151: A Dynamic Island Getaway

2022-09-11 · 1:27:46

00:00SPEAKERWell, that annual tradition has come again, it's give your money to Apple Day.

00:04SPEAKERSo my favorite part when I quit working at Tested in 2015 was that I never had to wait

00:10SPEAKERin line and deal with the internet bullshit or get in line at an Apple store on the morning

00:15SPEAKERat two o'clock in the morning or any of that stuff to get a new iPhone again.

00:19SPEAKERAnd here I am.

00:21SPEAKEROld habits die hard, right?

00:23SPEAKERI didn't realize there were that many permutations of the process over the years.

00:26SPEAKERI guess it did start with physically having to go get in line, right?

00:29SPEAKERIt used to be that on the Friday that it came out, you went and got in line at like, I mean,

00:33SPEAKERusually Gary or Norm and I would get in line at like 11 o'clock at night.

00:37SPEAKERAnd then we'd sit there in lawn chairs with sleeping bags until six o'clock in the morning

00:40SPEAKERwhen they brought coffee around, which was nice.

00:42SPEAKERLike the Apple store people would bring a Starbucks tray and hand people Danishes and

00:48SPEAKERcoffee, which was nice when you're spending 600 bucks on a phone.

00:50SPEAKEROh, Hey, you know, when you're like two and a half trillion dollar company, you could

00:53SPEAKERprobably afford a little coffee for people.

00:56SPEAKERYeah.

00:57SPEAKERYeah.

00:58SPEAKERAnd then I think the four S I think was the first time they did an on-sale thing, a digital

01:05SPEAKERthing, and then it just delivered I believe I could be wrong, but I think that was the

01:10SPEAKERyear we did the first October cast and they arrived while we were midway through that

01:17SPEAKERshow.

01:18SPEAKEROh, what a great stunt for your 24 hour podcast, like I had new iPhones.

01:21SPEAKERIt was fantastic.

01:22SPEAKERIt killed a whole hour.

01:23SPEAKERIt was great.

01:26SPEAKERA whole fascinating hour of three dudes, just heads down, staring at the phone and occasionally

01:31SPEAKERsaying cool.

01:32SPEAKERWell, look, it was mostly Gary and me trying to get Siri to say curse words for a pretty

01:38SPEAKERgood length of time.

01:39SPEAKERThat's good content.

01:40SPEAKERAnd then, yeah, but, but so anyway, I got up this morning at five Gina did the same

01:43SPEAKERthing cause we're both gluttons.

01:45SPEAKERWe're going on a trip at the end of the month and we want to have we wanted to have the

01:49SPEAKERnew cameras for the trip, which makes sense.

01:52SPEAKERWhat phones are you on now?

01:53SPEAKERI don't want to talk about it, but I have a 13 pro shows.

01:58SPEAKEROkay.

01:59SPEAKERSo she's on the upgrade thing.

02:00SPEAKERSo she, she gets the new phone every year, right?

02:02SPEAKERLike, like without like no muss, no fuss, like just they ship it automatically or there's

02:07SPEAKERnever no muss, no fuss cause you have to make choices and you have to do a contract and

02:11SPEAKERall that stuff.

02:12SPEAKERI mean, that's the, God, I forget how it works.

02:13SPEAKERIs that the, that's the pay as you go and then you can just upgrade to the next phone

02:16SPEAKERby just saying, give me the new phone and then you keep paying.

02:19SPEAKERSee there are three plans.

02:21SPEAKEROh boy.

02:22SPEAKERYeah.

02:23SPEAKERSo if you have an apple card, you know, their credit card, then you can just finance it

02:27SPEAKERfor 20, 25 to $60 or $80 a month or something, depending on which phone you buy.

02:35SPEAKERIf you have a minus, whatever you trade in, right?

02:38SPEAKERSo they'll finance whatever the difference between the trade in and the cost of the phone,

02:41SPEAKERno interest for the two years.

02:44SPEAKERThey also do that with a citizens one loan.

02:46SPEAKERThat's basically the same exact deal, but you don't have to have an apple card.

02:49SPEAKERAnd then there's the iPhone upgrade plan, which is kind of good.

02:54SPEAKERIf you didn't have a phone to trade in when you were doing it and it's, it's, it's financing

03:01SPEAKERthe full price, but you, every 12 months, you basically can hit the button and get a

03:05SPEAKERnew phone.

03:06SPEAKERRight.

03:07SPEAKERAnd then you're starting the whole process over.

03:08SPEAKERNo, no, it's just, it's just never ending.

03:10SPEAKERSo if you do it for 24 months in a row, then you get the phone for free.

03:14SPEAKERI don't think the iPhone upgrade plan is actually, I think it's a bad deal.

03:17SPEAKERI mean, setting aside the math, I'm sure we could do the math and like say, yes, this

03:22SPEAKERis worth it.

03:23SPEAKERNo, it's not like just psychologically.

03:25SPEAKERThe idea that you would never actually fully own your phone is just a little.

03:30SPEAKERIf you, if you are upgrading the phone every year, so, so, okay.

03:35SPEAKERSo the trade in plus the financing is what I have traditionally done just to not pay

03:40SPEAKER$1,200 once a year and then get $600 back a few weeks later when you would trade in

03:44SPEAKERthe old phone the, the, the upgrade plan kind of made sense because it used to be like a

03:53SPEAKERfast pass through and you got Apple care for free.

03:56SPEAKERThat was the benefit of doing the upgrade plan.

03:58SPEAKEROh, okay.

03:59SPEAKERThat's a pretty good value add.

04:01SPEAKERYeah.

04:02SPEAKERThe, the, it, it feels less good to me and it doesn't seem like it accommodates trade

04:06SPEAKERin value when you jump into the plan.

04:09SPEAKERSo I don't understand exactly how it works.

04:11SPEAKERIt like the math didn't, when I, when I did that, I was like, I'm going to keep doing

04:14SPEAKERthe financing thing or just pay the $600 because it doesn't seem like it's saving me anything

04:18SPEAKERto do the upgrade plan at this point and I'll pay for Apple care or maybe just buy a case.

04:24SPEAKERI don't know.

04:25SPEAKERBut yeah, so I got up at five cause Apple hates people on the west coast.

04:29SPEAKERYeah.

04:30SPEAKERWhy do, why do they do it so early?

04:31SPEAKERI think so that they thin out the number of people who are going to sign up so that they

04:35SPEAKERcan have more of a jet, but it was a complete shit show today.

04:38SPEAKERIt was, it was maybe the, like they've done this a lot over the years and this is the

04:42SPEAKERfirst time I've ever had problems with online ordering that were substantial and not related

04:48SPEAKERto a carrier.

04:49SPEAKERLike, like for one, the store page had the, Hey, we're, we're ready.

04:54SPEAKERWe're going to be ready at 5am for you to order your phone until about five, 10.

04:58SPEAKERLike I was looking on Twitter and seeing people posting their receipts and like, Oh, I can

05:02SPEAKERpick up my phone next Friday.

05:04SPEAKERGreat.

05:05SPEAKERAnd by the time that went away, I put my order in and got to the page where Verizon was like,

05:15SPEAKERHey, we need to confirm your stuff so you can activate this phone on day one.

05:18SPEAKERAnd then that stalled out and failed 15 times in a row or something.

05:22SPEAKERAnd you know, like this is, I realize first worldiest of first world problems.

05:27SPEAKERLike this is complete asshole level complaining about stuff.

05:30SPEAKEREspecially now that you don't have a professional obligation here.

05:32SPEAKERI kind of do.

05:33SPEAKERWe talk about it here.

05:35SPEAKERIt's a topic.

05:36SPEAKERI don't know that this podcast makes us professionals, but go on.

05:39SPEAKERI mean, I'm a, I'm a, it's my last desperate grasp of professionality.

05:45SPEAKERYou're a recovering tech professional.

05:47SPEAKERYeah.

05:48SPEAKERSo anyway, I went through multiple variations and transitioned from, Hey, you can order

05:57SPEAKERit.

05:58SPEAKERIt'll arrive on the 16th by mail to, Hey, if you go pick it up at Stone's down, it'll

06:02SPEAKERbe there on the 16th to Hey, if you go pick it up at union square, it'll be there on the

06:06SPEAKER16th to Hey, if you drive down to court of Madera, it'll be there on the 16th to man,

06:12SPEAKERit's coming in October dog.

06:15SPEAKERAnd and so I hit the button and then I realized that there, the problem I had was that with

06:23SPEAKERcolor choice that I made of the phone that I picked.

06:25SPEAKERSo I picked the max in silver, which apparently was either very popular.

06:30SPEAKERThey made very few of, and if I had picked any of the other maxes, any of the other color

06:37SPEAKERmaxes, I could have picked it up on the 16th, but of course you can't cancel your order

06:41SPEAKERonce it's in the pipeline because a high volume on launch day.

06:46SPEAKERSo I'll have a phone in October, I guess, probably my guess is that it's probably going

06:50SPEAKERto arrive about the time that we leave on the trip.

06:53SPEAKERSo it'll sit on the front porch for a few days, unless one of my neighbors is around.

06:56SPEAKERSo not feeling great, not feeling great.

07:00SPEAKERLook, man, you feed the machine.

07:02SPEAKERSometimes you get chewed up along with it.

07:05SPEAKERThis was not the desired outcome.

07:26SPEAKERWelcome to Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod.

07:37SPEAKERI'm Will.

07:38SPEAKERI am Brad.

07:39SPEAKERHello.

07:40SPEAKERWow.

07:41SPEAKERNo, no contractions today.

07:42SPEAKERReally formal ended up.

07:43SPEAKERYou get that NPR voice.

07:44SPEAKERI watched, I watched a little bit of Next Generation the last couple of nights.

07:47SPEAKERMaybe, maybe I've just got data on the brain.

07:49SPEAKERYeah.

07:50SPEAKERHe doesn't use contractions.

07:51SPEAKERDoes he?

07:52SPEAKERI don't think.

07:53SPEAKERHmm.

07:54SPEAKERThat's part of one of the chips he gets later, isn't it?

07:55SPEAKERYeah.

07:56SPEAKERI think that might be something that they sort of retcon that they kind of went back

08:00SPEAKERand forth on.

08:01SPEAKERLike he's, we don't need to get into a Star Trek discussion, but he, he is weirdly like

08:05SPEAKERquasi human in some ways in the first couple of seasons before they decided like, Oh, he's

08:09SPEAKERjust a computer on legs.

08:10SPEAKERWell, I mean, I, I thought that that was a lore, wasn't that a lore, like the, how they

08:14SPEAKERdistinguished lore one time was he used contractions.

08:16SPEAKERI think you might be right.

08:18SPEAKERI think it might be a case where it's like, you can find three or four episodes where

08:21SPEAKERthey slipped up and he did or something along those lines, but like there's a lot of weird

08:25SPEAKERstuff in those first two seasons of him like smirking and having some like weird little

08:30SPEAKERhuman traits here and there.

08:32SPEAKERAnyway.

08:33SPEAKERWell, he's constantly working on his program.

08:34SPEAKERI mean, Brad, it's clear.

08:35SPEAKERIt's very clear that, you know, besides he's fully functional, so, um, Hey, it was Apple

08:41SPEAKERweek this week.

08:42SPEAKERBrad was, um, the, the appliest week of the year we had, we had some Courtland's down

08:47SPEAKERhere.

08:48SPEAKERI had a Fuji earlier this week.

08:49SPEAKEROh man.

08:50SPEAKERWe have had to, I'm guessing they're probably, they're probably red delicious.

08:53SPEAKEROh man.

08:54SPEAKERThey're red.

08:55SPEAKERThey're probably delicious.

08:56SPEAKERHave they been sitting in the kitchen for like a month?

08:59SPEAKERThey're probably not going to be that delicious these days.

09:02SPEAKERIf they're like red delicious, best picked right off the tree and jam straight into your

09:06SPEAKERface hole.

09:07SPEAKERApples seem to last a while though.

09:09SPEAKERI need some more, some more than others.

09:11SPEAKERMy, my, my like, what's your ranking of apples?

09:14SPEAKERWhat's your, what's your number one apple?

09:15SPEAKERThis is pathetic because I literally come from the land of apples.

09:18SPEAKERI don't know how it was where you're at.

09:21SPEAKERI had an apple tree in my backyard.

09:22SPEAKEROkay.

09:23SPEAKERI'm going to let me go.

09:24SPEAKERLike literally we have an apple festival where I live.

09:26SPEAKERLike there was so much apple based agriculture out there.

09:30SPEAKERI've, I've been to your apple festival.

09:32SPEAKEROh really?

09:33SPEAKERI had pressed cider in the city of your youth.

09:36SPEAKERWe never went.

09:37SPEAKERI can't remember a single time I actually went to the apple festival.

09:42SPEAKERAnyway, I given all of that, it's pathetic that I can't like, I couldn't tell you a granny

09:47SPEAKERSmith from a...

09:48SPEAKERWow.

09:49SPEAKERNone.

09:50SPEAKERThat's about it.

09:51SPEAKERRed delicious and granny Smith, that's Fuji, honey, honey, crisp, Cortland for me, probably

09:56SPEAKERwait are honey, Crispin, Cortland, not separate.

09:58SPEAKERThey are separate honey.

10:00SPEAKERFuji's number one with a bullet, honey, crisp, and then Cortland misunderstood.

10:04SPEAKERI like a Cortland Fuji, huh?

10:06SPEAKERFuji has a real nice sweetness to it.

10:08SPEAKERThey're crisp.

10:09SPEAKERThey stay firm.

10:10SPEAKERThey last a long time.

10:11SPEAKERThey, they'll sit on the counter and age well, and it has just a really light sweetness with

10:17SPEAKERa little bit of Tang.

10:18SPEAKERIt's good.

10:19SPEAKERApple.

10:20SPEAKERShould we do an agriculture episode sometime?

10:21SPEAKERWhat's the, what's the thing I was just, I found out recently that a ton of things like

10:25SPEAKERapples are basically like clones.

10:27SPEAKEROh yeah.

10:28SPEAKEREvery banana.

10:29SPEAKERWell, there's several species of bananas, but almost everything that you get commercially

10:32SPEAKERproduced is the same is a clone of the, of the same, same banana.

10:37SPEAKERWe've talked to, I feel like we've talked about the banana blight of the fifties that

10:41SPEAKERfinished the gross Michelle.

10:43SPEAKERWe probably have, but I thought, I think I was specifically reading about apple trees.

10:46SPEAKERLike the, the idea is essentially that like they, the seeds that come from the plants

10:50SPEAKERthat are grown can't be used for subsequent generations of crops.

10:53SPEAKERLike they have to keep going back to the same generation because like, I guess it's just

10:57SPEAKERlike natural variations, right?

10:58SPEAKERLike they want a predictable product.

11:00SPEAKERAnd so the, yeah.

11:01SPEAKERYeah.

11:02SPEAKERThe, the, the same thing happened with like chickens are weird too because in the, in

11:05SPEAKERthe pre pre industrial farming, there were dozens to hundreds of varieties of chickens,

11:11SPEAKERyou know, like, like breeds of chickens.

11:15SPEAKERFrom a ranking of apples to ranking of chickens.

11:17SPEAKERWhat do you got?

11:18SPEAKERI don't know the chickens, man, but, but there's a guy in Oklahoma or Kansas.

11:22SPEAKERI can't remember where that collects the, like he, he has a chicken collection and he

11:27SPEAKERhas the different species of chickens, different breeds of chickens that are all bred for different

11:33SPEAKERthings.

11:34SPEAKERSo,

11:35SPEAKEROh boy, I've got a list here.

11:36SPEAKERSo I guessed the Leghorn.

11:37SPEAKERYeah.

11:38SPEAKERYeah.

11:39SPEAKEROf course.

11:40SPEAKERBecause of foghorn.

11:41SPEAKERLeghorn.

11:42SPEAKERThat's right.

11:43SPEAKERI say, ah, sir.

11:44SPEAKERWow.

11:45SPEAKERLet's see.

11:46SPEAKERThere's a lot of different kinds of chickens too.

11:47SPEAKERThere's the Plymouth rock chicken.

11:49SPEAKERThere's the silky.

11:50SPEAKERThere's the Sussex, the lumen Brown, the Rhode Island red.

11:56SPEAKERPeople have a lot of pride in their chicken.

11:58SPEAKERWow.

11:59SPEAKERThat was just a tiny list that I have now expanded to find the, Oh my God, do there

12:03SPEAKERare dozens.

12:04SPEAKERIt's like dogs, Japanese Bantam, the frizzle, the naked neck, the Amrock, the New Hampshire.

12:11SPEAKERThere are as many of them as there are like, like it is, it is literally they've been domesticated

12:16SPEAKERfor so long.

12:17SPEAKERThere's so many variants and some of them are like made for meat and some of them made

12:20SPEAKERfor egg laying and some were made for like small egg laying and some were made for sturdy

12:24SPEAKERshell egg laying and like, yeah, it's crazy.

12:27SPEAKERSo if only they could breed a chicken that could lay an iPhone 14 pro max, am I right?

12:33SPEAKERSilver please.

12:34SPEAKERSilver.

12:35SPEAKERThat was my, that was my downfall was silver.

12:37SPEAKERHad I chosen anything other than silver, I'd be fine.

12:40SPEAKERHad to go for vanity.

12:41SPEAKERI've got it in front of me.

12:42SPEAKERI'm not seeing.

12:43SPEAKEROh, I have to pick a model.

12:44SPEAKERYeah.

12:45SPEAKERLook, there's a whole, there's a flow.

12:46SPEAKERThe flow broke multiple times along the way.

12:48SPEAKERThere's literally a color called deep purple this time.

12:50SPEAKERYeah.

12:51SPEAKERIt's called the Brad.

12:52SPEAKERYou're going to get a new phone.

12:53SPEAKERAren't you?

12:54SPEAKERIt's pretty good.

12:55SPEAKERI both love purple and also think that's a funny name.

12:57SPEAKERYeah.

12:58SPEAKERI'm surprised they didn't have a Prince song during the keynote, but anyway, we're talking

13:01SPEAKERabout Apple stuff this week because it was a, it was kind of like an unusually interesting

13:07SPEAKERApple event this year, I would say.

13:10SPEAKERThey did a new AirPods, a new AirPod pros, rather second gen AirPod pros, two, well three

13:17SPEAKERnew watches, I guess, series eight, the Apple watch ultra and a new SE.

13:23SPEAKERThat's kind of a minor upgrade.

13:26SPEAKERAnd then a bunch of new phones, new iPhone 14s, iPhone 14 plus and iPhone 14 pros, both

13:33SPEAKERin normal size and the maximum and, and, and like some cool stuff in there.

13:39SPEAKERSo we'll talk about it.

13:40SPEAKERWhere do you want to start?

13:41SPEAKERBrad?

13:42SPEAKERYou got, you got questions?

13:43SPEAKERYou put AirPods pro at the top of this note stock and I'm not sure.

13:47SPEAKERI think it's the most minor thing we can talk about it in about four minutes.

13:50SPEAKEROkay.

13:51SPEAKERJust get it out of the way.

13:52SPEAKERYeah.

13:53SPEAKERThey've got better battery and touch control for volume and they say that the noise cancellation

13:57SPEAKERis better.

13:58SPEAKEROh, various aspects of the, of the product are in generically better in some vague way.

14:04SPEAKERYou don't say, well, so the first ones don't have a touch control for volume, which is

14:08SPEAKERpretty annoying.

14:09SPEAKERSorry.

14:10SPEAKERIt's better noise canceling, which is, I mean, I'm sure you can absolutely quantify how much

14:14SPEAKERnoise canceling is taking place, but just saying better noise canceling is like, of

14:18SPEAKERcourse.

14:19SPEAKERThey said it was two times better, which is, seems like a really difficult, like it's not

14:23SPEAKERan absolute unit unless they're, unless they're filtering out half the sound that they would

14:28SPEAKERhave before.

14:29SPEAKERRight.

14:30SPEAKERIt seems like the big thing is they have microphones inside the ear holes now so they can hear

14:33SPEAKERwhat you're hearing, which lets them do some more seemingly more advanced math.

14:38SPEAKERAs opposed to what sound is only reaching the outside of the package.

14:41SPEAKERYeah.

14:42SPEAKERSo they compare what's on the outside versus what they're canceling out and yada yada magic

14:46SPEAKERmath happens.

14:47SPEAKERReal quick.

14:48SPEAKERIs there even a product on the market just called AirPods now?

14:50SPEAKERLike they are still shipping both versions.

14:52SPEAKERYeah.

14:53SPEAKERSo they have two old AirPods.

14:54SPEAKERThey have the AirPods 2 and the AirPods 3.

14:57SPEAKERThe AirPods 3 don't have active noise canceling, but they do have, no, they're still kind of

15:04SPEAKERjust tuck into your ears like AirPods always have.

15:10SPEAKERI can't remember the difference, the 3s have smaller stumps, I think.

15:16SPEAKERAnd they do something that the other ones don't.

15:22SPEAKERI don't remember.

15:23SPEAKERI have to look on the matrix here.

15:25SPEAKERWait, these AirPods are out of the, are from the matrix?

15:30SPEAKERYeah, they are in the matrix.

15:31SPEAKERThey have longer battery life and they have the spatialized audio.

15:37SPEAKERSo that's the difference.

15:39SPEAKERSo the AirPods 3rd generation are sweat and water resistant and they have like the chip

15:44SPEAKERthat lets them do the UWB ultra wide band space tracking.

15:49SPEAKEROther than that, they're more or less the same.

15:53SPEAKERYou still use that?

15:54SPEAKERDo you still use the spatial?

15:55SPEAKERI know you seem pretty hot on it when you first got those things.

15:57SPEAKERI like it.

15:58SPEAKERYeah.

15:59SPEAKERIt's good for watching movies.

16:01SPEAKERIt's a little weird for music, I find.

16:04SPEAKERIt also impacts the battery life pretty substantially.

16:06SPEAKEROh, okay.

16:07SPEAKERThat's probably a deal breaker.

16:08SPEAKERIt just seems like it would be kind of gimmicky after a while.

16:11SPEAKERSo I put it in the, I put it like if I'm laying in, if I'm taking a nap and I put on like

16:17SPEAKERmy sleepy playlist with the chill ambient and the noise canceling, I leave it on because

16:22SPEAKERit's kind of nice to hear like all the stuff chirping all around me and stuff.

16:26SPEAKERIf I'm sitting in the living room watching a movie, I definitely leave it on because

16:30SPEAKERit's not, because you get a pretty good soundscape.

16:32SPEAKERIt's I don't, I wouldn't use it if I was just walking around listening to music in the downtown

16:36SPEAKERor whatever.

16:37SPEAKERRight.

16:38SPEAKERSo the other thing about this is that they are saying that the transparency mode is better,

16:41SPEAKERwhich is a nice thing for people with in-ear noise blocking headphones.

16:46SPEAKERSo like I don't like walking around the city with, with in-ears in so that I can't hear

16:51SPEAKERwhat's going on around me because I don't like somebody sneaking up on me and whacking

16:54SPEAKERme on the back of the head with a sock full of quarters or something.

16:58SPEAKERAnd right now the current transparency mode on the ones, on the first gen ones is a little

17:04SPEAKERbit noisy.

17:05SPEAKERIt tends to pick up everything kind of at a high level.

17:09SPEAKERThey're saying that they filter out the annoying noises better, like buses and stuff like that.

17:12SPEAKERSo presumably you'll be able to hear the person sneaking up behind you to blackjack you, but

17:16SPEAKERmaybe you should look extra careful when you're looking around and make sure you don't get

17:19SPEAKERnailed by the bus.

17:20SPEAKERDon't get hit by a bus.

17:21SPEAKERYeah.

17:22SPEAKERDon't get hit by a bus.

17:23SPEAKERThat's the official tech pod recommendation.

17:27SPEAKERThe other thing that is super smart is that they added a lanyard loop and a speaker to

17:32SPEAKERthe case.

17:33SPEAKERSo you can make the case beep when you've lost it and can't find it.

17:36SPEAKEROkay.

17:37SPEAKERI was going to ask when I saw this in the notes, I was like, what exactly is the use

17:39SPEAKERcase for this?

17:40SPEAKERSo, I mean, whatever I use, find my iPhone to ping my iPhone in the apartment yesterday

17:44SPEAKERbecause I couldn't find the phone.

17:46SPEAKERSo I get that part, but yeah, so, so this literally lets you use, find my iPhone to

17:49SPEAKERping the ping, the air pod case.

17:52SPEAKERYou've always been able to do it with the air pods, but they won't do it when they're

17:55SPEAKERinside the case cause they're off then.

17:58SPEAKERSo if you, so basically if you, if you lose the air pods and there's there in the case,

18:03SPEAKERyou have to walk around with the phone doing the, am I near or far?

18:05SPEAKERAnd then the Bluetooth thing says, Oh, you're within like three feet and you have to then

18:08SPEAKERdig through the sofa cushions to find it.

18:10SPEAKERThat sounds like kind of a fun scavenger hunt.

18:12SPEAKERIt is.

18:13SPEAKERIt is a little bit fun.

18:14SPEAKERI would say.

18:15SPEAKERIs that, I'm sorry, is that, is that the only intended use for that speaker?

18:19SPEAKERLike when I, when I saw that, I mean, you know, like, like kind of little tiny portable

18:22SPEAKERBluetooth speakers are still a thing that people buy.

18:24SPEAKERI didn't know if this was too small for that.

18:26SPEAKERYeah.

18:27SPEAKERYeah.

18:28SPEAKERThe you can scan your ears with the iPhone's death camera now.

18:34SPEAKERYou can do that for like when I, when I installed iOS 16, it asked me to do that for my pro

18:39SPEAKERones and I did it.

18:40SPEAKERI couldn't tell any difference.

18:41SPEAKERSo truly Mark Cerny ahead of his time.

18:43SPEAKERNow here's Apple.

18:44SPEAKERYeah.

18:45SPEAKERHere's one of the world's most valuable companies now getting in on the ear shape economy.

18:50SPEAKERI had to move my hair out of the way of my ear.

18:51SPEAKERIt can play.

18:52SPEAKERIt was like, Hey, we don't have it.

18:53SPEAKERThis is an unobstructed view of your ear.

18:55SPEAKERI wonder if they're actually scanning or if they're just comparing the shape to ears that

18:58SPEAKERthey've modeled and they modeled enough years that they're like, Oh yeah, you have, you

19:01SPEAKERhave your 173.

19:05SPEAKERSo that's what we'll do.

19:06SPEAKERThere are only so many year shapes in the world.

19:08SPEAKERThe fact that this supports Bluetooth 5.3 is I don't know if that's a big deal, which

19:13SPEAKERjust highlights the fact that we're overdue for a Bluetooth episode.

19:16SPEAKERYou mean our Bluetooth series, our 18 episode series, the entire history of Bluetooth and

19:22SPEAKERparticularly particular emphasis on Bluetooth audio critics, the Bluetooth legacy.

19:27SPEAKERWe're going to do, we're just going to devote 2023 to Bluetooth.

19:30SPEAKERIt's going to be the year of Bluetooth 52 episodes back to back to back.

19:33SPEAKERWe've been trying to do more topic episodes and then Bluetooth came up and now I'm kind

19:37SPEAKERof just intimidated.

19:38SPEAKERLike normally it'd be like, Oh, we should do a Bluetooth episode.

19:40SPEAKERIt's Oh, Hey, we have a topic in our pocket that we should just do, but yes, tackling

19:45SPEAKERBluetooth.

19:46SPEAKERBrad, is that a topic in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

19:49SPEAKERLet's just move on.

19:50SPEAKERIt doesn't support, they don't support Apple lossless.

19:52SPEAKERSo I think the only, and I can't remember if the max does, none of the other AirPods

19:56SPEAKERsupport Apple loss, lossless music.

19:58SPEAKERI don't know that I care about that personally cause I'm not going to buy music that's at

20:01SPEAKERlossless from Apple.

20:03SPEAKERIt does support all the Dolby stuff that Apple music supports now.

20:07SPEAKERAnd I would quantify this as somebody who loves their AirPod pros.

20:11SPEAKERThis is firmly in the, when I need to replace my AirPod pros, I will get whatever the current

20:15SPEAKERversion is, but I'm not like dropping the old ones and running out to get something

20:19SPEAKERnew.

20:20SPEAKERBut when you, when you said the words AirPods pro max, I had to go, wait, is it pro max

20:24SPEAKERor just max?

20:25SPEAKERSorry.

20:26SPEAKERIt's just max.

20:27SPEAKERIt's just AirPod max.

20:28SPEAKERIt's the headphones.

20:29SPEAKERI had to go Google that and remind myself what that was like.

20:30SPEAKEROh right.

20:31SPEAKERThey do ship a full size over year pair of headphones, a $500 extremely overpriced pair

20:36SPEAKERof headphones.

20:37SPEAKERYes.

20:38SPEAKERI'm good.

20:39SPEAKERI'm good.

20:40SPEAKERI, I'm still using my, what are they JLab?

20:44SPEAKERYeah.

20:45SPEAKERI'm still, I'm still using the $30 pair of JLab sport, athletic Bluetooth headphones

20:49SPEAKERthat I bought five years ago.

20:51SPEAKERThe cord actually just the installation just split this week, slap, slap, slap some electrical

20:58SPEAKERtape on there.

20:59SPEAKERSo I was going to say the thing about, sorry, in my defense, I wear them for exercise.

21:04SPEAKERThere's are not intended to be nice headphones like, yeah, I theoretically, I want crappy

21:08SPEAKERheadphones for that particular use case.

21:10SPEAKERBut anyway, well, so the thing I was going to say about the AirPods in general is that

21:16SPEAKERthey are the more Apple stuff you have in your home, the better they are for you.

21:22SPEAKEROh sure.

21:23SPEAKERSo like if you don't have Apple TVs, probably not great.

21:26SPEAKERLike like the, but the ability to lay in bed or listen to the living room and watch TV

21:30SPEAKERwithout making noise that bothers everybody else in the house or other people sitting

21:33SPEAKERin the same room even is really, really nice.

21:37SPEAKERSure.

21:38SPEAKERAnd, and you just bump them seamlessly using your phone from device to device.

21:41SPEAKERIt's kind of magic.

21:42SPEAKERThese also will do two connections at once.

21:44SPEAKERSo if you get a call, if you're listening to music on your Mac or your iPad or your

21:48SPEAKERwatch or whatever, and you get a call, it'll switch over immediately to the call without

21:52SPEAKERyou having to do anything, which is, which is, it's unclear to me if that's a software

21:55SPEAKERfeature that will work with the old ones or if that's a new thing that's hardware only.

22:00SPEAKERBut anyway, I wonder, man, we should, there's more to talk about here.

22:03SPEAKERI started to say, I wonder if they will figure out wireless audio on the next switch because

22:07SPEAKERthe Nintendo switch is kind of the thing stopping me from getting something like these for travel.

22:13SPEAKERDo they not, well, they, the, the, they added an update that lets you do Bluetooth audio

22:17SPEAKERlast year.

22:18SPEAKERIt's not perfect.

22:19SPEAKERIt doesn't work with every set of headphones.

22:21SPEAKERAnd I believe even in the best case, there's still noticeable latency.

22:24SPEAKERI think I would have to double check that it's not, it's not great.

22:28SPEAKERI hope they have it for them.

22:29SPEAKERI hope they have a solution for the next one because I don't want to have to keep traveling

22:35SPEAKERwith headphones that have a plug on them.

22:37SPEAKERI I'm well, you can get a blue thing, a Bluetooth dongle that dangles out and I, yeah, anyway,

22:45SPEAKERit's complicated is the TLDR there's there are definitely audio protocols, protocols

22:49SPEAKERthat support it, but I believe they require hardware support.

22:51SPEAKERSo my guess is that Nintendo just didn't pony up for the right chip when they built the

22:55SPEAKERswitch 10 years ago now or whatever, it's however long it's been let's talk about watches.

23:01SPEAKERYeah.

23:02SPEAKERIt's it's smart.

23:04SPEAKERIt's smart.

23:05SPEAKERSmart Sunday.

23:06SPEAKERI'm sorry.

23:07SPEAKERWhat smart watch?

23:08SPEAKERIt's March.

23:09SPEAKERYeah.

23:10SPEAKERLousy smarches.

23:11SPEAKERIs this a category you're curious about at all?

23:15SPEAKERYes.

23:16SPEAKERI was like, you know, pending, pending the details of this announcement, I was very seriously

23:19SPEAKERthinking about finally getting a watch, even though I never leave the house.

23:24SPEAKERWell the fitness side, the fitness side is nice.

23:27SPEAKERSo, so yeah, that's like a huge use case for me is that I currently bring my phone with

23:32SPEAKERme every time I go out and exercise because it tracks a it's got whatever I'm listening

23:35SPEAKERto on it.

23:36SPEAKERYeah.

23:37SPEAKERHe attracts all my activity, which is very motivating and nice to look at and having

23:42SPEAKERsomething, I assume the watch can just fully take the place of that particular role, right?

23:47SPEAKERLike there's nothing, there's nothing in that use case that the watch can't just do without

23:51SPEAKERthe phone nearby.

23:52SPEAKERRight?

23:53SPEAKERSo it, it, it depends on which watch you, so you know, you can get the watch that's

23:57SPEAKERjust Bluetooth and wifi.

23:58SPEAKERYou get the watch that's Bluetooth, wifi, and cell.

24:01SPEAKERIf you want to have streamed stuff, then you obviously have to have the cell if you're

24:06SPEAKERnot taking a watch with you.

24:07SPEAKERSure.

24:08SPEAKERBut storage, right?

24:09SPEAKERLike I'm, I'm fine loading podcasts onto the wall.

24:11SPEAKERYeah.

24:12SPEAKERLike depending on your podcast client, you can, you can load the like overcast.

24:15SPEAKERLet's me download podcasts to the, to the phone and it's fine.

24:18SPEAKERIt works great.

24:19SPEAKERI mean, to the watch rather.

24:21SPEAKERSo I've not had a cell connected, like I bought a cell connected watch just in case I wanted

24:25SPEAKERin the future cause Verizon paid me to, or to, to gave me a rebate basically for buying

24:31SPEAKERit.

24:32SPEAKEREven, I've not activated it yet.

24:34SPEAKERI don't intend to unless we start leaving the house again.

24:39SPEAKERThe fitness stuff is nice, like, like the ability to go out and like the, the ring,

24:45SPEAKERthe whole three rings, the standing exercise and walking steps ring are really like kind

24:52SPEAKERof shockingly motivating even for me, a notorious lazy ass.

24:57SPEAKERAnd it's, I, so I got one in January after I'd done the hospital and was tired of unlocking,

25:03SPEAKERhaving to type in my number to unlock my phone, which is the stupidest thing ever, just because

25:08SPEAKERof the mask.

25:11SPEAKERIt's it's it's good.

25:13SPEAKERIt's I like it.

25:15SPEAKERIt seems like it's a stable enough product now in terms of like the, the, the work that

25:21SPEAKERthey're doing, like the, the new models have a, what I would describe as the most, a very

25:26SPEAKERminor SOC update, it seems like they didn't talk about performance at all.

25:31SPEAKERYeah.

25:32SPEAKERSo yes, that's why I said pending the details of this announcement, like I feel like the

25:36SPEAKERseries eight is, well, you said it, it is extremely incremental.

25:39SPEAKERLike it seems like the kind of the same guts barring a couple of new sensors.

25:44SPEAKERThey, first of all, it is pretty tough to find specs on what is in the watch.

25:48SPEAKERThey don't, they don't talk about it because I think they think that it reached a point

25:51SPEAKERwhere it doesn't matter.

25:52SPEAKERMaybe, maybe you're right.

25:54SPEAKERSo I think they did technically rev the name of the, it's not an SOC it's a system in package

26:00SPEAKERand SIP.

26:01SPEAKEROh, right.

26:02SPEAKEROf course.

26:03SPEAKERIt's according to Apple anyway, I think they did rev the number from like the S seven to

26:07SPEAKERthe S eight.

26:10SPEAKERSo the knock last year was this exact same thing was that the seven was basically the

26:13SPEAKERsame specs as the six with some new sensors.

26:15SPEAKEROkay.

26:16SPEAKERSo I want to say the screen got slightly bigger last year.

26:19SPEAKERSo the difference is they went with the edge to edge screen and I think the seven was the

26:23SPEAKERfirst one that had the always on screen.

26:24SPEAKEROh, I think you're right.

26:26SPEAKERYeah.

26:27SPEAKERYeah.

26:28SPEAKERYeah.

26:29SPEAKERBut, but like those, but the point was they went for battery life over performance, which

26:33SPEAKERis in my eyes, the right choice.

26:35SPEAKERYeah, you're right.

26:36SPEAKERActually in a watch context, I think you're totally right.

26:40SPEAKEREspecially seeing what the battery numbers are here.

26:42SPEAKERLike it seems like we're finally getting to the point where you can make it a full day.

26:46SPEAKERAlso on my seven, I've been, if I don't do workouts, I get a full day.

26:52SPEAKERWell, okay.

26:53SPEAKERIf I don't do workouts and I have my, my notifications set up so that they're not obnoxious.

26:57SPEAKERSo it's just things that I actually need to be notified about, like text messages and

27:01SPEAKERimportant emails for work and like not every team's message that goes across my, my computer

27:06SPEAKERand discord message.

27:08SPEAKERI usually get 30, 36 hours on the battery on the single charge.

27:14SPEAKERThat's eat a lot of time, eat a lot of battery just because it's constantly doing heart rate

27:18SPEAKERchecking and, and blood ox monitoring and all that stuff.

27:24SPEAKERBut it's, it's, it's, I would describe it as a very usable device and it means it also

27:30SPEAKEReven staying in the house all the time, it means that like while I'm working and need

27:34SPEAKERto be available, I don't necessarily have to be sitting in front of my computer or have

27:38SPEAKERmy phone even on me and out all the time because if I, if I'm waiting for a message, I get

27:43SPEAKERthe notification.

27:44SPEAKERRight.

27:45SPEAKERIt does sound pretty nice actually, but the use cases for this thing are just stacking

27:49SPEAKERup for me.

27:50SPEAKERAlso, I use Apple pay a lot now and having something where I can just hold my wrist up

27:53SPEAKERto something in a store to pay for it also, you know what, I should probably get a watch.

27:57SPEAKERWell, so, so between the Apple pay thing, the Apple pay, I use a ton.

28:00SPEAKERI always, I felt kind of embarrassed about it at first and then it very quickly became

28:04SPEAKERlike the least annoying thing possible because you don't have, because it's always on and

28:07SPEAKERit knows it's on your wrist and it knows you unlocked it.

28:09SPEAKERWhen you put it on, you don't have to do the face scanning thing like you do when you use

28:13SPEAKERApple pay on the phone.

28:14SPEAKERSo how do you activate Apple pay on the watch?

28:16SPEAKERBecause even on the phone, I mean, just using a phone, it's pretty convenient, at least

28:19SPEAKERfor...

28:20SPEAKERJust double tap the wide button and then it goes to whatever your default card is.

28:25SPEAKERGot it.

28:26SPEAKERThe the yeah, like it's, it's a good device.

28:30SPEAKERIt's like, I like it.

28:31SPEAKERI find it useful.

28:34SPEAKERHaving the blood ox when I was sick was really nice because it meant that I could just share

28:38SPEAKERthat health data with Gina and she didn't have to worry that my blood ox was dropping

28:41SPEAKERwhen I had COVID, which is like a legitimate reduction in anxiety for her as she was sitting

28:47SPEAKERin the other room and not wanting to come in and stick my finger in the sensor and all

28:51SPEAKERthat stuff.

28:52SPEAKERYou know, we've been talking about those nineties AT&T you will commercials.

28:55SPEAKERYeah.

28:56SPEAKERLike what you just described seems like a good version of the type of you will stuff

28:59SPEAKERthey were predicting 20, 30 years ago, sharing your blood oxygenation with your spouse remotely

29:04SPEAKERis like a future sentence that 25 years ago I would not have believed.

29:10SPEAKERYou're kind of right.

29:11SPEAKERIt's kind of, it's, it was pretty nice.

29:13SPEAKERIt was, it was, and it made her feel like it gave her a lot of comfort when she heard

29:18SPEAKERme in there hacking up a lung that she didn't have to bother me and wake me up potentially

29:23SPEAKERto get me to check the things she could just look at the, at the, at the health data.

29:27SPEAKERSo the new, new stuff on here are crash detection and a temperature sense.

29:31SPEAKERDid they really not have temperature before?

29:34SPEAKERSo they don't, they didn't have, I mean, I'm sure that the device has temperature sensing

29:37SPEAKERto see if the battery's catching on fire and stuff like that, but they didn't have something

29:40SPEAKERthat, that I don't think they had a way that they felt like they could accurately measure

29:43SPEAKERthe person that's wearing its temperature.

29:45SPEAKERYeah.

29:46SPEAKERThat's what it, to be clear, that's what I meant just because they've had such a health

29:48SPEAKERfocus on this thing for so long.

29:50SPEAKERI'm kind of shocked that like tracking your temperature seems like kind of core to that

29:55SPEAKERmission, but I guess here we are.

29:56SPEAKERYeah, as well.

29:57SPEAKERSo, okay.

29:58SPEAKERSo the crash detection is on all the new devices.

29:59SPEAKERIt seems like it's basically, we'll talk about it here, but it's on the iPhone 14, it's on

30:04SPEAKERthe iPhone 14 pro.

30:05SPEAKERIt's basically a high G IMU accelerometer that goes up to I think 200 Gs, which is basically

30:12SPEAKERlike you're driving at 70 miles an hour and you hit a telephone pole, dead stop.

30:18SPEAKERAnd that, if you've set it up, basically will notify emergency contacts and call 911.

30:23SPEAKERIt seems like if you, if you, if you have set that up in advance to let people know

30:27SPEAKERthat you were in a, in a serious accident.

30:30SPEAKERIt's grim, but it's a nice feature.

30:33SPEAKERAs they, they, they literally pitched it as we hope this is a feature that nobody ever

30:36SPEAKERhas to use.

30:37SPEAKERYeah, seriously.

30:38SPEAKERBut I can, I mean, that stuff works, right?

30:40SPEAKERLike the, the people have collapsed due to cardiac events and their watch called 911 stuff.

30:46SPEAKERLike those stories are out there, right?

30:47SPEAKERYeah.

30:48SPEAKERAnd it seems like they're setting up, I mean, we'll talk about it more on the phones, but

30:52SPEAKERit seems like they're setting up like an intermediary to help filter out the bad calls and to relay

30:56SPEAKERstuff when false positives, false positives or whatever.

31:00SPEAKERYeah.

31:01SPEAKERSo my, my guess is it's going to be really hard to do a 200 G false positive.

31:05SPEAKERProbably.

31:06SPEAKERUnless you're on the part of the Artemis submission or something.

31:09SPEAKERI don't know.

31:10SPEAKERWell, you know, you put, put your watch in a sock and then smash it into a cinder block

31:13SPEAKERwall.

31:14SPEAKERThat would probably do it.

31:15SPEAKERIt sounds like tested video waiting to happen.

31:16SPEAKERYeah, I know, right?

31:18SPEAKERThe the temperature sensing stuff is interesting, A for fevers and stuff like that, presumably,

31:25SPEAKERbut they put, they put it primarily in terms of women who want to track menstruation and

31:30SPEAKERovulation cycles.

31:31SPEAKERHuh?

31:32SPEAKERThis is the, I would not have known the temperature was useful for that, but of course I wouldn't

31:35SPEAKERbecause it's not come up.

31:36SPEAKERI'm not the, I'm not the intended audience, but that that's cool that they put that in

31:40SPEAKERthere.

31:41SPEAKERAnd then it's also very interesting.

31:42SPEAKERI'll let you mention the next point here, but that they addressed the privacy aspect

31:46SPEAKERof this.

31:47SPEAKERWell, so yeah, the ovulation thing for people who don't know if you're, if you're trying

31:51SPEAKERto figure out when you're ovulating, then you take your temperature at really, really

31:54SPEAKERtight intervals throughout the day and you try to do it the exact same times so that

31:58SPEAKERyou can see from day to day when, when changes happen and like slight increases in temperature

32:03SPEAKERindicate that you're ovulating.

32:07SPEAKERSo that stuff is, they made a very explicit point to point out that everything that lives

32:11SPEAKERin their particular cycle tracking app, which is where you know, like period tracking and

32:17SPEAKERovulation and stuff like that lives only lives in the protected area on the phone if you

32:22SPEAKERuse face ID or a passcode.

32:25SPEAKERSo kind of hang on, I feel like that if just sort of sales by here, like what if you're

32:29SPEAKERnot using face ID or a passcode?

32:31SPEAKERI mean, granted almost everybody does, but still like if you don't use those things,

32:35SPEAKERthen the protected area isn't protected.

32:37SPEAKEROkay.

32:38SPEAKERSo the protected area is protected with the passcode and all of the normal rules apply

32:41SPEAKERabout biometrics and versus passcodes.

32:44SPEAKERSo like if you live in a state where your state law enforcement is prosecuting people

32:49SPEAKERfor getting abortions and things like that, or having miscarriages.

32:51SPEAKERAnd if you live in Alabama, for example probably don't use face ID because the law about a

33:01SPEAKERcop holding up the phone in front of your face to unlock your phone for search and seizure

33:07SPEAKERis really muddy, but basically you can't be forced to type in a passcode and you can be

33:13SPEAKERforced to look at your phone.

33:14SPEAKERYeah.

33:15SPEAKERWhat's the legal distinction is something you have versus something you know, is that

33:18SPEAKERright?

33:19SPEAKERI'm not a lawyer, but the upshot is be careful with this shit if you live in a state where

33:24SPEAKERyour law enforcement is kind of fascist and doesn't believe that abortion is a right.

33:29SPEAKERIt's of course despicable that we even find ourselves in this situation, but it does kind

33:33SPEAKERof reinforce my idea that Apple seems the most privacy focused of the big tech companies,

33:39SPEAKERwhich granted is a low bar.

33:41SPEAKEROn a fun thing you'll notice if you go to the iPhone and watch page and all that on

33:47SPEAKERthe apple.com, as you scroll between the big hits, there is a privacy note between every

33:52SPEAKERsingle one of the big hits.

33:54SPEAKERSo it's like, "Hey, we turned on the do not tracking thing so that people, apps won't

34:00SPEAKERtrack you from session to session and from blah, blah, blah, blah without your knowledge."

34:06SPEAKERThey're really hitting privacy hard.

34:09SPEAKERSo the other watch, so that's the series eight.

34:12SPEAKERThe ultra is basically the same guts in a sturdy case, in an adventure explorer slash

34:18SPEAKERscuba diver case.

34:20SPEAKERAnd it's got the flat face.

34:22SPEAKERAnd it has the flat face, which is what makes it sturdier.

34:24SPEAKEROh, this has been rumored for years now.

34:26SPEAKERI mean, it's just like the phones went from a rounded design to a flat design as of the

34:32SPEAKER12, was it?

34:33SPEAKEROr the 11?

34:34SPEAKER10.

34:35SPEAKERFlat design started in the 10.

34:36SPEAKERHot.

34:37SPEAKERDid it really?

34:38SPEAKERYep.

34:39SPEAKERI thought the 10 still had the rounded glass edges.

34:40SPEAKERNope.

34:41SPEAKERStill flat, but it had the rounded corners, but they were flat.

34:45SPEAKERThe glass was flat.

34:46SPEAKERBut they've gone further in the last, what, two years?

34:49SPEAKERThey went back to the kind of hard edges that look like the iPhone 4.

34:51SPEAKERThat started with the 10.

34:52SPEAKERIt's been the same design for a long time.

34:54SPEAKERWow.

34:55SPEAKEROkay.

34:56SPEAKERLike five, six, seven years now almost.

34:57SPEAKERAfter I kind of fell off caring about the annual phone refresh, they all blurred together.

35:02SPEAKERThe last one with the curved glass was the seven or eight.

35:06SPEAKERWas there an eight?

35:07SPEAKERThe eight and the current SE, they all still have that same front from the six.

35:09SPEAKERThe six to the current SE are all basically the same.

35:12SPEAKERYeah.

35:13SPEAKERWhereas the 10 and on were pretty much the same design as the old five, but just blown

35:19SPEAKERup with a notch.

35:20SPEAKERFour and five.

35:21SPEAKERThe four and five are the best iPhones.

35:23SPEAKERI think the five S was my all time favorite, probably.

35:26SPEAKERReally?

35:27SPEAKERI never had a four.

35:28SPEAKERI think the four looks cooler than the five.

35:31SPEAKERThe squatty one looks...

35:32SPEAKERYeah.

35:33SPEAKERAnyway, it'd be hard to use a screen with that size screen anymore.

35:35SPEAKEROh, I don't.

35:36SPEAKERI mean, the size obviously is not workable anyway.

35:38SPEAKERSo yeah, I've been keeping my eye on watch rumors for the last couple of years and yes,

35:43SPEAKERthe rumor keeps surfacing like, "Oh, they're going to go to a..."

35:46SPEAKERBecause the current watch kind of looks like a bubble of glass.

35:50SPEAKERYeah.

35:51SPEAKERIt's very rounded.

35:53SPEAKERIt looks like a capsule.

35:54SPEAKERYeah.

35:55SPEAKERIt looks like a fat capsule.

35:57SPEAKERRight.

35:58SPEAKERAnd so I would say the majority of high-end watches don't share a design like that.

36:03SPEAKERThey're more kind of flat, hard edge watch face.

36:06SPEAKERIt definitely looks like its own thing.

36:08SPEAKERThe ultra, I really like the way it looks.

36:10SPEAKERSo the case is made out of titanium.

36:17SPEAKERIt doesn't have the curved bezel, as you said, so it's a flat face bezel.

36:20SPEAKERYes.

36:21SPEAKERI have desired a flat Apple watch for a long time and the fact that they finally did it

36:25SPEAKERand it's twice the price.

36:27SPEAKERWell, so we'll get to that, but the crown is bigger, so it works with gloves, which

36:32SPEAKERis a problem with the current one.

36:33SPEAKERIf you live someplace cold, you don't have thick, chunky gloves on with this thing because

36:36SPEAKERit's a big knurled knob that looks really cool.

36:40SPEAKERIt's waterproof to 100 meters.

36:41SPEAKERThe depth gauge works to 40 meters, which is pretty typical for inexpensive to mid-tier

36:49SPEAKERdive watches.

36:50SPEAKERI don't think normal divers go beyond 40 meters.

36:53SPEAKER40 meters is 120 feet, which is the outer limit of what Paddy certifies for recreational

37:00SPEAKERdivers.

37:02SPEAKERUsually people don't go much below 60 feet.

37:04SPEAKERI would not have even considered the idea of a dive watch product category until you

37:08SPEAKERsaid it.

37:09SPEAKERI guess it makes sense, but I assume there's a lot more than just time on your average

37:12SPEAKERdive watch.

37:13SPEAKERYeah.

37:14SPEAKERWell, so yeah, when you're diving, you have to measure, basically you track the time you're

37:18SPEAKERat different depths to understand how much nitrogen your blood has absorbed so that you

37:23SPEAKERcan diffuse that out on the way out without making bubbles that will give you the bends.

37:26SPEAKERWithout getting the bends.

37:28SPEAKERYeah.

37:29SPEAKERYeah.

37:33SPEAKERYou can get a subscription base.

37:36SPEAKEROkay.

37:37SPEAKERThey pitched it as mountaineering extreme sports, or not extreme sports, but extreme

37:40SPEAKERathletes and scuba divers as the markets for this.

37:44SPEAKERBut really what they're saying is, "Hey, we finally made a high-end Apple watch that's

37:49SPEAKERnot just a status symbol."

37:50SPEAKEROkay.

37:51SPEAKERIf you think about the edition watches, which started at a grand usually, they always were

37:55SPEAKEReither gold or some crazy white ceramic or it was normally the exact same watch as the

38:05SPEAKERother one, just in something that was more expensive.

38:07SPEAKERIt's stupid.

38:08SPEAKERUnless you're really wealthy and you don't give a shit, in which case go nuts.

38:13SPEAKERBut yeah, this is actually a more, they actually have made a more functional device here, it

38:19SPEAKERseems like.

38:20SPEAKERYes.

38:21SPEAKERFor double the price, there are actually features that at least helped justify the extra price.

38:24SPEAKERThat said, this is going to be widely used as a status symbol.

38:28SPEAKERI was going to say, you're not going to go see, I'm not going to go to a business meeting

38:32SPEAKERin the valley that there's not one of these on the table in a month, I have no doubt.

38:39SPEAKERSo I'm more familiar with the, I stopped diving about 15 years ago.

38:44SPEAKERWait.

38:45SPEAKERWhat?

38:46SPEAKERWhat?

38:47SPEAKEROh my God.

38:48SPEAKERAll this time I did not realize you were speaking from experience.

38:50SPEAKEROh yeah.

38:51SPEAKERNo.

38:52SPEAKERYou're a diver?

38:53SPEAKERNo, so I started scuba diving in the mid nineties when I was in high school, early nineties,

38:57SPEAKERI guess, when I was in high school and stopped in like early two thousands.

39:02SPEAKERWhere were you going?

39:03SPEAKERCause like we, well, had you moved by that point?

39:05SPEAKERCause I was going to say, we discussed last week, you grew up in a fairly landlocked situation.

39:09SPEAKERThere are lakes, man.

39:10SPEAKERI learned, I learned to scuba dive in the lakes of Northeast Tennessee and then went

39:13SPEAKERto Florida.

39:14SPEAKERWe went to Florida a lot.

39:15SPEAKERSo we went to like Pennecamp and Key West and the Springs in central Florida and stuff

39:20SPEAKERlike that.

39:21SPEAKERWe just saw some of that nice clear ocean water, no mucky lakes.

39:24SPEAKERWell, the lakes, the, so the lakes are clear.

39:28SPEAKERLike the, the trick about lake diving is it's very much clearer in the spring before a bunch

39:31SPEAKERof boats have stirred up all the silt on the side of the thing by making wakes all summer.

39:35SPEAKERSure.

39:36SPEAKERSo when there's lower traffic, it's much, anyway, it doesn't matter.

39:40SPEAKERWhen I started diving dive computers were in a really expensive novelty that nobody

39:44SPEAKERtrusted.

39:45SPEAKERBy the time I was done diving, it was like the way everybody learned to do their dive

39:49SPEAKERtables and you carried a table as a backup just in case something went wrong with your

39:54SPEAKERcomputer, but never did.

39:55SPEAKERAnd everybody always used computers but they were really expensive.

39:59SPEAKERWhen I looked to see what a cheapo dive computer costs now, it's like 200 to 300 bucks.

40:03SPEAKERYeah.

40:04SPEAKERGood ones are much more.

40:06SPEAKERLike it seems terrifying.

40:09SPEAKERIf you're not claustrophobic, it's fine.

40:10SPEAKERIf you're claustrophobic, it's probably not for you.

40:12SPEAKERYeah.

40:13SPEAKERIt just seems like a lot of split second decisions and like things to keep track of and like

40:17SPEAKERif it goes wrong, you're in some serious trouble.

40:19SPEAKERLook why do you think I like battle royales?

40:21SPEAKERI love split second decisions that are life threatening.

40:23SPEAKERI guess so.

40:24SPEAKERI got, well, we probably don't need to get into it.

40:27SPEAKERI got on a kick of reading like cave diving stories for a while.

40:30SPEAKERThose people are fucking insane.

40:31SPEAKERYeah.

40:32SPEAKERSo like that, I mean, okay, if you're telling me that cave diving is like a whole extra

40:36SPEAKERechelon of dangerous and terrifying above regular diving, then sure.

40:40SPEAKERSo okay.

40:41SPEAKERThe rule for recreational divers is you never want to be someplace that you can't just go

40:46SPEAKERstraight up and get to air.

40:49SPEAKERSo like wreck diving, cave diving, even getting under overhangs and stuff like that is something

40:54SPEAKERI would never do.

40:55SPEAKERSure.

40:56SPEAKERI am a, I am the most conservative diver you've ever seen.

40:59SPEAKERI don't think I ever went below 55 feet, 50 feet.

41:03SPEAKERAnd yeah, it's, it's like, no, no thanks to cave diving.

41:07SPEAKERThose people are literally, it's like when, when the outcome from cave dives, if things

41:12SPEAKERgo wrong is you just take the regular regulator out so you suffer less.

41:17SPEAKERThat's going to be a no for me, dog.

41:19SPEAKERYeah.

41:20SPEAKERIs it, is it just straight up hypoxia that you suffer from when you're down too deep

41:23SPEAKERfor too long or is there something else going on there?

41:25SPEAKERI'm not quite sure what the mechanics are.

41:26SPEAKERCause like even when you have oxygen in the tank, technically like you can still end up

41:31SPEAKERin a bad situation, right?

41:32SPEAKERWell, nitrogen narcosis, so once you get to a certain depth, then nitrogen becomes a little

41:36SPEAKERbit of a narcotic and you get kind of high and it gets higher.

41:38SPEAKERYou get your decision making gets worse and worse, the deeper you go and the longer you

41:42SPEAKERstay.

41:43SPEAKERYeah.

41:44SPEAKERSo that's exactly the type of stuff I was seeing with the cave divers was people being

41:48SPEAKERdown there for too long, trying to do things.

41:49SPEAKERAnd yeah.

41:50SPEAKERYeah.

41:51SPEAKERSo people, people do a lot of stuff to avoid that they do like Heliox and other other non

41:55SPEAKERnitrogen air mixtures, but, but like most recreational, like that's professional certification,

42:01SPEAKERlike different certifications normal recreational divers dive, dive, compressed air.

42:06SPEAKERAnd like, that's the reason that limit of 60 feet is 60 feet is because once you like,

42:12SPEAKERthat's already in the place where I don't like where your decision making is maybe slightly

42:16SPEAKERimpaired depending on the person.

42:18SPEAKEROnce you get below that it starts to get hinky and also your, your linger time at the bottom

42:21SPEAKERis really short at 60 feet because compressed air, your lungs stay the same size, but the

42:26SPEAKERair gets smaller and smaller.

42:28SPEAKERThe more compressed, the deeper you go.

42:30SPEAKERI like, if I was buying a dive watch, 800 bucks for something that's pretty good is,

42:38SPEAKERis gonna, is a pretty good, seems like a pretty good deal.

42:41SPEAKERSure.

42:42SPEAKERAnd there's also an extremely functional watch on land.

42:45SPEAKERYeah.

42:46SPEAKERYeah.

42:47SPEAKERAnd it's also a status symbol.

42:48SPEAKERSo you look cool in your meetings with your cool orange wristband or whatever.

42:52SPEAKERThe fine print does say you need a backup device.

42:54SPEAKERI'm pretty sure that most dive computers say that which means that they want you to carry

42:58SPEAKERa dive table just in case the computer conks out while you're at depth so you can like

43:03SPEAKERlive.

43:04SPEAKERI'm interested.

43:05SPEAKERI wasn't able to find out whether AppleCare covers water damage on the ultra.

43:10SPEAKERI would assume it does at this price point, but it may not.

43:13SPEAKERAnd I'm curious to see what the result on that is.

43:17SPEAKERI'm really interested to see reviews from people who actually use this kind of watch.

43:20SPEAKERLike, like my guess, my guess is that this has been rumored for long enough that they've

43:25SPEAKERbeen working on it for a long time and have actually consulted with people who are familiar

43:31SPEAKERwith the category and it's not just speculative based on paper.

43:36SPEAKERBut I'll be reading reviews interestingly.

43:39SPEAKERAnd like this to me seems like a good one to buy on the rev too, probably rather than

43:43SPEAKERthe rev one.

43:44SPEAKERI like, I don't know, like the hardware, the hardware in general on the watch seems stable

43:50SPEAKERenough that it's not like, I wouldn't feel worried about buying a watch that's $800 if

43:57SPEAKERyou're going to use the stuff that's in it or you think it's cool or whatever.

44:00SPEAKERLike I would much rather, I would, I would, let me put it in a different way.

44:05SPEAKERI think they're still selling the stainless steel version of the main watch.

44:09SPEAKERI would much rather spend the money on this than get the stainless steel version at a

44:12SPEAKER$200 premium over the aluminum one.

44:14SPEAKERYeah.

44:15SPEAKEROnce you're that close in price, this makes more sense, I guess.

44:18SPEAKERYeah.

44:19SPEAKERDo you think there's, there's no small size one.

44:22SPEAKERYeah.

44:23SPEAKERSo it's only the, it's only, it uses the 44 slash 45 millimeter wristbands, which are

44:28SPEAKERcompatible with it apparently.

44:29SPEAKERAnd I believe there's only one model that, I mean, they all come with cell, right?

44:33SPEAKERLike there is no, there's no cellular free version of this thing.

44:36SPEAKEROh yeah.

44:37SPEAKERI didn't actually look at that.

44:38SPEAKERI believe that is the case.

44:40SPEAKERThere's three different models that come with the three different sport bands for different

44:43SPEAKERthings.

44:44SPEAKERThere's a mountaineering, it's, it's a mountaineering scuba diving and I can't remember what the

44:51SPEAKERthird one is.

44:52SPEAKEROkay.

44:53SPEAKERYeah.

44:54SPEAKERI'm, I'm on the product page.

44:55SPEAKERYes.

44:56SPEAKERThere is only one skew, one price for this thing.

44:58SPEAKERYeah.

44:59SPEAKERIt's all, it's all $800 basically.

45:01SPEAKERSo nice, but it's so expensive.

45:04SPEAKERIt is.

45:05SPEAKERIt is.

45:06SPEAKERIt's the first one of these that I think has looked cool.

45:07SPEAKERYeah.

45:08SPEAKERDo you think, do you think the flat face trickles down to the regular line eventually or is

45:13SPEAKERthat something that's just going to stay exclusive?

45:14SPEAKERIt's a pretty good differentiator.

45:16SPEAKERI think.

45:17SPEAKERYeah.

45:18SPEAKERYou're probably right.

45:19SPEAKERAlso it's a bigger case.

45:20SPEAKERSo they have more battery in there is the other thing.

45:22SPEAKEROh, so they have the Alpine loop, the trail running a loop and the ocean band.

45:25SPEAKEROkay.

45:26SPEAKERFor me, the Alpine loop.

45:27SPEAKERI might buy an Alpine loop for my watch just cause I think it looks frigging awesome.

45:31SPEAKERIt's always like orange nylon and has all this, it's really lumpy and cool.

45:34SPEAKERAnyway.

45:35SPEAKERCan it get into mountaineering?

45:36SPEAKERNo, I just want the orange watch band.

45:37SPEAKEROkay.

45:38SPEAKERThe last thing I want to do is mountaineering.

45:39SPEAKERThat sounds horrible.

45:41SPEAKERSo that's the watch like I, I think the eight, like they doesn't seem like an upgrade for

45:48SPEAKERanything unless you don't have an always on watch already.

45:50SPEAKERYeah.

45:51SPEAKERYou use that?

45:52SPEAKERYeah.

45:53SPEAKERAll the time.

45:54SPEAKERDo you ever eyeball it?

45:55SPEAKERSo, I mean, I know, I know that I know that the refresh drops to as low as one Hertz to

45:59SPEAKERmaintain battery.

46:00SPEAKERDo you ever like eyeball it and see what it does?

46:02SPEAKERI assume it's just like a very, very basic watch face that just ticks a numeral over.

46:07SPEAKERSo yeah, it, it, so the seconds hand goes away when you have, when it's in like the

46:12SPEAKERlow power mode or whatever, if you're on an analog face, it doesn't blink the numbers

46:18SPEAKERbetween the hour and minutes if you're on a digital face.

46:22SPEAKERAnd usually the colors fade a little bit too.

46:23SPEAKERSo it's mostly, it's like a gray scale version of your, of your watch face often.

46:27SPEAKEROkay.

46:28SPEAKERIt works best if you use a black background watch face, you get much better battery life

46:32SPEAKERbecause it's an OLED is the, is the main thing.

46:34SPEAKERWell, Hey, it's good that they figured all that stuff out now because always on has come

46:38SPEAKERto a phone.

46:39SPEAKEROoh, good transition.

46:40SPEAKERYeah.

46:41SPEAKERYou want to talk about pros first, you want to talk about 14s first, because it seems

46:46SPEAKERlike the pro is the only thing to talk about here.

46:48SPEAKERYeah.

46:49SPEAKERThe 14 is actually maybe we should start with the regular because like, is this, is this

46:54SPEAKERthe smallest or like most incremental improvement to an iPhone ever, or for a while, like it's

47:02SPEAKERusing practically the same SOC, which like seems unheard of to me in the iPhone line,

47:06SPEAKERbut maybe that's not the thing to lead with.

47:08SPEAKERNo, it's the 13 pro SOC.

47:10SPEAKERSo it's a better SOC than the baseline iPhone 13 had the 12 pro SOC or whatever.

47:18SPEAKERIt's like the 14 is always one CPU back.

47:20SPEAKERYeah.

47:21SPEAKERYeah.

47:22SPEAKERI forgot that they had already been differentiating pretty heavily in the guts between the pro

47:25SPEAKERand the regular.

47:26SPEAKERYeah.

47:27SPEAKERI mean, it's, it's, I mean, so the 14 is 6.1 or 6.7 inches.

47:32SPEAKERIt has the super retina with the frame rate change to the dynamic frame rate this time

47:37SPEAKERscreen with the OLED.

47:39SPEAKERI don't know if it had this, I don't, I can't remember if it had the OLED with the XDR with

47:43SPEAKERthe frame rate changes last year.

47:45SPEAKERI don't believe, wasn't that a pro only feature?

47:47SPEAKERI thought that was a pro only feature, but it might've, that might've stopped being a

47:50SPEAKERpro only feature last year.

47:52SPEAKERLike the first year the pro came out, it was definitely not a base model feature.

47:57SPEAKERLast year it might've been, I can't remember the moment they post the new phones, the old

48:01SPEAKERshit goes away.

48:02SPEAKERSo yeah, of course.

48:03SPEAKERI know that's 120 Hertz right up to one 10 to 120.

48:07SPEAKERYeah.

48:08SPEAKERRight.

48:09SPEAKERDepending on what you're using it as it's got six CPU cores, two per four efficiency,

48:13SPEAKERfive GPU cores, 15 neural engine cores, which is their machine learning nonsense.

48:19SPEAKERIt's IP 68 dust and splash proof, which is six minutes, six meters for 30 minutes.

48:24SPEAKERBut the TLDR is if you drop it in the toilet, it's not going to break.

48:28SPEAKERAnd as with all waterproof and dust proof stuff that does degrade over time and use.

48:32SPEAKERHave you ever dropped a phone on the toilet?

48:34SPEAKERI don't want to talk about it.

48:36SPEAKERWhoa.

48:37SPEAKEROh my God.

48:39SPEAKERLook, sometimes tragedy strikes, Brad.

48:42SPEAKERMight have to break out the flame thrower after that happened.

48:46SPEAKERThere was a lot of rubbing alcohol involved.

48:51SPEAKERIt has the two camera design.

48:52SPEAKERThat's how you can tell it's a base model instead of the pro interestingly.

48:57SPEAKERAnd I assume this is because of AR stuff.

48:58SPEAKERThey're still doing the normal, normal 26 mil equivalent F 1.5 lens and the 13 mil equivalent

49:05SPEAKERF 2.4 ultra wide lens.

49:08SPEAKERThere's no, no telephoto like the, like the third lens on the pros is a telephoto lens.

49:15SPEAKERIt gets a, it's the new, it's a newer sensor and has better low light.

49:18SPEAKERIt has the action camera stabilized mode that they showed in the, in the trailer that actually

49:21SPEAKERlooks pretty good.

49:23SPEAKERWhich basically uses like the extra pixels on the screen.

49:25SPEAKERSo basically it lets you run and bounce the camera and it stabilizes it by using the dead

49:30SPEAKERspace on the, on the, on the sensor to move the image around in, in the opposite direction

49:36SPEAKERthat the gyroscope detects you're moving, which is cool.

49:39SPEAKERIn real time?

49:40SPEAKERIn real time.

49:41SPEAKERThat's not a post-process.

49:42SPEAKERNot a post-process.

49:46SPEAKERIt has a cinematic mode, which I believe was a pro only feature last year.

49:51SPEAKERI can't remember again, it was gone.

49:54SPEAKERAnd it, it supports 4k at 24 Hertz now for video, which is, which in the cinematic mode,

49:59SPEAKERwhich is, which is like, if you want to shoot your student film on your iPhone, go nuts.

50:03SPEAKERYeah.

50:04SPEAKERThat's that's pretty neat.

50:05SPEAKERThat's possible.

50:07SPEAKERBoth of the new phones add the crash detection and emergency SOS to be a satellite.

50:13SPEAKERI'm sorry, just to back up, does the, does the watch have the satellite SOS as well or

50:18SPEAKERjust the crash?

50:19SPEAKERI don't believe the watch does.

50:21SPEAKEROkay.

50:22SPEAKERSo the satellite is just for the phones.

50:23SPEAKERYeah.

50:24SPEAKERI think you need the phone, phones to have the antenna space in it to work with the satellites,

50:26SPEAKERbut I could be wrong.

50:27SPEAKERSure.

50:28SPEAKERI wonder, I doubt they went into this.

50:29SPEAKERI wonder like what, what protocol are we talking here?

50:31SPEAKERWhat like system what's, what's the name of the emergency system?

50:34SPEAKERLike who deploys these satellites?

50:35SPEAKERIs this like, I assume kind of a widely used cross brand sort of thing?

50:40SPEAKERI think it's, well, so Garmin has had a service that is similar to this for a long time that

50:44SPEAKERthey've charged 10 bucks a month for.

50:47SPEAKERAnd it's, it's for, it's basically for backcountry rescue if you're someplace where there's no

50:52SPEAKERcell service that you can get, you can get help.

50:55SPEAKERI wonder if that connects, that just connects into the 911 phone system eventually, like

51:00SPEAKERon your end, obviously it's satellite, but I assume it's tying into the same emergency

51:04SPEAKERservices.

51:05SPEAKERWell, so on the Garmin side, I don't know how that works because I haven't looked at

51:08SPEAKERthat.

51:09SPEAKERThe Apple thing uses global star satellites.

51:11SPEAKERIt's not coming online until November.

51:13SPEAKERSo I assume that there's still some launches or something that has to happen or regulatory

51:16SPEAKERapproval or something for it to work.

51:18SPEAKERIt's only in the US and Canada and doesn't work above 62 degrees latitude.

51:23SPEAKERBut the short version of how it works is if you try to call, if you try to hit the emergency

51:28SPEAKERcall button and call 911 and then your phone gets no service, it says, Hey you get an option

51:36SPEAKERthat lets you text emergency services and what that then it asks you a series of questions.

51:41SPEAKERYou know, where are you?

51:42SPEAKERWhat's wrong?

51:43SPEAKERYou know, how soon do you need help, yada yada, which the phone then bundles those out.

51:49SPEAKERAnd whether you want to notify your emergency contacts where you are and what's happened,

51:52SPEAKERit bundles those up and compresses them and then tells you how to connect to the satellite.

51:58SPEAKERAnd basically you need to be in an unobstructed sky, inside won't work, light foliage dramatically

52:05SPEAKERextends the time it takes to send the message from like 15 seconds to more than a minute

52:09SPEAKERin some cases.

52:12SPEAKERBut the phone will walk you through a series.

52:14SPEAKERLike you don't have to aim it up at the sky.

52:15SPEAKERThe phone, if you need to change it, it'll say, okay, move it to the right.

52:19SPEAKERAnd it gives you like green light, green light as you get stronger signal is what it looks

52:23SPEAKERlike.

52:24SPEAKERThat sounds neat.

52:25SPEAKERThat all sounds doable.

52:26SPEAKERIf you are, let's say still Hardy and Hale in the middle of your emergency, if you are

52:31SPEAKERlike seriously incapacitated and injured, I don't know that you're going to be able

52:34SPEAKERto handle that.

52:35SPEAKERMy immediate thought was with the guy who had to saw his leg off in the movie because

52:42SPEAKERhe got stuck under the rock, he's in a canyon probably boned still would be my guess.

52:48SPEAKERBut like, but like for example, I had, I have a relative who broke their hip on a mountain

52:51SPEAKERbiking camping trip, right?

52:53SPEAKERLike they were pedaling down, felt a bad feeling.

52:57SPEAKERAnd then like they didn't have a way to get him out without him continuing to ride down

53:01SPEAKERthe mountain.

53:02SPEAKERSo he basically, yeah.

53:03SPEAKERAre you saying they broke their hip on the bike?

53:05SPEAKEROn the bike.

53:06SPEAKEROh, I thought you meant they like took a bad spill and broke it by hitting the ground.

53:10SPEAKERFluke accident.

53:11SPEAKERYeah.

53:12SPEAKEROh my God.

53:13SPEAKERSo he had to basically coast down the mountain and then get help pedaling, you know, pushing

53:18SPEAKERthe bike back up the Hills as he was going for six miles or something.

53:22SPEAKERYikes.

53:23SPEAKERAnd I think he probably would have happily gotten the people on the pickup trucks to

53:26SPEAKERcome or four wheelers or whatever, to come pick him up and haul him out rather than deal

53:29SPEAKERwith that.

53:30SPEAKERI can imagine.

53:33SPEAKERSo yeah, like broken ankles, broken legs, stranded, lost, stuff like that.

53:37SPEAKERSeems like the real, like, like I, I, my guess is mauled by bears is not the market use for

53:45SPEAKERthis, but like, Hey, I broke my ankle or I'm lost in the park is, is the, is where this

53:50SPEAKERcomes into play.

53:51SPEAKERYeah.

53:52SPEAKERGosh.

53:53SPEAKERI mean, there have been some, there have been some pretty high profile cases of people just

53:55SPEAKERbeing lost in the wilderness and dying of exposure over the last 15, 20 years.

53:58SPEAKERI mean, yeah.

53:59SPEAKERI mean, I remember I I've known people who got lost on road trips and got stuck in the

54:05SPEAKERsnow and right now, like I was, I was at CNET when, when the James Kim situation happened

54:11SPEAKERand that was obviously incredibly tragic and something like this, it seems like could prevent

54:16SPEAKERthings like that.

54:17SPEAKERYeah, exactly.

54:18SPEAKERI'm curious to how it works when it's snowing because it's snowing and raining.

54:22SPEAKERCause that would affect line of sight as well, potentially, I think, I think that like this

54:29SPEAKERin the crash detection, which both of the new phones have as well tells me that the

54:32SPEAKERsafety stuff must really work for them.

54:34SPEAKERYeah.

54:35SPEAKERYou mean as a marketing point, as a marketing, as a, as a, as a upgrade motivator.

54:39SPEAKERI mean, it's like, I, I am consistently impressed with this stuff because if we went back, what

54:44SPEAKERand what's it been 15 years since, well, I mean, we're on the iPhone 14, I guess we can

54:49SPEAKERcount, but like when iPhones were first becoming big like, like a health focus, a human like

54:55SPEAKERbiological focus is not something I ever would have predicted for what these devices were

54:59SPEAKERgoing to be used for.

55:00SPEAKERSo no, like for them to push this hard into the end of that space and seem to do a pretty

55:04SPEAKERgood job of it is pretty impressive.

55:06SPEAKERWell, so I'm interested, I'm interested to see, so one of the other things worth mentioning

55:13SPEAKERis a lot of the stuff that's previously been watched only in terms of fitness now works

55:17SPEAKERin a, in some limited capacity with the phone.

55:20SPEAKERLike if you put the, if you put your phone on your hip pocket and a pair of yoga pants

55:24SPEAKERare in like your, your jeans, when you're on a long walk, it'll track steps and stuff

55:28SPEAKERlike that in the same way that the watch does.

55:32SPEAKERI haven't actually tested that yet.

55:33SPEAKERI just found out about it the other day.

55:35SPEAKERBut, but yeah, and that's on, it seems like on most phones, it works on my old iPhone

55:40SPEAKER13.

55:41SPEAKERYeah.

55:42SPEAKERReal quick, before we move on from the satellite, did we mention the pricing stuff free for

55:46SPEAKERtwo years?

55:47SPEAKERThey're saying it's free for two years starts in November.

55:50SPEAKERNo idea what it costs after that.

55:53SPEAKERMy bet is that as soon as, as long as you keep buying new phones, you keep getting the

55:55SPEAKERtwo years for free.

55:56SPEAKERYeah.

55:57SPEAKEROr if not, I wonder if they just roll that up into the kind of existing iCloud subscription

56:03SPEAKERstuff that they have.

56:04SPEAKERI would hope so.

56:05SPEAKERI mean, that's, that's a hard hit for Garmin.

56:07SPEAKERThat's probably making pretty good money on 10 bucks a month right now.

56:10SPEAKERSure.

56:11SPEAKERThe other thing about this is it seems like it goes through a call and emergency services,

56:15SPEAKERlike, like intermediary that they run, that Apple runs.

56:18SPEAKERSo if you, cause most 911 systems don't accept text messages is my understanding.

56:25SPEAKERSo this text message comes in and then the Apple emergency rep person handles the transition

56:32SPEAKERto 911 service and or like park rangers or coast guard or whatever it is you need.

56:38SPEAKERAnd, and, and passes the information to your emergency contacts as well.

56:44SPEAKERI'm, it seems like you can't use this, the satellite texting to just, you know, let your

56:50SPEAKERbros know that you're, that you're having some sick shreds out by the Baja or something

56:54SPEAKERlike that.

56:55SPEAKERIf you don't have, if you don't have cell service, so hopefully not.

56:59SPEAKERAnd then last point here, Kosh, we have not even talked about the dynamic Island yet.

57:03SPEAKERWell, that's the pro.

57:05SPEAKERYes.

57:06SPEAKERIs that, is this the first generation that they have fully dumped physical SIM cards

57:10SPEAKERfinally?

57:11SPEAKERYeah, I think so my 13 pro has a SIM card on it right here.

57:16SPEAKERYes.

57:17SPEAKERYeah.

57:18SPEAKERI I'd have to take the case off.

57:19SPEAKERI want to say this new se that I got also still will take a card.

57:22SPEAKERI think they acted as though this was the first time they've shipped a SIM card tray

57:27SPEAKERlists phone.

57:28SPEAKERYeah.

57:29SPEAKERThat's, that's the impression I got.

57:30SPEAKERI did the eSIM set up when I switched to this phone back in may and it seems like the way

57:34SPEAKERto go.

57:36SPEAKERThe nice thing is if you lose your phone, people can't steal your SIM card and put it

57:40SPEAKERin another phone and then start using your service.

57:42SPEAKERYeah.

57:43SPEAKERAnd it took like 10 minutes.

57:44SPEAKERIt just, I just signed into the Verizon site and it was for, for a phone company experience.

57:48SPEAKERIt was amazingly seamless.

57:50SPEAKERYeah.

57:51SPEAKERI'm I'm like, I don't know.

57:57SPEAKERI don't have strong feelings about this one way or the other.

57:59SPEAKEROne nice thing is you can put multiple phone lines on the eSIM, which is a thing that is

58:02SPEAKERharder to do.

58:03SPEAKERYou have to get a special SIM card usually to do that without the eSIM.

58:06SPEAKERSo all right.

58:08SPEAKERSo this is the big boy.

58:10SPEAKERWell, yeah.

58:11SPEAKERSo we should, I'll just mention same notch on the 14 because it's not the same notch

58:16SPEAKERon the 14 Pro.

58:17SPEAKERYeah.

58:18SPEAKERThe 14 Pro, you want to just get right into it and you want to talk about it?

58:21SPEAKERWe really buried the lead here.

58:23SPEAKERThe Dynamic Island seems to be all anybody actually was talking about.

58:27SPEAKEROkay.

58:29SPEAKERSo the TLDR in the Dynamic Island is that instead of having a notch that comes down

58:35SPEAKERfrom the bezel, from the edge of the phone, they have put the phone sensor a little bit

58:39SPEAKERlower in the screen and then basically designed a black bar.

58:44SPEAKERThat is where all your notifications spawn to mask that notch, that, that that's that

58:50SPEAKERslice.

58:51SPEAKERAnd it is, I think I wrote in the notes that it's the most appley of Apple solutions to

58:55SPEAKERa problem that I've, I've seen in a long time.

58:59SPEAKERI'm curious how notorious notch haters and, and otherwise irrational folk feel about this

59:04SPEAKERthing.

59:05SPEAKERI think it looks better.

59:06SPEAKERReally?

59:07SPEAKERI think it's an improvement.

59:08SPEAKERYes.

59:09SPEAKEROkay.

59:10SPEAKERHaving it, having it be integrated in the screen rather than being a giant carve out

59:13SPEAKERof the screen, I think is like, I don't know why I need to keep emphasizing this.

59:17SPEAKERMy objection to the notch has always been entirely aesthetic.

59:20SPEAKEROh no, I understand.

59:22SPEAKERThere are people out there who seem to think I don't understand the, like the screen real

59:25SPEAKERestate geometry aspect of this whole thing.

59:28SPEAKERLike I get it.

59:29SPEAKERI just think it looks ugly, but this looks less ugly.

59:32SPEAKERI think that this is, I think this makes the punch out the whole punch outs that some other

59:36SPEAKERphones do.

59:37SPEAKERSo it's just a single hole.

59:39SPEAKERYeah.

59:40SPEAKERLook real silly.

59:41SPEAKERYeah.

59:42SPEAKERI think you're probably right.

59:43SPEAKERI mean, at least they're repurposing the space in some way, right?

59:46SPEAKERLike this is the same reason, like it's the same reason the notch on that new Mac book

59:49SPEAKERI bought doesn't bother me because I installed top notch and it just hides it, you know,

59:52SPEAKERlike as long as you can integrate it into your UI in a way that looks tasteful, not

59:56SPEAKERa big deal.

59:57SPEAKERYeah.

59:58SPEAKERSo this seems like I need to see more, some more examples about how it like expands and

1:00:01SPEAKERlike what some of the more unconventional use cases are for it.

1:00:05SPEAKERI mean, I saw a video going around that supposedly somebody had gotten doom running in that space.

1:00:09SPEAKERI don't know if that was just a, I think that was a joke.

1:00:11SPEAKERI don't know if that was a fake or not, or if it was actually somebody with the SDK.

1:00:14SPEAKERI mean, it's possible film film.

1:00:16SPEAKERThey did that.

1:00:17SPEAKERYou know, they did that on the touch bar on the Mac book like instantly.

1:00:19SPEAKEROkay.

1:00:20SPEAKERBut nobody has the phones.

1:00:21SPEAKEROh, I know.

1:00:22SPEAKERFilm Twitter was sending around that same clip with tenant playing in there, asking

1:00:27SPEAKERwhat, what's his name thought about it.

1:00:28SPEAKERYeah.

1:00:29SPEAKERI'm not sure if these were just mock-ups or if, I mean, you know, the SDK I assume is

1:00:33SPEAKERout there.

1:00:34SPEAKERYeah.

1:00:35SPEAKERBut the SDK wouldn't show that because that, that part has the SDK has probably been hush

1:00:40SPEAKERhush until yesterday.

1:00:41SPEAKERThat's fair.

1:00:42SPEAKERDo they not do, well, you've never made an iPhone app, but like I have, have you, yeah,

1:00:46SPEAKERwe made an iPhone app at foo.

1:00:48SPEAKEROh wow.

1:00:49SPEAKERI did not know that.

1:00:50SPEAKERYeah.

1:00:51SPEAKERWe did face capture using iPhone.

1:00:52SPEAKERI assumed they did like the play day thing where you can like a little simulator on.

1:00:56SPEAKERYeah.

1:00:57SPEAKERAnd then an iPhone 12 or 10, 10 the old, they, they, they do not leak the shape of the new

1:01:03SPEAKERiPhone and the new iPhone features in the SDK.

1:01:05SPEAKERThat's fair.

1:01:06SPEAKERI mean, a lot of, a lot of the leaks do come out of the SDK, but it's more like, you know,

1:01:11SPEAKERfunction names and stuff like that.

1:01:12SPEAKERAPI calls.

1:01:13SPEAKERWell, it's, that's why when like they have new widget formats, like they do in iOS 16,

1:01:18SPEAKERoften you don't see the new apps until the day the thing ships, like the iOS developers

1:01:23SPEAKERwho care about that stuff will be desperately working to integrate that, those new API calls

1:01:27SPEAKERin.

1:01:28SPEAKERSo that like Spotify music preview, Spotify album art previews in the, in the dynamic,

1:01:34SPEAKERin the, in the capsule, the dynamic island, dynamic island.

1:01:38SPEAKERSorry.

1:01:39SPEAKERIt's like this, this is like the followup to the lonely island.

1:01:42SPEAKERIt's like their next there.

1:01:43SPEAKERIt's like the next evolution.

1:01:44SPEAKERIt's like Jefferson airplane to Jefferson Starship, lonely island to dynamic island.

1:01:48SPEAKERHey, I mean, summer just started in the Bay area as usual.

1:01:51SPEAKERSo no, no better time for a dynamic island getaway.

1:01:56SPEAKERThe front facing camera area is a lot smaller than it was before.

1:01:58SPEAKERIt's a lot thinner than it was before.

1:02:01SPEAKERAnd it's because they put the depth sensor that face ID uses behind.

1:02:05SPEAKERIt's more behind pixels now.

1:02:10SPEAKERI can't, I think my take on this is, I think it seems pretty cool.

1:02:14SPEAKERI don't, I didn't, I have to stop you and have you repeat what you just said.

1:02:18SPEAKERYou, you literally just said the sensor is underneath screen now.

1:02:22SPEAKERThe depth sensor is.

1:02:23SPEAKEROkay.

1:02:24SPEAKERYeah.

1:02:25SPEAKERSo that's one step closer.

1:02:26SPEAKERYeah.

1:02:27SPEAKERI mean the camera, the camera is still has to have transparent pixels on top of it.

1:02:31SPEAKERYeah.

1:02:32SPEAKERThat's the thing they seem to not.

1:02:33SPEAKERSo, I mean, you know, the rumors out of like analysts supply chain E type spaces have been

1:02:37SPEAKERsteady for years that they've been trying to find a way to bury all of this under the

1:02:41SPEAKERscreen.

1:02:42SPEAKEROh, I'm sure.

1:02:43SPEAKERBut I'm sure, I'm sure for an optical camera, that's not a trivial problem to solve.

1:02:46SPEAKERYeah.

1:02:47SPEAKERIt's like a grid that you have to deal with.

1:02:49SPEAKERAnd anyway, they demoed it minimizing album art, like, like literally they showed the

1:02:55SPEAKERperson swiping the Apple music app up into the top bar of the thing.

1:02:59SPEAKERAnd it showing a little tiny, like 50 by 50 pixel album art cover, which is kind of cool.

1:03:06SPEAKERThat's neat.

1:03:07SPEAKERThat's kind of cool.

1:03:08SPEAKERLike, I don't know that it's going to change my life or make me feel better about how I

1:03:10SPEAKERuse the phone or whatever, but it's neat.

1:03:12SPEAKERIt's kind of neat.

1:03:15SPEAKERIt also I like it's, I think it's an aptly, the reason I said it's the most aptly solution

1:03:21SPEAKERto a problem ever is because it only works if you control both how the notifications

1:03:26SPEAKERare displayed in the OS and how the hardware is built because like the Android manufacturers

1:03:33SPEAKERare going to knock this off and they're going to do terrible, terrible things.

1:03:35SPEAKERI think for the next few years before they, before Google eventually like replicates it

1:03:40SPEAKERnotifications.

1:03:41SPEAKERYeah.

1:03:42SPEAKERSo interestingly when you do this on a phone running iPhone 13, running the beta, the notification

1:03:50SPEAKERbar is more traditional.

1:03:51SPEAKERSo like when I play music on my phone and I swipe the music app up, it doesn't do the

1:04:00SPEAKERthing.

1:04:01SPEAKERIt just goes back like that.

1:04:02SPEAKERIt shrinks back to the app.

1:04:03SPEAKERSo this is a, that, that is a 14 pro specific feature.

1:04:07SPEAKERAnd then the other thing, the other two things about the display are that it's always on.

1:04:12SPEAKERSo like it does the same thing that the watch does where it kind of tones down, it seems

1:04:16SPEAKERlike it gray scales out or tones down the image a little bit and has like the time.

1:04:21SPEAKERAnd they've built these new kind of monotone widgets into the, into the home screen.

1:04:28SPEAKERSo you can do like your fantastical calendar, like there's a spot for three to four small

1:04:34SPEAKERsquare or rectangular sized widgets.

1:04:37SPEAKERIs there, do you know if, is there any like actually shot off a phone footage out there

1:04:42SPEAKERof what the always on looks like at this point?

1:04:43SPEAKERLike not a manicured like product introduction video.

1:04:47SPEAKERI I'm sure that somebody has it up on the things that are probably posting today or

1:04:51SPEAKERposted late last night that I haven't seen yet.

1:04:53SPEAKEROkay.

1:04:54SPEAKERYeah.

1:04:55SPEAKERCause I mean, you know, Apple put out like side by sides, but those are obviously pretty

1:04:56SPEAKERtightly controlled.

1:04:59SPEAKERI assume they're pretty representative of the real thing.

1:05:02SPEAKERYeah.

1:05:03SPEAKERI mean, like there are things that I don't trust them to be representative on necessarily

1:05:07SPEAKERlike D2X, the noise cancellation and stuff like that.

1:05:12SPEAKERI feel like the pictures are usually pretty representative of what the actual item looks

1:05:16SPEAKERlike.

1:05:17SPEAKERAnd I would assume it's going to be very similar to how the watch works because it's basically

1:05:21SPEAKERthe same technology.

1:05:22SPEAKERYeah, for sure.

1:05:23SPEAKERYeah.

1:05:24SPEAKERThese side by sides, I mean like it is, it's significantly dimmer colors are pretty washed

1:05:28SPEAKERout, but like the important information is there.

1:05:31SPEAKERYou can see the time.

1:05:32SPEAKERYou can see the notifications.

1:05:34SPEAKERIt's worth mentioning.

1:05:35SPEAKERThis is an, this is a Android feature from like eight years ago.

1:05:39SPEAKEROkay.

1:05:40SPEAKERYeah.

1:05:41SPEAKERIt's, it's, it has, it has a Android when Android phones started shipping OLEDs in like,

1:05:47SPEAKERI don't know, 2013 or 2014 probably first pixels I think were had always on screens

1:05:54SPEAKERfor exactly the same stuff, time and, and a couple of notifications and maybe a widget

1:05:58SPEAKERis burn in I assume still is not a problem that has been entirely solved with OLED, right?

1:06:02SPEAKERI have not ever experienced burn in with my iPhone.

1:06:05SPEAKERWell, are you keeping them long enough though?

1:06:07SPEAKERAlso you don't, you haven't had one of those.

1:06:08SPEAKERI mean I kept my iPhone 10 until the 13 came, until the 12 came out, so it's four years

1:06:13SPEAKERI think.

1:06:14SPEAKERBut even that wasn't always on though is what I mean.

1:06:16SPEAKERIt sat on my, it sat on a charger on my desk on a lot.

1:06:19SPEAKERAnyway, I don't know.

1:06:23SPEAKERI have not heard any, I've not heard any complaints about OLED burn in on the iPhone.

1:06:26SPEAKERIt's almost been exclusively related to TVs for what it's worth.

1:06:30SPEAKERYeah.

1:06:31SPEAKERIt would be easy enough for Apple to wiggle, wiggle the stuff on the screen so that it's

1:06:35SPEAKERnot a problem.

1:06:36SPEAKERYeah.

1:06:37SPEAKERI, I gotta tell you, I mean, are we done talking about the pro?

1:06:40SPEAKERNo, there's a couple other things to hit.

1:06:42SPEAKEROkay, I'll just finish while you're looking at footage of the dynamic island.

1:06:45SPEAKERI was gonna say this, the other thing is that the display gets insanely bright now.

1:06:49SPEAKERYes.

1:06:50SPEAKERThere's only 2,000, 2,000 nits I want to say.

1:06:52SPEAKERIt caps at 2,000 nits, which is nuts.

1:06:55SPEAKERYeah, because I mean, I'm nuts for nits, you know, I really liked a dynamic, a dynamic

1:07:02SPEAKERisland to get away as a title for this, but nuts for nits is also damn good.

1:07:08SPEAKERI haven't kept up with TV tech super closely the last couple, three years, but I mean,

1:07:12SPEAKERI know like even, even like relatively recent nice OLED TVs are like 600 nits like across

1:07:19SPEAKERthe screen, across the entire screen.

1:07:21SPEAKERThe 14 non-pro is 1200 nits peak, 800 typical, TVs don't have to get as bright because usually

1:07:27SPEAKERthey're in controlled viewing situations, right?

1:07:28SPEAKERYou're not, you're not outside in, in the desert watching, looking at your phone.

1:07:33SPEAKERAnd also, and also again, that's, that's like the entire screen at max brightness, like

1:07:37SPEAKERwhen it's localized, they can go a lot brighter in smaller areas.

1:07:41SPEAKERSo the thing that this is interesting for is like even, even driving in the car through

1:07:46SPEAKERthe central valley in California during the summertime, 2000 nits is, is like my, my phone

1:07:53SPEAKERis dim in the car driving through the valley in the summer.

1:07:57SPEAKERLike it's, it's hard to see the screen sometimes, especially if you're wearing sunglasses.

1:08:02SPEAKERIf you're in the desert, it's, it's, it's rough.

1:08:04SPEAKERIf you're in the snow, it's rough.

1:08:06SPEAKERSometimes if it's sunny in the snow I'm, I'm interested to see what this looks like.

1:08:11SPEAKERLike I want the, I want the other thing is that you're going to get brighter HDR video,

1:08:15SPEAKERsupposedly on it.

1:08:17SPEAKERIt keeps peaks at 1600.

1:08:19SPEAKERThey say a thousand nits is typical for the screen.

1:08:22SPEAKERAnd I believe the battery measurements were measured at a thousand nits, but I'm not that

1:08:26SPEAKERthat footnote was not written in a clear way.

1:08:30SPEAKERAnd it, and like the other one, this is eSIM only.

1:08:32SPEAKERThe last thing is the cameras.

1:08:33SPEAKERThey have the image stabilization as well.

1:08:36SPEAKERThe, the, the, the sensor, the lenses are a 24 millimeter, 1.7 F7, F1 7.8, 1.78 main

1:08:46SPEAKERcamera, a 48 millimeter F 1.7, eight two X zoom, sorry, three, sorry, I messed this

1:08:52SPEAKERup a 24 millimeter F 1.78 main camera, which is like a normal, Hey, I want to take a picture

1:08:57SPEAKERof somebody that's like four feet from me lens, the 13 millimeter F 2.2 ultra wide,

1:09:03SPEAKERwhich is like panorama wide, wide shot, you know, fish eye kind of thing a 77 millimeter

1:09:09SPEAKERF 2.8, three X zoom.

1:09:12SPEAKERAnd then they have a fourth, fourth fixed zoom stop on the, on the camera app.

1:09:18SPEAKERThat's a 48 mil F 1.7, eight two X zoom that's faked by using the center 12 megapixels of

1:09:26SPEAKERthe main camera sensor.

1:09:27SPEAKERSo it's a 48 megapixel camera sensor.

1:09:30SPEAKERMost people, if you're not shooting raw are going to shoot 12 megapixel cameras where

1:09:33SPEAKERthey sample each pixel four times to reduce noise, just on the, on the device.

1:09:39SPEAKERIf you care about noise reduction and you want to, you can shoot in a raw format.

1:09:44SPEAKERAnd do you do the denoising yourself with whatever, whatever tool you want pro pro photographers

1:09:49SPEAKERor care about them.

1:09:52SPEAKERThey showed landscape blow ups that were like six feet tall on walls of galleries for this,

1:09:58SPEAKERwhich is, which is kind of nuts for a phone I'll I'm again, this is the thing I would

1:10:03SPEAKERlike to see landscapes are like the easiest thing to do that with, because like you can

1:10:08SPEAKERdenoise the landscape really easily.

1:10:09SPEAKERIf you have like a moving child or something, a moving person, it's going to be a lot harder.

1:10:13SPEAKERBut yeah, the camera looks camera as always looks good.

1:10:19SPEAKERAnd then they have the normal stuff about the bionics, a 16 bionic being the fastest

1:10:24SPEAKERbest seven it's 16 billion trans it has 16 billion transistors, which is nuts.

1:10:28SPEAKERYeah.

1:10:29SPEAKERSo just to close the loop on my confusion earlier, this has been the model for several

1:10:32SPEAKERyears now that the only the pro gets the new SOC and the regular gets the previous pros

1:10:38SPEAKERSOC.

1:10:39SPEAKERIs that correct?

1:10:40SPEAKERI believe that that started with the 12, but it may have been last year.

1:10:43SPEAKEROkay.

1:10:44SPEAKERThey they've been saying so since they, since they started selling the thousand dollar phones.

1:10:47SPEAKERSo when the 10 came out, they sold the 10 and the eight, the same year and the eight

1:10:52SPEAKERwas the $600 phone, the 10 was the, was the thousand dollar phone.

1:10:57SPEAKERThey started making bigger the next, the next year or the year after they started making

1:11:00SPEAKERa big pro and a small pro, they didn't call them pros at that point.

1:11:05SPEAKERBut I believe the 12 is when they started selling an iPhone non pro and an iPhone pro

1:11:10SPEAKERthe naming on the, on the, that, that, that started when they went from two cameras to

1:11:15SPEAKERthree cameras actually.

1:11:17SPEAKERAnd the naming on the, on the iPhone whole line is a mess cause like iPhone pro versus

1:11:23SPEAKERiPhone like the, the big iPhone 14 is called the plus.

1:11:28SPEAKERThe big iPhone pro is called the max.

1:11:31SPEAKERThere's still a plus.

1:11:32SPEAKERThe plus is the big iPhone 14.

1:11:34SPEAKERWhat?

1:11:35SPEAKERWhy wouldn't they just use max for big phone across the line?

1:11:39SPEAKERBecause they want max to be the one that they, that is clear.

1:11:42SPEAKERThe best one.

1:11:43SPEAKERDude, what happened?

1:11:44SPEAKERI look at their product naming, they've never, look, everybody always says they used to be

1:11:50SPEAKERgood at product naming.

1:11:51SPEAKERThey've never been good at product naming.

1:11:52SPEAKERI mean, maybe, maybe not at one, at one point they had a Mac book, a Mac book air, a Mac

1:11:57SPEAKERbook pro and like, it's, it's always been a mess.

1:12:01SPEAKERI mean, like I've always just kind of admired, I mean, look, Steve jobs, a huge asshole like

1:12:05SPEAKERto be clear every time you praise Steve jobs, I feel like to like reassure people, I guess

1:12:09SPEAKERI get it.

1:12:10SPEAKERHe was a piece of shit in a lot of ways, but like that whole thing about him coming back

1:12:14SPEAKERin in the late nineties and just like flushing their entire product line.

1:12:17SPEAKERAnd he was just like, okay, we make four computers.

1:12:20SPEAKERNow we make a desktop for consumer and professional and we make a laptop for consumer and professional.

1:12:25SPEAKERThat's it.

1:12:26SPEAKERVery much.

1:12:27SPEAKERSo like they, they have gotten so far away from that philosophy again at this point,

1:12:32SPEAKERBut I mean, also they sell a billion phones a year and like that market segmentation is

1:12:37SPEAKERimportant.

1:12:38SPEAKERThey also sell the 13 mini still like the 13 and 13 mini are still available.

1:12:43SPEAKERThe 12 is still available.

1:12:44SPEAKERLike there there's, there, there are two small phones.

1:12:47SPEAKERThere's one with the button for the old people.

1:12:48SPEAKERAnd there's the one with this face ID for the Young's there's like, it, it, it, it,

1:12:56SPEAKERthis is a problem with their level of, with the level of the scale at which they operate.

1:13:00SPEAKERI think that's maybe unavoidable.

1:13:02SPEAKERI don't know.

1:13:03SPEAKERFair.

1:13:04SPEAKERI feel like the name scheme could still be more consistent, but whatever, like the people

1:13:07SPEAKERwho can, who know, we'll figure out what they want.

1:13:10SPEAKERThe people who don't are, we'll ask someone who does, I guess, and this phone is toilet

1:13:15SPEAKERsafe too.

1:13:16SPEAKERJust like the back on 14.

1:13:18SPEAKERYou can rest easy then.

1:13:19SPEAKERThey made it waterproof because that's the, that was the number one way that people broke

1:13:23SPEAKERtheir phones was dropping it in the toilet.

1:13:25SPEAKERIt was a PP proof.

1:13:27SPEAKERAll right.

1:13:28SPEAKERLook, I didn't ask, luckily, luckily in our toilet incident, it was, it was a clean bowl.

1:13:33SPEAKERSo that was a, okay, that's good.

1:13:35SPEAKERThat was a good day.

1:13:36SPEAKERThat was the upside.

1:13:38SPEAKERSo remind me again from the cold open, what's your timeline?

1:13:41SPEAKERWhich one did you get?

1:13:42SPEAKERAnd when I got the 14 pro max, I I've traditionally been a four, a pro non-max and I realized since

1:13:50SPEAKERI never wear pants that don't have big pockets, I just was like, I'm going to get the big

1:13:53SPEAKERone and not buy an iPad so I can read comics better on it.

1:13:56SPEAKERNow that is embracing middle-age if I've ever heard it's, it's not, it's look, if I had,

1:14:02SPEAKERif I had gotten the non-max non non-max, I would have it next week, so I'm being punished.

1:14:08SPEAKEROkay.

1:14:09SPEAKERSo we will have, we will have hands-on impressions then of I'm sitting here looking at this at

1:14:14SPEAKERtheir pitch video for the dynamic Island and watching it expand and get bigger and add

1:14:18SPEAKERart to it.

1:14:19SPEAKERAnd it looks fun, right?

1:14:20SPEAKERIt looks neat.

1:14:21SPEAKERYeah.

1:14:22SPEAKERThis is, this is a market improvement over the shitty notch.

1:14:26SPEAKERWow.

1:14:28SPEAKERAnti-notch pro Island.

1:14:29SPEAKERI'm not going to say I'm pro Island, I would like for this to go away eventually, but this

1:14:32SPEAKERlooks way better.

1:14:33SPEAKERSo Tina gets her phone next Friday.

1:14:35SPEAKERI'll let you know how it is then.

1:14:37SPEAKEROkay, cool.

1:14:38SPEAKERThe like all in all, this was, I think a pretty typical Apple event, you know, iPhone announcement.

1:14:45SPEAKERI think the watch ultra, the ultra watch is, is it was a kind of a surprise that it was

1:14:50SPEAKERactually something good.

1:14:51SPEAKERYeah.

1:14:52SPEAKERI expected it to be like an updated edition, which is now a dead product.

1:14:55SPEAKERThey don't have a new edition watch this year.

1:14:57SPEAKERHuh?

1:14:58SPEAKERYeah.

1:14:59SPEAKERIt seems like that's replaced that I, I am staring at this watch stuff, unsure of what

1:15:04SPEAKERto do.

1:15:05SPEAKERWell, I mean, look, I know your normal purchasing cycle for this sort of thing.

1:15:09SPEAKERSo when they do the ultra two next year, you'll be in a good spot.

1:15:12SPEAKEROh, should wait.

1:15:13SPEAKERSo you're saying just wait another year.

1:15:14SPEAKERNo, I'm just saying that's what you're going to do regardless of what you want to do.

1:15:17SPEAKERSo like I said, I was planning to buy a watch here.

1:15:19SPEAKERI mean like the, did we even talk about the watch, the new se, I guess, are they calling

1:15:23SPEAKERit the se two or does it like, it's basically the same one with the, with the newer S O

1:15:28SPEAKERS S I C S I P whatever that thing is two 49 and it's got the same guts as the good ones.

1:15:35SPEAKERIt doesn't have the always on screen.

1:15:37SPEAKEROh, it does not, which is, which is like, like the always on was a deal breaker.

1:15:41SPEAKERThat's probably a deal breaker actually.

1:15:43SPEAKERAnd the bigger battery is like, like you, the, the battery life is important.

1:15:48SPEAKERLike the difference between it, making it all day, most of the time and making it 36

1:15:53SPEAKERhours when you don't do a workout and easily 29 or 30 when you do, it was pretty substantial

1:15:59SPEAKERfor me.

1:16:00SPEAKERI wonder what the kind of trade in cycle resale value of watches is.

1:16:04SPEAKERIf you keep them in good shape, I assume pretty healthy.

1:16:06SPEAKERI don't, I, I I'll let you know in a year or two, I'm not getting a new watch until

1:16:10SPEAKERthis year, unless I decide to splurge and get an ultra, which I was just imagine like

1:16:14SPEAKERmaybe I get the cheapest eight right now and then like, like trade up and two or a couple

1:16:20SPEAKERyears or something.

1:16:21SPEAKERSo part of the problem is that the cheapest state is going to be the small size, which

1:16:24SPEAKERis going to look dainty for you.

1:16:26SPEAKERI don't need the cheapest, but like, not the extravagant, like top of the line eight.

1:16:30SPEAKERI think like probably no sell.

1:16:33SPEAKERYeah.

1:16:34SPEAKERI think no sell.

1:16:35SPEAKERI'm like, I'm, I'm curious.

1:16:37SPEAKERI don't know.

1:16:38SPEAKERLike if at this point, if I were buying a watch, I would either buy that one or the

1:16:40SPEAKERultra.

1:16:41SPEAKERI think that's the thing.

1:16:42SPEAKERLike I, I love the look of the ultra, but I can't fucking justify $800.

1:16:46SPEAKERI mean, my guess is that the resale value of like, if you, if you sell the eight dirt

1:16:52SPEAKERwhile the eight is the current hotness, your resale value will probably be pretty good.

1:16:57SPEAKERSo if you decide you want to upgrade soon, also you have 14 days to send it back.

1:17:01SPEAKERIf you really like it, you just get the eight and any, I don't know.

1:17:05SPEAKERI like, I don't, this is the first time I would not feel bad buying the expensive watch.

1:17:10SPEAKERYou think so even, I mean, you, you even said earlier, like maybe wait for the second gen

1:17:13SPEAKERof that thing.

1:17:14SPEAKERI mean, I, I would definitely wait for reviews.

1:17:17SPEAKERAnd if the reviews are good from people who actually use it for diving or whatever thing

1:17:20SPEAKERyou want to use it for you know, maybe, maybe throw the dice.

1:17:23SPEAKERYou think, you think the watch hardware has plateaued?

1:17:25SPEAKERI mean, you were, you were like the number one on the list of people who were upset about

1:17:32SPEAKERthe not ready for primetimeness of the original Apple watches.

1:17:36SPEAKERAnybody who bought the first three or four years worth of Apple watches kind of got screwed.

1:17:40SPEAKERYeah.

1:17:41SPEAKERLike the way, look, the way I look at it, a watch is a five plus a year item.

1:17:45SPEAKERAnd that, especially at that price point, like, like a 50 or a hundred dollars Seiko

1:17:50SPEAKERshould be a five year item, right?

1:17:51SPEAKERRight.

1:17:52SPEAKERA $500 Apple watch should be long, five years or longer minimum.

1:17:55SPEAKERAnd none of those watches lasted five years.

1:17:59SPEAKERSo like, is the seven going to last five years?

1:18:02SPEAKERI don't know.

1:18:03SPEAKERAt least they're replacing batteries in them now.

1:18:05SPEAKERSo like, I, I feel, I feel reasonably okay.

1:18:10SPEAKERI'm I'm curious if they maintain the water resistance on the ultra.

1:18:14SPEAKEROnce you replace the battery, be I'm curious if they made the battery big enough that they

1:18:18SPEAKERdon't have to dip into the top and bottom 20% so that the batteries will last a dramatically

1:18:23SPEAKERlonger number of charge cycles and that stuff will come out and reviews we'll find out.

1:18:28SPEAKERSo the other thing is like stuff like the dive computer is not a built in feature.

1:18:32SPEAKERIt's a thing you have to subscribe to a service for, which is I like given how easy it is

1:18:37SPEAKERto turn on and off app subscriptions on iOS with the app store.

1:18:42SPEAKERI kind of don't mind that because this is like, I'm not a, I am not a diving, even at

1:18:48SPEAKERmy most diving this, I wasn't a dive dive every month person.

1:18:51SPEAKERI was, I would sign up for it when I was going diving and turn it off the next month.

1:18:55SPEAKERSure.

1:18:56SPEAKERSo yeah, like I thought it was pretty good.

1:19:00SPEAKEROne thing that it does always stand out when we talk about Apple stuff is that they give

1:19:04SPEAKEReverything stupid fucking names that make it really hard to know what they're talking

1:19:08SPEAKERabout.

1:19:09SPEAKERSo they talked about the photonic engine and I was madly Googling to find out what the

1:19:11SPEAKERhell they were talking about because I couldn't remember that one.

1:19:14SPEAKERAnd it turns out that's the machine learning applied to low light photos.

1:19:17SPEAKEROh, of course.

1:19:18SPEAKERYeah, of course.

1:19:19SPEAKERMakes sense.

1:19:20SPEAKERThere's a bunch of others.

1:19:21SPEAKERWe talked about some of them.

1:19:23SPEAKERThe internal hardware not changing is probably okay.

1:19:29SPEAKERLike these are much more stable products than they used to be.

1:19:32SPEAKERRight.

1:19:33SPEAKERYeah.

1:19:34SPEAKERThat's that's the big thing.

1:19:35SPEAKERI mean, that's power consumption is lower, which is probably the best outcome for phones

1:19:39SPEAKERat this point.

1:19:40SPEAKERSure.

1:19:41SPEAKERYeah.

1:19:42SPEAKERLike I don't, I don't expect them to get faster, but I do like batteries that last longer or

1:19:44SPEAKERbatteries that are smaller.

1:19:45SPEAKERSo they weigh less.

1:19:46SPEAKERWhat are the other, yeah.

1:19:50SPEAKERAnd let's see.

1:19:51SPEAKERThe other big thing that they didn't have is there's no wifi 60 in these phones, which

1:19:55SPEAKERis like the brand.

1:19:56SPEAKERIt's like 60 is brand spanking new.

1:19:58SPEAKERSo I'm not super surprised at the previous or even this version.

1:20:02SPEAKERI mean, I assume they have regular wifi six, right?

1:20:04SPEAKERYeah.

1:20:05SPEAKERThe 13 has regular wifi six.

1:20:08SPEAKERI don't, I don't, it doesn't feel like an omission this year.

1:20:13SPEAKERThere's not really a huge downside to not having 60 device to having 60 devices, non

1:20:18SPEAKER60 devices on your 60 network.

1:20:20SPEAKERIf you have one of the handful of routers or APs that support 60 right now it seems

1:20:25SPEAKERlike it'll be a problem if they don't have it next year, but, but they never like they

1:20:29SPEAKERalmost never support the brand new standards right out of the box.

1:20:32SPEAKERRight.

1:20:33SPEAKERThis is, this is Apple being Apple.

1:20:37SPEAKERAnd then the other thing is all of these run iOS 16, which having been running the beta

1:20:42SPEAKERfor the last week, week or so, it's, it feels like a really big update.

1:20:46SPEAKERYeah.

1:20:47SPEAKERI'm curious about a lot of the stuff they're doing, which we do an iOS 16 episode.

1:20:51SPEAKERDo people want to hear that?

1:20:52SPEAKERDo people want to hear that?

1:20:54SPEAKERLet us know.

1:20:55SPEAKERYeah.

1:20:56SPEAKERIn the comments or on the discord server.

1:20:58SPEAKERYeah.

1:20:59SPEAKERSend your email to tech pod@content.town and we'll we'll tell you redesigning and allowing

1:21:04SPEAKERcustomization of the lock screen is kind of big for a company that has been very set in

1:21:08SPEAKERits ways and a UI capacity on the platform.

1:21:12SPEAKERI'm going to say that that is, is a side effect of the work that they've done on the focus

1:21:17SPEAKERon the focus system, like the anti-distraction stuff, because you can tie the lock screens

1:21:22SPEAKERand the home screen layouts and the home screens that you choose to focus individual focus

1:21:27SPEAKERscreens, which is, which to me says, Hey, we think health is important, which probably

1:21:31SPEAKERmeans we think that the damage we're doing to your attention span with these devices

1:21:35SPEAKERis an issue.

1:21:37SPEAKERAnd thus we're going to make a address that with some software design.

1:21:42SPEAKERThis very morning we were getting ready for this podcast.

1:21:44SPEAKERI was like, I had a whole course of action laid out in front of me, I was brushing my

1:21:49SPEAKERteeth.

1:21:50SPEAKERIt's like, okay, I need to make coffee.

1:21:51SPEAKERI'm gonna feed the guinea pigs.

1:21:52SPEAKERI'm gonna do X, Y, and Z morning stuff.

1:21:55SPEAKERYeah.

1:21:56SPEAKERAnd then I cut my phone in the middle of that stuff.

1:21:57SPEAKERAnd like next thing I knew I had just been standing there for five minutes looking at

1:22:00SPEAKERthe phone and completely forgotten what I was doing.

1:22:02SPEAKERLike it's my favorite thing to look at that.

1:22:04SPEAKERIsn't my child.

1:22:05SPEAKERI think there are some, there are some, I mean, this is not some great revelation.

1:22:08SPEAKERThere are some insidious psychological things going on.

1:22:12SPEAKERYup.

1:22:13SPEAKERSo maybe we'll talk about it soon.

1:22:16SPEAKERSound off in the comments below.

1:22:18SPEAKERSo I think like rather than just go feature by feature down the list and talk about all

1:22:22SPEAKERthe stuff that they've added.

1:22:24SPEAKERThe thing that's interesting to me is, is talking about how, how we're like, I'm curious

1:22:29SPEAKERhow you're going to integrate that stuff.

1:22:31SPEAKERAnd if you're going to fool with it, cause it's a little fiddly to set up, but even a

1:22:34SPEAKERweekend, I'm already feeling the benefits of like at nighttime when I shouldn't be on

1:22:39SPEAKERmy phone as much, the home screen looks like the planet earth and it's the earth at night.

1:22:43SPEAKERAnd you know, the daytime when I'm at work and I want to look at my phone and see something

1:22:47SPEAKERthat makes me happy.

1:22:48SPEAKERI look at my child and you know, the, the different lock screens and the different home

1:22:53SPEAKERscreen layouts and the different widgets on the home screen and stuff turns out I think

1:22:56SPEAKERare super useful.

1:22:57SPEAKERI need to make one for when we're podcasting.

1:22:58SPEAKERYeah.

1:22:59SPEAKERMaybe we should talk about that.

1:23:00SPEAKERThat, that just goes to more general, like mobile device usage habit stuff that is probably

1:23:05SPEAKERinteresting to get into.

1:23:06SPEAKERSo after, after, after that drops on, we both have used it.

1:23:10SPEAKERYeah.

1:23:11SPEAKERAnd, and immediately that stuff integrates across the, like you can change your watch

1:23:15SPEAKERhome screen.

1:23:16SPEAKERLike you could all do a lot of this stuff before with shortcuts, but it works much better

1:23:19SPEAKERand it's much more, it's much easier to set up now.

1:23:24SPEAKERThe other thing that changed, I don't know if they talked about this during the event

1:23:27SPEAKERbecause I might've missed it.

1:23:29SPEAKERBut there's the Apple care plus now supports unlimited damage repairs.

1:23:33SPEAKERIt used to be that you had like two a year, I think.

1:23:38SPEAKERAnd it's with, with, with a, with a fee each time you always had the fee, it's 29 bucks

1:23:41SPEAKERfor a screen or back glass, 99 bucks for like, I assume other stuff, which is like backing

1:23:46SPEAKERover your phone with your car or something.

1:23:48SPEAKERI suppose, I don't know.

1:23:51SPEAKERIt's ongoing subs get converted over to that.

1:23:54SPEAKERIt's unclear if you bought the single payment last year, like, like, like the single payment

1:24:02SPEAKERApple care, when you bought your last device, if that gets rolled over to the new thing

1:24:05SPEAKERas well.

1:24:06SPEAKERAnd that's it.

1:24:10SPEAKERIt was, I like, I don't know.

1:24:11SPEAKERI enjoyed, I enjoyed, I'm, I'm more excited about iOS 16 than I think anything else, but

1:24:16SPEAKERthe, the, the, the capsule, the, what is it?

1:24:18SPEAKERThey call it the dynamic, dynamic Island.

1:24:20SPEAKERIt's just such a stupid name.

1:24:22SPEAKERI know.

1:24:23SPEAKERI love it.

1:24:24SPEAKERThe, the, the, the dynamic Island seems neat.

1:24:28SPEAKERYou're going to get a new phone, Brad.

1:24:30SPEAKERIt just sounds tropical.

1:24:31SPEAKERYou know, like it conjures, it conjures images of a tropical getaway, a tropical vacation.

1:24:35SPEAKERSee, I've been playing a lot of Fortnite, so I was thinking it was a capsule.

1:24:39SPEAKERLike I expect to open that thing and there'll be like a command man there.

1:24:42SPEAKERMaybe a Nimbus cloud, you know, the first time you move your Spotify album art.

1:24:46SPEAKERUp into the dynamic Island, it's just like you're sitting on a beach, sipping a Mai Tai.

1:24:50SPEAKERWhich Jimmy Buffett album are you going to load first, Brad?

1:24:52SPEAKERThat's the question.

1:24:53SPEAKEROh, also, no, I just bought a phone three months ago.

1:24:56SPEAKERI'm not buying a new phone.

1:24:57SPEAKERYou could give that one to your parents is the thing.

1:24:59SPEAKERJust pass that down the line.

1:25:00SPEAKERI am perfectly happy with the very inexpensive iPhone that is working just fine that I bought.

1:25:05SPEAKERAnd it's very responsible of you.

1:25:06SPEAKEROkay.

1:25:07SPEAKERI guess that's it for us.

1:25:10SPEAKERYeah.

1:25:11SPEAKERThanks for this is the part of the show where we think our patrons, this is a long episode.

1:25:14SPEAKERYeah.

1:25:15SPEAKERYeah.

1:25:16SPEAKERCause it was very information dense.

1:25:17SPEAKERLet us know if you're still into, you know, Apple episodes, recap episodes, like current

1:25:21SPEAKERevents type stuff.

1:25:23SPEAKERYou know, there's a Google event next month.

1:25:25SPEAKEROh, do you mean a mobile event?

1:25:28SPEAKERI believe it's, I believe it's a pixel slash related devices event.

1:25:33SPEAKERShould we do an Android episode?

1:25:35SPEAKERIt's a good question.

1:25:36SPEAKERShould we, I mean, I would have to get my hands on like modern Android hardware to speak

1:25:40SPEAKERor run blue stacks.

1:25:41SPEAKERI guess.

1:25:42SPEAKERI don't know.

1:25:43SPEAKERLet's find out if people want that by emailing tech pod@content.town or posting in the discord

1:25:49SPEAKERin the episode ideas form, which was created last last last week, week before.

1:25:54SPEAKERYes.

1:25:55SPEAKERBut now we want to thank our patrons because as always, Brad and Will made a tech pod is

1:25:59SPEAKERa 100% listener supported podcast.

1:26:01SPEAKERSo thank you, patrons.

1:26:03SPEAKERThank you, patrons.

1:26:04SPEAKERAnd a very special thank you.

1:26:06SPEAKEROh, if you would like to find out how to support the show, I should tell you that because that's

1:26:09SPEAKERimportant.

1:26:10SPEAKERIt's it's early today.

1:26:11SPEAKERYou can go to patreon.com/techpod.

1:26:13SPEAKERThat's patreon.com/techpod.

1:26:15SPEAKERAnd for as little as two bucks a month, you can sign up to help us keep the show going.

1:26:20SPEAKERAs always a very special thank you to our executive producer, to your patrons, including

1:26:24SPEAKERpaddle Creek games, makers of fractured veil, Andrew Slosky, but he crimes and the return

1:26:29SPEAKERto work blues period wedge Joel Krauska Twinkie has a new pick in place.

1:26:34SPEAKERAnd James Kammack.

1:26:35SPEAKERThank you all so much.

1:26:36SPEAKERWe appreciate you.

1:26:37SPEAKERYes, we do.

1:26:38SPEAKERAnd I think, oh, wait, there's a new FOSS pod this week.

1:26:42SPEAKEROh, right.

1:26:43SPEAKERWe posted a, an Octo print episode of, of the false pod with Gina Huesca, we had a fantastic

1:26:48SPEAKERconversation with Gina about Octo print and what it's like maintaining a, like an essential

1:26:53SPEAKERpiece of software for a three D printer users and where she is with the project and what's

1:26:58SPEAKERcoming next and, and how it's changed her life both for the good and kind of for the

1:27:03SPEAKERbad too.

1:27:04SPEAKERWe, we talked, we got into, we kind of got into it.

1:27:06SPEAKERIt was good.

1:27:07SPEAKERIt was a good talk.

1:27:08SPEAKERNot only, I mean, you know, she talked about working on the project and, and open source

1:27:10SPEAKERand et cetera, et cetera.
