00:00SPEAKER- I had a real good barbecue sandwich
00:01SPEAKERon the way back from LA.
00:03SPEAKER- What kind of barbecue are we talking?
00:05SPEAKER- Like a sliced tri-tip with a little bit
00:07SPEAKERof a kind of sweet and tangy,
00:09SPEAKERbut just a little tiny kick of a sauce there on a toasted.
00:13SPEAKERThey did a long, like soft sourdough roll that was toasted.
00:17SPEAKER- Okay.
00:18SPEAKER- With some butter on it.
00:19SPEAKERIt looked like on the grill, maybe.
00:20SPEAKER- That sounds pretty good.
00:21SPEAKERCan you identify the three tips?
00:23SPEAKER- Well, there's three of them.
00:24SPEAKER- Right, yes.
00:25SPEAKER- Yeah. - That's right there
00:26SPEAKERin the name. - There's one, two, and three.
00:28SPEAKER- Yes.
00:29SPEAKER- Which one you cut from?
00:30SPEAKER- I don't.
00:31SPEAKER- You cut against the grain.
00:32SPEAKERSo you cut down the long, one of the two long sides,
00:34SPEAKERbut I always have to do two cuts to figure out,
00:36SPEAKER'cause I never get, it's like the USB-A port.
00:38SPEAKERI never get it right on the first try.
00:39SPEAKER- Oh, wait, hang on.
00:40SPEAKERSo tri-tip is basically just another word for triangle.
00:42SPEAKERIt's like a polygonal beef is what we're saying.
00:45SPEAKER- Yeah. - It's triangular beef.
00:46SPEAKER- It's like a three-sided, it's like an isohedron.
00:51SPEAKER- I see, okay.
00:51SPEAKERI assumed that the tips corresponded
00:54SPEAKERto specific parts of the animal.
00:55SPEAKERI didn't realize it was just the shape of the cut.
00:57SPEAKER- Yeah, no, I think it's called tri-tip
00:59SPEAKERbecause it's just the shape of it.
01:00SPEAKERBoy, now I have questions.
01:02SPEAKER- Okay, this is like less complicated than I thought,
01:05SPEAKERbut also I like the idea of polygonal beef.
01:08SPEAKER- Okay, so I'm gonna tell you a secret.
01:10SPEAKERI had the sandwich once on the way down to LA,
01:13SPEAKERand it was so good, and we ended up stopping
01:15SPEAKERat the same place to charge,
01:16SPEAKERthen went back to get it again on the way back.
01:18SPEAKER- Hang on, I started to say,
01:19SPEAKERdo you want to name and shame the establishment,
01:21SPEAKERbut it's not, what's the opposite of name and fame?
01:24SPEAKERDo you want to name and fame the restaurant?
01:26SPEAKER- Yeah, we can talk about the restaurant.
01:27SPEAKERSo Harris Ranch is this place midway between,
01:29SPEAKERit's pretty much exactly at the midway point
01:31SPEAKERbetween LA and San Francisco on five.
01:33SPEAKERIt's like maybe 20 or 30 miles north.
01:35SPEAKERAnd it's been there for a really long time,
01:37SPEAKERand the restaurant is famously kind of
01:39SPEAKERlike steakhouse overpriced,
01:41SPEAKERplus the people are a little bit rude,
01:42SPEAKERand really the food's not that good.
01:45SPEAKER- Rude in a snooty way, like upper crust of society,
01:49SPEAKERor like rude in a like I don't have time for your shit,
01:52SPEAKERI've just got a job to do.
01:53SPEAKER- Kind of the latter, so.
01:54SPEAKER- Harris Ranch, is that it?
01:55SPEAKERI feel like I've heard of it.
01:57SPEAKER- Harris Ranch, we used to stop there
01:59SPEAKERand get lunch on the way to LA
02:01SPEAKERwhen we would go for tested shoots and stuff like that,
02:03SPEAKER'cause we'd often drive down rather than fly.
02:06SPEAKERSo we stopped, there's a bunch of,
02:09SPEAKERthe reason we stopped there is there's a buttload
02:10SPEAKERof chargers, so you never have to wait.
02:12SPEAKERAnd often I will go in and pick up food
02:15SPEAKERfrom the Harris Ranch restaurant,
02:16SPEAKERwhich is like a big fancy sit down place
02:18SPEAKERwith like Americana stuff jammed on the walls,
02:21SPEAKERand like they have a bazillion tables and whatever.
02:24SPEAKERNow, the thing I didn't realize
02:26SPEAKERis that there's a Harris Ranch Express
02:28SPEAKERin the gas station next to the place.
02:31SPEAKER- Gas station here, gas station tri-tip.
02:34SPEAKER- Gas station barbecue.
02:35SPEAKERI'm gonna go and tell you, I have not had over the years
02:37SPEAKERa lot of bad barbecue in gas stations.
02:40SPEAKER- Wait a minute, have you had a lot of barbecue
02:43SPEAKERin gas stations in general?
02:45SPEAKER- Don't you have, like in Tennessee,
02:47SPEAKERwhen you're driving around Tennessee,
02:48SPEAKERyou often will pull into like a gas station
02:50SPEAKERand there's like a dude with a oil barrel smoker out back.
02:54SPEAKER- What?
02:55SPEAKERDo you not get that in North Carolina?
02:57SPEAKER- No, barbecue establishments are unto themselves.
03:00SPEAKER- Oh. - In my experience.
03:02SPEAKER- No, there was this place in Knoxville
03:04SPEAKERthat was like, it was literally a,
03:07SPEAKERI want to say it was like a sit-go station.
03:08SPEAKERIt was like a third tier gas station,
03:10SPEAKERsomebody that doesn't do marketing.
03:12SPEAKERAnd there was a guy that would make ribs out back
03:15SPEAKERand they were frigging incredible ribs.
03:18SPEAKER- I bet they were the best ribs of your life.
03:20SPEAKER- I mean, let's not get crazy,
03:22SPEAKERbut they were pretty good ribs
03:23SPEAKERand very good for gas station.
03:24SPEAKERAnyway, so yeah.
03:26SPEAKERSo like I'll always eat gas station barbecue.
03:28SPEAKERYou need to get in there and try that.
03:30SPEAKER'Cause if somebody has a gas station,
03:31SPEAKERthey're like, you know what?
03:32SPEAKERWe need to open a barbecue place here.
03:33SPEAKERProbably gonna be pretty good.
03:35SPEAKER- And they got lots of oil right there, just ready to go.
03:38SPEAKER- Oh, Brad, that's the wrong kind of oil.
03:40SPEAKER(upbeat music)
03:54SPEAKER(upbeat music continues)
04:08SPEAKER- Welcome to Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod.
04:11SPEAKERI'm Will.
04:11SPEAKER- I'm Brad.
04:12SPEAKER- Hello, Brad.
04:13SPEAKER- Hi, welcome back.
04:15SPEAKER- I have returned.
04:18SPEAKERI went to a wedding.
04:19SPEAKERI went to two theme parks, three theme parks.
04:22SPEAKER- Oh, I didn't wait.
04:22SPEAKERWas the wedding in the same trip as the theme parks?
04:24SPEAKER- The whole point of the trip was to go to the wedding
04:26SPEAKERand the theme parks we tacked on.
04:28SPEAKER- Oh, I see.
04:29SPEAKERWas it a theme park wedding?
04:31SPEAKER- It was not a theme park wedding,
04:32SPEAKERbut it was a wedding that this was the, I think, fifth try,
04:38SPEAKERbecause it was originally,
04:39SPEAKERlike the invites for the wedding originally went on
04:41SPEAKERin February of 2020 for October of that year.
04:44SPEAKERAnd they kept postponing and postponing and postponing.
04:46SPEAKERAnd they almost did it earlier this year.
04:49SPEAKERAnd then everybody got the Rona the morning
04:51SPEAKERbefore the wedding and they had to cancel.
04:54SPEAKER- Wait, wait, canceled the entire wedding the day before?
04:58SPEAKER- They had to, they had people in from around the world
05:02SPEAKERwho had to go home and without,
05:04SPEAKERwithout witnessing the union of their friends.
05:06SPEAKER- And like, you're probably eating four to five figures
05:11SPEAKERof like, I assume when you cancel that late,
05:13SPEAKERthere's a lot of stuff that's non-refundable.
05:15SPEAKER- I didn't ask.
05:17SPEAKERIt seemed like, look, I'm sure it was expensive.
05:20SPEAKERIt was a lovely wedding.
05:21SPEAKERIt was a great ceremony.
05:22SPEAKERWe had a really good time.
05:23SPEAKER- Oh, that's good. - A bunch of good people.
05:24SPEAKER- Yeah. - Yeah.
05:26SPEAKERAnd I got to meet, it was Frank,
05:29SPEAKERwho I play PUBG with, ever.
05:31SPEAKERI play PUBG at Fortnite with all the time.
05:33SPEAKERIt was his wedding. - Congratulations, Frank.
05:34SPEAKER- So yeah, congratulations, Frank.
05:36SPEAKERBut yeah, so we went down for a wedding.
05:38SPEAKERWe ended up going a few days early for Disneyland.
05:41SPEAKER- Yes, and that's what we're here to talk about.
05:43SPEAKERThe tech of modern theme parks, I guess?
05:48SPEAKER- So I hadn't been to a theme park
05:50SPEAKERsince the phone era started.
05:52SPEAKER- Really? - Since the rise
05:54SPEAKERof the modern smartphone.
05:55SPEAKER- Dang, really?
05:56SPEAKERThat's like, I mean, are we saying,
05:58SPEAKERare we defining that as like 2008?
05:59SPEAKER- I think 2007, 2008, probably when apps started.
06:02SPEAKERI don't know.
06:04SPEAKERI went to Disney World in like 2005,
06:07SPEAKERand then I've been to, I think, Great America a little bit
06:09SPEAKERin the early 2009, 2008, kind of like before
06:13SPEAKEReveryone was expected to have a phone.
06:16SPEAKER'Cause if you remember, and people may not at this point,
06:19SPEAKERbut in the beginning, the iPhone people,
06:22SPEAKERa lot of people looked at it as like,
06:23SPEAKERoh, that thing's really stupid expensive,
06:24SPEAKERand it doesn't really do that much.
06:26SPEAKERAnd then like three years into that,
06:28SPEAKERand all of a sudden you look down,
06:30SPEAKERand everybody in San Francisco had an iPhone 4,
06:32SPEAKERor a Samsung Galaxy phone.
06:37SPEAKERAnd that was a real, like the idea
06:42SPEAKERthat before everyone was expected to have a phone,
06:44SPEAKERhaving a phone was kind of a superpower,
06:46SPEAKER'cause you're able to get information
06:48SPEAKERthat was important wherever you were,
06:51SPEAKERwhich was novel, right?
06:53SPEAKER- And now it has become requisite.
06:55SPEAKER- Yeah, now it's just part of the cost of doing business
06:58SPEAKERin the modern world.
07:00SPEAKERBut yeah, I had never been to Disneyland before,
07:04SPEAKERand I'd never been to,
07:06SPEAKERI hadn't been since the phones became a thing.
07:08SPEAKERSo the last time I went to Disney World,
07:09SPEAKERthey had just introduced Fast Passes,
07:11SPEAKERwhich was a thing where you walked up to a little kiosk
07:13SPEAKERoutside the ride, like the busy rides with the long lines,
07:16SPEAKERand you could get a piece of paper that said,
07:18SPEAKERcome back at this time, and you will be able
07:22SPEAKERto bypass the line.
07:24SPEAKERSo it's like you're virtually waiting in line,
07:27SPEAKERwhich was neat, right?
07:29SPEAKER'Cause then you could go ride with a shorter line
07:31SPEAKERwhile you were waiting,
07:31SPEAKERbut you have to be back within like a 15-minute window.
07:33SPEAKER- Did that just in practice,
07:35SPEAKERjust put you in a shorter, elite line though,
07:37SPEAKERor was it literally just walk right up at your,
07:39SPEAKERI mean, did they assign you a time?
07:41SPEAKER- So they assigned you a specific time,
07:43SPEAKERand usually, and there were a limited number of those slots,
07:46SPEAKERand if you missed your time and you were out of luck,
07:48SPEAKERyou had to just go wait in the normal line.
07:49SPEAKER- Sure, but when it worked as intended,
07:52SPEAKERyou literally just walked right up and got in?
07:53SPEAKER- You would walk right up and usually bypass
07:55SPEAKERsome significant majority of the people in the queue
07:58SPEAKERand go straight to the part where you're moving to get,
08:00SPEAKERlike the last transition into the getting on the ride part.
08:06SPEAKERI'm sure people were upset about that at the time,
08:07SPEAKERbut it actually ended up being nice,
08:09SPEAKER'cause anybody could do it.
08:10SPEAKERYou didn't have to pay anything, I don't think.
08:11SPEAKERYou just walked up to the little thing
08:13SPEAKERand hit the stamp on the piece of paper, spat out,
08:16SPEAKERand then you were good to go.
08:17SPEAKER- Wait, hang on, you didn't pay for the privilege?
08:19SPEAKER- I don't believe that you had to pay for that.
08:21SPEAKERI don't remember, it was a long time ago.
08:22SPEAKERLike I said, it was 20 years ago almost.
08:24SPEAKER- It seems like the kind of thing
08:25SPEAKERthey would happily charge you like,
08:27SPEAKERexcuse me, like $100 a day for or something.
08:29SPEAKER- Well, I mean, you would think that,
08:31SPEAKERbut also it's the kind of thing that evened out the lines
08:36SPEAKERand shortened the wait times for everybody,
08:37SPEAKER'cause it let them control clumping at the different rides,
08:42SPEAKERwhich is, I think, judging by the way they treat the parks
08:45SPEAKERnow, it seems like that's probably a concern.
08:48SPEAKERBut anyway, now you go and you spend the whole damn time
08:54SPEAKERlooking at your phone, which we're gonna talk about.
09:01SPEAKERYou typically, when I go on vacation,
09:03SPEAKERwhen we went to Tahoe last year, when we went to wherever,
09:06SPEAKERmy intent is to not spend a lot of time on my phone,
09:09SPEAKERespecially if I'm spending time with my daughter.
09:11SPEAKERSo a little bit of a bummer that so much
09:14SPEAKERof the modern Disney experience
09:16SPEAKERand theme park experience, frankly,
09:17SPEAKERis like, hey, you have to look at your phone
09:19SPEAKERto figure out what to do and how to get the thing
09:22SPEAKERand how to order food and all this other stuff.
09:23SPEAKERSo anyway.
09:25SPEAKER- Now is this, maybe we will get into this,
09:28SPEAKERis it a have to look at your phone
09:30SPEAKERor is it a can look at your phone
09:31SPEAKERfor more convenience if you like?
09:33SPEAKEROr is it like, hey, this is the only way we do things now?
09:36SPEAKER- I think, okay, so there is some stuff that is the latter.
09:40SPEAKERA lot of it is if you want to be able to do a lot of stuff
09:44SPEAKERin a day or two.
09:45SPEAKERIf you're going to the park for five days,
09:47SPEAKERyou can just leisurely walk around
09:49SPEAKERand if you don't mind waiting in long lines,
09:50SPEAKERyou can wait in long lines.
09:52SPEAKERI don't like waiting in long lines.
09:54SPEAKERI don't do well at it.
09:56SPEAKER- No, look, you're paying a lot of money to be there.
09:58SPEAKERYou have limited time.
09:59SPEAKERLike you gotta weigh the cost benefit.
10:04SPEAKERBut also, is there a human being that has gone
10:07SPEAKERfor five straight days and lived to tell?
10:10SPEAKER- I feel like when I was a kid,
10:12SPEAKERyou'd go to Disney World for five days.
10:14SPEAKER- Dang, that is a man.
10:16SPEAKER- But that's like Disney and Epcot and MGM Studios
10:19SPEAKERall were one big thing down there.
10:21SPEAKERAnd now they have Animal Kingdom and all this other stuff.
10:24SPEAKERSo I don't know.
10:25SPEAKERLike Disneyland feels like a one or two day park to me
10:30SPEAKER'cause it's very small.
10:31SPEAKERThis was the big takeaway from,
10:33SPEAKERas a first time Disneyland attendee is that, wow,
10:37SPEAKERit's small compared to Magic Kingdom.
10:40SPEAKER- Was that the last month's patron episode
10:41SPEAKERthat in real time I pulled up the map of Disneyland
10:44SPEAKERon Google Maps and I was like, oh my God,
10:45SPEAKERit's just like a giant city block.
10:47SPEAKERAnd that's kind of it.
10:49SPEAKER- Yeah, so apparently when Walt bought that,
10:51SPEAKERit was all farmland in the '50s.
10:53SPEAKERAnd it was basically,
10:55SPEAKERhe spent every penny he had buying as much as he could
10:58SPEAKERto the point that like he got friends
11:00SPEAKERto build the Disneyland hotel next to it
11:02SPEAKERbecause he couldn't afford to build the hotel
11:04SPEAKERand buy the land for the hotel
11:06SPEAKERand didn't buy the hotel back until the '80s.
11:08SPEAKER- Is there some weird history of Disneyland?
11:10SPEAKERI'm sure there's like there's reams has been written
11:13SPEAKERabout it.
11:14SPEAKERWas it, have I read that it was like his like
11:16SPEAKERultimate lifelong dream to build theme park?
11:19SPEAKER- Yep, yep.
11:21SPEAKERSo that was it.
11:22SPEAKERThere's a really good documentary on Disney+ about it.
11:25SPEAKERIt's the Imagineering story I think is what it's called.
11:29SPEAKERAnd it's a delight.
11:31SPEAKERIt was informative and good.
11:33SPEAKERSo the interesting thing about Disneyland
11:35SPEAKERversus Disney World is that when Disneyland opened,
11:38SPEAKERthey kind of kept the stuff that Walt worked on the same.
11:43SPEAKERSo there's like a reverence for the work
11:45SPEAKERthat was done on the original Disneyland.
11:48SPEAKERAnd so I think all of those rides are still there.
11:51SPEAKERLike the Jungle Cruise and Autopia and teacups,
11:55SPEAKERthe Mad Hatter teacups and our Mad Tea Party teacups
12:00SPEAKERand the carousel and Mr. Toad and Peter Pan
12:03SPEAKERand like the Abe Lincoln telling stories and all those things
12:08SPEAKERare as they were.
12:10SPEAKER- Oh, hang on.
12:11SPEAKERIt opened, gosh, it opened 1955?
12:13SPEAKER- 1955.
12:14SPEAKER- Wait, and those attractions are still vintage fifties?
12:17SPEAKER- Pretty much, yeah.
12:19SPEAKER- Aside from maintenance?
12:20SPEAKER- I don't know.
12:21SPEAKERLike unlike say Pirates of the Caribbean,
12:24SPEAKERwhich now has Johnny Depp in it, right?
12:26SPEAKERWhich was a sixties era ride.
12:28SPEAKER- The ride at the park has him still?
12:30SPEAKER- The ride at the park has integrated Johnny Depp, yeah.
12:33SPEAKER- Surprised they have not pulled him back out.
12:35SPEAKER- I mean, I think that it takes a while to do that stuff.
12:39SPEAKER- Sure.
12:40SPEAKER- 'Cause it was a fairly,
12:41SPEAKERas I recall the ride was down for a fairly long time
12:42SPEAKERwhen Johnny Depp got added.
12:45SPEAKERThey didn't add Eddie Murphy to the Haunted Mansion, so.
12:49SPEAKER- Well, that's a shame.
12:50SPEAKER- Yeah, so yeah, so those original rides like,
12:55SPEAKERokay, so let me tell you how the day went
12:57SPEAKERwhen we went the first time.
12:58SPEAKER'Cause we stayed at the hotel,
12:59SPEAKERone of the hotels on property,
13:01SPEAKERwhich meant we were able to get in 30 minutes early
13:02SPEAKERbefore they opened the doors for everybody else.
13:05SPEAKERWhich it turns out is very convenient
13:09SPEAKER'cause we were able to get in in the first 30 minutes
13:11SPEAKERand ride a bunch of the,
13:13SPEAKERlike our initial plan was get in,
13:16SPEAKERhaul ass to the Star Wars ride and get on that first
13:19SPEAKERso that we don't have to wait in a two hour line
13:20SPEAKERfor that later or pay actual money
13:23SPEAKERto skip the line on that one, which I have feelings about.
13:27SPEAKER- Is that still the thing?
13:28SPEAKERI assume like that's the current super popular,
13:31SPEAKEReverybody wants to do it first thing.
13:33SPEAKER- So Rise of the Resistance had at any given point
13:36SPEAKERduring the day had like a two, it opens late,
13:39SPEAKERit had a two hour line to get on
13:42SPEAKERat any given point during the day.
13:43SPEAKERIt's like a 25 minute ride,
13:45SPEAKERso it's not like a terrible ratio of time in line
13:47SPEAKERto time on the ride.
13:50SPEAKERBut it was, it's an intense line.
13:54SPEAKERAnd so if you can get in there early,
13:56SPEAKERthen you can ride it first.
13:57SPEAKERBut then we were like, okay, wait,
13:58SPEAKERwe have a nine year old with us
14:00SPEAKERand she's never been to a theme park like this before.
14:04SPEAKERSo if we take her to this 21st century technological marvel
14:09SPEAKERand she rides that first, she's gonna go on Mr. Toad
14:11SPEAKERand be like, what the fuck is this?
14:14SPEAKERSo instead we were like, let's put her on,
14:17SPEAKERlet's get on Space Mountain first, ride the roller coaster.
14:19SPEAKERAnd then, 'cause there's usually a pretty good line for that
14:22SPEAKERand then, and it's worth mentioning,
14:24SPEAKERyou can download, anybody can download the app
14:26SPEAKERand see what the wait times are at any given time.
14:27SPEAKERSo Gina spent a couple of days prior
14:30SPEAKERand she would just check in when she had an idle moment
14:32SPEAKERand look to see what the wait times were like
14:33SPEAKERat any given point during the day.
14:34SPEAKERSo she had a sense of what happens at different,
14:37SPEAKER'cause there's an ebb and flow to the park, it turns out.
14:41SPEAKER- Is that the Disney Genie service?
14:43SPEAKER- So that is the Disneyland app.
14:45SPEAKER- Okay.
14:46SPEAKER- The Disney Genie service is different.
14:47SPEAKERWe'll talk about that in a minute.
14:48SPEAKER- Okay.
14:50SPEAKER- So yeah, so we ended up going to a bunch
14:51SPEAKERof the early rides, the stuff that was opening,
14:54SPEAKERthe opening day rides.
14:54SPEAKERSo we rode Peter Pan and Mr. Toad and the Tea Cups
14:59SPEAKERand Alice in Wonderland, which came later,
15:01SPEAKERand like Pinocchio and some other stuff
15:03SPEAKERthat's all kind of clumped up in this small area
15:05SPEAKERin the center of the park.
15:08SPEAKERAnd like those rides hold up incredibly well.
15:12SPEAKERI had never ridden Peter Pan before
15:15SPEAKERand it's like this overhead,
15:16SPEAKERlike the cart that you get in is like a pirate ship
15:19SPEAKERand it's on an overhead track
15:21SPEAKERand the overhead track goes up and down.
15:22SPEAKERAnd I think the tagline of it is you'll believe
15:24SPEAKERyou can fly because like it does little swoops and stuff
15:27SPEAKERand it feels awesome.
15:28SPEAKERIt's really fun.
15:29SPEAKER- Feel it in the gut.
15:31SPEAKER- Yeah, and they tell stories
15:32SPEAKERand like the whole thing is handled really, really well.
15:36SPEAKEREven, they're almost like retcons,
15:40SPEAKERbut like there's a Pinocchio ride
15:41SPEAKERthat was done in the 80s that's in that same area
15:45SPEAKERthat has this incredible projection of the blue ferry
15:50SPEAKERthat turns them into a real boy at the end.
15:52SPEAKERI don't have any idea how they did that.
15:54SPEAKERLike it just is projected into space
15:56SPEAKERand it looks like a hologram.
15:58SPEAKERAnd I'm just like, this is freaking cool.
16:00SPEAKERI need to go look up
16:01SPEAKERand I'm sure there's 50 YouTube videos
16:02SPEAKERthat explain how this works.
16:03SPEAKERI'm gonna do that after later on.
16:04SPEAKERI don't want to spoil it.
16:05SPEAKER- Oh God, I haven't even thought about that.
16:06SPEAKERYeah, so I understand there is an extreme subculture
16:09SPEAKERof theme park goers on YouTube and other.
16:12SPEAKER- There is a scene, yes.
16:13SPEAKER- Yeah, a scene is the word for it.
16:16SPEAKERIs Space Mountain original?
16:17SPEAKERNo, I just wanna know. - No, Space Mountain
16:18SPEAKERwas built in the 70s.
16:19SPEAKER- 70s, yes. - Late 70s.
16:20SPEAKER- How does that hold up?
16:21SPEAKERSo I've written Disney World, Space Mountain
16:24SPEAKERand I don't know if they are identical or were.
16:26SPEAKEROkay, in my memory, Space Mountain in my memory was like,
16:33SPEAKERokay, generally I think of Disneyland/world
16:35SPEAKERas like these rides are not super scary or super fast.
16:38SPEAKERThey're more for like vibes.
16:41SPEAKERThey're more for like scenery and animatronics
16:43SPEAKERand telling a story and kind of putting you in a place,
16:45SPEAKERbut they're not like hair raising, stomach turning
16:49SPEAKERexcept for Space Mountain.
16:50SPEAKERLike in my memory, Space Mountain is like,
16:52SPEAKERthat's the hardcore rollercoaster.
16:54SPEAKER- So there are three or four,
16:56SPEAKERdepending on whether you count Splash Mountain,
16:58SPEAKERthe log flume as like a hardcore ride.
17:02SPEAKERBut Space Mountain because it's in the dark
17:05SPEAKERand you can't see where you're going is intense.
17:07SPEAKERSo it's a rollercoaster, it's built in a big dark dome.
17:10SPEAKERThere's a bunch of stars like that are fiber optic stars
17:13SPEAKERall through the walls.
17:14SPEAKERAnd maybe they're just led stars now, I couldn't tell.
17:17SPEAKERBut basically the story is you're going on
17:20SPEAKERthe space journey and like you get the dark rollercoaster,
17:25SPEAKERthe shit out of you as you're doing it.
17:28SPEAKERSpace Mountain was, I think my daughter's favorite ride
17:30SPEAKERat Disneyland.
17:31SPEAKERWe rode it three times. - Really, no kidding.
17:32SPEAKEROkay, I haven't ridden it in, God, 30 plus years.
17:37SPEAKER- It's a real good first rollercoaster.
17:39SPEAKER- Yeah, all I remember of it is dark and lights.
17:42SPEAKER- So it doesn't go upside down.
17:43SPEAKERIt doesn't do anything super scary.
17:46SPEAKERIt just is like really exciting.
17:47SPEAKERAnd you're constantly being kind of thrashed around
17:49SPEAKERand you feel like you're going insanely fast
17:51SPEAKER'cause you're in the dark.
17:52SPEAKERNow, when I was at Disney World last time,
17:55SPEAKERthe lights came on when we were going up the ramp
17:58SPEAKERat Space Mountain.
17:59SPEAKERI will tell you, it is the most scary ride I've ever been on
18:01SPEAKERbecause the clearances are so high that I like,
18:03SPEAKERI don't put my hands up on Space Mountain anymore.
18:06SPEAKERI'm sure it's fine too, I'm good.
18:08SPEAKERAnyway.
18:09SPEAKER- Was that accidental or was that like that was unscheduled
18:12SPEAKERor not intentional?
18:12SPEAKER- I think they had a maintenance problem
18:14SPEAKERor somebody dropped something, they had to go get it
18:15SPEAKERor what, I don't know.
18:16SPEAKERBut like they were like, the lights are coming on
18:18SPEAKERin five, four, three, two, one, and then the lights came on.
18:21SPEAKER- What was on the inside of the walls?
18:23SPEAKERCould you see, was it like kind of dampening material?
18:25SPEAKER- It's all like structure.
18:26SPEAKERIt's all like, basically, all you see is like,
18:30SPEAKERit's like being on the inside of the Statue of Liberty
18:32SPEAKERor something, right?
18:33SPEAKERYou see all the superstructure stuff.
18:34SPEAKER- Right, of course.
18:35SPEAKER- It's what I remember.
18:36SPEAKER- I didn't know if they have like some like black felt
18:38SPEAKERon the walls or something to increase the, no.
18:41SPEAKER- It's just real dark in there, man.
18:42SPEAKER- Okay.
18:43SPEAKER- Yeah.
18:45SPEAKERAnd the ride is kind of far from the walls.
18:46SPEAKERSo I think that's how they,
18:49SPEAKERI assume that there was some sort of sound dampening
18:50SPEAKERon the inside of the wall.
18:52SPEAKERSo it doesn't make a ton of noise, but.
18:54SPEAKER- Actually, just the very idea of an indoor roller coaster
18:58SPEAKERis kind of wild when you think about it,
18:59SPEAKER'cause there are not a lot of those that I'm aware of.
19:03SPEAKER- Yeah, I think that was probably pretty novel at the time.
19:07SPEAKERThe ones that are indoors are usually pretty small, I think.
19:10SPEAKERThey're like kid rides, but yeah.
19:14SPEAKERThe other thing about it is,
19:17SPEAKERlike one of the technological things that changed over time
19:19SPEAKERis they stopped trying to put speakers in the world
19:21SPEAKERand they just put them on your car
19:22SPEAKERand timed the sound playback
19:25SPEAKERto like match where you are in the ride, yeah.
19:29SPEAKERAnd then the later rides, they even do like,
19:32SPEAKERit seems like they're doing like HRTF positional shit
19:34SPEAKERon like the, because there's multiple speakers
19:37SPEAKERthroughout the car.
19:38SPEAKERMaybe they're probably not doing HRTFs,
19:40SPEAKERbut they're positioning sound in the world
19:42SPEAKERusing multiple speakers inside the cars, which is a trip.
19:45SPEAKERAs opposed to like, it's a small world
19:47SPEAKERwhere they just blast that fucking song at maximum volume.
19:51SPEAKERI'm gonna go and tell you.
19:53SPEAKERWe broke down on it's a small world.
19:55SPEAKERIt was a dark time.
19:56SPEAKER- What?
19:57SPEAKER- We were like stuck for like five minutes.
19:58SPEAKERIt wasn't the end of the world, but.
19:59SPEAKER- Wait, did the music continue while you were stuck?
20:02SPEAKER- Never stops, Brad.
20:02SPEAKER- Oh no, God.
20:03SPEAKER- Never stops.
20:06SPEAKERI did tell my daughter that if any children who get lost
20:09SPEAKERand become the property of the Disney corporation
20:11SPEAKERhave to sit underneath, it's a small world
20:13SPEAKERand crank the kids.
20:15SPEAKER- They become part of the ride.
20:17SPEAKER- Yeah.
20:18SPEAKERSo yeah, it was interesting seeing like the stratification
20:21SPEAKERof the park and seeing like the opening rides
20:23SPEAKERand the like the fifties rides, like Alice in Wonderland,
20:25SPEAKERlike the things that opened shortly after the park,
20:27SPEAKERlike Alice in Wonderland, and then the sixties stuff
20:30SPEAKERlike Pirates and Haunted Mansion,
20:32SPEAKERwhere they got really good animatronics
20:34SPEAKERand they got good at like, like Haunted Mansion
20:37SPEAKERhas these hologram projections that are a trip.
20:41SPEAKERLike they remain amazing where they have like ghosts
20:43SPEAKERflying around a big room, eating food and stuff like that.
20:47SPEAKERIt was dressed for Halloween while we were there,
20:49SPEAKERwhich means it had the Nightmare Before Christmas
20:53SPEAKERstuff in there.
20:54SPEAKERSo we're like, we saw the Oogie Boogie
20:55SPEAKERand Jack Skellington and all that stuff.
20:59SPEAKER- That seems like a movie I should see at some point.
21:01SPEAKER- It is, that is, if you like Tim Burton's eighties bullshit,
21:05SPEAKEReighties and nineties bullshit, it is very good.
21:07SPEAKER- I do.
21:08SPEAKER- Yeah.
21:09SPEAKER- Man, I, we shouldn't get into it,
21:10SPEAKERbut since we're talking about Disney,
21:12SPEAKERwe babysat small children last weekend.
21:15SPEAKERAnd so there were a fair number of Disney movies
21:17SPEAKERplayed over the weekend,
21:18SPEAKERwhich got me down a rabbit hole of reading about like the,
21:21SPEAKERpretty much the whole history of Walt Disney animation,
21:25SPEAKERbut primarily, primarily like the kind of dip in the eighties
21:27SPEAKERand then the sort of nineties Renaissance.
21:31SPEAKER- Early nineties rebound, yeah.
21:32SPEAKER- Musical kind of starting with sort of what,
21:35SPEAKERLittle Mermaids Tarzan, I think is considered the,
21:39SPEAKERthe high point for me there is like Little Mermaid
21:42SPEAKERto Aladdin, probably Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid,
21:45SPEAKERBeauty and the Beast.
21:46SPEAKER- Yeah, yes.
21:47SPEAKER- Tarzan's okay.
21:48SPEAKER- Yes, I can't remember why I brought that up.
21:51SPEAKERThere was a reason something you were talking about
21:52SPEAKERreminded me of that, but.
21:53SPEAKER- Well, I mean, there was a, they got good at anime,
21:56SPEAKERlike they got really good at animation, at 2D animation.
21:59SPEAKERAnd like Nightmare Before Christmas
22:03SPEAKERis incredible stop motion animation.
22:05SPEAKER- That's what it was, was finding out number one,
22:08SPEAKERnot only how many kind of big current and recent big name,
22:13SPEAKERdirectors, creators, et cetera,
22:15SPEAKERhave come through that studio,
22:16SPEAKERbut also how many of them were fired from it.
22:18SPEAKERIt was like Tim Burton, Brad Bird,
22:22SPEAKERtwo or three others that I'm trying to think of
22:24SPEAKERthat are like very well-known people in animation these days
22:26SPEAKERlike all went to Disney animation and all got fired
22:30SPEAKERfor various infractions and then turned around
22:33SPEAKERand became huge.
22:34SPEAKER- Yeah, well, and at that same time, Pixar was spinning up
22:37SPEAKERand then Toy Story came out at the end of the decade
22:39SPEAKERand you're like, oh, right, wow, this is a different thing.
22:42SPEAKER- Also, this is ancient history
22:43SPEAKERand there's maybe the documentary out there or something,
22:45SPEAKERbut they were getting into a lot of digital ink
22:47SPEAKERand paint stuff with those early nineties,
22:49SPEAKERlike moving into Beauty and the Beast and stuff like that.
22:52SPEAKER- Yeah.
22:53SPEAKER- Like I didn't realize they weren't just straight up
22:54SPEAKERlike painting cells at that point.
22:56SPEAKER- Yeah, my understanding is that the tools have not changed
23:00SPEAKERa whole lot in that space in the last 20 years.
23:04SPEAKER- So yeah, the sixties rides were neat.
23:08SPEAKERThe seventies and eighties stuff is all the action stuff
23:11SPEAKERlike Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain
23:13SPEAKERand Space Mountain and all that.
23:14SPEAKERAnd then we got to Star Wars.
23:16SPEAKER- Actually, real quick before we,
23:18SPEAKERI've seen before we get into the Star Wars stuff proper,
23:20SPEAKERI've seen the name Hyperspace Mountain floating around,
23:22SPEAKERis that a thing?
23:24SPEAKER- I don't know that one, that wasn't at Disneyland.
23:27SPEAKER- Okay.
23:28SPEAKER- Hyperspace Mountain might be a thing that they do
23:30SPEAKERto fancy up Space Mountain during a specific season,
23:33SPEAKERthey do a lot of that.
23:35SPEAKER- Oh, yes, it is in fact seasonal.
23:40SPEAKER2015, November, 2015,
23:42SPEAKERthey, it sounds like they dressed up Space Mountain.
23:46SPEAKER- Might've been a anniversary or something, but yeah.
23:48SPEAKERThe, I was a little bummed that Haunted Mansion
23:51SPEAKERwas like, you know, Jack Skellington,
23:55SPEAKERbecause I would have liked to take the kiddo
23:57SPEAKERand have her see the real one.
23:59SPEAKER'Cause it's creepy, but not scary.
24:01SPEAKER- Yeah, so Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion
24:04SPEAKERare basically the two things that I remember the most
24:06SPEAKERfrom going to Disney World as a kid.
24:08SPEAKERWell, it was actually 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea also,
24:10SPEAKERit was pretty memorable.
24:11SPEAKER- Oh, you mean Finding Nemo?
24:14SPEAKER- No, don't tip that. - Nemo's Undersea Adventure,
24:16SPEAKERBrad.
24:17SPEAKER- Damn it, no, are you serious?
24:18SPEAKER- They do a really good thing in that where they like,
24:21SPEAKERI like that ride a lot, it's a goofy ride.
24:23SPEAKERMy daughter was completely unimpressed,
24:25SPEAKERbut they hide all the transitions from like,
24:27SPEAKERas you're going super deep,
24:29SPEAKERby just blowing a shitload of bubbles along the windows
24:31SPEAKERso you can't really see anything for a minute.
24:33SPEAKER- Sure.
24:34SPEAKER- It's like, it's some real sixties era technology.
24:38SPEAKER- Wait, do they have that one at Disneyland too?
24:39SPEAKER- They have it at Disneyland too, yeah.
24:40SPEAKER- Oh, did you know you did that one?
24:42SPEAKERLook, I have nothing against Finding Nemo,
24:44SPEAKERbut I just, I really loved that Jules Verne era
24:48SPEAKERkind of vibe to everything.
24:49SPEAKER- As somebody who saw that Jules Verne,
24:52SPEAKERwho rode that Jules Verne ride in like 2005,
24:57SPEAKERthe things that I was amazed by when I was nine
25:01SPEAKERdid not hold up, like the giant squid fight,
25:04SPEAKERpretty underwhelming, I'm gonna say.
25:05SPEAKER- That's fair, okay, well,
25:07SPEAKERI was mightily impressed at the time,
25:09SPEAKERbut so Haunted Mansion does hold up because that one to me,
25:11SPEAKERlike I vaguely remember the holograms
25:14SPEAKERand I extra remember the creepy,
25:16SPEAKERvery subtly animating paintings hanging everywhere.
25:20SPEAKER- Yeah, the paintings and the hologram stuff
25:23SPEAKERis still incredible, the animatronics are neat.
25:27SPEAKERThe one in Disneyland works the other way,
25:30SPEAKERso I think Disney World, you go up when you get
25:34SPEAKERin the elevator, the one in Disneyland, you go down.
25:39SPEAKERIt was weird because, well, so the other thing that's,
25:44SPEAKERso yeah, it super holds up, it's one of my,
25:47SPEAKERit's my absolute favorite, I think, of all the things
25:49SPEAKERthat are like our Disney exclusive rides or whatever.
25:52SPEAKERThe thing that I'll say about it is it's interesting
25:57SPEAKER'cause it also highlights the different eras
25:59SPEAKERof their line management technology.
26:02SPEAKERSo in the early park days, they clearly just have queues
26:07SPEAKERwhere you go in and you stand in a line
26:10SPEAKERand then they stop the thing for a minute, you jump on
26:13SPEAKERand then they start the thing and you go back.
26:15SPEAKERAnd they work like ski lifts where they can decouple
26:19SPEAKERthe ride from the pull track or whatever for just a second
26:23SPEAKERso people can get on, but that causes it to clump up
26:26SPEAKERand it means the rate at which they can get people on,
26:29SPEAKERlike if you've played a lot of Rollercoaster Tycoon,
26:30SPEAKERyou know the rate at which you get people on and off
26:33SPEAKERthe ride is the most important thing, it's all that matters.
26:36SPEAKERSo then Haunted Mansion is the first thing that I rode
26:39SPEAKERthat they have the people mover where you step
26:41SPEAKERon a conveyor belt when you get off the queue
26:43SPEAKERand the conveyor belt moves at the same speed as the ride
26:45SPEAKERso the ride never slows down.
26:48SPEAKERSo you just get on the people mover, you walk up
26:49SPEAKERand you step right on, it's like your relative motion
26:51SPEAKERis exactly the same, but no difference in speed.
26:55SPEAKERThey do that on a bunch of stuff now,
26:57SPEAKERincluding like the log flumes at California Adventure
27:00SPEAKERor tube rides at California Adventure
27:02SPEAKERand stuff like that even,
27:04SPEAKERwhich puts you in a real weird brain space
27:06SPEAKERwhere it feels like the concrete base of the ride
27:08SPEAKERis moving, but the thing you're standing on isn't.
27:12SPEAKER- You're stationary, man, that's a trip.
27:14SPEAKER- Yeah.
27:15SPEAKER- I assume the people mover's not that fast.
27:17SPEAKER- The people mover, it goes at a pretty good clip.
27:19SPEAKERLike it's not slow on the Haunted Mansion,
27:24SPEAKERat least at Disneyland.
27:26SPEAKERI mean, you accelerate to like fast people movers.
27:30SPEAKER- Airport, maybe style?
27:32SPEAKER- Maybe it's as fast or faster
27:33SPEAKERthan an airport one would be, yeah.
27:36SPEAKERIt wasn't like, there wasn't a risk of you falling down,
27:39SPEAKERbut like if you were a little unsteady, maybe, I guess.
27:43SPEAKERSo yeah, one of the things that I like,
27:45SPEAKERbut the Haunted Mansion also sends people down in batches.
27:47SPEAKERSo they're like, you go into this room
27:49SPEAKERand it's like the waiting room,
27:50SPEAKERthere's five doors out of that.
27:51SPEAKERSo that means that they can keep
27:54SPEAKERthe elevators cycling constantly.
27:56SPEAKERSo there's always a group going down,
27:58SPEAKERalways a group loading in, which is interesting.
28:00SPEAKERAnd then you have stuff like the rebadged Tower of Terror,
28:04SPEAKERwhich is the Guardians of the Galaxy ride
28:05SPEAKERat California Adventure,
28:07SPEAKERwhere they load in an entire group of people,
28:11SPEAKER10 cars worth of people, two stories high,
28:14SPEAKERbut then that ride, there's no movement on the line
28:16SPEAKERfor the two minutes that the ride's going, right?
28:18SPEAKERSo you're like, you're going up and down,
28:20SPEAKERup and down, up and down, and then they unload everybody,
28:22SPEAKERand then they start loading the new people in immediately.
28:25SPEAKERBut there's no continual flow on those.
28:27SPEAKER- What is California Adventure, is it extension?
28:30SPEAKER- Yeah, so California Adventure
28:31SPEAKERis an entirely separate theme park
28:33SPEAKERthat's like half the size of Disneyland
28:34SPEAKERthat's on the south end of the,
28:37SPEAKERit's on the south end of that same block.
28:39SPEAKERAnd it has a lot of Pixar stuff.
28:42SPEAKERIt has a lot of, like, I mean,
28:45SPEAKERactually it's mostly Pixar stuff.
28:48SPEAKERThere's a giant, there's a huge lagoon at one end
28:51SPEAKERwhere they do this world of color thing
28:52SPEAKERthat I definitely want to talk about,
28:54SPEAKER'cause it's kind of magic, it's kind of incredible, actually.
28:57SPEAKERIt's like a light and laser show, and water show,
29:00SPEAKERwhere they have all these water cannons under this lagoon
29:04SPEAKERthat blast water up, and then they project scenes
29:06SPEAKERfrom movies onto the water in the air.
29:09SPEAKER- That's good.
29:11SPEAKER- They do a lot of lasers through the things
29:13SPEAKERto highlight the different parts
29:15SPEAKERof the water at the specific times.
29:17SPEAKERIt is a phenomenally cool,
29:21SPEAKERlike 25 or 30 minute thing that they do instead of fireworks
29:25SPEAKER'cause they're in downtown Anaheim
29:26SPEAKERand they don't want to annoy people, I assume.
29:28SPEAKER- I guess that's probably,
29:29SPEAKERactually, I've been meaning to ask.
29:31SPEAKERI mean, okay, if I remember Disney World
29:34SPEAKERis kind of in a swamp, right?
29:36SPEAKER- Yeah.
29:37SPEAKER- Sort of?
29:38SPEAKER- No, that's right.
29:39SPEAKER- Yeah, and again, we've said Disneyland
29:41SPEAKERis right there in the middle of Anaheim.
29:42SPEAKERLike, when you're in the middle of the park,
29:44SPEAKERare you aware that you're in the middle of Anaheim?
29:46SPEAKERLike, can you kind of see the city proper outside,
29:49SPEAKERor like are the sight lines like such
29:51SPEAKERthat you're kind of ensconced in a little Disney bubble?
29:55SPEAKER- The sight lines are such that you have no idea.
29:57SPEAKERYou're like, you don't see building,
29:59SPEAKERyou don't see high rises or anything.
30:01SPEAKERLike at some point, the park's small enough
30:04SPEAKERthat at some points, like you see the Matterhorn,
30:05SPEAKERyou see bits of the Star Wars land or stuff like that.
30:12SPEAKERBut for the most part, no, you don't see the city.
30:14SPEAKERAnd there's bits of California Adventure, I guess,
30:16SPEAKERwhere you can see like a convention center outside the park
30:19SPEAKERand stuff like that.
30:20SPEAKER- You know, I assume everything's so chaotic,
30:21SPEAKERyou can't pick up traffic noise outside and stuff.
30:24SPEAKER- No, and there are some places,
30:26SPEAKERlike there's this wall at the end of California Adventure
30:28SPEAKERwhere they're like highlighting,
30:30SPEAKER'cause California Adventure is all things California.
30:32SPEAKERIt was, I think people made fun of it when it opened
30:34SPEAKER'cause it seemed a little goofy.
30:36SPEAKERBut like they have a huge perspective wall,
30:38SPEAKERlike you would put at the end of a movie shot,
30:40SPEAKERlike the end of a street at a movie shot
30:42SPEAKERto make it look like whatever area you want it to look like,
30:45SPEAKERwhich it turns out is a really fun place
30:46SPEAKERto go up and take stupid photos
30:47SPEAKER'cause you can like get right up on somebody
30:49SPEAKERand make them look really tiny,
30:50SPEAKERor you get like a wide angle shot from below
30:52SPEAKERand make them look like they're like 50 feet tall.
30:55SPEAKERBut that perspective wall is like 100 feet tall,
30:59SPEAKERit looks like it's really, really tall.
31:01SPEAKERAnd I assume that they're probably blocking
31:02SPEAKERlike some building that's just out,
31:04SPEAKERthat's been built just outside the park or something there.
31:08SPEAKERBut yeah, for the most part,
31:09SPEAKERyou don't, you feel as isolated from the real world
31:12SPEAKERin Disneyland as you would in Disney World.
31:15SPEAKERIt's also much, at least this time of year,
31:17SPEAKERthe weather was much more temperate
31:18SPEAKER'cause in Florida we would have been roasting.
31:21SPEAKERSo, okay, I wanna talk about the Star Wars stuff
31:24SPEAKER'cause it's a trip.
31:26SPEAKERThe Star Wars land is like a 21st century.
31:30SPEAKERIt takes the things that Universal did with Harry Potter
31:33SPEAKERwhere the queues for the rides have like,
31:37SPEAKERyou know, are part of the attraction, right?
31:39SPEAKERSo like when you're in the queue for a Harry Potter ride,
31:41SPEAKERyou see Dumbledore and you see like the paintings
31:44SPEAKERon the walls all move and you will walk through
31:47SPEAKERthe classrooms from the books or the movies.
31:50SPEAKER- Oh wow, that's pretty elaborate.
31:52SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like, it is intense to the point,
31:56SPEAKERso we went to Universal after this
31:57SPEAKERand it is intense to the point that we went back
32:00SPEAKERto wait in line to see some of the stuff that we missed
32:02SPEAKERwhen we used the Fast Pass on the first day.
32:07SPEAKERSo, the Star Wars stuff is the same.
32:12SPEAKERLike the whole area of the park is interactive.
32:15SPEAKERLike there's people walking around,
32:16SPEAKERthe Disneyland employees that are called cast members
32:19SPEAKERare walking around in like Star Wars costumes
32:22SPEAKERand there's like a first order area
32:23SPEAKERand there's a resistance area.
32:26SPEAKERAnd if you're in the first order area,
32:27SPEAKERyou're gonna see some like Imperial officer looking people
32:31SPEAKERthat yell at you.
32:33SPEAKERAnd if you're in the resistance area,
32:34SPEAKERyou see like resistance dirt bag looking people,
32:37SPEAKERyou know, that are clearly scrappy underdogs.
32:40SPEAKERBut there's a game that runs underneath the whole area
32:46SPEAKERthat you play on your phone.
32:49SPEAKERSo like, it's like a Pokemon Go situation
32:52SPEAKERwhere you walk around the world and like, it'll pop up,
32:55SPEAKERthe phone will pop up and say,
32:56SPEAKER"Hey, there's a quest that needs to be done.
32:58SPEAKERCan you do it?
32:59SPEAKERWe have a mission for you.
32:59SPEAKERCan you take it on?"
33:01SPEAKERAnd you look at it and it gives you faction
33:03SPEAKERin either like the smuggler group,
33:06SPEAKERthe resistance group or the first order group.
33:08SPEAKERAnd it'll be like complete a little puzzle on your phone
33:10SPEAKERand then some shit in the park around you will happen.
33:13SPEAKERSo like sometimes it's like you click a button
33:15SPEAKERand open a door.
33:17SPEAKERSometimes it's like a panel lights up.
33:19SPEAKERSometimes it's like Kylo Ren's TIE fighter thing
33:22SPEAKERwill like make smoke and shit will happen on it.
33:25SPEAKER- Okay, that's kind of cool.
33:27SPEAKERI started to say like using the phone to lubricate
33:31SPEAKERthe aspects of the park that have a lot of friction,
33:34SPEAKERwaiting and trying to get food and stuff is one thing,
33:37SPEAKERbut like actively pushing you to do a thing on your phone
33:40SPEAKERwhen you're surrounded by all this magic and wonder
33:42SPEAKERmaybe is a little questionable.
33:43SPEAKERBut then on the other hand,
33:44SPEAKERwhen you say like do a thing on your phone
33:46SPEAKERand make something like weird happen in the real world
33:49SPEAKERactually sounds pretty awesome.
33:51SPEAKER- Well, and also this didn't happen to us
33:53SPEAKER'cause I didn't spend the time
33:54SPEAKER'cause I was there to spend time with my kid,
33:55SPEAKERnot grind faction with Kylo Ren.
33:59SPEAKERBut like if you go to the park on the reg
34:02SPEAKERand you grind faction with Kylo Ren,
34:04SPEAKEReventually theoretically you're gonna get pulled
34:06SPEAKERinto something by the cast members.
34:07SPEAKER- I can't believe you just spoke that sentence aloud.
34:10SPEAKER- Look, which part?
34:12SPEAKER- Go to the park regularly and grind faction with Kylo Ren.
34:15SPEAKER- And sometimes you got to grind that faction.
34:18SPEAKERSo yeah, like it's weird though, right?
34:21SPEAKER'Cause it feels like you're spending a lot of money
34:22SPEAKERto go to this park and like I could walk around my backyard
34:27SPEAKERand play Pokemon Go if I wanted.
34:29SPEAKER- Right, it's maybe a little questionable.
34:31SPEAKERAlthough like it kind of, I mean, you tell me,
34:32SPEAKERit almost reminds me of the thing you've said a lot about
34:35SPEAKERlike coding pure software is one thing,
34:37SPEAKERbut like coding to make Arduino lights blink
34:40SPEAKERis much more satisfying.
34:42SPEAKERLike doing a computer thing to make a real world thing
34:44SPEAKERhappen has got a certain satisfaction to it.
34:47SPEAKERSo like the idea of opening a door.
34:49SPEAKER- I will tell you when I made the door,
34:51SPEAKERwhen I made the lights blink and the door open
34:53SPEAKERand Kylo Ren's spaceship do something,
34:54SPEAKEReveryone in the party was excited.
34:56SPEAKER- That's cool.
34:57SPEAKER- Like everybody was stoked about it.
34:59SPEAKER- Yeah.
35:00SPEAKER- The weird part about that specific part of the park
35:03SPEAKERis there's not a lot of food.
35:05SPEAKERSo like, there's a place to get some wraps
35:08SPEAKERand there's a cantina where you can get drinks in blue milk.
35:11SPEAKERI don't think you can get drinks drinks.
35:12SPEAKER- It's gotta be blue milk.
35:13SPEAKER- There's blue milk.
35:15SPEAKERWe did not try the blue milk.
35:16SPEAKERI like the last thing I want when I'm walking around
35:18SPEAKERa theme park and it's 90 degrees is some,
35:20SPEAKERis a nice big glass of milk, but.
35:22SPEAKER- Wow, what is its flavor?
35:24SPEAKERI wonder if they add, it's probably all sugar in there.
35:27SPEAKER- I'm sure it's a lot of sugar.
35:30SPEAKERBut the rides were pretty incredible.
35:31SPEAKERLike the rides of the resistance ride is 25 minutes
35:35SPEAKERand you can use the phone and well, I guess we'll,
35:40SPEAKERlet's talk about the Genie Plus stuff in a minute
35:42SPEAKER'cause it's goofy.
35:44SPEAKERBut you like, there's a part where you walk through
35:47SPEAKERsome stuff and you like, when you get to the ride portion
35:50SPEAKERand like you get a mission from Ray and BB-8
35:57SPEAKERand like characters from the postquels,
36:02SPEAKERthen you get captured by the first order
36:07SPEAKERand they yell at you and are like,
36:09SPEAKERgo stand in the line prisoners
36:10SPEAKERand you go get in a prison cell, there's a prison break,
36:13SPEAKERthere's all sorts of stuff happens.
36:14SPEAKERLike you end up in a spaceship stuff, you get sent to space,
36:18SPEAKERyou ride in these, like you get in these people movers
36:21SPEAKEReventually that are essentially, they're a trip.
36:26SPEAKERSo you get in these people movers and they're like,
36:30SPEAKERyou're in like a ride on rails, right?
36:32SPEAKERExcept they're on omni wheels or something
36:34SPEAKERand they're just driving around free on the ground.
36:37SPEAKERLike there's literally, there's no tracks.
36:40SPEAKERSo you're in with like two or three other cars
36:43SPEAKERof these people movers, stormtroopers are shooting at you,
36:45SPEAKEReverybody's yelling,
36:46SPEAKERthere's all sorts of exciting shit happening,
36:47SPEAKERthere's lightsabers and then all of a sudden,
36:50SPEAKERyou're just doing a ballet with these other carts
36:54SPEAKERfull of people in this open area
36:56SPEAKERand like you see adults and more stormtroopers
36:59SPEAKERand it is, we literally got off the ride,
37:05SPEAKERwe only rode it once 'cause I didn't wanna pay
37:07SPEAKERmultiple times to skip the two hour line
37:08SPEAKERand I wasn't gonna wait in two hour line.
37:11SPEAKERBut it was very much a, hey,
37:16SPEAKERa bunch of shit's gonna happen to you,
37:18SPEAKERyou're gonna see some Star Wars stuff,
37:19SPEAKERsomebody's gonna cut through some stuff with a lightsaber,
37:22SPEAKERthere's gonna be a hole in the side of the spaceship
37:24SPEAKERand all the air is gonna get sucked out
37:25SPEAKERand it's gonna actually feel like that.
37:27SPEAKERLike it was a full assault on the senses
37:29SPEAKERfor about 25 minutes.
37:32SPEAKER- A full assault on the senses is a pretty good description
37:34SPEAKERof the theme park experience generally.
37:36SPEAKER- It really was.
37:38SPEAKER- Yeah, how was a lot of the stuff represented?
37:40SPEAKERLike was it animatronic
37:41SPEAKERor was there like video wall stuff going on or?
37:43SPEAKER- It was a little bit of everything,
37:44SPEAKERlike they had Star Wars looking holograms
37:47SPEAKERfor some of the characters, there were animatronics,
37:51SPEAKERthere were screens that were placed far enough away
37:54SPEAKERin such a perspective that you couldn't tell
37:56SPEAKERthat they were screens probably.
37:59SPEAKERThere's apparently multiple paths through that ride
38:01SPEAKERbased on whether or not, like if animatronics go down,
38:04SPEAKERthen they have different paths through the ride.
38:08SPEAKER- Wait, they have redundancy in their ride?
38:10SPEAKER- Yeah, well, 'cause like, look, if people come to the park
38:12SPEAKERto see Rise of the Resistance
38:14SPEAKERand the animatronic breaks this down for three hours,
38:16SPEAKERthen they have to have something else in place, right?
38:18SPEAKER- Fair, fair.
38:19SPEAKER- Apparently they also, if the lines are too long,
38:21SPEAKERthey skip some of the early portions of the ride
38:23SPEAKERthat are more stage setting and queuing
38:27SPEAKERand you just go straight to the ride part.
38:29SPEAKER- Just to move people through faster?
38:30SPEAKER- Just to move people through faster, I believe, yeah.
38:33SPEAKERBut it was, like it was a little intense,
38:36SPEAKERlike my daughter was a little nervous
38:37SPEAKERwhen the First Order people were yelling at you,
38:38SPEAKERshe's like, "I don't like this, this is scary."
38:40SPEAKER- How hard were the actors going for it?
38:43SPEAKER- They were fucking going at it hard, man.
38:45SPEAKERThey were like, like if I stepped off the red line
38:47SPEAKERto take a picture, they're like,
38:48SPEAKER"Get back on your red line, scum."
38:50SPEAKERAnd like, and yeah, it was, but then I think
38:54SPEAKERsomebody heard her say, "I'm a little freaked out, Dad,"
38:56SPEAKERand then they kind of cooled it with us.
38:57SPEAKER(laughing)
38:58SPEAKER'Cause of course, Disney always knows.
39:00SPEAKER- Hey, interactive.
39:01SPEAKER- Yeah, it was a little bit like,
39:04SPEAKERlike I generally don't like interactive theater stuff
39:06SPEAKERand it was a little bit on the edge for that for me.
39:09SPEAKERBut it was an interesting experience for sure.
39:13SPEAKER- Now, what is, I'm sure you didn't touch this at all,
39:15SPEAKERbut do you know anything about that kind of full weekend?
39:18SPEAKER- That's a Disney world.
39:19SPEAKER- Oh, is that a Disney world?
39:20SPEAKER- The Star Cruiser, yeah.
39:21SPEAKER- Okay, 'cause I mean, I don't know that you have an answer.
39:24SPEAKERI was gonna say though, like I don't,
39:26SPEAKERI'm a little surprised they built this at Disneyland
39:28SPEAKERto begin with 'cause there's so much more space at Disney.
39:31SPEAKEROr I've just always had the sense that Disney World
39:33SPEAKERwas the more trafficked and popular park.
39:36SPEAKER- I don't know, I don't have any idea
39:38SPEAKERwhat the traffic is like at the different ones.
39:40SPEAKERThis place was packed full.
39:44SPEAKERI think the Star Wars they're viewing as the future of the,
39:47SPEAKERlike these rides are clearly,
39:49SPEAKERthey've spent an incredible amount of time and money
39:51SPEAKERdeveloping them 'cause they're unlike anything
39:53SPEAKERI've seen anywhere else ever.
39:54SPEAKER- I wonder how they feel about having based
39:56SPEAKERthe entire thing or themed the entire thing
39:58SPEAKERwith the sequel films, considering they themselves
40:01SPEAKERhave de-emphasized those films now as hard as they can.
40:04SPEAKER- Well, so they're starting to put other stuff in now.
40:06SPEAKERLike originally, I think the pitch was
40:09SPEAKERthis is only gonna be the post goals, like the JJ trilogy.
40:13SPEAKERBut I think there's Mandalorian,
40:14SPEAKERI think there's stuff from the TV shows coming out now.
40:16SPEAKER- That was my guess is they'll kind of subtly
40:18SPEAKERstart dressing it with other stuff over time.
40:20SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, that only works if they go forward in time.
40:24SPEAKERI don't think you put High Republic stuff in there, right?
40:27SPEAKER- Probably not.
40:27SPEAKER- Yeah, anyway, maybe we'll see Ahsoka walking around
40:31SPEAKERwith head tentacles or something at some point.
40:34SPEAKERBut yeah, the Millennium Falcon ride
40:36SPEAKERwas the other big Star Wars ride.
40:37SPEAKERThere's only two Star Wars rides.
40:39SPEAKERThe other stuff that you do there is like
40:41SPEAKERa extended purchasing experience, like buying a lightsaber,
40:46SPEAKERor customizing your lightsaber, buying a droid,
40:48SPEAKERcustomizing your droid.
40:50SPEAKER- Oh, I didn't know you could do a droid.
40:51SPEAKERDid you do either of those?
40:51SPEAKER- I did not spend $200 on a lightsaber.
40:53SPEAKER- Man, that's like, I almost wish there was a reduced fee
40:57SPEAKERwhere you could just like go in and build it
40:59SPEAKERand play with it for 10 minutes and then give it back.
41:01SPEAKER'Cause like, I don't need a lightsaber in my house,
41:02SPEAKERbut I would like to mess around with that process.
41:05SPEAKER- That was precisely my reaction and my feeling.
41:08SPEAKERAnd I was like, no, I'm probably, I'm probably good.
41:12SPEAKERIf the kiddo, if we go back at some point
41:14SPEAKERand the kiddo is interested in Star Wars
41:16SPEAKERand she wants to do a lightsaber, we'll do a lightsaber,
41:17SPEAKERbut I'm okay.
41:20SPEAKERThe Millennium Falcon ride was much more
41:22SPEAKERof a traditional kind of theme park ride.
41:24SPEAKERYou get in, you get into like,
41:28SPEAKERbasically you get to go walk into the Millennium Falcon.
41:31SPEAKERYou get, there's a waiting area
41:33SPEAKERwhere you're assigned to color
41:34SPEAKERand you like get into the lobby,
41:37SPEAKERlike the area with the Jarek table
41:41SPEAKERand like Chewbacca's bed and all that stuff.
41:43SPEAKERAnd you can kind of hang out there and take pictures
41:45SPEAKERfor a little bit.
41:46SPEAKER- Wow, you know the name of the table.
41:47SPEAKERI'm impressed.
41:48SPEAKER- Well, I mean, we did a video tested
41:50SPEAKERwith the folks who recreated the hollow chests.
41:52SPEAKER- Oh, of course, yes.
41:54SPEAKER- For Force Awakens.
41:57SPEAKERBut yeah, and then you walk down a hallway
42:03SPEAKERand there's a bunch of different hallways
42:05SPEAKERand all of them lead to the Millennium Falcon cockpit.
42:07SPEAKERAnd you get into the kind of 40,
42:11SPEAKERyou literally get into a recreation
42:13SPEAKERof the Millennium Falcon cockpit,
42:14SPEAKERwhich I'm a fool 'cause I didn't take any pictures.
42:16SPEAKERAnd I was too busy looking around
42:17SPEAKERand poking buttons and stuff.
42:18SPEAKER- I mean, that's the thing to do, right?
42:19SPEAKERLike it's nice to have a memento,
42:21SPEAKERbut also like you kind of want to just live in the moment.
42:24SPEAKER- It was very cool to walk.
42:26SPEAKERI'm gonna go and tell you 12 year old me was exploding
42:31SPEAKER'cause I was walking around the Millennium Falcon cockpit.
42:33SPEAKER- Is it convincing like it's to scale
42:35SPEAKERand everything is kind of believable?
42:37SPEAKER- Yeah, like you sit down in chairs
42:39SPEAKERthat look like the chairs.
42:40SPEAKERThey're not like movie chairs.
42:43SPEAKERThey're like theme park ride chairs.
42:44SPEAKERYou have to buckle in, put the seatbelt on and all that.
42:48SPEAKERBut yeah, it was very believable.
42:51SPEAKER- Now, at any point before this,
42:53SPEAKERhave you seen an entire fully realized
42:56SPEAKERexternal Millennium Falcon or have you walked
42:59SPEAKERinto a building that this cockpit is contained inside?
43:01SPEAKER- Oh, so the Millennium Falcon's just sitting out
43:03SPEAKERin the middle of the parking,
43:04SPEAKERlike it's parked when you go in.
43:07SPEAKERSo it's a thing that you can take pictures with outside
43:12SPEAKERwhen you're walking around
43:13SPEAKERwithout going on the ride or anything.
43:15SPEAKER- Is it life-size?
43:16SPEAKERI mean, quote unquote life-size.
43:17SPEAKER- It's big, yeah.
43:18SPEAKERI'll send you some pictures.
43:19SPEAKER- Okay, does it have any interior at all or is it just a...
43:22SPEAKER- So the whole ride spins you around
43:24SPEAKERso that you feel like you're getting back
43:26SPEAKERon that Millennium Falcon.
43:27SPEAKERYou are absolutely not getting back on that Millennium Falcon.
43:29SPEAKER- Sure. - Yeah.
43:32SPEAKERSo you get in the cockpit, you sit down, they assign roles.
43:36SPEAKERSo Gina and my daughter were pilots.
43:39SPEAKERI was a gunner and we had two other people
43:40SPEAKERin the back that were engineers.
43:42SPEAKERAnd the pilots, one, it's like space team kind of.
43:46SPEAKER- Okay.
43:47SPEAKER- Like the pilots, one person goes left and right
43:48SPEAKERand the other person goes up and down.
43:51SPEAKER- Okay.
43:51SPEAKER- And the up and down person also gets
43:54SPEAKERto pull the hyperspace levers,
43:57SPEAKERwhich was, I'm gonna tell you, extreme jealousy
44:00SPEAKER'cause Gina was pulling the hyperspace levers.
44:02SPEAKER- That's the money shot, for sure.
44:04SPEAKER- But when you're flying, the 4D stuff is romping you around
44:08SPEAKERbased on the armature that the cockpit is on
44:12SPEAKERis moving based on their movements.
44:14SPEAKERAnd then the gunners have some buttons to press
44:16SPEAKERand then I don't know what the engineers did.
44:17SPEAKER- Did anyone at any point scream, "Play your class?"
44:22SPEAKER- No, nobody screamed, "Play your class."
44:25SPEAKERBut I'm gonna go and tell you, putting a nine-year-old
44:26SPEAKERand somebody who has a hard time with flight sim stuff
44:29SPEAKERwhere forward is down and back is up
44:33SPEAKERin charge of the flying the spaceship
44:35SPEAKERmeant that we smashed into a lot of stuff.
44:37SPEAKER- Mm-hmm, I'm surprised they don't let you self-assign,
44:40SPEAKERthough I'm surprised they assigned those roles out.
44:42SPEAKERIs that just for expediency,
44:43SPEAKERmaybe just to keep things moving
44:44SPEAKERso people aren't endlessly bringing their hands
44:47SPEAKERover what they get to play?
44:48SPEAKER- My guess is if we had five or six people,
44:50SPEAKERthey would have let us pick whatever we wanted,
44:51SPEAKERbut since we were a mixed group,
44:52SPEAKERthey just assigned so that there was less, you know,
44:55SPEAKERless drama with your friend for the next six minutes.
44:59SPEAKER- Yeah.
45:01SPEAKER- Yeah, so, and also, they definitely put the,
45:07SPEAKERthey definitely didn't put the kiddo
45:08SPEAKERin the having to pull the hyperspace thing,
45:10SPEAKER'cause I don't know what happens
45:11SPEAKERif you don't pull the hyperspace lever.
45:14SPEAKERSo, yeah, we smashed into a bunch of stuff.
45:16SPEAKERYou're assigned a score at the end?
45:18SPEAKER- Huh.
45:19SPEAKER- Like, it was weird, 'cause like, it's a really,
45:21SPEAKERit's a really incredible ride,
45:23SPEAKERbut it also feels like that technology,
45:25SPEAKERlike the, hey, have one person fly side to side,
45:28SPEAKERone person fly up and down,
45:29SPEAKERhave different people doing different things.
45:32SPEAKERIf put into the context of like
45:33SPEAKERa space team communications game
45:35SPEAKERversus a "Star Wars" spectacle game,
45:37SPEAKERwould be really, really fun.
45:39SPEAKERLike, imagine having a full-scale 5D space team,
45:43SPEAKERlike where the ride's thrashing around,
45:45SPEAKERyou're doing all sorts of cool stuff.
45:46SPEAKER- Oh, yeah.
45:47SPEAKER- Versus-
45:48SPEAKER- Having to run around a cockpit
45:49SPEAKERand like pull levers and hit buttons and-
45:51SPEAKER- Yeah.
45:52SPEAKER- Sounds awesome.
45:52SPEAKER- Yeah, the other thing about the ride
45:55SPEAKERis because you have to look at the controls
45:58SPEAKERand because you're looking at the buttons
45:59SPEAKERon the side and stuff like that,
46:02SPEAKERI didn't spend as much time looking
46:03SPEAKERat the actual stuff on the screen in front of the,
46:05SPEAKER'cause you know, you're flying around
46:06SPEAKERin front of a big, huge projection screen.
46:08SPEAKER- Right.
46:09SPEAKER- I didn't spend as much time looking at stuff on the screen
46:11SPEAKERas I was like looking to my left at a panel of five buttons
46:14SPEAKERto see which button I had to press.
46:16SPEAKER- Sure.
46:17SPEAKER- Which feels a little weird.
46:18SPEAKER- Yeah, is the projection screen
46:20SPEAKERis like set back from the cockpit?
46:22SPEAKERIt's not like part of the cockpit?
46:23SPEAKER- It's far enough back that you don't realize
46:25SPEAKERit's a projection screen
46:26SPEAKERif you're not really paying attention.
46:28SPEAKER- Sense of depth and kind of externality or whatever.
46:30SPEAKER- Yeah, and you can't see the edges of it at all, so.
46:33SPEAKER- You think, okay, I've never been to an escape room.
46:36SPEAKER- Yeah.
46:37SPEAKER- But the thing you're describing,
46:38SPEAKERthe kind of like fully realized, like tactile space team,
46:41SPEAKERlike is that just an escape room to begin with?
46:43SPEAKER'Cause I was gonna, the thing I was gonna ask is like,
46:45SPEAKERis I wonder if there's like some kind of market opportunity
46:49SPEAKERfor like something like an escape room,
46:52SPEAKERbut something that is much more explicitly like space team
46:55SPEAKERor like keep talking and nobody explodes.
46:58SPEAKERThat type of thing.
46:58SPEAKERLike that seems like somebody who put a lot of work
47:01SPEAKERinto really building out a lot of mechanical features
47:03SPEAKERyou could fiddle with, like would do pretty well
47:07SPEAKERwith something like that.
47:07SPEAKER- Most like entry-level escape rooms are really low budge.
47:11SPEAKERIt's like IKEA furniture that's been tarted up.
47:17SPEAKERThere's a couple of really, really high dollar,
47:19SPEAKERhigh impact ones.
47:21SPEAKERThere's one at the Palace of Fine Arts.
47:25SPEAKERI'm gonna, let me see what the company's called,
47:28SPEAKERI can't remember off the top of my head,
47:30SPEAKERbut they have three or four escape rooms,
47:32SPEAKERthree rooms there now, Houdini, Roosevelt and Edison
47:35SPEAKERat Palace Games.
47:37SPEAKERAnd they're exceptional, like really and truly incredible.
47:43SPEAKERAnd they do a lot of like Arduino driven,
47:49SPEAKERmicrocontroller driven, like wired in crazy,
47:52SPEAKERcrazy behind the scenes Disney style imagineer
47:56SPEAKERtype business there, but they don't do like moving rooms
47:59SPEAKERand stuff like that, that would be a bit much.
48:02SPEAKER- That sounds like that's veering pretty close
48:03SPEAKERto what I was thinking about anyway.
48:05SPEAKER- Yeah, so yeah, I think that there's a,
48:10SPEAKERI think that there's a, I would like,
48:14SPEAKERI would love to see them apply this technology
48:15SPEAKERto like a Buzz Lightyear game that is for people
48:20SPEAKERthat have to do space team shit for five minutes
48:22SPEAKERwhile they're in a cockpit, right?
48:25SPEAKERAnyway, I definitely felt like this was space team inspired
48:29SPEAKERas it was just so they, 'cause they wanted
48:30SPEAKERto give everybody interactive stuff to do.
48:32SPEAKER- You're just making me miss space team.
48:34SPEAKER- Space team's really good, it turns out.
48:38SPEAKERAnd that's pretty much it for, like we went on,
48:39SPEAKERthere's a linear accelerated rollercoaster
48:42SPEAKERat California Adventure that has a loop,
48:43SPEAKERwhich is crazy that there's a Disney rollercoaster
48:45SPEAKERthat has a loop, like it was a lot of,
48:50SPEAKERlike the whole thing was a lot of fun.
48:52SPEAKERThe thing that bummed me out is that,
48:55SPEAKERespecially in the first few hours you're in the park,
48:56SPEAKERyou're using your phone all the time
48:59SPEAKERbecause they've moved away from the FastPass thing
49:01SPEAKERwhere you go get the piece of paper, obviously,
49:02SPEAKER'cause it's 2022, to a thing that works on your phone.
49:06SPEAKERAnd I think you pay 20 bucks a person
49:08SPEAKERfor access to the Genie Plus feature,
49:10SPEAKERwhich is the FastPass type feature.
49:14SPEAKERThere's all sorts of rules that they absolutely,
49:16SPEAKERI'm sure intentionally don't explain clearly,
49:18SPEAKERlike every two hours you can add a new FastPass.
49:23SPEAKERSo you can only have one, they call it lightning lane,
49:26SPEAKERsorry, you only have one lightning lane active at a time,
49:31SPEAKERexcept the moment you cash one in
49:34SPEAKERwhile you're in the line for that ride,
49:36SPEAKERyou can sign up for your next one.
49:37SPEAKERYou can also sign up for one every two hours,
49:40SPEAKERwhether you're in, whether you use the last one or not.
49:45SPEAKERSo the upshot is you can get like a space mountain
49:48SPEAKERfor the end of the day when it gets long
49:50SPEAKERwhile you're waiting for something else
49:52SPEAKERand still have another ride
49:53SPEAKERif you're gonna go get dinner or something like that.
49:56SPEAKERThe Genie Plus thing also includes all the photos
49:58SPEAKERthat are taken on the rides.
50:00SPEAKERSo the thing where you like go down the space mountain,
50:03SPEAKEReverybody has the funny look on their face,
50:04SPEAKERand then you take the picture with the code
50:06SPEAKERon the end of the ride,
50:08SPEAKERyou can download those pictures later
50:09SPEAKERso you don't have to pay any extra money for those,
50:10SPEAKERwhich is nice.
50:12SPEAKER- Those are just delivered to you kind of automatically?
50:14SPEAKER- You have to know the code for your car.
50:18SPEAKERSo basically when you leave the ride,
50:19SPEAKERthere's a big wall of screens
50:21SPEAKERwith like 50 different pictures on them,
50:24SPEAKERand you find yourself on the screens,
50:26SPEAKERand then literally we just took a picture of those screens.
50:29SPEAKERSo we get the code, you type the code in the app later,
50:32SPEAKERand you can just download it.
50:33SPEAKER- But if you'd like to do that, you're kind of out of luck?
50:35SPEAKER- Well, if you miss the code, you're out of luck.
50:39SPEAKERThey also have photographers just in the park
50:41SPEAKERstanding there in front of like cool shots
50:44SPEAKERthat you can wait in line for and take a picture,
50:47SPEAKERand they do like, they'll superimpose some stuff.
50:51SPEAKERLike we did one in a car's land
50:53SPEAKERwhere they put a trophy in the kiddo's hands.
50:57SPEAKERWe didn't do a whole lot of that,
51:00SPEAKERbut the photographers were really,
51:01SPEAKERlike the ones that we did,
51:02SPEAKERthe photographers were really great.
51:03SPEAKERLike I was really pleasantly surprised,
51:05SPEAKERand the photos turned out really well,
51:07SPEAKERand they did a good job,
51:08SPEAKERlike getting the kids to be normal and all that stuff.
51:12SPEAKERThe, you have to almost have to,
51:18SPEAKERunless you want to wait in line for food,
51:21SPEAKERyou can also order food in advance from the park.
51:24SPEAKERSome food places don't even have the ability
51:27SPEAKERto take money anymore.
51:28SPEAKERSo you have to use the app to order
51:31SPEAKERin order to get food from some of the restaurants
51:33SPEAKERand to book reservations and stuff like that.
51:35SPEAKER- I guess it goes without saying
51:35SPEAKERto really do much of anything with this app,
51:38SPEAKERyou have to load payment information into it.
51:40SPEAKERIt just, let's see.
51:43SPEAKER- Or do I just say it probably just interfaces
51:44SPEAKERwith Apple Pay or Google, whatever, right?
51:47SPEAKER- I think it interfaces with Apple Pay,
51:50SPEAKERbut also it's how you buy your tickets for the park.
51:52SPEAKERSo you've already given them your credit.
51:54SPEAKERLike by the time you're in the park,
51:55SPEAKERthey already have everything they need to know
51:57SPEAKERabout you, Brad.
51:58SPEAKER- Of course, of course.
52:00SPEAKER- But like the benefit is you can look at wait times
52:03SPEAKERand stuff like that in the app.
52:05SPEAKERSo the wait times were wildly inaccurate in a lot of cases.
52:09SPEAKERSo sometimes it would be like there's a 15 minute wait time
52:11SPEAKERand then we went to Autopia and it would,
52:13SPEAKERwe sat in line for an hour and then we rode Autopia,
52:17SPEAKERwhich was not worth waiting in line for an hour or four.
52:20SPEAKER- What is Autopia?
52:21SPEAKER- Autopia is, it was called Green Light Go in Florida.
52:25SPEAKERIt's one of the early, it's one of the first day rides.
52:30SPEAKERSo you get in these gas powered go carts
52:32SPEAKERand can drive around this big track.
52:34SPEAKERThe challenge of it is when they launched,
52:36SPEAKERI don't think it had rails.
52:38SPEAKERSo you could just drive the carts anywhere
52:39SPEAKERand people were driving them out into like paths and shit.
52:42SPEAKER- Rules.
52:43SPEAKER- But now the problem is they're a bunch
52:45SPEAKERof really old go carts and they stall out all the time
52:48SPEAKERand like they'd never went really fast in the first place.
52:50SPEAKERBut it is like when you're a little kid, it's fun
52:52SPEAKER'cause you get to steer kind of within the confines
52:54SPEAKERof the rails, I guess.
52:55SPEAKER- It was part of Tomorrowland, it looks like.
52:57SPEAKER- It is still part of Tomorrowland.
52:59SPEAKERIt's next to the monorail.
53:00SPEAKER- Oh, that's a good name, Tomorrowland.
53:02SPEAKER- The problem with it is the queue is all up
53:05SPEAKERin the fume zone for the two stroke gas.
53:08SPEAKERLike they need to switch that thing to electric
53:10SPEAKERis my takeaway.
53:13SPEAKER- It's like it is these days powered by Honda.
53:15SPEAKER- Yeah, we saw Osmo.
53:17SPEAKEROsmo featured prominently in the queue experience
53:21SPEAKERfor that ride.
53:23SPEAKERSo yeah, like the phone thing was a mixed bag.
53:27SPEAKEROnce we got the hang of it, then you just remembered
53:29SPEAKERto the moment you cashed in one of your lightning lanes
53:32SPEAKERto like while you're waiting in the short line
53:34SPEAKERto fill in to sign up for the next one.
53:37SPEAKERAnd that let us ride like 20 things on the first day.
53:39SPEAKERLike we rode a shitload of rides.
53:42SPEAKER- That's pretty impressive.
53:42SPEAKERI mean, I was gonna say though, like this sounds
53:44SPEAKERlike you need some pretty damn good organizational skills.
53:49SPEAKERLike you need like a day planner or something.
53:50SPEAKERLike you really need to stay on top of this stuff
53:52SPEAKERto kind of optimize.
53:54SPEAKERIt sort of sounds like work, but.
53:56SPEAKER- It was a little bit, I mean, like I like playing games
54:00SPEAKERlike Factorio where you min-max stuff
54:02SPEAKERand it became very much that like, okay, if we go,
54:06SPEAKERthe lightning lane for this is an hour and a half from now
54:09SPEAKERand there's three rides with five minute waits
54:11SPEAKERbetween here and there.
54:11SPEAKERSo let's go ride those three rides on the way.
54:13SPEAKERAnd like, I mean, look, there's a, I don't know.
54:17SPEAKERI don't know if that's healthy.
54:18SPEAKERIt became part of the game for me.
54:23SPEAKERBut yeah, it was a fascinating experience.
54:27SPEAKERI didn't expect to, like I expected it to be
54:29SPEAKERa tolerable thing at best and it ended up being quite fun.
54:33SPEAKERAnd I mean, the one thing I will say is that the entire,
54:37SPEAKERwell, okay, so unlike Universal,
54:40SPEAKERwhich is designed to be a place that you come in
54:41SPEAKERand then buy a bunch of shit in a store
54:43SPEAKERthat looks like the Kwik-E-Mart
54:45SPEAKERor like Hogwarts or like the wand place, whatever.
54:51SPEAKER- Wait, hang on.
54:52SPEAKERIs there Simpsons stuff at Universal?
54:53SPEAKER- Oh yeah, there's a whole Simpsons land.
54:56SPEAKER- Wait, I'm trying to think what the,
54:57SPEAKERwhat was the corporate IP connection there
54:59SPEAKERthat allowed that to happen?
55:00SPEAKER'Cause obviously now Simpsons is part of Disney.
55:03SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm sure it was a,
55:04SPEAKERsomebody signed away theme park rights for Disney
55:06SPEAKERat 20th Century Fox at some point to NBC, right?
55:09SPEAKER- Sure.
55:10SPEAKER- But it's like, I had a crusty burger.
55:13SPEAKERI had a crusty burger.
55:14SPEAKERIt was as you would expect.
55:16SPEAKER- Was it a hamburger?
55:17SPEAKER- It was a hamburger with some cheese and pickles.
55:19SPEAKER- Was there literally anything novel about it?
55:20SPEAKER- There was crusty sauce on it.
55:21SPEAKERIt was wrapped in a crusty thing.
55:23SPEAKERAnd the person that I was, that I bought it from
55:26SPEAKERwas dressed like the crusty employees.
55:29SPEAKER- Okay, so did they have the same look
55:32SPEAKERof like gloom and despair on their face?
55:34SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.
55:35SPEAKER- Okay, okay, yeah.
55:36SPEAKERWhat does crusty sauce taste like?
55:38SPEAKER- It's like mayonnaise and pickle relish
55:40SPEAKERand ketchup mixed up probably.
55:42SPEAKER- So like a Big Mac.
55:43SPEAKER- It's a Thousand Island dressing if I had to guess.
55:45SPEAKER- Yeah, okay.
55:47SPEAKER- The fries were pretty good, I'll say.
55:49SPEAKERAnd they had the fancy Coke machine
55:51SPEAKERso you could get like whatever,
55:52SPEAKERyou get like a cherry vanilla orange Fanta
55:55SPEAKERif you wanted something that was horrifying.
55:57SPEAKER- Were the fries crusty?
56:00SPEAKER- No, they were crisp.
56:02SPEAKERThey were lightly salted.
56:03SPEAKERIt was a good fry experience, I'm gonna say.
56:05SPEAKERYeah, the Simpsons ride was underwhelmed.
56:10SPEAKERSo the Universal rides are all like 4D for the most part.
56:14SPEAKER- When you say 4D, I mean, can you define that?
56:16SPEAKER- Yeah, it's- - Just for the record.
56:17SPEAKER- You get in a seat, you buckle in the seat
56:21SPEAKERand then you watch a screen
56:22SPEAKERwhile the seat's like moving around and shaking.
56:24SPEAKERAnd then I think the 4D is that sometimes it squirts you
56:26SPEAKERor blasts you with a fan.
56:28SPEAKER- I see, of course.
56:30SPEAKERThe fourth dimension, water in the face.
56:32SPEAKER- Yeah, water and wind.
56:34SPEAKERThe studio tour ride,
56:35SPEAKERwhich I thought was gonna be really cheesy,
56:37SPEAKERis the thing famously noted in like the end of "Animal House"
56:42SPEAKERwhere one of the characters becomes a tour,
56:44SPEAKERUniversal Studios Hollywood,
56:45SPEAKERa tour guide in the Universal Studios Hollywood.
56:48SPEAKERYou get in this big, long bus thing with a bunch of seats
56:52SPEAKERand then like it is not just you
56:54SPEAKERdriving around the studio back a lot
56:56SPEAKERlooking at places where movies were made is what I'll say.
56:59SPEAKERLike they bring you into some dark ride stuff
57:01SPEAKERand apparently they buckle that thing onto like
57:04SPEAKERonto armatures and some shit happens.
57:07SPEAKERIt was fun, that was cheesy, but fun, I would say.
57:11SPEAKERAnd Vin Diesel talks about family.
57:13SPEAKERSo, you know, must be good at that at that point.
57:16SPEAKER- Of course.
57:18SPEAKER- But yeah, Universal seems much more like a place
57:20SPEAKERwhere you go and like the other thing
57:23SPEAKERis the "Harry Potter" ride, which I don't, is fraught
57:26SPEAKERfor a whole bunch of reasons,
57:27SPEAKERbut we weren't going to Universal
57:29SPEAKERand not riding the "Harry Potter" ride.
57:32SPEAKER- I mean, they've already got your money at that point.
57:34SPEAKER- Yeah, the "Harry Potter" ride
57:37SPEAKERis a 4D thing that's on rails.
57:39SPEAKERI think it replaced the old "Back to the Future" ride.
57:42SPEAKERSo basically you get into a cockpit
57:44SPEAKERthat's attached to the armature,
57:45SPEAKERbut then the armature is on a track.
57:49SPEAKERThe base of the armature is on a track
57:51SPEAKERand you get basically moved around this big life-size diorama
57:55SPEAKERand blasted in front of screens occasionally
57:57SPEAKERwhere you feel like you're writing a broomstick
57:59SPEAKERthe whole time, it was pretty cool.
58:01SPEAKERApparently it makes a lot of people motion sick.
58:04SPEAKERNobody in our party was affected though.
58:06SPEAKER- That's good.
58:07SPEAKERAnd the wand?
58:09SPEAKER- The wand, so you buy this expensive ass wand,
58:13SPEAKERit's an $80 wand, it's a pretty nice-
58:15SPEAKER- Oh, I see, I see how it is.
58:16SPEAKERYou can't build a lightsaber, but you will buy a wand.
58:19SPEAKER- Look, I didn't make these choices necessarily.
58:27SPEAKERThen there's spaces around.
58:29SPEAKERSo the thing about the "Harry Potter" land and Universal
58:31SPEAKERis that they've themed up a whole village
58:33SPEAKERoutside of the castle, right?
58:35SPEAKERSo you see the castle off in the distance,
58:36SPEAKERbut there's a village where there's food and drinks
58:39SPEAKERand you can buy robes and all of the merch is available.
58:46SPEAKERBut in the windows of the shops,
58:47SPEAKERthey have places that you can,
58:49SPEAKERlike there's little plaques on the ground
58:51SPEAKERand you can stand on them and cast magic spells
58:54SPEAKERwith the magical $80 wand.
58:57SPEAKERAnd then animatronic shit happens
58:59SPEAKERinside the windows of the shops.
59:02SPEAKERGonna go ahead and tell you, pretty cool.
59:03SPEAKERThe animatronic stuff that happens
59:04SPEAKERinside the windows of the shops, pretty good.
59:07SPEAKERLike they have quills that are writing themselves,
59:10SPEAKERthat are taking notes themselves
59:11SPEAKERwith nobody working on them.
59:13SPEAKERYou can make them stop and go and stuff like that.
59:15SPEAKERIt's like, it's goofy, it was really, really fiddly.
59:20SPEAKERBasically you have to tell the children
59:22SPEAKERto point the wand to the camera
59:23SPEAKERin order to make the wand work.
59:25SPEAKER- I see.
59:25SPEAKER- But then once they get the knack,
59:26SPEAKERyou see children just walking up to the window
59:28SPEAKERand doing the thing and the adults are like,
59:30SPEAKER"How the fuck did they do that?"
59:32SPEAKERNone of this ever works when we try it, so.
59:34SPEAKER- Do the wands have any kind of buttons
59:35SPEAKERor any other controls on them
59:37SPEAKERor is it just a pointing line of sight?
59:38SPEAKER- The wands have a reflector in the tip
59:41SPEAKERthat is detected or some sort of a thing
59:44SPEAKERthat is picked up by a camera in the window.
59:50SPEAKERAnd it worked in full daylight, so I mean, good on them.
59:56SPEAKERI think that's pretty much it.
59:57SPEAKER- And you keep the wand?
59:59SPEAKER- The wand is yours, God, I'd hope so.
1:00:01SPEAKER- $80?
1:00:02SPEAKER- $80 a day is kind of expensive.
1:00:05SPEAKEROh, Universal also has a thing that works like Genie Plus
1:00:07SPEAKERwhere you can skip the line.
1:00:10SPEAKERBoth of them you can only do once per day,
1:00:12SPEAKERlike you can only skip the line once per day.
1:00:15SPEAKERThe Universal one is really expensive
1:00:17SPEAKER'cause they price it based on demand.
1:00:20SPEAKERSo it was like, one day we were there, it was like 30 bucks
1:00:23SPEAKERand one day it was like $70 each.
1:00:30SPEAKERIt works much better at Universal because they don't,
1:00:32SPEAKERbecause the Genie Plus at Disney is 20 bucks per person
1:00:36SPEAKERso everybody who hits the park buys it
1:00:38SPEAKER'cause it's like, the whole park is a sunk cost fallacy,
1:00:41SPEAKERof course, I'm already in for this much,
1:00:44SPEAKERwhat's another 20, 30, 50, $100?
1:00:47SPEAKER- Well, but it's like, hey, we can pay 60 bucks
1:00:51SPEAKERand not wait two hours in line
1:00:52SPEAKERfor the rise of the resistance.
1:00:54SPEAKERI'm absolutely going to do that
1:00:56SPEAKERbecause the other option is to buy another day's park ticket
1:01:01SPEAKERwhich is way more expensive.
1:01:03SPEAKERSo yeah, basically just go and expect,
1:01:06SPEAKERif you're gonna go to this shed,
1:01:07SPEAKERexpect to be hung upside down by your ankles
1:01:09SPEAKERuntil they shake all of the money out of you.
1:01:11SPEAKER- Of course, this all sounds cool,
1:01:13SPEAKERbut I mean, this all sounds like what I would expect
1:01:17SPEAKERfrom a modern theme park experience.
1:01:18SPEAKERLike I haven't really heard anything
1:01:20SPEAKERthat was like truly mind blowing
1:01:21SPEAKERfrom an R&D technology standpoint,
1:01:23SPEAKERlike the use of mobile phone to lubricate the process
1:01:26SPEAKERsounds about like what I would expect,
1:01:28SPEAKERlike the evolution of the rides
1:01:30SPEAKERwith the Star Wars stuff in particular,
1:01:32SPEAKERlike they've added some stuff.
1:01:34SPEAKERNothing sounds wildly futuristic to me though
1:01:36SPEAKERfrom what you're describing.
1:01:37SPEAKER- I will, so I intentionally kind of under described
1:01:40SPEAKERthe Rise ride, like there were moments in there
1:01:43SPEAKERwhere I was like, holy shit, how have they done this?
1:01:45SPEAKER- Okay, that's cool.
1:01:46SPEAKER- Like there's a moment where you walk out of a shuttle
1:01:49SPEAKERand you're captured by the first order
1:01:51SPEAKERand you walk out and you're in this huge hangar
1:01:53SPEAKERand there's a bazillion stormtroopers there
1:01:55SPEAKERjust standing at attention,
1:01:56SPEAKERbut they're also kind of like idly moving around
1:01:58SPEAKER'cause they're kind of shit stormtroopers.
1:02:00SPEAKERThey're not just standing perfectly still.
1:02:02SPEAKERSo there's like 80 animatronic stormtroopers standing there.
1:02:05SPEAKER- Jeez, that's a lot.
1:02:07SPEAKER- Yeah, like, or maybe it's 80 cast members
1:02:09SPEAKERthat just stand there all day.
1:02:10SPEAKER- I don't know.
1:02:13SPEAKERIt's like there's a lot of that stuff.
1:02:20SPEAKERSo the thing that I will say is that there's a lot of stuff
1:02:22SPEAKERin the how they manage the actual rides,
1:02:24SPEAKERlike the queuing stuff and how they manage people
1:02:27SPEAKERgetting on and off of roller coasters and stuff like that
1:02:29SPEAKERis much better and less stressful than I was expecting.
1:02:35SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, honestly, if there's one area
1:02:37SPEAKERyou really want to see improvement,
1:02:38SPEAKERit's in the just getting you on and off stuff efficiently.
1:02:42SPEAKER- Well, but also they always have somebody there
1:02:44SPEAKERthat asks how many people are in your party
1:02:46SPEAKERand they make sure that you don't get split up
1:02:47SPEAKERwith your kids and stuff like that,
1:02:49SPEAKERwhich is what always happens at Six Flags
1:02:50SPEAKERand Great America and stuff like that.
1:02:52SPEAKERSo there's a real focus on making sure
1:02:57SPEAKERthat people have a good time in a way that isn't,
1:03:01SPEAKERit doesn't feel like it's run by carnies,
1:03:02SPEAKERI guess is what I'm saying.
1:03:04SPEAKER- Well, that's a plus.
1:03:05SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, it's nice.
1:03:09SPEAKERYeah, I don't know that.
1:03:10SPEAKERI'm sure I'll go back at some point.
1:03:12SPEAKERI'm not, I have not, I was a little worried when I got there
1:03:15SPEAKERthat I was gonna turn into a Disney person
1:03:16SPEAKERafter a brief exposure to the park.
1:03:18SPEAKERSo I think I'm cool.
1:03:21SPEAKERIt was fun, but it turns out I like having money also,
1:03:24SPEAKERso we won't be going back all that often.
1:03:26SPEAKERIf I lived in Anaheim, I would buy season passes, I think.
1:03:29SPEAKERIt would be cool to just zip out to the park
1:03:30SPEAKERand hang out for a little bit and then zip back home.
1:03:33SPEAKERAnyway, so that's Disneyland.
1:03:35SPEAKER- Well, hey, glad you had fun.
1:03:37SPEAKERAs always, it is fascinating to look and see
1:03:40SPEAKERhow those kind of complicated systems work
1:03:42SPEAKERbecause I would love, like I would love, love, love
1:03:47SPEAKERto be able to go and like see what it's like,
1:03:50SPEAKERwhat like what the operations center for Disneyland
1:03:52SPEAKERis like for the band, right?
1:03:54SPEAKER- Imagine that control room.
1:03:55SPEAKER- It's gotta be really cool.
1:03:57SPEAKER- I mean, there's gotta be like multiple dedicated rooms
1:04:00SPEAKERfor different stuff, right?
1:04:01SPEAKERLike park security and like kind of animatronic
1:04:03SPEAKERand motion stuff and like I'm sure those functions
1:04:05SPEAKERare pretty separated out, right?
1:04:07SPEAKER'Cause there's so much.
1:04:08SPEAKER- I bet like the animatronic and motion stuff is per ride.
1:04:10SPEAKER- Yeah, sure.
1:04:11SPEAKER- Like I bet there's like control rooms per ride,
1:04:13SPEAKERbut I bet the, my guess is that there's like some sort
1:04:15SPEAKERof overall park or area control center where they're like,
1:04:19SPEAKERokay, the ride, the light on Rise of the Resistance
1:04:22SPEAKERis getting long, let's, you know, open up something else
1:04:25SPEAKERon blah, blah, blah so we can suck people out of that area
1:04:28SPEAKERand into this area and yeah.
1:04:30SPEAKER- The Disneyland nerve center.
1:04:32SPEAKER- That's what I'd like to see.
1:04:35SPEAKERBut Brad, we've reached the point of the show
1:04:37SPEAKERwhere we thank our patrons.
1:04:38SPEAKER- We have, thank you, patrons.
1:04:39SPEAKER- Thank you, patrons.
1:04:40SPEAKERAs always, if you would like to find out
1:04:42SPEAKERhow you can support Brad and Wilma to tech pod,
1:04:44SPEAKERyou can go to patreon.com/techpod.
1:04:47SPEAKERAgain, that's patreon.com/techpod.
1:04:50SPEAKERAnd for as little as $2 a month,
1:04:53SPEAKERyou can become one of our fabulous patrons
1:04:55SPEAKERand gain access to the wonderful tech pod discord
1:04:57SPEAKERwhere you will find a bunch of beautiful nerds
1:04:59SPEAKERwho talk about, well, stuff like Disneyland
1:05:02SPEAKERand Linux ACL, ACLs, ACLs.
1:05:04SPEAKER- ACLs, ACLs, I haven't decided yet.
1:05:07SPEAKERLook, I mean, Jeremy said ACLs, I'm guessing he would know.
1:05:11SPEAKER- He did not have a beard or he didn't have much of a beard,
1:05:13SPEAKERbut it was gray, so.
1:05:14SPEAKER- That's true, that's true.
1:05:17SPEAKER- But yeah, you learn about Linux stuff,
1:05:19SPEAKERyou can learn about cameras,
1:05:20SPEAKERyou can learn about building stuff.
1:05:22SPEAKERThere's a bunch of different interesting things happening
1:05:24SPEAKERevery moment of every day in the tech pod discord.
1:05:26SPEAKER- PC hardware, there's a lot going on with PC hardware lately
1:05:30SPEAKERyou might have heard.
1:05:31SPEAKER- I mean, look, if you're building a computer right now,
1:05:34SPEAKERit's real confusing, it turns out.
1:05:36SPEAKERWhat should you get?
1:05:37SPEAKEREverybody looks like they have good stuff this time.
1:05:39SPEAKERI don't know.
1:05:40SPEAKERBut yeah, again, you can go to patreon.com/techpod
1:05:44SPEAKERand we've reached the point of the show
