180: Chowder 'n Cookies

2023-04-23 · 1:03:15

00:00SPEAKER- Have you ever wanted to claw your own eyes out?

00:02SPEAKER- No, no, not at all.

00:04SPEAKERIt's never even come up.

00:06SPEAKER- Huh, okay, well, that makes one of us, I guess.

00:09SPEAKER- Brad, are you okay?

00:11SPEAKERDo I need to call?

00:12SPEAKERAre there some help lines we can call if we need to?

00:15SPEAKER- I mean, in an absolute sense, I'm okay, yes.

00:18SPEAKERYou don't actually need to worry,

00:19SPEAKERbut like in an immediate whinier sense,

00:24SPEAKERnot as, dude, the allergy season is,

00:27SPEAKERI don't even know what to say,

00:29SPEAKERother than I landed on an article

00:32SPEAKERpublished by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

00:35SPEAKER- Oh, the USDA.

00:36SPEAKER- The same, the very same, saying yes,

00:40SPEAKERallergy seasons are getting worse,

00:41SPEAKERit's climate change's fault.

00:43SPEAKER- I can see that.

00:44SPEAKERI, last night I had to cancel my stream

00:47SPEAKERbecause I had a headache, like a sinus headache so bad

00:50SPEAKERthat I had to go lay in a dark room

00:52SPEAKERand I just put on some quiet chill music.

00:55SPEAKER- That's a good thing to do.

00:56SPEAKERCold compress, cold, something cold on the eyes.

00:59SPEAKERI spent about 30 minutes this morning

01:02SPEAKERwith an ice cube pressed up against my eyes.

01:04SPEAKER- Oh.

01:05SPEAKER- Which helped quite a bit.

01:07SPEAKERAlso, I found an article talking about the California rains,

01:12SPEAKERbecause we've got an insane amount of rain,

01:14SPEAKERnot only has everything grown like crazy,

01:16SPEAKERbut apparently the very hard pounding rain

01:18SPEAKERbreaks up the pollen more into smaller particles.

01:21SPEAKER- Fantastic.

01:21SPEAKER- And makes, which makes it easier

01:23SPEAKERto like lodge into your sinuses.

01:26SPEAKER- So I've noticed coming out and looking at my car

01:28SPEAKERin the morning on any given day,

01:31SPEAKERI have a dark gray black car

01:33SPEAKERand it's often like got a yellow tinge

01:36SPEAKERjust from the pollen all over it.

01:37SPEAKERIt's been great this year.

01:39SPEAKER- Yeah, it's been a lot.

01:40SPEAKERI am on one, two, three, four, four allergy,

01:46SPEAKERI've taken four allergy medications in the last hour.

01:49SPEAKER- That's too many, Brad.

01:49SPEAKER- I've got a fifth, I've got Claritin in there

01:52SPEAKERthat I was thinking about, I don't know.

01:53SPEAKER- Just in case you jacked up on your antihistamines, huh?

01:56SPEAKER- God, I got the Flonase, I've got the Allegra,

01:59SPEAKERI've got the Benadryl.

02:01SPEAKER- So, okay, if I had taken a Benadryl and Allegra,

02:04SPEAKERI'd be unconscious right now, but.

02:06SPEAKER- Well, time to podcast.

02:07SPEAKER(upbeat music)

02:23SPEAKER(upbeat music)

02:36SPEAKER- Welcome to Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod, I'm Will.

02:38SPEAKER- I'm Brad.

02:39SPEAKER- It's Girl Scout cookie season, Brad.

02:42SPEAKERI mean, it's actually, today's the last day

02:44SPEAKERof Girl Scout cookie season.

02:45SPEAKERIf you're listening to this podcast on Sunday.

02:47SPEAKER- Thank God, it's been a rough season around here.

02:51SPEAKER- Wow, that's harsh on the Girl Scouts.

02:52SPEAKERI don't need the temptation anymore.

02:55SPEAKER- They, I don't think I've actually eaten any this year.

02:57SPEAKER- What?

02:58SPEAKER- I know, I maybe had one Samoa,

03:02SPEAKERbut I realized, I've talked about this before

03:05SPEAKERon the podcast, but like, there's like a death window

03:08SPEAKERfrom Halloween until Easter that encompasses like,

03:14SPEAKERHalloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas,

03:18SPEAKERMartin Luther King Day, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day,

03:23SPEAKERall the candy holidays, right?

03:25SPEAKERAnd Girl Scout cookies.

03:26SPEAKER- St. Patrick's is a candy, MLK, are those actually

03:29SPEAKERcandy holidays? - I don't think MLK

03:30SPEAKERactually is, but like there's gold chocolate coins

03:32SPEAKERon St. Patrick's Day, usually in our house, yeah.

03:35SPEAKERAnd just between the, like, I love our neighbors,

03:38SPEAKERthey bring so many Christmas cookies over.

03:41SPEAKERLike we get, we had a whole counter in our kitchen

03:45SPEAKERwas filled with like Christmas cookies and cupcakes

03:47SPEAKERand little cakes and it was delicious and it was wonderful.

03:50SPEAKERBut like, at some point I was just like, man,

03:53SPEAKERI wanna have nothing sweet in the house ever again.

03:56SPEAKER- You paid, you spent six months indulging

03:58SPEAKERand then six months paying for it.

04:00SPEAKER- Yeah, and Girl Scout cookies land

04:02SPEAKERright at the end of that season.

04:03SPEAKERI'm doing a great job selling the Girl Scout cookies

04:05SPEAKERby the way right now.

04:06SPEAKERGirl Scout cookies land at the end of that season

04:08SPEAKERand this year I was just like, no, I'm good.

04:11SPEAKERI'm not gonna do another five pounds of Girl Scout cookies.

04:13SPEAKERI can't, I can't put that on this year.

04:15SPEAKER- It's an impressive display of willpower,

04:17SPEAKERI have to say, willpower.

04:19SPEAKER- Well, I mean, and then the thing that happens is

04:21SPEAKERwhatever we don't sell ends up like going in the freezer

04:25SPEAKERbecause like they don't take, the Girl Scouts,

04:29SPEAKERthey don't take the cookies back

04:31SPEAKERif you don't sell them, you know?

04:32SPEAKERSo-- - Really?

04:33SPEAKERI did not realize that.

04:34SPEAKER- No, it's a strong incentive to move some fucking cookies

04:37SPEAKERbecause otherwise I'm buying a lot of cookies.

04:39SPEAKER- What are they, six bucks a box now?

04:41SPEAKER- Six bucks a box.

04:43SPEAKERThere's 180 boxes of cookies in my living room right now.

04:46SPEAKER- Oh my, that's a lot of cookie.

04:47SPEAKER- Yeah, we're going, we're doing a,

04:51SPEAKERI think the final, hopefully the final booth

04:53SPEAKERdown at Sam's Chowder House

04:55SPEAKERas soon as we get off the podcast basically.

04:57SPEAKER- Chowder and cookies, my favorite.

04:59SPEAKER- It's a lobster roll place,

05:00SPEAKERbut they do also have clam chowder.

05:03SPEAKERBut yeah, so anyway, the upshot is

05:05SPEAKERI gotta move these Girl Scout cookies.

05:07SPEAKERWe've started doing, we started doing Venmo

05:12SPEAKERat the cookie booths.

05:13SPEAKER- Oh yeah, we came out of Safeway three, four weeks ago

05:18SPEAKERand there was a stand there that was cash only

05:22SPEAKERand they had a ton of boxes left.

05:24SPEAKER- Yeah.

05:25SPEAKER- And my girlfriend said exactly that.

05:27SPEAKERShe was like, oh man, that little girl's really

05:29SPEAKERhamstringing herself by not taking Venmo or PayPal

05:32SPEAKERor like something that's not cash.

05:34SPEAKER- Well, it's a little bit of a,

05:36SPEAKERI mean, I feel a little bad about it

05:37SPEAKER'cause it's kind of a privilege thing too, right?

05:38SPEAKERLike you have to be able to do Venmo, right?

05:42SPEAKERWhich I guess means you have to have a phone.

05:43SPEAKER- Yeah.

05:44SPEAKER- Or your parent has to have a phone.

05:47SPEAKERIt is, and you have to be able to,

05:50SPEAKERlike the Venmo money has to be fungible enough for you

05:53SPEAKERthat you can get it out and afford to eat

05:54SPEAKERthe whatever transaction cost is

05:56SPEAKERfrom extracting money from Venmo.

05:57SPEAKERThere may not be one, depending on how you set it up.

06:00SPEAKERBut anyway, Venmo has been very good to us.

06:02SPEAKERWe just have a, I have the yo, my toner is low

06:07SPEAKERversion right here that says pay with cash, credit or Venmo.

06:10SPEAKER- That's an old printer for sure, is it?

06:12SPEAKER- Well, I'm just out of toner.

06:15SPEAKER- Is it a brother?

06:17SPEAKER- It is a brother.

06:17SPEAKER- It is, look, you don't say.

06:20SPEAKER- Let me go and tell you, the church of the wire cutter

06:23SPEAKERis strong in this house.

06:24SPEAKER- Oh, sure, I don't know about you,

06:26SPEAKERbut my brother long predates the wire cutter.

06:29SPEAKERDid you see that verge piece?

06:31SPEAKER- No.

06:32SPEAKER- You should look it up.

06:33SPEAKER- About the brother printers?

06:34SPEAKER- Yes.

06:35SPEAKER- I did see the verge piece, yes.

06:36SPEAKER- I did.

06:37SPEAKERI have maybe never felt more validated than I did

06:40SPEAKERwhen I saw that because I've, by and large,

06:44SPEAKERI have just gotten a lot of grief from people

06:45SPEAKERin recent years for even owning a printer.

06:47SPEAKERBut then I saw that go up and I actually didn't realize

06:51SPEAKERI just pulled this piece up.

06:52SPEAKERThey straight up formatted it like a wire cutter.

06:54SPEAKERThe best printer in 2023, just by the brother laser printer,

06:59SPEAKEReveryone has, it's fun.

07:00SPEAKER- Yeah, like, so here's the, my dirty secret

07:06SPEAKERis that Gina bought a brother laser printer in like 2005

07:10SPEAKERwhen she started working from home.

07:12SPEAKERIt was a combo fax machine printer scanner.

07:15SPEAKER- That's older than mine.

07:16SPEAKER- Yeah, it had 802.11 B and G, but not N.

07:23SPEAKERAnd about a year, about six months into the pandemic,

07:27SPEAKERwhen we had to start printing a ton of stuff

07:29SPEAKERfor the kiddo's school, it started squeaking.

07:33SPEAKERAnd I took it apart a couple of times

07:35SPEAKERto try to find the piece of, the shiv of paper

07:37SPEAKERthat was in there making the squeaking sound.

07:39SPEAKERAnd then I looked at what a new printer costs

07:41SPEAKERand how much smaller they are and the fact

07:43SPEAKERthat it doesn't require 802.11 B networking to work.

07:46SPEAKERAnd I was like, I'm gonna pay 80 bucks

07:48SPEAKERand buy a brand new brother printer and it's great,

07:50SPEAKERexcept it comes with a starter toner cartridge

07:54SPEAKERthat is like a third filled or some bullshit.

07:57SPEAKERSo I got to order a new toner is the takeaway.

07:59SPEAKER- I think you can, I think you can get aftermarket

08:02SPEAKERthird-party toner cartridges for those, right?

08:05SPEAKERAt least you could for mine.

08:06SPEAKER- It's cheap enough that I kind of don't care.

08:08SPEAKER- We have a refill.

08:09SPEAKEROh, you mean even the brother made toners cheap?

08:12SPEAKER- The brother made one is cheap enough that it's fine.

08:15SPEAKER- I've replaced the toner once in 15 years.

08:19SPEAKERIt's been almost exactly 15 years

08:21SPEAKERsince I bought that printer and one toner replacement.

08:24SPEAKER- So we print a little bit more than that,

08:26SPEAKERbut like I did a toner cartridge in the old brother printer

08:30SPEAKERwould last two, three years probably.

08:32SPEAKER- Sure, sure.

08:37SPEAKER- When I started FU, it was a little more difficult

08:40SPEAKERto do paperless than it is now.

08:43SPEAKER- Fair, a lot of contracts.

08:44SPEAKER- I had to print a lot of stuff and sign it

08:46SPEAKERand then send pictures back because people always wanted,

08:50SPEAKERit's not a wet signature if you don't have the piece of paper

08:52SPEAKERwith the ink on it, but it's like--

08:54SPEAKER- I was just about to say, I was just introduced

08:57SPEAKERto the phrase wet signature about two weeks ago.

09:00SPEAKERI don't like it.

09:01SPEAKERI continue to not like it.

09:03SPEAKER- Yeah, I think of the ones that like you sign

09:05SPEAKERand take the picture of or scan as a moist signature,

09:07SPEAKERI think is where that ends.

09:09SPEAKER- Okay, sure.

09:09SPEAKERThat's maybe, actually, moist maybe not much better

09:13SPEAKERnow that I think about it.

09:16SPEAKER- So this week we're gonna go back,

09:17SPEAKERwe're going back to the content mines

09:20SPEAKERand we're bringing back a favorite form of episode

09:24SPEAKERfor folks.

09:25SPEAKERIt's not, look, like eight of you have asked for us

09:30SPEAKERto continue the ranking of all software.

09:33SPEAKERA much larger group of people were like,

09:35SPEAKER"Hey man, maybe don't ever do that episode again."

09:38SPEAKER- I completely forgot we did that.

09:39SPEAKER- Yeah, look, we were in a little bit,

09:42SPEAKERit was a fever dream this holiday season.

09:43SPEAKER- It was a bit of a, "Hey, let's just try to figure out

09:46SPEAKER"what we can do to run over the holidays.

09:48SPEAKER"This sounds fun."

09:49SPEAKERI enjoyed it.

09:51SPEAKER- I enjoyed that conversation, yeah, it was fun.

09:53SPEAKER- Maybe, what if we just removed the ranking part

09:55SPEAKERand we just brought some fun show and tell software

09:58SPEAKERto talk about?

09:59SPEAKER- That's an interesting idea.

10:01SPEAKERPut that one in the file.

10:02SPEAKER- Yes.

10:03SPEAKER- But we're doing a potpourri episode this week, so.

10:06SPEAKER- Also known as a conversation.

10:08SPEAKER- Well, but I mean, the idea of the potpourri episode is,

10:12SPEAKERhere's some topics that aren't meaty enough

10:14SPEAKERto warrant a full hours conversation,

10:17SPEAKERbut are still interesting enough to talk about.

10:18SPEAKER- Yeah.

10:19SPEAKER- So, I mean, that's it.

10:22SPEAKERWe're gonna get into a handful of things

10:26SPEAKERthat probably don't stand on their own

10:27SPEAKERand maybe touch on one that I'm kind of borderline on,

10:31SPEAKERlike, we touched on fan control last week.

10:35SPEAKERThe more time I spend on fan control,

10:37SPEAKERthe more I think it's probably worthy of an episode

10:40SPEAKER'cause it is a really interesting,

10:42SPEAKERcomplicated piece of software.

10:43SPEAKER- Okay, I set it up yesterday, as a matter of fact.

10:46SPEAKER- Ooh.

10:47SPEAKERWell, okay, let's save that one for the end

10:49SPEAKERin case we have time.

10:49SPEAKER- Okay.

10:50SPEAKER- Right, just tease it.

10:52SPEAKER- I do need to talk about GPU fans while we're here, but--

10:54SPEAKER- You wanna start with that?

10:55SPEAKERYou wanna kick it off with that?

10:56SPEAKER- We could.

10:57SPEAKERWe could talk about my burb cam.

10:59SPEAKERBurb cam, burb, burb cam, burb cam.

11:02SPEAKER- How is the bird doing?

11:03SPEAKERActually, hold on.

11:04SPEAKER- Yeah. - I'll answer that.

11:06SPEAKER- You can just see it for yourself.

11:07SPEAKER- I can tell you the bird is currently out.

11:10SPEAKERNope, she just came back. - She just came back.

11:11SPEAKER- Yeah. - Wow.

11:12SPEAKER- It looks like she's about to poop.

11:14SPEAKER- Dude, wow, she enters the frame so fast,

11:16SPEAKERit's almost like she teleports in.

11:18SPEAKERThat was incredible.

11:19SPEAKER- It's a 30 frames per second camera.

11:20SPEAKER- I was gonna say the frame rate's probably low enough

11:22SPEAKERto enhance that effect, but she literally,

11:25SPEAKERit was like two frames from her not being there

11:27SPEAKERto her being there.

11:28SPEAKERThat was kind of incredible. - Oh, there's the boy.

11:30SPEAKERThere's the male, oh no.

11:30SPEAKER- Oh, wow, look at him.

11:32SPEAKER- We're getting a whole scene.

11:33SPEAKERThis is a great audio podcast here.

11:35SPEAKER- What are they doing?

11:36SPEAKER- She's, he's feeding her.

11:37SPEAKER- Wait.

11:39SPEAKER- So she has to sit on the eggs.

11:41SPEAKERHer job is sit on the eggs and he brings food.

11:43SPEAKER- Oh, I didn't realize they hadn't hatched yet.

11:45SPEAKER- No, no, no, they're just eggs still.

11:47SPEAKER- Oh, okay.

11:48SPEAKER- So, so yeah, so, okay.

11:51SPEAKERSo for people who don't, aren't paying attention

11:54SPEAKERto every single thing that we do.

11:56SPEAKERWe went, when we went to Tahoe a couple of weeks ago,

11:58SPEAKERwe came back and there was a bird nest on our front porch.

12:01SPEAKERAnd I did this thing any sane person would do

12:04SPEAKERand went to Amazon and bought an IP cam,

12:06SPEAKERa cheap IP cam and screwed it into the,

12:09SPEAKERas close as I could get it to the bird's nest

12:11SPEAKERwithout making them angry and sad.

12:13SPEAKERAnd then tried a couple of different ways.

12:17SPEAKERLike you can stream straight to RTMP sources

12:20SPEAKERfrom most IP cams these days.

12:21SPEAKER- Really?

12:22SPEAKER- Yeah, but then you can't adjust framing

12:24SPEAKERand you can't like put music and stuff like that on it.

12:26SPEAKERSo.

12:27SPEAKER- Oh, so is that camera streaming?

12:28SPEAKERSo yeah, I guess we talked about this a little bit

12:30SPEAKERlast week, but I guess the update here is that

12:32SPEAKERwe should talk about your process and your tech here.

12:34SPEAKERSo is that camera streaming directly to,

12:36SPEAKERis it going straight to an ingest server at Twitch?

12:39SPEAKER- Well, so that's what I did for the first day.

12:42SPEAKERBecause of the, okay, because the bird's nest

12:45SPEAKERis in a space with like three inches of clearance,

12:48SPEAKERI wasn't able to get the camera aimed

12:50SPEAKERso that up was up in any way

12:52SPEAKERthat the camera software could appreciate.

12:55SPEAKER- I did notice that you've added

12:57SPEAKERthis little down arrow annotation here.

12:59SPEAKER- Well, so originally though,

13:02SPEAKERthere was no rotation on the camera frame.

13:04SPEAKERSo if you, again, if you want to follow along and see,

13:07SPEAKERthe stream is probably running at twitch.tv/notthatwillsmith

13:11SPEAKERat any given moment during the day.

13:13SPEAKERSo I'm gonna, this is what the,

13:16SPEAKERthis is what the feed originally looked like, Brad.

13:18SPEAKER- Oh, wow.

13:19SPEAKER- With it rotated like that.

13:20SPEAKERAnd basically people couldn't tell which way was up.

13:27SPEAKERBecause there's no, it was confusing.

13:29SPEAKERSo first I put the this way down and then,

13:31SPEAKERand then that didn't, I couldn't,

13:32SPEAKERI couldn't overlay that on the video

13:35SPEAKERbecause the camera doesn't let you,

13:36SPEAKERit lets you put words, but not images.

13:39SPEAKERAnd then I was just like, wait,

13:40SPEAKERI can probably just pipe a stream

13:42SPEAKERfrom the camera directly into OBS.

13:46SPEAKERAnd I Googled that and like 30 seconds later,

13:48SPEAKERI had the answer and sure enough,

13:50SPEAKERyou can put an RTSP stream that the camera,

13:53SPEAKERthat OBS connects to the camera is like, hey man,

13:55SPEAKERgive me a stream.

13:56SPEAKERThe camera's like, yeah, sure, okay, whatever.

13:58SPEAKER- Don't tell me real time streaming protocol, I think.

14:03SPEAKERDude, I spent, I know we've talked about this before.

14:06SPEAKERI spent a lot of time three years ago during the pandemic

14:09SPEAKERlooking at streaming protocols.

14:10SPEAKER- Oh yeah, different ways to get high quality video

14:13SPEAKERout of OBS and into mixers.

14:15SPEAKER- Yes, or straight to a streaming service.

14:17SPEAKER- The number, the point is the number of streaming protocols

14:20SPEAKERthat are some combination of the letters R, T, S and P

14:25SPEAKERis absolutely ridiculous.

14:26SPEAKERThere's RTP, there's RTSP, there's RTMP, there's SRT.

14:31SPEAKERIt's like maybe a little more creativity is called for

14:34SPEAKERin your protocol naming.

14:35SPEAKER- Well, but I think some of them are the same,

14:36SPEAKERjust it's whether it's a push or a pull, right?

14:39SPEAKER- I'm not sure about that.

14:40SPEAKER- RTSP and RTMP work identically except for one,

14:45SPEAKERyou go and ask for and one you send up to a repeater.

14:48SPEAKER- Some of them, yeah, some of them are, I think,

14:50SPEAKERkind of a superset.

14:51SPEAKERIt's like, I can't remember which are which,

14:54SPEAKERbut like some of them will use,

14:56SPEAKERsome of them will use a lower level protocol on one port

14:59SPEAKERand then like some extra stuff on another port.

15:02SPEAKERSo some of them actually encompass others.

15:04SPEAKERIt's a lot to keep up with.

15:06SPEAKER- Well, so anyway, I bought this, it's a 4K.

15:11SPEAKERI bought it mainly 'cause it has decent night vision.

15:14SPEAKERI went and made sure that the birds don't get bothered,

15:18SPEAKERthat birds can't see IR,

15:20SPEAKER'cause I didn't wanna like eye blast the birds all night,

15:23SPEAKERevery night.

15:25SPEAKERBut so we have a house finch,

15:28SPEAKERwe have a family of a pair of house finches.

15:30SPEAKER- Ooh, you've identified the species.

15:32SPEAKER- Yeah, well, it's hard to tell the difference

15:34SPEAKERbetween house finches and purple finches, we learned.

15:36SPEAKERPurple finches on the West Coast typically have a crest.

15:39SPEAKERHouse finches are the similar coloring,

15:41SPEAKERusually a little more reddish for the male.

15:43SPEAKERThe females have a distinctive mark above their eyes,

15:46SPEAKERwhich you can see on our girl here.

15:49SPEAKER- You got that finch. - When she looks

15:50SPEAKERthe right way, we got that finch.

15:51SPEAKER- You got that finch.

15:52SPEAKER- She sings, they sing.

15:53SPEAKERWhen the male comes and brings food for her,

15:56SPEAKERshe's very excited and kind of chirps

15:58SPEAKERand sings every morning.

15:59SPEAKER- Does that camera have a microphone?

16:01SPEAKER- It does not, because that camera is about three feet

16:04SPEAKERfrom my couch and I didn't want everybody on streams

16:06SPEAKERto be able to hear every conversation I have.

16:08SPEAKER- Fair, that's a good point.

16:09SPEAKER- Yeah, so I intentionally bought one without a microphone.

16:13SPEAKERThe, so the setup is IP bird cam, IP security cam.

16:19SPEAKERI bought an Amcrest 4K, which was like,

16:22SPEAKERit was on sale for 80 bucks when I looked for it.

16:25SPEAKERIt could get here the next day, which seemed important.

16:27SPEAKERIt had a weather casing.

16:29SPEAKER- Okay, are they a known brand?

16:30SPEAKERI had not heard of them before, but.

16:32SPEAKER- They make a bazillion cameras.

16:36SPEAKERAlso, they didn't have any cloud bullshit.

16:38SPEAKERThat was my other criteria, is I wanted something

16:40SPEAKERthat I could keep entirely within my network

16:43SPEAKERand not have to go up to their servers.

16:44SPEAKER- That's really exactly what I was asking

16:47SPEAKERin terms of their reputation,

16:48SPEAKERbecause I am super skittish about the Alexa age

16:52SPEAKERof video and audio recording devices in the home.

16:55SPEAKERSo yeah, something, the more like open and unconnected

16:58SPEAKERsomething is, the better in that space to me.

17:00SPEAKER- Yeah, so this one is, it was also PoE,

17:04SPEAKER'cause I didn't wanna have to run multiple,

17:06SPEAKERpower over ethernet, 'cause I didn't wanna have

17:07SPEAKERto run multiple cables.

17:09SPEAKERThey offer some cloud stuff.

17:10SPEAKERIt's optional, you can turn it off

17:12SPEAKERand I was happy to do that.

17:14SPEAKERAnd it's not looking at ports outside the network, so.

17:18SPEAKER- Do you, how do you administrate it?

17:21SPEAKERDoes it have a web interface?

17:22SPEAKER- It has a web interface, but there's an app too.

17:24SPEAKERYou can, if you load up the app, it scans your network

17:27SPEAKERand finds the IPs that respond on the right port.

17:29SPEAKER- That's cool.

17:30SPEAKER- Yeah, but I plugged it into my UniFi switch

17:34SPEAKERand the UniFi console was like, hey, this device is on now

17:38SPEAKERand it has this IP address.

17:39SPEAKERAnd then I typed that IP address in and I was right there.

17:42SPEAKER- You know, I don't wanna steal your thunder or anything,

17:43SPEAKERbut you doing this has got me thinking again

17:45SPEAKERabout piggy cams.

17:47SPEAKER- I am happy to help you figure out the piggy cam setup

17:50SPEAKERif you would like.

17:51SPEAKERI'm also, so other thing I'm doing is I'm piping

17:54SPEAKERin chill lo-fi beats from Pretzel Rocks,

17:59SPEAKERwhich is like a streamer friendly royalty free music site.

18:06SPEAKERLike no copyright, no royalty problems.

18:10SPEAKER- Oh, that's cool.

18:10SPEAKER- Wow, that's awesome, I didn't know that existed.

18:13SPEAKER- Yeah, and it's like 10 bucks a month

18:15SPEAKERor something like that.

18:16SPEAKERAnd it's basically Spotify for royalty free stuff.

18:19SPEAKERSo I run the app on my machine.

18:21SPEAKERI'm piping the audio out to my Steam streaming microphone.

18:26SPEAKERAnd then I'm using the OBS experimental capture,

18:30SPEAKERexperimental application audio capture to just grab that.

18:34SPEAKERSo I don't have to hear the Pretzel stuff on my PC

18:37SPEAKERwhen I'm just doing it.

18:38SPEAKERI'm using the same PC that I'm using to stream this right now

18:41SPEAKERand it's just working, so that's pretty cool.

18:43SPEAKER- Do you know you could, I don't know if you care enough

18:46SPEAKERor not, but you could set up a big,

18:49SPEAKERit would be pretty complicated, but a big FFmpeg filter.

18:52SPEAKERSo you can run the stream headlessly if you want.

18:54SPEAKER- I absolutely could do that.

18:56SPEAKER- You could do a transform on the raw video coming in

19:00SPEAKERto rotate it and place it the way you want.

19:02SPEAKERAnd you could make like an overlay image

19:03SPEAKERor another video even.

19:04SPEAKERI kind of got into like looking at overlays and transitions

19:07SPEAKERand stuff in FFmpeg.

19:08SPEAKERI mean, it would be, the command line would be a mile long

19:11SPEAKERand it would be very tricky

19:12SPEAKER'cause the syntax is insane in that thing.

19:14SPEAKERBut you could like run this on your B-link if you wanted to.

19:16SPEAKER- So I do FFmpeg stuff to do Steam streaming

19:20SPEAKERfor the Anacrusis when that goes.

19:22SPEAKER- Okay, so you've done some of that then.

19:24SPEAKER- But the thing I find is that you need another script

19:27SPEAKERthat runs around that to restart it

19:29SPEAKERwhen it like loses connection or drops or whatever.

19:31SPEAKER- Oh, interesting.

19:33SPEAKERIs that a network connectivity thing or is this,

19:34SPEAKERis the camera just not reliable enough to stay up?

19:37SPEAKER- It's a Twitch, it's either a Twitch

19:41SPEAKERor network connectivity thing between me and Twitch.

19:43SPEAKERSo if the Twitch connection gets, okay.

19:47SPEAKEROkay, so there's two things.

19:48SPEAKEROne is that I do have to reset the network camera,

19:51SPEAKERthe RTSP stream occasionally,

19:53SPEAKER'cause it does get a little glitchy

19:54SPEAKERover a period of 20 hours, 10 to 20 hours.

19:59SPEAKERThe other issue is that you do have to restart

20:04SPEAKERthe Twitch stream occasionally.

20:05SPEAKER- Okay, that would be doable.

20:07SPEAKER- And Twitch kicks you off.

20:09SPEAKERHonestly, I'm happy running this in OBS

20:12SPEAKER'cause I can still use virtual camera for a different scene,

20:14SPEAKERwhich is what I use OBS for on my desktop most of the time.

20:17SPEAKERAnd this lets me have a live feed

20:19SPEAKERinto what's going on on the bird

20:21SPEAKERwhen I'm sitting at my desk, which I like.

20:23SPEAKER- So can you, hang on.

20:25SPEAKERSo you're saying you're streaming out of OBS

20:26SPEAKERto Twitch the bird stuff, but you can still use virtual.

20:28SPEAKERI thought that virtual camera only outputted

20:31SPEAKERwhatever was in the program feed.

20:33SPEAKER- No, when you set up virtual camera,

20:34SPEAKERyou choose which scene is your camera scene.

20:36SPEAKER- Oh, no kidding.

20:37SPEAKER- Yeah, so you can use that independently.

20:39SPEAKER- So, wow, I thought you could not access the camera,

20:42SPEAKERthe virtual camera while you were streaming something else

20:44SPEAKERout, oh, that's good to know.

20:45SPEAKER- No, yeah, it's much more useful than I,

20:48SPEAKERI found that out a few weeks ago and I was like,

20:49SPEAKERoh, this changes how I feel about virtual camera.

20:52SPEAKER- Yeah.

20:53SPEAKER- And I already liked virtual camera a lot.

20:55SPEAKER- And so I assume that means you can tweak

20:57SPEAKERthat the camera scene and have that be effective

20:59SPEAKERin real time, regardless of what's, wow.

21:02SPEAKER- So I opened it up in studio mode,

21:04SPEAKERcan adjust the camera scene.

21:06SPEAKER- In the preview.

21:07SPEAKER- In the preview, and then that,

21:08SPEAKERbut that is reflected immediately in the virtual.

21:10SPEAKER- Oh, that's awesome, I am going to mess with that.

21:12SPEAKEROh, you're virtual camming as we speak?

21:14SPEAKER- I'm virtual camming, right, oh, that's awesome.

21:16SPEAKER- Also, hang on, wow, look at that.

21:18SPEAKERYour frame's just flying around.

21:20SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm all over the place.

21:22SPEAKER- Wait, hang on, do you not always use studio mode?

21:25SPEAKER- I hardly ever use studio mode.

21:27SPEAKER- Really, studio mode is the only way to go

21:29SPEAKERas far as I'm concerned, but.

21:31SPEAKER- Well, so most of my stuff, I use one scene.

21:34SPEAKERLike I have a scene before the stream starts,

21:36SPEAKERand then I have a scene when I need to, like,

21:40SPEAKERget up from the desk or something.

21:41SPEAKER- Yeah, that's fair, I guess you pretty much stream

21:43SPEAKERthe same way every day, so that makes sense.

21:47SPEAKERI just like, sorry.

21:48SPEAKER- My scenes are complicated.

21:50SPEAKERThe scene that I use is complicated,

21:52SPEAKERbut the number of scenes I have is relatively straightforward.

21:55SPEAKER- That's probably fine, that makes sense.

21:56SPEAKERI just like having a net, I like having a buffer

21:59SPEAKERbetween scene changes, so that if I select the wrong thing

22:03SPEAKERor don't want something to go out,

22:04SPEAKERyou have time to not do it.

22:06SPEAKER- Part of the no studio mode is a legacy

22:12SPEAKERof the Stream Deck software not supporting

22:17SPEAKERstudio mode properly, so not giving you a good way

22:19SPEAKERto transition between scenes.

22:21SPEAKER- Oh, has that changed?

22:23SPEAKERI've dabbled with it a little bit

22:24SPEAKERnow that I'm using the Stream Deck.

22:25SPEAKERIt seems to support scene transition stuff pretty well now.

22:29SPEAKER- Last year, they added support,

22:30SPEAKERor last year moved in 2021, but I've been using it

22:33SPEAKERfor five years, four, five, six years at this point.

22:36SPEAKER- Well, hey, what if you didn't use the Elgato software

22:38SPEAKERat all to run your Stream Deck?

22:40SPEAKER- Oh, that was a nice segue, Brad.

22:44SPEAKERSo yeah, there's this Bitfocus companion thing,

22:46SPEAKERwhich is an open source project.

22:49SPEAKER- Is it?

22:50SPEAKER- Yes.

22:51SPEAKER- Okay, so yeah, you have evangelized Bitfocus.

22:54SPEAKEROh yeah, here's the repo, because when you go

22:56SPEAKERto their website, they ask you to create an account

22:58SPEAKERto download it.

22:59SPEAKER- So they do that, I actually don't have any idea

23:03SPEAKERwhy they do that.

23:04SPEAKERThere's a fact that explains why they do that,

23:06SPEAKERbut I haven't cared enough to read it.

23:07SPEAKER- I think I did read why, there quite literally is,

23:09SPEAKERwhy do you want us to make an account

23:11SPEAKERto download the software?

23:12SPEAKERIs it totally free?

23:14SPEAKER- Totally free.

23:15SPEAKER- It seems like it, yes, here's the repo right here.

23:17SPEAKER- They are, they're in the process of building

23:22SPEAKERsome patronage type, like, hey, you can get some bonus stuff.

23:28SPEAKERIf you give us money type support for this.

23:31SPEAKER- Okay, yeah, it's got 60 contributors.

23:33SPEAKERIt is definitely a fully false thing.

23:36SPEAKER- Yeah, so basically it's designed to be a cross platform,

23:42SPEAKER'cause it works with other kind of stream deck-like things.

23:44SPEAKERThere's a couple of other, there's the loop deck

23:46SPEAKERand some other things that are kind of similar,

23:49SPEAKERthat are either more or less functional.

23:51SPEAKERYou can also plug it into like a MIDI interface.

23:53SPEAKERIt's basically a software front end

23:56SPEAKERfor control of other hardware and software front ends.

24:00SPEAKERAnd you can use it with a stream deck.

24:01SPEAKERYou can use it, you can create buttons using it

24:04SPEAKERthat work on the stream deck,

24:05SPEAKERso you don't have to replace your stream deck software.

24:07SPEAKERYou can use it as a subset if you want

24:10SPEAKERfor your stream deck software.

24:13SPEAKERBut it also, it has much better support

24:16SPEAKERfor audio interfaces and production hardware

24:19SPEAKERthan the stream deck has.

24:20SPEAKERWhere the stream deck focuses on stuff that streamers use,

24:23SPEAKERthis is more for, hey, if you're running the sound board

24:28SPEAKERat a live venue or a church or something like that,

24:31SPEAKERthen this will let you interface with the mixer directly.

24:36SPEAKERI have this stream deck plus with knobs

24:38SPEAKERthat now I can turn the knobs

24:39SPEAKERand it'll adjust my levels on my big mixer

24:42SPEAKERacross the network. - That thing is cool.

24:45SPEAKERIt's also got the kind of touch surface, right?

24:46SPEAKERKind of a touch strip screen.

24:49SPEAKER- Yeah, and so you can, they support a bazillion things.

24:53SPEAKERIt's a little, it's not exactly one-to-one

24:56SPEAKERof the stuff that the stream deck supports.

24:59SPEAKERAnd there's some stuff that's a little more complicated,

25:01SPEAKERbut you can also call scripts, call applications.

25:04SPEAKERLike I have a shortcut that launches OBS

25:06SPEAKERwith virtual camera already running

25:09SPEAKERusing some command line flags and stuff like that, so.

25:13SPEAKER- I'm gonna have to take a look at this.

25:14SPEAKERSorry, I have now gotten off on a derail

25:16SPEAKERlooking at loop decks, which are kind of awesome.

25:20SPEAKERThey appear to also do dials.

25:22SPEAKER- They had dials before stream deck had dials,

25:24SPEAKERand I think they have more dials typically.

25:26SPEAKER- So that's the thing about the stream deck plus.

25:28SPEAKERIf people haven't seen it, what is it, eight buttons?

25:31SPEAKER- The stream deck plus is eight buttons,

25:33SPEAKERa touch strip that effectively is four more buttons,

25:36SPEAKERand then four dials, four knobs that are also four buttons.

25:39SPEAKER- That's not a bad mix.

25:40SPEAKERI feel like eight buttons is maybe a little limited for me.

25:45SPEAKER- So, I have two stream decks.

25:49SPEAKERI have a big one, the XL, hooked up to the streaming PC,

25:53SPEAKERand then I have the little one hooked up to the main PC.

25:59SPEAKERThe thing I find is that while I'm actually working,

26:04SPEAKERI have one that does lighting in the room.

26:06SPEAKERI have one, I switch between pages a lot,

26:09SPEAKERand you do that by swiping on the strip, basically.

26:15SPEAKERAnd I find that I have one scene

26:17SPEAKERthat I use a little at the start of the day,

26:18SPEAKERand one scene that I use at the end of the day,

26:19SPEAKERand then the other one is the one

26:20SPEAKERthat stays on all the time.

26:24SPEAKERBut it's nice to be able to adjust the audio.

26:26SPEAKERI used to have a big MIDI interface on my desk

26:28SPEAKERthat I used for that, and it didn't give me feedback about,

26:31SPEAKERlike this lets me have multiple,

26:33SPEAKERso now I have multiple layers where I have

26:36SPEAKERthe program feed, the monitor feed that I hear,

26:39SPEAKERthe program feed is what goes out to the stream,

26:41SPEAKERthe monitor feed is what I hear,

26:42SPEAKERand then I also have a layer for what you're hearing

26:44SPEAKERright now that comes back into my PC,

26:47SPEAKERso I can adjust my mic hotness coming back into the PC,

26:51SPEAKERwhich means I don't ever have to touch gain

26:52SPEAKERon anything anymore, it's just adjusting levels,

26:55SPEAKERwhich is really good.

26:56SPEAKER- I assume you don't have that program monitor

26:58SPEAKERactive at all times, 'cause that would probably

26:59SPEAKERmake you insane.

27:01SPEAKER- Which?

27:03SPEAKER- What you just described, the entire mix

27:05SPEAKERcoming back in that you can hear.

27:07SPEAKER- I do, 'cause usually that's the only way I hear the game.

27:10SPEAKER- Oh, is it low latency enough

27:12SPEAKERthat you don't hear your voice echoing?

27:13SPEAKER- No, no, no, sorry, the program is not a monitor,

27:15SPEAKERthe program is if chat says, "Hey, you're too quiet,"

27:17SPEAKERor, "You're too loud," I can turn it up.

27:19SPEAKER- I see.

27:20SPEAKER- Without having to open up the software interface

27:22SPEAKERfor the mixer, which is a ridiculous application,

27:25SPEAKERit means I can do it without losing,

27:26SPEAKERchanging focus over the current Windows app, basically.

27:30SPEAKER- I'm gonna close this loop deck page,

27:31SPEAKER'cause these look really nice,

27:32SPEAKERand I certainly don't need it with an XL already on my desk.

27:36SPEAKER- Yeah, the XL, the thing about it is the XL

27:39SPEAKERdoes kind of everything you want.

27:41SPEAKERThe nice thing about-- - Unless you want a knob.

27:45SPEAKER- I mean, if you want a knob,

27:45SPEAKERyou can just get a knob separate, though.

27:47SPEAKERGet a keyboard with a knob.

27:48SPEAKER- Yeah, it's nice to have it all in one device.

27:50SPEAKERYou know how I am about cables.

27:51SPEAKER- I am aware of your feelings with regard to cables.

27:56SPEAKER- That's L-O-U-P-E deck, to be clear.

27:59SPEAKER- Like the kind of thing you use

28:00SPEAKERto look up close at pictures.

28:03SPEAKERSo the thing that I find about this

28:06SPEAKERis it's kind of like the extreme Home Assistant

28:08SPEAKERand like Google or Apple's HomeKit or

28:14SPEAKERyou know, your smart things or whatever.

28:18SPEAKERThis is a more difficult to set up,

28:20SPEAKERbut it allows you to do much more complicated actions

28:23SPEAKERand allows you to make the buttons do exactly what you want

28:26SPEAKERinstead of getting close enough

28:28SPEAKERor maybe having like three buttons

28:29SPEAKERthat do what you would want to do in one button

28:30SPEAKERor something like that.

28:31SPEAKER- Okay, this is exactly for me, then,

28:33SPEAKERbecause you're talking about Bitfocus, to be clear.

28:34SPEAKER- I'm talking about Bitfocus computing, yeah.

28:36SPEAKER- Yeah, because the Elgato Stream Deck software, it's okay.

28:39SPEAKERBut yeah, I've already run into a couple spots

28:40SPEAKERwhere it's like,

28:41SPEAKERI wish there was a little more configurable behavior here.

28:45SPEAKER- Yes, in terms of like, for example,

28:46SPEAKERthe big one to me, honestly,

28:48SPEAKERis the press and hold on the Elgato software.

28:51SPEAKERDid you ever use that?

28:52SPEAKER- No, I don't use it 'cause it stunk.

28:53SPEAKER- Yeah, it's terrible.

28:54SPEAKERYou can't configure like the length of time

28:56SPEAKERyou need to hold the button down.

28:57SPEAKERAnd the default is roughly,

28:59SPEAKERit seems like five seconds, which is way too long.

29:01SPEAKER- It is a really long time, yeah.

29:02SPEAKER- And there's no visual feedback on the button

29:05SPEAKERwhen it activates and deactivates.

29:06SPEAKERSo you just have to kind of hold it

29:08SPEAKERand kind of just guess when it's long enough.

29:11SPEAKER- You have to have it took to something

29:12SPEAKERthat you can see happen on your screen

29:16SPEAKERso you know when to let go.

29:17SPEAKER- Right, it's real bad.

29:20SPEAKERAnd that's for something,

29:21SPEAKERI would do that for like streaming and recording, right?

29:23SPEAKERLike you don't want to accidentally bump the stream button

29:26SPEAKERand have it in your stream prematurely, but you also,

29:29SPEAKERyeah, you don't wanna have to sit there holding it forever.

29:31SPEAKERAnyway, it sounds like

29:34SPEAKERwhen I wipe this new machine

29:36SPEAKERand get this filthy temp Windows install off of here

29:38SPEAKERand do a real one,

29:40SPEAKERit sounds like I should go straight to bit focus companion

29:42SPEAKERand just skip the Elgato stuff.

29:44SPEAKER- Yeah, Brad, they let you do half presses.

29:46SPEAKER- What?

29:47SPEAKER- So you can do separate actions on key down and key up.

29:51SPEAKER- Oh, wow.

29:52SPEAKER- Yeah.

29:53SPEAKER- Huh?

29:54SPEAKER- Yeah.

29:54SPEAKER- So like it's basically a hold,

29:55SPEAKERlike push it down and something is happening

29:57SPEAKERand then we let off.

29:58SPEAKER- Yeah, so if you would have pushed to mute,

29:59SPEAKERyou can do that.

30:00SPEAKER- What?

30:01SPEAKER- Yeah.

30:02SPEAKER- Okay.

30:03SPEAKER- Yeah.

30:03SPEAKER- Okay.

30:04SPEAKER- Goodbye Elgato software.

30:05SPEAKERThis sounds exactly like what I want.

30:08SPEAKER- It's really good.

30:09SPEAKERIt's a little confusing starting out,

30:10SPEAKERbut once you kind of understand,

30:12SPEAKERit's like every other piece of software ever.

30:13SPEAKEROnce you understand the internal language that you use,

30:15SPEAKERit makes a lot of sense.

30:16SPEAKER- I mean, that's kind of open source stuff in general, right?

30:19SPEAKERLess user-friendly, harder to configure,

30:21SPEAKERbut way more powerful.

30:22SPEAKER- This is very polished by open source standards,

30:25SPEAKERI would say.

30:26SPEAKERAnyway, bit focus companion,

30:28SPEAKERyou can find it at bitfocus.io is the URL.

30:31SPEAKER- Yeah, that's awesome.

30:32SPEAKERI have a couple of other packages that I have one.

30:35SPEAKER- Oh God, I didn't tell you about this.

30:36SPEAKERThe best part, here's the best thing.

30:38SPEAKERThey do a thing, you can, well,

30:41SPEAKERif you don't want to have,

30:43SPEAKERif you're doing all network stuff

30:44SPEAKERand you don't want to have companion running

30:46SPEAKERon your desktop PC and have the screen on all the time,

30:48SPEAKEReven when your PC is off, you could hook it up to a Pi.

30:51SPEAKER- Oh yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

30:52SPEAKEROne of the others is companion Pi here.

30:55SPEAKER- Yeah.

30:56SPEAKEROr if you have like, I mean, this doesn't apply to us

30:59SPEAKER'cause we don't, it's like if you had a stage install

31:02SPEAKERor something like that,

31:03SPEAKERlike if you had a computer backstage on a theater

31:06SPEAKERand you needed to run stuff on it from your sound booth,

31:09SPEAKERyou can do a satellite where it connects to it

31:11SPEAKERover the network, where you run the host

31:12SPEAKERon the computer backstage,

31:14SPEAKERand then you have the satellite running

31:15SPEAKERin the sound booth or whatever

31:18SPEAKERand you don't have to run cables between them.

31:20SPEAKERYeah, the satellite's a little limited is my understanding,

31:22SPEAKERbut I don't, like in a dream world

31:26SPEAKERwhere I'm able to move the streaming stuff

31:27SPEAKERinto the garage, then that might be useful,

31:32SPEAKERbut I'm probably good for now.

31:34SPEAKERAnyway, it's a really neat piece of software.

31:38SPEAKER- That's awesome, that's exciting.

31:39SPEAKERI'm gonna mess with that soon.

31:42SPEAKERI regret to inform you.

31:44SPEAKERI'm just gonna, a little interlude here.

31:45SPEAKEROh, wait, no, I thought the bird had frozen.

31:49SPEAKER- No, the bird's just, the bird's just still.

31:51SPEAKER- The bird is just extremely chill right now.

31:53SPEAKERAlso the extremely like rapid sort of rigid movements

32:01SPEAKERof a bird make it just seem like the frame rate

32:04SPEAKERis incredibly low, like the way a bird moves its head

32:07SPEAKERin these kind of like rigid increments.

32:11SPEAKERIt just makes it look like this is running

32:13SPEAKERat like two frames a second,

32:14SPEAKERbut that's just actually the way the bird moves.

32:16SPEAKER- Yeah, they're fast.

32:17SPEAKERIt's running, let's see, the stats on the Twitch window

32:20SPEAKERthat it's running, I haven't dropped any frames.

32:22SPEAKERWe're good, we're running a full 30 FPS here.

32:25SPEAKER- Good to know, good to know.

32:26SPEAKER- I could turn the frame rate down on the stream though.

32:31SPEAKER'Cause right now I'm doing 60 frames a second

32:33SPEAKERout to Twitch, I think.

32:35SPEAKERAnd I could do the same bit rate at 30 frames a second,

32:37SPEAKERwhich would be double the bit rate per frame.

32:39SPEAKERAnyway, we don't have to go with that.

32:42SPEAKER- Should we talk about my Windows install

32:44SPEAKERand where my PC is at?

32:46SPEAKERAnd also I want to talk about GPU fans.

32:48SPEAKER- I feel like you teed up an incredible segue

32:51SPEAKERfor your filthy Windows install.

32:54SPEAKERSo we should pick that up here.

32:55SPEAKER- It's not, it's not exactly filthy,

32:58SPEAKERalthough it's like, come on, it's filthy.

33:01SPEAKER- Which you would like walking down the street,

33:03SPEAKERcoming back from the grocery store,

33:04SPEAKERthen you're like, hey man,

33:05SPEAKERthere's a Windows 11 disk on the ground there.

33:07SPEAKERHell yeah.

33:09SPEAKER- Never know what you're gonna find

33:10SPEAKERon the sidewalk around here.

33:11SPEAKER- I guess it's a thumb drive now.

33:13SPEAKERI don't think it comes on disks anymore.

33:14SPEAKER- Yeah, I use, what's your standard procedure?

33:17SPEAKERI use the media creation tool typically

33:18SPEAKERand just make a USB stick.

33:20SPEAKER- Yeah, I use the media creation tool,

33:21SPEAKERgrab the latest version almost always,

33:23SPEAKERunless there's a specific reason not to

33:26SPEAKERand install off of that.

33:28SPEAKER- Yeah, the arc of Windows install speed

33:31SPEAKERover the years has already been pretty interesting

33:34SPEAKERin the sense that like 20 years ago,

33:36SPEAKERit took an hour to copy files, process files,

33:40SPEAKERreboot a couple of times, et cetera, et cetera.

33:42SPEAKERLike even on my last machine, seven, six, seven years ago,

33:46SPEAKERit was down to like 15 minutes or something.

33:48SPEAKER- Oh no, if you had a USB three drive

33:51SPEAKERwhen you did the last one onto an SSD,

33:53SPEAKERit was like eight minutes.

33:55SPEAKER- It's, dude, it's like almost instantaneous now.

33:57SPEAKERIt's insane.

33:58SPEAKERIt's like, I don't even have time to get up

33:59SPEAKERand go get a drink before it's like

34:01SPEAKERbasically at the lock and screen ready to go.

34:03SPEAKER- Well, the problem now,

34:06SPEAKERas my computer is more important to me,

34:09SPEAKERboth personally and professionally,

34:11SPEAKERis that the install time is really low,

34:14SPEAKERbut the making shit work right time is very, very high now.

34:17SPEAKER- And that's why I haven't even started on that process yet

34:19SPEAKERuntil I, like my first install I'm on right now,

34:22SPEAKERjust to be clear, what I mean by filthy is like,

34:26SPEAKERI, so for example, modern motherboards,

34:29SPEAKERthis kind of blows my mind, have UEFI setting now.

34:33SPEAKERUEFI being basically a modern BIOS,

34:35SPEAKERwhich apparently operating systems

34:37SPEAKERcan hook into more directly these days.

34:40SPEAKER- Yeah.

34:41SPEAKER- This gigabyte board I've got,

34:42SPEAKERapparently ASUS does the same thing now.

34:44SPEAKERThere is actually a toggle in the BIOS

34:45SPEAKERfor whether you want Windows to install

34:48SPEAKERthe motherboard makers, like all in one software

34:50SPEAKERthat's supposed to do all the drivers for you.

34:52SPEAKER- Oh, is that where that came from?

34:53SPEAKER- Yes, I don't know if I mentioned that

34:55SPEAKERthe last time we talked about this.

34:56SPEAKER- Yeah, you did.

34:58SPEAKER- That's right, I totally did last week.

34:59SPEAKERYeah, like when I got this Windows install done,

35:01SPEAKERlike I said, as soon as I logged in,

35:04SPEAKERit popped up this gigabyte control center and blah, blah,

35:06SPEAKERblah, like, hey, do you want to do X, Y, and Z configuration?

35:10SPEAKER- I think you owe somebody an apology.

35:11SPEAKER- Do I?

35:12SPEAKERWho is that somebody?

35:13SPEAKER- Last week, you blamed that on Windows Update.

35:15SPEAKER- Oh, did I?

35:16SPEAKERI'm sorry, Windows Update.

35:18SPEAKERI was wrong.

35:20SPEAKERI'm sorry I ever doubted you.

35:22SPEAKERWell, I think Windows Update is still the mechanism

35:25SPEAKERthrough which it gets whatever the designated software is.

35:28SPEAKERIt's just that the crazy thing is that it's literally

35:30SPEAKERa BIOS option that you need to disable.

35:32SPEAKERSo you mostly do ASUS boards, right?

35:34SPEAKERI think that's--

35:35SPEAKER- Well, I did gigabyte boards until this most recent one.

35:38SPEAKER- Okay, so I want to say it's Armory Crate

35:40SPEAKERis the ASUS version of this.

35:41SPEAKER- Yep, Armory Crate is a thing that is installed

35:44SPEAKERon my computer pretty much constantly

35:45SPEAKERand I can't get rid of it.

35:46SPEAKER- So yes, you need to go into your BIOS and disable.

35:49SPEAKERI don't know what it would be called there,

35:50SPEAKERbut there is an option you need to disable in there

35:52SPEAKERto stop Windows from forcing that on you.

35:54SPEAKER- Fascinating.

35:56SPEAKER- You know, there's that on here.

35:58SPEAKERI've had a couple of driver installs go sideways

36:00SPEAKERthat I can't get to work right.

36:02SPEAKER- Okay.

36:02SPEAKER- Like the LAN driver, no matter what I do,

36:04SPEAKERpartially because gigabytes driver installer is terrible,

36:07SPEAKERbut it just refuses to update this driver, stuff like that.

36:10SPEAKERYou know, I'm just going to disable that BIOS thing.

36:13SPEAKERI'm also going to do the install offline this time

36:15SPEAKERso it doesn't try to pull in anything weird.

36:18SPEAKER- So you, it's funny, when I built my new machine last year,

36:22SPEAKERI started out with the same thought

36:24SPEAKERand then my install and setup process went so well

36:27SPEAKERthat I was like, oh, I'm just going to, this is fine.

36:29SPEAKERWe're going to ride through.

36:30SPEAKER- Yeah.

36:34SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, I think that this is,

36:38SPEAKERI just have so little time these days

36:40SPEAKERto do this kind of fiddling with stuff that once it's working

36:45SPEAKERI have to live with it, I think, most of the time,

36:46SPEAKERwhich is, which is, doesn't feel great.

36:48SPEAKER- Well, so that's the thing I've done zero fiddling.

36:50SPEAKERLike I haven't actually set anything up on this machine

36:52SPEAKERpartially because I just don't have time during the week.

36:54SPEAKERLike I've had my old PC hooked up at the same time

36:56SPEAKERbecause I just need to do work

36:57SPEAKERand everything's already on there.

36:59SPEAKER- Yeah.

36:59SPEAKER- So this is still an unactivated Windows install.

37:02SPEAKERI haven't put anything on here except Steam

37:04SPEAKERand a couple of benchmark utilities.

37:06SPEAKERSo it's 15 minutes to wipe it

37:08SPEAKERand do a fresh Windows install

37:09SPEAKERand then actually start setting things up

37:12SPEAKERbecause there's nothing of value on here.

37:15SPEAKER- Yeah, the problem on my end is once I have Unreal

37:18SPEAKERand Perforce installed and have pulled down the project

37:20SPEAKERthat I'm pretty committed at that point.

37:22SPEAKER- Yeah.

37:23SPEAKERI've also been doing some GPU benchmarkings,

37:27SPEAKERmaybe not the right word, stress testing.

37:30SPEAKER- Yeah.

37:31SPEAKER- I've been trying to, I've been thinking about GPU cooling

37:33SPEAKERand noise and stuff like that.

37:35SPEAKERAnd I've been, you know, like I've played Cyberpunk on here

37:38SPEAKERand some other ray traced stuff.

37:40SPEAKERI grabbed Doom Eternal, I tried to find some things,

37:43SPEAKERalthough actually Doom's maybe not the best example

37:45SPEAKER'cause it's so goddamn efficient.

37:47SPEAKER- Yeah, Doom runs great on my Steam deck.

37:49SPEAKERIt doesn't impress me on my PC anymore.

37:51SPEAKER- Doom Eternal with everything turned up

37:53SPEAKERand the ray tracing on was still getting something

37:55SPEAKERlike 400, 350, 400 frames a second.

37:58SPEAKER- Yeah, it's stupid.

37:59SPEAKER- Complete nonsense.

38:00SPEAKERIt's perhaps not a good bench or stress test.

38:03SPEAKER- I mean, it's like, well, I think it's a very good,

38:07SPEAKERit's a good benchmark, it's not a great stress test.

38:09SPEAKER- Yes, that's what I mean is it's hard to max out

38:12SPEAKERyour hardware with it 'cause it is so efficient.

38:14SPEAKERBut like I installed FurMark, which I think FurMark

38:17SPEAKERis probably still the best GPU stress test out there.

38:20SPEAKERIt's older.

38:22SPEAKER- FurMark, during the winter sometimes,

38:24SPEAKERif my office is cold and the rest of the house is warm,

38:28SPEAKERsometimes I turn on FurMark and shut the door

38:30SPEAKERfor a few minutes and it warms up the whole office.

38:32SPEAKER- So I tried that yesterday,

38:33SPEAKERexcept it was already a warm afternoon.

38:35SPEAKER- Yeah, that was a bad idea.

38:36SPEAKER- Bad idea, yeah.

38:41SPEAKER- Look, when we moved the maximum PC office,

38:46SPEAKERthey had to put special HVAC in the area

38:48SPEAKERwhere the max PC lab was because the benchmarks

38:52SPEAKERconsistently would overwhelm the air conditioning

38:55SPEAKERin the old office and like the rest of the area around it

38:58SPEAKERwould be freezing cold.

38:59SPEAKERSo we had our own thermostat and a separate HVAC outlet

39:03SPEAKERthat was controlled for the lab.

39:05SPEAKER- That's incredible.

39:06SPEAKER- I just, you know, I've been working with like fairly

39:08SPEAKERmodest mid range hardware for a while.

39:11SPEAKER- Yeah.

39:12SPEAKER- This is the first time in, God,

39:15SPEAKERthis is the first time in probably pushing 20 years

39:16SPEAKERthat I've had like high-end enough hardware

39:18SPEAKERto like pump serious heat into the room.

39:20SPEAKERBut running FurMark for half an hour yesterday,

39:23SPEAKERit was like unbearably hot in this room.

39:25SPEAKERAnd I put my hand behind the computer

39:28SPEAKERwhile that thing was running

39:29SPEAKERand it was quite literally a space heater.

39:31SPEAKER- Oh yeah.

39:32SPEAKER- It just literally felt like hot air

39:33SPEAKERblowing out of a space heater.

39:34SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like 120 degrees coming out the back

39:36SPEAKERof that thing probably.

39:37SPEAKER- So, like you said, we'll probably get back

39:39SPEAKERto fan control soon because I just started using it

39:42SPEAKERand there's a lot there to touch on, but.

39:45SPEAKER- I think fan control might be Turing complete, Brad.

39:48SPEAKER- That's a bold claim, but we'll investigate.

39:51SPEAKERThe reason I bring it up though is like,

39:53SPEAKERso I ran FurMark, like I said, which like maxed the GPU.

39:56SPEAKERI think it hit like 72 C at max under actual load, right?

40:02SPEAKERAnd then I also use fan control to synthetically

40:04SPEAKERjust boost those fans up to max.

40:07SPEAKERBut what I'm wondering is, is any game ever actually going

40:10SPEAKERto push that GPU so hard that it's putting out

40:13SPEAKERthat kind of heat and noise?

40:14SPEAKEROr am I only gonna hit that synthetically

40:16SPEAKERwith these methods?

40:18SPEAKERBecause like I've played Cyberpunk Paths Racing,

40:20SPEAKERand like I said, I can't think of anything

40:22SPEAKERmore demanding than that.

40:23SPEAKERAnd the fans were like not really super audible

40:26SPEAKERplaying that thing ever.

40:28SPEAKER- So the stuff I've had that spins the fans up on the GPU,

40:33SPEAKERand just to be clear, I have the GPU fans capped

40:35SPEAKERat I think 90, 80 or 90% in fan control.

40:39SPEAKER'Cause I would rather it throttle down

40:41SPEAKERthan make that much noise.

40:43SPEAKERIs doing, what's the machine learning image generator?

40:53SPEAKER- Which one, dolly, stable diffusion?

40:54SPEAKER- The one in stable diffusion.

40:56SPEAKERRunning stable diffusion spins it up and down,

40:59SPEAKERbut it's like two minutes, it's like two minutes per.

41:01SPEAKER- Oh, that's fun.

41:02SPEAKER- Yeah.

41:04SPEAKERBaking lights in Unreal with the GPU light mask thing

41:08SPEAKERtook, spins it up pretty hard.

41:10SPEAKERI have never had it turn, run full blast in a game.

41:14SPEAKERLike it's only doing stuff that hits the machine learning

41:16SPEAKERand the GPU, the video parts of the GPU at the same time.

41:23SPEAKERLike nothing, video transcodes, none of that stuff

41:27SPEAKERdoes, gets anywhere close.

41:29SPEAKEREven the AV, like when I was doing some AV1 transcodes,

41:31SPEAKERjust to see what that was about.

41:33SPEAKEREven that didn't get anywhere,

41:34SPEAKERlike it didn't spin it up much past idle even.

41:36SPEAKER- Sure, sure.

41:38SPEAKER- And often, I was gonna say often the GPU fan,

41:40SPEAKERlike right now looking down at my fans,

41:42SPEAKERthe GPU fans are just off because the GPU is cool.

41:44SPEAKER- I was shocked to find that yes,

41:46SPEAKERwhen you're just idling at the desktop

41:47SPEAKERor doing basic 2D stuff,

41:49SPEAKERliterally the GPU fans don't even spin.

41:51SPEAKER- Yeah, if it's under 30%,

41:53SPEAKERI think the GPU fans just turn off.

41:54SPEAKER- Yeah, that's wild to me.

41:56SPEAKERBut okay, maybe I won't worry.

41:57SPEAKERI had been thinking about different noise control options

42:00SPEAKERfor that, but it sounds like it's probably

42:02SPEAKERjust not going to run into load use cases or workloads.

42:05SPEAKER- I mean, no, the thing that will happen

42:07SPEAKERis as you get dust and stuff building up on the fins

42:09SPEAKERinside the cooler and it becomes less efficient,

42:11SPEAKERyou'll have to blast it out

42:12SPEAKERbecause it will start running harder.

42:14SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm on about a three month cycle

42:17SPEAKERfor blowing the computer out anyway,

42:18SPEAKERso that's not a big deal.

42:21SPEAKERI will say.

42:22SPEAKER- I'm sorry, I'm a child.

42:24SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

42:27SPEAKERStraight up task manager has gotten surprisingly granular.

42:30SPEAKERI had not clicked on the GPU tab

42:32SPEAKERin task manager in a long time.

42:33SPEAKERMaybe this is not a new thing,

42:35SPEAKERbut I did not realize they were breaking out

42:37SPEAKERlike kind of every function of that card separately

42:40SPEAKERthat you can track in terms of load.

42:43SPEAKER- Oh, and the performance tab?

42:44SPEAKER- So it's, yeah, you've got 3D video and code,

42:46SPEAKERvideo decode, VR, video processing.

42:52SPEAKERSo yeah, I'm basically talking about like on the CPU view,

42:54SPEAKERyou know, when you can see all the cores, activity, screen,

42:57SPEAKERthis is that, but for GPU and yeah, it's crazy.

42:59SPEAKERLike you can literally break out VR load

43:01SPEAKERon the graphics card from regular 3D.

43:05SPEAKER- Oh, really?

43:06SPEAKER- Legacy overlay, video processing,

43:09SPEAKERI don't even know what copy one and security are,

43:11SPEAKERbut yeah, you get really granular views

43:15SPEAKERinto what the GPU is doing now, it's kind of impressive.

43:17SPEAKER- So it's funny, I think they changed that

43:19SPEAKERon the Windows 11 one,

43:23SPEAKER'cause all I see is 3D, I do see copy.

43:27SPEAKER- You might have to right click

43:28SPEAKERand hit change graph to multiple engines.

43:32SPEAKER- Yeah, I have multiple engines, I see video and code,

43:37SPEAKERvideo decode, I see one that just says copy up here

43:40SPEAKERthat I can't.

43:41SPEAKER- Yeah, so you can, you should be able to copy one,

43:43SPEAKERclick those and change those.

43:44SPEAKERYeah, that's the same view I've got.

43:47SPEAKERAnyway, whatever, I'm just in sort of like number one,

43:51SPEAKEReverything is so fast, number two,

43:52SPEAKERoh, now I wanna tweak, except, you know,

43:56SPEAKERin my old age now it's tweaked down rather than tweak up,

44:00SPEAKERlike forget overclocking,

44:01SPEAKERI just want to make things more efficient and quieter.

44:03SPEAKERSo like, for example,

44:05SPEAKERlike I'm probably also never gonna hit

44:07SPEAKERlike major GPU fan speed issues,

44:09SPEAKER'cause I'm probably gonna constrain the power a little bit

44:11SPEAKERon this card.

44:12SPEAKER- I was gonna say, yeah, at least for right now,

44:16SPEAKERit makes sense too, 'cause there's nothing

44:17SPEAKERthat comes close to hitting the full might of the 4090.

44:22SPEAKER- Also, I mean, if you look around,

44:23SPEAKERboth on GPUs and like these risons,

44:27SPEAKERyou can bring power consumption down a little bit

44:30SPEAKERbecause they are tuned so aggressively

44:32SPEAKERto just drink electricity,

44:35SPEAKERchug it down to boost as much as possible.

44:38SPEAKERYou're losing basically almost no performance

44:40SPEAKERto drop 10, 15% on power consumption

44:43SPEAKERbecause they run cooler,

44:45SPEAKERso they can run at higher clocks for longer.

44:48SPEAKER- So I was gonna say I talked to,

44:50SPEAKERwe talked about this a little bit off camera

44:52SPEAKERwhen we were at PC World building your computer last,

44:55SPEAKERwas it just last week?

44:57SPEAKER- Yes, it's been nine, 10, nine days, 10, nine days.

45:02SPEAKERIt's only been nine days, that feels like a month ago.

45:04SPEAKER- It'll be 10 by the time they hear this.

45:05SPEAKERAnyway, my point was we talked about cooling

45:10SPEAKERand he had expressed interest in the numbers

45:12SPEAKERI was getting off of the liquid cooler and the 13900K.

45:18SPEAKERAnd one of the things Adam suggested was going in

45:24SPEAKERand seeing if there was an Asus setting in my motherboard

45:27SPEAKERthat was just like running at full speed all the time, man.

45:30SPEAKERTurns out there is.

45:31SPEAKER- The fans? - I turned that on, no,

45:33SPEAKERthe CPU.

45:34SPEAKERSo my CPU was running a 5500 megahertz all the time.

45:40SPEAKER- Oh, what?

45:41SPEAKER- Yeah, and yeah, it was making it hotter

45:48SPEAKERthan it needed to be.

45:48SPEAKER- How long has this been going on

45:50SPEAKERsince you built the machine?

45:51SPEAKER- Three months.

45:52SPEAKER- Wait, you don't know, man, it's been like six almost.

45:55SPEAKER- I built them in December.

45:56SPEAKER- Oh, was it December?

45:57SPEAKEROkay. - Yeah, it was December.

45:59SPEAKERSo yeah, that's helped a little bit.

46:04SPEAKERIn fairness, I'm reasonably sure that I turned that off

46:07SPEAKERwhen I bought it and I had to upgrade the BIOS in January

46:10SPEAKERand reset the settings when I did that.

46:12SPEAKERAnd I guess my bet is that I didn't flip it back on,

46:15SPEAKERflip it back off when I did that.

46:16SPEAKERSo anyway, I've put it on my list of settings

46:19SPEAKERto look for in the BIOS.

46:22SPEAKERThe next step is to undervolt a little bit.

46:23SPEAKERI'm gonna bring it down to like a quarter,

46:25SPEAKERan eighth of a volt or something like that

46:26SPEAKERand see what happens.

46:27SPEAKER- Yeah, so on the AMD side these days,

46:29SPEAKERit seems like it's recommended not to undervolt,

46:31SPEAKERbut rather to fiddle with just the power consumption,

46:35SPEAKERnot don't change the voltage,

46:36SPEAKERjust change what the max power draw can be.

46:39SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.

46:40SPEAKER- In fact, I believe that's also the recommendation now

46:41SPEAKERfor graphics cards, at least for Nvidia.

46:43SPEAKERI don't know if AMD cards also support this,

46:45SPEAKERbut most people, like I undervolt my 3080

46:47SPEAKERor did when that machine was active.

46:50SPEAKERBut now people are mostly saying for graphics cards,

46:52SPEAKERdon't undervolt, there's just a kind of max,

46:56SPEAKERI don't know how they describe it,

46:57SPEAKERmax power consumption or whatever.

46:58SPEAKERThere's just a, like kind of a slider now

47:00SPEAKERwhere you can just bring that down by percentage.

47:03SPEAKERSo they say, don't change voltage,

47:04SPEAKERjust say, hey, this can only consume 90%

47:08SPEAKERof the maximum power or something like that.

47:13SPEAKERStuff, I don't know, it just seems like,

47:15SPEAKERis race to the top the inverse of race to the bottom?

47:19SPEAKERDoes that work?

47:20SPEAKERLike it seems like there's kind of a race to the top

47:21SPEAKERamong both graphics and CPU makers lately to just,

47:26SPEAKERlike we've got to get those benchmarks up.

47:27SPEAKERLike we've got to make this thing look like

47:29SPEAKERit's 200 megahertz faster than the competition.

47:31SPEAKERSo we're just going to push everything

47:32SPEAKERas hard as humanly possible.

47:34SPEAKER- I mean, they've kind of always like,

47:36SPEAKERlook, there used to be in the early days of video cards,

47:41SPEAKERNvidia and ATI at the time and the other people

47:45SPEAKERthat were selling chips to third-party vendors had to say,

47:47SPEAKERlook, you can't change the number of the model,

47:51SPEAKERlike if there's a number on your card,

47:53SPEAKERit has to match the number of the GPU

47:55SPEAKERthat's inside the card,

47:57SPEAKERbecause otherwise you're going to confuse the hell.

47:59SPEAKERLike, because people would take like a Radeon 8500

48:03SPEAKERand put 8750 on it if they overclocked it a little bit.

48:06SPEAKERI mean, that's a bad example

48:07SPEAKERbecause they'd already stopped it by then.

48:08SPEAKERBut like in 2000, 2001, 2002, that was a real problem.

48:12SPEAKERThere was all sorts of weirdness.

48:13SPEAKERSo yes, people are always trying to make

48:15SPEAKERthe numbers bigger, Brad.

48:16SPEAKER- Right, right.

48:17SPEAKER- The bigger number, better.

48:18SPEAKER- Yeah, maybe not always.

48:19SPEAKER- Yeah, the point is the Xbox 360

48:21SPEAKERwas better than the PS3, by the way.

48:23SPEAKER- I mean, most of what I'm looking at

48:25SPEAKERis like low single digit changes in performance

48:27SPEAKERfor like 20% less power.

48:29SPEAKERYou know, like that's completely acceptable to me

48:32SPEAKERto keep heat and noise down significantly

48:35SPEAKERand only lose like less than 5%,

48:38SPEAKERmaybe like one to three in some cases.

48:40SPEAKERIn terms of performance, like totally a fair trade.

48:43SPEAKER- I will happily trade a little bit of performance

48:45SPEAKERfor a little bit less noise and a little bit less heat.

48:47SPEAKER- Yeah, well, a lot less, I think, is the lesson.

48:50SPEAKERSo anyway, that is a huge rabbit hole on the AMD side.

48:54SPEAKERThere is like, I don't know if you experienced this

48:57SPEAKERevery time you build a new machine,

48:59SPEAKERyou have to like kind of start from zero

49:01SPEAKERand see what's going on with the platform these days.

49:05SPEAKERIn terms of learning, you know,

49:06SPEAKERlike different things you can tweak to make things.

49:08SPEAKER- When they change the architectures like that,

49:10SPEAKERit's always an issue.

49:12SPEAKER- Right, and so like I'm having to figure out

49:14SPEAKERwhat precision boost overdrive is and like what the,

49:17SPEAKERI believe it's PBT, TDC, and EDC values are,

49:22SPEAKERwhich are different types of power consumption.

49:26SPEAKERStuff changes a lot in between computer builds

49:29SPEAKERis what I'm saying.

49:30SPEAKER- How are you finding the documentation on that stuff?

49:33SPEAKER- Do not believe me.

49:33SPEAKER- Do you go to forums to find out what it means?

49:35SPEAKER- Yes, I am 100% reading like Reddit explainers and stuff.

49:38SPEAKERApparently, actually AMD apparently has a pretty decent

49:41SPEAKERlike YouTube presence, for example,

49:42SPEAKERthey actually do put out a good amount of information

49:44SPEAKERon this stuff, from my understanding.

49:46SPEAKER- I don't want to watch it.

49:48SPEAKERYou shouldn't have to watch a 10 minute video

49:49SPEAKERto find out what an acronym means ever.

49:51SPEAKER- Yes, I am with you on that stuff.

49:54SPEAKERFinding good centralized documentation

49:57SPEAKERon what all this stuff means and how to tweak it

49:59SPEAKERis a little bit tricky.

50:01SPEAKER- Yeah, I was gonna say that's kind of my general complaint.

50:04SPEAKERWe talked about the good stuff

50:06SPEAKERof high-end motherboards last week.

50:08SPEAKERLike if I had a complaint about high-end motherboards,

50:10SPEAKERit's they give you 50 million settings

50:12SPEAKERand the onboard help is like,

50:16SPEAKERlike you hover over it and it's like,

50:18SPEAKER"Hey, what's this EBT setting?"

50:19SPEAKERAnd it says, "This changes the EBT on the FMO

50:24SPEAKERup and down the 10th of 1% per dot."

50:28SPEAKERSo yeah, it's not great.

50:29SPEAKER- I also love that, I mean,

50:32SPEAKERwell, that's kind of what you're describing,

50:33SPEAKERthe contextual help inside the actual interface.

50:35SPEAKERLike it'll be like FMO option, enable, disable,

50:39SPEAKERand the contextual description text will say,

50:42SPEAKERenable slash disable FMO option.

50:45SPEAKERIt's like, "Yep, I got that from the actual option."

50:47SPEAKER- Yep, thanks for the FMOs.

50:49SPEAKER- Yeah, I think I've got this Alder Lake box

50:52SPEAKERthat is my NAS now and I think on the Intel side,

50:55SPEAKERkeeping power down is just a matter of changing

50:57SPEAKERthose PL1, PL2 values and TAO,

51:00SPEAKERif you're familiar with that stuff.

51:02SPEAKERI'm getting a blank stare.

51:04SPEAKER- No, I am not familiar with that stuff.

51:06SPEAKER- Okay, those are, well, we can talk about later.

51:09SPEAKERI don't know if you even care about,

51:12SPEAKERno, no, I mean about constraining your chip or not,

51:16SPEAKERor if you're happy with it where it is, it's probably fine.

51:19SPEAKER- Oh yeah, maybe there's an episode there.

51:23SPEAKERMaybe we should get Adam on to talk about that stuff

51:25SPEAKER'cause he's really into it and it might be a fun time.

51:27SPEAKER- Yes, yes, Adam is super plugged into

51:28SPEAKERwhat's going on with hardware.

51:29SPEAKER- He pays a lot of attention to it.

51:33SPEAKERLike it's a place that I would like

51:34SPEAKERto spend more time learning

51:35SPEAKERand I don't have the time to devote to it right now.

51:38SPEAKER- Yes, it's quite a bit to take in.

51:40SPEAKERAnyway, some days, two weeks ahead of me

51:43SPEAKERof learning the ins and outs of the platform

51:46SPEAKERand making it as efficient as humanly possible.

51:49SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, look, it's always nice

51:53SPEAKERto get a new computer.

51:54SPEAKERIt's always nice to figure out the new thing.

51:59SPEAKERYeah, I mean, it's funny, I'm settling into mine now

52:02SPEAKERand it feels, it's starting to feel

52:04SPEAKERlike the old computer now.

52:06SPEAKER- I was gonna say, you're probably at the point now

52:07SPEAKERwhere it's not the new computer now, it's just the computer.

52:10SPEAKER- Yeah, the next thing for me to do

52:11SPEAKERis to take the old computer and it's,

52:15SPEAKERlike I basically did the fast and dirty move over

52:17SPEAKERof all the old streaming PC stuff off of it,

52:20SPEAKERoff of the old computer onto it

52:22SPEAKERand I need to go through and clean that up

52:23SPEAKERand probably do a clean Windows install

52:25SPEAKERand like strip down from 55 drives

52:29SPEAKERto whatever ridiculous drive configuration I had in there

52:32SPEAKERto like one or maybe two drives

52:36SPEAKERand make it a long-term workable computer

52:41SPEAKERrather than a short-term,

52:44SPEAKERhey, this works good enough computer.

52:46SPEAKER- Yeah, that's a good place to be.

52:47SPEAKERI think the last thing I'll comment on

52:48SPEAKERis just, again, the size of this case.

52:51SPEAKER- It's real big.

52:52SPEAKER- The size of this case.

52:54SPEAKERSo I've been swapping the old and new one in and out

52:56SPEAKERas I move hardware over to the new one,

52:59SPEAKERas I need to hook the old one back up to do work stuff,

53:01SPEAKERet cetera, et cetera, psychologically.

53:05SPEAKER- How's your back?

53:07SPEAKER- It's weird.

53:08SPEAKERIt's actually not heavier than my R6,

53:10SPEAKERwhich is dramatically smaller.

53:12SPEAKERAnd I wonder if they changed metal type

53:15SPEAKERor if they're using less metal in places to make it-

53:18SPEAKER- Do you have spinning platters in the R6?

53:20SPEAKER- I only had one.

53:21SPEAKER- Okay, nevermind then.

53:23SPEAKER- Yeah, that shouldn't matter.

53:24SPEAKERAlso the 7XL has a little bit of flex to it

53:28SPEAKERwhere the 6 feels like it's built like a tank,

53:31SPEAKERlike it is just incredibly rigid and thick and solid.

53:35SPEAKERAnd the 7 feels a little more like svelte,

53:38SPEAKERI guess I would say in terms of like structural integrity.

53:42SPEAKERI don't know if, I don't know what is behind that,

53:45SPEAKERbut the point being like the 7 doesn't feel that much

53:48SPEAKERheavier than the 6, despite being dramatically bigger.

53:53SPEAKERThe thing I was gonna say though-

53:54SPEAKER- That's interesting.

53:54SPEAKER- Yeah, it is a little interesting.

53:55SPEAKERI mean, it's fine.

53:56SPEAKERIt's just a different kind of design, I guess.

53:57SPEAKERBut the thing I was gonna say though,

53:59SPEAKERas I move those two computers in and out of that space

54:01SPEAKERbeside the desk where the computer lives,

54:04SPEAKERthis R6, which is not a small case,

54:07SPEAKERhas started looking comically tiny.

54:09SPEAKER- It's like a baby computer for babies?

54:11SPEAKER- Every time I see it back in its place

54:13SPEAKERafter the 7 has been there for a couple of days,

54:15SPEAKERit's just like that might as well be a mini ITX.

54:18SPEAKERLike how did I ever use a case that small?

54:20SPEAKER- What are you gonna do with the R6 now?

54:22SPEAKER- Probably put the NAS in it.

54:24SPEAKER- Okay.

54:24SPEAKER- So I've got the NAS currently in a defined mini,

54:26SPEAKERwhich is a micro ATX.

54:28SPEAKER- Oh yeah, then you have more space.

54:30SPEAKER- Working in a micro ATX, we've talked about this,

54:32SPEAKERlike working in there,

54:33SPEAKERespecially with six drives in that thing

54:34SPEAKERis just kind of a nightmare.

54:36SPEAKER- Yeah, it'll be cooler too with more air in there.

54:39SPEAKER- Yes, there'll be more air.

54:40SPEAKERI couldn't, it'll make room for a couple more hard drives

54:42SPEAKERif I decide I want to put more in.

54:45SPEAKERIt's just a bigger, more expansive, nicer case.

54:48SPEAKER- Yeah, that makes sense.

54:49SPEAKER- And that means I have three cases in here now.

54:51SPEAKERSo I think that defined mini probably needs to go.

54:54SPEAKER- Well, there you go.

54:57SPEAKER- Yeah, I took one of my Coursera's off

55:00SPEAKERand gave it to a friend the other day.

55:02SPEAKER- Coursera case?

55:04SPEAKER- It was an old Coursera, it was an old Coursera.

55:07SPEAKERBasically, I bought three very similar Coursera,

55:11SPEAKERlike the NAS one was not a quiet case,

55:14SPEAKERbut the two in the office were both quiet cases.

55:17SPEAKERAnd I moved them out so that we could,

55:22SPEAKERI needed to get rid of some of them

55:24SPEAKER'cause I have too many cases here right now.

55:25SPEAKER- Yeah, that's probably the thing to do.

55:27SPEAKERI might actually just donate the defined mini.

55:30SPEAKER- It's hard to find somebody to donate stuff like that to.

55:33SPEAKER- Oh, well, there's a Salvation Army down the street here.

55:36SPEAKER- Don't give stuff to the Salvation Army.

55:38SPEAKER- Yeah, but I get it,

55:39SPEAKERbut I also don't have a lot of options around here.

55:41SPEAKERGoodwill closed, also Goodwill's not great either.

55:43SPEAKER- Goodwill's also not great,

55:45SPEAKERbut Salvation Army is actively bad.

55:48SPEAKER- I get it, but the only other option I really have is to,

55:52SPEAKERwell, okay, actually-

55:53SPEAKER- Even an elementary school in your neighborhood,

55:54SPEAKERcall them and see if they want a computer.

55:56SPEAKER- Okay, fair.

55:57SPEAKERWell, it's just a case.

55:59SPEAKER- Oh, yeah, that's the problem is nobody wants cases.

56:02SPEAKER- That's exactly it, is I don't know who else

56:03SPEAKERI would give it to 'cause it's just a case.

56:05SPEAKER- We can always electronics recycle too.

56:07SPEAKER- Yeah, that's true.

56:07SPEAKERWell, there's no electronics in there, so.

56:09SPEAKER- They'll take the case.

56:10SPEAKER- Really?

56:11SPEAKERIt's just metal and plastic.

56:13SPEAKER- Yep.

56:14SPEAKERWill they break the metal part and melt down the metal

56:16SPEAKERand break the plastic part and send the plastic,

56:18SPEAKERthrow the plastic in the ocean or something?

56:19SPEAKERI don't know what happens to that.

56:20SPEAKER- It does occur to me there is the other option.

56:24SPEAKERJust put it on the street with a sign that says free.

56:26SPEAKER- The classic free sign.

56:28SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, look, that fractal design,

56:30SPEAKERthat is a nice case.

56:32SPEAKERSomebody will take that on the free sign.

56:34SPEAKER- It's pretty good.

56:34SPEAKERI mean, it's too small.

56:35SPEAKERLike Micro ATX is not super well supported these days.

56:38SPEAKER- But you've got an ATX board and it'll be fine.

56:40SPEAKER- Right, yeah, of course,

56:41SPEAKERyou could put a smaller board in there.

56:43SPEAKERThere's still some Micro ATX boards on the market.

56:46SPEAKER- Well, I was gonna say, the other thing is

56:48SPEAKERwe have good luck getting rid of stuff like that

56:50SPEAKERon the Next Door or Facebook free giveaway pages.

56:57SPEAKER- Sure, yeah, I had considered something like that,

57:00SPEAKERbut the hassle of posting an ad

57:01SPEAKERand having to deal with people responding

57:03SPEAKERand that's never a pleasant process.

57:06SPEAKER- Well, okay, so where we are, we just say,

57:08SPEAKERhey, I'm putting this out on the front porch

57:09SPEAKERat three o'clock today.

57:11SPEAKERCome get it if you want it.

57:12SPEAKERAnd then people can come get it in anything.

57:14SPEAKERI do it on Trash J and then if it doesn't make it,

57:16SPEAKERthen it either goes in the trash

57:17SPEAKERor I take it to the electronics recycling

57:19SPEAKERor whatever later.

57:19SPEAKER- That sounds like a low impact option.

57:21SPEAKER- Yeah, it works pretty well.

57:23SPEAKERAnyway, Brad, we've reached the point in the show,

57:26SPEAKERI think, where we've poed our last Paree.

57:31SPEAKER- For now.

57:32SPEAKER- For now, yeah, of course.

57:34SPEAKERI really do think a full fan control episode

57:36SPEAKERis in our future.

57:40SPEAKERThey've added some cool stuff to it lately, man.

57:42SPEAKER- It seems extremely robust.

57:44SPEAKERI'm pretty impressed even just from the little bit

57:46SPEAKERI've poked at it, but that'll probably also be a good place

57:48SPEAKERonce we get to it for me to talk about deeper CPU heat,

57:53SPEAKERvoltage, wattage, power consumption type stuff as well,

57:56SPEAKERjust general efficiency making in this machine.

57:59SPEAKER- Maybe that's the episode,

58:02SPEAKERis how do you make your PCs quiet and efficient

58:03SPEAKERand we get Adam in for that.

58:05SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, that sounds like a good idea.

58:07SPEAKERAnd that's a great, we kind of talked about this

58:09SPEAKERwhen I was trying to decide if I was gonna go Intel or AMD,

58:11SPEAKERlike a non-zero factor in my decision

58:15SPEAKERwas if you have an Intel system,

58:18SPEAKERif you have high-end Intel and I have high-end AMD,

58:20SPEAKERthat's a good way to contrast those platforms

58:23SPEAKERover the coming months.

58:25SPEAKER- Yeah, it's funny as I've done more,

58:27SPEAKERwhen we set this up,

58:28SPEAKERwhen we were talking about this originally,

58:30SPEAKERI wasn't doing a lot of,

58:32SPEAKERI was doing a lot of burst compute

58:34SPEAKERand not a lot of sustained compute.

58:35SPEAKERAnd now all of a sudden with the Unreal stuff,

58:37SPEAKERI'm doing a lot of sustained compute.

58:39SPEAKEROh, well, it'll be fine.

58:41SPEAKERIt turns out it's fine.

58:42SPEAKER- Those tiny cores are not doing it anymore, huh?

58:44SPEAKER- Yeah, it's fine.

58:45SPEAKERMy tiny core, I'm not sensitive about my tiny cores.

58:49SPEAKER- These Cinebench accelerators, as BuildZoid refers to them.

58:53SPEAKER- Yeah, exactly, exactly.

58:55SPEAKER- You have a lot of them though.

58:56SPEAKER- I do have a, there are like,

59:00SPEAKERwhat I will say is Firefox uses those tiny cores

59:02SPEAKERand it uses a lot of them and they have,

59:05SPEAKERlike each tab gets its own core.

59:06SPEAKER- That's crazy, that's actually kind of awesome.

59:08SPEAKERI get it, I get it.

59:09SPEAKER- Yeah, but this is, we should wrap up the show.

59:13SPEAKERSo this is the part of the show

59:14SPEAKERwhere we think our patrons, as always,

59:16SPEAKERBrad and Will Made a TechPod is 100% listener supported.

59:18SPEAKER- Yes.

59:19SPEAKER- I remember how to do this this week

59:20SPEAKER'cause it hasn't been two weeks since we did it last.

59:23SPEAKER- We're kind of back in the groove.

59:24SPEAKERThank you, thank you, patrons, for your support.

59:26SPEAKERThank you for listening to this episode.

59:28SPEAKERHopefully it wasn't too rambly, let us know.

59:30SPEAKER- Yeah, and if you would like to support the show,

59:33SPEAKERyou can find out how to by going to patreon.com/techpod.

59:37SPEAKERAgain, that is patreon.com/techpod,

59:40SPEAKERwhere for five bucks a month,

59:41SPEAKERyou can join the 3,000-ish people who support the show.

59:49SPEAKERYou can get it on the TechPod Discord.

59:51SPEAKERYou can get our monthly patron exclusive episode

59:54SPEAKERwhere we talk about, I mean, all sorts of stuff.

59:58SPEAKERIt's all over, like that one sometimes is really focused

1:00:00SPEAKERand sometimes really all over the place.

1:00:02SPEAKERAnd yeah, and join the Discord.

1:00:05SPEAKERThe Discord's the real secret magic.

1:00:07SPEAKERI actually, this morning I was up, I woke up,

1:00:11SPEAKERI had a headache, so I went to bed real early last night.

1:00:13SPEAKERI woke up at like five o'clock in the morning today,

1:00:15SPEAKERand I popped in the Discord early,

1:00:17SPEAKER'cause there's always people there talking.

1:00:18SPEAKERAnd I was like, "Hey, what do you all think

1:00:19SPEAKER"about this new episode idea?"

1:00:21SPEAKERAnd we talked through the thing

1:00:23SPEAKERthat you and I talked about before.

1:00:26SPEAKERAnd people had really good ideas.

1:00:29SPEAKERSo it's a lovely community for people.

1:00:31SPEAKERThere's a bazillion channels that cover everything,

1:00:34SPEAKERtopics from, "Hey, here's a place to share pictures

1:00:37SPEAKER"of your desk setup, your battle station,

1:00:41SPEAKER"and/or your pets," all the way down to,

1:00:43SPEAKERwe just added a gardening channel

1:00:47SPEAKERto the real life section for folks.

1:00:50SPEAKER'Cause it's, in the northern hemisphere at least,

1:00:52SPEAKERit's garden planting season right now.

1:00:55SPEAKER- It is.

1:00:56SPEAKER- And a lot of lovely stuff happening in there every day.

1:01:01SPEAKERSo yeah, we even have a channel for Australians

1:01:03SPEAKERso they can talk about Australia's stuff.

1:01:04SPEAKER- That's right, by extreme popular request, it turned out.

1:01:10SPEAKER- I thought it was, I thought that everybody else,

1:01:12SPEAKERI thought it was the Canadians that wanted to segregate

1:01:14SPEAKERthe Australians in the Australia channel.

1:01:16SPEAKERBut it turns out the Australians wanted a place

1:01:18SPEAKERto talk about Australia shit where nobody else

1:01:20SPEAKERwould harass them about calling flip-flops thongs.

1:01:23SPEAKER- Look, I am not going to get into beef

1:01:25SPEAKERwithin the Commonwealth.

1:01:26SPEAKERThat's for them to sort out.

1:01:28SPEAKER- Yeah, exactly.

1:01:29SPEAKERNew Zealand, meanwhile, sitting over looking smug

1:01:31SPEAKERon the side.

1:01:32SPEAKER- Simple as.

1:01:33SPEAKER- Yeah, so this week, of course, we're gonna thank

1:01:37SPEAKERour executive producers, dear patrons, as we do every week.

1:01:39SPEAKERSo thank you to Nick Johnston,

1:01:41SPEAKERPaddle Creek Games Makers of Fractured Vale,

1:01:44SPEAKERAndrew Slosky, Brad's Midsize Hoodoo Voodoo Switcheroo.

1:01:48SPEAKERDon't know about that one.

1:01:49SPEAKEROctothorpe Bunnycrimes, Just Wedge, Joel Krauska,

1:01:53SPEAKERTwinkle Twinkie, David Allen, and James Kamik.

1:01:55SPEAKERThank you all so, so much.

1:01:56SPEAKER- Yes, thank you, thank you.

1:01:58SPEAKER- And that'll do it for us this week, Brad.

1:02:00SPEAKERSo we will be back next week with another episode

1:02:03SPEAKERof the Tech Bot.

1:02:04SPEAKERDo you know what next week is?

1:02:04SPEAKER- I do.

1:02:06SPEAKERIt starts with an E and some males.

1:02:10SPEAKER- We're eloping.

1:02:11SPEAKER- Oh, okay.

1:02:12SPEAKER- We're eating, it's the Moji episode.

1:02:16SPEAKER- That's right, finally, it's coming.

1:02:19SPEAKER- We're gonna eat a latte.

1:02:21SPEAKER- Oh, that sounds good.

1:02:22SPEAKERYou couldn't podcast while doing that, but...

1:02:25SPEAKER- I made another latte salad the other day

1:02:27SPEAKERfor a barbecue that was pretty good.

1:02:29SPEAKER- That sounds pretty good.

1:02:30SPEAKER- Yeah, you just mix it, you cut the corn off the kernels

1:02:32SPEAKERand then char it in the pan.

1:02:34SPEAKER- It wasn't quite as good, but it was a lot less messy.

1:02:38SPEAKER- Okay, well, it's not elote, but it's emails, which...

1:02:40SPEAKER- Oh, it's email.

1:02:41SPEAKERWell, that's an underwhelming segue now.

1:02:43SPEAKER- We should try to season the emails a little better.

1:02:45SPEAKER- Yeah, so...

1:02:46SPEAKER- Or questions, rather, sorry, it's questions.

1:02:49SPEAKER- Well, we do questions and emails.

1:02:51SPEAKERWe forgot to do emails last month,

1:02:52SPEAKERso we have a backlog of pretty good emails.

1:02:54SPEAKER- Questions can come in email form,

1:02:56SPEAKERor they can come via the appropriate Discord channel.

1:02:58SPEAKER- That's true.

1:02:59SPEAKERYou can find, if you're in the Discord,

1:03:00SPEAKERyou can post in the Question Seeking Answers channel.

1:03:02SPEAKERIf you're not in the Discord, you can send an email

1:03:04SPEAKERto techpod@content.town, and we will see that email

1:03:08SPEAKERand respond to it, possibly on the show next week.

1:03:11SPEAKERSo thanks for listening, everybody.

1:03:12SPEAKERWe will see you all next week.
