178: Windows on Top of Windows

2023-04-02 · 1:03:18

00:00SPEAKER- Brad, I need an opinion.

00:01SPEAKER- All right, opinion on what?

00:03SPEAKER- I bought something that I kind of feel like

00:06SPEAKERmaybe I should be embarrassed about, but I'm not sure.

00:09SPEAKER- If it's opinion about embarrassments,

00:12SPEAKERyou've come to the right place.

00:13SPEAKER- Okay, so I bought a new, my watch band,

00:16SPEAKERI had one of the woven solo loop watch bands

00:19SPEAKERfor my Apple Watch.

00:20SPEAKERI've had it for a little bit more than a year.

00:22SPEAKERAnd as all the reviews said, it stretched out.

00:26SPEAKER- Oh, is this the Apple made one?

00:28SPEAKER- This is the Apple made one, yeah.

00:29SPEAKERThis is the braided solo loop,

00:30SPEAKERwhich is my favorite watch band ever

00:32SPEAKERthat I've had for the Apple Watch.

00:34SPEAKERBut I've had to, the first one I bought,

00:37SPEAKERI had to size down immediately

00:38SPEAKERbecause I was like, this is too big,

00:39SPEAKEReven after using all their size stuff.

00:42SPEAKERThe second one lasted for a year,

00:44SPEAKERbut now taking it on and off every day to charge,

00:46SPEAKERit's stretched out.

00:46SPEAKERAnd I mean, I do have slender, delicate wrists,

00:51SPEAKERkind of large hands.

00:52SPEAKER- I wouldn't have expected that, but okay.

00:54SPEAKER- I mean, look, this is a great podcast,

00:56SPEAKERbut you know, the hand size to wrist ratio is large.

01:02SPEAKER- I wasn't expecting to get into hand,

01:03SPEAKERhand phrenology on this podcast.

01:06SPEAKER- Look, we don't believe in phrenology here.

01:07SPEAKERThat's our official policy.

01:09SPEAKER- Yes.

01:10SPEAKER- But so I was looking at watch bands and I often,

01:13SPEAKERif I'm buying a watch band for like a single use thing,

01:17SPEAKERlike for example, I want to be able to wear my watch

01:19SPEAKERwhen I'm swimming in the pool and counting laps

01:20SPEAKERor something, right?

01:22SPEAKERThen I'll go to Amazon and I'll buy

01:24SPEAKERthe $10 knockoff cheapo watch band.

01:28SPEAKERBut if I'm buying something

01:29SPEAKERthat's going to be the new daily wear

01:30SPEAKERand I want something that's comfortable enough to sleep in,

01:32SPEAKERI tend to go for the Apple brand ones.

01:35SPEAKER'Cause I find them to blast a little better.

01:37SPEAKER- Sensible.

01:38SPEAKER- So I was looking at watch bands and I was like,

01:39SPEAKER"I want an orange one."

01:40SPEAKERAnd the only orange one that they have right now

01:42SPEAKERis the Apple watch ultra band.

01:46SPEAKER- Wait, the ultra bands are different than regular bands?

01:48SPEAKER- Well, they're bands that only ship with the ultras.

01:52SPEAKER- Only ship with, I see.

01:53SPEAKER- They fit the big normal Apple watch.

01:56SPEAKERSo am I a horrible poser by putting an Apple watch ultra,

02:02SPEAKERlike an obviously Apple watch ultra watch band

02:05SPEAKERon my non Apple watch ultra?

02:08SPEAKER- I don't want to just kill this cold open

02:10SPEAKERbefore it's even started, but I'm just going to say,

02:12SPEAKEReven if you are, you're not half as bad

02:14SPEAKERas anybody who would care that you did that.

02:16SPEAKER- Okay.

02:17SPEAKER(upbeat music)

02:23SPEAKER(upbeat music)

02:46SPEAKER- Welcome to "Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod."

02:48SPEAKERI'm Will.

02:49SPEAKER- I'm Brad, I'm sorry.

02:50SPEAKERI didn't mean to, let's, okay.

02:52SPEAKER- I know this isn't a video podcast,

02:53SPEAKERbut if you just want to show the class your watch band,

02:56SPEAKERwe can actually talk about the band.

02:57SPEAKER- It's orange.

02:58SPEAKERIt has a little titanium hook on the bottom.

03:00SPEAKERI bought the Alpine one with the loops.

03:02SPEAKER- It's rugged.

03:04SPEAKER- It's light is what I liked about it.

03:06SPEAKERAnd it's comfortable enough

03:07SPEAKERthat I think I'll actually sleep with it on.

03:10SPEAKER- That's right, you are a watch sleeper.

03:12SPEAKERI forgot, we've talked about that before.

03:13SPEAKERI don't understand how that's possible, but.

03:15SPEAKER- I know exactly how much sleep I've gotten every night

03:18SPEAKERfor the last 400 days.

03:19SPEAKER- Okay, from a biometric standpoint,

03:22SPEAKERI can see how it would be nice.

03:23SPEAKERBut from a like, there's a foreign object on me

03:25SPEAKERwhile I'm asleep standpoint, I'm not so sure.

03:28SPEAKER- Do you know how many times I've actually consulted

03:30SPEAKERthat information to see how much sleep I've gotten?

03:33SPEAKER- How many?

03:34SPEAKER- Never.

03:34SPEAKERI do get a little notification that's like,

03:37SPEAKER"Hey, you hit your sleep goal last night."

03:38SPEAKER- That's cool.

03:39SPEAKER- I like that.

03:40SPEAKER- Hang on, is there a hidden fourth ring?

03:42SPEAKER- There's not a hidden fourth ring.

03:44SPEAKERThey should give you a sleep ring.

03:45SPEAKERSleep is important.

03:46SPEAKER- I wish that either they would add more rings

03:47SPEAKERor they would give you like customization.

03:49SPEAKERI wish that you could like, for example,

03:51SPEAKERthey have a little meditation app.

03:52SPEAKERI wish you could do a meditation ring.

03:53SPEAKERI wish there were a little more control over.

03:56SPEAKER- That's a really good suggestion.

03:58SPEAKERI like the meditation app.

03:59SPEAKERI find often pretty, like I use the meditation app

04:03SPEAKERmore than I ever thought I would.

04:05SPEAKERBut the sleep thing, I set the sleep stuff up

04:08SPEAKERin Apple Health years ago and then never used it

04:12SPEAKERwhen I had the phone, but with the watch,

04:14SPEAKERI use it all the time.

04:16SPEAKERAnd it like, I don't know, I feel good when it's like,

04:20SPEAKER"Hey man, you've done four, five days in a row

04:22SPEAKER"where you hit your sleep goal five days."

04:24SPEAKERThat seems good.

04:25SPEAKER- That's pretty good.

04:26SPEAKER- Did not hit the sleep goal last night, sadly, I know.

04:29SPEAKERBut--

04:30SPEAKER- Does that happen on streaming nights?

04:31SPEAKERI saw that you, or wait, did you stream last night?

04:34SPEAKER- Friday night I usually stream, yeah.

04:35SPEAKERFriday night I usually play some Fortnite with my friends.

04:37SPEAKER- What, do you go to like midnight generally?

04:39SPEAKER- Yeah, when I used to do PUBG customs,

04:41SPEAKERI always went to midnight.

04:43SPEAKERAs we've gotten older and a couple of my friends

04:45SPEAKERthat I play with are in central time,

04:47SPEAKERso they go to bed a little bit earlier sometimes these days.

04:51SPEAKER- I don't know about you, but I find if I play,

04:53SPEAKERespecially like multiplayer with people,

04:54SPEAKERbut just if I stay up too late playing games,

04:57SPEAKERit kind of sabotages my ability to sleep for a while.

05:00SPEAKER- So in the early days of a game that I'm learning,

05:05SPEAKERif I get really cranked up about it,

05:07SPEAKERthen I definitely have that.

05:09SPEAKEROnce I've kind of, when the meta is established

05:14SPEAKERand I understand what I'm into,

05:15SPEAKERI don't get the adrenaline highs.

05:18SPEAKERNothing ever compares to the like 2017 PUBG.

05:23SPEAKERI stayed up until two o'clock in the morning playing PUBG

05:26SPEAKERand oh shit, I'm not gonna fall asleep until 5 a.m. now

05:28SPEAKER'cause I'm too tuned up.

05:29SPEAKER- That 1.45 a.m. chicken dinner is-

05:32SPEAKER- Oh God, it's so good.

05:34SPEAKER- Yeah, one last thing.

05:36SPEAKERFirst of all, I promise we did not set out

05:38SPEAKERto do an all Apple episode here.

05:40SPEAKERIt's kind of just trending that way,

05:41SPEAKERalthough I think the core topic is a little broader

05:43SPEAKERthan just Apple, but I do have one other watch thing

05:47SPEAKERto mention.

05:48SPEAKERI've had the most triumphant moment since I got this watch.

05:52SPEAKERI got a health notification the other day that said,

05:54SPEAKER"Hey, your cardio recovery has improved."

05:56SPEAKER- Ooh.

05:57SPEAKER- Like I've been trying to do a lot of exercise

05:59SPEAKERthe last couple of months and it straight up was like,

06:02SPEAKERcardio recovery is just sort of like,

06:04SPEAKERonce you reach elevated active heart rate,

06:05SPEAKERhow fast it comes back down.

06:07SPEAKER- That's awesome.

06:08SPEAKER- Which I guess is one measure of your overall health.

06:10SPEAKER- Yeah.

06:11SPEAKER- And it was just like,

06:12SPEAKERbecause I had been staring at my VO2 max,

06:14SPEAKERI don't know if you ever dig into the health stuff.

06:16SPEAKER- I often think about my VO2 max.

06:18SPEAKER- Doesn't everybody?

06:19SPEAKER- Yeah.

06:20SPEAKER- What is that?

06:20SPEAKERI forget, that's something like-

06:21SPEAKER- It's the oxygen, it's the carrying capacity

06:23SPEAKERof your blood for oxygen or something.

06:25SPEAKER- Yes, exactly.

06:26SPEAKERSo I guess like, the higher that is also the better,

06:28SPEAKERbut still, this was not that, but still.

06:31SPEAKERJust seeing a metric that is my physical function improve,

06:37SPEAKERlike that's possibly the best type of number to see go up.

06:41SPEAKER- So when I got COVID last year,

06:43SPEAKERI was a little bit wobbly afterwards,

06:45SPEAKER'cause I got the real tireds and it gave me the,

06:50SPEAKERhey, we've noticed your walking steadiness has decreased.

06:53SPEAKER(laughing)

06:55SPEAKERI was like, oh no, it thinks I'm 90.

06:58SPEAKER- I know.

06:58SPEAKER- The watch thinks I'm really old.

06:59SPEAKERI got this thing just in time to measure

07:01SPEAKERthe gradual decline to senescence.

07:03SPEAKER- Think they should probably,

07:04SPEAKERmaybe they should build into Siri the ability to be like,

07:06SPEAKERhey, I've been ill, hey, this is going on,

07:09SPEAKERmaybe don't scold me quite as much right now.

07:11SPEAKER- Yeah, like I would say the vigorous 29 minute exercise

07:16SPEAKERright now would let you close your activity ring

07:18SPEAKERfor the end of the day.

07:19SPEAKERAnd when I was laying there coughing up three lungs,

07:23SPEAKERit wasn't great, that wasn't helpful.

07:26SPEAKERBut so, you're just a stock Solo,

07:30SPEAKERyou're just the normal, the standard watch band, right?

07:33SPEAKERThe plastic one with the hooks?

07:35SPEAKER- Yeah, what is this?

07:35SPEAKERA silicone, I think is what it is.

07:37SPEAKER- It's silicone, yeah.

07:38SPEAKER- There is a name for this, Solo Loop or-

07:40SPEAKER- The Loop is the one that stretches

07:42SPEAKERthat doesn't have the hooks.

07:43SPEAKER- I forget what the name is for this one.

07:44SPEAKER- I think it's just the Solo band.

07:46SPEAKER- That might be right.

07:47SPEAKERIt's the one with the little metal stud

07:48SPEAKERthat you just stick through the hole.

07:49SPEAKERLike I got it thinking like,

07:51SPEAKERoh, that'll be my exercise band

07:52SPEAKERand I'll get something like more stylish.

07:55SPEAKER- Yeah.

07:55SPEAKER- But I've just kind of stuck with it.

07:57SPEAKER- I really like the ones that don't have the clasps.

08:03SPEAKERSo the other choice on this one was to get one of the ones

08:06SPEAKERthat has the, that's like the fold over Velcro,

08:09SPEAKERsorry, hook and loop closure, Apple says.

08:12SPEAKER- Wait.

08:13SPEAKER- They don't say Velcro

08:14SPEAKER'cause it's not Velcro brand Velcro.

08:15SPEAKER- Wait, is the word Velcro beneath Apple?

08:18SPEAKER- No, Velcro is a registered trademark.

08:20SPEAKERSo if they're not using Velcro brand Velcro,

08:22SPEAKERthey'll use, they call it hook and loop.

08:24SPEAKER- I didn't know that was still a thing.

08:25SPEAKER- Uh-huh.

08:26SPEAKER- I assume patents and everything expired ages ago, but.

08:29SPEAKER- I mean, but the trademark is,

08:31SPEAKERtrademarks are forever if you use them.

08:33SPEAKER- Yeah, now it's just reputation.

08:35SPEAKER- The, so that was the other choice was the nylon.

08:41SPEAKERIt was half the price, but I figured I'd try this one first.

08:45SPEAKERI was a little bit worried that the hook would scratch

08:47SPEAKERmy laptop or wrist rest or whatever,

08:51SPEAKERbut it doesn't, my arms are long enough.

08:53SPEAKERIt doesn't happen, it doesn't hit that way, so it's fine.

08:57SPEAKER- Wearable technology, it's kind of cool.

08:59SPEAKER- Yeah, but now I'm an alpine-er, Brad.

09:01SPEAKERI can go mountain climbing now, I have the right watch band.

09:03SPEAKER- That's right, that's right.

09:04SPEAKER- I'm curious to see what happens with the Apple,

09:06SPEAKERI mean, with the watch line going forward,

09:08SPEAKERnow that the Ultra is out there, like, is that flat face

09:12SPEAKERgonna trickle down to the regular line?

09:14SPEAKER- Look, the flat face, my next watch, I think,

09:17SPEAKERis probably gonna be an Ultra, I would bet.

09:19SPEAKERI will pony up the extra couple hundred bucks

09:21SPEAKERto get the fancy boy.

09:23SPEAKER- I seriously considered it, it's very expensive,

09:25SPEAKERbut the flat face and bigger screen were very appealing,

09:28SPEAKEReven though I don't need any of the other features,

09:30SPEAKERbut I just went with the regular.

09:31SPEAKER- Well, the flat face and three-day battery life

09:33SPEAKERis the one for me. - Wait, three days?

09:35SPEAKER- Three days. - Oh, my God.

09:36SPEAKER- Which, if they say three days,

09:38SPEAKERthey say my watch is a one-day battery life,

09:41SPEAKERso that means I'd probably get five the way I use it.

09:44SPEAKER- Huh, okay, I didn't realize the battery life was,

09:47SPEAKERall right, well, something to think about for--

09:49SPEAKER- But I mean, here's the thing,

09:50SPEAKERyou came in not knowing if you even wanted a watch,

09:52SPEAKERso you dipped your toes in.

09:55SPEAKER- Where I landed was I'm just gonna get

09:56SPEAKERthe most basic model that is the cheapest

09:58SPEAKERand see if I even like this, and turns out it's very useful.

10:01SPEAKER- Yeah, it's a handy thing.

10:03SPEAKERI listened to music on Vine this morning

10:06SPEAKERwhile I was laying in bed, and I was like, I can't sleep,

10:08SPEAKERso I just grabbed my AirPods and jammed them in

10:10SPEAKERand connected the AirPods to the watch

10:12SPEAKERand played music off of Apple Music from the watch.

10:14SPEAKER- Streaming straight from the watch.

10:16SPEAKER- Straight from the watch to the ears.

10:17SPEAKER- Weird coincidence, I also finally paired

10:20SPEAKERsome Bluetooth headphones with my watch this week.

10:22SPEAKERI've been trying to put podcasts on it,

10:23SPEAKER'cause when I go out to walk, or increasingly,

10:25SPEAKERI hopefully start running,

10:27SPEAKERI used to not have a big phone bouncing around

10:29SPEAKERin your pocket. - Yeah, turns out.

10:31SPEAKER- Just because you want to play music or podcasts off of it,

10:34SPEAKERso, oh my God, getting podcasts directly onto this watch

10:38SPEAKERis a nightmare. - Do you use Overcast?

10:40SPEAKER- Yes, that was the only thing I could figure out to do.

10:43SPEAKERI typically just use the Apple Podcast app,

10:45SPEAKER'cause it's there and it's good enough on the phone,

10:48SPEAKERbut it's completely unusable. - It's not good enough.

10:50SPEAKER- For the watch, completely unusable.

10:51SPEAKER- No, it's not good enough.

10:53SPEAKERThe Overcast integration's pretty good in my experience.

10:56SPEAKERI think you used to be able to just hit the thing

10:58SPEAKERand send it to it, but I don't think

11:00SPEAKERit works that way anymore.

11:00SPEAKER- You can't, so you have to add it to a playlist

11:03SPEAKERon the phone. - That's right.

11:04SPEAKER- And you can manually download it,

11:06SPEAKERbut it's like, okay, now you have to keep the face on

11:09SPEAKERfor the next 20 minutes, 'cause it's a very slow download,

11:11SPEAKERand the time I tried that, it got 80% of the way there

11:14SPEAKERand failed.

11:16SPEAKERThe other option is basically just say like,

11:17SPEAKERhey, anything in the playlist,

11:19SPEAKERjust sync it when it's on power,

11:20SPEAKERso that's what I've been doing, which is--

11:21SPEAKER- Oh, that's nice. - A little inconvenient,

11:23SPEAKERbut at least it works. - Yeah, yeah.

11:27SPEAKERWhat are we talking about this week, though, Brad?

11:28SPEAKER- Let's put all this Apple business aside.

11:31SPEAKER- Yes, and talk about something totally not Apple-related,

11:36SPEAKERyour iPad Pro.

11:37SPEAKERNo, actually, we're gonna talk about a sort of trip report

11:40SPEAKERnow that you've been on an M2 iPad Pro for a few months,

11:43SPEAKERbut I think also just more broadly like,

11:45SPEAKERhey, this recent market segmentation

11:49SPEAKERof sort of tablet/laptop hybrid foldable,

11:53SPEAKERlike this whole layer that now exists

11:55SPEAKERbetween traditional tablet and traditional laptop,

11:58SPEAKERis that feasible?

12:00SPEAKERAnd I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

12:02SPEAKER- Yeah, so end of last year, I was looking,

12:05SPEAKERI needed a laptop 'cause my 2016 Razer Blade,

12:13SPEAKERit's like their MacBook Pro size case,

12:17SPEAKERbut it's mostly filled with GPU

12:19SPEAKERand it has like a 40-minute battery.

12:21SPEAKER- I'm guessing you bought that for VR demos.

12:22SPEAKER- I bought that specifically so I could do VR demos, yeah,

12:25SPEAKER'cause I could carry that in a normal ass bag

12:27SPEAKERand it wasn't like an 18-inch gaming laptop

12:29SPEAKERthat weighed 18 pounds or anything like that.

12:32SPEAKERIt was very loud, had terrible battery life,

12:35SPEAKERand I needed a new portable computer,

12:39SPEAKERnot necessarily a laptop, so I needed something.

12:41SPEAKERThese days, I work on a desktop PC at my desk,

12:45SPEAKERbut when I'm traveling,

12:46SPEAKERoften I can have something a lot lighter,

12:48SPEAKERlike I'm doing presentations, stuff like that.

12:50SPEAKERI don't necessarily need the full big boy computer.

12:58SPEAKERSo I looked at what was around.

13:00SPEAKERI kind of looked at surfaces a little bit

13:01SPEAKER'cause I really liked the,

13:03SPEAKERI think they called it the Surface Book,

13:04SPEAKERwhich was the laptop with the folding metal hinge

13:07SPEAKERfrom like 2013 to 2017.

13:10SPEAKERI think they stopped that middle of last decade,

13:13SPEAKERbut you could pop off the screen.

13:15SPEAKERIt would be just a tablet.

13:16SPEAKERYou could jam it in and it would be a laptop.

13:17SPEAKERIt was expensive at the time,

13:19SPEAKERbut the thing I realized when I was looking at this

13:22SPEAKERis I wasn't gonna save money by doing an iPad Pro

13:26SPEAKERand a keyboard.

13:28SPEAKERI was going to end up about the same

13:31SPEAKERas what I would spend on a MacBook Pro

13:35SPEAKERor a comparable Windows laptop.

13:39SPEAKERSo I needed something to take on trips,

13:42SPEAKERbut I also wanted something I could use around the house

13:44SPEAKERas like my sitting on the couch computing

13:48SPEAKERso I wouldn't be on my phone

13:49SPEAKERfor the entire time I was sitting out there

13:51SPEAKER'cause it hurts a lot of reasons not to be on your phone.

13:55SPEAKERI wanted something with real battery life

13:56SPEAKER'cause I was sick and tired of 40 minutes

13:58SPEAKERof battery on the razor.

14:00SPEAKERI wanted a decent keyboard

14:01SPEAKERthat I actually do some writing on

14:02SPEAKER'cause I do a fair amount of writing

14:04SPEAKERfor both work and fun.

14:09SPEAKERI've done show notes for this podcast

14:10SPEAKERon a touchscreen keyboard before and it sucks.

14:13SPEAKERIt's not great.

14:14SPEAKER- Yeah, yes, nobody wants to do that.

14:15SPEAKERI think that's the aspect of this

14:17SPEAKERI'm the most interested in hearing about

14:18SPEAKERis it's not a full laptop keyboard.

14:21SPEAKERI guess it's maybe, is it floppy?

14:23SPEAKERI don't know.

14:23SPEAKERIt's obviously it's not like the base of a laptop

14:26SPEAKERthat's attaching to this thing

14:27SPEAKERbut is that style of detachable keyboard

14:30SPEAKERlike a valid replacement or not for a laptop?

14:33SPEAKERThat's the thing I'm curious about.

14:34SPEAKER- We can get into it.

14:38SPEAKERAnd then the other thing is I wanted,

14:39SPEAKERlike I was curious about drawing

14:41SPEAKER'cause I do a fair amount of like game design stuff.

14:44SPEAKERWe do a lot of drawing.

14:45SPEAKER- Oh, I didn't even think about that, yeah.

14:47SPEAKER- Yeah, like there's a lot of like,

14:48SPEAKERhey, I need to sketch something 'cause it's just easier

14:50SPEAKERand since we're all virtual being able to pull out the iPad

14:55SPEAKERand sketch something real quick

14:56SPEAKERand then send it into Teams or whatever

14:58SPEAKERis incredibly valuable to me.

15:00SPEAKER- Even if you're not like an artist sketching an illustration

15:02SPEAKERI'm sure just like diagramming something out is way faster.

15:06SPEAKER- Yeah, like say if you're trying to think of an example

15:11SPEAKERthat's not real, but like when I'm diagramming,

15:15SPEAKERwhen I was diagramming out how the flow

15:19SPEAKERof the mall holdout was gonna work,

15:21SPEAKERit was really nice to just be able to draw

15:23SPEAKERa vertical cylinder and then show that I wanted people

15:26SPEAKERto move from the bottom of the top or the different options

15:29SPEAKERand then see what people thought, right?

15:31SPEAKER'Cause it was one of those 500 words

15:34SPEAKERor like three drawings situations.

15:36SPEAKER- Sure, sure.

15:38SPEAKER- So yeah, I looked at everything was out there.

15:40SPEAKERI didn't want a MacBook 'cause no touch screen.

15:43SPEAKERAnd really, I didn't want a full PC

15:47SPEAKERbecause I didn't want the maintenance overhead

15:49SPEAKERof having another PC in the house.

15:50SPEAKER'Cause like with the Razor, it's unwieldy

15:54SPEAKERand like I use it infrequently enough

15:57SPEAKERthat when I did turn it on, it was always like,

16:00SPEAKERokay, I gotta install 50 Windows updates.

16:03SPEAKERI gotta update Dropbox.

16:04SPEAKERIt's gotta download three terabytes of stuff

16:06SPEAKERfrom my Dropbox folder.

16:07SPEAKERI've gotta update the video card drivers.

16:10SPEAKERI've gotta update the sound.

16:11SPEAKERLike it was like two days before I go on a trip,

16:15SPEAKERI'd have to open it up and plug it in

16:17SPEAKERand just leave it running for a while

16:18SPEAKERand then come back and hit a couple of buttons

16:20SPEAKERand then leave it running for a while, right?

16:21SPEAKERIt was a pain in the ass.

16:23SPEAKERSo I wanted something that was gonna be convenient enough

16:24SPEAKERthat I used it all the time,

16:27SPEAKERwhich is why I ended up getting the iPad Pro.

16:29SPEAKERAnd like when I started on this path,

16:31SPEAKERI went and read a bunch of the Mac sites

16:33SPEAKERand the takeaway from all of the Mac people,

16:36SPEAKERlike the journalists who write about this stuff

16:38SPEAKERall the time is, man, it's really bullshit

16:40SPEAKERthat the iPad isn't as capable as the MacBook.

16:45SPEAKERLike we should be able to run Mac OS on the iPad

16:48SPEAKERfor what it costs.

16:49SPEAKER- Oh, they're talking from a sort of UX perspective

16:51SPEAKERand like, you know, what is the interface on this thing?

16:53SPEAKERNot specific, not a technical spec divide,

16:56SPEAKERbut more of a, what does Apple let you run on this?

16:59SPEAKER- Both kind of, like it's like an ecosystem thing.

17:01SPEAKERIt's like, hey, look, these two things cost the same thing.

17:04SPEAKERThey're running basically the same hardware.

17:06SPEAKERWhy don't they, why can't you use,

17:08SPEAKERwhy don't they let the users choose?

17:09SPEAKERAnd I'm like, well, clearly you people

17:11SPEAKERwho are writing about Apple for the last 30 years

17:13SPEAKERhave never used an Apple product before.

17:14SPEAKER- Have you ever observed the functioning

17:16SPEAKERof the corporation Apple before?

17:20SPEAKERYeah, though the iPad's moving to the M series,

17:24SPEAKERSOCs, I think is why this thing is actually,

17:26SPEAKERthis is actually such an interesting topic now

17:27SPEAKERis that that only happened three-ish years,

17:31SPEAKERwhen was the first M1 iPad?

17:33SPEAKER- This is the second iPad Pro,

17:34SPEAKER'cause the M1 iPad Pro and then the M2 iPad Pros,

17:37SPEAKERand that's it.

17:38SPEAKERAnd there's also iPad Airs with M1s as well.

17:40SPEAKER- Oh, do the Airs have M's now?

17:42SPEAKER- Yeah, the Airs have M's now.

17:44SPEAKER- So is that officially, I should maybe look this up,

17:46SPEAKERis that all the iPads are now on M's instead of A's?

17:49SPEAKER- No, so the iPad iPad and the iPad Mini

17:52SPEAKERare still A14s or A12s, I think.

17:55SPEAKER- The part where the Air is a superior

17:58SPEAKERand more capable product to the regular,

18:00SPEAKERlike I can't get my head,

18:02SPEAKERAir to me sounds like a light and fluffy

18:04SPEAKERand like baseline or minimal.

18:07SPEAKERSo the Air being the one that's more powerful

18:09SPEAKERjust from a branding standpoint is weird, anyway.

18:11SPEAKER- Well, so the Air comes,

18:13SPEAKERthe Air uses the same accessories as the Pro,

18:16SPEAKERthat's the differentiator.

18:17SPEAKERSo there's a version of the first Rev of the Apple Pencil

18:21SPEAKERworks on the iPad iPad,

18:23SPEAKERthe second Rev works on the Air and the Pro,

18:27SPEAKERsame thing for the Magic Keyboard.

18:28SPEAKERIt's the, if you get the right size iPad,

18:32SPEAKERthe same Magic Keyboard will work with the iPad Air

18:34SPEAKERand the iPad Pro as well as the Apple Pencil too.

18:38SPEAKER- Okay, that's cool.

18:40SPEAKERAnyway, yes, as you say, though, that high-end iPads

18:43SPEAKERnow have essentially the same horsepower.

18:46SPEAKERI mean, with like battery life

18:47SPEAKERand clock speed differences or whatever,

18:49SPEAKERbut basically the same thing that's in the laptops now.

18:52SPEAKER- Yeah, and if you buy a iPad Air Pro

18:55SPEAKERwith like a reasonable amount of space,

18:57SPEAKERlike I bought the 256 gig model,

18:59SPEAKERwhich has eight gigabytes of RAM,

19:02SPEAKERyou can buy those up to like two terabyte versions now,

19:04SPEAKERwhich I assume are people are using in the film industry.

19:07SPEAKER- Jeez, yeah.

19:07SPEAKER- So it's like, if you think about it,

19:10SPEAKERit's a pretty, with the Thunderbolt port and all that,

19:13SPEAKERit's a pretty good way to like,

19:17SPEAKERit's a nice monitor for your film,

19:21SPEAKERlike looking at large quantities of weird resolution

19:24SPEAKERand weird codec films.

19:25SPEAKER- Sure, yeah, and they go up to like 13 inch now

19:29SPEAKERis the biggest one, is that right?

19:30SPEAKER- Well, nine, I think is the big one, yeah.

19:34SPEAKERAll the iPad Air, iPad Pros have eight gigs of RAM

19:37SPEAKERuntil you get to the 16 gig version,

19:39SPEAKERuntil you get to the one terabyte and two terabyte versions,

19:42SPEAKERwhich are 16 gigs.

19:43SPEAKER- Wow, no kidding.

19:45SPEAKERGod, that is like literally the guts

19:46SPEAKERof a laptop in there, that's wild.

19:48SPEAKER- Yeah, the only difference is

19:50SPEAKERyou have to buy the keyboard separately,

19:51SPEAKERwhich is expensive, it's like 300 bucks.

19:53SPEAKER- What?

19:54SPEAKERI mean, again, Apple, but jeez, man.

19:57SPEAKER- Well, okay, so it's a keyboard and a stand

19:59SPEAKERand it has the interface for plugging it in

20:02SPEAKERand it has a backlit keyboard and a track pad

20:06SPEAKERand the keyboard's actually good, is the thing I'll say.

20:08SPEAKERIt's not like some janky touch keyboard

20:10SPEAKERor like the weird fabric things

20:12SPEAKERthat they used to put on services 10 years ago.

20:14SPEAKER- How does it, does it interface wirelessly

20:16SPEAKERwith the tablet, I assume?

20:17SPEAKER- It has, no, it's not, it has a physical connector.

20:20SPEAKER- It does, weird.

20:21SPEAKER- There's like three little pins on the back of the iPad

20:26SPEAKERand it connects to those and those provide power and data.

20:29SPEAKER- So I'll just mention, I have the, I believe 2017 iPad Pro.

20:35SPEAKER- Like an A12 or A10 probably, A9?

20:39SPEAKER- A10, yeah, A10, 11, 12, somewhere around there.

20:42SPEAKERIt was the last, it was the last iPad Pro

20:44SPEAKERwith the physical home button on it.

20:45SPEAKER- Yeah, and you have the three connectors on the side

20:47SPEAKERfor that one.

20:48SPEAKER- I do have the little three little dots there as well.

20:51SPEAKER- It's the same thing.

20:52SPEAKER- Yeah.

20:53SPEAKER- You have an audio jack on yours, that's fancy.

20:55SPEAKER- Mine still has a headphone jack.

20:56SPEAKER- Wow, so, okay, so from an SOC perspective,

21:00SPEAKERthe difference is that the M chips have eight cores,

21:03SPEAKERfour big, four little, I think they have more GPU cores

21:08SPEAKERthan the A cores.

21:09SPEAKERThe A cores, A series cores have six CPU cores

21:12SPEAKERinstead of eight and they're slower and less capable.

21:15SPEAKERSo like, when you look at benchmarks,

21:16SPEAKERit's a pretty significant jump,

21:18SPEAKERespecially when you get to multi-threaded stuff.

21:20SPEAKERThere's dual channel memory on the M chips

21:23SPEAKERversus single channel on the A chips.

21:25SPEAKERSo it's like half memory bandwidth, stuff like that.

21:28SPEAKER- A is on a bigger process node.

21:30SPEAKER- They are on the same process

21:31SPEAKERif you get the same generation now,

21:33SPEAKERbut I think they're both five nanometer now,

21:34SPEAKERbut looking at Geekbench scores and stuff like that,

21:39SPEAKERit was, I mean, I don't think you would notice,

21:43SPEAKERbut, and realistically, the choice I was making

21:45SPEAKERwasn't between the Pro and the iPad.

21:47SPEAKERiPad was between the Pro and the Air probably, but anyway.

21:52SPEAKERSo the other, the difference from a user perspective though,

21:57SPEAKERis that there's three kinds of multitasking on the Pros.

22:02SPEAKERThere's the old side-by-side stuff

22:03SPEAKERthat's been on the iPad forever,

22:04SPEAKERwhere you can like open two windows

22:06SPEAKERand kind of change the ratio of screen allotted to each one.

22:10SPEAKERThere's this thing called swipe, swipe away,

22:15SPEAKERscreen slide, sorry, slide over.

22:18SPEAKER- Sure.

22:18SPEAKER- Where like you can put like just the edge of the window on

22:23SPEAKERand go back to the desktop and open something else

22:25SPEAKERand then switch back and forth between them easily.

22:27SPEAKER- That's one, assuming that I'm thinking

22:29SPEAKERabout the same feature you are,

22:30SPEAKERthat's one that I find myself fumbling into on my Pro.

22:33SPEAKER- Yeah, often you hit the wrong button

22:35SPEAKERand that's where you end up.

22:36SPEAKER- And then like, I've never felt more like,

22:39SPEAKERI don't want to say like my parents,

22:41SPEAKERbut just like, let's say the older generation

22:43SPEAKERthat struggles with new technology,

22:44SPEAKERthen I have stumbling into some of the newer

22:47SPEAKERiPad multitasking features of just like,

22:50SPEAKERwell, why did this window just get slid over

22:52SPEAKERto the one third of the screen instead of the whole screen?

22:55SPEAKERHow do I dismiss this?

22:56SPEAKERHow do I make it big again?

22:57SPEAKERWhat do I do?

22:58SPEAKERHow do I start flailing around?

23:00SPEAKER- Well, and then the third one on the Pros is stage manager.

23:04SPEAKER- Okay, and that's new, right?

23:05SPEAKER- That's new, newish, I think it started with the M's.

23:10SPEAKER- Oh, maybe it's older on the iPads.

23:13SPEAKERSo I believe that just got rolled into Mac OS

23:15SPEAKERin the last update last fall.

23:17SPEAKER- That would make sense.

23:17SPEAKERIt basically replaces their multi desktop

23:20SPEAKERwindow manager thing.

23:23SPEAKERSo you can have windows on top of each other on the iPad now.

23:26SPEAKERYou can have like multiple windows open.

23:27SPEAKERYou can have a dock, you can have multiple sets of windows.

23:31SPEAKERYou can have like last time when I was doing show notes,

23:34SPEAKERI had Firefox and the notes open in Google docs.

23:39SPEAKERAnd then I also had a procreate window

23:41SPEAKERand a settings window open on a different selection

23:46SPEAKERof windows and you can switch back and forth between them.

23:48SPEAKERIt's really easy and really fast.

23:50SPEAKERAnd it lets me like, it is janky in that it is

23:57SPEAKERisn't as good as like using a real window manager

24:01SPEAKERwith a mouse and keyboard on a real computer.

24:04SPEAKERBut it's, I would describe it as pretty good

24:07SPEAKERfor like tablet type use.

24:10SPEAKERLike I was pretty pleased.

24:11SPEAKERWhen I figured out how to work it, I was pretty pleased.

24:13SPEAKERThey don't explain it at all.

24:14SPEAKERYou have to, like I had to go read something

24:16SPEAKERlike a Mac world article or something

24:21SPEAKERto figure out what the fuck was going on there.

24:23SPEAKER'Cause it was a little bit confusing.

24:26SPEAKER- That sounds like a level of window management flexibility

24:29SPEAKERthat is just approaching a traditional desktop OS.

24:31SPEAKERLike that seems like the lines have never been blurrier.

24:34SPEAKER- Yeah, it still has some weird limits.

24:36SPEAKERLike it doesn't, you don't have like full resolution control

24:39SPEAKERon the windows.

24:40SPEAKERIt still kind of snaps to like iPad-y or iOS-y,

24:44SPEAKERwhatever resolutions for the apps.

24:46SPEAKER- Okay.

24:47SPEAKER- But it's not like there's only four of them.

24:49SPEAKERThere's a whole bunch.

24:50SPEAKERLike you wouldn't notice if you are looking for that.

24:52SPEAKER- I think it was the part where you said

24:53SPEAKERyou can have windows on top of windows

24:55SPEAKERthat it was like, oh,

24:56SPEAKERthis kind of is just the traditional desktop metaphor now.

24:59SPEAKER- Well, and then the other thing that's nice

25:01SPEAKERis they actually let you turn that on and off.

25:02SPEAKERSo it's in the control center.

25:04SPEAKERThat stage manager feature is in the control center

25:06SPEAKERand you can turn it off if you want.

25:07SPEAKERYou can also turn off showing the dock when you're in that.

25:11SPEAKERSo like the dock gives you a good way

25:12SPEAKERto switch between different views

25:14SPEAKERand different applications that are open at any given time.

25:17SPEAKERBut it's pretty, like it's a pretty powerful thing

25:22SPEAKERfor the iPad.

25:23SPEAKERIt's worth mentioning, I haven't had a new iPad

25:25SPEAKERin a really long time.

25:26SPEAKERThe last iPad I bought was I think an iPad Air 2,

25:28SPEAKERwhich was in 2014 or 2015 probably.

25:31SPEAKER- Weird.

25:32SPEAKERRight around the time that you stopped having

25:33SPEAKERto professionally deal with iPads all the time.

25:35SPEAKER- It's what a weird coincidence.

25:37SPEAKERBut it turned out like I missed having,

25:40SPEAKERlike I read comics and I miss reading comics.

25:44SPEAKERI like iPad is an amazing device to read comics,

25:46SPEAKERespecially with like the all you can eat $30 a year

25:49SPEAKERsubscriptions to Marvel and DC and all that kind of stuff.

25:53SPEAKER- Yeah, I know I've said it before,

25:54SPEAKERbut the iPad for me is 99% just a consumption device.

25:58SPEAKERLike it's just a lighter thing without a keyboard.

26:01SPEAKERIt's just a lighter version of laptop

26:02SPEAKERwith no keyboard that I can just read Twitter

26:04SPEAKERand news on websites and like watch YouTube videos.

26:11SPEAKER- So I bought the 256 gig model.

26:14SPEAKERI bought the pencil and I bought the magic keyboard,

26:16SPEAKERwhich all in was like basically the same price

26:18SPEAKERas a good ass MacBook, like the cheap MacBook

26:22SPEAKERor the good MacBook Air or the cheap MacBook Pro.

26:24SPEAKER- That sounds great. - $1,300.

26:25SPEAKER- Yeah, I think that's about where the Air starts

26:28SPEAKERor something like that.

26:29SPEAKER- The Air starts at around a grand or 1100 bucks usually.

26:32SPEAKER- Oh wow, is it that cheap, wow.

26:34SPEAKER- But they do the normal thing that they do

26:36SPEAKER'cause so looking at it, 128 gig model is not enough, right?

26:41SPEAKERLike you need more space.

26:43SPEAKER'Cause I did wanna be able to like load some movies on it

26:45SPEAKERwhen I was on the airplane and stuff like that.

26:48SPEAKERSo it weighs about a pound without the keyboard.

26:51SPEAKERIt weighs more with the keyboard,

26:52SPEAKERbut when I have the keyboard on and I kind of don't care

26:54SPEAKER'cause it's sitting on something, right?

26:55SPEAKERI'm not carrying it, I'm not holding it.

26:58SPEAKERThe battery life is my normal use is that I use it

27:02SPEAKERfor 30 minutes or an hour before bed

27:04SPEAKERor like in the evening sitting on the couch.

27:06SPEAKERAnd I usually charge it at most twice a week,

27:09SPEAKERmaybe usually once a week.

27:11SPEAKER- Wow, that's pretty good.

27:12SPEAKER- It plugs into the PD fast charge port

27:15SPEAKERon my front of my computer.

27:16SPEAKERThat's where I charge it and it charges like an hour or two

27:19SPEAKERfrom nothing to full.

27:21SPEAKER- Do you trust the high speed PD charging?

27:25SPEAKERI've seen some FUD kind of floating around

27:27SPEAKERthat it's like maybe not great for battery longevity,

27:30SPEAKERspecifically for heat reasons, I don't know.

27:32SPEAKER- I feel like Apple's gotten to the point now

27:35SPEAKERwhere like they slow down,

27:37SPEAKERlike your AirPods slow down when you get to 80% now.

27:41SPEAKERSo I assume that they're doing what they can

27:44SPEAKERto maximize the charge cycles.

27:45SPEAKER- Yeah, this MacBook, this M1 MacBook Pro

27:48SPEAKERoccasionally like frequently, not all the time,

27:50SPEAKERbut frequently we'll stop charging at 80% and just sit.

27:53SPEAKER- Yeah, the AirPods just stopped charging at 80% often

27:56SPEAKER'cause they know that I'm gonna plug them back in.

27:58SPEAKER- Yeah, that's man, like just the charging logic

28:01SPEAKERthat they have gotten into lately

28:03SPEAKERis kind of a whole topic unto itself.

28:05SPEAKERLike the green charging window stuff

28:08SPEAKERthat I don't think we've really talked about

28:09SPEAKERsince they rolled it out, I assume you've seen that.

28:11SPEAKER- I haven't seen that.

28:12SPEAKER- But like the, it was a big hubbub

28:14SPEAKERbecause it was a whole bunch of people

28:15SPEAKERjust going like, you're not gonna take away

28:18SPEAKERmy charging freedom, like fuck you big brother Apple.

28:23SPEAKERThe idea is essentially the device,

28:24SPEAKERI don't know where it's pulling the data from,

28:26SPEAKERbut it's able to know when the power on the grid

28:29SPEAKERis being generated by green sources.

28:31SPEAKERAnd it'll essentially will only,

28:33SPEAKERit'll limit itself to only charging

28:34SPEAKERwhen it knows that it's pulling green energy

28:36SPEAKERor renewable energy.

28:38SPEAKERAnd of course a lot of people got mad about that, but.

28:41SPEAKER- Oh yeah, I have that turned on.

28:42SPEAKERI didn't know that, I hadn't seen that at all.

28:44SPEAKER- That was the big headline was,

28:45SPEAKERhey, they're shipping this iOS update with that enabled.

28:48SPEAKER- I mean, it makes sense.

28:49SPEAKERIt's like, I charged my car from midnight until 3 p.m.

28:52SPEAKERbecause it's cheaper for me.

28:53SPEAKERIt's like, there's a financial incentive to do that.

28:55SPEAKER- Yeah, actually, the Xbox did the same thing

28:58SPEAKERlike two months ago.

28:58SPEAKERThey also pulled out that feature

29:00SPEAKERthat causes it to only wake up and pull updates

29:03SPEAKERin those kinds of windows.

29:04SPEAKERAnd of course there's Ted Cruz right on cue going,

29:07SPEAKERthey're trying to take your Xbox from you.

29:09SPEAKER- I mean, it makes sense.

29:10SPEAKERIt makes like, I like spending less for electricity.

29:13SPEAKERIt turns out, who knew?

29:15SPEAKERAnyway, it does use a fair amount of battery

29:20SPEAKERwhen it's just idle.

29:21SPEAKERLike if I don't use it for a few days,

29:22SPEAKERI'll come back and it'll be down 15% or 10%, whatever.

29:25SPEAKERI don't know.

29:26SPEAKERI probably have stuff running in the background.

29:28SPEAKERIf I leave the fancy multitasking

29:31SPEAKERon the stage manager stuff on, it tends to eat more.

29:35SPEAKER- Even asleep?

29:37SPEAKER- It's hard to say, but I feel like that impacts battery life

29:43SPEAKER- The camera's real nice.

29:46SPEAKERIt has the fancy wide angle camera.

29:50SPEAKERSo when you're FaceTiming someone,

29:52SPEAKERyou can walk around in like 160 degree field of view

29:56SPEAKERin front of it and it'll just track you.

29:58SPEAKERSo I've set it up on the stand on the dining room table

30:01SPEAKERwhile we're eating breakfast

30:02SPEAKERand FaceTime my parents sometimes.

30:04SPEAKER- Okay.

30:05SPEAKER- It switches back and forth between my daughter and I

30:07SPEAKERare sitting next to each other talking.

30:08SPEAKER- Wow.

30:09SPEAKER- Yeah.

30:10SPEAKER- When you're talking?

30:11SPEAKER- Yeah.

30:12SPEAKER- That's capable of telling.

30:13SPEAKERI wonder if it's doing that on sound.

30:14SPEAKER- I think it's kind of like,

30:15SPEAKERwe're right on the edges of the thing.

30:17SPEAKERSo it picks up, I think it's picking up,

30:20SPEAKERI think it's picking up whose faces and marks.

30:22SPEAKERI usually lean in a little bit.

30:23SPEAKER- Oh, I see.

30:23SPEAKERIt's not a who's talking.

30:25SPEAKER- No, it doesn't.

30:26SPEAKERIf we're close enough,

30:27SPEAKERit does a really good job framing us both.

30:29SPEAKER- Okay.

30:30SPEAKER- If we're like right on the edges,

30:31SPEAKERit switches to whichever edge it thinks is most relevant.

30:34SPEAKER- I thought you meant it was actively tracking

30:36SPEAKERwho's talking and focusing them

30:37SPEAKERbecause that would be kind of next level.

30:39SPEAKERI don't know if they probably would do

30:40SPEAKERsome kind of facial tracking to-

30:42SPEAKER- I mean, yeah, they should be able to do that

30:43SPEAKER'cause they can try and see whether your lips are flapping.

30:45SPEAKER- Right.

30:47SPEAKER- The rear camera has the LIDAR scanner,

30:50SPEAKERwhich is really neat.

30:51SPEAKERYou can use it,

30:52SPEAKERlike I've used it with Scandi to scan rooms,

30:54SPEAKERwhich is like super fun.

30:56SPEAKERI did a couple of head scans,

30:58SPEAKERbut I don't have a model who will sit still enough

31:00SPEAKERto actually scan their head,

31:04SPEAKERbut it generates the big point cloud

31:06SPEAKERand then you can export that to become an FBX or whatever.

31:11SPEAKERSo the keyboard, the magic keyboard's interesting.

31:13SPEAKERLike I was, I literally,

31:16SPEAKERI talked to you about this before I bought it,

31:17SPEAKERbut I was like, I'm gonna buy this.

31:18SPEAKERI think I'm probably gonna send it back

31:19SPEAKERand buy a Logitech one after I use it for 12 days, right?

31:23SPEAKERIt's really good.

31:24SPEAKERLike it's super good.

31:29SPEAKERI don't want it stiff enough that you can set it on your,

31:31SPEAKERlike I can sit it on my lap when my legs crossed

31:33SPEAKERand type comfortably.

31:36SPEAKERThe key action feels nice.

31:38SPEAKERIt's got a good travel on the keys.

31:40SPEAKERThey're a little bit big and chiclety,

31:43SPEAKERbut like they generally feels pretty good.

31:45SPEAKERAnd it's got this, the hinge on it is this,

31:48SPEAKERlike it like folds out halfway up the thing.

31:52SPEAKER- Oh, wow.

31:53SPEAKER- So you get the right angle when it's sitting on your lap

31:56SPEAKERor when it's sitting on a table or whatever.

31:57SPEAKERIt's most comfortable sitting on a table.

31:59SPEAKERIf you're sitting on your lap, it's fine.

32:01SPEAKERI used it on the airplane a few weeks ago.

32:02SPEAKERIt was no problem,

32:04SPEAKERwhich is unusual for me 'cause I'm pretty wide.

32:06SPEAKERLike I have wide shoulders.

32:08SPEAKERSo being able to use a laptop on the airplane

32:10SPEAKERis not always the case.

32:14SPEAKERAnd I was able to watch,

32:15SPEAKERlike it also is a really lovely stand

32:17SPEAKERfor if you want to watch a movie or something

32:19SPEAKERand just don't want to have to hold the iPad

32:20SPEAKERwhile you're doing that.

32:21SPEAKER- I don't know if we can, maybe people can Google photos.

32:23SPEAKERI don't know if we can explain exactly

32:25SPEAKERwhat is going on there verbally, but I was going to ask.

32:28SPEAKERSo it's kind of a stand that extends up from the keyboard

32:32SPEAKERand sort of elevates the iPad where it's,

32:34SPEAKERthe base of the iPad is not connected

32:36SPEAKERto the keyboard anymore.

32:37SPEAKER- Yeah, so it has a hinge on one side.

32:40SPEAKERThe iPad magnets onto that back piece.

32:42SPEAKERLike it just snaps on like the MagSafe connector.

32:45SPEAKERAnd you, about a third of the way up the back of the iPad,

32:51SPEAKERthere's another hinge that folds out.

32:53SPEAKERAnd basically the back hinge points straight up

32:57SPEAKERand then that hinge pivots back a little bit.

32:59SPEAKERSo you get like a nice,

33:00SPEAKERyou get the right angle basically for it.

33:02SPEAKERBut then the iPad overlaps the top of the keyboard

33:04SPEAKERjust a little bit, the bottom of it does.

33:06SPEAKER- It's kind of like the iPad is sort of floating

33:08SPEAKERabove the keyboard.

33:09SPEAKERIs there any sort of tension in that hinge

33:11SPEAKERwhere you can adjust the angle or is that angle fixed?

33:13SPEAKER- You can adjust it a little bit.

33:15SPEAKERIt's not like you can't adjust the,

33:18SPEAKERthe main hinge you can't adjust too much.

33:21SPEAKERThe one that tilts up and down, you can adjust a little bit.

33:24SPEAKERAnd then there's a USB-C on that hinge as well

33:28SPEAKERthat you can plug into.

33:29SPEAKERSo if you want to use it like a weird janky dock,

33:32SPEAKERyou totally can and just leave your power plugged into that

33:34SPEAKERwhen you're sitting at your desk or whatever.

33:35SPEAKER- Is that separate from the USB-C on the iPad itself?

33:38SPEAKERThere are two now essentially?

33:39SPEAKER- Then you have two USB-Cs is my understanding.

33:41SPEAKERI haven't actually tried that.

33:42SPEAKER- Okay, that's cool.

33:44SPEAKER- The weird thing, we can talk about USB-C in a minute

33:48SPEAKER'cause it's a little bit screwy.

33:54SPEAKERThe weird thing about using iOS with a physical keyboard,

33:57SPEAKERwhich I haven't done in a really long time,

33:59SPEAKERis that it turns out there's a lot of stuff

34:02SPEAKERthat lives between the onscreen keyboard

34:05SPEAKERand the content window on phones and iPads these days.

34:09SPEAKERLike your password manager stuff

34:10SPEAKERall shows up in that gap when you're in a password field.

34:14SPEAKERThat lives in a little pop-up.

34:17SPEAKERLike there's a keyboard pop-up.

34:18SPEAKERAnd if you're not in stage manager, it works great.

34:22SPEAKER'Cause it just gives you like a little bar

34:24SPEAKERthat kind of floats toward the bottom of the screen

34:27SPEAKERthat has like whatever the context sensitive stuff is.

34:30SPEAKERWhether it's the type of head prediction

34:32SPEAKERor the autocorrect, like the three autocorrect words

34:36SPEAKERit often gives you or the password manager prompts.

34:39SPEAKERThat stuff is a little bit there.

34:40SPEAKERIf you're in stage manager, you don't get password prompts.

34:43SPEAKERSo you have to actually open up your password manager window

34:45SPEAKERand copy and paste from there.

34:46SPEAKERAnd it kind of sucks.

34:47SPEAKERLike it's not a great solution for that.

34:49SPEAKER- Seems like an odd limitation, but.

34:52SPEAKER- Honestly, it seems like the kind of thing

34:53SPEAKERthat somebody just didn't, hasn't thought of yet.

34:55SPEAKERYeah, it still has that pop-up there.

34:58SPEAKERStill has the little floaty thing, but when you hit it,

35:00SPEAKERit pops up the full screen keyboard instead of just the,

35:03SPEAKERjust the partial.

35:05SPEAKERThey don't give you control over the keyboard backlight,

35:07SPEAKERwhich I don't get.

35:08SPEAKER- Huh, I'm not so sure about that.

35:11SPEAKER- It turns out it's fine.

35:12SPEAKER'Cause it's a pretty, so you can, when it's on,

35:15SPEAKERyou can dim and brighten it, but when it's not on,

35:18SPEAKERyou can't turn it on and off manually.

35:19SPEAKERIt only turns on and off when it's based

35:21SPEAKERon the darkness of the room.

35:22SPEAKER- That may be the case on the MacBook Pros now, actually.

35:25SPEAKERThey definitely took away the physical keys

35:28SPEAKERfor adjusting the brightness of the keyboard backlight.

35:30SPEAKERYou have to do it through system settings.

35:31SPEAKER- You can't do a function key anymore?

35:33SPEAKER- No.

35:34SPEAKER- You used to move like function F3 and F4, five, six.

35:36SPEAKER- No, those are not now part of the top row.

35:39SPEAKER- Oh, and they took away the touch bar,

35:41SPEAKERwhich is where that stuff lived before that, right?

35:43SPEAKER- Yes, although frankly, fine with me.

35:45SPEAKERDon't miss the touch bar.

35:47SPEAKER- I never had a touch bar MacBook.

35:49SPEAKERI feel like I missed out.

35:50SPEAKER- For a hot minute, for about the first year of the pandemic,

35:54SPEAKERI had a work laptop that had the touch bar.

35:57SPEAKERI can't remember, mine might've had

35:59SPEAKERat least the physical escape key.

36:01SPEAKERI can't remember.

36:01SPEAKER- You said you had the physical escape key.

36:03SPEAKER- I think that's right.

36:04SPEAKERI did not enjoy that touch bar though.

36:07SPEAKER- So the place the keyboard breaks down for me

36:09SPEAKERis the track pad is, it's inconsistent.

36:14SPEAKERAnd I think it's based on the app,

36:16SPEAKERthe choices the app developers make,

36:18SPEAKERnot necessarily the hardware.

36:19SPEAKERLike the hardware is fine, it works.

36:21SPEAKERLike you get, it responds just like you would expect

36:23SPEAKERfrom a glass track pad on your MacBook.

36:25SPEAKER- Does it feel essentially like

36:26SPEAKERthat kind of standard magic?

36:28SPEAKER- It's fast and cool when you click it.

36:30SPEAKERAnd I think it actually is a physical clicker.

36:32SPEAKERIt doesn't have the taptic stuff underneath it,

36:33SPEAKERbut other than that, it feels good.

36:37SPEAKERYou can do multi-touch with it.

36:38SPEAKERIt's inconsistent in apps, how it works.

36:41SPEAKERSo for example, if you try to click and drag

36:46SPEAKERto select text in Google docs,

36:49SPEAKERwhich doesn't support, which,

36:51SPEAKERso if you try to click and select text

36:53SPEAKERand say notes, Apple notes, works fine.

36:55SPEAKERIf you click and try to select text in Google docs,

36:59SPEAKERit treats it like a single finger press,

37:02SPEAKERwhich in Google docs does not do a tap, a select.

37:05SPEAKERIt like grabs whatever the word that it's under

37:07SPEAKERand moves it.

37:10SPEAKERThe multi-touch stuff is supported kind of inconsistently

37:13SPEAKERin the app.

37:13SPEAKERSometimes it, generally,

37:15SPEAKERif it doesn't work the way you expect it to,

37:16SPEAKERit's because it thinks you're doing multi-tap on the screen.

37:20SPEAKERSo you have to like, in your head,

37:23SPEAKERknow that Google docs is a multi-tap,

37:25SPEAKERis a screen app,

37:27SPEAKERand Apple stuff is all, you know,

37:31SPEAKERknows that it's a touch pad and treats it accordingly.

37:35SPEAKERI often just touch the screen instead of the track pad.

37:38SPEAKERAnd because of the way the camber on the screen works,

37:41SPEAKERit's fine.

37:43SPEAKERLike, I think that,

37:45SPEAKERso having used it for a while,

37:47SPEAKERI think if this keyboard didn't have the track pad,

37:51SPEAKERit would be fine.

37:52SPEAKERI would actually be fine with it.

37:54SPEAKERI would pay a hundred bucks less and not have

37:55SPEAKERthe track pad happily.

37:56SPEAKER- Interesting.

37:57SPEAKER- It still needs that space on there so that there's,

38:00SPEAKERso it balances the cantilever on the screen, on the iPad.

38:06SPEAKERAnd also, I don't think realistically,

38:08SPEAKERthat they can sell an expensive-ass keyboard attachment

38:11SPEAKERfor this thing that doesn't have a track pad on it

38:13SPEAKERwithout people getting pissed off.

38:14SPEAKER- Do you think that inconsistency with the kind of use

38:17SPEAKERof the track pad and stuff,

38:18SPEAKERdo you think is that's like,

38:20SPEAKERsome company is just not giving this the proper UX attention

38:23SPEAKERbecause this is still kind of an emerging market segment

38:25SPEAKERor style of workflow?

38:26SPEAKEROr do you think it's more like people,

38:28SPEAKERlike companies like Google are paying attention,

38:31SPEAKERthey just have different ideas

38:32SPEAKERabout how this type of thing should work?

38:36SPEAKER- It almost feels to me like it's the third option,

38:38SPEAKERwhich is that like there's multiple APIs

38:41SPEAKERfor interfacing with touch.

38:42SPEAKERAnd then some people are using old ones

38:44SPEAKERand some people are using new ones.

38:46SPEAKER- That's the worst.

38:47SPEAKEREspecially like, I know that feeling well,

38:48SPEAKERif you use like a lot of, for example,

38:50SPEAKERlike GUI application, open source GUI stuff,

38:53SPEAKERand Windows, you're running into like 800 different

38:56SPEAKERwindow drawing libraries and stuff like that.

39:00SPEAKER- Love an ancient GTK, that's my favorite.

39:02SPEAKER- Right, it's like, oh, copy paste doesn't work

39:04SPEAKERin this the way you would expect it to.

39:06SPEAKER- Yeah, it is a little bit weird.

39:10SPEAKERFirefox is generally okay,

39:12SPEAKERbut sometimes it just gets stuck in finger mode

39:14SPEAKERand I don't know why that happens.

39:16SPEAKERSo this is essentially this second generation

39:22SPEAKERthat they've given you a real track pad,

39:24SPEAKERI think on the magic keyboard.

39:26SPEAKERSo it could just be that it's like,

39:28SPEAKERI think this is the stuff that the Mac people

39:30SPEAKERare complaining about, frankly.

39:31SPEAKER- Real quick before we move on from the keyboard,

39:33SPEAKERI know you said it sits just fine in your lap.

39:35SPEAKERI'm kind of curious how that works.

39:37SPEAKERLike, is it just a nice broad, flat surface on the bottom?

39:40SPEAKERLike I find even with my 14 inch,

39:42SPEAKERokay, you're holding it up right now.

39:45SPEAKEREven with my 14 inch MacBook Pro,

39:47SPEAKERI still like having a lap desk under it.

39:49SPEAKER'Cause it's just maybe I spread too much.

39:52SPEAKER- You might sprawl.

39:54SPEAKER- It doesn't sit on my lap super well

39:56SPEAKERwith the width of the thing.

39:58SPEAKERI kind of need a broader surface underneath it.

40:00SPEAKER- I had it kind of candid on one leg

40:03SPEAKERwith like the quarter balanced on my cross leg last night.

40:06SPEAKERAnd it's fine.

40:07SPEAKER- Okay, interesting.

40:08SPEAKER- So my lap for this is usually a recliner or a sofa.

40:13SPEAKERSo like I'll sit on the sofa with my legs propped up.

40:15SPEAKERAnd then my legs are maybe a little more stable.

40:18SPEAKERMy legs are definitely not leaning down.

40:20SPEAKER- Okay.

40:21SPEAKER- My legs are level or tilted up.

40:22SPEAKER- Sure, okay, yeah, kind of leaning down,

40:24SPEAKERlike on a couch is exactly where I'm at.

40:26SPEAKER- Yeah, like if I was sitting on the couch,

40:29SPEAKERI probably wouldn't, it's probably not as good.

40:31SPEAKERI didn't use it at the airport gate

40:34SPEAKERsitting in the waiting for the plane though.

40:35SPEAKERSo, and that was fine.

40:40SPEAKERYou wanna talk about the pencil?

40:41SPEAKER- Yeah, I think the, just I'm laughing

40:44SPEAKERat the first line of these notes under pencil.

40:48SPEAKERBut my handwriting isn't good enough

40:49SPEAKERto take notes with the pencil.

40:50SPEAKER- Yes.

40:51SPEAKER- It's harsh, but fair.

40:52SPEAKER- I would probably be in the same place.

40:55SPEAKER- Look, I never once got complimented

40:59SPEAKERon my handwriting my entire life.

41:01SPEAKERNobody's ever been like, man, you did,

41:02SPEAKERhey, that is completely legible

41:05SPEAKERand something that a normal human would create as, yeah.

41:08SPEAKER- It's just 'cause you've got so much to say,

41:10SPEAKERyou don't have time to make it pretty.

41:12SPEAKERI'm reaching here.

41:13SPEAKER- Look, my mom used to think

41:16SPEAKERthat I thought I should go to medical school

41:19SPEAKERbecause the guidance counselor was like,

41:21SPEAKERyour handwriting's so bad.

41:22SPEAKERThe only thing you can do is be a doctor.

41:24SPEAKER- That is a prerequisite, yes.

41:25SPEAKER- Yeah, so I haven't tried good notes.

41:29SPEAKERSo, okay, so for writing,

41:34SPEAKERI gave up on handwriting with the pencil almost immediately.

41:37SPEAKERIt's not, that's not, it's not gonna work for me.

41:39SPEAKERIt's not gonna be my jam.

41:41SPEAKERIt will do handwriting recognition,

41:43SPEAKERincluding like cursive and the weird,

41:45SPEAKERlike part cursive, part block text that we all use now.

41:48SPEAKER- Sure.

41:50SPEAKER- And I was shocked at how well it did

41:52SPEAKEReven with my bad handwriting for that.

41:54SPEAKERStill way, way, way, way, way faster to type,

41:58SPEAKERat least for me.

41:59SPEAKER- Like literally any amount of inaccuracy

42:01SPEAKERis probably too much.

42:02SPEAKERLike if you're having to correct any errors,

42:05SPEAKERit's probably too slow to be better than typing.

42:08SPEAKER- And I can type 120 words a minute

42:10SPEAKERand I can write it about 30.

42:12SPEAKER- Sure, the other thing is that the dictation

42:17SPEAKERis ridiculously good.

42:18SPEAKERI don't know if you've used that lately,

42:19SPEAKERbut on the devices with the neural chip,

42:23SPEAKERit is like, it is offensive how reliable it is.

42:28SPEAKERIt even gets like weird lingo words

42:30SPEAKERand like brands and stuff like that,

42:31SPEAKERthat normally it would choke on.

42:33SPEAKER- Okay.

42:35SPEAKER- It didn't get geet 'cause I think it is probably too new

42:38SPEAKERfor it to understand what a yeeting is.

42:40SPEAKER- Good getting Merriam-Webster on the phone,

42:42SPEAKERthat's gotta go in any year now.

42:44SPEAKER- Yeah, exactly.

42:45SPEAKER- Or Oxford.

42:46SPEAKER- But so I guess my point is I would,

42:49SPEAKERif I was in a situation where handwriting,

42:51SPEAKERwhere typing isn't available,

42:52SPEAKERand I had a lot of stuff that I had to get in quickly,

42:54SPEAKERI would probably just talk it to it at this point

42:56SPEAKERrather than try to hand write or screen type.

42:59SPEAKER- Sure, unless you're at the airport gate and then.

43:02SPEAKER- No, then I'm yelling at him, like fuck you Siri,

43:04SPEAKERgive me the, ah.

43:05SPEAKERAnyway, sorry for the yelling and the cursing, children.

43:09SPEAKER- The pencil, like the lift detection

43:12SPEAKERand the pickup detection and all that,

43:14SPEAKERit detects really far from the screen.

43:15SPEAKERIt's like a half an inch from the screen probably.

43:20SPEAKER- To take actual input, like you kind of write

43:22SPEAKERwithout contacting the screen

43:23SPEAKERor is it more just moving a cursor at that distance?

43:26SPEAKER- Well, so it gives you, it lets you,

43:28SPEAKERit gives you really, it's how the precise control

43:30SPEAKERover the cursor works with the separation

43:33SPEAKERfrom the screen and the digitizer.

43:38SPEAKERSo, you know, like the parallax between the top of the screen

43:41SPEAKERand the screen under the glass and the top of the glass

43:45SPEAKERis one of the things that makes it hard to know

43:47SPEAKERprecisely where your line is gonna go

43:49SPEAKERwhen you're drawing and stuff like that.

43:51SPEAKERAnd because it shows you exactly where that's gonna be

43:54SPEAKERas you're approaching, your brain just makes it work.

43:57SPEAKERLike your brain fixes whatever parallax

44:00SPEAKERand adjusts for it immediately.

44:01SPEAKERIt is super duper good.

44:03SPEAKER- That's cool.

44:04SPEAKERWow, it's the little things that you don't think about.

44:08SPEAKER- It is literally a thing that I never

44:10SPEAKERwould have considered, but it completely solves the problem

44:14SPEAKERwith every not powered stylus I've used in the past.

44:19SPEAKER- Can I ask real quick, since we're talking about

44:22SPEAKERtouching the pencil to the iPad right now,

44:24SPEAKERwhat is the tip of the pencil made out of

44:26SPEAKERand how does that feel?

44:27SPEAKERLike just the thought of, I'm sure it's some space age

44:29SPEAKERfrictionless material or something,

44:31SPEAKERbut the thought of dragging a pointing device

44:34SPEAKERaround or across a piece of glass all the time

44:37SPEAKERjust kind of makes me cringe.

44:38SPEAKER- So it's like a hard plasticy stuff.

44:41SPEAKERIt's not like hard, hard, it's not like Delrin hard.

44:44SPEAKERIt's not like a really hard plastic,

44:45SPEAKERbut it's definitely a firmer plastic.

44:48SPEAKERIt feels okay just on the glass.

44:51SPEAKERIt tends to leave, so it's not leaving marks,

44:55SPEAKERbut what it is doing is highlighting the finger grease

44:57SPEAKERthat's on your screens all the time

44:59SPEAKER'cause it makes stripes through the finger grease

45:01SPEAKERwhen you're sketching.

45:02SPEAKER- Good.

45:03SPEAKER- I solved this problem by spending $10 on a paper surface

45:07SPEAKERscreen protector that makes it feel like just writing

45:12SPEAKERon paper.

45:13SPEAKER- Oh, wow, what does that do to the look of the screen?

45:17SPEAKERI mean, or is that?

45:18SPEAKER- It's a little more matte.

45:19SPEAKER- Giving it, yeah.

45:20SPEAKER- Yeah, and like you can hear,

45:23SPEAKERis that coming, I don't think that's coming through.

45:25SPEAKER- I hear it, I don't know if it'll,

45:26SPEAKERhopefully it'll be on the record.

45:27SPEAKERYeah, that kind of sounds like paper.

45:29SPEAKER- It sounds like, more importantly, it feels like paper.

45:32SPEAKERSo it gives you the kind of drag that you get

45:34SPEAKERwhen you're sketching on paper.

45:36SPEAKERAnd it doesn't feel slidey like the glass on the nub did.

45:42SPEAKERFor me, I've been okay.

45:44SPEAKERLike the the matte-ness of the surface is okay with me.

45:50SPEAKERLike it's not, it's weird, but not terrible.

45:55SPEAKER- That's cool.

45:56SPEAKERI mean, that's another one of those they thought

45:59SPEAKERof everything kind of things of like,

46:00SPEAKERjust like with the cursor tracking

46:03SPEAKERbetween the glass and the LCD.

46:06SPEAKEROr is it OLED now?

46:07SPEAKER- I think so, yeah.

46:09SPEAKER- Stuff like that, just the little details like that though.

46:11SPEAKERIt's like, I never would have thought of that stuff,

46:12SPEAKERbut they did.

46:13SPEAKER- Well, to be clear, the screen protector

46:15SPEAKERwas a third-party thing, I think.

46:15SPEAKER- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, but still,

46:16SPEAKERjust the fact that that's even available is cool.

46:20SPEAKER- The bummer of the screen protector

46:22SPEAKERis that I feel like the paper,

46:23SPEAKERit protects from scratches pretty well,

46:25SPEAKERbut it is pretty thin and papery.

46:27SPEAKERLike, I don't think it would actually absorb

46:29SPEAKERa drop impact or whatever.

46:31SPEAKERSo, you know, still have to be careful.

46:33SPEAKERThe iPad glass is thick enough that I'm less worried

46:35SPEAKERabout cracking an iPad screen than I am, say,

46:36SPEAKERa phone or a watch or something like that.

46:38SPEAKER- Sure.

46:40SPEAKER- Tapping the side of the pencil, like,

46:42SPEAKERlets you change modes.

46:43SPEAKERSo like in Procreate, I have it set to change

46:47SPEAKERbetween whatever brush I'm currently using and the eraser.

46:52SPEAKERIt charges, you kind of magnet it onto the side of the iPad,

46:56SPEAKERand it just holds there and charges

46:58SPEAKERin about like 10 minutes, I think,

47:00SPEAKER15 minutes to get from zero to 100.

47:02SPEAKER- That's not so bad.

47:03SPEAKER- In like a minute, you have like 20 minutes of use

47:05SPEAKERor something like that.

47:06SPEAKER- Oh, great, okay, I was gonna ask if Better Life

47:07SPEAKERhad ever been an issue, but if you can use it

47:10SPEAKERwith a moment, like one minute's notice,

47:11SPEAKERregardless, that's fine.

47:13SPEAKER- Yeah, like often my daughter will say,

47:14SPEAKER"Hey, can I use your iPad and draw?"

47:16SPEAKERAnd I'll say, "Yeah," and then I realize the pencil's dead,

47:18SPEAKERand I'll say, "Well, give me five minutes,"

47:19SPEAKERand then she's good for the entire session.

47:21SPEAKER- Sure, you're talking about touching on it.

47:23SPEAKERDoes it have any physical buttons,

47:24SPEAKERor is that all sort of capacitive,

47:26SPEAKERjust like passive seamless touch?

47:28SPEAKER- It's completely sealed, except you can replace the tips,

47:33SPEAKERobviously, 'cause they wear down over time.

47:35SPEAKERSo there's no buttons, there's nothing on it.

47:37SPEAKERThere's a motion accelerometer in it that does the tapping,

47:40SPEAKERso you just kinda like, it's like idly tapping

47:43SPEAKERon the side of a pencil with two fingers.

47:45SPEAKERYou just boom, boom, and it switches back and forth.

47:48SPEAKERI think there's some accessibility options

47:50SPEAKERto let you do more things with that

47:52SPEAKERif you wanna do like a triple tap,

47:53SPEAKERbut two taps, it turns out, is enough for me.

47:57SPEAKERThe pressure sensitivity's really good.

47:59SPEAKERI'm obviously not an artist,

48:01SPEAKERbut I have used Cintiqs and stuff like that in the past,

48:03SPEAKERand it feels comparable to that.

48:05SPEAKERThe limitation on the 11-inch iPad

48:07SPEAKERis mainly screen size, I think,

48:08SPEAKER'cause 11 inches, it's basically like

48:11SPEAKERan eight and a half by 11 piece of paper.

48:14SPEAKERIt's a little small.

48:20SPEAKERIt's not small, the actual writing space isn't small,

48:23SPEAKERbut I want there to be more flush area

48:26SPEAKERoff the side of the screen that I can rest my hand on

48:28SPEAKERwhile I'm working on the edges of the paper.

48:31SPEAKERThat's kind of countered by being able to zoom in and out.

48:40SPEAKERAnd the pressure sensitivity is a little variable

48:43SPEAKERbased on the app you're using,

48:44SPEAKERlike some apps handle it differently.

48:46SPEAKERI tend to use Procreate and Adobe Fresco to draw mostly,

48:50SPEAKERboth of which are quite good.

48:54SPEAKERThere's a couple painting apps that I've messed around with.

48:57SPEAKERI tried GoodNotes a little bit,

48:59SPEAKERbut it doesn't have an export to Windows,

49:01SPEAKERso it wasn't really a viable note-taking solution for me.

49:07SPEAKERThere's no Windows version,

49:08SPEAKERso I can't access my notes easily

49:10SPEAKERin that I'm taking the iPad and Windows.

49:14SPEAKERI tried a ton of note-taking apps that are cross platform.

49:17SPEAKERI think we should do a whole episode on those at some point,

49:19SPEAKERbecause it's a neat space, and it's really complicated,

49:23SPEAKERand nothing is perfect.

49:26SPEAKERWe ended up using, I think I ended up using Notion,

49:29SPEAKERbut that's mostly because we're gonna use it at work,

49:31SPEAKERnot because of, I like Notion a lot.

49:35SPEAKERIt does not integrate particularly well

49:37SPEAKERwith the ability to draw on the iPad.

49:39SPEAKER- Yeah, we should do that once I get past this PC build

49:41SPEAKERand have a new workstation in here.

49:43SPEAKERI'm probably also gonna look for something along those lines.

49:46SPEAKER- Yeah, it turns out having a dedicated place

49:48SPEAKERthat's on your phone,

49:49SPEAKERhaving a bucket into which to put notes

49:51SPEAKERthat lives on your phone and your laptop

49:53SPEAKERand your computer is handy, it turns out.

49:56SPEAKER- Something that is just seamlessly across

49:57SPEAKEReverything I have and you can just refer to it

49:59SPEAKERwithout thinking, it seems extremely handy.

50:02SPEAKER- Yeah, and so we talked about multitasking already.

50:06SPEAKERI think nothing else to do there.

50:09SPEAKERThe other stuff I do is I read comics.

50:11SPEAKERI signed up for Marvel Unlimited when it was on sale

50:13SPEAKERat Christmas or Black Friday or something,

50:15SPEAKERand I've been reading 30 years of Marvel stuff

50:19SPEAKERthat I never looked at before.

50:21SPEAKERIt's friggin' awesome.

50:22SPEAKERLike, it's such a good way to read comics.

50:24SPEAKER- Forgive me, did you mention what size screen you got?

50:27SPEAKER- I got the 11 inch.

50:29SPEAKER- Oh, the smaller one.

50:30SPEAKER- The smaller one, yeah.

50:32SPEAKERI didn't, I was more, like, my thought process on that,

50:38SPEAKERI went to the store and actually held both of them

50:39SPEAKERbefore I made the choice.

50:41SPEAKERMy thought process on that is that the big one

50:43SPEAKERis too heavy, is heavier than I wanna hold comfortably,

50:46SPEAKERand this is a 90% using at home, 10% using out and about,

50:52SPEAKERand I wanted it to be best for that home

50:56SPEAKEReven though the 12.9 inch screen would maybe be better

50:59SPEAKERfor drawing and when I was out.

51:01SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't think I've held one of the 30 inch pros,

51:05SPEAKERbut just even seeing them in person, like,

51:07SPEAKERit seems like the extra real estate would be great

51:09SPEAKERwhen you need it, but kind of cumbersome when you don't.

51:11SPEAKER- It really seems like, hey,

51:14SPEAKERI wanna be able to draw on this thing,

51:16SPEAKERand everything else is secondary to that.

51:19SPEAKER- Like, you probably are using that professionally 99%

51:22SPEAKERof the time to need that space, right?

51:24SPEAKER- I would kind of assume so, yeah.

51:26SPEAKERI think it also has a better aspect ratio for film,

51:28SPEAKERbut I'm not sure about that.

51:29SPEAKER- Yes, yeah, I'll mention right now,

51:30SPEAKERI was gonna, we touched on this earlier

51:31SPEAKERwith potential sort of film industry applications.

51:34SPEAKERIf anybody uses tablets like this in kind of what I consider

51:38SPEAKERlike very hardcore creative fields like film production

51:43SPEAKERor fine art or you name it, architecture, I don't know.

51:46SPEAKERLike, I would love to hear if people who are listening

51:49SPEAKERwho work in those kinds of disciplines

51:51SPEAKERare moving to this style of hybrid

51:53SPEAKERkind of tablet detachable sort of thing.

51:56SPEAKER- The thing I've, my understanding is that people do use

51:58SPEAKERthese for cataloging, like when you're on a shoot

52:00SPEAKERand you have cards coming in with your footage on it,

52:03SPEAKERthis is one of the ways that people use to catalog,

52:07SPEAKERcatalog footage and index it and get it on the backups

52:11SPEAKERand all that before they cycle the cards

52:12SPEAKERback out to the shoot.

52:15SPEAKER- Sure.

52:16SPEAKER- And that's more on like not, that's not film scale,

52:19SPEAKERthat's, or even like prestige TV,

52:22SPEAKERthat's like really high-end YouTube

52:24SPEAKERor low-end like reality TV stuff is my understanding.

52:28SPEAKER- I even wonder like, are there applications

52:30SPEAKERfor like say mounting one of these two-way camera?

52:33SPEAKERLike can it, I'm curious about any sort of like

52:36SPEAKERslightly more esoteric or DIY uses of these things.

52:39SPEAKER- Well, so that's one of the things I didn't do is you,

52:41SPEAKERlike the USB-C port on this is actually a Thunderbolt 3

52:45SPEAKERor 4 port, like it's a USB 4 Thunderbolt 3, I think.

52:48SPEAKER- Okay.

52:49SPEAKER- So you can connect like a dock to it.

52:51SPEAKERYou can connect a monitor to it and it'll work.

52:53SPEAKERIt'll, it's a full ass,

52:55SPEAKERyou can put a full ass second screen on this thing.

52:57SPEAKER- Right.

52:59SPEAKER- I haven't tried that 'cause I don't have a monitor

53:01SPEAKERthat would work with,

53:03SPEAKERI don't think I have a Thunderbolt monitor that's,

53:05SPEAKERlike my Thunderbolt monitor is a Thunderbolt 1 monitor.

53:07SPEAKERI don't think it works with that anymore.

53:10SPEAKEROr I'd have to get some screwy like USB-C

53:13SPEAKERto display port cable, I think, in order for it to work.

53:15SPEAKERBut it's, like it's got weird,

53:21SPEAKERyou can do weird stuff with this thing that I,

53:23SPEAKERlike you can plug it into a Thunderbolt dock

53:25SPEAKERthat then plugs into a, like a giant RAID array

53:29SPEAKERfor the aforementioned footage cataloging, stuff like that.

53:33SPEAKERAnd it's not like you're dealing with a phone,

53:36SPEAKERlightning USB 3, like slow USB 3, not fast USB 3.1.

53:43SPEAKERData throughput for like transferring stuff on and off.

53:45SPEAKERIt's fast.

53:47SPEAKERI could theoretically plug my audio interface into this

53:50SPEAKERand record a podcast with it in GarageBand.

53:52SPEAKERThat's like literally the last thing in these notes here.

53:54SPEAKERThings I haven't done, recorded a podcast.

53:57SPEAKER- Yeah, it kind of scares me

53:59SPEAKER'cause I don't know that iOS will let me,

54:02SPEAKERI would have to use a different,

54:04SPEAKERI wouldn't be able to monitor

54:05SPEAKER'cause I'd have to use a different pair of headphones

54:06SPEAKERto talk to you on the Zoom call

54:08SPEAKERthat I was using to talk on the podcast.

54:14SPEAKERSo I like being able to monitor myself.

54:16SPEAKER- Yes, absolutely.

54:17SPEAKERI'm also sitting here trying to think like,

54:18SPEAKERwhat kind of redundancy could you set up there?

54:21SPEAKER- Not much.

54:22SPEAKER- Yeah, like I'm sure you're the same.

54:25SPEAKERLike I wouldn't want to attempt that

54:26SPEAKERunless there was also some kind of backup recording running.

54:28SPEAKERAnd I'm not sure how you could do that

54:30SPEAKER'cause at the end of the day, it is still an iPad

54:32SPEAKERand it's not probably not gonna let you

54:33SPEAKERrun two separate applications and record on both.

54:36SPEAKER- The way my audio chain is set up,

54:39SPEAKERI could hook the audio interface that I use on my desktop PC,

54:43SPEAKERmy main desktop PC, which is a Motu M4.

54:46SPEAKERI could plug that into the USB-C port

54:48SPEAKERand then pipe the microphone out from that

54:50SPEAKERinto the big mixer on my streaming PC

54:53SPEAKERand then record on the streaming PC.

54:55SPEAKERIt would be a fair amount of work

54:57SPEAKERand I don't know that I care that much.

54:58SPEAKER- That's kind of the bigger thing

55:00SPEAKERis like all your other recording gear

55:02SPEAKERis already routed to a desk anyway.

55:03SPEAKERYou might as well use the big machine

55:05SPEAKERthat's also sitting at the desk.

55:06SPEAKER- Yeah.

55:07SPEAKER- If there's not much benefit to doing it on an iPad, I guess.

55:10SPEAKER- I mean, the benefit is I'm traveling next week.

55:12SPEAKER- Oh yeah, yeah, if you're out of town, that's different.

55:14SPEAKER- I could have taken a headset and my audio interface

55:17SPEAKERand theoretically, the thing I haven't tried,

55:19SPEAKERand I should have done this beforehand, I apologize,

55:21SPEAKERis I haven't tried doing like a Zoom call on the iPad

55:25SPEAKERand having GarageBand running at the same time recording.

55:27SPEAKER- Interesting, yeah.

55:29SPEAKER- 'Cause theoretically, stage managers should let me do that

55:31SPEAKERbut I have not tried it yet.

55:36SPEAKERBut I do, almost all the show notes that I've written

55:39SPEAKERsince I've gotten this have been written on this

55:41SPEAKER'cause it's nice to sit in the living room

55:43SPEAKERand not do this in the office

55:44SPEAKERthat I spend 10 or 15 hours a day in.

55:46SPEAKER- Sure.

55:47SPEAKER- I've run a bunch of presentations on it.

55:50SPEAKERI play games pretty much every day.

55:54SPEAKERBecause we have Apple TV and Apple Music,

55:58SPEAKERand data from them, we also get Apple Arcade

56:01SPEAKERfor free, basically, and I play a bunch of Apple Arcade.

56:04SPEAKERIt turns out Apple Arcade is a pretty good solution

56:07SPEAKERfor playing games on your iOS device

56:10SPEAKERwithout having to deal with a bunch of free-to-play nonsense.

56:12SPEAKER- Sure, sure.

56:14SPEAKER- And that's it.

56:15SPEAKER- Yeah, sounds like a successful experiment so far.

56:20SPEAKER- I think a laptop would be more,

56:23SPEAKERit's definitely not as capable as a laptop.

56:26SPEAKERLike that is, even in M2, even looking at what's possible,

56:31SPEAKERespecially now that all of the apps that I use,

56:34SPEAKERso there are M2 versions for Mac OS,

56:39SPEAKERundoubtedly, I would have had a more capable device

56:41SPEAKERif I bought the MacBook.

56:43SPEAKERHowever, I wouldn't be able to draw on it,

56:45SPEAKERwhich there's something, it's really lovely,

56:48SPEAKERand my drawing has gotten,

56:50SPEAKEReven my basic pencil sketching has gotten so much better

56:53SPEAKERsince I got Procreate and I started doing reference layers.

56:57SPEAKERSo I'll take an image of something

56:58SPEAKERthat I want to learn how to draw,

57:00SPEAKERand I'll put it in a reference layer,

57:03SPEAKERand then kind of fade that out,

57:04SPEAKERand then just sketch on top of that reference,

57:07SPEAKERalmost like I'm drawing on onion skin

57:09SPEAKERor something like that.

57:10SPEAKERAnd it's taught me more about shading

57:13SPEAKERand how to do, what I should focus on

57:17SPEAKERand what I shouldn't focus on,

57:18SPEAKERthan anything I've done in the 40 years preceding

57:21SPEAKERin my being a bad drawer.

57:24SPEAKERSo yeah, I couldn't do that on a laptop.

57:29SPEAKERI could have done it on a Surface, I guess,

57:30SPEAKERbut different situation.

57:32SPEAKER- Sure, I mean, the thing I'll say,

57:33SPEAKERI love this M1 MacBook Pro.

57:35SPEAKERIt is the best laptop I've ever owned by a fair margin.

57:39SPEAKERI still only use it when I have to, honestly.

57:41SPEAKERLike I still only use it when I can't do

57:44SPEAKERwhat I need to do on anything else.

57:45SPEAKERLike if I'm just lounging

57:48SPEAKERand I just want to look at Twitter or whatever,

57:50SPEAKERlike I'm still on my six-year-old iPad Pro

57:52SPEAKERbecause there's just a clunkiness factor

57:55SPEAKERto a laptop that you are avoiding.

57:57SPEAKER- Yeah, and because the iOS stuff

58:02SPEAKERis better at the maintenance,

58:05SPEAKERyou know, like you get an update,

58:06SPEAKERI get an OS update every couple of months,

58:08SPEAKERevery month or so, I guess.

58:10SPEAKERBut then the apps just kind of update quietly

58:11SPEAKERin the background without me really having to do anything.

58:14SPEAKERAnd I don't have the, hey, here's 10 things

58:17SPEAKERyou have to update every time I turn on the computer

58:19SPEAKERbecause I don't use it frequently enough.

58:21SPEAKER- Removing that entire layer of friction on a work device.

58:24SPEAKERI mean, I can see the appeal there for sure.

58:26SPEAKERIt's pretty nice, it turns out.

58:29SPEAKERSo that'll do it for us.

58:31SPEAKERApologies again for the all-Apple episode.

58:32SPEAKERI know some people don't really like that.

58:35SPEAKER- You know, like some of the stuff

58:36SPEAKERis like at least very broadly from 10,000 feet

58:41SPEAKERapplicable to Chromebooks, Surfaces,

58:44SPEAKERlike that whole style of device

58:46SPEAKERseems to be going this direction of like,

58:48SPEAKERit's mostly a tablet, but now it's kind of a laptop.

58:50SPEAKERThey plug together, they detach,

58:52SPEAKERlike you can kind of use it in a bunch of different contexts.

58:55SPEAKERLike it just kind of seems like where

58:57SPEAKERthe mobile work space is going.

58:59SPEAKERNot the mobile, you know, like entertainment

59:02SPEAKERand stuff like that, but professional mobile stuff

59:04SPEAKERseems like it's going this way.

59:05SPEAKERSo hopefully this is useful to everybody.

59:08SPEAKER- It's a weird situation.

59:10SPEAKER'Cause like a lot of this lives and dies

59:13SPEAKERbased on the applications that are available.

59:15SPEAKERAnd I feel like Apple,

59:16SPEAKERlike Windows is its own kind of weird thing.

59:19SPEAKER'Cause they're like, you can run full-ass Photoshop.

59:22SPEAKERI mean, there is a version of Photoshop you can run on this.

59:24SPEAKERI have Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher

59:27SPEAKERand Affinity Designer on my laptop, on my iPad.

59:30SPEAKERI use them a lot, right?

59:32SPEAKERAnd it's the same versions that are on my Windows machine,

59:34SPEAKERwhich is fantastic.

59:35SPEAKERThe place that the iPad really breaks down for me

59:38SPEAKERas a Windows primary computer user

59:41SPEAKERis that a lot of the very, very best like,

59:44SPEAKERhey, we won the Apple Design Award bullshit apps,

59:48SPEAKERdon't have Windows counterparts

59:50SPEAKERbecause they're by developers

59:52SPEAKERwho live only in the Apple ecosystem.

59:55SPEAKERAnd like that's where Good Notes breaks down for me.

59:57SPEAKERLike Good Notes is incredible.

59:58SPEAKERIt's really, really neat.

59:59SPEAKERI would absolutely pay $10 for that.

1:00:01SPEAKERNo hesitation, except there's no path

1:00:06SPEAKERfrom Good Notes on my iPad to Good Notes on a PC.

1:00:10SPEAKERThere are a handful of note-taking apps.

1:00:11SPEAKERThere's this thing called Craft that's quite good.

1:00:15SPEAKERAnd it does have Windows versions.

1:00:17SPEAKERIt's like, it kind of splits the difference

1:00:18SPEAKERbetween Notion and Good Notes.

1:00:22SPEAKERBut it's not as good at taking text notes as Notion is.

1:00:24SPEAKERSo Notion, as a primary text note taker,

1:00:27SPEAKERNotion probably wins for me.

1:00:30SPEAKER- Last thing I just want to mention real quick.

1:00:31SPEAKERWe don't need to derail.

1:00:32SPEAKERMaybe we'll touch on this later.

1:00:34SPEAKERI did not realize Microsoft is doing its own ARM CPUs now.

1:00:37SPEAKERI mean, I don't know who's actually designing them, but-

1:00:39SPEAKER- Yeah, they have SOCs.

1:00:41SPEAKER- Yeah, the Surface Pro 9, if you look at the specs,

1:00:44SPEAKERit says it has a Microsoft SQ3 processor in it.

1:00:46SPEAKERAnd like, I know you've been seeing more

1:00:48SPEAKERabout Windows on ARM lately,

1:00:51SPEAKERbut I would've assumed any ARM Microsoft device

1:00:54SPEAKERwas like a Qualcomm of some kind.

1:00:57SPEAKEROh, actually, okay, I'm looking here.

1:00:58SPEAKER- It is, I think it is a Qualcomm, isn't it?

1:01:00SPEAKER- The SQ3 is based on a Snapdragon design, actually.

1:01:04SPEAKERBut they are at least like branding them,

1:01:06SPEAKERthe CPUs as their own now.

1:01:08SPEAKERSo that's kind of an interesting move.

1:01:10SPEAKER- I think they're in the position that Apple was

1:01:12SPEAKERbefore they started designing their whole,

1:01:14SPEAKERtheir SOCs from scratch,

1:01:15SPEAKERwhere they're like taking the off-the-shelf stuff

1:01:17SPEAKERand adding more GPU capability to it

1:01:19SPEAKERor machine learning or whatever it is

1:01:21SPEAKERthey feel like is important, they're jamming on there.

1:01:23SPEAKER- Right.

1:01:24SPEAKER- So anyway, I don't know that this is an approach

1:01:29SPEAKERthat's right for everyone,

1:01:30SPEAKERbut I'm quite happy with it, with my choices so far.

1:01:33SPEAKERSo ask me again in a year.

1:01:35SPEAKER- Sounds quite functional.

1:01:36SPEAKER- And on that note, I guess it's time to wrap up the show.

1:01:39SPEAKER- That's right.

1:01:39SPEAKER- This is the portion of the show

1:01:40SPEAKERwhere we thank our patrons.

1:01:42SPEAKER- Yeah, thank you, our patrons

1:01:43SPEAKERkeep this show quite functional.

1:01:45SPEAKER- Yes, yes, thank you, thank you, patrons.

1:01:47SPEAKERWe do appreciate you.

1:01:49SPEAKERAnd if you would like to find out

1:01:50SPEAKERhow to support the TechPod,

1:01:52SPEAKERwhich is 100% listener supported,

1:01:54SPEAKERyou can go to patreon.com/techpod.

1:01:58SPEAKERAgain, that's patreon.com/techpod.

1:02:02SPEAKERJust one more time, patreon.com/techpod.

1:02:04SPEAKER- That's right, the magic three.

1:02:05SPEAKER- Yeah, you gotta say it three times.

1:02:07SPEAKERI'm not as good as the radio ads people are.

1:02:10SPEAKERBut we like to thank all of our patrons,

1:02:12SPEAKERbut especially our executive producer tier patrons,

1:02:14SPEAKERincluding Nick Johnston,

1:02:16SPEAKERPaddle Creek Games Makers of Fractured Veil,

1:02:18SPEAKERAndrew Slosky, Octo Thorpe Betwixt Jobs Crimes.

1:02:23SPEAKER- Hell yeah.

1:02:24SPEAKER- I don't know, I think it was in my video game discord,

1:02:27SPEAKERbut Bunnyfiend posted some golf ball sized hail

1:02:31SPEAKERthat landed in those storms in the Midwest yesterday.

1:02:34SPEAKER- Yikes.

1:02:35SPEAKER- It was a lot.

1:02:37SPEAKERJust Wedge, thank you, Just Wedge.

1:02:38SPEAKERJoel Krauska, Twinkle Twinkie,

1:02:40SPEAKERDavid Allen, and James Cammack,

1:02:41SPEAKERthank you all so, so much.

1:02:43SPEAKER- Yes.

1:02:43SPEAKER- We appreciate everybody's support.

1:02:45SPEAKER- We do.

1:02:46SPEAKER- 'Cause it lets us do the show,

1:02:47SPEAKERand it gives me a good excuse

1:02:48SPEAKERto talk to my friend Brad every week, which I love.

1:02:50SPEAKER- Yeah, that's a nice thing to have.

1:02:52SPEAKER- Yeah, should everybody have people giving you money

1:02:56SPEAKERto hang out with your friends.

1:02:58SPEAKERAnyway, I hope everybody has a good, good week,

1:03:01SPEAKERand we will be back next.

1:03:02SPEAKEROh, wait, I'm traveling next week,

1:03:04SPEAKERso we're gonna do something different next week.

1:03:05SPEAKER- Yes, we will have a new episode.

1:03:07SPEAKERWe will have a new episode.

1:03:09SPEAKER- We will have a new episode.

1:03:11SPEAKER- Of something.

1:03:12SPEAKER- Of something maybe a little different.

1:03:14SPEAKERSee you all then.

1:03:16SPEAKER(upbeat music)
