine, nine 30.
22:23SPEAKER- We go to bed super early around here
22:25SPEAKERand like I could not sleep, man.
22:27SPEAKERMy mind was just racing.
22:28SPEAKERLike I could not believe how much that interfered
22:30SPEAKERwith my sleep pattern to use it that late so.
22:32SPEAKER- Have you ever used it during extra life?
22:35SPEAKER- No, I haven't done extra life since I've had it.
22:38SPEAKERI've only had it for a couple of years.
22:39SPEAKER- Okay.
22:40SPEAKER- And it's been a while since I did.
22:41SPEAKERWell, we've been doing extra life in the office
22:43SPEAKERfor the last two, three years.
22:44SPEAKERSo I haven't done like a 24 hour at home for a while,
22:46SPEAKERbut that would be like.
22:47SPEAKER- Guess what, Brad?
22:48SPEAKER- That is like, that almost feels like cheating
22:51SPEAKERat extra life if you just turn that thing on
22:53SPEAKERat like midnight one in the morning.
22:55SPEAKER- Yeah, like the three o'clock in the morning drag
22:58SPEAKERwhen you're there and you're like, ah, I'm so tired.
23:00SPEAKER- Yeah, so like it will absolutely keep you awake at night
23:03SPEAKERif you use it too late.
23:04SPEAKERAnd I even found I can't use it for more than like 10,
23:08SPEAKERmaybe 15 minutes max even in the mornings,
23:10SPEAKERbecause I actually feel myself starting to get jittery,
23:12SPEAKERlike over amped, kind of over anxious.
23:15SPEAKER- This is like when Superman's almost dead
23:19SPEAKERand like Wonder Woman carries him up above the cloud layer
23:21SPEAKERso that he sees the sun again and he comes back to life.
23:24SPEAKER- Right, it's kinda like it works.
23:25SPEAKERYou just have to be judicious with its use
23:28SPEAKERbecause it can get on top of you
23:31SPEAKERif you wanna go for too long.
23:32SPEAKER- It's funny you say this because like I definitely remember
23:35SPEAKERdoing October cast in the old whiskey basement
23:38SPEAKERand at like six o'clock in the morning
23:39SPEAKERwhen the sun would come up,
23:40SPEAKERI would take the headphones off
23:42SPEAKERand walk over to the front door and go out the front door
23:44SPEAKERand just stand and face the East for like five or 10 minutes
23:48SPEAKERand you'd like be good to go.
23:49SPEAKER- It works.
23:50SPEAKER- Yeah, it's amazing.
23:51SPEAKER- It definitely works, the brain is a strange thing.
23:53SPEAKER- We'll have to go outside today, that sounds nice.
23:55SPEAKER- Yeah, so I would think there have to be probably cheaper
23:59SPEAKERlike DIY solutions to this if you want.
24:03SPEAKERI'm sure you could Google some up, I haven't looked,
24:05SPEAKERbut the one I got, this Phillips,
24:08SPEAKERI'm not sure if it's part of the GoLite series,
24:11SPEAKERjust Google Phillips Blue Light,
24:12SPEAKERyou'll see a bunch of examples, but they're kinda pricey.
24:15SPEAKER- What's kinda pricey, like a hundred bucks?
24:17SPEAKER- I think this one was 80 or a hundred, something like that.
24:20SPEAKERSo it's like not nothing for what you're getting.
24:23SPEAKER- It's presumably a lot of very bright LEDs.
24:25SPEAKER- Yes, it is very much that, but it's rechargeable,
24:28SPEAKERit's very convenient.
24:30SPEAKERAnd I've had a pretty good experience with it,
24:32SPEAKERso there's that.
24:34SPEAKER- Cool.
24:36SPEAKER- Let's see.
24:36SPEAKER- What else you got, you got more tricks here?
24:38SPEAKERMore woo?
24:40SPEAKER- The, you mentioned meditation.
24:43SPEAKER- Yeah, I like meditation.
24:44SPEAKER- I do have one app that I, I'm with you,
24:47SPEAKERlike every app I have looked at,
24:51SPEAKERleft something to be desired one way or another.
24:53SPEAKERIf nothing else, they just seemed very expensive
24:56SPEAKERfor what you were getting.
24:57SPEAKER- Well, I mean, so the one that I liked was like $20
25:01SPEAKERa month or something, which was like,
25:03SPEAKERI could just pay for a real meditation class for that.
25:06SPEAKER- That's kind of insane.
25:08SPEAKERYou tell me, I don't know, that seems like a lot.
25:11SPEAKER- I didn't pay for it.
25:12SPEAKER- That wasn't Headspace by any chance, was it?
25:13SPEAKER- It was Headspace, yeah.
25:14SPEAKER- Headspace seems like the one that I see advertised
25:16SPEAKERthe most, which makes me assume it's the biggest.
25:18SPEAKER- Well, I mean, look, if they've figured out
25:21SPEAKERwhat their acquisition, user acquisition cost
25:24SPEAKERversus their revenue per user,
25:26SPEAKERthey know they're a beta versus there are poo,
25:29SPEAKERthen they can advertise, they can afford to advertise, right?
25:33SPEAKER- Yeah, I guess so.
25:36SPEAKER- I liked Headspace, the last time I used Headspace,
25:41SPEAKERI think I signed up for the free trial when I was going,
25:43SPEAKERwhen I had to drive to Portland for something.
25:45SPEAKERAnd I literally was on the way back,
25:47SPEAKERI was about to fall asleep in the car driving.
25:50SPEAKERAnd I pulled over to rest stop and put my headphones on
25:53SPEAKERand put Headspace on and tilted my driver's seat chair back
25:57SPEAKERand rested and then 15 people tapped on the window
26:00SPEAKERof the car wanting to know if I wanted to pay for sex.
26:02SPEAKERAnd that was not the most comfortable moment.
26:06SPEAKERBut then I meditated for like 20 minutes
26:09SPEAKERand was fine for the last four hours of the drive home
26:11SPEAKERor whatever.
26:12SPEAKER- Yeah, that's great.
26:13SPEAKERI'm sure it's a fine app.
26:15SPEAKERI doubt there's anything wrong with it.
26:17SPEAKERIt's just that it's kind of pricey.
26:19SPEAKER- I was just saying it is, at least last I saw it,
26:21SPEAKERmaybe over now, but they were giving a lot of time free
26:24SPEAKERduring this quarantine.
26:26SPEAKER- That's cool.
26:26SPEAKER- Which was nice.
26:27SPEAKER- That's good.
26:29SPEAKERThe one that I have found and stuck with,
26:31SPEAKERalthough I should to be clear,
26:32SPEAKERI'm terrible about sticking with meditation in general.
26:35SPEAKER- Yeah.
26:35SPEAKER- Every time I get into a good routine with it,
26:37SPEAKERit's like, man, why don't I do this all the time?
26:39SPEAKERThis is amazing.
26:39SPEAKERI feel so much better.
26:40SPEAKER- And then you take two days off.
26:41SPEAKER- And then I promptly make it three, four weeks
26:44SPEAKERand then stop again and it's terrible.
26:45SPEAKER- Yeah.
26:47SPEAKER- Taking care of yourself is a lot of work.
26:48SPEAKER- It's hard.
26:49SPEAKER- You have to exercise some discipline.
26:53SPEAKER- There's so many other interesting things to do instead
26:56SPEAKERis the thing.
26:57SPEAKER- Yeah.
26:58SPEAKER- Yeah.
27:00SPEAKER- I'm gonna pecking away at the console window on my NAS,
27:05SPEAKERprobably not helping my mental health.
27:08SPEAKERIt's probably the opposite.
27:09SPEAKER- I spent like an hour last night working on a case
27:13SPEAKERfor the Mr.
27:15SPEAKER- That sounds like a fun project.
27:16SPEAKER- That was, it is a fun project.
27:18SPEAKERAre you designing it yourself?
27:20SPEAKER- Yeah, so I don't think I'm gonna buy the USB board,
27:23SPEAKERI might, but I bought one of those $7 Maker Spot.
27:28SPEAKER- The Maker Spot one?
27:29SPEAKER- Or GG HUDs.
27:30SPEAKER- Yeah.
27:31SPEAKER- HUDs.
27:31SPEAKER- If you've got one of those, you're probably good.
27:32SPEAKER- Well, so the problem is four ports and I can't,
27:35SPEAKERI think I'm gonna, so I bought extender cables
27:38SPEAKERand I wanna make like a flat long,
27:41SPEAKERlike a eight inch by five inch,
27:43SPEAKERmaybe with some wooden, like opaque black acrylic box
27:50SPEAKERwith a USB on the front, four USB ports on the front.
27:54SPEAKER- Oh, that sounds great.
27:55SPEAKER- And then HDMI, ethernet and power on the back.
27:58SPEAKER- And then mount the boards to just the bottom of the case?
28:01SPEAKER- And mount the boards to the bottom of the case.
28:05SPEAKERAnd I have these, like you can get extenders with screws.
28:08SPEAKERSo I'll hold it up, but it's like a USB,
28:10SPEAKERlike you can get USB ports that have right there.
28:13SPEAKER- Oh, that's perfect.
28:14SPEAKER- So you just mount them up flush with the back
28:16SPEAKERand I'm just having to measure the holes
28:19SPEAKERand figure out where the holes go and all that stuff.
28:22SPEAKERAnd that kind of stuff is really satisfying for me,
28:24SPEAKERbut then if it takes too long,
28:26SPEAKERthen either I fall off of working on it,
28:27SPEAKERwhich is what usually happens,
28:29SPEAKERor like I get frustrated and move on to something else.
28:33SPEAKER- I'm sure like many people,
28:34SPEAKERyou have a graveyard of abandoned projects.
28:37SPEAKER- I mean, I usually come back,
28:38SPEAKERI'm usually pretty good about coming back to them.
28:40SPEAKERMy rule is if I don't spend money on stuff
28:42SPEAKERuntil I'm pretty sure I'm gonna finish it.
28:44SPEAKER- Okay, that's good.
28:46SPEAKER- 'Cause otherwise I would spend a fuckload of money
28:48SPEAKERon stuff that just ends up piled up in the garage
28:50SPEAKERand thrown out next time I clean the garage.
28:52SPEAKERBut yeah, so this one, I kind of got to a point last night
28:55SPEAKERwhere I was like, maybe I should just buy the USB board
28:58SPEAKER'cause it would be really nice to have Bluetooth,
29:02SPEAKERlike have four USB ports and Bluetooth,
29:05SPEAKERrather than just having three USB ports and Bluetooth.
29:08SPEAKER- What are you doing with USB ports?
29:11SPEAKER- Plugging in like the 8BitDo controllers
29:14SPEAKERor PS4 Dual Shocks or whatever.
29:17SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, four ports is like you could have,
29:19SPEAKERyou could have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and two controllers
29:21SPEAKERfeels like a good, I don't know,
29:23SPEAKERmaybe unless you're planning to do
29:24SPEAKERsome four player stuff at some point.
29:27SPEAKER- So I don't need Wi-Fi 'cause I have ethernet
29:29SPEAKERin all the places I would use this, I think.
29:33SPEAKER- Like I'm with you, like instinctually,
29:35SPEAKERI feel like I have four ports, no way.
29:38SPEAKERThat's nowhere near enough, but then when realistically,
29:39SPEAKERI'm trying to think like what I would plug into a MiSTer
29:42SPEAKERwith USB and I can't come up with much besides those four.
29:44SPEAKER- Like probably the most people I would have playing
29:47SPEAKERis three would be my guess.
29:48SPEAKERAnd I only have three like classic key controllers
29:51SPEAKERI have 'cause I have the Genesis 8BitDo one
29:54SPEAKERand then two of the SNES pads.
29:56SPEAKER- Yeah, also you could just daisy chain a hub
29:58SPEAKERinto the front of the case, right?
30:00SPEAKERIf you needed more controllers.
30:01SPEAKER- I could do that, that's a good point.
30:03SPEAKER- Yeah, and then I could run the hub up,
30:05SPEAKERlike put an extension on the hub and run the hub.
30:07SPEAKERThat's probably the solution is that,
30:09SPEAKER'cause then the hub can sit in front of the couch
30:11SPEAKERand we don't all have to sit on the floor
30:12SPEAKERif we wanna use wired controller.
30:13SPEAKERBut like I was testing Bluetooth yesterday
30:16SPEAKERand I don't know that I really need any,
30:20SPEAKERI mean, I definitely need a USB port
30:22SPEAKERin case something jacks up, the Bluetooth gets jacked up.
30:25SPEAKERBut like, and I need to actually plug something in
30:28SPEAKERlike a keyboard or a mouse or a game pad
30:30SPEAKERto control the scripts and stuff.
30:32SPEAKERBut yeah, anyway, I do projects usually
30:36SPEAKERand it's with mixed results, I guess.
30:41SPEAKER- So I guess you're not getting out of the house much.
30:43SPEAKERDo you have a heat sink for your mystery yet?
30:45SPEAKERI've still got that one, it was gonna,
30:46SPEAKERoh, you already got one?
30:46SPEAKER- Yeah, I got one.
30:48SPEAKERWell, it came, my Portuguese RAM came.
30:50SPEAKERSo did I tell you, did we talk about this last week?
30:53SPEAKER- I saw you on Discord talking about it.
30:56SPEAKER- So I sent the guy a note about,
30:59SPEAKERyeah, I sent the guy a note two weeks ago,
31:00SPEAKERRicardo, who was awesome.
31:01SPEAKERHe was like, super helpful.
31:03SPEAKERHe was like, well, I can go ahead and send another one out.
31:06SPEAKERAnd then if the first one shows up, you can just like,
31:09SPEAKERnext time I get a customer near you,
31:10SPEAKERI'll get you to put it in the mail to him, right?
31:12SPEAKERWhich I was like, that's very cool.
31:13SPEAKER- That's a nice way to move it forward, sure.
31:17SPEAKER- I thought so.
31:19SPEAKERAnd I was like, you know what, rather than do that,
31:21SPEAKERlet's just, if it doesn't show up this week,
31:23SPEAKERlet's cancel it and I'll just buy it
31:26SPEAKERfrom someplace in the US 'cause everybody's in stock now.
31:28SPEAKERHe's like, okay, that sounds good too.
31:30SPEAKERSo I wait until the end of the week and I'm like, fuck,
31:36SPEAKERit's not here yet.
31:38SPEAKERI order from Mr. Add-Ons, which is in New York someplace.
31:43SPEAKER- Maryland, I think, isn't it?
31:43SPEAKER- Memory board, hmm?
31:45SPEAKER- Mr. Add-Ons?
31:46SPEAKER- Yeah, there are some place. - I think they're in Maryland.
31:47SPEAKERMaryland, I think.
31:48SPEAKER- Okay, anyway, yeah.
31:49SPEAKERSo Maryland, I get the order in,
31:54SPEAKERI get the shipment notification the next morning.
31:56SPEAKERAnd about 45 minutes after I get the shipment notification,
31:59SPEAKERRicardo is like, hey, your tracking number has popped up
32:01SPEAKERand is working now.
32:02SPEAKERSo it's probably gonna be there in a couple of days.
32:04SPEAKERAnd I was like, oh shit.
32:05SPEAKERAnd literally one came on Monday
32:07SPEAKERand the other one came on Tuesday.
32:09SPEAKERSo wow, who's the asshole here?
32:11SPEAKER- Oh boy.
32:12SPEAKERYeah, you just said, well, you got spare RAM now.
32:14SPEAKER- Like when that N64 core comes online,
32:17SPEAKERyou need two sticks of RAM, I'm good to go, baby.
32:19SPEAKER- Yeah, I haven't seen an update on that in a while,
32:22SPEAKERbut the talk has been that there's a possibility
32:23SPEAKERthat very well may be the case.
32:26SPEAKER- PSX core looking pretty good these days.
32:28SPEAKER- Yeah, it's coming along.
32:29SPEAKERSo maybe hang on to that RAM.
32:32SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't know.
32:33SPEAKER- You've got blue RAM and red RAM.
32:34SPEAKER- I do, if somebody needs RAM
32:36SPEAKERand they live in the Bay area, let me know
32:38SPEAKERand we can make a deal.
32:40SPEAKER- Cut a deal.
32:40SPEAKER- Yeah, I know somebody.
32:42SPEAKER- Yeah, anyway, all that said,
32:46SPEAKERInsight Timer is the name of the meditation app that I use.
32:49SPEAKER- Oh.
32:50SPEAKER- It's kind of a weird name for an app about meditation
32:52SPEAKER'cause it doesn't say anything.
32:53SPEAKERIt doesn't sound like meditation at all, right?
32:55SPEAKER- Do you get insights from it?
32:57SPEAKER- I guess.
32:58SPEAKERSo it's almost like a meditation marketplace.
33:02SPEAKERLike Headspace is a guy, right?
33:04SPEAKERIsn't it one dude?
33:06SPEAKER- It's unclear to me.
33:07SPEAKER- Maybe there are other teachers now,
33:09SPEAKERbut I feel like a couple of years ago
33:11SPEAKERwhen I looked at it, it was just the one guy.
33:13SPEAKER- Yeah, I think Headspace is funded.
33:17SPEAKERI think there's a team of people working on the app,
33:19SPEAKERbut yeah, I only heard the one person.
33:21SPEAKER- I'm guiding the meditations, I mean.
33:23SPEAKERYeah, that's what I meant.
33:24SPEAKERI'm sure there are people that work on the app, but.
33:26SPEAKER- I think it's venture funded.
33:27SPEAKERIt's a pretty big thing.
33:28SPEAKER- Right, right, right.
33:29SPEAKERBut it's just the one guy providing the lessons or whatever.
33:31SPEAKERThis, as far as I can tell,
33:33SPEAKERlike any teacher can get on this thing.
33:35SPEAKERLike it's, oh, when you open the app,
33:37SPEAKERit is just a full-on like storefront
33:39SPEAKERof people selling their meditation exercises.
33:43SPEAKER- That's cool.
33:45SPEAKER- But it's a full-on like self-contained
33:46SPEAKERlittle social networky thing, you know,
33:48SPEAKERwhere you can follow different teachers.
33:49SPEAKERYou can like like different episodes or not episodes
33:51SPEAKERor lessons or whatever you wanna call them.
33:54SPEAKERIt does have a pretty robust like timer
33:56SPEAKERand tracker kind of thing built into it,
33:58SPEAKERwhere it'll track like to the second,
33:59SPEAKERlike how long you've meditated.
34:01SPEAKER- How does it know that I wasn't cheating?
34:02SPEAKER- Per day, per week.
34:05SPEAKERLike I said, it's a lot of work to take care of yourself.
34:07SPEAKERYou have to hold yourself accountable.
34:09SPEAKER(laughing)
34:10SPEAKERYou wanna cheat this thing.
34:12SPEAKERLook, you're only cheating yourself, man.
34:14SPEAKER- Look, if I can't cheat myself, who can I cheat?
34:16SPEAKER- That's fair, that's fair with a beard like that.
34:20SPEAKER- Yeah, I need to get it braided once
34:22SPEAKERbefore we move on from this.
34:25SPEAKER- But I've, also a lot of it is free.
34:28SPEAKERLike it's free to download and there are free lessons,
34:30SPEAKERso you can get a good feel for how it works
34:32SPEAKERbefore you start putting money into it.
34:35SPEAKERI think they say it's like a 50/50 split,
34:38SPEAKERrevenue split with the creators, teachers.
34:41SPEAKERSo I don't know how that compares to the industry standard.
34:46SPEAKERI guess that's better than a lot,
34:47SPEAKERnow that I think about it.
34:48SPEAKER- 50/50 is really good, I would think.
34:49SPEAKER- That's not bad, right?
34:50SPEAKERLike at first I was like, man, that sounds low
34:52SPEAKERfor the people providing the content.
34:54SPEAKERBut on the other hand, it's like 30/70 for most, right?
34:56SPEAKER- It's worse than something like Patreon,
34:58SPEAKERwhich basically just charges credit card fees
35:00SPEAKERplus a small processing fee, or Crowd Tilt or one of those.
35:04SPEAKERIt's more than almost anybody else that has it.
35:06SPEAKERLike your YouTube split, your Twitch split, your--
35:11SPEAKER- App Store, like software, Steam, anything.
35:12SPEAKER- Yeah, most stuff is 70/30.
35:15SPEAKER- Right, so--
35:17SPEAKER- Not in favor of the, sorry, 30% to the platform and 70%.
35:22SPEAKERMaybe it isn't as good then.
35:23SPEAKER- Oh wait, no, you're right, you're right.
35:24SPEAKERI had that backwards.
35:24SPEAKER- Yeah.
35:25SPEAKER- It is 70% to the creator, right?
35:27SPEAKER- Usually, it depends.
35:28SPEAKER- Okay, so maybe 50/50 is not so great.
35:31SPEAKER- Yeah, no, now that we talk about this,
35:33SPEAKERI'm glad we had a conversation.
35:34SPEAKER- This is what happens when we record at 7.30 in the morning.
35:40SPEAKERAnyway, like I said, it's free to download.
35:42SPEAKERYou can check it out.
35:43SPEAKERBut there's just a really wide range of people
35:45SPEAKERoffering a very wide range of different styles,
35:49SPEAKERI guess I would say, you know?
35:50SPEAKERLike there's kind of religious tinged stuff.
35:54SPEAKERThere's like more standard self-affirmation type stuff,
35:58SPEAKERyou know, a lot of like body scan,
36:00SPEAKERlike physical type, you know what I mean?
36:02SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:03SPEAKER- I don't know how much you know about
36:04SPEAKERthe practice of meditation, but--
36:05SPEAKER- So I mostly do like the clear your mind of all thoughts.
36:09SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, it's just the full on focus on your breathing,
36:14SPEAKERclear your mind.
36:14SPEAKERI don't know what the, we're not exactly like
36:18SPEAKERcognitive scientists around here or anything,
36:20SPEAKERbut like what the term is
36:22SPEAKERfor just kind of excising conscious thought.
36:29SPEAKERLike, I'm having a hard time getting,
36:32SPEAKERI don't have like, I don't know,
36:33SPEAKERI lack the language to get this point across
36:35SPEAKERor to articulate what I'm trying to talk about here.
36:37SPEAKER- Yeah.
36:38SPEAKER- But I see it talked about also with like playing music
36:41SPEAKERor painting or things that require like a singular--
36:45SPEAKER- What do you add to that flow state?
36:47SPEAKER- Flow state, flow art kind of,
36:49SPEAKERI guess that's the most common jargon
36:51SPEAKERI've seen around this concept.
36:52SPEAKERBut like, yeah, things where you're like
36:55SPEAKERfocusing in mentally on a practice,
36:57SPEAKERon a repetitive motion or action or creative process.
37:02SPEAKER- It's also--
37:03SPEAKER- Like the anxious, the like voice in your head
37:06SPEAKERkind of constant treadmill sort of just like peels off.
37:10SPEAKER- Honestly, yeah, I mean, it's about finding something,
37:14SPEAKERfinding a way to devote 100% of your attention to something.
37:16SPEAKER- Right.
37:17SPEAKER- Is the flow state idea.
37:18SPEAKER- Yeah.
37:19SPEAKER- I mean, we talked about it a lot when Tetris Effect
37:21SPEAKERwas new 'cause the whole point of that game
37:22SPEAKERis Ms. is trying to induce flow state in people.
37:25SPEAKER- Yes.
37:26SPEAKER- But it's funny, we talk about it on Still Entitled a lot
37:31SPEAKERin terms of like the shop jam shop.
37:35SPEAKERLike if you're in a shop, there's always work to do
37:38SPEAKERthat's like the mindless work that requires
37:40SPEAKERa fair amount of concentration, but you can kind of like,
37:43SPEAKERyou can kind of get in the zone and just like sorting,
37:46SPEAKERlike almost every shop I've ever been in has a bucket
37:49SPEAKERthat you put in all the loose screws that you've pulled out
37:51SPEAKERand didn't put back into the right bins
37:53SPEAKERwhen you were done with them.
37:55SPEAKERAnd like going through and sorting that stuff
37:57SPEAKERand putting it where it goes is a really good example
37:59SPEAKERof like dealing with that mental log jam kind of stuff, so.
38:03SPEAKER- Right, like it seems like that kind of action
38:05SPEAKERseems very mundane and repetitive.
38:07SPEAKER- Yeah.
38:08SPEAKER- But actually doing it is pretty,
38:09SPEAKERit seems pretty beneficial to me.
38:11SPEAKER- It's like mowing where you're trying to like exactly
38:14SPEAKERline up the next track with the previous track
38:17SPEAKERso that you don't have any,
38:17SPEAKERyou have exactly the right amount of overlap, right?
38:20SPEAKER- Totally, totally.
38:21SPEAKER- Yeah.
38:22SPEAKER- So anyway, yeah, Inside Timer is the name of that app.
38:24SPEAKERIt's free to download and meditation, I think,
38:28SPEAKERespecially in these times is pretty helpful
38:30SPEAKERand this is gonna get started
38:31SPEAKERand find some teachers that you like.
38:34SPEAKERLike I said, there's everything from like,
38:37SPEAKERlike Buddhist monks that deliver lessons on there
38:41SPEAKERand like just the kind of full range of different types
38:44SPEAKERof content.
38:45SPEAKER- I like that it's different kinds of meditation too
38:47SPEAKER'cause that Headspace app is mostly just,
38:49SPEAKERit's basically just the mindfulness meditation
38:52SPEAKERwhere you're like, hey, clear your mind of all thoughts,
38:55SPEAKERfocus on your breathing, yada, yada.
38:57SPEAKER- There's definitely like a bulk of pure mindfulness
39:00SPEAKERtype stuff on here, but there's like,
39:01SPEAKERthere's a bunch that are specifically meant to induce sleep.
39:05SPEAKER- Okay.
39:05SPEAKER- I'm just, I'm scrolling through it right now.
39:07SPEAKERA bunch of breathing techniques.
39:08SPEAKER- Like David Lynch to lead you in transcendental meditation?
39:12SPEAKER- Oh man, that I would pay for.
39:14SPEAKER- You know his policy, right?
39:15SPEAKER- No.
39:16SPEAKER- He never takes interviews about his films,
39:18SPEAKERbut anybody who wants to talk to him
39:20SPEAKERabout transcendental meditation, he'll talk to him.
39:22SPEAKERI'm serious. - His door's always open.
39:23SPEAKER- Wow. - Yeah.
39:26SPEAKERMaybe we should see if we get him on the podcast.
39:28SPEAKER- David Lynch is a national treasure.
39:29SPEAKER- I would love to have like,
39:31SPEAKERif we were talking about two directors,
39:33SPEAKERI would love to talk to you about literally any topic.
39:35SPEAKERIt's like David Lynch and John Waters
39:36SPEAKERare probably number one and number two.
39:38SPEAKER- Sure.
39:39SPEAKER- Right?
39:40SPEAKER- Yeah.
39:41SPEAKERI could see it.
39:42SPEAKERDavid Lynch would talk about growing his hair out.
39:44SPEAKER- Yeah, and like, yeah.
39:46SPEAKERI mean, I hear that he can probably feel the hair grow
39:48SPEAKERbecause of the transcendental meditation.
39:50SPEAKER- Yes.
39:51SPEAKERJohn Waters from every interview I've read
39:53SPEAKERis also a heck of a character.
39:55SPEAKER- John Waters, I, anytime somebody
39:58SPEAKERwho's good at doing interviews
39:59SPEAKERdoes an interview with John Waters,
40:01SPEAKERI get so excited because he's such a delightful weirdo.
40:03SPEAKER- Yes.
40:05SPEAKER- And it's like-- - Very entertaining.
40:06SPEAKER- And he reached the stage about 20 years ago
40:09SPEAKERwhere he just stopped giving any fucks
40:10SPEAKERwhat anybody thought about him
40:12SPEAKERand was just like, you know what?
40:13SPEAKERI'm just gonna tell people what I think.
40:15SPEAKERAnd he's a wonderful human being.
40:17SPEAKER- Yes.
40:18SPEAKER- Or it seems to be, I don't know.
40:19SPEAKERHe may be a real dirt bag, but anyway.
40:22SPEAKER- I guess the only other app I've got is,
40:24SPEAKERlet's see, as I opened it on my iPad,
40:26SPEAKERI guess it's just called Seven Minutes now.
40:29SPEAKERSeven digits, seven minutes.
40:31SPEAKER- So you do, okay, you go into the basement,
40:34SPEAKERyou find a closet,
40:35SPEAKERyou take one other person that's at the party
40:36SPEAKERin there with you.
40:37SPEAKER- Yes, seven minutes. - And you turn on the app.
40:40SPEAKER- Seven minutes in exercise heaven.
40:42SPEAKER- Oh yeah.
40:43SPEAKERWas this based on that New York Times workout thing
40:45SPEAKERfrom a few years ago?
40:46SPEAKER- Yeah, so I don't know who, is that,
40:47SPEAKERis that who came up with it?
40:49SPEAKERI thought it was like some government fitness
40:51SPEAKERor health agency or something.
40:54SPEAKERI thought it was, I thought this came out
40:55SPEAKERof like science and research, not a newspaper.
40:58SPEAKER- I thought it, I think it did.
40:59SPEAKERI think the whole point of it was
41:00SPEAKERwe wanna come up with like exercises you can do
41:02SPEAKERin like, how can we turn the normal 45 minute workout
41:06SPEAKERinto a, or 30 minute workout into a less than 10 minutes?
41:10SPEAKER- It's definitely that philosophy of let's cut out
41:12SPEAKERall the rest breaks and just do a high intensity,
41:14SPEAKERyou know, interval situation.
41:16SPEAKER- Six minute abs.
41:18SPEAKER- Six minute abs, sure, something like that.
41:21SPEAKERI'm Googling it right now.
41:22SPEAKEROkay, yeah, there is something on the New York Times
41:23SPEAKERfrom 2013, maybe that's where it was publicized.
41:26SPEAKERThe Scientific Seven Minute Workout
41:28SPEAKERis the name of this article.
41:29SPEAKERLet me take a look.
41:30SPEAKERYeah, this is exactly it.
41:31SPEAKERIt's jumping jacks, wall sits, pushups, abdominal crunches,
41:36SPEAKERstep ups onto a chair, squats, tricep dips on chair,
41:39SPEAKERplanks, excuse me, high knees running in place,
41:43SPEAKERlunges, pushups and rotations and side planks.
41:45SPEAKERThat's exactly it.
41:48SPEAKER- This isn't gonna give you like aerobic stuff.
41:50SPEAKERThis is just gonna, I mean,
41:51SPEAKERit gives you a little bit of aerobic stuff.
41:52SPEAKER- There's some, it's not a, like,
41:54SPEAKERmy understanding of like cardiovascular fitness
41:56SPEAKERis like longer is better, right?
41:58SPEAKER- Yeah.
41:59SPEAKER- Like that's the kind of situation
42:00SPEAKERwhere you do need time to get the full effect, I think.
42:02SPEAKER- Yeah, I think that's where you need to go on a walk
42:03SPEAKERor a jog or something like that.
42:04SPEAKER- Right, so like, this is not a catch all.
42:06SPEAKERLike you probably want to supplement it
42:08SPEAKERwith some more extended cardio,
42:09SPEAKERbut especially in these particular times
42:13SPEAKERwhen it's kind of not great to go outside a lot.
42:17SPEAKER- That seems good.
42:18SPEAKER- I've found like you can do this pretty easily
42:20SPEAKERin a relatively small apartment like ours.
42:23SPEAKERYou just need some hand weights and some space
42:25SPEAKERto do like jumping jacks and pushups and stuff.
42:27SPEAKER- A little bit of a wall,
42:28SPEAKERa little bit of free wall somewhere.
42:30SPEAKER- Yes, you need a wall to sit against.
42:34SPEAKERNow that I think about it, when you put it that way,
42:35SPEAKERlike that you certainly don't need the specific app
42:37SPEAKERthat I have in mind.
42:39SPEAKER- But like-
42:40SPEAKER- 'Cause now I'm searching on the App Store
42:42SPEAKERand there's a ton of them out there.
42:44SPEAKERBut this one has like the basic one that I just rattled off,
42:47SPEAKERlike the scientific one is free.
42:49SPEAKER- Oh, yeah, that's perfect.
42:50SPEAKER- It's just, you know, it's got computer lady voice
42:52SPEAKERand it just prompts you.
42:53SPEAKERIt's basically 30 seconds on, 10 seconds off
42:55SPEAKERfor each of those exercises.
42:56SPEAKERSo you do 30 seconds one, you get 10 second rest
42:59SPEAKERand then you do the next one.
43:00SPEAKER- That sounds good.
43:01SPEAKER- This just prompts you for those, you know,
43:03SPEAKERit just calls out like all the timings for, okay, rests,
43:06SPEAKERokay, now do pushups and that kind of thing.
43:09SPEAKERThere's a bunch of, I'm scrolling through here.
43:11SPEAKERI mean, they've got a bunch of like more specifics.
43:16SPEAKERThey have a seven minute cardio, seven minute core,
43:19SPEAKERseven minute booty.
43:24SPEAKER- Is that where you get the pirate's treasure?
43:26SPEAKER- Yes, I'm sure that's exactly the booty
43:28SPEAKERthat they're talking about.
43:29SPEAKER- Yes, you do your seven minutes and you find a chest
43:31SPEAKERof gold doubloons at the end.
43:34SPEAKER- Sweet.
43:35SPEAKER- I don't know how much these costs,
43:38SPEAKER20 bucks to unlock everything in this particular app forever
43:41SPEAKERwhich is, you can customize the workout
43:45SPEAKERso you can make them longer or like increase the number
43:47SPEAKERof repetitions or whatever.
43:50SPEAKERBut this one is made by, I'm never gonna find it.
43:56SPEAKER- We'll just post a link in the show notes.
43:58SPEAKER- Yeah, maybe just Google, or not Google,
44:01SPEAKERbut like this is on iOS.
44:02SPEAKERIf you just go in the app store
44:03SPEAKERand search like seven minute workout,
44:05SPEAKERyou were sure to find it.
44:06SPEAKERIt's got an orange icon with a big seven on it.
44:08SPEAKERBut yeah, like that's this kind of stuff
44:11SPEAKERthat I've been trying to hold myself to
44:13SPEAKERand doing a very poor job of it.
44:16SPEAKERBut like blue light, meditation and exercise.
44:21SPEAKER- I was doing--
44:22SPEAKER- Very important, important maintenance stuff.
44:24SPEAKER- These are good, this is good advice.
44:26SPEAKER- I was early in the pandemic,
44:30SPEAKERI was doing probably 30 minutes of like pistol whip
44:33SPEAKERor beat saber almost every day, probably five days a week.
44:36SPEAKERAnd I felt really spectacular.
44:39SPEAKERLike it sounds goofy, but like beat saber
44:42SPEAKERwith like some two pound wrist weights
44:45SPEAKERgets your heart going.
44:46SPEAKER- Oh, I bet.
44:47SPEAKER- And pistol whip is like secret lunge exercise, right?
44:51SPEAKER'Cause like when you get on the higher levels
44:52SPEAKERof pistol whip, like if you just do the low level stuff,
44:54SPEAKERyou'll never notice.
44:56SPEAKERBut if you do the high level stuff,
44:57SPEAKERit's a lot of like whole body left, whole body right,
45:00SPEAKERwhole body left, whole body down, whole body up
45:02SPEAKERkind of stuff to get around the obstacles in the path.
45:05SPEAKERAnd they've been doing a really good job
45:08SPEAKERof rolling out new maps, both beat saber and pistol whip
45:12SPEAKERhave like looked at how people are using it to exercise
45:14SPEAKERand are making the newer songs much more exercisey,
45:19SPEAKERnot necessarily more difficult,
45:20SPEAKERbut more like movement on the player's part.
45:25SPEAKERAnd like one day I played pistol whip
45:27SPEAKERuntil my legs were so tired, they weren't working.
45:29SPEAKER- Wow.
45:30SPEAKER- Like I've never in my life wanted to do lunges
45:33SPEAKERlonger than I had to do lunges,
45:34SPEAKERbut based on who was yelling at me
45:35SPEAKERto do lunges at the moment.
45:37SPEAKERSo it was a new thing for me.
45:40SPEAKER- I started to ask if you have an exercise headset of choice,
45:43SPEAKERbut is that just the quest by default for obvious reasons?
45:47SPEAKER- I actually, I like the five,
45:50SPEAKERthe index best for exercise.
45:52SPEAKER- Wow.
45:54SPEAKER- I got close cell face.
45:57SPEAKERI always get close cell face masks for headsets
46:00SPEAKERso that they don't absorb sweat and get-
46:01SPEAKER- That was my next question.
46:03SPEAKERHow do you deal with the sweating?
46:04SPEAKER- Yeah.
46:05SPEAKER- What are those exactly?
46:06SPEAKER- So they're like, it's like a closed cell foam
46:09SPEAKERwith a fake leather, soft fake leather, soft neoprene
46:12SPEAKERor something on the outside usually.
46:15SPEAKERVR cover makes the ones that I usually buy.
46:18SPEAKERAnd it's usually like 15 or 20 bucks for two of them.
46:20SPEAKERSo they don't last forever,
46:22SPEAKER'cause the foam gets squished down eventually,
46:24SPEAKERbut they do better with the moisture
46:28SPEAKERthan the default cloth or soft foam ones
46:31SPEAKERthat come on most headsets.
46:32SPEAKER- Is this a full replacement for the cushion
46:34SPEAKERon the headset or is it an insert that goes in between?
46:37SPEAKER- So you can get ones that are inserts
46:39SPEAKERthat you would use at like a trade show
46:40SPEAKERor something like that, that you just like stick on.
46:43SPEAKERBut the ones that I use at home are full replacements.
46:45SPEAKERSo those things are all,
46:46SPEAKERI think on the index they're magneted in place,
46:49SPEAKERbut on most of the other headsets is just like Velcro
46:51SPEAKERand you can peel them off and then stick new ones back on.
46:54SPEAKER- What is it about the index that you like better for X?
46:56SPEAKERLike I would assume that just by the lack of cords
46:59SPEAKERwith the Quest by default would trump everything else
47:01SPEAKERin terms of being able to move around.
47:03SPEAKER- Well, so with Beat Saber and Pistol Whip,
47:05SPEAKERyou don't really do a whole lot of,
47:05SPEAKERI mean, there are now turning levels for Beat Saber,
47:08SPEAKERbut if I wanna exercise, it's not what I play.
47:12SPEAKERSo you mostly, you're standing in one place
47:13SPEAKERfacing one direction, so the cord doesn't matter.
47:16SPEAKERAnd the thing about the index is the headset
47:19SPEAKERis balanced better, so they actually put extra weight
47:23SPEAKERin the back of that thing so that it's not as front heavy
47:26SPEAKERand doesn't constantly pull your head down toward the front.
47:29SPEAKER- Interesting.
47:30SPEAKER- Which when you're moving around a lot
47:32SPEAKERactually makes a difference, I feel like.
47:34SPEAKER- Sure, sure.
47:35SPEAKER- The other thing is that the Quest often,
47:38SPEAKERlike for me, the performance, the 120 hertz that you get
47:43SPEAKERin those games is much more comfortable to my eyes
47:47SPEAKERthan the Quest's slower frame rate.
47:52SPEAKER- Sure, sure.
47:53SPEAKERWould you consider, I mean, I know you're not
47:55SPEAKERan exercise therapist or whatever,
47:57SPEAKERbut at least as far as I'm aware.
48:00SPEAKER- I am not an exercise therapist at all, that's correct.
48:03SPEAKER- Would you consider, I mean, like I still need
48:04SPEAKERto play through Half-Life Alyx.
48:06SPEAKERWould you consider just a standard game like that
48:09SPEAKERthat you play standing, but it doesn't emphasize
48:11SPEAKERlike repetitive specific movements, it's much more random
48:16SPEAKERand kind of like up and down in terms of your activity level
48:19SPEAKERbut would you still consider that like some degree
48:22SPEAKERof valid exercise?
48:23SPEAKER- I think, I mean, you're standing, right?
48:25SPEAKERLike you're gonna get more.
48:27SPEAKER- It's like even standing is good for you, of course, but.
48:29SPEAKER- Yeah, so when I went to Valve and played for 10 hours
48:34SPEAKERover a day and a half, my legs were sore the next day
48:39SPEAKERjust from standing and like just squatting down
48:41SPEAKERand bending over and picking stuff up constantly.
48:42SPEAKERIt's like, you know how you clean out the garage
48:45SPEAKERand you get sore, you're tired after cleaning out the garage
48:47SPEAKER'cause you're doing stuff that you don't normally do.
48:49SPEAKERIt's kind of like that.
48:50SPEAKERLike I don't think you're getting,
48:52SPEAKERlike you're not getting aerobic exercise
48:53SPEAKERor anything like that, but like you're definitely moving
48:55SPEAKERaround more than you are sitting in front of your computer
48:56SPEAKERplaying Borderlands or whatever.
48:58SPEAKER- Sure, some amount of resistance is happening.
49:00SPEAKER- Yeah, you're up and down.
49:02SPEAKER- Gravity if nothing else.
49:03SPEAKER- And honestly, like the way the gravity glove works
49:07SPEAKERin that game, like my arm, like just the pullback motion
49:11SPEAKERthat you do, that thing, like my arm was a little
49:14SPEAKERlike not sore, but it was, I definitely felt it
49:16SPEAKERthe next day a little bit.
49:17SPEAKER- Is that like tennis elbow, gravity gun arm?
49:20SPEAKER- No, it was just like, it's a quick motion that you stop.
49:23SPEAKERSo like you're using both sides of the muscles
49:26SPEAKERand like in ways that I don't normally use them, so.
49:29SPEAKER- Sure.
49:31SPEAKER- Yeah.
49:32SPEAKERHey, this is completely off topic in a non sequitur,
49:36SPEAKERbut have you seen the Nintendo Game Boy hacking?
49:40SPEAKERAre you aware of the hacking scene around that?
49:42SPEAKER- Oh yeah, oh yeah, it's wild.
49:44SPEAKER- Dude, I had no idea.
49:44SPEAKER- There's some crazy stuff going on in there.
49:46SPEAKER- I had no idea that people were like basically
49:49SPEAKERlike replacing boards and replacing screens and.
49:52SPEAKER- Oh yeah, there's a big aftermarket case scene
49:55SPEAKERfor that thing.
49:56SPEAKER- Yeah, like building metal cases and stuff for it.
49:58SPEAKER- There's like, there's a lot of nice plastic
50:00SPEAKERreplacement cases, but yeah, people are machining
50:02SPEAKERactual metal cases for their Game Boys, Game Boy Advances.
50:05SPEAKERI don't think, I don't see a lot of the hinged models
50:07SPEAKERbeing replicated 'cause obviously that's a lot more
50:09SPEAKERcomplicated mechanically.
50:10SPEAKER- Yeah.
50:11SPEAKER- But I've seen like the original horizontal model
50:14SPEAKERGame Boy Advance, I've seen like nice metal machined cases
50:18SPEAKERmade for that and the screen mod stuff is like the focal
50:23SPEAKERpoint of all that stuff, right?
50:24SPEAKER- Yeah.
50:25SPEAKER- Making a better looking, more responsive, better lit
50:28SPEAKERscreen for the Game Boy is like kind of the thing there.
50:31SPEAKER- Putting like a really nice IPS backlit screen
50:35SPEAKERon a Game Boy SP, GBA SP.
50:38SPEAKER- Yeah.
50:39SPEAKER- It seems like a really lovely thing to do.
50:41SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't know where that stuff is at.
50:43SPEAKERI was looking at it over the last couple of years
50:46SPEAKERand as of about a year ago, there were issues with like
50:49SPEAKERvertical tearing and latency on some of those screens.
50:52SPEAKERLike they had not quite dialed in the whole pipeline.
50:55SPEAKER- Okay.
50:56SPEAKER- And I'm not, I don't know enough about the electronics
50:58SPEAKERto say why exactly, but I think they're getting there.
51:02SPEAKER- Huh.
51:02SPEAKER- Like the last IPS model screen I saw come out
51:04SPEAKERsay it had some disclaimers about like, oh, you know,
51:07SPEAKERthey're this and this are not ideal on this thing,
51:09SPEAKERbut it's better.
51:11SPEAKER- So I found out about this 'cause there was a wired article
51:16SPEAKERa couple of days ago and it looks like,
51:18SPEAKERlike nobody's talking about that on the subreddit.
51:20SPEAKERSo I assume that there's probably some stuff on,
51:24SPEAKERsome stuff happening.
51:25SPEAKER- Like I said, this has been a while.
51:27SPEAKERSo there are very well, maybe better models out there now.
51:30SPEAKERI've never seen one in person.
51:32SPEAKERPeter Brown at GameSpot when he's no longer at GameSpot.
51:35SPEAKERSo I don't have the option anymore,
51:36SPEAKERbut he had done some of these mods
51:38SPEAKERand I meant to take a look at his first first hand,
51:41SPEAKERjust to get a good sense of them and never got around to it.
51:44SPEAKER- I think.
51:44SPEAKER- But even all the pictures I've seen of him,
51:46SPEAKERlike the I've seen side by sides of like,
51:48SPEAKERhere's my old Game Boy Advance sitting right next
51:50SPEAKERto this new IPS mod I just did.
51:51SPEAKERAnd like the, even in photos, the difference is striking.
51:54SPEAKERLike it looks incredible.
51:55SPEAKER- So bright 'cause like the screen thing
51:58SPEAKERthat I put on my GBA that my first sideways GBA
52:01SPEAKERwas probably the first thing I ever like took apart
52:05SPEAKERand changed rather than took it taking,
52:07SPEAKERlike I took apart stuff and clean contacts
52:09SPEAKERand stuff before that, but like taking it apart
52:10SPEAKERand having to carve out bits of the plastic
52:12SPEAKERto put the backlight kit out or the front light kit on.
52:14SPEAKER- Was that the afterburner?
52:16SPEAKER- Yeah, the afterburner was like, was terrifying.
52:18SPEAKERI was afraid I was gonna jack that thing up.
52:20SPEAKER- Sure.
52:22SPEAKER- And yeah, like it's cool to see people still doing this.
52:25SPEAKERI didn't, I had no idea.
52:27SPEAKER- Yeah, from what I've seen, like the difference in
52:28SPEAKERjust like richness and saturation of the colors,
52:30SPEAKERlike the depth of the blacks,
52:31SPEAKERlike it is an incredible difference.
52:34SPEAKERLike it's...
52:36SPEAKER- Well, there we go.
52:37SPEAKER- Granted, I don't have any desire to sit around
52:39SPEAKERplaying an actual Game Boy.
52:41SPEAKER- They're really uncomfortable to hold.
52:43SPEAKERThe GBA, the first GBA was maybe
52:45SPEAKERthe most comfortable handheld.
52:47SPEAKER- Yeah, I think sure.
52:48SPEAKERLike, yeah, sure, I think so.
52:51SPEAKER- I guess the switch with the grippy nubs
52:53SPEAKERon the corner is pretty good.
52:55SPEAKER- Yeah.
52:56SPEAKER- But like in terms of the old days,
52:58SPEAKERthe GBA was pretty okay.
53:01SPEAKER- Yes.
53:03SPEAKER- Anyway, I guess that's a show.
53:05SPEAKER- Okay.
53:05SPEAKER- Yeah, thanks for...
53:07SPEAKER- Thanks for yourselves, everybody.
53:09SPEAKER- Yeah, let's, you know, before we go,
