00:00SPEAKERi had a 35 kill two solo win three and a half hour pubg game yesterday that's too much that's
00:07SPEAKERabout two and a half hours too much three three hours 35 people brad that was a single match no
00:12SPEAKERno no that was like oh that was like six or seven yeah i won two games a sitting yeah that was a
00:17SPEAKERsession a session was that last night yesterday afternoon okay and yet here you are at 7 45 in
00:23SPEAKERthe morning here i am ready to murder true ready to murder some podcast the truest uh the truest
00:28SPEAKERsweatpants tech pod that we've done to date i didn't take a shower this morning i didn't either
00:33SPEAKERi'm sitting here with half a cup of coffee my parents were here this last week in town and
00:37SPEAKERthey were they experienced what it's like to be me they had the will smith experience what is that
00:40SPEAKERlike uh no it's not great it's you get up in the morning you shovel a kid out the door child
00:47SPEAKERinvolved yeah you small business maybe brush your teeth by 11 o'clock like the mistake i've made is
00:53SPEAKERthat my work at home ritual is bad okay like instead of you're supposed to get up and like
00:58SPEAKERput your clothes on take a shower put your clothes on have coffee that's the norm chan routine no that
01:02SPEAKERnorm is that's norm claimed to do that i don't know how the norm does that and that all went
01:06SPEAKERout the window when i had when we had a kid yeah so now it's that i roll out of bed and i just
01:12SPEAKERlook at my phone i'm like uh i gotta answer these emails so i answer the emails and then i get on
01:18SPEAKERslack and i answer the slacks and by the time all that is done it's usually like 11 30 and i maybe
01:24SPEAKERhad a cup of tea or a cup of coffee and i'm i'm gross like i got i got the night sweats on me still
01:31SPEAKERand i gotta like then i'm like oh i gotta make lunch before i do this shower so then i ate lunch
01:38SPEAKERand then at like 215 when my daughter is like 20 minutes from coming home i'm like shit i gotta go
01:42SPEAKERtake a shower so she doesn't think i'm a hobo and then i go take a shower and then i you know i feel
01:47SPEAKERdecent sounds chaotic at three o'clock in the afternoon okay now i understand why do you feel
01:51SPEAKERthe urge to hop online and shoot people that's why i love shooting people so much it's so good
02:21SPEAKERwelcome to another episode of brad and will made a tech bot i'm will hello will
02:31SPEAKERhello brad hi that's me hi how are you i'm doing pretty good it's really early today it is this is
02:36SPEAKERmy normal podcasting hour last time is it really yeah seven o'clock is when we usually do still
02:40SPEAKERentitled last time we did a night podcast yeah that was too late now we're doing a super early
02:44SPEAKERmorning yeah this is we're all over the place this week it's time for q a it is we've done
02:49SPEAKERthree episodes these things come out of nowhere two of them were about the same thing but i feel
02:52SPEAKERlike it still fits we got a lot of questions about windows i feel like that was a lot of
02:56SPEAKERtalk about windows those were long episodes i uh i felt bad breaking it up into two episodes
03:01SPEAKERbut sometimes it was too long quantity over quality man yeah that's the no that was the
03:07SPEAKERother way people just want hours of stuff to put on and half listen to yeah i want something i can
03:12SPEAKERlisten to while i'm playing some diablo clone yeah um yeah these uh these i feel like every time one
03:17SPEAKERof these email episodes comes up it's like didn't we just do one of these but you know it's like one
03:20SPEAKERa month but we hey for other podcasters out there we had a real innovation last time yeah i sent an
03:25SPEAKERemail to ourselves what when we recorded the last email episode so we'd have a marker in the email
03:32SPEAKERfeed of where to stop reading emails that does that count as a life hack what is that i think
03:37SPEAKERthat's a pro tip because that is an exploit uh wait is game pro still around they aren't right
03:42SPEAKERno yeah then yeah it's a pro tip for sure okay wait do we get to make a little uh five-point
03:48SPEAKERillustrations of ourselves sure to slap on the reveal they made they made action figures man
03:53SPEAKERwhat yeah well a lot of those guys ended up being ended up at future and they're their friends oh
03:58SPEAKERwow and they had like like dan amrick had a dan electro action figure huh that they made i think
04:03SPEAKERas like an advertiser chach or something i don't know what it was for but like so is that a sign of
04:07SPEAKERlike some delusion of grandeur to make action figures of yourself no i think that's a sign
04:11SPEAKERof a marketing department with money that they had to burn okay that's how most things get done
04:16SPEAKERi think yeah um hey we have budget we got to do something i don't know what we get for a few
04:20SPEAKERthousand dollars we make some action yeah okay sure action figures is great what about funko pops
04:25SPEAKERuh do you want to read some emails sure all right how about well first of all what's what was the
04:30SPEAKERemail address again oh it's tech pod and content that town you're very good at this you know
04:34SPEAKERit's very that was a very smooth segue i knew it was something like that tech pod at content it's
04:40SPEAKERjust like the url but with an ad instead of a dot in one of the places yeah we're efficient like that
04:45SPEAKERyeah all right here we go the first email comes from royce hello royce i like that name it's a
04:50SPEAKERgood name sounds fancy yeah it sounds like it sounds like you should be bottled sounds like
04:56SPEAKERland owning european old money or something to me yeah like i'm out of the man i'm out of the
05:00SPEAKERsummer estate this this week but i wanted to ask you questions the country house well you know when
05:04SPEAKERwe named our daughter there was a question about whether we were choosing names that were appropriate
05:08SPEAKERfor our social status like you don't want to like i feel like if you name a kid porsche you're saying
05:14SPEAKERyou're making you're making billionaire claims sending a certain message yeah that's not that's
05:18SPEAKERnot what anyway fake it with your child's name until you make it i feel like that's like there's
05:22SPEAKERa white trash you know billionaire scale there you gotta be careful with yeah okay all right
05:28SPEAKERemail from royce uh just listen to your great episode on nas i meant to admit the word great
05:33SPEAKERthere well i read this before in my mind i was like okay when you read that don't say great say
05:39SPEAKERwell now you've really called attention to it so i'm gonna i'm gonna start totally smooth
05:42SPEAKERlet's start over just listen to your episode on nasus uh it came at a good time because i'm
05:47SPEAKERcurrently ripping all of my dvds to a plex server for easier and remote access i'm not the most tech
05:53SPEAKERsavvy person but luckily plex has a pretty easy ui and i'm currently working with an off-the-shelf
05:57SPEAKERtower cpu however i'm hoping to have something that uses substantially less power and that i
06:02SPEAKERwon't have to worry about leaving up 24 7 upon some research it seems somewhat common for people
06:07SPEAKERto set up a raspberry pi as a dedicated plex server with an external hard drive do you have
06:12SPEAKERany opinions on this and then he links to um a thing on amazon he says i'm currently thinking
06:18SPEAKERthis hundred dollar uh raspberry pi 4 kit on amazon with an eight terabyte spinning disk usb
06:23SPEAKERdrive might be adequate so he wants to know if basically that setup is and this this raspberry
06:28SPEAKERpi kit he linked to is basically just it's like the pi uh an enclosure power supply sd card it's
06:34SPEAKERjust sort of the all-in-one get started kit so i haven't used the brand new the newest raspberry
06:40SPEAKERpi which is supposed to be pretty beefy yes i don't know if it's transcode video beefy yeah
06:45SPEAKERthat's where i maybe get hung up on this yeah so it might be okay i would say probably anything
06:50SPEAKERprior to a raspberry pi 4 is going to be pushing your luck in terms of what you can transcode
06:55SPEAKERi i would think that's probably fine uh if you're actually also i should point out um the
07:00SPEAKERif i'm not mistaken the pi 4 is the first one with usb 4 that's true i mean i'm sorry USB 3 ports
07:05SPEAKERyeah um but i mean that shouldn't matter for video because the videos are pretty low
07:09SPEAKERbit right that rate is not that high um so so yeah the gate for that is going to be
07:14SPEAKERhow much CPU you have i mean like whether whether you've ripped the files that you're putting on
07:20SPEAKERthe plex server in a way that they'll play natively on whatever devices you're using so
07:25SPEAKERif you're using android devices you're kind of fine with whatever because they can play a ton
07:28SPEAKERof stuff they can handle soft subtitles all that uh for ios and roku and whatever other set-top
07:34SPEAKERbox apple tv whatever set-top boxes you're using including like the ones that are built
07:38SPEAKERinto your 4k tv you're going to want to go to plexus um uh codex page and find out what
07:46SPEAKERlike which clients support soft subtitles because you like ideally if you're going through the
07:50SPEAKERhassle of ripping all your discs you don't want to do things like burn subtitles in you want to
07:53SPEAKERbe able to use the soft subtitle so you can turn them on and off um but if you're using a low power
07:58SPEAKERserver you know if you if you want to watch a video with a movie with subtitles on and they're
08:06SPEAKERsoft subtitles and your viewing client doesn't support soft subtitles which a lot of the ios
08:12SPEAKERstuff doesn't and some of the like consoles even don't yeah you you need to have enough horsepower
08:19SPEAKERto re-encode that video on the fly with those subtitles burned in so um your mileage may vary
08:26SPEAKERi would think a pi 4 would probably be fine it's probably fine for dvd res especially um
08:30SPEAKERit's a quad core i think it's 1.5 gigahertz but it's still arm right it is arm but it's like one
08:35SPEAKERof the newer yeah and it's probably and and also plex has hardware transcode support built in now
08:42SPEAKERfor specific chipsets i don't know if it supports the arm stuff i know that intel
08:47SPEAKERum the intel integrated uh video transcode hardware is now supported if you're on the
08:54SPEAKERright platform so if you're on like debbie and linux and using the right kernel and you flip
08:59SPEAKERsome flags then you can you can get hardware transcode which will solve that problem entirely
09:03SPEAKERyeah so you may i guess my point is you may be better off looking at like a low power intel
09:07SPEAKERsystem like a nuke or one of those atom sticks or something like that you say it nuke nuke in
09:13SPEAKERmy head it's always nuke oh man it's like it's like the robocop drugs you gotta get that nuke
09:18SPEAKERbro okay now i'm now i'm on board yeah i get it um yeah the uh the video transcode issue aside like
09:24SPEAKERa pi 4 and a usb hard drive is perfectly fine it's just a real quick and dirty ness kind of
09:29SPEAKERstuff i have a good backup strategy yes that's i mean yes you should not make that your sole
09:34SPEAKERrepository of that data if you care about that data but yeah i mean just for serving files on
09:38SPEAKERa network that is totally fine i mean and honestly you can get real fancy if you want to do that and
09:43SPEAKERlike set up a second one at a friend's house and sink those sink those pools with each other
09:49SPEAKERit's a little diy cloud storage yeah i i really want to buy a pi 4 and i should have already i
09:54SPEAKERjust it's so stupid but i'm hung up on that dumb usb-c power bug they ran into with that thing so
10:00SPEAKERi'm waiting till they get a revision out there that fixes that i used my pi 4 money to buy a
10:04SPEAKERub key the other day that's probably a smarter use of that money uh but uh let's see um how about
10:16SPEAKERspeaking of infosec we did that infosec episode yeah i mentioned the ub key i was really pleased
10:22SPEAKERthat nobody yelled at us i i nothing makes me more nervous than doing stories about infosec and
10:28SPEAKERbeing terrified that i will mess it up strong opinions in that crowd yeah and and and a uh
10:33SPEAKERthe high high consequence for failure or uh you know well and also wrong can be quite damaging
10:40SPEAKERand the best practices aren't always intuitive yeah that's the other thing about that space so
10:44SPEAKERanyway for example you might think your netflix account is well protected and yet they might it
10:50SPEAKERturns out it isn't they might keep charging you over and over i i'm uh customer service is
10:55SPEAKERresolved they escalated to their security team complaining on twitter always works this is i
10:59SPEAKERalways feel skeezy i hate that that's so effective i've never had to do it but like i guess if you
11:03SPEAKERhave no other choice you well so i do you want to tell do you get the short people were alluding to
11:08SPEAKERyeah the tldr is that somebody kept just like um canceling my netflix account basically without
11:16SPEAKERme doing it uh when i called netflix to find out what was happening they didn't they acted like i
11:22SPEAKERwas the person was logged in when they were doing it which is would was very worrisome to me because
11:27SPEAKERi use single password you know unique passwords for each service it was a really long password
11:32SPEAKERit had symbols and numbers and digits it wasn't shared with anybody like i hadn't broken any of
11:36SPEAKERthe rules so either when you when you break yeah well yeah go ahead there's a problem on their end
11:39SPEAKERor one of my machines was compromised when you break down the ways that people could get access
11:44SPEAKERto that account on your end they're all pretty terrifying it was real thin somebody has either
11:48SPEAKERlike breached your password vault or they've got a key logger installed on your machine or something
11:54SPEAKERsome in some way they're getting access to stuff in a really frightening way well it could have
11:59SPEAKERalso been like 10 years ago they don't sign people out when you change passwords by default okay so
12:04SPEAKERalso 10 years ago i had a bad password on that before i started using one password wow so like
12:09SPEAKERif somebody's been sitting there logged in for a decade but they didn't show up in the recent
12:14SPEAKERactivity list interesting so my netflix account also got compromised four or five years ago really
12:21SPEAKERi also used a terrible password i think it was somebody in germany that signed into it i'm
12:24SPEAKERhijacked it yeah of course they signed in they changed the password and then they like upgraded
12:28SPEAKERthe plan to whatever the most well that's nice of them at that that time it was super easy so yeah
12:33SPEAKERi can't remember if i live chatted or called somebody but they fixed it in like five minutes
12:36SPEAKERwell so i did the live chat and the customer service representative was so profoundly unhealthy
12:40SPEAKERhelpful that that i flew into a rage and i complained on twitter like an asshole exercise
12:45SPEAKERthe nuclear option and and debased yourself look i'm not proud to say this at one point i was like
12:51SPEAKERlook is my is my only i was like can you escalate me to a manager manager and they're like no i'll
12:56SPEAKERjust i was like or or what i said was can you escalate me to a manager or are you just going
13:02SPEAKERto send me to somebody else on your tier and they're going to act like they're your manager
13:06SPEAKERand they were like i i can't tell you that wow and i was like well shit so my only option is to
13:10SPEAKERgo complain to a hundred thousand people on twitter and he was like no i can't comment on that i was
13:15SPEAKERlike okay here we go let's dance oh wait you actually told him that yeah i told the customer
13:19SPEAKERservice i was like i was like look this is going to be a problem for you exercise some real care
13:24SPEAKERand energy look i was i was here's the thing i know they train customer service people not to
13:30SPEAKERsay not to apologize for a mistake on the part of the service i know that's part of the drill yeah
13:36SPEAKERbut sometimes the service is at fault if you had said i'm sorry i'm happy you're i'm sorry you're
13:41SPEAKERhaving this problem i would have been like 90 percent less pissed sure yeah anyway so info sec
13:47SPEAKERyeah it's it's remarkable how many people don't understand this that getting people to do what you
13:52SPEAKERwant so like everything to do with how you treat them yeah instead of flying into a rage of people
13:57SPEAKERyeah uh oh yeah are you saying i shouldn't have flown into a race or they should have flown into
14:00SPEAKERa range saying some politeness goes a long way yeah there you go stuff anyway uh all right we
14:05SPEAKERgot a couple of info sec emails here to go through oh there's one from edwin i'm surprised you guys
14:11SPEAKERdidn't touch on unsecured public wi-fi and vpn during the recent info sec episode oh that's a
14:16SPEAKERreally good point yeah um i mean vpns are useful especially if you're doing things that you don't
14:21SPEAKERwant necessarily tied to your ip address that you're on um i most of the web these days because
14:28SPEAKERit's all ssl encrypted i'm much less worried about the security problems of unencrypted wi-fi
14:35SPEAKERat this point to the point that i don't use vpns when i'm really airport wi-fi anymore kidding
14:40SPEAKERwell also often you have to put in a password now for airport wi-fi i mean like well that's
14:45SPEAKERnot going to stop a malicious like an attacker from getting on there as well no but ssl is pretty
14:50SPEAKERreliable pretty robust yeah um i mean it's not it's not universal it isn't universal but like
14:55SPEAKERall of the imagine what was the last time you logged into a website that wasn't ssl encrypted
15:00SPEAKERat this point uh about a month ago yeah i mean actually they do exist this is this is an outlier
15:06SPEAKERat this point i shouldn't this sounds like i'm scaremongering here because it was such an outlier
15:09SPEAKERwhen it happened that i was like it's 2020 what the fuck are you people it's i don't want to put
15:14SPEAKERany small businesses on blast that i patronize but i mean it's the place i get my haircut it
15:19SPEAKERtakes like five minutes they get an ssl certificate now let me do it automatically
15:23SPEAKERi'm just going to complain about this real quick they have they now have like an online kind of
15:26SPEAKERappointment portal that's really nice and i was like okay cool i can make my haircut appointments
15:31SPEAKERonline now i go there um they not only require you to input a credit card address before you can even
15:37SPEAKERmake the appointment but then i looked at the address bar and sure enough there was not there
15:41SPEAKERwas no https like chrome through the hey this is an unprotected website maybe you don't do your
15:47SPEAKERcredit card here no i didn't i absolutely did not i just went back to calling them on the phone
15:50SPEAKERbecause like you're expecting me to put my credit card number into an unsecured website there's
15:54SPEAKERservices for that why do you have why do you not have a certificate like my place just pays somebody
15:59SPEAKERelse like open table for hair just whoever set it up yes didn't know what they're doing it's it's
16:04SPEAKERunfortunate but anyway like you're you're right most most like even content sites yeah like the
16:08SPEAKERnew york times giant bomb is ssl encrypted i think at this point right seems like it is probably
16:15SPEAKERyeah i didn't get an error when i typed a password the other day sure yeah so it's i feel like it's i
16:20SPEAKERfeel like the vpn like those are special use things for special to be clear for anybody who doesn't
16:25SPEAKERknow when you're logging to a vpn it's going to be encrypting 100 of the traffic you send through
16:29SPEAKERthat pipe so you're protected on anything you do if you're on like an airport or like a public like
16:34SPEAKERa starbucks wi-fi or something but but i mean the problem with like the problem with stuff like like
16:38SPEAKERa lot of the free vpns they're free vpns they're paid vpns and then there's stuff like tor the
16:44SPEAKERonion router yeah um which is a different kind of vpn and kind of anonymizes your traffic a little
16:49SPEAKERbit i feel afraid even talking about or going near that subject why it's just so skeezy man i mean
16:55SPEAKERit's the dark web well yeah i mean the the problem with tor is that i think i at least the last time
17:00SPEAKERi used it in order to use into order to connect somebody else's node you had to open up your end
17:04SPEAKERas a node and the kind of things people use tor for are things i don't want to be associated with
17:09SPEAKERin any way shape or form yes um which is unfortunate because tor is an incredibly valuable
17:15SPEAKERservice i'm talking about like child pornography and drugs and stuff like that and and uh
17:21SPEAKERassassinations yeah like bomb making and yes all of the shit that used to be on usenet and irc back
17:26SPEAKERin the old days um so so yeah like i i pay for a vpn i still pay for a vpn it's it's fine yeah like
17:37SPEAKERi don't i don't i don't think it's as necessary part of your your security toolkit as it was
17:42SPEAKERsay 10 years ago when not everything was total encrypted on the web um i don't know if i've
17:46SPEAKERmentioned before i actually set up a the vpn on my edge router oh so you can so i can vpn to my house
17:52SPEAKERthat's nice which does not accomplish the things that most people want to use a vpn for which is
17:55SPEAKERanonymizing your traffic well but it means you can like manage your server and your server and stuff
18:00SPEAKERlike that my house and yeah i can access everything on my land but also another nice side benefit of
18:04SPEAKERthat is that i can do what edwin is talking about when i'm at the airport or whatever and like and
18:09SPEAKERlike you said it's it's kind of maybe security overkill at this point but like you know if i
18:13SPEAKERhop on the airport wi-fi on my phone i just immediately connect to my home vpn yeah and
18:18SPEAKERand again i'm not like anonymizing or any of the primary kind of most people's use cases for vpn but
18:23SPEAKERit does give me that it gives me that peace of mind of like okay anybody else on this airport
18:27SPEAKERwi-fi can't try to touch anything i'm doing with my financial information here i did find out that
18:33SPEAKERyou can use the vpn to bypass things that are blocked from networks too so like i was on a gogo
18:40SPEAKERwireless satellite internet connection a few weeks ago and they didn't let me connect to discord
18:45SPEAKERbecause they viewed it as like a an av like a video conferencing app not a chat app right
18:50SPEAKERso i just vpned in and and connected the vpn and i was able to discord all i wanted okay so to be
18:56SPEAKERclear like in my example when i'm vpning to my house like the discord is or whoever is seeing my
19:01SPEAKERip as my home ip right yeah oh yeah yeah that's exactly that is i didn't even think about that
19:05SPEAKERthat's a nice way to circumvent it's a life hack some some annoying stuff like that all right what
19:11SPEAKERdo we got let's start some more cues into a's here's another one from scott hello scott uh a
19:17SPEAKERcouple weeks ago you mentioned using facial recognition on your phone as a method of security
19:22SPEAKERi personally know of two people who have been at a bar or party where they have passed out and had
19:26SPEAKERsomeone use the facial recognition on their phone to open the phone and use venmo to empty out a
19:31SPEAKERbank account how the hell did somebody use the phone when you're unconscious the reason why i'll
19:36SPEAKERnever use facial recognition on my phone okay there's a lot of there's a lot to unpack here
19:41SPEAKERyeah a passing out in public probably the bigger security problem yeah be careful yeah don't don't
19:48SPEAKERdo that no if you want to get blackout drunk do it in the privacy of your own home maybe also
19:54SPEAKERwell i i'm old and have a different perspective on this now than i probably did when i was still
19:58SPEAKERdrinking that much sure um and is the facial recognition lenient enough to work like with
20:04SPEAKERpeople's eyes closed i assumed eyes like the the some something about the dimensions if you're like
20:09SPEAKERyour iris and pupil probably factor into the biometrics you have to make eye contact with
20:14SPEAKERthe iphone so they would literally have to like pull your eyelids open yeah like my daughter tries
20:17SPEAKERto unlock the phone so she can play games and she does the thing where she just jams it up in your
20:20SPEAKERface and as long as you don't look at it it never unlocks it's another life hack yeah um but it's
20:26SPEAKERalso kind of hard not to look at it because it's the most interesting thing in my line of sight at
20:29SPEAKERany given moment sure you just you see it there and you're like i love that thing yeah um but i
20:34SPEAKERalso hate it it's a problem uh i i if i was doing serious stuff for a living or places where i was
20:44SPEAKERconcerned about my physical security i would not use face or fingerprint yeah scanning yeah because
20:49SPEAKERi think we talked about before like people have lifted fingerprints off of surfaces and use them
20:54SPEAKERto unlock phones that's not foolproof either we did that it tested just uh um i think i feel like
20:59SPEAKERscotch tape and uh and graphite was enough to do it wow yeah um we might have had to make a mold
21:05SPEAKERi can't remember i don't know how valid this is uh but i saw like a kind of semi-viral tweet going
21:10SPEAKERaround yesterday that somebody had devised a way to photograph your face print the lower half of
21:18SPEAKERyour face onto an n95 breathing mask i know daniel let's let's get okay does that yeah i know her
21:24SPEAKERshe's great and then specifically the pitch was hey in the middle of a viral outbreak like the
21:28SPEAKERcoronavirus you can customize your breathing masks to continue unlocking your phone because
21:33SPEAKERi don't know if that actually works though or not i don't know if it works or not i don't know if
21:36SPEAKERi don't know if there's any 3d depth sensing irr stuff going on that would the mask would defeat
21:41SPEAKERbecause it's just a flat surface well but it's not a flat surface it's domed it would replicate
21:46SPEAKERthe depth of your face or facial features like if you look at my face like i have beard obscure
21:52SPEAKERobscuring my bone structure i i don't know um i we like when the face recognition stuff came out
21:59SPEAKERwith ios and android we heard lots of reports of like uh siblings and children working because
22:06SPEAKERtheir face structure their bone structure was similar enough their face face looks similar
22:09SPEAKERenough to their their relatives interesting um like i feel like any of the biometric stuff like
22:15SPEAKERlook if you're really concerned about security get one of those nfc ub keys and use that to sign into
22:19SPEAKERyour phone use that to sign into your accounts like that that's that's if you have real security needs
22:25SPEAKERthat's what you need is a hardware dongle and a password and throw that thing down the nearest
22:30SPEAKERstorm drain if somebody takes your phone and is trying to get into it bite it nah sure swallow it
22:36SPEAKERyeah no no they can get that back that was actually only the first half of his email oh here's
22:42SPEAKERthe other half but wait there's more uh in the same episode brad mentioned that a credit card
22:46SPEAKERcompany of his doesn't use two-factor authentication this doesn't surprise me as there
22:52SPEAKERare large parts of the banking and credit card systems that are still running on computers and
22:55SPEAKERsoftware built in the 80s the mortgage system is even worse the system used by huge banks like
23:02SPEAKERwalsh fargo and city bank uh was actually written in cobol oh great and is so bad that all the banks
23:10SPEAKERservicing centers talk to each other to find ways around all the problems they run into trying to
23:15SPEAKERwork new regulations into an ancient system i always smirk when i use my 2020 laptop to log
23:20SPEAKERinto a system that doesn't recognize a mouse and looks like it would be futuristic in the movie
23:24SPEAKERhackers it sounds like he works in this industry remember remember in 2998 when they had to get all
23:31SPEAKERthe lords of cobol who knew how to cobol program back in to fix the y2k bug yeah they had to like
23:38SPEAKERpull all these people out of retire yeah you know anything about that language like it's just a very
23:42SPEAKERearly primitive machine language it's what ibm used it's not a machine language it's a it's a
23:48SPEAKERi believe it's a higher level than that but i don't know anything about it it was the thing
23:52SPEAKERthat if i wanted to take programming in like seventh grade okay that's it was either that
23:57SPEAKERor fortran is what they would have taught us hey interest someone kind of more simplified than like
24:02SPEAKERc well obviously i think it's more specialized i think it was from ibm mainframes i see so it was
24:07SPEAKERfor data processing like large-scale data processing huh it's kind of what i think people
24:10SPEAKERwould use python for but i'm sure people will send in questions for the next one to correct me
24:14SPEAKERon this because i don't know sure um the uh i don't want to get into specifics of what my
24:21SPEAKERbank uses for two-factor authentication because it's bad yeah um and i don't want to tell everybody
24:25SPEAKERwhat bank i use everybody every bank i've ever used has had a non-standard two-factor
24:32SPEAKERauthentication it's crazy so they don't use otp they don't use ue keys they don't use the google
24:36SPEAKERauthenticator whatever that spec is um if you always like text you a four-digit code or something
24:42SPEAKERterrible like the the very accounts that you most want to protect are the least secure yeah by
24:47SPEAKERnature and it's just it's infuriating well and also your check comes with the like your printed
24:52SPEAKERchecks have the information needed to like extract money from accounts for somebody who is even this
24:58SPEAKERanyway thanks for problem yeah this is why we shall go to bitcoin just uh just get that ethereum
25:04SPEAKERrolling and we're going to use that to buy our groceries from newegg just throw this on the list
25:09SPEAKERof ways the financial industry screws everybody else over yeah um it would be nice if more people
25:15SPEAKERsupported two-factor authentication in a industry standard way yes cannot agree more okay josh from
25:21SPEAKERbrooklyn uh did you guys ever use the he entitled this email sick cd drive oh uh did you guys ever
25:27SPEAKERuse a cd writer that etched the top of the cd with an image that existed right hp laser rights
25:33SPEAKERi heard about them as a kid and always wanted to use one instead of writing with a sharpie on my
25:37SPEAKERnew mix cds hold on it was called is that just an hp thing or i remember right i assume you had to
25:46SPEAKERflip it over in the oh sure yeah i can't remember what it was called i assume they just used some
25:51SPEAKERkind of like different type of like photochemical covering that they could burn with a laser yeah
25:59SPEAKERthat was exactly it was like it was like a single tone okay uh so you're not gonna get colored top
26:05SPEAKERyou didn't get colors but it would just kind of like give a tone color on color yeah uh label on
26:11SPEAKERthe top i had one of those drives did you actually use that feature twice okay because you know what
26:18SPEAKERusually it's like pain usually i would burn the disc and then i would be like well okay this one
26:24SPEAKERis blah blah blah write it on the top of the sharpie yeah and then chuck it back on the
26:27SPEAKERspindle yes because i don't remember it's funny i have no idea what i used optical burners for
26:35SPEAKERonce i stopped burning audio cds yeah because it's not like we were i i you know that's not true i
26:41SPEAKERdid burn a bunch of mp3 cds to like to like share music with friends totally back in the back in
26:45SPEAKERthose heady days that and just like backing up data occasionally kind of if you needed to even
26:49SPEAKERthose are terrible way to back things up i i remember once when i changed pcs and i was moving
26:54SPEAKERthe hard drive from one computer to another i and and downloads were problematic because i was on dsl
27:00SPEAKERi feel like i probably backed up all of the steam installed games to see these and then before like
27:07SPEAKERextra but once external like once you could get a cheap usb external hard drive or thumb drive it
27:11SPEAKERwas like i'm done with this yes this is terrible i think i've got an unopened spindle of like 50
27:17SPEAKEReither see they're probably dvdr's if i had to guess but i'm pretty sure i've got like a stack of
27:22SPEAKERblank disks that will never be used in a box somewhere well so frank sefaldi of the
27:29SPEAKERvideo game history museum uh and jason scott we're both talking of the internet archive
27:37SPEAKERwe're both talking about the reliability of old media like floppy disks and old cdr's and we're
27:43SPEAKERreaching the 20-year period on cdr's so they're going to start presumably the dyes have started
27:48SPEAKERbreaking down because um you have like i guess probably like the sake of cd some of those first
27:54SPEAKERcd rom the companies would be sending out presumably yeah you know beta versions of games
27:58SPEAKERon on uh written i mean you know like all through all through yeah through like the ps2 era at game
28:05SPEAKERspot we were getting burned discs of preview builds and even review builds of stuff all the
28:10SPEAKERtime oh i got burned discs from ea for pc games until i left maximum pc yeah um the that stuff uh
28:17SPEAKERthe floppy disks they're starting to get bad sectors on baby discs from the 80s they break
28:22SPEAKERdown even in storage seems like they do i mean also they're magnetic so i guess that's subject to
28:28SPEAKERcosmic rays and corruption yeah well but also presumably the people who are storing like people
28:35SPEAKERput floppy disks in their attic and their garage and the places that are not necessarily climate
28:39SPEAKERcontrolled so yes you know if they get hot and they're less like they're more likely to lose
28:44SPEAKERlose data and stuff like that uh all right that's a good segue to this email from jason
28:50SPEAKERuh speaking of preserving uh your digital property lightscribe is what it was called
28:55SPEAKERyes right okay now i remember that what a cool ridiculous useless gimmick i mean
29:03SPEAKERthe first time we got that and we were like this is so cool yeah and then we realized you have to
29:06SPEAKERbe able to draw in order to make any use of it at all sure yeah also how much you know it takes five
29:11SPEAKERseconds to write a name with a sharpie versus probably 20 minutes pretty slow make a make an
29:16SPEAKERimage and flip the disc and yeah okay all right uh jason says uh during your nas episode you
29:23SPEAKERmentioned having all of your media music and movies all digital and able to watch anywhere
29:28SPEAKERmy question is what do you recommend for digitizing cds dvds and blu-rays uh and what
29:32SPEAKERdo you store them on i have a four terabyte usb hard drive uh can this be used or do i need an
29:37SPEAKERass for this no you definitely don't need an ass like this you can even if you're just gonna back
29:41SPEAKERthat stuff up you can throw it on any old drive but the bigger question here is he's asking how
29:46SPEAKERto actually like extract and then uh just digitize in different ways um i haven't ripped in an audio
29:55SPEAKERcd in probably 10 years wow really so i just redid all of mine really like a few months ago
30:01SPEAKERwhen i embarked on a quest to rebuild my entire music library and flack yeah how would you use eac
30:07SPEAKERyes so yeah exact audio copy is still from what i could tell the best thing uh out there as far
30:14SPEAKERas i could tell okay it's pretty i mean it's not the easiest thing to set up no but it is very
30:19SPEAKERrobust and it and more most importantly it tells you if you're gonna have an error like a lot of
30:23SPEAKERlike you know ito the problem with itunes always was uh that it that it would just let her rip and
30:29SPEAKERif you had a skip or something it would just try to fix it as best it could it wouldn't say hey
30:33SPEAKERthere's gonna be a problem in the middle of you know so you wouldn't get to like tangerine on
30:37SPEAKERled zeppelin 3 and be like what the hell is this horrible sound right yeah um yeah like eac will
30:43SPEAKERvery exhaustively tell you if there's anything wrong with the disc but again it's like it's
30:46SPEAKERpretty technical and detailed to set up in terms of like you know you have to you have to tell it
30:52SPEAKERwhich encoder you want to use where the file where the executable for that is located like give it a
30:55SPEAKERbunch of command switches for quality and stuff like that like it's not super user-friendly yeah
30:59SPEAKERbut once you get it set up it's pretty easy just throw discs in and go for you know for those meat
31:05SPEAKERpuppets cds that i may or may not ever actually listen to again well but i mean but yeah the nice
31:10SPEAKERthing is once you do set that up there's not it's not like ripping movies where you have to kind of
31:13SPEAKEReyeball it every single time so as far as movies go i i just got rid of all my old dvds i never
31:18SPEAKERbothered to rip them oh i just donated them instead because they're filthy standard definition i don't
31:24SPEAKERwant that shit wow so i can't weigh in on how to rip dvds um specifically so i use a piece of
31:32SPEAKERsoftware called make mkv yeah so that's what i use for blu-rays but yeah i wasn't sure if that also
31:36SPEAKERworked for it works everything yeah well okay um so you basically with make mkv you pull off um
31:43SPEAKERthe way dvds are structured is like each each dvd is a container and the container has some video
31:50SPEAKERand some audio and some subtitles and then sometimes some extra stuff yeah there's there's
31:54SPEAKERlike menu files and it's all like the player interprets the menu program yeah to kind of
32:00SPEAKERfigure out how to play the point being like the the files on the disc are not one-to-one with
32:03SPEAKERthe videos you would want to watch that's exactly it it's not like there's just like movie dot mpg
32:07SPEAKERright you can't just like go in file explorer and windows and like drag a video file off the disc
32:11SPEAKERbecause they're all broken up across multiple files and they're very it's very arcane well
32:15SPEAKERbut make mkv makes that stuff visible well somewhat visible um it doesn't necessarily
32:20SPEAKERlabel everything for you though that's the problem you have to find it yeah uh dvds are a lot easier
32:25SPEAKERthan blu-rays because there's a lot fewer extra things on blu-rays and like the data is structurally
32:29SPEAKERless complicated yeah um the biggest challenge you have with dvds is like sometimes there's two
32:34SPEAKERversions of the movie on the same disc there's like a matted cropped version for four by three
32:38SPEAKERtbs and then a 16 by nine one um you basically the process is open mkv look at the disc pick the
32:47SPEAKERcontent that you want out of the disc save that to your hard drive and then point handbrake at
32:52SPEAKERthat video and and what make mkv does is literally put some matryoshka mkv file with all of the it
32:59SPEAKERdoesn't recompress anything so all of the low low compression mpeg 2 dolby digital 5.1 or gts audio
33:08SPEAKERis just saved to your hard drive so you'll have like a seven gig file it's a perfect
33:12SPEAKERreplication of what was on the disc yeah and then you point handbrake at that seven gig file and you
33:16SPEAKERsay okay turn this into h.264 h.265 or or you just save the whole thing because you're a maniac if
33:21SPEAKERyou're bawling out of control like i am god you just ripping hold blu-rays you stop before the
33:27SPEAKERhandbrake stop wow it's ridiculous i know that's just that's that's okay yeah they're huge like a
33:36SPEAKERlet's say a full-length movie ways can be 50 gigs so different blu-rays use different compression
33:42SPEAKERyeah algorithms so it can vary but i would say it's probably like 30 average like 30 gig a movie
33:47SPEAKER35 for like a two-hour movie it's it's ridiculous i'm gonna have to start compressing stuff at some
33:52SPEAKERpoint i mean i love the idea of having like the literal blu-ray movie at the exact same quality
33:58SPEAKERwell so if you're gonna do that you can just keep the iso and then use i think i want to say cody
34:03SPEAKERlets you just navigate the menus okay i don't know if it does it for blu-ray definitely does it for
34:07SPEAKERblu-ray playback on pc is terrible or it's i mean you basically have to buy playback software like
34:12SPEAKERvlc doesn't handle it properly and you can't just like i can't throw my terminator 2 blu-ray into
34:17SPEAKERthe pc and just play it and so you do have to extract the mkv that way but whatever i so i like
34:24SPEAKERto pull um english language tracks all the english subtitles uh and that way you get director
34:32SPEAKERcommentary it's just because i love a good director commentary yes uh you can also go through really
34:36SPEAKEReasily and find like extra features and stuff like that so if you want to get like the making
34:39SPEAKERof featurettes and all that it's easy to do yeah make mkv will break everything up by what they
34:43SPEAKERcall title which like a title is essentially a video program like it's the movie or it's the
34:48SPEAKERbehind scenes feature or it's you know it's it's what you would watch as a video from start to
34:51SPEAKERfinish on on the disc and a player but sometimes it's like the fbi warning sure yeah yeah it might
34:57SPEAKERbe a trailer it might be it's a self-contained video the reason i bring that up though is it
35:00SPEAKERcan get confusing if you were to put in let's say a japanese animation yes like a foreign language
35:07SPEAKERfilm like animation like frequently you will get like two or even three titles side by side that
35:13SPEAKERare all three the same size they're all like 27 gig or 35 gig and it doesn't go to any length
35:20SPEAKERto tell you what the differences are you just have to eyeball like okay this one has the english and
35:26SPEAKERa bunch of european language tracks and this one has only english and japanese so the difference
35:30SPEAKERmust be that this one has the credits all in japanese you know what i mean like pixar does
35:35SPEAKERcredits in french english and spanish for north america the point i'm making is that make mkv does
35:40SPEAKERnot tell you anything about what the differences are so you really have to just sort of try to
35:44SPEAKERintuit which one is the one you actually want i realize it's kind of a mess i realized a few weeks
35:49SPEAKERago that i ripped the french version of monsters university but it still has the english audio
35:55SPEAKERtrack right but i was watching all the signage even like the handwritten signs in the world
36:00SPEAKERokay i was gonna ask so i am pixar i'm sure has enough attention to detail so good to go through
36:04SPEAKERthe entire movie like translate everything all of the fraternity signs like the join this club all
36:09SPEAKERthis are all in french and it was and and yeah monsters university is in yeah anyway i mean
36:14SPEAKERthat's one of the cool things about the blu-ray format is that they use branching video yeah so
36:18SPEAKERthat they can do that they can fit multiple versions of a movie on the same disc because
36:22SPEAKERit just branches back and forth to the different language exactly stuff blu-ray is awesome but it
36:25SPEAKERmakes it but it makes it harder to figure out how to rip stuff i mean look that was i think how easy
36:30SPEAKERit is to rip probably wasn't a primary design consideration for the spec certainly not speaking
36:35SPEAKERof ripping stuff i love ripping uh here's an email from jabril okay um i've been wondering what
36:41SPEAKERexperiences both of you have with console modding dumping games and emulation lately i've started
36:46SPEAKERdown a rabbit hole learning how to dump ds gamecube weu ps2 and ps3 to my pc it started
36:53SPEAKERwith buying a used ds and tinkering with custom firmware escalated to buying a weu so i could dump
36:58SPEAKERused we and weu disks and then culminated in hunting down a specific model of cd drive that
37:04SPEAKERis capable of reading gamecube disks it's been fun to explore github repositories and old forum posts
37:09SPEAKERfor answers to obscure questions plus it's nice to know that i don't have to rely on the benevolence
37:14SPEAKERof console manufacturers to maintain access to my library of older titles have you messed with
37:19SPEAKERany of the stuff at all so once upon a time there was a moment when it was really easy to hack a we
37:25SPEAKERand i don't remember the specific mechanics but basically you just downloaded something and put
37:28SPEAKERon the sd card i've looked into this i've never done any of the stuff but i've looked into that
37:32SPEAKERmore recently and there's like i think depending on which version of firmware you're on on your
37:35SPEAKERwe there's different there's different there's always yeah a lot of it has to do with like
37:40SPEAKERit might be the web browser or maybe some mail client or something there's like some of the like
37:46SPEAKERsystem level or netflix like there was a third-party app you installed it might have
37:50SPEAKERjust been the we shop channel i can't remember again it depends yeah i think i think one of them
37:54SPEAKERuses like the messages interface to for yeah some kind of exploit anyway it's still possible you
37:58SPEAKERbasically had to follow a series of convoluted and seemingly arbitrary steps and then at the end you
38:03SPEAKERhad a piece of software on the thing that was basically like the we we jailbreak channel yeah
38:09SPEAKERthat then you could rip any of the game cube or we just because those don't just read in any
38:15SPEAKERold cd drive on a pc although it sounds like he found you you can like there's a whole world of
38:20SPEAKERhacking firmware on your optical drive so it'll do weird stuff like right now the best way to
38:25SPEAKERrip uhd disks that i'm aware of your 4k blu-ray is you have to is to mod a firmware on a thumb
38:32SPEAKERon a usb uh on a so sorry on a 4k blu-ray drive there are there are a bunch of uh what are just
38:38SPEAKERadvertised as regular blue bd roms i should say yeah the blu-ray drives for your computer that can
38:43SPEAKERphysically read uhd 4k discs but they don't out of the box but yeah you can yeah you can make that
38:49SPEAKERwork i have not but i've read about it i no comment um so uh but the the i've looked into
38:56SPEAKERthis stuff it was really easy for the we really yeah i don't so i don't have a we so i maybe i
39:02SPEAKERcould probably how did you never have a we oh you never had a we never bought a we somehow i never
39:06SPEAKERbought a we we had wheeze at work for the four we games that i cared about playing well so i ripped
39:14SPEAKERi ripped i wanted rip gamecube games yeah that's my biggest objective and i've never done it but i
39:18SPEAKERthat's what i would like to do but but like the ones that i really was excited about like the
39:23SPEAKERrogue squadron games don't play in dolphin or didn't at the time i haven't i haven't come back
39:28SPEAKERto him a long time okay they used some weird rendering technique that just was off unlike
39:33SPEAKERanything else on that platform yeah uh the we i played skyward sword on the pc and it was great
39:39SPEAKERi played it like 1080p 60 frames a second sure still still really slow start yeah um but yeah
39:46SPEAKERripping the disc you just get an iso and then you can point dolphin at the iso it took a surprising
39:50SPEAKERnumber of tries because there was no like error correction on the on the rip so some of the isos
39:55SPEAKERwould come out bad okay and you'd have to do them again and i don't know why that happened but it
40:00SPEAKERwas just a fact of life i uh just as a shout out i love the round edges on the wii u discs i
40:07SPEAKERit's the best thing about that thing pulled a wii u disc off my shelf like a month ago good
40:12SPEAKERi haven't actually played one of those things in two years or something but i pulled it out
40:16SPEAKERjust to touch the edges of the disc because it's so nice my daughter and i play cat the
40:20SPEAKERcatsuit mario mario 3d world on the regs and we are we almost have all the worlds unlocked nice
40:27SPEAKERit's taken a long time you're gonna get to that ultimate super crazy hard love those round edges
40:31SPEAKERfeel so good they're the best um i've looked into the uh a related topic a good bit and have not
40:37SPEAKERbeen brave enough to try it um which is modding your wii u soft modding your wii u to play game
40:43SPEAKERcube games wait what so the you know the wii u natively can play wii games which means it can
40:49SPEAKERplay game cube games right but they did not enable that feature i assumed it was because the optical
40:54SPEAKERdrive couldn't deal with those tiny discs it can read them wow so there is a software mod for wii
40:59SPEAKERu's that so i've you know i've got uh 25 maybe 30 game cube games in my closet in a box and there's
41:05SPEAKERsome you know some great games real bangers yeah and you know even the uh the wii never had hdmi out
41:11SPEAKERright wasn't it component only so we had component out yeah i think that's why i had to use the game
41:16SPEAKERcube component i think that's why i ended up caring about this because the wii u is the first
41:20SPEAKERnintendo console with like proper digital hdmi out so i was like oh i want the thing that has
41:25SPEAKERan hdmi out to be able to play my game cube games but and it's possible like you can do it it's not
41:31SPEAKERthe easiest mod but the thing that's always spooked me is just like i don't know what if
41:35SPEAKERthey banned my console for all that online wii u stuff i'm doing well and also it's probably still
41:40SPEAKERattached to your switch account that's what i mean that's what i mean is like nintendo can be kind of
41:44SPEAKERodorous about online security stuff like that and like i just don't know if it's worth the risk the
41:48SPEAKERother thing is um i haven't looked into this in a while but we like second hand we use they're real
41:53SPEAKERexpensive not easy to come by no i i went i thought ours was dead a few months ago okay and
41:58SPEAKERit was a real source of tragedy in our house sure um and when i went to look at how much after you
42:06SPEAKERknow second second hand we use cost it was more expensive than it was when it was new it was like
42:11SPEAKER400 bucks it has to be just i assume because they ended manufacturing early because it was kind of a
42:15SPEAKERfailure yeah well and like if you look at the if you look at the the list of titles that can't well
42:21SPEAKERa the software is real cheap so you can get you can get discs pretty inexpensively but like it's
42:26SPEAKERa pretty good catalog for a for a machine that sold like eight million units there are some
42:31SPEAKERlegitimately great games yeah on the wii u yeah and you know most of them are coming to the switch
42:35SPEAKERnow so that's kind of moot um you want to do one more sure how about alex it's coming out on march
42:44SPEAKER23rd i'm ready okay give it to me alex wrote in well this is awkward yes alex wrote in with a bone
42:51SPEAKERto pick oh about our windows episodes oh that's fine i noticed on your recent episodes where you
42:56SPEAKERstack rank the different versions of windows that you skipped over windows 98 second edition what's
43:01SPEAKERup with that just to be clear we didn't stack rank i think i literally wrote stack rank in
43:06SPEAKERone of the episode descriptions was that a mistake oh i feel like that ranking is a performance
43:10SPEAKERreview it is that was a little inside microsoft reference yeah it's the thing everybody hated
43:15SPEAKERabout working at microsoft back in the day they have ended that practice um we had a bunch of
43:19SPEAKERemails about this about windows 98 second edition we also had a bunch of people asking what happened
43:22SPEAKERto windows 9 um oh that's oh because it went from windows 8 8.1 to 10. i i can certainly tell you
43:29SPEAKERwhat i've always heard is the reason well seven eight nine that's not what i was gonna know that's
43:34SPEAKERnot the reason that joke in the initial press release they really did they themselves yes man
43:41SPEAKERthe thing i always heard about why there was no windows 9 is that there is way too much
43:45SPEAKERlegacy software out there with the string the text string windows 95 in it
43:50SPEAKERand that it would cause havoc with if you had if you had something that was windows 9
43:54SPEAKERand that text string was showing up in places where you might also run into windows 95 there
43:58SPEAKERwould be too much like software confusion it's not the case no that my understanding is that that is
44:03SPEAKERnot the case okay my understanding uh and i have not had any kind of confirmation on this is that
44:10SPEAKERit is a straight marketing decision uh because i think apple 9 is uh a the other the other company
44:18SPEAKERthat they were really concerned about uh uh had a operating system called something 10 the other
44:26SPEAKERthing is that in china uh the number nine has a bad luck sound the like number okay and it's it's
44:33SPEAKERalso feared in japan because it's similar to the word for torture and suffering wow it's a super
44:37SPEAKERthose are superstitions i don't but those are two i mean it's one enormous market yeah for windows
44:43SPEAKERokay so um just kind of kill two birds with one stone my my understanding is it was probably a
44:48SPEAKERmarketing decision but they've never officially confirmed that as far as i know safe safe for
44:52SPEAKERinternational release and also sound like you're keeping up with apple yes uh i would love to hear
44:58SPEAKERi would love i mean samsung releases galaxy nines and all that so i like i don't know that the nine
45:04SPEAKERthing the nine superstition thing is real i do know that like they didn't they i'm sure they
45:09SPEAKERwere concerned about os 10 because that was also remember windows 10 came out around the time when
45:13SPEAKERmac laptops were really selling like hotcakes yes absolutely okay so for the second edition
45:20SPEAKERi don't think windows 98 second edition is that important okay so i didn't put on the list i also
45:25SPEAKERkind of forgot it forgot about it yeah um it include the things that added were wd wdm audio
45:31SPEAKERmodel and modem support okay so windows driver model support for audio and mode which means you
45:36SPEAKERdon't necessarily have to plug in drivers for like usb modems and usb sound cards to work
45:43SPEAKERit replaced inner explorer 4 with inner explorer 5 it fixed usb support it added web folders the
45:48SPEAKERweb dev namespace extension for windows explorer which was an incredibly insecure feature and
45:54SPEAKERincluded firewire support for camp orders right yeah okay uh and wake on land did they wow really
46:00SPEAKERis wake on land that old wake on land's been around for a long time i know that i just started
46:03SPEAKERusing that recently yeah it's pretty cool i use it for my steam link it turns on my pc and i can
46:07SPEAKERplay games and they sell i mean they sold a box that said windows 98 second edition on the front
46:12SPEAKERwindows 98 se could be attained obtained as a retail upgrade and a full version packages okay
46:17SPEAKERso it's the kind of thing now that you would buy that's a service it would just you just get it for
46:21SPEAKERfree right but it was probably big enough with net meeting new windows media player like the download
46:29SPEAKERwas probably substantial enough in a time when most of the home audience was on modems that they
46:35SPEAKERhad to sell it as a disc would you believe that i am in the process of setting up a com port a
46:40SPEAKERserial port because this is related to your ubiquity stuff no it's i don't know i already
46:45SPEAKERhave a serial cable for that thing it saved my ass a couple times i am enabling it i'm not gonna
46:51SPEAKERdo it can we start a bbs i'm gonna dude yes absolutely that's a patreon that's a patreon
46:56SPEAKERbacker bonus access to the tech pod bbs i don't know how much longer you're gonna be able to get
47:01SPEAKERa straight up analog copper phone line into your house i think we should do a virtual it's already
47:06SPEAKERi'm guessing dial-in bbs is not gonna work over a VoIP line if i had to you i tried to dial i tried
47:12SPEAKERto do modems over VoIPs at maximum pc with Vonage when VoIP was new yeah it did not work yeah that's
47:17SPEAKERthat's what i the compression did bad things to the modem sounds uh no i'm setting up a serial port
47:22SPEAKERon my nas so i can get console output out of that port if necessary that's nice there have been times
47:27SPEAKERwhen there was it was related to corrupted boot media so it's probably not going to happen often
47:31SPEAKERbut there have been times when like the the ssh and web demons on the nas broke yeah and there
47:36SPEAKERwas no way to get into the machine well so how do you get do you have a usb adapter from on the
47:42SPEAKERmachine yeah so there i've got so that's what i've got for the ubiquity router already there's
47:46SPEAKERa company called ftdi i forget what it stands for but they make chipsets that emulate old like serial
47:52SPEAKERport type hardware okay for for usb or they translate translates so get that rs232 yes so
47:57SPEAKERlike literally i'm about to order what is it's rs232 on one end usb on the other and there's
48:03SPEAKERthere's a tiny like i said a little mediating ic in the in the usb cable okay so that makes windows
48:09SPEAKERsee it as a com port and then you can get serial output so where console output so is it just usb
48:14SPEAKERto usb no no in this case it's you have to have another what is a d sub or whatever yeah the nine
48:20SPEAKERpin yeah yeah yeah d sub was uh a metal gear thing i think right um anyway whatever this is this is
48:28SPEAKERold man tech don't you have to do that the other way too no the on the how do you plug that into
48:34SPEAKERone of your modern computers it does not have a serial port so my motherboard i don't know if
48:37SPEAKERmotherboards still have this but this is about a five-year-old motherboard in my mass you have a
48:41SPEAKERserial port it's got a header it's got headers on the motherboard for an lpt and comports really so
48:47SPEAKERyou have to buy a breakout bracket like you have to just like how you connect the case usb ports to
48:51SPEAKERthe motherboard yeah it also has a header on the motherboard for a comport holy crap i didn't know
48:55SPEAKERanybody still put those on for a printer port again this is about a five-year-old motherboard
48:58SPEAKERso maybe they've not oh man i gotta go look at the manual for my server because that was yeah like
49:02SPEAKERright now when it actually made me think about your problem without not being able to get into
49:05SPEAKERyour machine yeah when i have to fix something i have to like climb up on a ladder and because
49:09SPEAKERit's on a high shelf in my garage also they make it's like a 10-foot cable so you can plug that
49:14SPEAKERinto the uh the serial port on your nest and then run it down to like a laptop you can plug it into
49:18SPEAKERa macbook and then you can use screen in a terminal window and straight up get the console
49:22SPEAKERoutput of the machine it's kind of awesome i want to go one step further yeah and i want to set up a
49:26SPEAKERraspberry pi that's plugged into that so i can just remote into the raspberry pi i've seen people
49:31SPEAKERtalking about using this with a pie as well it's this sounds great it's pretty awesome this is 40
49:36SPEAKERto 40 foot what 45-year-old technology yeah it's every let's get that 112k kilobits per
49:42SPEAKERsecond serial ports are straight up from like the 60s or 70s on the page where i'm i was buying this
49:48SPEAKERcable and on the page i think it's actually on the amazon page like the little their little splash
49:52SPEAKERmarketing graphic straight up talks about connecting it to like cash registers and
49:56SPEAKERpoint of sale and like the 40-year-old embedded machines that you would need to plug a serial
50:00SPEAKERcable into the thing that this is going to jack up your amazon recommendation something fierce it's
50:04SPEAKERgoing to be like this and then metamucil and like adult diapers and and uh yeah a lot of old person
50:12SPEAKERstuff yes i think that'll do it for us today that's it we've turned the cues into a's uh if
50:17SPEAKERyou have more cues i think we have a bunch of questions left we had a bunch of good questions
50:21SPEAKERwe'd like to get through all of them by any stretch so maybe we'll do another q a episode
50:26SPEAKERsometime soon or do a bonus episode or something yeah um but thank you all for listening um the
