26: Come On Downe to Dongle Towne!

2020-03-15 · 41:47

00:00SPEAKER(upbeat music)

00:30SPEAKER- Welcome to another episode of Brad Will Made of Tech Pot.

00:32SPEAKERI'm Will.

00:33SPEAKER- Hey Will, I'm Brad.

00:34SPEAKERIt's me, hi.

00:35SPEAKER- Hey, Brad.

00:36SPEAKER- You found me.

00:37SPEAKER- You seem so far away.

00:38SPEAKER- I'm trying to hide out in my home,

00:39SPEAKERbut I can't escape the need to talk tech.

00:41SPEAKER- Wait, we gotta do the cold open.

00:42SPEAKERI forgot to do the cold open.

00:44SPEAKER- That's okay.

00:45SPEAKERYou know what?

00:46SPEAKERI think a lot of standards are going out the window

00:46SPEAKERright now, so it's probably fine.

00:47SPEAKER- Everything's backwards.

00:48SPEAKERThe world is upside down.

00:50SPEAKER- Yeah.

00:51SPEAKER- Wait, that's an Hamilton song.

00:53SPEAKERHow you doing, man?

00:54SPEAKERHow's your work?

00:55SPEAKERWelcome to the work from home experiment.

00:56SPEAKER- Yeah, you know, I don't mind it so much.

00:59SPEAKERLike we do it pretty regularly

01:01SPEAKERin the course of things anyway.

01:02SPEAKERSo it's just kind of expanding that out a little bit.

01:05SPEAKER- You guys are like one day a week usually, right?

01:08SPEAKER- Yes, that's typically what we do.

01:10SPEAKERSo, but there are a lot of things

01:12SPEAKERbecause the rest of the week spent in the office

01:13SPEAKERthat I wasn't equipped for,

01:15SPEAKERlike capturing video from video game consoles

01:18SPEAKERand a lot of stuff like that.

01:19SPEAKERSo still a lot of stuff to figure out.

01:22SPEAKER- So you've been setting up a lot of new hardware

01:23SPEAKERthis week while...

01:25SPEAKER- Yes, yes.

01:26SPEAKERI should we just get right down to it?

01:29SPEAKERI think I know where this is going.

01:31SPEAKER- We have some business first.

01:32SPEAKERWe have some business to attend to.

01:33SPEAKERFirst off, big podcast news.

01:35SPEAKERThis is the biggest podcast news we've had yet, I think.

01:38SPEAKERWe're launching a Patreon.

01:39SPEAKERThis is unsurprising if you read the survey.

01:42SPEAKER- Wait, is that how we're saying it?

01:43SPEAKER- I mean, right?

01:45SPEAKERI mean, we're not--

01:45SPEAKER- Patreon?

01:46SPEAKER- Wait, you say Patreon, not Patreon?

01:49SPEAKER- I've never heard the word,

01:50SPEAKERI've never heard that pronunciation before.

01:52SPEAKER- Well, it's for patronage.

01:54SPEAKERIt's not for patronage.

01:55SPEAKER- You mean patronage?

01:57SPEAKER- Shit, do I say this wrong?

01:58SPEAKER- Man.

01:59SPEAKER- Oh, somewhere someone's yelling at me right now.

02:02SPEAKER- Let's ask some Renaissance era aristocrats

02:05SPEAKERhow you're supposed to say that.

02:06SPEAKER- I'm sure somebody will tell me that I'm wrong.

02:08SPEAKERBut anyway, yeah, we're launching a Patreon.

02:10SPEAKERWe have a couple of different tiers.

02:12SPEAKERThere's benefits at all sorts of tiers,

02:15SPEAKERincluding access to the exclusive tech pod discord,

02:21SPEAKERwhere people have already found the Patreon just to be clear.

02:23SPEAKER- A handful of very intrepid industrious folks

02:26SPEAKERfound their way in there already.

02:27SPEAKER- Yeah, so it's up now at patreon.com/techpod.

02:32SPEAKERWe're gonna do a patron exclusive show.

02:36SPEAKEROnce a month is the plan right now,

02:37SPEAKERbut as with a lot of this podcast,

02:39SPEAKERit kind of we're figuring it out as we go along.

02:41SPEAKER- Yes, yes, kind of work in progress,

02:44SPEAKERlike soft launch, let's say.

02:46SPEAKERIt's like phase two of the soft launch.

02:48SPEAKER- Yeah, we're gonna do,

02:49SPEAKERthere'll be some kind of exclusive content at the $5 tier,

02:52SPEAKERand then there's some higher tiers for people

02:53SPEAKERwho wanna get shout outs and stuff like that.

02:57SPEAKER- We're really excited about it and appreciate you guys.

03:00SPEAKERIt's maybe the biggest piece of feedback we've gotten

03:04SPEAKERthat you should please do a Patreon.

03:08SPEAKER- You know, that's not the worst feedback to get, honestly.

03:10SPEAKER- It's very gratifying.

03:11SPEAKERI was very grateful to our audience.

03:12SPEAKERYou guys are awesome.

03:13SPEAKER- And honestly, speaking of gratifying,

03:15SPEAKERI will say I remain grateful

03:16SPEAKERthat anybody even listens to this thing.

03:18SPEAKERSo anything on top of that is a much appreciated bonus.

03:21SPEAKER- Yeah, but yeah.

03:23SPEAKERSo the big thing that's happening this week, obviously,

03:26SPEAKERis that most of America is shutting down,

03:29SPEAKERlarge portions of America are shutting down for coronavirus.

03:32SPEAKERI feel like we're on maybe the second wave

03:35SPEAKER'cause we're in the Bay Area,

03:37SPEAKERand Seattle got hit harder earlier there,

03:40SPEAKERa little bit in our future.

03:41SPEAKER- Yeah, and people even here started taking preemptive action

03:45SPEAKERlike a lot of people have been working from home

03:47SPEAKERfor a week plus at this point.

03:49SPEAKER- I mean, I pulled my daughter out of school

03:50SPEAKERat the start of what's now last week for listeners.

03:54SPEAKERSo she's been out of school all week this week,

03:56SPEAKERand when we started having community spread cases,

03:59SPEAKERI work from home, my wife works in the house,

04:01SPEAKERthere's no reason for us to expose ourselves

04:03SPEAKERany more than we needed to.

04:04SPEAKERSo we're over here flattening the curve, Brad.

04:06SPEAKER- Yeah, working on it.

04:07SPEAKERMy mom, unbidden, used the phrase flatten the curve

04:13SPEAKERin a text message yesterday.

04:14SPEAKERI was very proud.

04:15SPEAKER- Marketing works, good job.

04:17SPEAKER- They're keeping up.

04:18SPEAKERI mean, hey, everybody's in this together.

04:19SPEAKER- Yeah, there are definitely a lot of sources out there

04:22SPEAKERfor coronavirus information.

04:23SPEAKERWe were gonna have somebody, an epidemiologist,

04:25SPEAKERcome on and talk to us this week,

04:26SPEAKERbut scheduling that has gotten challenging

04:29SPEAKERbecause of- - Yeah, it turns out

04:30SPEAKERthe people that know how this stuff works

04:33SPEAKERare in pretty high demand right now.

04:35SPEAKERI was excited to hear about R0,

04:37SPEAKERbut we'll maybe get to that soon.

04:39SPEAKER- Yeah, hopefully we'll do that at some point in the future.

04:41SPEAKERWe have some other friends we can get on

04:42SPEAKERif we can't schedule an epidemiologist.

04:46SPEAKERBut I mean, I think this is a good opportunity

04:48SPEAKERto talk about working from home.

04:49SPEAKERI've been doing it now for five years,

04:53SPEAKERwhich is a lot for four and a half years, I guess.

04:57SPEAKERIt's a lot of working from home.

05:00SPEAKERI gotta imagine, more than anything else,

05:03SPEAKERyour monitor situation has really come to a head this week.

05:06SPEAKER- That's, yeah, that's really the only topic on my mind.

05:10SPEAKERI dragged a monitor home. - Really, that's the only one?

05:12SPEAKERThat's it, Brad?

05:12SPEAKERThat's the only thing you're thinking about right now?

05:14SPEAKER- Well, in the very narrow range of tech topics

05:19SPEAKERthat pertain to this podcast,

05:21SPEAKERthat's what I've been thinking about.

05:23SPEAKER- Okay, that's fair.

05:23SPEAKER- In other sociopolitical terms, there's a lot more

05:27SPEAKERon my mind.

05:28SPEAKERBut yeah, so I dragged them on.

05:31SPEAKERI'm in monitor crisis right now, man.

05:33SPEAKER- Wait, did you carry a monitor on the bus, Brad?

05:36SPEAKER- Well, I took a lift.

05:38SPEAKER- Okay, that's-- - Company property.

05:40SPEAKER- Yeah, you gotta protect that.

05:41SPEAKER- I'm not gonna, you know,

05:42SPEAKERI can't put company property at risk.

05:45SPEAKERBut yeah, so I, for a variety of reasons,

05:48SPEAKERI dragged a monitor home from work.

05:51SPEAKER- No, when you get something like really big,

05:54SPEAKERlike a UHD, something like 4K.

05:56SPEAKER- It's a Dell U2415.

05:58SPEAKERIt's not even very fancy at all.

06:00SPEAKERIt's like a $200 monitor.

06:02SPEAKERIt is--

06:03SPEAKER- How many Ps does it have?

06:04SPEAKER- Four or five-year-old model.

06:06SPEAKERIt's 16 by 10, so it's a 1920 by 1200.

06:09SPEAKERBut essentially, it's a 1080p-ish.

06:14SPEAKERNothing fancy.

06:15SPEAKER60 hertz, like one HDMI input.

06:17SPEAKERBut I needed something that, you know,

06:20SPEAKER'cause we're gonna be dealing with the console games,

06:22SPEAKERI needed something with an HDMI input

06:23SPEAKERand that was at least 1080p.

06:26SPEAKERAgain, not the most expensive monitor.

06:28SPEAKERIt's like a four-year-old model.

06:30SPEAKERBut I got it in here and hooked it up.

06:33SPEAKERI got these other two.

06:33SPEAKERI got these two 15-year-old--

06:35SPEAKER- The baby monitors for babies?

06:37SPEAKER- They're actually stacked on top of each other

06:39SPEAKERto my right here.

06:40SPEAKER- Uh-huh, that's almost the size of one real monitor now.

06:43SPEAKER- Anyway, this thing, again, not being super fancy,

06:47SPEAKERlooks so fucking much better than this ancient shit

06:51SPEAKERthat I have, like, I've had my finger hovering

06:54SPEAKERover Amazon order buttons for the last three days

06:56SPEAKERjust trying to resist ordering anything, anything.

07:00SPEAKER- Now's the time.

07:01SPEAKERThere's no better time than now.

07:03SPEAKER- Like, there are cheapo, like, I literally went

07:06SPEAKERto displayninja.com and went to their $100,

07:08SPEAKERlike, of the buyer's guide in the $100 range.

07:10SPEAKERI'm like, there are monitors from 100 to $150

07:14SPEAKERthat are guaranteed to look like 1,000 times better

07:16SPEAKERthan what I've got right now, so, like, I may not,

07:19SPEAKERI may have to get something in here at some point soon.

07:22SPEAKER- You sent me a text the other day that literally said,

07:26SPEAKER"Tell me it's a bad idea to just buy a couple

07:28SPEAKER"of really cheap monitors to hold me out

07:30SPEAKER"while I'm working from home," or something to that effect,

07:32SPEAKERand I was like, "Yeah, that's a really bad idea,

07:33SPEAKER"just buy one." - Why is that a bad idea?

07:34SPEAKER- Just buy, don't, don't, look, don't buy shit

07:37SPEAKERthat's just gonna go in the landfill in a year.

07:40SPEAKERBuy something-- - I would never throw

07:41SPEAKERa monitor away.

07:42SPEAKERI would donate it or sell it.

07:44SPEAKER- I know, but the point is, don't just buy something

07:46SPEAKERto use for, like, monitors should last a long time.

07:48SPEAKER- Oh, hey, knowing-- - I think, good one.

07:49SPEAKER- Knowing me, I will buy these, planning to use them

07:52SPEAKERfor 18 months, and then the decade from now will be--

07:54SPEAKER- I wasn't gonna say that, that was my other thought.

07:57SPEAKER- So, I mean, real quick, just before we move on from this,

08:00SPEAKERlike, my actual thought process, like, you know,

08:02SPEAKERI've been talking for months, obviously,

08:03SPEAKERabout how there's a bunch of--

08:04SPEAKER- Since the dawn of this podcast, actually.

08:06SPEAKER- Uh-huh, yeah, it's an ongoing topic.

08:08SPEAKERWell, you know, like, there are a bunch of nice,

08:11SPEAKERhigher-res IPS panels coming out this year

08:13SPEAKERthat I'm kind of getting tired of waiting for.

08:16SPEAKERThe thought I had, though, is, like, you tell me,

08:19SPEAKERbut it feels like we're, like, two to three years tops

08:23SPEAKERfrom 4K monitors being the new 1080p monitors.

08:26SPEAKERLike, we're getting there.

08:27SPEAKERLike, you can get reasonably priced,

08:30SPEAKERreasonably sized 4K monitors now.

08:32SPEAKER- So I think that's probably the case,

08:33SPEAKERbut I don't, I don't, look, there's gonna be problems

08:38SPEAKERwith 4K gaming for the foreseeable future.

08:40SPEAKEROne is that, like, frame rate is a problem, for sure.

08:43SPEAKER- Yeah, but so, I mean, one of the big factors

08:45SPEAKERin my calculus there is that Nvidia introduced

08:47SPEAKERthe integer scaling in their drivers.

08:49SPEAKERSo you can run, you can run games at 1080p internally

08:53SPEAKERand scale them to 4K quite easily now.

08:55SPEAKERSo you can, that essentially, that solves that problem.

08:58SPEAKER- Well, kind of, but the other problem is,

09:01SPEAKERI mean, yes, it does solve that problem.

09:03SPEAKERThe, I just, I feel like,

09:07SPEAKERit depends on what kind of games you play.

09:09SPEAKERIf you're playing single-player stuff

09:10SPEAKERand you're playing at 30 or 60 hertz, it's fine.

09:12SPEAKERIf you're playing multiplayer,

09:13SPEAKERlike, if you're playing the COD battle royale thing

09:18SPEAKERthat came out this week,

09:20SPEAKERand you wanna be running at 144 frames a second,

09:22SPEAKERyou're not gonna get that at 4K for the foreseeable future.

09:24SPEAKER- Definitely not, yeah, but the point I'm making is,

09:27SPEAKERthat's why I'm looking at just maybe buying

09:29SPEAKERinto some, like, pretty cost-effective 1080p screens now,

09:32SPEAKERand then, like, three years from now or something,

09:34SPEAKERI might, like, sell those for 30 bucks and get into 4K.

09:39SPEAKERThe point I'm making really is that, like,

09:41SPEAKER1440p to me is starting to look more and more

09:43SPEAKERlike kind of a weird stopgap between 1080 and 4K,

09:47SPEAKERand that I would rather just get something

09:50SPEAKERthat's very kind of price-to-performance

09:52SPEAKERand hold out a little bit longer.

09:54SPEAKER- I mean, it depends on what size monitor you're getting to.

09:56SPEAKERI find that at bigger than 24 inches,

09:58SPEAKER1080p is real hard to use.

10:00SPEAKER- Absolutely, yeah, I would not get 1080 at 27 inches.

10:04SPEAKER- Yeah, the, I mean, so if you're looking

10:07SPEAKERat a 24-inch monitor, yeah, 1080p monitors are fine.

10:10SPEAKERI think, you know, I, so I did some monitor rearranging

10:13SPEAKERthis week 'cause I've been spending more time

10:15SPEAKERin front of my desk, and I was like,

10:17SPEAKERI have this big ultra-wide monitor,

10:19SPEAKERbut it's on top of my other, my secondary monitor,

10:22SPEAKERand it pushes that monitor down,

10:23SPEAKERso I was squinching down in my chair too far

10:26SPEAKERto, like, get the monitor at the right height

10:28SPEAKERfor my eyes and all that,

10:29SPEAKERthe main one that I use to play games and work on.

10:32SPEAKERSo I took the ultra-wide, which is on a boom,

10:36SPEAKERit's a 34-inch ultra-wide, and I rotated it portrait.

10:40SPEAKER- What?

10:42SPEAKERDo the drivers even support that?

10:44SPEAKER- Oh yeah, Windows will let you do whatever you want

10:46SPEAKERwith whatever monitor, but it's, it's ridiculous,

10:49SPEAKERlike, it's real dumb, it is so tall.

10:52SPEAKER- What are you putting on that thing?

10:54SPEAKER- So, like, when I'm streaming, it's all my Twitch stuff.

10:57SPEAKER- Okay.

10:58SPEAKER- So it's like, you know, chat and OBS

11:01SPEAKERand all the audio business and Discord and all that.

11:05SPEAKER- That's a lot of real estate,

11:06SPEAKERthat's a lot of chat at one time.

11:08SPEAKER- But like, you can have all of Reddit on there,

11:10SPEAKERlike the whole thing just fits.

11:12SPEAKERLike, it's real tall.

11:15SPEAKER- You need to put a photo of this in the show notes,

11:18SPEAKERthis sounds completely ridiculous.

11:19SPEAKER- Yeah, I'll clean up my desk and if I can take a picture,

11:22SPEAKERyeah, that's a good call.

11:23SPEAKER- Is that thing curved?

11:24SPEAKER- Oh yeah, gentle, gentle curved.

11:27SPEAKERIt's really, it's a look, it's,

11:29SPEAKERmy daughter walked in and was like, "What did you do, Dad?"

11:32SPEAKERIt's like, well, Daddy made some mistakes.

11:35SPEAKER- Oh man, she's reached the stage

11:36SPEAKERof critiquing your desk arranging decisions.

11:39SPEAKER- She hasn't started giving me grief

11:41SPEAKERabout how messy my desk is.

11:42SPEAKER- She has office opinions now.

11:44SPEAKER- She does have feelings.

11:47SPEAKERSo, okay, so your monitor situation,

11:50SPEAKERthe good news is all the rest of your tech stuff

11:51SPEAKERis pretty stable and you've got like a, yeah.

11:54SPEAKER- Actually, maybe not so much.

11:56SPEAKER- What else is happening, Brad?

11:57SPEAKER- I also chose last Friday,

12:00SPEAKERwell, I slash our IT department chose last Friday

12:03SPEAKERto swap my work laptop out.

12:05SPEAKER- Oh no.

12:06SPEAKER- I, we kind of, I maybe could have thought

12:10SPEAKERI had a little bit more about what we might be doing

12:13SPEAKERfor our work situation in the near future,

12:15SPEAKERbut I had a 2013 MacBook Pro, which like two USB 3 ports,

12:21SPEAKERI think, maybe three.

12:22SPEAKERSo it was basically like two Thunderbolt 2 ports,

12:26SPEAKERtwo USB 3, I think.

12:28SPEAKER- Yeah.

12:29SPEAKER- An SD card reader, like everything,

12:30SPEAKERlike all the kind of standard stuff.

12:31SPEAKER- All the things you need, a headphone jack.

12:33SPEAKER- Yeah.

12:34SPEAKERWell, so if this new laptop does have a headphone jack,

12:35SPEAKERbut that's about it.

12:37SPEAKERSo I bring that thing in.

12:38SPEAKER- Did you get one of the butterfly key ones,

12:40SPEAKERthe bad keyboard ones?

12:42SPEAKER- I think so, from what I can tell,

12:45SPEAKERthis one has a slightly modified design,

12:46SPEAKERbut it is still the butterfly switch.

12:49SPEAKER- Okay, is that the touch bar?

12:51SPEAKER- Yes, which I'm not sure how I feel about right now.

12:54SPEAKER- Oh, it's bad.

12:55SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't think I'm a big fan,

12:56SPEAKERbut I really like physical escape key,

12:58SPEAKERwhich I keep reaching for and not finding.

13:00SPEAKERBut so it's a 2019 MacBook Pro that has a headphone jack

13:04SPEAKERand four USB-C ports.

13:06SPEAKERAnd switching to that two workdays, two business days,

13:11SPEAKERbefore we were suddenly homebound, kind of rough.

13:14SPEAKER- I hope you have a whole boatload of dongles.

13:16SPEAKER- I have one.

13:18SPEAKERThey issued me a dongle that has a USB-C,

13:23SPEAKERHDMI, and one USB-A 3.0.

13:26SPEAKER- Oh, so it's like a mini little docking station thing.

13:28SPEAKERThat's not too bad.

13:29SPEAKER- I don't have nothing,

13:30SPEAKERbut I'm pretty limited on what I can do

13:32SPEAKERwith that laptop at the moment.

13:34SPEAKERYeah, so I mean, the shipping and supply chains

13:38SPEAKERhave not completely broken down yet,

13:40SPEAKERso I might have to Amazon a couple of extra adapters here.

13:46SPEAKERIt's been interesting.

13:47SPEAKERIt's been fun, asterisk, to scramble for, you know,

13:53SPEAKERto try to exercise some ingenuity

13:55SPEAKERand make some stuff work here.

13:57SPEAKER- Well, it's good 'cause you have nothing else

13:58SPEAKERgoing on, clearly.

13:59SPEAKERIt's like a really low traffic time.

14:01SPEAKERYou guys aren't shifting to a work-from-home life

14:03SPEAKERor anything like that.

14:04SPEAKER- Yeah, totally.

14:05SPEAKERThere aren't big games about to hit the streets or anything.

14:09SPEAKER- It's funny that you mention the supply chain stuff

14:14SPEAKERbreaking down because I've heard a couple of people

14:17SPEAKERwho are in manufacturing talking about

14:19SPEAKERhow they're not able to get parts,

14:22SPEAKERso their entire building, you know,

14:24SPEAKERlike they're not able to get pick-and-place parts

14:26SPEAKERfor circuit boards and things like that,

14:28SPEAKERlike transistors and capacitors and MOSFETs

14:30SPEAKERand things like that.

14:31SPEAKERSo their whole production lines are shut down and slowed,

14:35SPEAKERwhich is really, yeah.

14:37SPEAKER- It sounds like the beginning of the chain

14:38SPEAKERfor a lot of that stuff.

14:40SPEAKER- Well, it's why we've seen,

14:42SPEAKERI mean, if you think about it,

14:43SPEAKERChinese, a lot of China, factories in China

14:46SPEAKERhave now been offline for a couple of months,

14:48SPEAKERmonth and a half. - For sure, sure.

14:49SPEAKER- From the end of lunar, you know,

14:50SPEAKERthey plan to be off for lunar new year

14:52SPEAKERfor a couple of weeks,

14:53SPEAKERand then, you know, now it's been a month and a half

14:56SPEAKERafter that.

14:57SPEAKER- Okay, so we've had time to deplete our stocks

14:59SPEAKERof those base components.

15:00SPEAKER- So we're starting to get thin or the factories,

15:03SPEAKERyou know, the assembly places themselves

15:04SPEAKERhave been shut down for obvious reasons.

15:08SPEAKERThey, like we're seeing that other places,

15:13SPEAKERthe VR headsets have been thin for a while post-Christmas,

15:16SPEAKERjust because, you know, there's a big run at Christmas time,

15:20SPEAKERand now it's thinned out again.

15:21SPEAKERI think Valve did a quick run of index sales

15:24SPEAKERearlier this week. - Yes.

15:27SPEAKER- The ring, I tried to get a ring fit the other day,

15:29SPEAKERand they're sold out like everywhere.

15:31SPEAKERWhen you go to Best Buy, it says there's no ring fits

15:33SPEAKERwithin 250 miles of your location.

15:35SPEAKERNot that I would go to retail.

15:37SPEAKER- Wow, yeah, apparently that was happening.

15:39SPEAKERThat was even before all this started,

15:41SPEAKERthose things were pretty tough to find, so.

15:43SPEAKER- I think it was the hot toy at Christmas this year,

15:46SPEAKERso it was tough to find.

15:48SPEAKER- One of the 10 best games of 2019, I understand.

15:52SPEAKER- Oh, really?

15:52SPEAKERHuh, interesting. - That's what I'm told.

15:54SPEAKER- Hmm, wasn't on my list, but.

15:57SPEAKER- Sure.

15:59SPEAKER- It's funny, in this whole situation, as we're shifting,

16:01SPEAKERand there's like big societal changes happening,

16:05SPEAKERfor good reason, just to be clear.

16:06SPEAKERWe're, like, I find it comforting

16:09SPEAKERthat we're shutting stuff down.

16:10SPEAKERI wish we'd done it two weeks ago.

16:14SPEAKERI wish I had talked to my grandmother more,

16:16SPEAKER'cause she was born in 1919 and grew up in London,

16:20SPEAKERso she was, you know, she lived, she was a teenager in her 20s

16:24SPEAKERthrough World War II, and the Blitz, and all that,

16:27SPEAKERand she used to tell me stories about what it was like,

16:30SPEAKERyou know, when they were on rationing for 15 years.

16:34SPEAKER- Oh, sure.

16:35SPEAKER- And, you know, what it was like to get bombed

16:37SPEAKERby the Germans every night, and how they kind of--

16:39SPEAKER- Did the rationing extend past the end of the war?

16:41SPEAKER- Yeah, the rationing extended a long time

16:43SPEAKERpast the end of the war, 'cause the food chains were,

16:45SPEAKEREuropean food chains were messed up

16:47SPEAKERfor five or six years after the end of the war.

16:50SPEAKER- Yeah.

16:52SPEAKER- Like, she and my mom, so my dad was a GI,

16:56SPEAKERmy grandfather was a GI, and my grandmother and my mom

16:59SPEAKERstayed there until '46, I think.

17:05SPEAKERAnd then they came over, he came back,

17:08SPEAKERand they came back over on a ship together.

17:11SPEAKERBut yeah, like, she would tell stories about what,

17:14SPEAKERyou know, trading, everybody pooling their ration cards

17:17SPEAKERfor flour so that somebody who was getting married

17:19SPEAKERcould get a wedding cake, and like, the whole block

17:21SPEAKERwould use their flour ration and egg ration

17:24SPEAKERto make a wedding cake, or--

17:25SPEAKER- That's the kind of communal action

17:28SPEAKERthat makes you feel good about, you know,

17:30SPEAKERthe resilience of the human spirit.

17:32SPEAKER- Yeah, like, when she got married,

17:35SPEAKERone of the women who worked in the parachute place,

17:38SPEAKERin the, like, who was a parachute boulder, basically,

17:41SPEAKERtook, stole unused, like, the silk that was,

17:46SPEAKERfrom parachutes that were too damaged

17:47SPEAKERto continue being used, and they made a wedding dress

17:50SPEAKERfor her out of that, right? - Wow, that is incredible.

17:52SPEAKERHoly crap. - Like, it's about,

17:55SPEAKERI mean, it is incredibly stressful, it's really scary,

17:57SPEAKERbut it was also, the stories she told were about

18:00SPEAKERpeople coming together in this time of adversity,

18:02SPEAKERnot, you know, looting or profiteering or whatever.

18:09SPEAKER- Yeah, we seem to be at the,

18:10SPEAKERwe seem to be at the beginning of the process,

18:12SPEAKERbut like, the pattern that seems like it's gonna emerge,

18:14SPEAKERor always emerges in these situations,

18:16SPEAKERis like, there's an initial period of, like,

18:17SPEAKERuncertainty and fear, and then people become,

18:21SPEAKERI don't know if desensitized is the best word,

18:23SPEAKERor like, the reality becomes normalized,

18:25SPEAKERand people get used to it,

18:26SPEAKERand then people start kind of working together,

18:28SPEAKERand like, helping each other out,

18:30SPEAKERand then generally making the best of it, I guess.

18:34SPEAKER- She, she used to tell a story

18:38SPEAKERabout being on a bus home from work,

18:41SPEAKERand the, you know, the, the,

18:45SPEAKERthey did a crazy daylight savings time,

18:47SPEAKERlike four hour daylight savings time,

18:48SPEAKERso that people would be, I don't remember the rationale,

18:52SPEAKERbut the upshot was, it was so the Germans would be,

18:54SPEAKERthey'd be awake at night when the Germans were bombing,

18:56SPEAKERso they could shoot at the Germans or something.

18:57SPEAKERI don't remember why they did the bad daylight savings.

19:00SPEAKERBut, but, they were riding home on the bus,

19:03SPEAKERand this old, the air raid sirens went off,

19:05SPEAKERand they started hearing bombs exploding,

19:07SPEAKERand one of the old guys on the bus said,

19:10SPEAKER"Oh, Jerry's out to get early!"

19:12SPEAKERAnd everybody, like, laughed.

19:15SPEAKERAnd she's like, this is, this is,

19:16SPEAKERpeople can adapt to anything, is the upshot.

19:18SPEAKER- Yeah, that's some real gallows humor, I guess.

19:21SPEAKERI don't know a lot about the day-to-day

19:23SPEAKERgovernment response at the time,

19:24SPEAKERbut like, even just, you know, the visibility

19:27SPEAKERof like, the keep calm and carry on kind of imagery

19:31SPEAKERthat still exists to this day.

19:32SPEAKERLike, it seems like the role of government support

19:36SPEAKERin maintaining the national spirit

19:37SPEAKERwas a lot more prominent back then.

19:39SPEAKER- I think they valued it more, for sure.

19:43SPEAKERLike, they were paying attention.

19:44SPEAKERI mean, we do have that.

19:46SPEAKERLike, flatten the curve is, I'm--

19:47SPEAKER- Sure, yes.

19:48SPEAKER- Like, stuff like that is in the same vein,

19:51SPEAKERmaybe a little more informed.

19:53SPEAKER- That's fair.

19:54SPEAKER- It kind of, it's one of those situations

19:56SPEAKERwhere I feel like, it's difficult to tell

19:58SPEAKERif social media makes this worse or better,

20:00SPEAKER'cause I feel like I'm definitely better informed

20:03SPEAKERthan somebody would have been in, say, 1916,

20:05SPEAKERwhen the Spanish flu was going around.

20:08SPEAKER- Yeah.

20:08SPEAKER- But I don't know if that's helpful.

20:10SPEAKERI mean, it probably makes me a little bit safer,

20:12SPEAKERbut I don't know.

20:13SPEAKER- Definitely have not been sleeping quite as soundly

20:15SPEAKERfor the last few days.

20:16SPEAKER- No, I've stopped reading any social media

20:19SPEAKERafter nine o'clock so that I can, like, sleep.

20:21SPEAKER- That's probably for the best.

20:24SPEAKERI guess the last thing I'll say that I saw on Twitter

20:26SPEAKERabout the response to all this

20:28SPEAKERand the practices that are being undertaken,

20:30SPEAKERI wish I had saved it.

20:31SPEAKERIt was just a short little thread about, you know,

20:34SPEAKERbasically the measures that people are going to right now

20:36SPEAKERare intended to, you know, stem the spread of infection

20:39SPEAKERso that, you know, the healthcare system isn't overwhelmed

20:42SPEAKERand more people don't die all at the same time.

20:44SPEAKERIt's more about spreading the infection out.

20:45SPEAKERBut they were saying, you know,

20:46SPEAKERone of the inevitable consequences of an effective response

20:50SPEAKERis that down the line, a bunch of people are gonna go,

20:52SPEAKERwell, that sure was a lot of to-do about nothing.

20:54SPEAKERAnd the line that really stuck out to me

20:57SPEAKERwas we have to be willing to look like

20:59SPEAKERwe overreacted later on.

21:01SPEAKER- I mean, look, if people are complaining

21:03SPEAKERthat we overreacted, hooray.

21:05SPEAKER- Yeah, I think we've talked about the Y2K analogy before,

21:09SPEAKERbut like that, you know, it's like we have to just assume

21:13SPEAKERthat some people are gonna roll their eyes

21:14SPEAKERand say that it was all a bunch of nonsense.

21:17SPEAKER- I mean, yeah, the Y2K is a perfect example

21:20SPEAKERbecause millions of people worked incredibly hard

21:23SPEAKERto make that not a big deal, right?

21:25SPEAKERAnd we were very lucky as a result of that.

21:27SPEAKERIf, I mean, the thing, and this is not,

21:32SPEAKERlike if you look at what's happening in Italy

21:34SPEAKERand what happened in China and think,

21:37SPEAKERoh, this isn't a big deal, people are overreacting,

21:42SPEAKERthen either you're really, really bad at math

21:44SPEAKERor you're a fool and it's fine to overreact.

21:51SPEAKERBut when you're dealing with something

21:52SPEAKERthat spreads exponentially and is doubling

21:54SPEAKERevery two to seven, six days right now, it seems like,

21:59SPEAKERlike anything we can do to prevent the number of people

22:02SPEAKERthat need to be hospitalized from getting bigger

22:04SPEAKERthan the number of hospital beds we can accommodate,

22:06SPEAKERthe better off we are for us,

22:08SPEAKERfor the healthcare professionals

22:09SPEAKERthat have to do this work every day.

22:11SPEAKERAnd just for anything we need to keep the fatality rate

22:15SPEAKERfrom this down is good.

22:17SPEAKER- Yes, absolutely.

22:19SPEAKERSo obviously then that leads to a lot of questions about,

22:22SPEAKERhey, what does everybody do when they're shut up

22:23SPEAKERin their homes for the next X number of weeks?

22:26SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, the good news is this is a role

22:29SPEAKERI've been training for for the last 20 years.

22:31SPEAKER- You're on top of it.

22:32SPEAKER- Yeah, like when I used to order pizza

22:35SPEAKERand I was home alone, I would have conversations

22:38SPEAKERwith people off camera when the pizza guy came.

22:41SPEAKERSo it didn't seem like I was a sad guy

22:43SPEAKERordering pizza all by myself.

22:46SPEAKER- That is really a commitment to the bit, I'm impressed.

22:48SPEAKER- Oh, hey guys, the pizza's here.

22:50SPEAKER(laughing)

22:52SPEAKER- Here I am partying,

22:53SPEAKERall of my friends are just out of frame.

22:55SPEAKER- Yep, I ordered pizza.

22:57SPEAKERI have 10 minutes to get in the shower before it's here

22:59SPEAKERand I have to be presentable for the pizza delivery person.

23:05SPEAKER- Anxiety's a hell of a drug.

23:06SPEAKERSo yeah, like, I mean,

23:10SPEAKERlike a lot of the normal work from home stuff

23:12SPEAKERmakes a ton of sense here, right?

23:13SPEAKERLike it's really helpful for your mental,

23:17SPEAKERfor my mental health at least,

23:18SPEAKERto maintain the normal routine.

23:19SPEAKERYou know, get up, eat breakfast, take a shower,

23:22SPEAKERdrink some coffee, sit down, you know,

23:24SPEAKERthe only difference is that now I don't have a commute.

23:26SPEAKERSo my commute is eight feet

23:29SPEAKERinstead of spending 45 minutes in the car.

23:32SPEAKERBut I, you know, put on at least athleisure wear,

23:35SPEAKERso, you know, sweatpants and a t-shirt

23:38SPEAKERwith some sort of design on it.

23:40SPEAKER- Yeah.

23:43SPEAKER- Eat meals at the regular times,

23:45SPEAKERdon't fuck up your sleep schedule real bad.

23:47SPEAKER'Cause that's like, it's real easy

23:50SPEAKERwhen you're working from home

23:51SPEAKERto like work until nine o'clock at night

23:52SPEAKERand then sit down and be like,

23:53SPEAKER"Oh shit, how did I do this?"

23:55SPEAKER- Yeah, so I was definitely on Slack

23:56SPEAKERand going through emails at like nine, 9.30 last night

23:59SPEAKERand that's not a good way to be.

24:00SPEAKER- Yeah, no, so like, you know, respect your start time,

24:04SPEAKERrespect your finish time,

24:05SPEAKERyou know, within reason, obviously,

24:08SPEAKERand eat meals at your normal meal-eating times.

24:12SPEAKERYou know, eat breakfast, eat lunch, eat dinner.

24:15SPEAKERYou put in going for walks, which I think is a good idea

24:17SPEAKERas long as you maintain a gap with other people.

24:19SPEAKER- Yes.

24:21SPEAKER- 'Cause I mean, obviously the goal of working from home

24:24SPEAKERin this situation is to prevent infection spread

24:26SPEAKERor to slow infection spread.

24:28SPEAKERSo, but yeah, walks outside are good.

24:33SPEAKERMy wife and daughter had to go deliver

24:35SPEAKERthe last of the Girl Scout cookies yesterday.

24:37SPEAKERSo they were like driving around

24:39SPEAKERand dropping them at people's doors

24:41SPEAKERand then ringing the doorbell and running away

24:43SPEAKERand saying, "Hey, your cookies are here, come get them."

24:46SPEAKER- Yeah, so I've definitely read stories of people

24:48SPEAKERlike sliding paperwork under doors to be signed

24:50SPEAKERand stuff like that.

24:53SPEAKER- Maintaining outside contact with the world.

24:55SPEAKER- Yeah.

24:56SPEAKER- So, you know, my Discord for my Twitch stream

25:01SPEAKERhas been full of people talking about

25:04SPEAKERhow this is impacting their lives

25:05SPEAKERand what they're learning and sharing information.

25:07SPEAKERAnd you're talking about what food they're making

25:10SPEAKERand what shows they're watching

25:11SPEAKERand what they're doing to kill time

25:13SPEAKERwhen they're cooped up inside all the time.

25:15SPEAKER- Yeah, and neither of us have this problem,

25:17SPEAKERbut I imagine that is extra crucial

25:18SPEAKERfor people who live alone.

25:20SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.

25:21SPEAKERI mean, if you're not having adult human contact

25:23SPEAKERwith the rest of the world,

25:25SPEAKERa bunch of people are doing Zoom calls.

25:27SPEAKERLike a bunch of people in my VR world

25:29SPEAKERare having like a Monday Zoom call get together

25:32SPEAKERwhere they all hop on and kind of chat

25:34SPEAKERand talk about how they're doing.

25:37SPEAKER- Like, it's actually like, just real quick,

25:39SPEAKERlike I just, this occurred to me as you were saying that,

25:41SPEAKERlike it's funny how much of a positive psychological effect

25:44SPEAKERjust hearing about stuff like that has.

25:45SPEAKERLike, like it's in my mind, it was going from,

25:48SPEAKER"Oh my God, it's doom and gloom, the world's ending.

25:50SPEAKERLike, what are we going to do?"

25:51SPEAKERTo hearing stuff like that.

25:52SPEAKERIt's like, "Oh, we could get through this.

25:53SPEAKERLike, this is going to be fine."

25:54SPEAKERLike there are positive aspects here.

25:56SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, this isn't the stand, right?

25:58SPEAKERLike we're not, we're not,

26:00SPEAKERwe're not in an epic battle for good and evil

26:02SPEAKERwith spiritual forces from beyond our ken.

26:05SPEAKERThis is like...

26:07SPEAKER(laughing)

26:08SPEAKERI mean, yeah, give us some time.

26:11SPEAKER- Bring out your dead.

26:12SPEAKER- Yeah, this is, this is a disease.

26:15SPEAKERAnd like, there's no mystery in how we deal with this

26:18SPEAKERif we're smart.

26:21SPEAKERSo yeah, the, oh, FaceTiming friends and family.

26:25SPEAKERThis is, if you have little kids, you know this all the time

26:27SPEAKERbut like if you're eating lunch and you're there by yourself

26:29SPEAKERand you're alone and you're lonely, you know,

26:31SPEAKERgive your folks a call or give your kid a call

26:33SPEAKERor give your aunts or uncles, text your, you know,

26:36SPEAKERone of the things we've been checking in with our neighbors,

26:39SPEAKERwe have a bunch of neighbors who are in their like

26:41SPEAKERearly sixties, mid sixties and finding out

26:44SPEAKERif we can help them with whatever

26:46SPEAKERthat doesn't involve human contact.

26:48SPEAKERI mean, happy, we're happy to do.

26:50SPEAKER- Sure.

26:52SPEAKER- And then yeah, like the, like,

26:54SPEAKERhow do you make your home, like having a place

26:58SPEAKERwhere you don't have to worry about touching your face

26:59SPEAKERis really nice.

27:00SPEAKER- In your home?

27:01SPEAKER- You just touched your face just then.

27:03SPEAKER- Yes, I absolutely just scratched my nose.

27:05SPEAKERYou're talking about not having to, right, right, right.

27:07SPEAKER- Yeah, like not having to maintain eternal vigilance

27:09SPEAKERin the sanctity of your home will help you maintain sanity.

27:13SPEAKERSo like-

27:14SPEAKER- I've basically just been going straight to the sink

27:16SPEAKERas soon as I come in from having to go anywhere

27:18SPEAKERand washing my hands immediately.

27:20SPEAKER- Good policy.

27:21SPEAKER- But you know, there are these,

27:22SPEAKERsome of these studies are coming out in the last few days.

27:24SPEAKERSaying that the virus can survive on surfaces for days

27:28SPEAKERin some contexts.

27:29SPEAKERSo you gotta be careful about stuff you're bringing in too,

27:32SPEAKERwhich kind of leads me to wonder

27:34SPEAKERhow I should handle grocery shopping.

27:36SPEAKER'Cause that's the one thing I'm gonna have to go out for

27:38SPEAKERat some point.

27:39SPEAKER- So we've been buying, we've been having deliveries done.

27:43SPEAKERYou can still get prime now and Safeway delivery times

27:46SPEAKERin the Bay Area at least.

27:47SPEAKERWe're lucky that we live someplace that we can do that.

27:49SPEAKER- Yeah.

27:50SPEAKER- We haven't been buying a lot of fresh produce

27:53SPEAKERthat we can't like wash with soap and water.

27:55SPEAKER- Right.

27:56SPEAKER- We've been doing a lot of frozen vegetables.

27:59SPEAKERI bought some lettuce 'cause I hate having sandwiches

28:02SPEAKERwithout lettuce and I'll just take my chances.

28:06SPEAKERBut yeah, like anytime we bring packages in,

28:09SPEAKERwe're wiping them off with those Clorox wipes,

28:10SPEAKERwhich seem to be very effective against the virus.

28:13SPEAKER- Yeah.

28:16SPEAKER- And like same thing for when we go out or come in,

28:21SPEAKERwe go straight to the sink, wash hands, take off outerwear,

28:26SPEAKERwipe down all the handles and stuff that we use to get in

28:29SPEAKERwhen we come back in, wipe down the faucets and the soap

28:32SPEAKERand all like, we're a little crazy over here.

28:35SPEAKERI don't know if it's, we might be going too far.

28:37SPEAKER- I don't think you can be too crazy right now.

28:39SPEAKER- I mean, the goal is to maintain a threat free zone

28:46SPEAKERin the house, right?

28:48SPEAKERSpeaking of Clorox wipes and disinfectants and so forth.

28:51SPEAKER- Yeah.

28:52SPEAKER- I planned poorly.

28:54SPEAKER- Oh no.

28:55SPEAKER- We've got an okay supply of some like peroxide wipes

29:00SPEAKERand a few little tiny isopropyl alcohol prep pads,

29:04SPEAKERbut our bottle of isopropyl alcohol is all but gone.

29:07SPEAKER- Oh no.

29:08SPEAKER- And it is impossible to find right now.

29:10SPEAKERSo I've got-- - Do you have bleach?

29:14SPEAKER- I think we do.

29:16SPEAKER- So you can dilute that down and it's just as effective.

29:19SPEAKER- Really?

29:20SPEAKER- It's my understanding.

29:21SPEAKERYeah, like specifically those Clorox wipes

29:24SPEAKERthat are used bleach as the disinfecting agent

29:26SPEAKERare listed as one of the effective items.

29:29SPEAKER- I mean, the biggest reason I like the isopropyl alcohol

29:32SPEAKERis how fast it evaporates.

29:33SPEAKERSo I can use it on electronics a lot more confidently.

29:36SPEAKERSo I'm still trying to find a bottle

29:38SPEAKERand I was gonna ask you like, as of right now,

29:41SPEAKERmy method is that I have a bunch of bookmarks saved

29:43SPEAKERto the product page on, you know,

29:46SPEAKERWalgreens.com, CVS.com, Target, Safeway.

29:49SPEAKERLike I'm basically just checking their stock manually

29:52SPEAKERevery morning.

29:53SPEAKER- Yeah.

29:54SPEAKER- And obviously that's not doing much good.

29:55SPEAKERDo you have any other tips for like trying to catch it

29:57SPEAKERwhen it's around somewhere?

29:59SPEAKER- So there used to be services that would do this for you.

30:02SPEAKERI don't know that they would have fooled with isopropyl

30:04SPEAKERbecause it's kind of a low dollar item.

30:06SPEAKER- Yeah.

30:07SPEAKER- I think other than checking in or hoofing it

30:11SPEAKERto your like your bodega around the corner

30:12SPEAKERfrom your house or whatever,

30:14SPEAKERI feel like you're probably boned at this point

30:17SPEAKER'cause it seems like it's gonna be thin for a bit.

30:20SPEAKERThat'll restock though.

30:20SPEAKERWe make that here, so that shouldn't be a problem.

30:23SPEAKER- Yeah, all right, I'll just keep checking.

30:25SPEAKER- You can also use ethanol.

30:26SPEAKERSo you can use like Everclear

30:28SPEAKERif you have a liquor store near you.

30:30SPEAKER- Oh, interesting.

30:31SPEAKER- It needs to be a high proof.

30:33SPEAKERIt needs to be a high proof.

30:35SPEAKERIs it so you don't wanna use ethanol on your skin?

30:37SPEAKER- Yeah, and no additives, of course.

30:40SPEAKER- Yeah, the additives don't matter,

30:41SPEAKERbut like you can't, like the rum people comically,

30:46SPEAKERwe're having to tell people not to use, or vodka,

30:48SPEAKERwe're having to tell people not to use vodka

30:49SPEAKERto make hand sanitizer.

30:50SPEAKER- That's what I'm talking about.

30:52SPEAKERLike you want, like, 'cause Everclear is nothing

30:54SPEAKERbut ethanol and a little bit of water, right?

30:56SPEAKER- Yeah, so ethanol is 100% ethanol.

30:59SPEAKERIt's 100% pure grain alcohol.

31:01SPEAKER- And that's bad for your skin?

31:03SPEAKER- Well, it'll dry it out real bad.

31:04SPEAKER- Oh, okay.

31:06SPEAKERWould it evaporate off of electronics?

31:08SPEAKER- It should, yeah.

31:09SPEAKER- Okay, okay.

31:10SPEAKERI mean, the 10% bleach solution seems,

31:12SPEAKERso Apple was saying, use Clorox wipes on your phone.

31:15SPEAKER- Yeah, so I'm way out of the curve on that one.

31:18SPEAKERI've been using such wipes on my phone for two years,

31:22SPEAKERso my oleophobic coating is long gone.

31:24SPEAKER- Well, so the-

31:25SPEAKER- But they finally kind of pulled back on saying like,

31:28SPEAKERhey, don't use these things on your phone.

31:29SPEAKERIt's probably fine.

31:31SPEAKER- The, those wipes, just in general, for future reference,

31:38SPEAKERit doesn't help now, I realize,

31:40SPEAKERbut those wipes are super good for having around

31:42SPEAKERif you have kids,

31:44SPEAKERbecause when they get sick and are throwing up,

31:46SPEAKERyou can just follow them and wipe down every surface

31:48SPEAKERthat they touch with those,

31:50SPEAKERand we've managed to go through a couple of norovirus runs

31:53SPEAKERwhere my daughter got sick

31:54SPEAKERand neither of the rest of us managed to get sick.

31:56SPEAKER- Wow, that's impressive, okay.

31:58SPEAKER- I mean, we're also maniacs about it, so.

32:00SPEAKER- Yeah, that's, I mean, you just gotta protect yourself.

32:03SPEAKERYeah, I've talked about it

32:04SPEAKERon some of the giant bomb stuff before,

32:06SPEAKERbut I had a pretty bad bout with hand, foot, and mouth disease

32:10SPEAKERa little over a year ago that I caught

32:11SPEAKERfrom my year and a half old nephew.

32:15SPEAKER- Nice job.

32:16SPEAKER- As did everyone else in the house at Christmas.

32:19SPEAKER- We always manage to avoid that,

32:21SPEAKERand I consider myself blessed 'cause it sounds horrific.

32:24SPEAKER- It is, I mean, you know, it's not gonna kill you,

32:26SPEAKERbut it is an unbelievably unpleasant.

32:29SPEAKER- Yeah, so then I guess the last thing is what to do

32:32SPEAKERif you get sick and basically call your doctor.

32:35SPEAKERI think anybody listening to this

32:36SPEAKERis probably outside of the age range

32:38SPEAKERthat's in a high danger zone.

32:42SPEAKERIf you start experiencing shortness of breath,

32:44SPEAKERI think you're supposed to go to the ER,

32:45SPEAKERbut calling your doctor is the right choice

32:50SPEAKERwhether you're in a comorbidity type way or not.

32:57SPEAKERSo yeah, I think that's my sanity practices.

33:04SPEAKER- I feel like, I mean, I know people panicked, freaked out.

33:08SPEAKERWe were recording this on Friday morning, I guess.

33:11SPEAKER- Yeah.

33:12SPEAKER- Another good work from home tip

33:13SPEAKERis to know what day of the week it is.

33:15SPEAKER(laughing)

33:18SPEAKER- Yeah, you know.

33:20SPEAKER- You don't wanna pop in for the stand up

33:21SPEAKERon Saturday morning and be like,

33:22SPEAKER"Hey, where the hell is everybody in Slack?"

33:24SPEAKERAnd then, you know, and then you're the jerk.

33:29SPEAKERYeah, it's, I would say like generally be careful

33:34SPEAKERwith reading too much.

33:36SPEAKER- Yeah.

33:36SPEAKER- Like the day that all those accounts

33:40SPEAKERfrom Italian hospitals started coming out

33:42SPEAKERwhere they, when they ran out of respirators and ICU beds

33:44SPEAKERfor the number of people that were affected,

33:46SPEAKERI read those until about three o'clock in the morning

33:49SPEAKERand then didn't sleep for two days.

33:51SPEAKER- Yeah, those threads were definitely the inflection point

33:53SPEAKERfor me of like, we should probably think about

33:56SPEAKERstaying in our house from now on.

33:58SPEAKER- Oh, here's one.

34:00SPEAKERIn my Discord yesterday, there was a conversation

34:02SPEAKERabout what to do if your spouse or partner or parents

34:04SPEAKERor someone important to you

34:06SPEAKERisn't taking this seriously enough.

34:08SPEAKER- Okay, yeah.

34:10SPEAKER- My mom is immune compromised

34:11SPEAKERand we had this conversation, we had this last week.

34:13SPEAKERShe was like, "Oh, this isn't that big a deal."

34:16SPEAKERBut also they came out here last month

34:18SPEAKERand we're gonna cancel the trip

34:19SPEAKERbecause it was spreading in China.

34:23SPEAKERSo, you know, cognitive dissonance is a real bitch.

34:27SPEAKER- Yeah.

34:29SPEAKER- Like sharing stories, the panel that happened at UCSF

34:33SPEAKERmiddle of last week for you all,

34:36SPEAKERsome people posted notes from that

34:38SPEAKERwhich were maybe not entirely accurate

34:40SPEAKERfor what the panel's intent was,

34:46SPEAKERbut painted a stark picture about the risks of this disease.

34:51SPEAKERThe Atlantic has done a series of stories

34:55SPEAKERthat are really good and informative without being panicky

34:58SPEAKERand without being overly scary,

35:01SPEAKERbut that are, I think, realistic

35:03SPEAKERand show what the danger is

35:06SPEAKERand what the threat is in a realistic way.

35:09SPEAKERAnd yeah, I mean, try not to let your parents get on cruises

35:13SPEAKERif you can help it, I guess.

35:14SPEAKER- Yeah, that's pretty safe advice.

35:16SPEAKERI have a related question.

35:18SPEAKERI don't know if you're in a position to answer it.

35:21SPEAKERIn fact, this would have been a perfect question

35:24SPEAKERfor the epidemiologist if we had put that together.

35:28SPEAKERBut have you seen any advice about what to do

35:31SPEAKERif someone that you cohabitate with becomes infected?

35:36SPEAKER- Put them in one room, mostly by themselves.

35:38SPEAKER- Okay, I'm just trying to just avoid contact

35:41SPEAKERas much as possible, wipe down the bathroom.

35:44SPEAKER- Yeah.

35:44SPEAKER- Every three hours.

35:46SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, wipe down the bathroom.

35:50SPEAKERDon't, like, anytime you have contact with that person,

35:54SPEAKERwash your hands, have them wear a mask

35:57SPEAKERif they're in common areas.

35:59SPEAKER- Sure.

36:00SPEAKER- Just to try to catch as many of the droplets as you can.

36:04SPEAKER- Yeah.

36:06SPEAKERI'm sure it goes without saying,

36:07SPEAKERsleep in different rooms until further notice.

36:10SPEAKER- I mean, we're working on the assumption over here

36:13SPEAKERthat if one of us gets it,

36:14SPEAKERthe rest of us are probably gonna get it too,

36:16SPEAKER'cause it seems like inside the same house,

36:18SPEAKERit's pretty hard.

36:19SPEAKERLike, if you can afford a hotel,

36:22SPEAKERmaybe let the person who's sick stay home

36:25SPEAKERand the person who's not sick duck in and out.

36:27SPEAKER- Yeah, that's possible, although, I mean,

36:29SPEAKERsome of the research that's coming out

36:31SPEAKERabout how long people are contagious

36:33SPEAKERis gonna make that pretty impractical after a while.

36:36SPEAKER- I mean, most likely, given that people are contagious,

36:39SPEAKERat least in the last few days

36:41SPEAKERbefore you start developing symptoms,

36:43SPEAKERyou probably are already infected

36:44SPEAKERif somebody else in your house has--

36:46SPEAKER- That's, okay, that's--

36:47SPEAKER- Starts showing symptoms is my, I mean,

36:50SPEAKERso the takeaway from that UCSF thing

36:52SPEAKERis we really don't know a lot of stuff.

36:53SPEAKERWe don't know how long it lasts in the environment.

36:55SPEAKERWe don't know how long the incubation period is.

36:57SPEAKERWe don't know when people start being contagious

36:59SPEAKERinside the incubation period.

37:01SPEAKERAnd that combined, like,

37:04SPEAKERthe reason I was comforted

37:06SPEAKERwhen we started shutting things down is we don't,

37:07SPEAKERthere's enough stuff we don't know.

37:08SPEAKERWe're not able to test fast enough in the US.

37:11SPEAKERSo, like, we can't do containment strategies,

37:15SPEAKER'cause we don't know, like,

37:17SPEAKEROhio was saying they think there's probably 100,000 cases

37:20SPEAKERin the state of Ohio yesterday.

37:22SPEAKERLike, at that point, we have to do whatever we can socially

37:25SPEAKERto prevent spread of the disease, so.

37:29SPEAKER- Yeah, yes.

37:32SPEAKER- What's up?

37:33SPEAKERYeah!

37:33SPEAKERUh-oh, the last thing I wanted to talk about

37:35SPEAKERis that because of the way the supply chains work,

37:37SPEAKERthis is gonna take a while.

37:41SPEAKERIt's gonna take a while to come back from.

37:42SPEAKERLike, even if we manage to,

37:44SPEAKERthe disease stops spreading in May

37:46SPEAKERbecause of climate, of, you know, season changes,

37:50SPEAKERit's still gonna take a while to get supply chains

37:52SPEAKERworking again, and, you know,

37:54SPEAKERthe things that are easier to shut,

37:56SPEAKERit's easier to shut things down than to start them back up.

37:58SPEAKERSo, things are gonna be weird for a while.

38:01SPEAKERAs I told my daughter the other day,

38:03SPEAKERdon't expect to have blueberries whenever you want.

38:07SPEAKERSo, you know, it's--

38:09SPEAKER- A lot of ripple effects.

38:11SPEAKER- Yeah, we're gonna be feeling this for,

38:13SPEAKERprobably years would be my guess,

38:14SPEAKERbut at least months.

38:16SPEAKER- Yeah.

38:17SPEAKER- So.

38:18SPEAKER- Okay, then.

38:19SPEAKER- Yeah, real upbeat stuff.

38:21SPEAKER- Hey, sign up for our Patreon at TechPod.

38:24SPEAKERSorry, patreon.com/techpod.

38:27SPEAKER- It's out there.

38:29SPEAKERIt's getting there.

38:30SPEAKER- Yeah, and find your community of people.

38:33SPEAKERLike, this is, I posted a goofy video yesterday

38:35SPEAKERof this guy playing a Calliope,

38:37SPEAKERand the caption was day 87 of the quarantine,

38:42SPEAKERbut like, yeah.

38:43SPEAKER- Going around.

38:44SPEAKER- Yeah, learn to juggle, build models,

38:48SPEAKERorder some Gunpla, buy some Lego.

38:50SPEAKER- Yeah, I've definitely had that thought of,

38:53SPEAKERyou know, it's like, okay, I'm gonna be stuck in here

38:54SPEAKERfor some number of weeks.

38:55SPEAKERLike, seems like a good time

38:56SPEAKERto maybe get a steady exercise routine going.

38:59SPEAKER- Yeah.

39:00SPEAKER- You know, let's work on, read some books,

39:03SPEAKERwatch those movies that I've got laying there.

39:05SPEAKER- Yeah, watch every movie that won an Academy Award.

39:07SPEAKERGo through the, you know, you can,

39:09SPEAKERfor 10 bucks a month or something,

39:10SPEAKERyou can sign up for the Criterion Channel.

39:11SPEAKERYou have infinite good movies.

39:13SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, I honestly, yeah,

39:14SPEAKERI think like turning your attention toward a project or two,

39:16SPEAKERlike coming up with something you can really focus on

39:18SPEAKERthat would be beneficial long-term is probably

39:21SPEAKERa good way to go.

39:22SPEAKER- Yeah, do some home repair stuff.

39:23SPEAKERMake your living space more comfortable and better for you

39:26SPEAKERand, you know, try to turn this negative time

39:30SPEAKERinto something that's positive.

39:32SPEAKER- Yeah, learn a new skill.

39:33SPEAKERYou know, there's all kinds of stuff.

39:35SPEAKER- So yeah, this is, I guess that's it for us this week.

39:38SPEAKERWe'll be back next week.

39:39SPEAKERI think we're due for a Q&A show next week.

39:41SPEAKERSo send your questions to techpod@content.town.

39:45SPEAKERProbably an extra fertile time for questions to come in.

39:48SPEAKER- Yeah, and look, it doesn't have to be about coronavirus.

39:51SPEAKERWe have whatever you want.

39:52SPEAKERIt can be about technology, you know, send,

39:54SPEAKERwe're open to answering questions.

39:56SPEAKER- I might finally order a Mr., I might finally buy,

39:58SPEAKERI mean, I'm gonna be here for a while.

40:02SPEAKERI need a new tech project.

40:03SPEAKERThat seems like a good thing to mess with.

40:05SPEAKER- That sounds good.

40:06SPEAKERI mean, there's a bazillion,

40:08SPEAKERyou can work on your video game backlog.

40:09SPEAKERThere's all sorts of good stuff you can do.

40:11SPEAKER- Yeah.

40:12SPEAKER- Usually this is the part where I say,

40:13SPEAKERleave a review on iTunes.

40:14SPEAKERThat's the best thing you can do to help the pod,

40:15SPEAKERbut there's more now that you can do

40:18SPEAKERby going to patreon.com/techpod and signing up there.

40:21SPEAKERLike we said before, the rewards are,

40:24SPEAKERwe're gonna try some stuff and see what works

40:26SPEAKERand what doesn't.

40:27SPEAKERSo the rewards may change over time,

40:30SPEAKERbut I think we're stoked that you guys like the show

40:34SPEAKERand wanna help us keep doing this.

40:36SPEAKER- It's very flattering.

40:37SPEAKER- It's very exciting for us, so,

40:40SPEAKERand leaving a review is great too.

40:41SPEAKERDon't feel like just because, like if you're,

40:43SPEAKERdon't spend money that you would spend

40:46SPEAKERon something important on us.

40:47SPEAKERYou know, we don't, we're fine.

40:49SPEAKER- Definitely.

40:51SPEAKER- So yeah, thank you all and I guess we'll see you next week.

40:54SPEAKER- Yeah, be safe out there.

40:55SPEAKER- Bye, yeah, wash your hands.

40:57SPEAKERWash 'em real good, 20 seconds, sing the songs.

41:00SPEAKERBye.

41:01SPEAKER(upbeat music)

41:13SPEAKER(upbeat music continues)

41:43SPEAKER(upbeat music continues)
