166: Someone Else's Cables

2023-01-08 · 1:08:40

00:00SPEAKER- Brad, I had an amazing retail experience the other day.

00:02SPEAKER- Wait, impossible.

00:03SPEAKER- I know, in person.

00:05SPEAKER- What?

00:06SPEAKER- So a gift I got for Christmas was a new laptop sleeve

00:10SPEAKERfor my iPad, just to have something to carry around

00:12SPEAKERin my sleeve from Rick Shaw,

00:14SPEAKERwhich is a local San Francisco bag maker

00:16SPEAKERin the vein of Timbuktu and all that.

00:18SPEAKERThey make messenger bags,

00:20SPEAKERand you can get them all custom and stuff.

00:22SPEAKER- Timbuktu went corporate a long time ago,

00:24SPEAKERso it's nice to hear somebody is doing it

00:26SPEAKERfrom the grassroots again.

00:27SPEAKER- Yeah, the Rick Shaw folks are keeping it,

00:29SPEAKERthey're keeping it real down in the dog patch, and--

00:32SPEAKER- We saw all the best bags and other handmade goods

00:36SPEAKERcome from Dogpatch.

00:37SPEAKER- Well, okay, so when I got to the ordering process,

00:41SPEAKERthere was the button there that was like,

00:42SPEAKERhey, do you wanna pick, you can have it shipped to yourself,

00:44SPEAKERor you can pick it up at the factory.

00:45SPEAKERI was like, hell yeah, I'm picking it up at the factory.

00:47SPEAKERAnd I went down there,

00:49SPEAKERI went and picked up the kiddo after school

00:50SPEAKERearlier this week, and we trucked down there,

00:52SPEAKERand went in and met Mark, who's one of the founders,

00:57SPEAKERwho was sitting in the front office just doing his work.

00:59SPEAKERAnd, look, here's a secret.

01:01SPEAKERIf you have a 10-year-old kid,

01:03SPEAKERand you take them places that are cool like that,

01:05SPEAKERoften the person's like, hey, do you want a tour?

01:08SPEAKERYou're like, fuck yeah, we want a tour.

01:10SPEAKER- This was a pretty good life hack.

01:12SPEAKER- Yeah, so, I mean, look,

01:13SPEAKERthere's some other side effects of the whole thing,

01:16SPEAKERbut yeah, so Mark gave us a tour of the whole shop,

01:20SPEAKERand they have, so they cut the fabric for the bags

01:25SPEAKERon this giant laser cutter, and they had a roll,

01:29SPEAKERthey had a printer that could print on material,

01:30SPEAKERso they could make custom printed material,

01:33SPEAKERand we got to see how they cut it and sew it.

01:35SPEAKERWhen they cut it and sew it,

01:36SPEAKERall the pattern is just kind of on it from the laser,

01:39SPEAKERso the people who are sewing have all the marks and guides

01:42SPEAKERand stuff they need just there ready to go.

01:44SPEAKERAnd also you can get, if you want Velcro sewn on the back

01:47SPEAKERso it sticks in the side of your bag or whatever,

01:48SPEAKERthey'll do that.

01:49SPEAKERIt was really cool, so.

01:51SPEAKER- That's awesome.

01:51SPEAKERAre they using reclaimed materials?

01:53SPEAKER- They use mostly polyester stuff.

01:55SPEAKERI don't know how much of the fibers are recycled.

01:58SPEAKERThey have three or four different main materials they use.

02:00SPEAKERThey have this one called I think X-Pack or something

02:03SPEAKERthat's like a nylon sailcloth-y type thing

02:07SPEAKERthat my messenger bag is made of that,

02:09SPEAKERand I bought it 10 or 11 years ago now,

02:12SPEAKERand it's getting to the point that I probably have

02:15SPEAKERto replace it 'cause it's just dirty

02:17SPEAKERand I can't get it cleaned at this point,

02:19SPEAKERbut yeah, it's been really, really robust and sturdy

02:22SPEAKERand good, and we love Rickshaw.

02:25SPEAKERI'm a fan, I like their work.

02:27SPEAKER- It's not an endorsement.

02:28SPEAKERI mean, kind of an endorsement.

02:30SPEAKER- I'll endorse a small local business for free.

02:32SPEAKERYeah, go buy your bag from them.

02:34SPEAKER- Not an ad, I guess is what I'm trying, #notanad.

02:37SPEAKER- Yeah, they didn't pay us anything.

02:40SPEAKERThe gift was from my sister-in-law who paid money,

02:43SPEAKERcash money, for a "Hey, you can make your sleeve" coupon

02:47SPEAKERwith us, so.

02:49SPEAKER- Legitimate transaction.

02:49SPEAKERI barely remember what it's like to take bags places

02:53SPEAKERnow that I've been working from home for three straight years

02:55SPEAKER- Well, yeah, that's it.

02:56SPEAKERI just wanted to have something to put the iPad keyboard in

03:00SPEAKERwhen I wasn't using it in a place,

03:02SPEAKERit has a pen, pencil sleeve,

03:05SPEAKERand now I have something I can carry around with me

03:08SPEAKERif I want to take the iPad someplace

03:10SPEAKERand treat it like a laptop, so that's nice.

03:12SPEAKER- Hey, time to start leaving the house again.

03:14SPEAKER- I don't know about that.

03:15SPEAKER(upbeat music)

03:26SPEAKER(upbeat music continues)

03:44SPEAKER- Welcome to "Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod."

03:46SPEAKERI'm Will.

03:47SPEAKER- I'm Brad.

03:48SPEAKER- How are you doing, Brad?

03:49SPEAKER- I'm doing well.

03:50SPEAKER- Are you dried out?

03:51SPEAKERHow did you fare through the storms?

03:53SPEAKER- Dried out, oh, fuck.

03:55SPEAKER- Not that kind of dried out, the other kind of dried out.

03:57SPEAKER- I thought you were suggesting something about my time off.

04:01SPEAKERIt was not bad here.

04:02SPEAKERWe got a lot of wind and rain,

04:03SPEAKERbut I mean, we're on the second floor.

04:05SPEAKERSan Francisco, I don't think is like super prone

04:07SPEAKERto flooding in general as well.

04:09SPEAKER- There were a couple of videos that went viral

04:10SPEAKERas flooding from Thursday, I think, or Wednesday

04:14SPEAKERthat were actually flooding from New Year's Eve.

04:15SPEAKERNew Year's Eve was the day it rained five and a half inches

04:19SPEAKERin my backyard and also San Francisco,

04:21SPEAKERand it was the wettest we've ever been here.

04:24SPEAKER- I read an article about California's six mega reservoirs.

04:29SPEAKER- Yeah, how are they doing?

04:31SPEAKER- They're way down, I mean, go figure.

04:34SPEAKERAfter years of drought,

04:35SPEAKERI think they're supposed to be at like 60 something percent

04:38SPEAKERfull at this time of year, and it's like 33 right now.

04:41SPEAKER- Well, halfway there.

04:43SPEAKER- Those reservoirs regained 1% of their capacity

04:46SPEAKERin 24 hours on New Year's Eve.

04:49SPEAKERIt was a lot of rain.

04:51SPEAKER- Yeah, we had like, it rained enough that water

04:54SPEAKERwas seeping up from the ground under the garage.

04:58SPEAKERLike there's a couple of cracks in the garage

05:00SPEAKERthat water was coming up out of.

05:01SPEAKER- That's what happened, okay.

05:03SPEAKER- Yeah, and-

05:04SPEAKER- I hear you crawl space to not fare well.

05:06SPEAKER- Crawl space, we were sitting in the living room

05:09SPEAKERand at like 11 o'clock, it had stopped raining almost,

05:12SPEAKERI was like, oh, thank God it's done, we can stop going.

05:14SPEAKER'Cause like we were going and like moving shit

05:16SPEAKERaround the garage and putting sandbags down

05:19SPEAKERand towels to redivert water and stuff like that.

05:23SPEAKERI mean, look, minor inconvenience ultimately,

05:26SPEAKERbut it had been going for 20 hours at that point.

05:29SPEAKERWe were pretty tired.

05:30SPEAKERSo I was like, oh, thank God we can finally just relax.

05:32SPEAKERI'm gonna have some ice cream and a piece of cake

05:35SPEAKERas one does on New Year's Eve sometimes.

05:37SPEAKERAnd then I went to bed.

05:40SPEAKERAnd right before I was getting ready to go to bed,

05:42SPEAKERthe wifi got weird.

05:45SPEAKERI was like, hey, is your internet down?

05:46SPEAKERShe's like, yeah, my internet's down.

05:47SPEAKERI was like, oh, it's probably just a storm.

05:48SPEAKERAnd then we realized that it was only

05:50SPEAKERhalf of one of the wifi nodes in the house.

05:53SPEAKERAnd also the TV was bad, I was like, wow, it's weird.

05:55SPEAKERIt's almost like my computer wasn't connected anymore.

05:57SPEAKERIt's almost like everything that connects to the internet

05:59SPEAKERthrough the switch in the crawl space

06:01SPEAKERisn't working suddenly.

06:02SPEAKERI was like, oh no.

06:04SPEAKERShe was like, oh no, it can't be that, right?

06:06SPEAKERAnd I was like, no, it's probably not that.

06:07SPEAKERI opened the, like, okay, California houses are weird.

06:10SPEAKERTo get into our crawl space,

06:11SPEAKERyou have to remove everything from the floor of the pantry.

06:15SPEAKER'Cause it's like a trap door in the pantry floor.

06:17SPEAKERSo I unload everything, all the cereal boxes and flour

06:20SPEAKERand all that stuff out of the floor of the pantry,

06:22SPEAKERopen the trap door.

06:23SPEAKERI was like, oh fuck man, there's two inches of water in here.

06:25SPEAKER- I saw a picture of that, that patch panel was swimming.

06:29SPEAKER- It was not good.

06:29SPEAKERThe patch panels, I got a new patch panel coming.

06:32SPEAKERI'm gonna, when I did the initial wire up for this house,

06:38SPEAKERthe person who had had the house before me

06:39SPEAKERhad run a bunch of cat five for phones

06:42SPEAKERand then left this awful snarl under there.

06:45SPEAKERSo I gotta fix all that up now.

06:47SPEAKERI've been putting it off for 13 years and the time has come.

06:50SPEAKER- So is it time to expunge someone else's cables

06:53SPEAKERfrom your home?

06:55SPEAKER- I'm not gonna re-pull the cables

06:56SPEAKER'cause I think it's either cat five E or cat six,

06:58SPEAKERwhich is fine for what I do, but-

07:01SPEAKER- Five E is good for a while.

07:03SPEAKER- Yeah, but yeah, I got a patch panel

07:07SPEAKERand I'm either gonna screw it into the joist underneath

07:12SPEAKERwhen it's dry enough to crawl around under there,

07:14SPEAKERor I might just drill a hole

07:15SPEAKERand put it in the basement at the bottom of the pantry.

07:17SPEAKERAnd then probably gonna get a PoE router or switch

07:21SPEAKERto plug in there so I don't have to have power on it,

07:23SPEAKERwhich would be nice.

07:24SPEAKERI mean, I love power, but not a wall wart or whatever.

07:28SPEAKER- Sure, all right, on to business.

07:30SPEAKER- Yeah, this is the last episode of the month, Brad.

07:34SPEAKER- It sure is, this is possibly the latest we've ever been

07:38SPEAKERwith the Q&A.

07:39SPEAKER- I don't know, so we had a lot of people sign up

07:42SPEAKERfor the Patreon last week,

07:44SPEAKERwhich I'm taking as a tacit endorsement

07:46SPEAKERof our new life's work, the ranking of software.

07:51SPEAKER- Discord was a little mixed on the fact

07:53SPEAKERthat we haven't actually ranked anything.

07:55SPEAKER- Look, it's a serious process.

07:57SPEAKERIf I know anything about ranking things

07:59SPEAKERfrom watching long running video series

08:01SPEAKERis about ranking stuff,

08:01SPEAKERis that you don't walk into this lightly.

08:03SPEAKER- Look, we are approaching this from a professional

08:06SPEAKERand comprehensive position.

08:08SPEAKERPlease allow us time to do our important,

08:11SPEAKERour essential work.

08:12SPEAKER- No, actually, honestly,

08:14SPEAKERI think we would have gotten to ranking faster,

08:16SPEAKERbut after the first episode,

08:18SPEAKERI had so much fun just talking about old software

08:21SPEAKERthat I immediately went into the next one going like,

08:23SPEAKERwhat if we just kept talking about more old software?

08:25SPEAKER- Well, I think at some point in the future

08:27SPEAKERwhen we're desperate for a topic,

08:29SPEAKERwe will do another, we will maybe take the list

08:32SPEAKERof what we have now and add ranks to it,

08:35SPEAKERor at least to two or three things.

08:37SPEAKER- I'll shamelessly admit I was inspired by Kotaku's

08:40SPEAKERlike the best articles that they've had going for years,

08:43SPEAKERwhich are like, it's like the best 12 Xbox games.

08:47SPEAKERAnd like occasionally they'll just come back

08:48SPEAKERand something will get shoved off the list

08:51SPEAKER'cause something better came along.

08:52SPEAKER- Sorry, Dead Rising.

08:54SPEAKER- Dead Rising is a perennial best, thank you.

08:58SPEAKER- Yeah.

08:59SPEAKER- Anyway, yeah, it's questions and answers.

09:01SPEAKER- Qs into As, we're turning Qs into As

09:03SPEAKERas we do always at least once a month.

09:06SPEAKERWe, because of our indiscretions last week,

09:09SPEAKERwe're doing it a week later than we normally do.

09:11SPEAKERAnd we appreciate your humoring us.

09:14SPEAKERBut we're gonna start as we often do

09:17SPEAKERwith an electronic mail.

09:19SPEAKERIf you have an electronic mail you'd like to send in,

09:21SPEAKERyou can send it to techpod@content.town.

09:24SPEAKERNope, that's not it, isn't it?

09:26SPEAKERNo, that's it, that's it.

09:27SPEAKERSorry, I'm out of practice, it's been six weeks.

09:30SPEAKER- I thought you were doing a bit, techpod@content.town.

09:32SPEAKER- Yeah, techpod@content.town.

09:34SPEAKERI started saying it and I was like, no, that's not right.

09:35SPEAKERThat's not what the email address is, but it's a forward.

09:37SPEAKERSo it's an email of lies.

09:39SPEAKERThe thing to know is that we read all of those emails,

09:44SPEAKERbut we don't answer all of them.

09:47SPEAKERYou can also, if you're in the Discord,

09:48SPEAKERif you're a patron and you're in the Discord,

09:50SPEAKERyou can, well, if you wanna be a patron,

09:51SPEAKERgo to patreon.com/techpod.

09:53SPEAKERBut if you're in the Discord,

09:55SPEAKERyou can go to the question seeking answers channel

09:57SPEAKERand post your missive into the void there

09:59SPEAKERwhere it will disappear and be mixed in

10:02SPEAKERwith like a thousand messages from cake batter.

10:04SPEAKERSo one of the questions this week or this month,

10:11SPEAKERnot from cake batter, but I forget who it was from,

10:13SPEAKERwas what does cake batter have on you guys?

10:17SPEAKERWhat he has on us is an endless supply

10:20SPEAKERof fantastic questions.

10:23SPEAKER- Exactly.

10:24SPEAKERSo our first email is from Scott who says,

10:26SPEAKER"With the recent hacking of LastPass,

10:28SPEAKERI wanted to know your opinions about password managers.

10:31SPEAKERI myself have never used one simply

10:33SPEAKERbecause the thought of all the eggs in one basket scared me.

10:36SPEAKERYes, we all could do better to make different passwords,

10:39SPEAKERbut it's always hard to manage.

10:41SPEAKERWhat do you guys do to manage your passwords

10:42SPEAKERif you don't mind me asking?

10:43SPEAKERAnd if you used LastPass, are you going to ditch it?"

10:45SPEAKERSo here is the first answer to this question is

10:49SPEAKERif you are using LastPass,

10:50SPEAKERgiven what I understand now about their security practices,

10:54SPEAKERyou should 100% ditch it.

10:55SPEAKERIt seems to be problematic at best.

10:57SPEAKER- That breach was severe.

10:59SPEAKERSo a lot of people's straight up password vaults

11:01SPEAKERwere breached and taken from LastPass

11:04SPEAKERand like granted those passwords on the vaults

11:08SPEAKERhave to be brute forced potentially,

11:09SPEAKERalthough I've seen some suggestion on Twitter

11:11SPEAKERand this is where it's hard to verify.

11:12SPEAKERI've seen people like intuiting Twitter threads

11:15SPEAKERwhere they're like, "I think this breach

11:17SPEAKERwas actually much worse than they're letting on

11:18SPEAKERand here are my anecdotal or circumstantial pieces

11:22SPEAKERof evidence for that."

11:22SPEAKERAnd who knows if that's accurate or not, but.

11:24SPEAKER- Well, so the problem is that only a limited number

11:27SPEAKERof fields in the records are encrypted on LastPass.

11:30SPEAKERSo for example, I think your log,

11:33SPEAKERyour password obviously is encrypted.

11:35SPEAKERYour email address may or may not be encrypted.

11:38SPEAKERAny other fields is saved,

11:39SPEAKERyour login may or may not be encrypted.

11:41SPEAKER- Oh, that's not good. - Your username.

11:43SPEAKERSo what's happening is it's created a massive vector

11:46SPEAKERfor phishing for people who are a part of this breach.

11:49SPEAKERThe other password managers handle is even cloud-based ones.

11:54SPEAKERSo there's different options.

11:56SPEAKERIf you're wanting to do, first off,

11:58SPEAKERyou should use a password manager.

11:59SPEAKER- Yes.

12:00SPEAKER- When you set up your password manager,

12:02SPEAKERyou should make sure that there is a recovery process

12:05SPEAKERthat you can access and that you know how to use.

12:07SPEAKERAnd you should probably even try it

12:08SPEAKERbefore you start using it heavily.

12:11SPEAKERIf you use something like 1Password,

12:14SPEAKER1Password, when you set up the account,

12:16SPEAKERyou can provide a failover way to access it.

12:19SPEAKERIf you have a family plan, for example,

12:23SPEAKEReverybody else in your family has the ability to restore,

12:28SPEAKERlike basically 1Password gives my partner

12:34SPEAKERa way to, with notifying me, break into my vault

12:37SPEAKERor me to break into her vault if something,

12:40SPEAKERsome disaster strikes and she's injured

12:41SPEAKERand I can't get to her passwords

12:42SPEAKERand I need to pay the mortgage or something,

12:45SPEAKERor vice versa for me.

12:49SPEAKERThat notifies everyone involved

12:51SPEAKERand it basically uses a recovery process.

12:54SPEAKERBut like 1Password encrypts everything twice.

12:56SPEAKERIt encrypts the vaults and it encrypts the records

13:00SPEAKERand then it encrypts the vaults.

13:02SPEAKERSo you're like double protected.

13:04SPEAKERThere's no metadata around your 1Password account

13:07SPEAKERthat's unprotected.

13:08SPEAKERBitwarden works in a similar way.

13:10SPEAKERSo you can choose to put Bitwarden wherever you want.

13:12SPEAKERYou can put it on your Dropbox, you can put it on your NAS,

13:14SPEAKERyou can put it on your OneDrive,

13:15SPEAKERyou can put it on your Google Drive,

13:16SPEAKERyou can put it on a USB thumb drive that you carry around,

13:18SPEAKERwhich sounds terrifying because then if you lose that,

13:20SPEAKERyou're really hosed.

13:21SPEAKER- Don't trust your passwords to a USB drive.

13:23SPEAKER- No.

13:25SPEAKERI like to recommend cloud services for this

13:28SPEAKERjust because for the vast majority of users,

13:31SPEAKERthe cloud service is gonna be more reliable and safe

13:34SPEAKERthan trying to roll your own.

13:35SPEAKER- Yeah, you're not wrong.

13:36SPEAKERI mean, that is also what introduces the possibility

13:38SPEAKERof this kind of breach.

13:39SPEAKERBut if you feel secure in the security practices

13:43SPEAKERof your chosen host,

13:45SPEAKERthen hopefully that's mitigated pretty much.

13:49SPEAKER- I follow a bunch of InfoSec people,

13:51SPEAKERlike hardcore, hey, the people that people call

13:57SPEAKERwhen stuff goes bad.

13:59SPEAKERAnd their general recommendations are,

14:01SPEAKERhey, Bitwarden is really good if you are competent enough

14:04SPEAKERto make sure that, like, for example,

14:06SPEAKERif you save your Bitwarden in a Dropbox,

14:08SPEAKERyou have to make sure you have access to the Dropbox

14:10SPEAKERwithout your password manager, right?

14:13SPEAKERSo you need to make sure you have printed out recovery keys

14:15SPEAKERsomeplace where you can get to them

14:17SPEAKERand know how to find them.

14:19SPEAKERAnd if you're capable of doing that and making sure

14:22SPEAKERthat you haven't had any logical loopholes in your scheme,

14:26SPEAKERgo nuts with Bitwarden, it's great.

14:28SPEAKER- Yeah, Bitwarden is what I've been using

14:30SPEAKERfor the last, gosh, four years now, maybe, or something.

14:33SPEAKERAnd I've been quite happy with it.

14:35SPEAKER- The other recommendation was the InfoSec people

14:38SPEAKERall like 1Password, it seems like.

14:40SPEAKER- Yeah, those are the two.

14:41SPEAKERThose are the two services that I have not seen impugned

14:44SPEAKERin any major way in the last several years.

14:47SPEAKER- Yeah, and 1Password is one of the first ones

14:50SPEAKERwho was doing this.

14:50SPEAKERThey've been a good, there's also,

14:53SPEAKERyou can also use the stuff that's built into your browser,

14:56SPEAKERI find, or OS, you know, macOS has a key manager now.

15:00SPEAKER- Everything does, it's kind of crazy how many things

15:03SPEAKERthat you punch passwords into will now offer

15:05SPEAKERto manage them for you.

15:07SPEAKER- Yeah, I like to pay, like I'm happy to pay

15:10SPEAKERand/or set up a third-party system to do that.

15:13SPEAKERJust so, for example, like the Mac thing only works

15:15SPEAKERon Macs and iPhones, right, and iPads.

15:19SPEAKERThere's no, I mean, you can access it, I think,

15:20SPEAKERfrom the web on a Windows client, but that's no good.

15:24SPEAKERYour Firefox one only works in Firefox,

15:26SPEAKERyour Chrome one only works in Chrome,

15:27SPEAKERyour Windows one only works in Windows.

15:29SPEAKER- Yep, exactly.

15:30SPEAKER- Yeah, by like paying for 1Password or using BitLocker,

15:34SPEAKERyou have a broad ecosystem of tools that are available

15:39SPEAKERon all the platforms you might use, yeah.

15:41SPEAKER- Yes, something platform-agnostic is always the way to go.

15:44SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, I have seen a number of people

15:47SPEAKERwho are just kind of skittish about cloud-based

15:50SPEAKERpassword vaults in general and have been either moving

15:54SPEAKERtowards self-hosting or have been doing that

15:56SPEAKERfrom the beginning.

15:57SPEAKERLike that might be a little too much management for me.

15:59SPEAKER- I feel like I wouldn't want my passwords

16:03SPEAKERto only live on my NAS.

16:05SPEAKER- Yeah, it's a single point of failure

16:07SPEAKERthat is maybe just a little dodgy.

16:10SPEAKER- Like I got--

16:11SPEAKER- Once you're really dedicated to managing it

16:12SPEAKERand making sure you've got redundancy.

16:15SPEAKER- Before 1Password did the cloud thing,

16:17SPEAKERI used to host it in a Dropbox folder which gave me,

16:22SPEAKERand then I backed it up to a local hard drive

16:24SPEAKERon my computer outside of Dropbox.

16:28SPEAKERThat was a redundancy enough for me.

16:30SPEAKERLosing the password vault would be pretty bad at this point.

16:34SPEAKERBut I mean, the worst case is you just have to go through

16:35SPEAKERand recover all your passwords for all the accounts you use

16:38SPEAKERand that's just an ongoing process.

16:40SPEAKERBut switch to a user password manager,

16:43SPEAKERit's two weeks pain in the ass.

16:46SPEAKERLearn how to use it on your phone

16:47SPEAKERand how to update your files on your phone

16:49SPEAKERso that apps are attached to the right URLs

16:51SPEAKERand stuff like that.

16:52SPEAKERAnd then once you, I went through this process,

16:55SPEAKERmy partner did not want to use a password manager,

16:57SPEAKERdid not want to use a password manager.

16:58SPEAKERWe got hacked.

17:00SPEAKERShe switched to using a password manager

17:01SPEAKERand it's like I can't believe I didn't use

17:03SPEAKERa password manager before.

17:04SPEAKER- That's exactly the last thing I was gonna say to Scott here

17:06SPEAKERwho doesn't use one.

17:08SPEAKERIt is a pain in the ass for about two weeks.

17:10SPEAKERThere is a hump that you need to get over

17:12SPEAKERof putting all the passwords in there,

17:14SPEAKERlearning how to use it, et cetera, et cetera.

17:15SPEAKERBut once you do, it will make your life easier.

17:18SPEAKER- The integration with phones and web browsers on phones,

17:21SPEAKERespecially in apps on phones is so much better now

17:23SPEAKERthan it was even like two years ago.

17:25SPEAKER- Absolutely, like just about anything I log into

17:28SPEAKERon an iPhone at this point,

17:29SPEAKERI just thumbprint my way into it and that's about it.

17:31SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't even have to thumbprint.

17:32SPEAKERI just look at my phone and it's like, hey man, I know you.

17:35SPEAKER- Like it is both more secure and more convenient

17:37SPEAKERat the same time.

17:38SPEAKERAgain, once you get over that initial pain

17:41SPEAKERof getting it set up.

17:43SPEAKERAnd also just one other piece of advice,

17:45SPEAKERuse the password generator in there

17:47SPEAKERand generate unique passwords for everything.

17:50SPEAKER- Yeah, the good password managers,

17:52SPEAKERI don't know if Bitwarden does this, but 1Password does

17:54SPEAKERand a lot of the other commercial products do.

17:57SPEAKERBut they also will look at stuff like have I been pwned

18:00SPEAKERand they'll scan your file

18:06SPEAKERto see if you've used the same password in 50 places

18:08SPEAKERand will give you a notification

18:09SPEAKERso you know all the places you have to go change

18:11SPEAKERyour passwords and stuff like that.

18:15SPEAKERHighly, highly recommended.

18:16SPEAKERAlso, the other thing is you can use a hardware key

18:19SPEAKERto lock your password vault if you're concerned about it.

18:23SPEAKERSo you can get like a YubiKey

18:25SPEAKERand 1Password will work with that

18:26SPEAKERso that you can require the first time you set it up

18:29SPEAKERon a device or every time you use it

18:31SPEAKERto touch the YubiKey to your device.

18:33SPEAKERI don't think I do it every time I use it

18:34SPEAKER'cause you use it a lot,

18:35SPEAKERbut I would do it the first time you set up probably.

18:37SPEAKER- Yes, all right.

18:39SPEAKERShall we move to the Discord questions?

18:41SPEAKER- Yes, what do we got?

18:43SPEAKER- All right, first question from Discord comes from Matbot.

18:47SPEAKERI've basically given up on getting a Raspberry Pi 4.

18:51SPEAKERAre there any other single board options

18:53SPEAKERfor moving my Home Assistant install to?

18:55SPEAKERI want to get off of my Raspberry Pi 3 for reasons.

18:59SPEAKERThere's like three things I wanna talk about here.

19:01SPEAKERI mean, the first is like you still can get Raspberry Pis.

19:05SPEAKERIt is a pain for sure.

19:06SPEAKER- It's getting a lot easier though.

19:08SPEAKER- Yeah, so the way I got one three or four months ago

19:11SPEAKERwas by following the RPi locator Twitter account

19:15SPEAKERand just set up the most aggressive notifications

19:19SPEAKERon that account you can.

19:20SPEAKERSo it'll basically ping your phone every time they tweet.

19:23SPEAKERAnd then you do have to be a little vigilant

19:25SPEAKERand just kind of look out for notifications,

19:27SPEAKERbut hopefully you will get lucky

19:29SPEAKERwhen somebody has one in stock and can snipe one.

19:33SPEAKER- Like right now you can buy Raspberry Pi,

19:35SPEAKERas we record this, you can buy Pi 4s in,

19:37SPEAKERI don't know where MX is in Mexico.

19:40SPEAKER- Like Mexico, that's the Mexico country code.

19:43SPEAKER- But yeah, like there are a bunch of Raspberry Pi 4s

19:47SPEAKERin stock even as we speak.

19:48SPEAKERSo you just have to pay attention.

19:51SPEAKER- Yes, they also have a site

19:52SPEAKERif you wanna do a little more filtering on territories

19:54SPEAKERand models and stuff like that.

19:56SPEAKER- Yeah, you can set it to make a sound.

19:58SPEAKERSo if you're sitting at your computer, it makes a noise.

20:00SPEAKER- But since they're talking about moving a Home Assistant

20:04SPEAKERinstalled, do you have any updates

20:05SPEAKERon your Home Assistant yellow?

20:07SPEAKERWhere's that whole thing at?

20:09SPEAKER- Last I looked at shipping in late January.

20:11SPEAKER- Okay, so you still don't have the hardware yet.

20:13SPEAKERI knew it was close.

20:15SPEAKER- Yeah, I have the compute module.

20:16SPEAKERI got two actually, 'cause you know how I operate.

20:20SPEAKERWell, not always the smartest.

20:25SPEAKER- Those things are so in demand.

20:26SPEAKERI don't think that was the worst idea.

20:27SPEAKER- It was so hard to find them.

20:29SPEAKERAnd I got one from a Canadian seller like three months ago

20:33SPEAKERand it looked like it was gonna ship in September.

20:35SPEAKERBut yeah, it looks like...

20:37SPEAKERSo I'm a weird one 'cause I did a PoE one

20:39SPEAKER'cause I have PoE switches in the garage

20:41SPEAKERand that way I don't have to run another wall work.

20:44SPEAKERIt says that it is shipping in January.

20:51SPEAKERIt says estimated January 27, 2023, so later this month.

20:54SPEAKER- Curious to hear how that works.

20:55SPEAKERSo for people who didn't hear

20:56SPEAKERthe Home Assistant FOSS pod a few months ago,

20:59SPEAKERthe yellow is basically their own bespoke box

21:02SPEAKERfor running Home Assistant, right?

21:03SPEAKERThat you plug a Raspberry Pi compute module four into.

21:07SPEAKER- Yeah, so basically instead of using

21:09SPEAKERthe standard Raspberry Pi model with the headers

21:13SPEAKERand stuff like that, that's always the same shape.

21:15SPEAKERIt's basically just a drop-in socket, I think,

21:17SPEAKERand you put the compute module in there

21:19SPEAKERwhich has the SOC only and then all the ports

21:22SPEAKERand stuff like that are on this daughter board.

21:24SPEAKERAnd theoretically you'll be able to upgrade

21:26SPEAKERthe chip at some point.

21:27SPEAKER- Oh, interesting, I didn't think about that.

21:29SPEAKERThat's very cool.

21:31SPEAKER- Yeah, they specifically give you,

21:33SPEAKERI think they want you to do ones

21:35SPEAKERthat have storage and RAM.

21:38SPEAKERI mean, they all have RAM obviously,

21:39SPEAKERbut it's like, I think I got a 16 gig storage,

21:43SPEAKER16 gig RAM one, but I can't remember.

21:46SPEAKER- Compute module?

21:46SPEAKER- Yeah, compute module.

21:47SPEAKER- I thought, do they go above eight?

21:49SPEAKER- I think you can get a 16 gig one.

21:51SPEAKER- Wow, yeah, the full model B four tops out at eight gig.

21:56SPEAKERI didn't realize the--

21:57SPEAKER- Oh, maybe the compute modules aren't,

21:58SPEAKERmaybe it's only eight, I can't remember.

21:59SPEAKERI got, basically I was able to get one

22:01SPEAKERthat was a small one cheaper, a small cheap one fast,

22:06SPEAKER'cause I wasn't sure that I was gonna be able

22:07SPEAKERto find the other one.

22:08SPEAKERAnd then that one, the day after that one shipped,

22:11SPEAKERI got the, I was able to get one of the bigger ones

22:14SPEAKERthat'll ship later, so.

22:15SPEAKER- The compute module is really becoming pretty popular,

22:19SPEAKERI think, like a lot of projects like this

22:21SPEAKERare starting to move from,

22:23SPEAKER'cause so many of these projects don't need all the frills

22:25SPEAKERthat are on a full Raspberry Pi.

22:27SPEAKER- Well, yeah, but in like this case,

22:29SPEAKERthey also can put on a Z-Wave and a matter radio,

22:31SPEAKERa Zigbee and a matter radio on the board,

22:33SPEAKERwhich is really convenient.

22:34SPEAKER- So the Pi KVM is currently kickstarting

22:37SPEAKERthe version four of their whole thing.

22:40SPEAKERI've got a version three, which is based on a full model B,

22:42SPEAKERand like it doesn't use most of the ports

22:44SPEAKERand most of the excess stuff on that thing.

22:47SPEAKER- Yeah.

22:48SPEAKER- And so they have moved to their own daughter board

22:51SPEAKERthat you just plug a compute module into,

22:52SPEAKER'cause most people just want the processing heft

22:55SPEAKERof a Raspberry Pi, not all the other stuff.

22:57SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, it makes sense.

22:58SPEAKERIt's a cool thing.

22:59SPEAKERI'm excited to see what happens in the future

23:03SPEAKERwith that kind of thing.

23:04SPEAKER'Cause it's basically like,

23:06SPEAKERit gives you a more modular design,

23:09SPEAKERbut the benefits of the Raspberry Pi

23:10SPEAKERbeing a relatively straightforward platform.

23:12SPEAKER- Yes, it's neat.

23:14SPEAKERIt will be more neat when they are more widely available,

23:16SPEAKERbut it's neat.

23:17SPEAKERAlso, I don't know if I should say this,

23:19SPEAKERbut I think it's pretty confirmed.

23:21SPEAKERI think we will be talking to-

23:22SPEAKER- Don't say it, don't say it, don't jinx it.

23:24SPEAKER- Okay, I'm not gonna say anything.

23:26SPEAKER- Yeah.

23:27SPEAKER- Stay tuned.

23:29SPEAKERAll right, question from Shayat,

23:32SPEAKERI think is somehow I'm going to say this username.

23:34SPEAKER- It sounds good.

23:35SPEAKER- What's your favorite cured meat?

23:37SPEAKER- Oh man, prosciutto.

23:39SPEAKERIs prosciutto a cured meat?

23:40SPEAKER- Man, oh yeah, definitely.

23:43SPEAKER- Bacon's a cured meat, right?

23:44SPEAKER- I'm no authority, but I would assume prosciutto is cured.

23:47SPEAKERProsciutto is so indulgent to me

23:50SPEAKERthat it's like a three times a year thing or something.

23:55SPEAKERIt's not something I could eat all the time.

23:57SPEAKERIt's too decadent.

23:59SPEAKER- I make a prosciutto and arugula sandwich

24:01SPEAKERfor lunch on the reg.

24:03SPEAKER- Kind of cheese, don't tell me, don't tell me.

24:08SPEAKERStarted to say like a Swiss or a provolone,

24:10SPEAKERbut that sounds too fancy.

24:11SPEAKER- I'll do a warm freeze schmear.

24:12SPEAKER- Yeah, actually you need something a little more.

24:15SPEAKER- Yeah, I put a little olive oil, salt and pepper

24:18SPEAKERon the arugula and then toss that

24:21SPEAKERand just put that on there and...

24:25SPEAKER- We eat a tremendous amount of ham, perhaps too much ham.

24:28SPEAKER- I don't like ham, it turns out.

24:30SPEAKER- Really?

24:31SPEAKER- Not really, I know.

24:33SPEAKER- We're big fans of the $5 Friday at the Safeway Deli here.

24:38SPEAKER- Oh, I love the $5 Friday.

24:39SPEAKER- They used to rotate between turkey roast beef

24:43SPEAKERand ham pretty frequently at that thing.

24:44SPEAKERYou could get a pound of one of those

24:46SPEAKERfor five bucks every week.

24:48SPEAKERIt's just been ham for the last year or more.

24:52SPEAKERToo much ham in here.

24:54SPEAKER- Oh, so our Safeway, they do a different one every week.

24:58SPEAKER- Oh man, I gotta go to your Safeway.

25:00SPEAKER- So you only get...

25:02SPEAKERLook, I haven't been inside the Safeway

25:03SPEAKERat the Deli counter in a while.

25:05SPEAKERBut yeah, the $5 Friday that we used to do,

25:10SPEAKERthe peppered turkey was what I always get.

25:11SPEAKER- Yes.

25:12SPEAKER- I love that peppered turkey.

25:13SPEAKER- And at the same time of those three,

25:15SPEAKERI will say that ham is the most versatile.

25:17SPEAKER- Yeah, like I'll put ham in a egg or something

25:19SPEAKERfor some breakfast, make an egg sando.

25:21SPEAKERLike a turkey breakfast sandwich just feels wrong somehow.

25:25SPEAKER- Eh, I've had turkey breakfast tacos before

25:28SPEAKERthat are pretty delish.

25:30SPEAKERI love a salami, like the real question is here,

25:32SPEAKERwhat is the least, like is there a cured meat

25:35SPEAKERyou don't like?

25:35SPEAKERAnd I can't think of one.

25:37SPEAKERLike a salami, I'll eat a salami.

25:39SPEAKERI'll eat a copa, capicola.

25:46SPEAKERDid you ever have that, did you ever come down

25:49SPEAKERto the mission office, protested and have lunch

25:53SPEAKERat Giordano Brothers?

25:55SPEAKEROh, there was one out, the other Giordano Brothers

25:58SPEAKERis out in North Beach where they make those,

26:01SPEAKERI think they're Pittsburgh style sandwiches maybe,

26:03SPEAKERwhere they, you put like a bunch of salted meat

26:06SPEAKERand then some coleslaw dressing with like oil

26:09SPEAKERand vinegar on it and then just some french fries

26:13SPEAKERand just pile that onto the whole sandwich

26:15SPEAKERand then just yum, yum, yum, it's delish.

26:17SPEAKER- That sounds very good.

26:19SPEAKER- I did not.

26:19SPEAKER- I don't think they survived the pandemic,

26:21SPEAKERbut anyway, ripped Giordano Brothers.

26:25SPEAKER- Okay, question from prolific Discord user

26:30SPEAKERwho I never quite decided how to pronounce, MRJD.

26:33SPEAKER- I think it's Mr. JD, right?

26:35SPEAKER- Merged.

26:36SPEAKER- Oh, merged is good too, man, okay.

26:38SPEAKER- Merged or Mr. JD or MRJD.

26:42SPEAKER- Now you've put questions in my head

26:44SPEAKERabout how to pronounce this.

26:45SPEAKER- A delightful user who asks this question.

26:49SPEAKERIf you had no other responsibilities for one year,

26:51SPEAKERwhat project would you want to work on for that entire time?

26:54SPEAKEROne full year, no restriction on cost,

26:56SPEAKERbut you have to do all the work yourself.

27:00SPEAKERI have an answer if you don't have an answer.

27:02SPEAKER- Does this pay my bills too?

27:03SPEAKER- I have an answer.

27:04SPEAKER- Can this be a full-time job?

27:05SPEAKER- I think that's a hobby.

27:07SPEAKERThat's too much complexity for this question.

27:09SPEAKERI think this is a, you exist outside of time and space,

27:13SPEAKERyou can just do what you want kind of thing.

27:15SPEAKER- Oh man, okay, what's your answer?

27:17SPEAKER- I would, well, it's two tiered.

27:20SPEAKERI would try to write a piece of,

27:22SPEAKERa functional piece of software.

27:24SPEAKER- Ooh.

27:25SPEAKER- Tier one is something that like builds and works to spec.

27:30SPEAKERTier two would be the lofty stretch goal

27:34SPEAKERwould be to make it something good enough

27:35SPEAKERthat people would actually want to use it.

27:37SPEAKER- Would you make a game

27:38SPEAKERor would you make something like near softy?

27:41SPEAKER- It would probably be more utility based or media.

27:44SPEAKERIt might be something media related

27:45SPEAKERor something network related or all of the above.

27:49SPEAKEROne idea I had recently

27:51SPEAKERthat I had absolutely no skill to approach

27:53SPEAKERis that little open source music streaming service

27:57SPEAKERor server own tone that I use.

28:00SPEAKER- Yeah.

28:01SPEAKER- Like has kind of capacity to hook

28:02SPEAKERother sorts of audio streams into it.

28:05SPEAKERAnd there's an open source project called VGM stream

28:08SPEAKERthat plays a bunch of the old console game format

28:12SPEAKERor music formats like from SNES, Genesis, stuff like that.

28:16SPEAKERLike I would love to find a way

28:17SPEAKERto integrate those two things together.

28:19SPEAKERSo you could play old game music

28:20SPEAKERfrom the original tracked files.

28:23SPEAKER- Would you want to make a game?

28:26SPEAKER- Maybe, I don't know.

28:27SPEAKERI've always, the thing I've always thought

28:29SPEAKERabout game development is like,

28:31SPEAKERwhen I got to the point where I was moving a box

28:33SPEAKERaround the screen myself and making it do things,

28:35SPEAKERlike if I felt like that magic kind of burst

28:38SPEAKERof this is amazing when I did that,

28:41SPEAKERthen that would probably be my cue

28:43SPEAKERthat I should try to make a game.

28:44SPEAKER- I'm gonna say the UE5 stuff is really, really neat.

28:48SPEAKERLike the things that you can do just kind of off the shelf

28:51SPEAKERwithout having to do a whole lot of other work,

28:54SPEAKERthey've lowered the, like you can make things

28:58SPEAKERthat look really incredible really,

28:59SPEAKERreally easily in UE5, it turns out.

29:01SPEAKER- So my problem is that I think I, at this point,

29:04SPEAKERI'm more interested in code as practice or form

29:07SPEAKERthan I am in the end goal.

29:09SPEAKER- Got it.

29:10SPEAKER- Without an end goal in mind, like I wanna do a thing,

29:12SPEAKERbut I don't know what I wanna do with the thing,

29:14SPEAKERand that makes it difficult to direct your efforts,

29:16SPEAKERyou know what I mean?

29:18SPEAKERLike my goal would not be, make a game,

29:20SPEAKERhow am I gonna get there in the most efficient way possible?

29:22SPEAKERIt is, I want to understand this practice at a low level.

29:26SPEAKER- Got it.

29:27SPEAKERI can see that.

29:28SPEAKERI mean, I think there's something kind of, yeah,

29:33SPEAKERthere's something magical about manipulating the computer

29:35SPEAKERin a way that you're not,

29:36SPEAKERthat's outside of your normal realm of what

29:40SPEAKERyou're accustomed to, right?

29:41SPEAKER- Yeah, making a few things, moving data around,

29:44SPEAKERstoring it, manipulating it.

29:46SPEAKER- I think I would spend time making models

29:49SPEAKERand learning how to get real good at making,

29:50SPEAKERnot making kits, but like--

29:52SPEAKER- Oh, like from scratch.

29:54SPEAKER- Like from scratch, making old school plastic shell models.

29:57SPEAKER- I certainly don't already know that you sound

30:00SPEAKERlike you just watched that ILM documentary.

30:02SPEAKER- Look, okay, so on the camera today,

30:05SPEAKERone day Gina and the kiddo went out

30:07SPEAKERand spent some time with, to see some friends,

30:10SPEAKERand I was like, I'm staying home,

30:12SPEAKERI don't want to be by myself today.

30:14SPEAKERAnd I had a BDRE kit from that,

30:17SPEAKERthe little Lego robot from Jedi Outcast.

30:20SPEAKER- Oh yeah.

30:21SPEAKER- And I built the-- - Oh, BD-1?

30:23SPEAKER- Is it, I thought it's BDRE, BD-1, yeah, BD-1.

30:26SPEAKERYou're right, it's BD-1. - Yes.

30:28SPEAKER- I had one of those kits that I'd gotten from Lego,

30:31SPEAKERfor a Lego kit, and I sat down

30:33SPEAKERand I put the ILM documentary on my iPad,

30:35SPEAKERon the dining room table, and I sat there for four hours

30:39SPEAKERlistening to documentaries and building Lego,

30:41SPEAKERand it was freaking awesome.

30:43SPEAKER- That documentary is so good.

30:44SPEAKER- Documentary's really good.

30:45SPEAKERI'm like halfway through, I gotta finish the back half of it.

30:48SPEAKER- We should maybe do an episode about that.

30:50SPEAKER- I'm into that, I like that idea.

30:51SPEAKERI like that Disney, one of the things I like about Disney

30:53SPEAKERis they're doing a lot of how stuff is made.

30:56SPEAKERThe other one that's really good is the Imagineering one.

30:58SPEAKERI don't know if you watched that one.

30:59SPEAKERSo it's about the birth of Disneyland

31:01SPEAKERand the technology behind the original impetus

31:06SPEAKERfor the parks and the design and all the things

31:10SPEAKERthat they learned in the early days.

31:11SPEAKERAnd it goes through the pre-opening of Disneyland,

31:16SPEAKERthe film stuff, the post-opening of Disneyland,

31:20SPEAKERwhat they learned when the car ride wasn't on rails

31:24SPEAKERand stuff like that, all the way through Disney World

31:27SPEAKERin the '80s and the dark times and the whole thing.

31:30SPEAKERIt's really good, and it's the same kind of approach,

31:32SPEAKERlike interviewing people who were there,

31:34SPEAKERtalking, it's a little bit of a hagiography of wall.

31:38SPEAKER- Yeah, of course, that's to be expected

31:40SPEAKERabout all of the stuff that they make to some degree.

31:42SPEAKERThey've also been doing that for most of the Star Wars series

31:45SPEAKERas far as I know.

31:46SPEAKEREvery show gets some kind of making of

31:48SPEAKERlike a month or two after it finishes.

31:50SPEAKER- Yeah, they do it on the Marvel stuff too.

31:53SPEAKERI think they call it assembled.

31:54SPEAKERThey call them assembleds in there.

31:57SPEAKERI find the modern production stuff

31:58SPEAKERa little bit less interesting

31:59SPEAKER'cause it's much more of an industry now.

32:02SPEAKERThe ILM one is interesting because those...

32:06SPEAKERILM was literally just a bunch of weirdos

32:08SPEAKERwho had a bunch of different skills

32:09SPEAKERthat they kind of grouped up together

32:11SPEAKERand had been making commercials or surfboards in some cases.

32:16SPEAKERAnd yeah, anyway, it's worth watching that stuff.

32:19SPEAKERWe should definitely do an episode about that

32:20SPEAKER'cause it's a good call.

32:21SPEAKER- Yeah, that's why that stuff is so much more romantic

32:24SPEAKERbecause it is like there was no template,

32:26SPEAKERthere was no existing industry

32:28SPEAKERto support what they were doing.

32:29SPEAKERThey just had to figure it all out from scratch.

32:31SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, I think Phil Tippett is in there.

32:37SPEAKERPhil did a lot of the stop motion work

32:40SPEAKERon the early "Star Wars" stuff

32:41SPEAKERand then went on to do like...

32:47SPEAKERWhat's the Verhoeven movie?

32:48SPEAKERThe Starship Troopers and the animatics,

32:52SPEAKERthe controls for the dinosaurs

32:54SPEAKERand "Jurassic Park" and stuff like that.

32:56SPEAKERHe said that literally he met this guy

32:59SPEAKERwho knew George and was like,

33:01SPEAKERhe was like, "Hey, we were hiring people who could do stuff.

33:03SPEAKER"Do you wanna come do stuff?"

33:04SPEAKERHe's like, "Yeah, we'll come do stuff."

33:05SPEAKERHe's like, "What do you need us to do?"

33:06SPEAKERAnd he's like, "We don't know.

33:08SPEAKER"We just need people who could build things."

33:09SPEAKERSo they came in and they just started building stuff

33:12SPEAKERand then they needed a shot that George wanted stop motion

33:16SPEAKERfor the space chess board in "Star Wars."

33:21SPEAKERAnd Phil was like, "Oh, I know how to do that.

33:23SPEAKER"We can do that."

33:24SPEAKERAnd then they did some stop motion.

33:25SPEAKERSo the career was built.

33:28SPEAKER- Yeah, there's a lot of amazing stuff.

33:29SPEAKER- It's good stuff.

33:32SPEAKER- Let's see, here's a question from UmochiYoshi.

33:37SPEAKERThat broccoli casserole was amazing.

33:41SPEAKERHave any other recipes you'd like to bless us with?

33:44SPEAKER- Got anything else?

33:46SPEAKER- Gosh, in the holiday vein,

33:48SPEAKERI've got two that we did not get around to making

33:50SPEAKERduring the holidays that I think we're going to make tonight

33:52SPEAKERbecause they have to get made.

33:54SPEAKEROne of them is my mom's sausage balls.

33:57SPEAKER- Ooh.

33:58SPEAKER- Which are, I think I could name

33:59SPEAKERall of the ingredients right now.

34:01SPEAKERIt's basically Bisquick mix, sharp cheddar cheese,

34:06SPEAKERcheese whiz.

34:07SPEAKER- Oh, wow.

34:08SPEAKER- And Jimmy Dean sausage.

34:10SPEAKER- Which Jimmy Dean sausage though, sage?

34:13SPEAKER- Sage was generally our go-to.

34:15SPEAKER- Okay.

34:16SPEAKER- I think she would occasionally get the hot

34:18SPEAKERif they didn't have the sage.

34:20SPEAKER- Okay.

34:21SPEAKER- And I'd have to look at the recipe.

34:23SPEAKERThere might be some, for all I know,

34:25SPEAKERthere's some Crisco in there or something,

34:27SPEAKERbut basically you just mix all that stuff up together

34:31SPEAKERand form it into balls and bake it.

34:33SPEAKER- Bake it, yeah.

34:33SPEAKERWe- - It's very good.

34:35SPEAKER- I gotta say, we had a hard time finding sausage

34:39SPEAKERwhen we moved out here that was worth a damn.

34:41SPEAKER- Really?

34:42SPEAKER- Yeah, 'cause like, we were at Tennessee Sunshine House.

34:45SPEAKER- Oh, I see. - Tennessee Pride.

34:46SPEAKER- Jimmy Dean not good enough for you?

34:48SPEAKER- I don't, Jimmy Dean's too salty for me, man.

34:51SPEAKER- It's pretty salty.

34:52SPEAKER- The Jimmy Dean organic that they do now,

34:55SPEAKERorganic sage is actually quite good and not too much.

34:58SPEAKERAlso, one of my dad's best friends made sausage every year

35:02SPEAKERand that's usually what we ate.

35:03SPEAKER- Okay.

35:04SPEAKER- 'Cause we would buy like 10, 15 pounds of that

35:05SPEAKERand that would last a year, a year and a half.

35:07SPEAKER- That's- - Give way to friends.

35:08SPEAKER- That's hard to argue with.

35:09SPEAKERDid you have to freeze that?

35:10SPEAKERThat doesn't keep you- - Yeah, you freeze it.

35:11SPEAKERBut it freezes fine.

35:14SPEAKER- Okay. - Like indistinguishable

35:16SPEAKERfrom not, we would break it into like half pound chunks

35:19SPEAKERand freeze it usually.

35:19SPEAKER- Sure, sure.

35:23SPEAKER- I make this, I make a black eyed peas and collards thing

35:27SPEAKERthat I came up with myself that I'll post the recipe for

35:31SPEAKERon Shitty Blog at some point.

35:33SPEAKER- That sounds good.

35:33SPEAKER- I meant to do it before the New Year's

35:34SPEAKERand then instead of doing that on the day before New Year's,

35:38SPEAKERI was bracing for storms.

35:40SPEAKER- Yes, you know what I made over the break

35:43SPEAKERthat was pretty good was a top sirloin on the stove top

35:46SPEAKERand a pan seared and it was like,

35:49SPEAKERwe have these steaks from Omaha Steaks in the freezer

35:52SPEAKERthat have been in there for too long

35:53SPEAKERand we should probably eat those.

35:55SPEAKER- Ooh.

35:55SPEAKER- Also, we can't grill here anymore

35:57SPEAKERbecause the landlord disallowed it.

35:59SPEAKER- Inside?

36:01SPEAKER- No, no, outside.

36:01SPEAKERLike I have a Webber- - Oh, you have a backyard.

36:03SPEAKEROkay. - I have a Webber

36:04SPEAKERthat we used to use on our back porch

36:06SPEAKERuntil he emailed about city statute or something.

36:09SPEAKERIt was like no open flame

36:11SPEAKERwithin 10 feet of wooden construction, anyway.

36:16SPEAKER- So you just take it out in the middle of the street

36:17SPEAKERis the way you do that and roll it out the front.

36:19SPEAKER- It's down in the garage.

36:20SPEAKERI have genuinely thought about rolling it out

36:22SPEAKERonto the sidewalk and using it.

36:23SPEAKERBut anyway, I looked at those steaks

36:26SPEAKERand then I went to a webpage

36:29SPEAKERand they said, here's how you sear a top sirloin

36:31SPEAKERon the stove top and I did it.

36:33SPEAKER- Yeah.

36:33SPEAKER- And it came out perfect.

36:35SPEAKERAnd I was like, man, what if we cooked more meat?

36:38SPEAKERThat was easy.

36:40SPEAKER- You can do, we did a prime rib.

36:42SPEAKER- Oh, that's the cream.

36:45SPEAKER- At Christmas and I just did it like basically

36:47SPEAKERas low as the oven would go for six hours

36:51SPEAKERand then cranked it up right at the very end

36:54SPEAKERfor like 15 minutes at 500.

36:57SPEAKER- I saw that picture you posted, it looked pretty good.

37:00SPEAKERMy girlfriend pulled up chef John's prime rib technique

37:04SPEAKERand I was staring at that YouTube video very hard thinking,

37:08SPEAKERmaybe we should make some prime ribs sometime.

37:10SPEAKER- We did, I followed the Kenji recipe

37:12SPEAKERand cut the salt down a little bit

37:13SPEAKER'cause he's a little saltier than I like usually.

37:15SPEAKERBut yeah, it was real easy.

37:18SPEAKER- I was tasked with pan searing some salmon the other night

37:22SPEAKERand I was like, after my top sirloin success,

37:24SPEAKERI was like, oh man, what if I just go pull up another thing

37:26SPEAKERand read about it and then do it?

37:27SPEAKERAnd Kenji's article on salmon was the one I hit

37:31SPEAKERand I was like, oh my God, I have entered the deep end here.

37:35SPEAKER- Did you press it down?

37:37SPEAKER- I didn't get that far.

37:39SPEAKER- Oh, oh, I'm gonna go tell you,

37:41SPEAKERwhen I was sick and couldn't eat it,

37:42SPEAKERthat was the only fat I could eat last year.

37:46SPEAKERI ate a lot of salmon, I did it with the Kenji thing

37:48SPEAKERand you can get the skin so crispy and delicious.

37:51SPEAKER- Oh, I believe it.

37:53SPEAKERBut after I was about halfway through

37:56SPEAKERhand wringing my way through that article,

37:59SPEAKERI was relieved of my task.

38:02SPEAKEREnded up not having to cook the salmon.

38:05SPEAKERI think I got about to the point

38:07SPEAKERwhere he was talking about like,

38:08SPEAKERoh, don't do this and this,

38:09SPEAKERor albumen will start coming out of the salmon or something.

38:12SPEAKER- You can't make it too hot, yeah.

38:13SPEAKER- I don't know what that is, this is too much.

38:15SPEAKER- Albumen is just fat connective tissues.

38:18SPEAKERIt breaks down and it bubbles up.

38:20SPEAKERIt's the little white dots that bubble up

38:21SPEAKERon top of your salmon if you overcook it too much.

38:23SPEAKER- Yes, real quick, the other recipe I was gonna mention

38:26SPEAKERis my grandma's butterscotch crunchies,

38:29SPEAKERwhich the recipe my mom gave me

38:31SPEAKERsaid some people call them haystacks.

38:33SPEAKERDoes that ring any bells?

38:34SPEAKER- No, I've never had those.

38:35SPEAKER- We call them butterscotch crunchies.

38:37SPEAKERIt is quite literally butterscotch chips,

38:39SPEAKERchamois noodles and peanuts.

38:41SPEAKER- Wow, I've never even heard of that.

38:42SPEAKERI was expecting something like a pecan sandy or something.

38:44SPEAKER- No, no, no, you literally just melt

38:46SPEAKERthe butterscotch chips in the microwave,

38:49SPEAKERcoat the peanuts and the chamois noodles,

38:51SPEAKERdrop it on wax paper, let it cool, that's it.

38:53SPEAKER- That sounds fabulous.

38:54SPEAKER- It's quite good.

38:56SPEAKER- We did a lot of no-bake cookies when I was a kid,

38:58SPEAKERbut I wouldn't call them those recipes, family heirlooms.

39:02SPEAKERI do, somebody had requested a popcorn guide

39:06SPEAKERon the Shitty Blog at some point,

39:07SPEAKERwhich I will do with the Whirly Pop,

39:08SPEAKER'cause Whirly Pops are awesome.

39:10SPEAKERIf you like popcorn, you should get a Whirly Pop.

39:12SPEAKERThat's my advice.

39:14SPEAKER- All right, that's a tasty sandwich, has a question.

39:17SPEAKERHow likely is Apple to phase out charging ports altogether

39:21SPEAKERover the next few years?

39:22SPEAKERCan they?

39:25SPEAKERI have no basis for this.

39:26SPEAKERMy immediate assumption is there's probably

39:27SPEAKERsome EU regulation that would prevent them

39:30SPEAKERfrom shipping a phone without a port on it.

39:32SPEAKER- I don't think so.

39:33SPEAKER- No?

39:34SPEAKER- No, I think they can ship whatever they want

39:35SPEAKERas long as they provide the charger.

39:39SPEAKERThat's interesting.

39:40SPEAKERThey are moving to USB-C, right?

39:41SPEAKERDidn't that finally happen?

39:43SPEAKER- Well, it's in the iPads.

39:44SPEAKERI think, my understanding is that they have to move to USB-C,

39:47SPEAKERbut I also thought that like five years ago

39:49SPEAKERand they just kept shipping adapters.

39:52SPEAKERSo I don't know.

39:56SPEAKERPeople use USB on iPhones to get footage off still,

40:00SPEAKER'cause like if you're transferring 4K raw video,

40:05SPEAKERwhich some maniacs shoot on iPhones,

40:07SPEAKERit's pretty substantial to pull off over wifi.

40:10SPEAKERBut even the wifi is fast, pretty fast.

40:12SPEAKERLike if you have AX now, it's pretty, or wifi is six,

40:14SPEAKERwhatever, it's pretty fast now.

40:16SPEAKERI can see a world where there's no ports on iPhones for sure.

40:20SPEAKER- So I've wondered about that, but hmm.

40:23SPEAKER- I mean, I saw the other day that the MagSafe part

40:27SPEAKERof the key charger, 'cause like the modern

40:31SPEAKERiPhone MagSafe chargers are just a key charger

40:34SPEAKERwith a QI charger key charger with a key magnetic latch.

40:40SPEAKERThat holds the phone to the charger

40:42SPEAKERin the right orientation and position.

40:45SPEAKERSo I like, and that's gonna be part of the next version

40:48SPEAKERof the key spec.

40:49SPEAKERSo all of the key chargers will be MagSafe in the future.

40:52SPEAKER- That's cool.

40:53SPEAKER- Which also means that there'll be cross-platform

40:55SPEAKERand it's kind of a standard at that point, right?

40:56SPEAKER- Yeah, that's, hmm, okay, when you put it that way,

40:59SPEAKERsure, I could maybe see, like what's the progression?

41:02SPEAKERFirst, the headphone jack went and then all the ports

41:06SPEAKERhad to be USB-C and then all the ports just disappeared.

41:09SPEAKER- Yeah, like it seems like a lot of the decisions

41:12SPEAKERApple makes on what they support on the phones

41:14SPEAKERis based on support problems with it.

41:16SPEAKERAnd I can see, like the number of times

41:19SPEAKERI've had to go to the, like go to the shop

41:22SPEAKERand get the air compressor out and blast it

41:25SPEAKERin the phone hole 'cause there's lint jammed in there.

41:29SPEAKERHere's the thing that's actually gonna stop it

41:31SPEAKERwhen I think about it is the legacy stuff.

41:32SPEAKERLike wireless carplay is relatively new.

41:36SPEAKERSo not having a port would prevent you

41:39SPEAKERfrom plugging into your car, which is gonna be

41:42SPEAKERprobably the thing that keeps ports on the phones

41:44SPEAKERfor the next 10 years.

41:45SPEAKER- Yeah, that makes sense.

41:46SPEAKERReal quick, I did just find the story from late October.

41:50SPEAKERThis is on The Guardian.

41:51SPEAKERApple will ditch the Lightning connector on its iPhones,

41:53SPEAKERthe company has confirmed, after European regulators

41:56SPEAKERdecided all smartphones should have USB charging

41:59SPEAKERas standard in two years time.

42:01SPEAKERSo this will be?

42:03SPEAKER- 2025?

42:04SPEAKER- 2024, all phones after autumn 2024

42:08SPEAKERin the EU must use USB-C.

42:10SPEAKER- I wonder if that's new introduced models

42:12SPEAKERor if that's anything that ships after that.

42:14SPEAKER- Oh, good question.

42:16SPEAKER- I bet it's new models introduced after.

42:18SPEAKER- Yeah, that's probably the case.

42:20SPEAKERAlso, is there any world where you see them shipping

42:24SPEAKERlike a European model with USB-C and Lightning

42:26SPEAKEReverywhere else or they just make that change globally?

42:28SPEAKER- Global change.

42:29SPEAKER- Yeah.

42:30SPEAKER- It's too big a market to make.

42:31SPEAKERLike, it's not like the port, the amount of board space

42:37SPEAKERand the physical connector overhead is different

42:39SPEAKERand Apple won't do something janky like have a USB,

42:44SPEAKERhave a Lightning, like have different connectors

42:47SPEAKERon the boards for Lightning with a sleeve that shoots in

42:50SPEAKERso there's more seams on it.

42:51SPEAKER- Right, right.

42:53SPEAKEROne whole design makes sense.

42:55SPEAKER- Yeah, good design only.

42:58SPEAKER- Question from Argils.

43:00SPEAKERI brought my Mr. home with me for the holidays

43:02SPEAKERand was showing my dad how cool it was

43:05SPEAKERthat I could recreate my old CRT TV as a kid

43:08SPEAKERwith visual filter options.

43:10SPEAKERHe became irate about this as I make it an annual tradition

43:13SPEAKERto disable motion smoothing on his TV.

43:17SPEAKERAre visual filters on the Mr. and emulators

43:20SPEAKERon the same level as motion smoothing?

43:23SPEAKERAbsolutely not, no.

43:25SPEAKERAnd the key differentiator is that I like CRT filters

43:29SPEAKERand I don't like motion smoothing so that's why.

43:31SPEAKER- I'm kind of with his dad on this one.

43:33SPEAKER- What?

43:34SPEAKER- I don't ever turn on the CRT filters.

43:36SPEAKERDo you really turn that shit on?

43:38SPEAKERIt looks so bad.

43:39SPEAKER- On the Mr.?

43:40SPEAKER- Yeah.

43:41SPEAKER- They've gotten, dude, have you used them lately?

43:42SPEAKERThey've gotten way better.

43:43SPEAKERThey've gotten tremendously better.

43:45SPEAKERLike they can, I shouldn't get into it.

43:47SPEAKERIt's a long explanation.

43:49SPEAKEROkay, let me put it this way.

43:51SPEAKERDoes the term shadow mask mean anything to you?

43:53SPEAKERHave you messed with them on the Mr.

43:54SPEAKERsince they introduced shadow masks?

43:55SPEAKER- No, I've not looked at them

43:56SPEAKERsince the shadow masking stuff turned on.

43:58SPEAKERYou were woefully out of date on that stuff.

44:00SPEAKER- Okay, my Mr. hasn't been updated

44:02SPEAKERin like probably four months at this point.

44:03SPEAKERI just, if I, yeah.

44:06SPEAKER- Shadow masks are like the, it's the, I don't,

44:09SPEAKERI think I lack the terminology to explain.

44:11SPEAKERIt's kind of the sub pixel layout.

44:14SPEAKERAnd I wish I, like I can throw out terms

44:19SPEAKERlike aperture grill, you know?

44:20SPEAKERLike the shadow mask like is determined by, for example,

44:23SPEAKERthe aperture grill that was used on Trinitron.

44:25SPEAKER- How far apart the screen is that separates the pixels

44:28SPEAKERon the phosphor, right?

44:30SPEAKER- Yes, it was in use on Trinitrons.

44:32SPEAKERLike it's, that's why the Trinitrons

44:34SPEAKERhad the two little wire.

44:36SPEAKER- Yeah, that was what's holding the grill in place.

44:37SPEAKER- Yes, yes.

44:38SPEAKERSo anyway, it's an attempt to recreate

44:41SPEAKERthe physical configuration of a lot of those old screens.

44:43SPEAKERAnyway, so it's got presets now.

44:45SPEAKERLike you can just hit a preset that's like,

44:47SPEAKERhey, make this look like the JVC from 1996

44:50SPEAKERand it'll apply like the appropriate shadow mask.

44:53SPEAKERAnd scan lines and all that stuff.

44:56SPEAKER- I want those smooth pixels, man.

44:58SPEAKERI want to just be able to see all my.

45:00SPEAKER- Those pixels aren't smooth, they're jagged.

45:02SPEAKER- I want to see some big square pixels

45:04SPEAKERwith no interference on them.

45:07SPEAKER- I have fully come around.

45:09SPEAKERI have been fully CRT pilled on.

45:12SPEAKERI fully come around on the idea that those graphics

45:14SPEAKERwere authored to be seen on a CRT

45:16SPEAKERwith all of the characteristics thereof

45:18SPEAKERand that you're not seeing the art in its intended form.

45:21SPEAKER- Look, if you play Sonic, you don't see the games

45:24SPEAKERthat was meant to be played on an LCD.

45:26SPEAKER- Like that, what is the Twitter account?

45:28SPEAKERCRT pixels, is that the name of it?

45:30SPEAKER- I don't know that one.

45:31SPEAKER- If you follow that one, I mean,

45:32SPEAKERthey make a pretty good case.

45:33SPEAKERThey put a lot of, yes, it is CRT pixels.

45:35SPEAKERThey post a lot of side-by-side of like,

45:37SPEAKERhere it is on a raw LCD.

45:39SPEAKERHere it is like photographed off of like a nice Sony PVM

45:42SPEAKERor whatever and like, you can kind of see it.

45:45SPEAKERLike you can, it's pretty obvious in a lot of cases,

45:48SPEAKERlike the detail that is lost.

45:50SPEAKER- Oh yeah, no doubt.

45:51SPEAKERLike the number of things that were designed

45:52SPEAKERto render on the screen for multiple frames

45:55SPEAKERand stuff like that is, or to linger on the screen

45:58SPEAKERfor multiple fades is the phosphor fades is high.

46:01SPEAKERI am--

46:02SPEAKER- There's a lot of like gradient stuff

46:03SPEAKERthat doesn't come across anyway.

46:04SPEAKERI don't need to go look at the Twitter account.

46:07SPEAKERYou'll see.

46:08SPEAKER- Oh, okay, okay.

46:09SPEAKERI need to update my, I think I need to declare Mr. Bankruptcy

46:11SPEAKERand start over.

46:12SPEAKER- Oh, what?

46:13SPEAKER- And yeah.

46:14SPEAKER- What do you mean?

46:15SPEAKER- Like I haven't updated it in a while and I feel like--

46:17SPEAKER- You could just wipe it at this point and start over.

46:20SPEAKER- Yeah, like all my ROMs are saved on the NAS.

46:22SPEAKERSo I just remount them, remount it.

46:24SPEAKERAnd I don't know.

46:25SPEAKERI feel like I've made mistakes.

46:27SPEAKERIt's part of it is I haven't spent enough time

46:28SPEAKERwith it lately.

46:29SPEAKER- That's just always new stuff happening.

46:32SPEAKER- Yeah, I know, I know it's too much stuff.

46:34SPEAKER- All right, well, here's a good transition from Wilhouse,

46:37SPEAKERwhich is the better boot up sequence,

46:39SPEAKERWindows 95 or PlayStation One.

46:41SPEAKER- Is the PlayStation One the doodle doodle doodle doodle?

46:43SPEAKERI don't have a PlayStation One.

46:45SPEAKER- No, the PlayStation One is the

46:47SPEAKER(mimics music)

46:52SPEAKER- No, it doesn't do anything for me.

46:54SPEAKER- We're gonna have to cut that out.

46:56SPEAKER- No, I want, well, I mean, we could do the thing.

46:58SPEAKERI've been listening to Austin's podcast about And/or lately

47:02SPEAKERand he does this thing where he cuts in the thing

47:04SPEAKERthat they're talking about instead of--

47:06SPEAKER- We could do that.

47:07SPEAKER- We could do that.

47:07SPEAKERWe have the ability, there's no man in podcast land.

47:11SPEAKERThere's nobody, the DMCA people aren't gonna come

47:13SPEAKERshut us down.

47:14SPEAKERWe can do whatever the hell we want.

47:15SPEAKER- It's true, it's true.

47:17SPEAKER- I could put the first five minutes of painted black

47:20SPEAKERin here and nobody's gonna stop me.

47:22SPEAKERSo I don't have any memory at all of the Sony one

47:24SPEAKER'cause I didn't have a PlayStation.

47:25SPEAKER- Okay.

47:26SPEAKER- But I would put the GameCube one in here as my god tier.

47:30SPEAKER- Oh, that's what we should have done.

47:32SPEAKERRanking of console boot up sequences

47:34SPEAKERis something that needs to be done.

47:36SPEAKER- We just put it on the list.

47:37SPEAKER- Oh man, I fucking love console boot ups,

47:40SPEAKERwhich kind of don't exist anymore,

47:42SPEAKERwhich is really sad to me.

47:43SPEAKER- Can we just do ranking of computer sounds?

47:46SPEAKER- Well, that's been on the docket for a very long time.

47:48SPEAKER- But like Windows, Windows starting sounds,

47:51SPEAKERwe got modem sounds, we got--

47:54SPEAKER- I humbly suggest that we complete a whole bunch

47:56SPEAKERof other ranking projects

47:58SPEAKERbefore we complete the ranking of software.

48:00SPEAKER- Let's just keep adding more ranking projects

48:03SPEAKERthat are impossible to complete.

48:05SPEAKER- I think the console boot up ranking

48:06SPEAKERwould have to be done on video.

48:09SPEAKERI think there's too much of a visual component there.

48:10SPEAKERAnyway.

48:11SPEAKER- Oh, okay, yeah, that's fair.

48:12SPEAKER- Windows 95 doesn't really have a boot up sequence,

48:14SPEAKERdoes it?

48:14SPEAKER- Yeah, it has a sound.

48:15SPEAKER- It has a sound.

48:16SPEAKER- It has the Brian Eno sound, it's a good sound.

48:17SPEAKER- But that's all it has, like that,

48:19SPEAKERI mean, it's got that low res static Windows 95 on clouds.

48:23SPEAKER- It's not static, the little bottom bar moves.

48:25SPEAKER- The little bottom bar does sort of throb as it loads.

48:29SPEAKERI mean, the Brian Eno sound is pretty good, but--

48:33SPEAKER- It's too long though, if I'm being critical,

48:35SPEAKERit's beautiful, I love it, it goes too long.

48:37SPEAKER- I gotta give it up for the PlayStation boot up here,

48:41SPEAKERwhich also, this will mean nothing to you,

48:43SPEAKERand this has been known for a while,

48:44SPEAKERbut it's been making the rounds again recently

48:46SPEAKERthat the PS logo, you know the classic PlayStation logo?

48:49SPEAKER- Yeah.

48:50SPEAKER- At the PS1 boot up is an actual 3D model.

48:53SPEAKER- What?

48:54SPEAKER- You can't tell looking at the boot up,

48:56SPEAKERbut people would have dug into the ROM,

48:59SPEAKERthe bios of that thing, like that logo is a 3D model

49:02SPEAKERthat you can actually spin around and stuff, that's neat.

49:05SPEAKER- I'm listening to this now for the first time maybe.

49:07SPEAKER- Ever?

49:08SPEAKER- I've literally never heard this before.

49:10SPEAKER- Impossible.

49:11SPEAKERAre you watching it as well?

49:12SPEAKER- I'm watching it on YouTube.

49:15SPEAKER- Okay.

49:16SPEAKER- It's okay.

49:18SPEAKERIt does have a nice surround component to it.

49:22SPEAKER- Okay, I might suggest that you lack the proper nostalgia

49:26SPEAKERor historical context.

49:29SPEAKER- This is a post on YouTube by QuarterPounder31,

49:32SPEAKERthe description of it just says,

49:35SPEAKER"You will shit bricks with an X."

49:38SPEAKERAnd then you can, yeah, that's it.

49:40SPEAKER- Oh, it kind of had that effect, sure.

49:42SPEAKER- Yeah, I like the GameCube one.

49:44SPEAKER- GameCube, look, GameCube.

49:46SPEAKER- It animates, it rolls out the G, it's real good.

49:49SPEAKER- Dude, that GameCube boot up is an all-timer.

49:51SPEAKERIt is, I might say without due consideration,

49:55SPEAKERthis was risky, I might say it's a contender for number one.

49:59SPEAKER- I can't- - Maybe.

50:00SPEAKER- I don't remember the Xbox One,

50:02SPEAKERwhich probably means that like-

50:03SPEAKER- Original Xbox?

50:04SPEAKER- Yeah, the original Xbox One.

50:05SPEAKER- Original Xbox is like-

50:07SPEAKER- It's the black screen with the green,

50:09SPEAKERlook, we are burning a pod here.

50:11SPEAKERWe gotta be careful with this,

50:12SPEAKERwe're flying too close to the sun.

50:14SPEAKER- The original Xbox boot up is that picture of the rock

50:17SPEAKERwith a fanny pack on in console boot up form.

50:21SPEAKERLike that's what that is.

50:23SPEAKERIt is early '90s Microsoft cheese in the extreme.

50:28SPEAKERIt's like there's a nuclear reactor inside your Xbox,

50:32SPEAKERis what that looks like.

50:34SPEAKER- Yeah, the 360 one's pretty good though.

50:36SPEAKERDreamcast is also real good.

50:37SPEAKER- There were two of them, the 360 had two of them,

50:39SPEAKERthey changed it mid-generation.

50:41SPEAKER- Oh, really? - Actually.

50:43SPEAKER- I guess I don't remember that,

50:44SPEAKERwas it when they did the blades?

50:46SPEAKERCover the blades?

50:46SPEAKER- It might've been around the time that they switched.

50:49SPEAKERThey're quite similar, but there is a difference.

50:53SPEAKERAlso the GameCube might win just purely on account

50:57SPEAKERof it being interactive.

50:58SPEAKER- Right, 'cause you can roll it around, right?

51:00SPEAKER- Not only can you roll it around at the time of boot,

51:02SPEAKERbut you can hold buttons down and get different sounds.

51:04SPEAKER- What?

51:05SPEAKER- Holy shit, you didn't know this?

51:07SPEAKER- What?

51:08SPEAKER- Oh my God.

51:09SPEAKER- Oh my God.

51:10SPEAKER- Go get your GameCube.

51:11SPEAKER- I'm gonna get my GameCube out of the garage,

51:11SPEAKERI'll be right back.

51:12SPEAKER- Go get your GameCube.

51:13SPEAKERThere's at least one alternate version

51:14SPEAKERof the sounds you can get.

51:16SPEAKER- I remember, like I remember,

51:17SPEAKERman Nintendo used to do stuff like that all,

51:19SPEAKERlike I remember the first time I realized

51:20SPEAKERyou could manipulate the Mario face on Mario 64

51:24SPEAKERwith the second controller.

51:25SPEAKER- I, man.

51:26SPEAKER- Yeah, anyway.

51:27SPEAKER- The loss of personality in some of Nintendo's like,

51:30SPEAKERnot the games, but the...

51:32SPEAKER- Like the stuff around the games,

51:34SPEAKERlike where's the cat?

51:35SPEAKERLike remember the Wii Shop theme?

51:38SPEAKERStreet pass.

51:39SPEAKER- That's good music.

51:40SPEAKER- Like that GameCube boot up,

51:41SPEAKERyou're like, you name it.

51:42SPEAKERLike there used to be so much cool little personality

51:44SPEAKERaround the edges of their products that I feel like is,

51:47SPEAKERthey've gotten much more business-like.

51:48SPEAKER- Well yeah, but like where's the cat on the 3DS

51:51SPEAKERthat was just walking around the 3DS menus, right?

51:53SPEAKER- Yes.

51:54SPEAKER- Or maybe it was the DS menus, I can't remember,

51:56SPEAKERbut yeah, anyway, good stuff.

51:58SPEAKER- Yes.

51:59SPEAKER- Man, I can't wait to do that.

52:00SPEAKERWe should do that episode next.

52:01SPEAKER2023 is the year of rankings.

52:02SPEAKERWe just do a different ranking of every week.

52:05SPEAKER- I'm sorry, I apologize.

52:06SPEAKER- I don't know if I can endorse,

52:07SPEAKERon behalf of the community,

52:08SPEAKERI don't know if I can endorse that idea.

52:10SPEAKER- I can feel people leaving already.

52:13SPEAKER- Okay, question from XAmpRocky.

52:16SPEAKERWhen do you think we'll see prosumer M2 SSD NASes?

52:19SPEAKERActually, I'm sorry, let me interrupt the question.

52:20SPEAKERDo you say M2 or M.2?

52:23SPEAKER- I haven't ever thought about it before.

52:24SPEAKERI think I say M2.

52:25SPEAKER- Okay, I go back and forth.

52:28SPEAKERI'm gonna, I think I'm gonna side with M2

52:29SPEAKER'cause it's one less syllable.

52:31SPEAKER- Uh-huh.

52:32SPEAKER- Okay, all right, back to the question.

52:34SPEAKERWhen do you think we'll see prosumer M2 SSD NASes?

52:37SPEAKERDo you think it would meaningfully make a difference?

52:39SPEAKERWhat do you think it would look like?

52:41SPEAKERImagine a toaster where you insert the M2's

52:43SPEAKERlike pieces of bread.

52:45SPEAKER- Well, I'm excited by that, yeah.

52:48SPEAKER- Form factor of the drives aside,

52:49SPEAKERI have been like low key obsessed

52:51SPEAKERwith the idea of an SSD only NAS for a very long time.

52:55SPEAKER- It's doable if you don't have a lot of media right now.

52:57SPEAKERThe two terabyte SSDs are not expensive.

52:59SPEAKER- Yes, you absolutely could.

53:00SPEAKERYou could do it now if you wanted to.

53:02SPEAKERAnd even in like a regular PC,

53:03SPEAKERyou can get like, you can get like PCIe cards

53:05SPEAKERthat have four M2 slots on them and things like that.

53:08SPEAKERSo you could load it up pretty well.

53:10SPEAKERBut the biggest problem is that price per terabyte

53:14SPEAKERis just never going to, well, I shouldn't say never,

53:17SPEAKERbut it's hard to see SSD price per terabyte

53:20SPEAKERoutpacing that of hard drives anytime in the next decade.

53:23SPEAKER- It's never going to, but if like,

53:25SPEAKERbut the situation is if you care more about bulk,

53:28SPEAKERlike if you care more about bulk storage

53:30SPEAKERand price per gigabyte,

53:31SPEAKERthen the spinning disks are always going to be better, right?

53:34SPEAKERBut if you want something that's lower,

53:37SPEAKERmy guess is that the M2s,

53:39SPEAKERassuming you're not doing a ton of writes

53:40SPEAKERare going to last a really long time

53:42SPEAKERcompared to the spinning disks.

53:44SPEAKER- Definitely, definitely.

53:46SPEAKER- So like, if I, it's entirely possible that my next NAS

53:50SPEAKERafter this analogy dies 10 years from now

53:53SPEAKERwill be something that has a handful of disks

53:58SPEAKERand then a handful of SSDs

54:01SPEAKERso that the stuff that runs constantly,

54:03SPEAKERlike the low value bulk data of the video,

54:07SPEAKERthe video, the Plex library is on the spinning disks

54:11SPEAKERand all of the other stuff

54:12SPEAKERthat's more important in performance matters

54:15SPEAKERis on a couple of SSDs, I can see that.

54:17SPEAKER- Actually, just to focus down

54:19SPEAKERon her specific question a little bit more,

54:20SPEAKERI actually totally could see somebody like Synology

54:22SPEAKERcoming out with something like she's describing

54:24SPEAKER'cause imagine how small it would be

54:27SPEAKERif those were the only types of drives

54:28SPEAKERit had to accommodate.

54:29SPEAKER- Well, my Synology has an SSD slot already,

54:31SPEAKERbut it's a cache, it's for cache.

54:33SPEAKER- Right.

54:34SPEAKER- So you put like 128 gig SSD in it.

54:35SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

54:36SPEAKER- It makes it a little faster.

54:36SPEAKER- I'm talking something that would have nothing

54:37SPEAKERbut those drives.

54:38SPEAKER- Yeah.

54:39SPEAKER- That could be absolutely tiny.

54:40SPEAKERLike that could be the size of a router.

54:42SPEAKER- It's like slightly bigger than a Raspberry Pi.

54:44SPEAKER- Yeah, right.

54:45SPEAKER- Cooling, you still have to cool the fast SSDs,

54:47SPEAKERyou still have to put a fair amount of cooling on.

54:48SPEAKER- Yes, for sure, for sure.

54:50SPEAKERAnd I had the conventional wisdom had been that like SSDs

54:54SPEAKERwere not as good for data retention

54:55SPEAKERbecause there is the possibility

54:56SPEAKERthat if they're powered off for too long,

54:58SPEAKERthey can lose data, but I was looking into that recently

55:01SPEAKERand that seems to be somewhat apocryphal

55:02SPEAKERthat like the most recent figures from manufacturers

55:05SPEAKERI've seen have said that like an SSD

55:08SPEAKERwould have to be powered off for like five to 10 years

55:10SPEAKERbefore you'd have to worry about it.

55:11SPEAKER- Yeah.

55:12SPEAKER- Losing data, so that's kind of not a big deal.

55:14SPEAKER- Well, and if it's in a NAS that's being actively used,

55:17SPEAKERit's not gonna be powered off.

55:19SPEAKER- That's the other thing is that if your NAS

55:21SPEAKERhas been unpowered for five years,

55:24SPEAKERwe've probably got way bigger problems

55:25SPEAKERthan worrying about data retention.

55:28SPEAKER- Yep.

55:30SPEAKER- We'll see.

55:31SPEAKER- That's a really good question.

55:32SPEAKERI mean, I would love to see a toaster NAS.

55:37SPEAKER- All right.

55:38SPEAKER- Can we do one more maybe?

55:39SPEAKERMaybe two?

55:40SPEAKER- Yeah, two, I got a couple more here.

55:42SPEAKERFrom NAS toasters to flying toasters.

55:46SPEAKERI'm just gonna pause and let you.

55:48SPEAKER- They weren't, the flying toasters was a Mac screen saver.

55:50SPEAKERIt was really hard to get that on the PC

55:52SPEAKERand the ones that came out on the PC

55:54SPEAKERwere kind of janky and crap compared to the Mac one.

55:57SPEAKER- I was trying to pause and let you bask

55:58SPEAKERin the majesty of my segue.

56:00SPEAKER- It was a pretty good segue.

56:01SPEAKER- But anyway, Millhouse Phoenix,

56:05SPEAKERwhat was your favorite Windows screen saver

56:07SPEAKERfrom the pre XP era?

56:08SPEAKERWere you big fans of the pipes?

56:10SPEAKERDid you constantly try to pick which way the maze would turn

56:12SPEAKERor did you sit in front of your PC

56:13SPEAKERand pretend to be on the enterprise D

56:15SPEAKERas it traversed the galaxy, stars gliding past?

56:18SPEAKERMy personal favorite was the flying toasters.

56:21SPEAKERMillhouse Phoenix is classifying the flying toasters

56:25SPEAKERas a Windows screen saver.

56:26SPEAKERI'm just gonna point out here.

56:28SPEAKER- I was always jealous of the flying toasters

56:30SPEAKERand spent an embarrassing amount of time

56:34SPEAKERtrying to get the flying toasters to work.

56:35SPEAKER- Flying toasters were like

56:36SPEAKERkind of a low key cultural institution, right?

56:39SPEAKERLike, I feel like that was something

56:41SPEAKERa lot of people who weren't even big into computers

56:43SPEAKERback then knew the flying toasters.

56:45SPEAKER- Yeah, it was part of After Effects or not.

56:49SPEAKER- After Dark.

56:50SPEAKER- After Dark, yeah.

56:51SPEAKER- After Dark from Berkeley Systems,

56:52SPEAKERwhich I was never clear exactly what all was in that package.

56:56SPEAKER- Oh, that came out in '91 for Windows.

56:58SPEAKER'89 for Mac and '91 for Windows.

57:00SPEAKER- '91, but the version that everybody, the good version,

57:04SPEAKERso that one had kind of janky 16.

57:09SPEAKERThe Windows version, the pixel art was lower bit depth

57:12SPEAKERand it didn't ever look as good, I thought.

57:15SPEAKER- Fair.

57:15SPEAKER- The one I loved was the virtual fish tank.

57:18SPEAKERThat wasn't a default Windows one,

57:20SPEAKERbut you could get a cool virtual aquarium

57:21SPEAKERthat you could, look, it was,

57:23SPEAKERthey had microtransactions and that thing in like 1995.

57:25SPEAKERYou could buy more fish as they made more fish for it.

57:28SPEAKER- Nice.

57:30SPEAKER- I also liked the one that would just put words.

57:34SPEAKERSo like by default, it was either the time

57:37SPEAKERor the name of the computer, I think,

57:39SPEAKERbut you put whatever words you wanted in there

57:40SPEAKERand you could make it a 3D extruded text

57:42SPEAKERthat would spin around and fly around the screen.

57:45SPEAKER- Yes, honorable mention to when OpenGL screensavers

57:48SPEAKERstarted coming about that used your graphics card.

57:50SPEAKER- Yeah, that was pretty cool, the 3D pipes

57:52SPEAKERand all that stuff, but it is star field simulation

57:56SPEAKERall the way for me.

57:57SPEAKER- I did that one for a long time.

57:59SPEAKER- That was my preferred, that's the stars flying past

58:03SPEAKERthat they were talking about,

58:05SPEAKERbut they're basically just white dots,

58:06SPEAKERliterally just white dots flying at you

58:08SPEAKERon a black background.

58:10SPEAKERBut I found if you put your face right up on the monitor

58:14SPEAKERand then pulled backwards,

58:17SPEAKERit kind of made the stars stretch out

58:18SPEAKERas if you were going into warp.

58:20SPEAKER- Wow, wow.

58:23SPEAKERI think Dream Aquarium is still around.

58:26SPEAKERIt looks like that's what I used to use.

58:27SPEAKER- I tried to go down a screensaver rabbit hole

58:31SPEAKERlike a year ago.

58:32SPEAKERI was just like, man, like graphics cards

58:34SPEAKERhave gotten so good and APIs and everything.

58:36SPEAKERLike I bet the screensaver scene is amazing now.

58:39SPEAKERAnd instead I found that they kind of don't exist anymore.

58:42SPEAKER- Yeah, it turns out kind of wasteful, who knew?

58:45SPEAKER- You can't find a lot of new screensavers these days.

58:49SPEAKER- All right, last question.

58:52SPEAKERI'm just gonna say this.

58:54SPEAKERThis might be the most amazing question we've ever gotten.

58:56SPEAKER- Wow.

58:57SPEAKER- From console command.

59:00SPEAKERSee what you have to say about this.

59:02SPEAKERPlease humor me for a bit.

59:04SPEAKERI've got a little 500 gram coffee roaster

59:06SPEAKERand I've always wanted to drop a gram of weed into it

59:09SPEAKERjust before the second crack

59:11SPEAKERwhen the roast starts transitioning

59:12SPEAKERfrom a full city roast to dark.

59:15SPEAKERThe beans begin to sweat oils

59:17SPEAKERand I bet if I drop a full bud in there,

59:19SPEAKERit'll roll around smoldering

59:20SPEAKERand wash the beans in hyphy cush smoke.

59:24SPEAKER- Wow. - I thought about it

59:26SPEAKERand a bud should be the way to go

59:28SPEAKERfor slow release and less ash.

59:31SPEAKERBut dropping it in crushed up would flash the roast in smoke

59:34SPEAKERand it is a tight window before it's too dark.

59:36SPEAKERSo that's not terrible either.

59:38SPEAKERWe're at about 230 Celsius at that point.

59:42SPEAKERDo you think drinking that coffee would get you high

59:44SPEAKERor just smoke out the neighbors?

59:47SPEAKER- I don't think, I don't think that's hot enough

59:50SPEAKERto get the stuff from the weed into the air.

59:54SPEAKER- To combust it?

59:55SPEAKER- Yeah, 'cause like the, my, look, okay.

59:59SPEAKERContent warning, we live in California

1:00:02SPEAKERwhere everything's nice and legal.

1:00:05SPEAKER380 Celsius is what my vape is set to for a leaf.

1:00:09SPEAKER- Interesting.

1:00:10SPEAKER- So, or maybe 380 Fahrenheit.

1:00:13SPEAKERI don't actually, I haven't actually paid attention.

1:00:15SPEAKER- Yeah, I bet you haven't.

1:00:17SPEAKER- Look, I just set the number

1:00:18SPEAKERand then I don't think about it anymore.

1:00:20SPEAKER- I'm joking. - Hold on, let's see.

1:00:22SPEAKERI was charging last night, 380 Fahrenheit.

1:00:24SPEAKEROkay, so what's 380 Fahrenheit in Celsius?

1:00:28SPEAKER- I don't know, let's ask a Google.

1:00:29SPEAKER- That's maybe a little hot too.

1:00:30SPEAKERI don't want, don't judge me.

1:00:32SPEAKER- 193 Celsius is what that is.

1:00:34SPEAKER- Oh yeah, no, so they're right in the sweet spot there.

1:00:36SPEAKERLet it rip, man.

1:00:37SPEAKERI have no idea, I'm really curious.

1:00:38SPEAKERYou should try this experiment and let us know,

1:00:40SPEAKERbut also don't dark roast your coffee, man.

1:00:42SPEAKERLight roast all the way.

1:00:44SPEAKERThat's where my critique comes in.

1:00:45SPEAKERWhat is your reasoning for that?

1:00:48SPEAKER- Light roast, you get better flavor out of the coffee.

1:00:50SPEAKERAll dark roasted.

1:00:50SPEAKERLike if you get good beans, then you dark roast it,

1:00:53SPEAKERyou might as well not get good beans is my theory.

1:00:55SPEAKER- Yikes, okay.

1:00:56SPEAKER- Well, 'cause like you lose all the nuance and flavor

1:00:58SPEAKERwhen you go to the city roast, it's too dark.

1:01:02SPEAKER- Fair.

1:01:03SPEAKER- Like you can take your shitty coffee

1:01:05SPEAKERfrom like Southeast Asia

1:01:06SPEAKERthat's gotten all the bad washing and all that stuff

1:01:09SPEAKERand you get the same flavor as you get out of nice Colombian

1:01:11SPEAKERor Ethiopian or something.

1:01:13SPEAKER- Fair, fair.

1:01:14SPEAKER- I had given up dark roast just because I found out

1:01:17SPEAKERthat light roast has more caffeine.

1:01:19SPEAKER- Well, and less acid too usually.

1:01:21SPEAKER- Yes, yes.

1:01:22SPEAKERYou know, maybe report back,

1:01:24SPEAKERmaybe experiment and report back.

1:01:26SPEAKER- This is, look, I don't wanna call you a thought leader

1:01:28SPEAKERhere, but I'm gonna say there's a long history

1:01:32SPEAKERof people putting stimulants and depressants together

1:01:34SPEAKERand having massive success and then getting in big trouble

1:01:36SPEAKERand having to stop.

1:01:37SPEAKERSo be careful and good luck.

1:01:40SPEAKER- Yes.

1:01:40SPEAKER- Don't die.

1:01:41SPEAKER- Roaster beware, we are making no endorsements here.

1:01:45SPEAKER- Yeah.

1:01:46SPEAKER- But hey, maybe let us know.

1:01:48SPEAKER- Don't use cannabinoids if you're in a state

1:01:50SPEAKERthat doesn't allow that also.

1:01:54SPEAKER- All right.

1:01:55SPEAKER- I think that's as good a place as any to wrap this up.

1:01:58SPEAKER- There's nowhere else to go from there.

1:01:59SPEAKER- Yeah, but like next week we're gonna rank everything.

1:02:02SPEAKERWe're just ranking, it's the year of rankings starts now.

1:02:05SPEAKER- Honestly, we could rank the questions we got this month.

1:02:07SPEAKERI don't know what happened, but we got so many,

1:02:09SPEAKERlike we, I'm kind of bummed 'cause I'm sitting here

1:02:12SPEAKERlooking at other questions I flagged

1:02:13SPEAKERthat we didn't get to read.

1:02:14SPEAKERLike there are so many good ones

1:02:15SPEAKERwe could just do another Q&A next week.

1:02:17SPEAKER- Yeah, we got a lot of good.

1:02:19SPEAKERLook, if we ever have infinite time,

1:02:21SPEAKERwe can just do a separate Q&A podcast every week

1:02:23SPEAKERin addition to the regular podcasts.

1:02:25SPEAKER- Yeah, infinite time sounds good.

1:02:27SPEAKER- Time sounds nice.

1:02:28SPEAKER- Apologies to anyone whose question doesn't get read

1:02:30SPEAKER'cause there are a lot of good ones.

1:02:31SPEAKER- Yeah, and if we didn't read it,

1:02:33SPEAKERthis like cake batter, mute this for a minute.

1:02:37SPEAKERIf we didn't read your question this month,

1:02:38SPEAKERthen maybe submit it again next month

1:02:41SPEAKER'cause there were a bunch of good ones.

1:02:43SPEAKER- I did flag the requisite cake batter question.

1:02:46SPEAKER- Oh, what you got?

1:02:47SPEAKER- Well, there were so many in here,

1:02:48SPEAKERI have to find the one that I did.

1:02:49SPEAKER- There were 17 this month, I checked.

1:02:51SPEAKER- Oh, oh, this was one I actually want to talk about.

1:02:55SPEAKERThe question was simply risk V or five,

1:02:58SPEAKERis it pronounced risk five or risk V?

1:03:01SPEAKER- Risk five.

1:03:02SPEAKER- Yeah, straight from riskfive.org, it is risk five.

1:03:06SPEAKER- Look, if you're gonna ask riskfive.org

1:03:10SPEAKERhow to pronounce it, then you're suddenly a GIF guy.

1:03:14SPEAKER- Wait, what?

1:03:15SPEAKER- 'Cause the CompuServe,

1:03:17SPEAKERthe creator of the CompuServe GIF format

1:03:19SPEAKERis like it's a J, not a G.

1:03:22SPEAKERSo if you're gonna trust the risk org on this,

1:03:26SPEAKERyou have to respect the CompuServe guy too.

1:03:29SPEAKER- Okay, well, anyway, on that note,

1:03:30SPEAKERthe reason I actually want to talk about that was,

1:03:33SPEAKERdid you see just a night or two ago,

1:03:35SPEAKERI guess it might've been in CES, Google announced that

1:03:38SPEAKERrisk five is going to become a tier one architecture

1:03:40SPEAKERfor Android, which-

1:03:42SPEAKER- I can see that, that makes sense.

1:03:43SPEAKER- I mean, it's probably good,

1:03:44SPEAKERlike hedging their bets if nothing else,

1:03:46SPEAKERbut that does seem like kind of a pretty big vote

1:03:48SPEAKERof confidence that they think that risk five based phones

1:03:50SPEAKERare going to become a thing.

1:03:52SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like when Windows NT had a DC alpha support.

1:03:54SPEAKER- Of course, we know how robust the alpha market is

1:03:58SPEAKERthese days.

1:03:59SPEAKER- Yeah, get your MIPS on with NT 4.0, baby.

1:04:02SPEAKER- We've talked about it before though.

1:04:03SPEAKERI mean, like it seems like a no brainer to me

1:04:05SPEAKERthat ARM has royalties and risk five does not.

1:04:08SPEAKERSo of course, somebody at some point is going to want

1:04:12SPEAKERto make phone hardware.

1:04:13SPEAKERIn fact, apparently there's a risk five ship

1:04:15SPEAKERin modern pixels, the security chip

1:04:18SPEAKERin modern pixel phones from Google is risk five

1:04:23SPEAKERrather than ARM, anyway.

1:04:24SPEAKER- My guess is that that follows the same,

1:04:26SPEAKERthe typical open path where it's kind of crappy

1:04:29SPEAKERfor a long time and then all of a sudden enough people

1:04:31SPEAKERstart using it, enough people start shipping hardware

1:04:33SPEAKERthat it gets good.

1:04:34SPEAKER- Yeah, like Intel is very heavily,

1:04:36SPEAKERthey invested like a billion dollars

1:04:38SPEAKERinto risk five development and like Western Digital

1:04:40SPEAKERis big into it.

1:04:40SPEAKERIt seems like it's becoming a thing.

1:04:42SPEAKER- Yeah, I think like, look, on the cosmic timeline,

1:04:48SPEAKERthe royalty free thing always wins.

1:04:50SPEAKER- Yes, that's exactly my feeling.

1:04:52SPEAKER- Yeah, so, but hardware is a slow process.

1:04:55SPEAKERLike you have to remember the pipeline for new chips

1:04:58SPEAKERand phones is like, the pipeline for phones

1:05:01SPEAKERis at least two to five years deep depending on the phone

1:05:04SPEAKERand the chips are another five years behind that.

1:05:08SPEAKERSo like you're looking at five or 10 years

1:05:09SPEAKERbefore we get something that's comparable

1:05:11SPEAKERwith the ARM stuff right now, probably.

1:05:13SPEAKER- Absolutely, also would guess a decade

1:05:15SPEAKERbefore there are like major shipping products, but anyway.

1:05:18SPEAKERAnyway, thanks everybody for all the questions.

1:05:19SPEAKER- Yeah, thanks for sending in great,

1:05:21SPEAKERthey were really good questions this month.

1:05:23SPEAKERWe have the best listeners, I often tell people that,

1:05:25SPEAKERbut I never tell the podcast that, so you all are great.

1:05:28SPEAKERThanks for listening to the show and if you like the show

1:05:31SPEAKERand would like to support it, you can go to,

1:05:33SPEAKERwe're 100% listener supported, Brad, did you know that?

1:05:35SPEAKER- It's true, I do.

1:05:37SPEAKER- You can go to patreon.com/techpod

1:05:42SPEAKERand for as little as $2 a month for like the next little bit

1:05:47SPEAKERwe're gonna turn that off real soon.

1:05:49SPEAKER- I'm just gonna keep saying it every week.

1:05:50SPEAKER- Look, every time we say it, more people sign up,

1:05:52SPEAKERso maybe we should say, no, no,

1:05:54SPEAKERbut we really are getting rid of it.

1:05:57SPEAKERYou can sign up for the, to support the show

1:05:59SPEAKERon the TechPod Patreon and you can get access

1:06:04SPEAKERto the fabulous TechPod Discord.

1:06:05SPEAKERSomebody asked a question that I wanted to get to

1:06:06SPEAKERthat I forgot to about how to get more out of Discord.

1:06:10SPEAKER- Oh, yes.

1:06:11SPEAKER- And I apologize for not having your name here

1:06:14SPEAKERimmediately obvious, but the way I would do it

1:06:17SPEAKERis to find a channel that talks about something

1:06:19SPEAKERyou're interested in and just, oh, it's a Lebkin.

1:06:22SPEAKERThey say, they have trouble finding value in there,

1:06:24SPEAKERwhich I get, it's noisy, like stay away from general.

1:06:29SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, nothing against,

1:06:31SPEAKERgeneral is a place for shit posting.

1:06:34SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like shooting the shit and hanging out, right?

1:06:36SPEAKERLike if you want to learn something,

1:06:38SPEAKERgo into like the Linux channel,

1:06:39SPEAKERfind a topic that you're interested in,

1:06:41SPEAKERgo into the food channel, go to the Linux channel.

1:06:43SPEAKER- Yeah, so the maker channel, you name it.

1:06:46SPEAKER- Yeah, the hobbies and crafts section is real good.

1:06:49SPEAKERAnd just only go in that one,

1:06:51SPEAKERdon't worry about the other stuff.

1:06:52SPEAKERYou don't have to go into every channel.

1:06:54SPEAKER- And also don't worry about reading everything

1:06:56SPEAKERin that channel, like it is ephemeral,

1:06:58SPEAKERit's not like a forum.

1:06:59SPEAKERYou don't have to go back and read every post,

1:07:01SPEAKERjust dip in and out of conversations until,

1:07:03SPEAKERyou know, observe it for a while and get a feel for the,

1:07:06SPEAKER- Or you can, like, I think it's a safe place

1:07:09SPEAKERto ask a question. - Yeah, absolutely.

1:07:10SPEAKER- People are generally very welcoming and kind

1:07:13SPEAKERand generous with their time.

1:07:15SPEAKERSo if you have a question about something

1:07:17SPEAKERthat you're interested in, but maybe not an expert in,

1:07:19SPEAKERit's an okay place to ask that.

1:07:20SPEAKERAnd like I asked when I was getting ready

1:07:24SPEAKERto buy a mechanical keyboard two years ago,

1:07:26SPEAKERI asked some questions, and folks in the mechanical keyboard

1:07:29SPEAKERsection with channel were incredibly helpful.

1:07:32SPEAKERSo I also realized that because we started doing threads

1:07:35SPEAKERin the Discord, we haven't added new channels

1:07:36SPEAKERin a long time.

1:07:37SPEAKERSo we should take a minute and evaluate whether we should,

1:07:41SPEAKERlike what are the popular long running threads

1:07:43SPEAKERshould probably become channels.

1:07:45SPEAKERLike I think there's a picking out closed thread

1:07:47SPEAKERthat gets a lot of traffic.

1:07:49SPEAKERThere should probably be a channel at this point,

1:07:50SPEAKERsome stuff like that.

1:07:52SPEAKERSo send us messages about that as well.

1:07:54SPEAKERMaybe make a thread for that, and we'll,

1:07:56SPEAKERI'm kidding, I'm kidding, I'm kidding.

1:07:57SPEAKER- A thread for your threads?

1:07:59SPEAKER- Yeah, yo threads, yo, I heard you like threads.

1:08:02SPEAKERBut as always, if you would wanna support the channel,

1:08:05SPEAKERyou can go to patreon.com/techpod.

1:08:07SPEAKERAgain, that's patreon.com/techpod.

1:08:09SPEAKERAnd for two bucks a month, you can join the backers,

1:08:13SPEAKERthe producers, the patreons, patrons.

1:08:16SPEAKER- Patrons. - Patrons.

1:08:17SPEAKER- Including our fabulous executive producers

1:08:21SPEAKERwho are patrons who we thank every month,

1:08:22SPEAKERincluding Nick Johnston, Paddle Creek Games,

1:08:24SPEAKERMakers of Fractured Veil, Andrew Slosky,

1:08:26SPEAKERBunny Needs a New Job, Crimes, oh no,

1:08:29SPEAKERI am worried about this, Just Wedge, Joel Krauska,

1:08:33SPEAKERTwinkle Twinkie, and James Kamik.

1:08:34SPEAKERThank you all so, so much.

1:08:35SPEAKERWe appreciate your support, and yes, we do.

1:08:38SPEAKERAs always, we will see you next week.
