134: Another Lane Disaster Waiting to Happen

2022-05-08 · 1:20:18

00:00SPEAKER- I watched "Purple Rain" for the first time last week.

00:03SPEAKER- What? - Yeah.

00:05SPEAKER- Ever? - Ever.

00:06SPEAKER- Were you alive in 1984?

00:08SPEAKERWell, I was alive in 1984

00:09SPEAKERand I also didn't see "Purple Rain" then,

00:11SPEAKERbut I mean, come on, man.

00:12SPEAKER- Yeah, look, if you had seen "Purple Rain" in 1984,

00:14SPEAKERthat would have changed my entire life probably.

00:16SPEAKERI would have been walking around with a cane.

00:20SPEAKERLook, I don't think I fully understood

00:22SPEAKERwhat "Purple Rain" was.

00:23SPEAKER- Yeah, okay, hang on.

00:25SPEAKERWhat did you think it was

00:25SPEAKERbefore we get to what it actually is?

00:27SPEAKER- Did you ever see U2's "Rattle and Hum"?

00:29SPEAKER- I have not.

00:31SPEAKER- So it's a concert movie and there's like,

00:33SPEAKERI assumed it was like concerts

00:35SPEAKERwhere there were like little skits.

00:37SPEAKERMaybe the concerts were in the story,

00:38SPEAKERbut there were like little skits between

00:40SPEAKERthat kind of connected the concert bits to each other.

00:42SPEAKER- Well, it is a concert film of, after a fashion,

00:45SPEAKERyou got part of it, right?

00:46SPEAKER- I mean, it's a movie, it's a good ass movie.

00:49SPEAKER- It is, yes.

00:50SPEAKERI mean, look, there's a certain amount of cheese involved

00:52SPEAKERor melodrama, let's say.

00:53SPEAKERI think melodrama is maybe the word.

00:55SPEAKER- It's a product of the time.

00:56SPEAKER- Yeah, well, I think it probably, you know,

00:58SPEAKERit reflects Prince's personality, right?

01:00SPEAKERLike, it's weird 'cause like he cultivated

01:02SPEAKERsuch an air of like mystique and distance, you know?

01:05SPEAKERLike he was always this like kind of unreachable figure.

01:08SPEAKER- Yeah.

01:09SPEAKER- But then all the stories you hear about him

01:10SPEAKERbehind the scenes just hanging out with people,

01:12SPEAKERhe's like a giant goofball.

01:13SPEAKER- Yeah, and like it's super dramatic

01:16SPEAKERand kind of like really intense

01:19SPEAKERfor like a rock and roll movie.

01:20SPEAKER- Yes, it does.

01:21SPEAKERThe stuff with the father toward the end

01:23SPEAKERdoes get like pretty hardcore.

01:25SPEAKER- Both the father and the mother

01:26SPEAKERand like him being, him hitting,

01:29SPEAKERI guess we're gonna do light spoilers

01:30SPEAKERfor a 30 or 40 year old movie now.

01:33SPEAKERBut like he hits his girlfriend

01:34SPEAKERand like there's all this other stuff.

01:35SPEAKER- Oh gosh, I forgot about that part.

01:37SPEAKER- Yeah, like it's brutally honest about,

01:42SPEAKERfor a movie that opens with,

01:44SPEAKERyo, this is loosely autobiographical,

01:46SPEAKERit's pretty, it's like unflinching in a way

01:50SPEAKERthat I wasn't expecting.

01:52SPEAKERAnd also it's like him saying goodbye

01:54SPEAKERto his youthful friends and like moving forward

01:58SPEAKERwith the revolution.

01:59SPEAKERI don't know, man, it's a good movie.

02:01SPEAKER- Also Morris Day and the Time.

02:03SPEAKER- Fucking Morris Day and the Time.

02:05SPEAKERLike there was a moment that I was really taken by

02:09SPEAKERwhere he's like walking down the street

02:11SPEAKERand he goes into this bridge

02:12SPEAKERand on one hand, on the left side,

02:14SPEAKERthere's graffiti that's just written in black spray paint,

02:17SPEAKERjust like plain ass black letters that says music.

02:20SPEAKERAnd on the right side, it says God.

02:22SPEAKERAnd I was like, if I had seen this in the 80s,

02:23SPEAKERI wouldn't have understood this message,

02:25SPEAKERbut now I get it, man.

02:27SPEAKERHe's walking between two worlds.

02:31SPEAKER- Symbolism.

02:32SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, symbolism, man.

02:34SPEAKER- Also, also the concert, the performance scenes, just.

02:37SPEAKER- Oh yeah.

02:38SPEAKER- Unlike anything else.

02:39SPEAKER- I mean, the other thing you had forgotten is like

02:43SPEAKERthat kind of like, like that early 80s time,

02:45SPEAKERthere was a period where like the synchronized dancing,

02:48SPEAKERall of the drifters in the 60s moving forward,

02:51SPEAKERstill people were doing in a way that like

02:54SPEAKERbecame a boy band thing just after this, I guess.

02:56SPEAKER- Sure, kind of, yeah, I get what you're saying.

02:58SPEAKERI mean, like he's very much coming out of like the,

03:00SPEAKERlike James Brown and like funk.

03:03SPEAKERI mean, that's what I love about Prince so much

03:04SPEAKERis he's such a fusion of like rock and funk and R&B

03:08SPEAKERand like that era of performance

03:11SPEAKERwith the James Brown style stage moves.

03:13SPEAKERYeah, it's a good time.

03:14SPEAKERDid you know that the album cut of Purple Rain

03:17SPEAKERis just a live performance at a show?

03:19SPEAKERLike the main, like the main release of Purple Rain

03:25SPEAKERis live?

03:25SPEAKER- On the album, like I don't even mean live in the studio

03:27SPEAKER'cause like, you know, like a lot of bands will just,

03:29SPEAKERyou know, track each part separately

03:32SPEAKERand mix it after the fact.

03:33SPEAKERBut sometimes they'll just record live together

03:36SPEAKERin the studio.

03:37SPEAKERI don't even mean that.

03:38SPEAKERI mean, like it's literally from a show

03:39SPEAKERthey played in Minneapolis.

03:41SPEAKER- Wow.

03:41SPEAKER- It's that tight.

03:42SPEAKERLike that's how, that is the level of musicianship.

03:44SPEAKER- Yeah, it's an incredible movie.

03:46SPEAKERI was, it was not all I was expecting.

03:48SPEAKERI thoroughly enjoyed it and I thought of you

03:50SPEAKERas I was watching it, so.

03:51SPEAKER- Well, thank you.

03:51SPEAKERIt's a great time.

03:52SPEAKERIt's a great time.

03:53SPEAKERI hope this podcast, okay, hold on.

03:56SPEAKERI'm not going to compare this episode,

03:58SPEAKERthis podcast to Purple Rain.

03:59SPEAKER- No!

04:01SPEAKER- If the forthcoming episode is even one 10 billionth

04:04SPEAKERas enjoyable as Purple Rain,

04:07SPEAKERthen I think we have done our jobs.

04:08SPEAKER(upbeat music)

04:18SPEAKER(upbeat music continues)

04:36SPEAKER- Welcome to Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod.

04:38SPEAKERI'm Will.

04:39SPEAKER- I'm Brad.

04:40SPEAKER- How you doing, Brad?

04:41SPEAKER- I'm doing well.

04:42SPEAKERI didn't think to ask you before we started recording

04:44SPEAKERif you set up the audio queue for this episode.

04:46SPEAKER- I did not.

04:47SPEAKERI completely forgot about that.

04:49SPEAKER- Oh, boy.

04:49SPEAKEROh, but let's see.

04:50SPEAKEROkay, hang on.

04:52SPEAKERShould I just start Googling?

04:53SPEAKEROkay, we're going to need, we're going to need a ding.

04:55SPEAKERWe're going to, okay,

04:56SPEAKERwe're going to need a positive sound and a negative sound.

04:58SPEAKER- Okay, so like Price is Right fail horn?

05:00SPEAKER- Hmm.

05:01SPEAKER- I can do that just with my phone into the microphone.

05:03SPEAKER- I have that's, that might be a little trite at this point.

05:07SPEAKERI love that thing.

05:08SPEAKERDon't get me wrong.

05:09SPEAKER- Wow.

05:10SPEAKER- It's a little bit overused.

05:11SPEAKER- Really?

05:12SPEAKER- At this point.

05:13SPEAKER- Does it come up that often for you?

05:14SPEAKER- I think so.

05:14SPEAKER- It doesn't come up that often for me.

05:15SPEAKERThank you for trying to like, oh, okay, okay.

05:19SPEAKERHow about this one?

05:22SPEAKERThat's not bad.

05:23SPEAKEROkay, all right.

05:24SPEAKERThat's a pretty deep cut.

05:25SPEAKERI was thinking like a,

05:26SPEAKERI was thinking like a basketball game,

05:28SPEAKERlike Shot Clock buzzer, like a (imitates buzzer)

05:31SPEAKERSomething like that.

05:32SPEAKER- Oh yeah, okay.

05:32SPEAKERI don't have one of those.

05:33SPEAKER- We need, we need a positive sound and a negative sound.

05:35SPEAKERI was thinking like a hotel lobby bell ding

05:38SPEAKERfor the good one.

05:39SPEAKER- Like a, like a, like a, like the,

05:40SPEAKERlike the one that if you screw it down too hard,

05:42SPEAKERit doesn't actually ding.

05:43SPEAKERThere's no resonance.

05:44SPEAKER- It's like, you're talking about like the,

05:46SPEAKERthe classic silver chrome, yeah.

05:49SPEAKERIt's an audio podcast.

05:50SPEAKERThey can't see you whack your hand down like that.

05:52SPEAKER- I'm trying, I'm just verifying with you.

05:55SPEAKERI've never taken one of those apart before.

05:57SPEAKERI didn't realize.

05:57SPEAKERI mean, I guess that makes sense.

05:58SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like screwed down.

06:00SPEAKEROkay, so that, so I would describe that as the classic,

06:05SPEAKERthe classic Mac, this one.

06:08SPEAKER(bell dings)

06:10SPEAKER- That's not bad.

06:11SPEAKEROkay, what do they call that?

06:12SPEAKERChime?

06:13SPEAKER- No, that's bell.

06:13SPEAKERThat's chime.

06:14SPEAKER- Oh, I just, it just hit me.

06:15SPEAKERWe should do an episode

06:16SPEAKERabout operating system event sounds sometime.

06:19SPEAKERHave we done that before?

06:20SPEAKER- No, we should absolutely do that though.

06:22SPEAKER- Should we do that?

06:23SPEAKER- We didn't do a sound.

06:23SPEAKERWe did a, we did a bit about sound

06:26SPEAKER'cause we talked about the Brian Eno sound

06:27SPEAKERfrom Windows 95 being the most expensive piece

06:29SPEAKERof music ever composed.

06:31SPEAKERBut I think that's it.

06:32SPEAKERHow about this one?

06:33SPEAKER(bell dings)

06:36SPEAKER- That's like a Scooby-Doo mystery sound.

06:38SPEAKER- Yeah, that one's a little too,

06:39SPEAKERI almost want to say sinister.

06:41SPEAKER(bell dings)

06:43SPEAKER(upbeat music)

06:48SPEAKER- I think we're getting a little too elaborate

06:49SPEAKERat this point.

06:50SPEAKER- Should we just, should we just move on?

06:52SPEAKER- A simple high pitched, bright sort of ding.

06:55SPEAKEROkay.

06:56SPEAKERWhat are we doing here?

06:58SPEAKERWhy are we employing this audio technology?

07:00SPEAKER- Okay, so we had a hard time

07:02SPEAKERcoming up with an episode this week,

07:03SPEAKERwhich happens occasionally, but not that often.

07:06SPEAKER- It's funny.

07:07SPEAKER- Yes.

07:08SPEAKER- I think we first met Monday evening

07:10SPEAKERtrying to come up with an episode topic.

07:12SPEAKER- Look.

07:13SPEAKER- So we kept trying all week and came up with nothing.

07:14SPEAKERBut then when we finally hit on one yesterday,

07:17SPEAKERwe also hit on like three others right at the same time.

07:20SPEAKERSo now we have the next month of episodes.

07:21SPEAKER- Yeah, so like, so again, when it rains, it pours.

07:25SPEAKERThis episode, when we were describing it to each other,

07:30SPEAKERwe decided to pitch it as legitimate grievance or not.

07:33SPEAKER- Okay, yes.

07:35SPEAKERThat's, I think that's a good way to put it.

07:37SPEAKER- Yeah, so-

07:37SPEAKER- Grievance or whining?

07:41SPEAKER- Grievance or peeve, maybe?

07:44SPEAKER- Peeve?

07:45SPEAKER- Peeve, like a peeve seems inconsequential.

07:47SPEAKERLike the idea is, is this something that it's okay

07:50SPEAKERfor you to be upset by or are you being,

07:53SPEAKERlike the notch is a perfect example of this.

07:55SPEAKER- Oh, come on now, let's don't bring it.

07:58SPEAKERI was not going to bring it up.

07:59SPEAKER- I just, this whole thing is an excuse

08:01SPEAKERfor me to give you more grief about the notch.

08:03SPEAKER- I'm not gonna, I don't even know what you're talking about.

08:04SPEAKER- Okay, anyway, the point is we're gonna,

08:08SPEAKEReach of us is gonna describe something

08:10SPEAKERthat annoys us about computers or computing or technology.

08:13SPEAKERAnd then the other person is going to,

08:15SPEAKERwe're gonna talk through it a little bit

08:16SPEAKERand then we're gonna make a judgment.

08:18SPEAKERWe're gonna say, "No, Brad, I think your fears

08:21SPEAKERabout the notch are a peeve.

08:22SPEAKERThey're not a legitimate grievance."

08:24SPEAKER- The way you put it when we were brainstorming this episode

08:26SPEAKERwas you're being a dipshit.

08:28SPEAKERIs this a legitimate grievance

08:29SPEAKERor are you just being a dipshit, is what you said.

08:32SPEAKER- Yeah, so, and if you disagree with us,

08:35SPEAKERwe'd love to hear about it.

08:36SPEAKERYou can post in the Discord, you can add us on Twitter,

08:37SPEAKERyou can send us an email to techpod@content.town.

08:41SPEAKER- Yeah.

08:42SPEAKER- Okay, do you want to kick it off?

08:43SPEAKERYou want me to kick it off?

08:44SPEAKER- I think you have one more than I do,

08:45SPEAKERso why don't you go first.

08:46SPEAKER- Oh, I have a long list at this point.

08:47SPEAKER- It'll wrap around, and so at the end of each one,

08:51SPEAKERI guess we will seal the deal with a good sound

08:53SPEAKERor a bad sound.

08:54SPEAKER- So this started with Windows 11 when I was,

08:59SPEAKERwhen we were talking about this,

09:00SPEAKERI was looking at my taskbar and for some reason,

09:03SPEAKERthe icons, the last icon on the row

09:06SPEAKERoccasionally gets overlapping the one that is before it.

09:10SPEAKER- Ooh, ew.

09:10SPEAKER- Which is, which is, just to be clear,

09:13SPEAKERlike seemingly the only way to fix it

09:15SPEAKERis to drag the icons around a little bit or just reboot.

09:19SPEAKERIt's not good.

09:20SPEAKER- Is it, I mean, am I putting the card before the horse here

09:22SPEAKERby saying that is absolutely legitimate grievance?

09:24SPEAKERThat's gross, how does that happen?

09:26SPEAKER- I don't know, it makes me really sad and upset

09:28SPEAKERevery time it happens, though.

09:30SPEAKER- They've been making Windowses for a very long time.

09:34SPEAKER- We did a list ranking of them.

09:35SPEAKER- You know, now that Windows 11's out,

09:36SPEAKERwe can redo that, we can have a whole new,

09:38SPEAKERI mean, that could upend the entire Apple cart.

09:41SPEAKER- Okay, what is your snap judgment?

09:42SPEAKERWhere does Windows 11, don't even pull up the list,

09:44SPEAKERjust gut feeling, where would Windows 11

09:47SPEAKERland on a list of Windows?

09:50SPEAKER- Probably between 10 and seven.

09:52SPEAKER- Okay, wait, really?

09:54SPEAKER- Maybe below, maybe one notch below

09:56SPEAKERwhichever one's the low one there.

09:57SPEAKER- That's pretty high, but I guess it seems like people,

09:59SPEAKERit seems like people like Windows 11.

10:00SPEAKER- I don't have a beef with it, really.

10:02SPEAKERIt's generally better than Windows 10, I would say.

10:04SPEAKER- Now that they brought double monitor clock back.

10:08SPEAKER- Double monitor clock fixed about 80% of my issues,

10:10SPEAKERit turns out.

10:11SPEAKER- I can't, I just, I still am shocked

10:13SPEAKERthat people even run taskbar on second monitor,

10:16SPEAKERbut I digress.

10:17SPEAKER- Well, when I'm playing a game,

10:18SPEAKERI like to have the clock, so I know what time it is.

10:20SPEAKER- That's fair, I use my play date for that now.

10:23SPEAKER- Well, fair, I mean, but yeah, look,

10:26SPEAKERmy play date was immediately co-opted by my wife, so.

10:28SPEAKER- Oh no.

10:29SPEAKER- Look, it's fine, I'm happy she's enjoying it.

10:31SPEAKER- Okay.

10:33SPEAKER- So you think this is a legitimate grievance?

10:35SPEAKER- Well, is it literally just this graphical glitch,

10:37SPEAKERlike just the icons overlapping?

10:39SPEAKERIs there, 'cause wasn't there also something about,

10:40SPEAKERlike they took away certain functionality

10:42SPEAKERabout hiding tray icons or something like that?

10:46SPEAKER- You can't hide the network and sound icons anymore.

10:51SPEAKERI think, I don't know why that is.

10:53SPEAKERMy guess is that the only people who did that

10:56SPEAKERwere, did it by accident and then couldn't find them

10:59SPEAKERand were confused and it caused a support issue.

11:01SPEAKER- I have to disagree strongly.

11:03SPEAKER- I know, you and I use ear trumpet

11:04SPEAKER'cause we're good people,

11:05SPEAKERbut most people don't know about ear trumpet.

11:07SPEAKER- Right, yeah, so we talked about it,

11:08SPEAKERif you haven't listened to last week's FOSPOD,

11:10SPEAKERwe talked about ear trumpet among others

11:12SPEAKERas a piece of open source software

11:13SPEAKERthat we like and recommend.

11:15SPEAKEREar trumpet is just a way, way better volume icon

11:18SPEAKERin Windows that adds a whole bunch of functionality

11:20SPEAKERfor changing audio devices quickly,

11:22SPEAKERfor sending specific apps to different audio devices,

11:26SPEAKERlike it's--

11:26SPEAKER- Yeah, like you can literally, if you want Spotify,

11:29SPEAKERlike I have speakers and a headphone hooked

11:30SPEAKERto different outputs on my computer.

11:32SPEAKERWhen I want Spotify to come out of the speakers,

11:34SPEAKERI just drag Spotify up to the top of the list

11:36SPEAKERand it goes into the, it comes out the speaker,

11:38SPEAKERit's like magic, it's fantastic.

11:39SPEAKER- It's super elegant, it's awesome.

11:41SPEAKEREar trumpet, go get it.

11:42SPEAKERBut the use case is that it looks exactly

11:44SPEAKERlike the default Windows volume icon.

11:47SPEAKERThey're indistinguishable unless you mouse over them

11:49SPEAKERor click them, so the idea is that you hide the default one

11:52SPEAKERand use ear trumpet instead,

11:53SPEAKERbut if you can't hide the default one--

11:55SPEAKER- I think that that is the only legitimate use

11:58SPEAKERI've ever heard of for hiding the default volume icon.

12:03SPEAKER- I agree.

12:03SPEAKER- Yeah, anyway.

12:04SPEAKER- I agree.

12:05SPEAKER- So it's like, the functionality is if you wanna click

12:09SPEAKERon the icon that's underneath the one on the top,

12:11SPEAKERit's indeterminate which one you get, it seems like.

12:14SPEAKERSometimes you get the right one,

12:15SPEAKERsometimes you get the left one.

12:16SPEAKER- That's bad, that is genuinely bad.

12:18SPEAKERAlso, I'm gonna say, if you wanna broaden this

12:20SPEAKERto just like general Windows 11 taskbar,

12:24SPEAKERshenanigans, is that a word?

12:27SPEAKERThen I would say absolutely legitimate grievance,

12:29SPEAKER'cause you still can't move that thing

12:30SPEAKERto the side or top, right?

12:32SPEAKER- I'm gonna check right now.

12:33SPEAKERIt looks like it, no, it still does not move

12:35SPEAKERto the left side.

12:36SPEAKERYou can left justify it now, though.

12:38SPEAKER- Oh, oh, you mean move all the icons?

12:40SPEAKER- The icons, put 'em all on the left.

12:41SPEAKERI kind of put 'em into 'em on the middle, though,

12:43SPEAKERit turns out.

12:44SPEAKER- Oh, man, I don't know about that.

12:45SPEAKER- It reminds me of OS X and it makes me happy.

12:48SPEAKERI like OS X.

12:49SPEAKER- I don't know about the dock.

12:51SPEAKERNow that I'm back to using Mac OS a lot again,

12:53SPEAKERI wonder if the dock has,

12:57SPEAKERI wonder if the dock's time has come and gone.

12:59SPEAKERMaybe it's time for something new.

13:00SPEAKER- Well, how would you switch icons?

13:01SPEAKER- I don't know, I don't know.

13:02SPEAKER- I don't know.

13:03SPEAKER- Yeah, okay, okay.

13:05SPEAKER- Okay, so you feel like legitimate grievance for this.

13:07SPEAKERI feel like this is a legitimate grievance.

13:08SPEAKER- Yeah, yes, give yourself a ding.

13:11SPEAKER- Ding.

13:13SPEAKER- Okay, we're not even doing the sound effects now.

13:15SPEAKER- I put my phone down, I'm sorry.

13:17SPEAKER- Hold on.

13:18SPEAKERThat's fine.

13:19SPEAKER- This is a good bit.

13:20SPEAKER- Okay, is it, is it really?

13:22SPEAKER- No, that was the wrong game, too, shit.

13:24SPEAKER- I didn't even hear it.

13:25SPEAKER(bell dings)

13:26SPEAKEROur video call is filtering out for me, but okay.

13:30SPEAKER- Okay.

13:31SPEAKER- Great, okay.

13:32SPEAKER- What you got, Brad?

13:33SPEAKERLegitimate grievance or being a dipshit?

13:37SPEAKER(laughing)

13:38SPEAKER- I don't think we can put that in the episode title.

13:40SPEAKER(laughing)

13:42SPEAKEROkay, I may have mentioned this before.

13:45SPEAKERThese monitors that I'm using.

13:48SPEAKER- Just to be clear, these are new monitors that you bought.

13:51SPEAKERThese are not the old 22 inch monitors

13:55SPEAKERfrom the last century.

13:55SPEAKER- Dude.

13:58SPEAKER- You miss them, don't you?

13:59SPEAKER- No, absolutely not.

14:00SPEAKERNothing is ever allowed to go away on the internet,

14:02SPEAKERI have found.

14:03SPEAKER- No, it'll haunt you.

14:04SPEAKERPeople are gonna ask you about that shit for years.

14:06SPEAKER- Like Patrick Leveck tweeted last week

14:09SPEAKERabout some old giant bomb monitors

14:10SPEAKERthat I guess I handled the purchasing for years and years ago

14:14SPEAKERand he still had one or two of them

14:15SPEAKERand he was about to get rid of them

14:16SPEAKERand a bunch of people responded like,

14:18SPEAKER"Oh, give them to Brad, he loves old monitors."

14:19SPEAKERLike, no.

14:20SPEAKER- Do you know what one of those monitors was?

14:22SPEAKER- I have two nice, very modern monitors now.

14:24SPEAKERThe old monitors are long gone.

14:26SPEAKER- One of those monitors was that amazing Sony monitor

14:29SPEAKERthat you could put shutter glasses on

14:31SPEAKERand one person would see one screen

14:33SPEAKERand one person would see the other screen.

14:35SPEAKER- The PSP TV, the giant TV that looked like a PSP?

14:38SPEAKER- I think so.

14:39SPEAKER- That's what that is, yes.

14:40SPEAKERIt was marketed as a TV, not as a monitor.

14:44SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was a TV.

14:45SPEAKER- Obviously.

14:46SPEAKER- It was a very stupid idea

14:47SPEAKERthat was the only time I ever saw that executed, I think.

14:51SPEAKER- Yeah, it didn't get used much, I don't think.

14:53SPEAKER- No, it was completely useless.

14:54SPEAKER- I think there was very little support for that

14:56SPEAKERon the software side.

14:57SPEAKER- Yeah, and it went away with the PS4,

14:58SPEAKERthe moment the PS4 came out.

15:00SPEAKER- Also went away with 3D.

15:01SPEAKERHey, remember 3D?

15:02SPEAKER- Yeah, my daughter the other day was like,

15:04SPEAKER"Hey, I really wanna go see a movie

15:05SPEAKER"where you wear the glasses, Dad."

15:06SPEAKERAnd I was like, "Well, I got bad news for you, kid."

15:20SPEAKERI've got to follow the corporate branding guidelines.

15:22SPEAKER- You've gotta uh that Asus.

15:28SPEAKERthey are 1440p, they are 27 inch,

15:30SPEAKERthey are completely modern,

15:31SPEAKERthey have FreeSync, the whole thing.

15:35SPEAKERThey have auto input select that cannot be disabled.

15:38SPEAKERAnd it has a very, very short timer

15:44SPEAKERif it doesn't detect a signal on the input you've got it on

15:46SPEAKERand it detects a signal on another one,

15:48SPEAKERit will just switch to that other one

15:49SPEAKERafter like two or three seconds of no signal.

15:52SPEAKER- So it means a reboot, it changes inputs?

15:54SPEAKER- It depends.

15:56SPEAKER- What do you have plugged into the monitors?

15:59SPEAKER- Let's see, so the left monitor is my desktop PC.

16:03SPEAKER- Okay.

16:03SPEAKER- Okay, so I've got an HDMI switcher

16:05SPEAKERthat consoles and the mister get plugged into.

16:07SPEAKERThat goes to the HDMI one on both monitors.

16:10SPEAKER- Okay, on both monitors?

16:13SPEAKER- Yes, 'cause it has multi out.

16:17SPEAKERThe switcher has multiple outputs

16:19SPEAKERand depending on what I'm doing,

16:21SPEAKERI might want to switch to that switcher

16:24SPEAKERon one monitor or the other.

16:25SPEAKER- Okay, fair.

16:26SPEAKER- So I have extra inputs and nothing else to do with it.

16:28SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah.

16:29SPEAKER- Input one on both monitors is the desktop PC.

16:32SPEAKERInput two on both monitors is that switcher

16:34SPEAKERso I can have consoles on one or the other.

16:52SPEAKER- Yes, yes, the pass through from the capture card

16:53SPEAKERgoes to input three on my left monitor.

16:57SPEAKERI know this is a lot, I'm sorry.

16:58SPEAKER- Hold on, do you not run the,

17:00SPEAKERso you don't run the consoles into the capture card?

17:05SPEAKER- I do through that switcher.

17:06SPEAKER- Oh, okay.

17:07SPEAKER- It's a long story.

17:08SPEAKERThe switcher is under my desk and there's some permanent,

17:10SPEAKERlike the MiSTer and this Xbox Series S

17:12SPEAKERlive under there permanently.

17:14SPEAKERBut if I have to drag like the PS5 in here,

17:15SPEAKERit's easier to plug it straight into the capture card

17:17SPEAKERand then I go through that switcher.

17:20SPEAKERIt just comes straight out of the pass through.

17:21SPEAKER- That makes sense.

17:23SPEAKER- Anyway, yeah, like doing live streaming or capture

17:26SPEAKERor also running this NAS 24/7,

17:28SPEAKERlike the second, practically the second

17:31SPEAKERit loses signal on an input,

17:32SPEAKERit will just switch to another input,

17:35SPEAKERLike I'm just trying to update the switch

17:39SPEAKERBut now I have to like go in and change the inputs again,

17:41SPEAKERbecause you just can't sit still.

17:42SPEAKER- So I'm going to make a suggestion.

17:45SPEAKERA, I think this is a legitimate grievance

17:46SPEAKER'cause you should be able to turn off auto input switching

17:48SPEAKERon every monitor ever.

17:50SPEAKERThat should never be forced on.

17:51SPEAKER- It's so annoying.

17:52SPEAKER- B, I don't think you should leave your NAS

17:54SPEAKERplugged into the monitor all the time.

17:56SPEAKER- So that's the net result of this

17:58SPEAKERis that I have to just pull the HDMI cable from the NAS

18:01SPEAKERbecause there's no way to make it

18:03SPEAKERnot put output video all the time.

18:05SPEAKER- I can't remember the last time

18:06SPEAKERmy NAS was plugged into a monitor.

18:09SPEAKER- It's come in handy once in a while

21:03SPEAKERYou know how when you're building a computer and,

21:26SPEAKERLike I haven't, like you said,

21:27SPEAKERI haven't touched a very new motherboard in a while.

21:29SPEAKERI assume those were all heat sinks, is that not?

21:33SPEAKERLike the ones over North Bridge

21:35SPEAKERor whatever the modern equivalent of the North Bridge is

23:53SPEAKERLike the cable management is, you know,

23:56SPEAKERbut I think the thing you're talking about,

23:59SPEAKERthe just the aesthetic cover

24:01SPEAKERon a bunch of the motherboard stuff is kind of ridiculous.

24:04SPEAKER- Yeah, well, and also it means that like if a piece,

24:06SPEAKERlike I had an Intel motherboard that like a little,

24:08SPEAKERa little, a little transistor fell off at one time,

24:11SPEAKERlike an S surface mount transistor fell off

24:12SPEAKERand then the network card stopped working.

24:14SPEAKER- Oh, funny.

24:15SPEAKER- So I picked the transistor back up

24:18SPEAKERI put a little bit of solder on the other side

24:19SPEAKERand soldered it back on and guess what?

24:21SPEAKERThe network card started working again.

24:23SPEAKER- Funny how that works as well.

24:24SPEAKER- I unplugged it first, of course, but anyway.

24:26SPEAKER- So I mean, is it not really feasible

24:31SPEAKER- I haven't tried, I haven't even looked.

24:33SPEAKERMy guess is that they snap on, but I don't know for sure.

24:36SPEAKER- What motherboard maker?

24:45SPEAKERyou're going to have those over at least

24:46SPEAKERa big chunk of the board.

24:47SPEAKER- It's just the way things are going.

24:49SPEAKERWhat kind is yours though?

24:50SPEAKER- Well, mine doesn't, I didn't buy one that did that,

24:52SPEAKERbut, but mine does have a big heat sink

24:54SPEAKERnext to the center center hole,

24:55SPEAKERwhich like mine has a functional heat sink

24:57SPEAKERin a place that it, that it probably has to be,

25:00SPEAKERbut it's annoying because like every time

25:02SPEAKERI try to put the screw in that one, it falls.

25:04SPEAKERMy last motherboard solved that problem by,

25:06SPEAKERor my last case rather solved that problem

25:08SPEAKERby making the one that's hard to get to a pin.

25:11SPEAKERSo like you have one, instead of a screw,

25:14SPEAKERyou just put the hole on this pin

25:16SPEAKERand then it's kind of like a pivot

25:17SPEAKERfor the rest of the board.

25:19SPEAKERAnd then you screw the rest of the holes down.

25:20SPEAKERCause like realistically,

25:21SPEAKERyou don't need like four screws probably in a motherboard.

25:24SPEAKERYou don't need all eight or nine or whatever it is.

25:25SPEAKER- Yeah, that's fair.

25:27SPEAKERThe little bit of guesswork that goes along

25:29SPEAKERwith building a computer these days,

25:30SPEAKERspecifically about clearances,

25:32SPEAKERlike as heat sinks have gotten so big for example,

25:34SPEAKERlike the kind of nail biting moment

25:36SPEAKERwhere you put everything together

25:38SPEAKERand try to figure out if the heat sink

25:39SPEAKERis going to clear the RAM or not, is not fun.

25:42SPEAKER- When Nvidia announced 3090s and you were like,

25:45SPEAKER"This looks just like a 3080."

25:46SPEAKERAnd then you looked at the specs and you're like,

25:47SPEAKER"Oh wow, it's like three inches longer."

25:49SPEAKERAnd nobody knew if their cases were going to fit

25:52SPEAKERthe 3090s at that point yet.

25:53SPEAKERThere was a lot of like, can I,

25:55SPEAKERyou like a friend of mine had a 3090,

25:58SPEAKERgot a 3090 cause it was the video card

26:00SPEAKERyou could get when it was ordered.

26:01SPEAKERAnd he's like, "Is this going to fit in my case?"

26:03SPEAKERAnd I was like, "Man, I have no idea."

26:04SPEAKERLike the specs say it should,

26:06SPEAKERbut it's going to be really, really close.

26:09SPEAKERAnd we ended up having to take out his front drive bay

26:12SPEAKERin order to fit it in because it was like,

26:15SPEAKERlike there just wasn't, like it was long enough

26:17SPEAKERthat there was no clearance.

26:18SPEAKERAnd like, it's inside the PCI express spec.

26:20SPEAKERIt's inside the spec for the slot,

26:23SPEAKERbut it's just a big ass card.

26:25SPEAKERSo what are you going to do?

26:26SPEAKER- Those things are ridiculously long for sure.

26:28SPEAKERI don't, I can't even imagine how big

26:29SPEAKERthe next generation of G-forces are going to be.

26:32SPEAKERIf any of these leaks about the thermals

26:34SPEAKERon those cards are accurate,

26:36SPEAKERI can't imagine how big they're going to be.

26:38SPEAKER- I saw the one with three fans on the air cooler

26:40SPEAKERand then also a radiator attached to it.

26:42SPEAKERAnd I was like, just damn, it's a lot.

26:45SPEAKER- Is that a 40?

26:46SPEAKER- That was a 4,000 rumor.

26:48SPEAKERI don't know if it's true or not.

26:48SPEAKER- Okay, yeah, I don't know, I don't know how.

26:50SPEAKERWhat's the code name for those?

26:52SPEAKERIs it Lovelace?

26:52SPEAKERI think it's- - Can't remember.

26:54SPEAKER- Let me see.

26:55SPEAKER- I don't think I've announced anything yet, actually.

26:58SPEAKERI think the 40 series, I don't know.

27:02SPEAKER- That would be in line.

27:03SPEAKER- 30 was ampere, 20 was Turing.

27:05SPEAKER- Yeah, mathematicians, computer scientists.

27:07SPEAKER- I don't, I can't, yeah, it might be, or Ada.

27:11SPEAKERIt may be Ada, I'm not sure.

27:15SPEAKER- We'll find out, I mean, I assume we'll find out soon.

27:17SPEAKERIt seems like they're-

27:18SPEAKER- Yeah, seems like the rumors are picking up, but anyway.

27:22SPEAKER- What's your next one, Brad?

27:23SPEAKERSo what's-

27:24SPEAKER- It's turning into a very hardware centric episode

27:28SPEAKERfor better or worse.

27:29SPEAKEROkay, I kind of did a big hardware refresh,

27:33SPEAKERrebuild on my NAS a few months ago.

27:36SPEAKERI swapped the old 5,400 RPM drives out

27:39SPEAKERthat were starting to make some questionable noises.

27:41SPEAKER- Good call.

27:42SPEAKER- With some 7,200 RPM drives.

27:44SPEAKER- Are they just generally louder now?

27:46SPEAKER- So also they're very high density.

27:47SPEAKERAnd I, in the course of putting this thing together

27:49SPEAKERand going, wow, these things are loud,

27:51SPEAKERI'd started looking around and I guess,

27:52SPEAKERI mean, it makes sense mechanically

27:53SPEAKERthat much higher density drives

27:55SPEAKERare also much louder mechanically.

27:58SPEAKERThere's just a lot, there are more platters in there.

28:00SPEAKERThere's more thunking around of the read heads moving

28:02SPEAKERand stuff like that.

28:03SPEAKER- Thunking is not what you want.

28:05SPEAKER- Well, dude, I literally had to do some Googling

28:08SPEAKERafter I installed those things

28:09SPEAKERto make sure they weren't defective

28:10SPEAKERbecause the noises they make when they boot up-

28:12SPEAKER- Did you put them in quiet mode?

28:14SPEAKER- Are disturbing, what is that?

28:15SPEAKER- So most SATA drives you can put in like spinning disks,

28:19SPEAKERyou can put in quiet mode or loud mode

28:20SPEAKERand it'll reduce the aggressiveness of the read head movements

28:24SPEAKERso they click less.

28:25SPEAKER- Well, what is that?

28:26SPEAKERThere's gotta be a downside.

28:27SPEAKER- A little bit of performance impact,

28:28SPEAKERbut not enough that you'd care probably for a nose.

28:31SPEAKER- Definitely not for as high performance as,

28:32SPEAKERwow, I should look into that.

28:33SPEAKERIs that something you enable at the firmware level?

28:36SPEAKERLike some kind of manufacturer utility?

28:38SPEAKER- You either do it on the firmware level

28:39SPEAKERor you can maybe do it with smart, I can't remember.

28:41SPEAKERThere's a way you could do it in BSD, I think.

28:43SPEAKER- Okay, I'll check.

28:44SPEAKERAlso these drives are plugged into a SAS card.

28:46SPEAKERSo I don't know if that makes a difference or not,

28:48SPEAKERbut we'll see.

28:49SPEAKERI should look into that though because

28:50SPEAKERwhere I'm going with this

28:51SPEAKERis not only are these things really loud,

28:53SPEAKERlike the noise that drives themselves make is tolerable,

28:56SPEAKERbut when I put them into,

28:57SPEAKERI've got another fractal case that that machine lives in,

29:00SPEAKERthey rattle the hell out of that case.

29:02SPEAKERAnytime they do anything remotely heavy,

29:05SPEAKERit's the rattling that is killing me.

29:06SPEAKERIt's not the sound of the drives themselves.

29:08SPEAKERIt's a vibration in the case.

29:11SPEAKER- So this is a solvable problem.

29:12SPEAKERYou just need to put some rubber gaskets

29:14SPEAKERbetween the screws and the case.

29:16SPEAKER- So I've got that.

29:17SPEAKERSo like this fractal, the drives mount to rubber gaskets.

29:23SPEAKER- Okay.

29:24SPEAKER- Okay, drives mount onto removal trays in this thing.

29:26SPEAKERSo they slide into,

29:28SPEAKERit is like a metal on plastic railing system with a click.

29:31SPEAKERIt snaps in.

29:33SPEAKERAnd then each of those drive trays

29:34SPEAKERhas rubber gaskets that the drives sit on.

29:37SPEAKERSo they're already cushioned in that way.

29:39SPEAKER- I think the gaskets have to be

29:40SPEAKERbetween the rails and the drive.

29:42SPEAKER- So that's the, well,

29:44SPEAKERso there's rubber between the mounting tray

29:47SPEAKERand the drive.

29:48SPEAKER- Huh.

29:50SPEAKERI would, well, but then the mounting tray

29:52SPEAKERis probably gonna rattle.

29:53SPEAKER- That's, I think that's what it is.

29:54SPEAKERI think that's what it is.

29:55SPEAKERSo now I'm thinking, well, first of all,

29:57SPEAKERdo you wanna make your judgment?

29:59SPEAKER- I think that this is probably a legitimate grievance

30:01SPEAKERthat is solvable.

30:03SPEAKER- Okay, it's the machine is four feet away?

30:06SPEAKER- I mean, I think putting your NAS in your office

30:08SPEAKERis also a questionable decision,

30:10SPEAKERbut knowing your apartment situation,

30:11SPEAKERI don't think you have a lot of choices.

30:13SPEAKER- I'm working with a limited amount of space here.

30:15SPEAKER- Yeah, no, I understand.

30:16SPEAKER- If this thing lived in a basement or garage

30:19SPEAKERlike it should, then this would be zero problem.

30:21SPEAKER- Yeah, in the garage, I'm just like,

30:22SPEAKERGina comes in and everyone's like, hey,

30:24SPEAKER'cause of the laundry rooms in our garage,

30:26SPEAKERshe's like, hey, the server's making weird noises again.

30:29SPEAKERI'm like, oh, I'll go listen.

30:31SPEAKER- Hey, the server is louder than the washing machine.

30:33SPEAKERWhat's going on here?

30:34SPEAKER- Yeah, look, man, when we got quiet washing machines,

30:36SPEAKERthere was a period of time when I had a drive

30:38SPEAKERthat was quietly dying and I didn't realize it,

30:40SPEAKERand the server was absolutely louder

30:42SPEAKERthan the washing machine.

30:44SPEAKERAh, domestic bliss, that sounds fun.

30:47SPEAKERSo what, okay, what is your solution here?

30:48SPEAKERI've been thinking over some options,

30:50SPEAKERbut I'm curious to hear what you think.

30:51SPEAKER- So is there a place you can just screw

30:53SPEAKERthe drives into the case?

30:54SPEAKER- No, no, no, they have to mount to those removable trays.

30:58SPEAKERSo my thought is to pad the railing between the tray

31:01SPEAKERand or, you know.

31:02SPEAKER- Can you screw into the tray?

31:04SPEAKER'Cause a lot of time the tray will have

31:05SPEAKERthe quick release rails, but it'll also have a place

31:07SPEAKERthat you can screw in, like on the bottom.

31:10SPEAKER- Wait, I'm not sure what you mean.

31:11SPEAKER- So there's two ways to mount hard drives.

31:13SPEAKERThere's four holes on the bottom of the drive

31:15SPEAKERand there's six holes on the sides of the drive.

31:17SPEAKER- Oh, no, they don't have the side mounts,

31:18SPEAKERif that's what you mean.

31:19SPEAKER- Okay, but can you screw it into the bottom

31:20SPEAKERand just not fuck with the rails at all?

31:23SPEAKERLike not use those rails?

31:25SPEAKER- No, the rails are the only way

31:26SPEAKERthat the tray is attached to the case.

31:27SPEAKER- Oh, okay.

31:28SPEAKERYeah, I don't know then.

31:30SPEAKERI'd have to look at the case design.

31:32SPEAKER- It is a defined Mini.

31:34SPEAKERIt's a pretty old case.

31:35SPEAKERIt's not a Mini C, which is their newer Mini line.

31:38SPEAKERYou legitimately will have a hard time Googling

31:40SPEAKERthe regular defined Mini.

31:41SPEAKER- Okay.

31:42SPEAKER- Mini C has kind of taken over everything,

31:44SPEAKERbut I was thinking like padding the railing

31:48SPEAKERwhere the trays slide in.

31:50SPEAKERI'm not sure with what.

31:52SPEAKER- I was gonna say like I would get some thin rubber gaskets

31:54SPEAKERand put them on the pins that go in on those rails

31:57SPEAKERon the side between the pins and the mount.

32:02SPEAKER- Okay.

32:03SPEAKER- Like on the rails that you snap in.

32:05SPEAKER- Yeah, the clearance is like next to nothing.

32:07SPEAKERI mean, it's probably a millimeter or two.

32:09SPEAKER- You're looking at like two mill, probably rubber gaskets,

32:14SPEAKERand you want it to be tight

32:15SPEAKER'cause you want them to hold it in place

32:16SPEAKERand not just be like the noise.

32:18SPEAKER- Those are like stick on?

32:20SPEAKER- They're probably just gonna have friction

32:22SPEAKERgo in and over the pins.

32:23SPEAKER- So that's my other question is,

32:24SPEAKERwell, what do you mean by pins?

32:25SPEAKERI'm not sure.

32:26SPEAKER- Well, do the rails not have pins that go into the holes

32:28SPEAKERwhere the screws would normally go?

32:32SPEAKER- I don't think so.

32:34SPEAKERThis would be a lot easier

32:34SPEAKERif we had a picture of this in front of us.

32:36SPEAKER- Yeah.

32:38SPEAKER- So, okay, so the TLDR is,

32:40SPEAKERyo, figure out a way to insulate to stop vibrations

32:45SPEAKERfrom transferring from the hard drive into the drive cages.

32:49SPEAKER- Yes, exactly.

32:50SPEAKER- And I don't know what the solution to that is

32:53SPEAKERoff the top of my head.

32:54SPEAKER- You tell me.

32:55SPEAKERI thought about just hitting the discount fabric store

32:57SPEAKERand maybe grabbing a little bit of felt,

32:58SPEAKERcutting some very short strips

33:00SPEAKERand like padding the railing that way.

33:02SPEAKER- Felt circles, probably not a terrible,

33:03SPEAKERlike the thing is you don't want the drives to move,

33:06SPEAKERbut I think felt's probably fine.

33:08SPEAKER- Okay.

33:09SPEAKERLike I think I'd rather put a little bit of,

33:11SPEAKERI mean, I think the ambient temperature in there

33:13SPEAKERis probably, I don't know,

33:15SPEAKERthe CPU sits at like 35 C for the most part,

33:19SPEAKERso I don't have an ambient temperature sensor in there.

33:21SPEAKER- Do you have fans blowing over the drives?

33:22SPEAKER- Yes.

33:23SPEAKER- Yeah, if you have fans blowing over the drives,

33:24SPEAKERit doesn't matter.

33:25SPEAKERJust don't clog the airflow between the drives.

33:27SPEAKER- No, no, no, that would not be a problem.

33:29SPEAKERI was a little reluctant to put either fabric or,

33:31SPEAKERthe other thing I thought about is like some electrical tape

33:34SPEAKERor some painter's tape or something like that in there.

33:36SPEAKER- I wouldn't use tape for this.

33:37SPEAKERI don't think it's gonna do what you want.

33:39SPEAKER- Yeah, and I don't really wanna put anything

33:40SPEAKERwith adhesive in there,

33:41SPEAKERbut I also am not sure I wanna put fabric in there.

33:44SPEAKERI don't know.

33:44SPEAKER- Well, it's not like,

33:45SPEAKERit's not gonna get hot enough to catch the fabric on fire

33:48SPEAKERand you're not gonna block the airflow with the fabric,

33:49SPEAKERso you're probably fine.

33:51SPEAKER- I think I might try that.

33:52SPEAKERI mean, it's like a couple bucks

33:53SPEAKERto grab a little roll of felt, give it a shot.

33:55SPEAKER- Yeah, let it rip.

33:56SPEAKER- Okay, okay.

33:58SPEAKERSo is that a ding?

33:59SPEAKER- Legitimate grievance.

34:00SPEAKER- Okay.

34:02SPEAKERCongratulations, you get another ding.

34:05SPEAKER- All right, ding.

34:06SPEAKER- We are-

34:07SPEAKER- I've now used four different dings.

34:09SPEAKER- We are still at dipshit zero.

34:11SPEAKER- Dipshit zero, us three, I believe.

34:14SPEAKER- I don't know that allowing ourselves to judge ourselves

34:16SPEAKERwas the best call here, but you know,

34:18SPEAKERmaybe people in the Discord will have different thoughts.

34:21SPEAKER- Okay, I've got,

34:22SPEAKERI think this is my best shot at a dipshit here.

34:24SPEAKERI'm gonna open it up.

34:25SPEAKER- All right.

34:27SPEAKER- You know how when you turn your computer on in the morning

34:29SPEAKERand like everything's fine

34:31SPEAKERand then just for like two seconds,

34:33SPEAKERthe monitor turns on and off?

34:35SPEAKER- Wait, I don't think mine does that.

34:38SPEAKER- Okay, so I have never had,

34:42SPEAKERI've only had one DisplayPort monitor.

34:44SPEAKERThe only DisplayPort monitor I've had

34:45SPEAKERthat doesn't have some sort of occasional glitching out

34:49SPEAKERis this 360 Hertz one.

34:51SPEAKERAll the others, like the 60 Hertz 4K one,

34:54SPEAKERmy ultra wide screen, all of those,

34:56SPEAKERthere's always some sort of a DisplayPort glitch

34:58SPEAKERthat happens like two to five minutes

35:00SPEAKERafter you turn the computer on.

35:01SPEAKERAnd then it's fine.

35:02SPEAKER- Really?

35:03SPEAKERLike the signal just blips off for a second?

35:05SPEAKER- Just goes black.

35:06SPEAKERWindows doesn't act like it's disconnected or anything.

35:08SPEAKERIt's just like the screen turns off,

35:09SPEAKERthen it turns back on, everything's cool.

35:11SPEAKER- Geez, man, maybe I should feel more thankful

35:13SPEAKERabout these monitors than I am.

35:15SPEAKER- There's no like functionally, no problem.

35:18SPEAKER- Yeah, I don't know.

35:20SPEAKER- I've literally thought about replacing every monitor.

35:23SPEAKEROver the years, I've replaced every cable

35:25SPEAKERthat plugs into these, no change.

35:27SPEAKERI've used the different, I've used HDMI,

35:29SPEAKERI've used DisplayPort, I've used Thunderbolt.

35:30SPEAKERI've done all of the things that I know to do

35:32SPEAKERto see if there's something like outside of the monitor

35:35SPEAKERthat causes these problems.

35:37SPEAKERAlways happens ever since, ever since I switched,

35:40SPEAKERthe last monitor I had that didn't do this

35:43SPEAKERwas the probably a 30 inch Dell 2560 by 1600,

35:47SPEAKERlike the, one of the big boys.

35:50SPEAKER- Yes, that monster that everybody bought.

35:52SPEAKER- And it used DVI.

35:53SPEAKERSo like, since we've gone to the new,

35:58SPEAKERI'm air quoting better modern standards that all suck.

36:02SPEAKERIt's always been a problem.

36:03SPEAKERThis annoys me to know, like I have legitimately,

36:06SPEAKERlike every once in a while, it'll happen in the morning.

36:08SPEAKERI'm like, the first thing I do is go and look up

36:09SPEAKERM monitor prices.

36:11SPEAKERI'm like, should I just replace this fucking monitor?

36:13SPEAKER- And to be clear, these problems span graphics cards.

36:16SPEAKERThis is not limited to your most recent card.

36:18SPEAKER- Every computer I plug it into.

36:20SPEAKER- Interesting, yeah, you've done a lot of that

36:22SPEAKERwith VR demos and stuff.

36:23SPEAKER- I mean, I'm probably only on Nvidia cards

36:26SPEAKERover during this time span, but like multiple Nvidia

36:29SPEAKERgenerations, multiple video cables.

36:32SPEAKER- Right, to have it span different types of monitors

36:35SPEAKERand different graphics cards and everything,

36:36SPEAKERit's obviously not a problem with one specific thing.

36:39SPEAKER- But just to be clear, it is a problem

36:41SPEAKERthat lasts one second once a day, maybe two seconds.

36:45SPEAKER- So I think I might give you a half C on this one.

36:49SPEAKER- Wow, or generous.

36:51SPEAKER- So in a vacuum, the monitor blipping off

36:55SPEAKERfor a second or two once a day, not a big deal.

36:58SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.

37:00SPEAKER- However, I'm gonna say that there is a level

37:02SPEAKERof like anxiety and mistrust that goes along

37:05SPEAKERwith a display flickering off consistently.

37:08SPEAKERThat's really unpleasant.

37:10SPEAKER- Yeah.

37:11SPEAKER- And in that sense, I think this is totally legitimate.

37:12SPEAKERLike my TV, I don't know if it's the TV or the receiver,

37:15SPEAKERbut something in my entertainment center chain

37:18SPEAKERmakes this happen where like I'll be playing PS5

37:20SPEAKERor Series X and like it's like once a week

37:24SPEAKERor once every two weeks, but like the display

37:25SPEAKERwill just go off for like the sound continues,

37:28SPEAKERbut the video just drops for like three or four

37:31SPEAKERor five seconds.

37:32SPEAKER- Oh yeah, that would make me crazy.

37:33SPEAKER- Which is kind of similar to what you're describing

37:35SPEAKERand like it comes back and it's not a problem,

37:38SPEAKERbut what's going on?

37:39SPEAKERAnd like it just, it engenders a certain degree of like,

37:44SPEAKERI don't know, lack of faith in your stuff.

37:46SPEAKERLike, is this gonna become a worse problem?

37:48SPEAKERWhat is going on here?

37:49SPEAKERThis doesn't make sense.

37:49SPEAKERThis is just a handshaking thing.

37:51SPEAKER- This is like when I plugged in the MiSTer the first time

37:53SPEAKERand it busted the CEC chain on my TV.

37:56SPEAKER- Don't even get me started about that.

37:57SPEAKER- I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on for,

37:59SPEAKERand I thought I was gonna have to replace the whole,

38:00SPEAKERlike I thought everything was bad.

38:02SPEAKERI thought everything was broken.

38:03SPEAKER- Oh my God, I 100% had the exact same experience.

38:06SPEAKER- It required a hard reboot.

38:08SPEAKERLike I had to shut down power to everything

38:10SPEAKERin the entertainment center to unfuck it.

38:12SPEAKERIt was bad.

38:13SPEAKER- I thought I spent a couple of hours thinking

38:15SPEAKERthat my receiver had died the first time

38:16SPEAKERI plugged my MiSTer in and played it on the TV.

38:19SPEAKER- Yeah.

38:20SPEAKER- Because in my case, I don't know if it's like this

38:21SPEAKERwith you, in my case, if I plug the MiSTer in,

38:24SPEAKERit works while I've got it plugged in

38:25SPEAKERand the receiver's on the first time.

38:27SPEAKERBut once I turn the receiver off,

38:29SPEAKERas long as the MiSTer is still plugged into HDMI,

38:31SPEAKERthe receiver will not come back on.

38:32SPEAKERIt's literally just dead.

38:33SPEAKERIt's like bricked.

38:34SPEAKER- Oh, it was worse than that.

38:35SPEAKEROkay, my receiver would come off if I hit the button manually

38:39SPEAKERbut it wouldn't respond to any CEC stuff.

38:41SPEAKER- Okay, mine would even do that.

38:43SPEAKERLike it literally, like the power button did nothing.

38:45SPEAKERLike I thought that it was literally just dead.

38:47SPEAKERAnd the weird part is the second I pull the HDMI

38:50SPEAKERout of the MiSTer, the receiver comes on automatically.

38:53SPEAKER- Oh, weird.

38:54SPEAKER- I have no idea why.

38:55SPEAKERLike, did it queue some power command?

38:58SPEAKERI have no idea.

38:59SPEAKER- Yeah, my--

39:00SPEAKER- Yeah.

39:01SPEAKER- I bought a little like six inch HDMI cable

39:03SPEAKERthat's supposed to strip CEC from Amazon.

39:07SPEAKERI suspect it does not in fact strip.

39:09SPEAKERI really should just do a continuity test

39:11SPEAKERon whichever pin carries CEC.

39:13SPEAKER- I just bought a dongle that works great

39:15SPEAKERand it just stays plugged into the cable

39:16SPEAKERthat the MiSTer plugs into in the living room.

39:19SPEAKER- That's what this is supposed to be

39:20SPEAKERbut I suspect it does not actually disconnect the pin.

39:24SPEAKERIt says it does 'cause it's still a problem.

39:26SPEAKER- I destroyed a pretty nice HDMI cable

39:28SPEAKERtrying to break the one pin from the connector.

39:31SPEAKERIt turns out those pins are too small to pop loose.

39:34SPEAKER- I'm glad to hear you say that

39:35SPEAKER'cause I've thought about doing that.

39:36SPEAKER'Cause I see people occasionally recommend that

39:38SPEAKERof just like, oh, just pull the pin out.

39:40SPEAKER- You need a really, like I have a very small,

39:42SPEAKERtiny set of needle nose pliers and it was not tiny enough.

39:45SPEAKER- Okay, okay.

39:46SPEAKER- You need like jewelers needle noses basically.

39:48SPEAKER- Yeah, I've always thought that actually

39:50SPEAKERhaving the dexterity and tools to do that

39:52SPEAKERwould be pretty difficult.

39:53SPEAKER- I think I could do it with a magnifying glass

39:55SPEAKERand a pair of fine needle noses

39:58SPEAKERbut I didn't have them when I was doing it.

40:00SPEAKERSo you think, this feels like a dipshit to me.

40:03SPEAKEROne second, man.

40:04SPEAKERIt's one second once a day.

40:06SPEAKER- I mean, yeah, again, functionally it's not a big deal.

40:08SPEAKERLike in terms of it kind of undermining your confidence

40:10SPEAKERin your hardware, I could see it.

40:12SPEAKER- I'm beginning to think that maybe

40:13SPEAKERwith our combined level of anxiety

40:15SPEAKERabout computer related stuff,

40:16SPEAKERmaybe this was a flawed episode idea, but you know.

40:19SPEAKER- We're in too deep at this point.

40:22SPEAKERNice, nice, okay.

40:25SPEAKERSee, you can be self-critical after all.

40:27SPEAKER- Yeah, look, if I can't be self-critical, what can I be?

40:32SPEAKER- All right, my next one is a thing

40:35SPEAKERbecause I've been looking at motherboards lately.

40:37SPEAKER- Okay.

40:38SPEAKER- Because I am going to build a new PC

40:39SPEAKERin the coming months.

40:42SPEAKERThere are not enough PCI express slots

40:44SPEAKERon motherboards anymore.

40:46SPEAKER- Hold on, are you sure you're gonna build a new PC?

40:48SPEAKER- 100%.

40:50SPEAKERWait, really?

40:52SPEAKER- I mean, look, I wanna support you in this, Brad.

40:55SPEAKERI think you will too.

40:56SPEAKER- Wait, hang on, which one were you putting the kibosh on?

40:59SPEAKERMy PCI express slot thing?

41:01SPEAKER- No, the PCI express slot is 100% a legitimate grief.

41:04SPEAKER- Okay.

41:05SPEAKER- The you actually building a new PC this year,

41:08SPEAKERI'd say that's a 50/50.

41:09SPEAKER- I can't, I cannot, I cannot do, I just, I have to.

41:13SPEAKERIt has just been too long.

41:14SPEAKER- I mean, like, to be clear in day-to-day operation,

41:18SPEAKERif I'm not doing something compute heavy,

41:20SPEAKERlike compressing something or whatever,

41:22SPEAKERbut just day-to-day windows use,

41:24SPEAKERlike the 7700K is still-

41:26SPEAKER- Yeah, my 2012 MacBook Pro is great too,

41:28SPEAKERas long as I don't use it for anything.

41:30SPEAKER- Come on, come on.

41:34SPEAKERTalking, talking to a friend who works,

41:36SPEAKERlet's say works in CPUs recently, though.

41:38SPEAKER- Yes.

41:38SPEAKER- Someone who has a tremendous amount of hands-on experience

41:41SPEAKERwith different CPUs.

41:42SPEAKER- Yes.

41:43SPEAKER- They told me when I, when I said that,

41:44SPEAKERthey said like, not like, they basically were like, yeah,

41:46SPEAKERthat's probably totally true, but also,

41:49SPEAKERalso I bet you will really feel a difference

41:50SPEAKERwhen you do upgrade.

41:51SPEAKER- You will immediately feel an enormous difference

41:53SPEAKERthe moment you set up a new machine, yes.

41:54SPEAKER- And like, and like reading that

41:56SPEAKERis what actually one of the things that,

41:57SPEAKERI mean, I was already ready to upgrade,

41:58SPEAKERbut reading that was like, oh man, I'm,

42:00SPEAKERwhat if I am missing all of this nice smoothness

42:02SPEAKERthat I could be having.

42:03SPEAKER- And you can move to Windows 11

42:04SPEAKERand then immediately lose all those performance gains.

42:06SPEAKERIt'll be great.

42:07SPEAKER- That's right, that's right.

42:08SPEAKER- This is, this is similar to one of my complaints, actually.

42:12SPEAKER- Yeah, we might be able to merge this one.

42:13SPEAKERWe talked about this a little, like, I think in your case,

42:16SPEAKERit's PCI express lanes.

42:17SPEAKERAnd in my case, it's physical slots,

42:19SPEAKERalthough those are kind of interrelated,

42:21SPEAKERbut like looking at motherboards out there,

42:22SPEAKERlike I've got, let me see, in my PC, as of right now,

42:26SPEAKERI have a, I got a 3080, which takes up two slots.

42:31SPEAKERI've got a USB three expansion card.

42:33SPEAKERI've got a capture card.

42:36SPEAKERAnd I've got that Mellanox network adapter

42:39SPEAKERthat goes between my PC and my NAS.

42:40SPEAKERSo like that's kind of a lot of PCI express stuff

42:43SPEAKERand a lot of the motherboards I'm looking at out there,

42:45SPEAKERI can't even accommodate all of that at this point.

42:47SPEAKER- So, okay, so there's, these are two separate,

42:50SPEAKERbut related problems.

42:52SPEAKEROne is that there's not enough physical slots on the board.

42:55SPEAKERAnd the other is that there are not enough lanes

42:58SPEAKERconnecting the slots to things on the board.

43:00SPEAKER- Right, so I actually, I was hoping

43:02SPEAKERyou could help demystify here,

43:04SPEAKERlike what the actual correspondence is

43:05SPEAKERbetween lanes and slots.

43:07SPEAKERLike, like when you see, when you see a 1X PCIe slot

43:11SPEAKERor an 8X or a 4X or whatever,

43:13SPEAKERdoes that number just refer to the number of lanes

43:15SPEAKERthat is servicing that slot?

43:17SPEAKER- No, when it's a 1X slot,

43:19SPEAKERit means the physical connector.

43:21SPEAKERSo the physical connector determines

43:23SPEAKERthe maximum number of lanes that can be assigned to a slot.

43:25SPEAKERBut the actual number of lanes assigned to the slot

43:27SPEAKERis assigned by the UEFI BIOS in the motherboard.

43:31SPEAKER- Okay, so it's not like a 4X.

43:34SPEAKEROkay, so it's not as simple as a 4X slot has four lanes.

43:37SPEAKER- Well, theoretically that's the maximum,

43:39SPEAKERbut because there's a limited,

43:41SPEAKERthe problem fundamentally is that there's usually

43:43SPEAKERnot enough lanes on the, since there's no Northbridge

43:47SPEAKERanymore, really, the number of lanes that is accessible

43:50SPEAKERare baked into the CPUs.

43:52SPEAKERAnd one of the manufacturers likes to use that

43:55SPEAKERas a marketing differentiator.

43:58SPEAKERAnd one of the manufacturers seems less keen on that.

44:01SPEAKER- One of them just says,

44:02SPEAKER"Here's how many lanes we can do, here you go."

44:05SPEAKER- Yeah, and like everything in that generation,

44:07SPEAKERlike AMD Zen 3 stuff all seems like it has 24 lanes

44:11SPEAKERin the CPU.

44:13SPEAKER- On the, I just checked right before this,

44:14SPEAKERon the, in the desktop space for the Zen 3 chips

44:18SPEAKERfrom the cheap one to the best one, they all have 24 lanes.

44:21SPEAKER- Yeah, so, but like, for example,

44:23SPEAKERon 12th generation Core i5s, you get 20 lanes

44:27SPEAKERand Core i7s, hold on, I'm on arc.intel right now

44:31SPEAKERlooking at this so I don't mess it up.

44:33SPEAKER- Oh, I love a good arc.

44:34SPEAKER- On i9s, you get, I'm looking at the cheapo.

44:38SPEAKER- Wait, is there such a thing as a cheapo i9?

44:40SPEAKER- Well, I mean, it's, there is a less expensive i9.

44:43SPEAKEROh, on the i9, it's 20 lanes.

44:45SPEAKER- Okay, oh wow.

44:46SPEAKER- Yeah.

44:47SPEAKER- I would have expected more.

44:48SPEAKER- In order to get more, you have to get a Xeon,

44:51SPEAKERwhich all of a sudden you're getting

44:52SPEAKERinto like some real, real cheddar.

44:55SPEAKERSo the problem is you can have,

44:58SPEAKERso the problem is everything uses lanes now, right?

45:02SPEAKERSo your video card uses 16 lanes presumably,

45:05SPEAKERor eight, it's 16 lanes,

45:07SPEAKERbut probably it really only needs eight.

45:10SPEAKERYour SSD, your NVMe SSD uses a few lanes.

45:14SPEAKERYour, everything that you plug into USB-C

45:18SPEAKERthat uses the Thunderbolt stuff uses lanes.

45:21SPEAKER- Oh, I didn't know that.

45:22SPEAKER- Yeah, your USB-C controller uses lanes.

45:24SPEAKER- Right, we just went over this in an episode,

45:26SPEAKERwas it last week?

45:27SPEAKER- It was a while ago.

45:28SPEAKER- The Thunderbolt is just PCI express over.

45:31SPEAKER- Yeah, it's just another form factor for,

45:33SPEAKERso think about this as physical layer and software layer,

45:36SPEAKERand like the physical layer in that is a USB-C cable,

45:39SPEAKERbut ultimately it's just PCI express lanes.

45:42SPEAKER- Right.

45:43SPEAKER- So there's not enough,

45:45SPEAKERlike the thing that ends up happening here

45:47SPEAKERis that then you have like these USB-C 3.2 things,

45:51SPEAKERUSB-C 3.2 Gen 3 or whatever the current nomenclature is,

45:55SPEAKERI don't know, it's fucking stupid,

45:58SPEAKERbut you don't have enough lanes is the upshot.

46:00SPEAKERSo even if you had enough slots on the motherboard,

46:03SPEAKERlike I can't, my CPU does not have enough lanes

46:05SPEAKERfor me to put another NVME SSD in the computer.

46:09SPEAKERSo if I want to add more space,

46:11SPEAKERI either have to buy a new NVME SSD,

46:13SPEAKERbackup everything, copy it back on,

46:16SPEAKERor more likely plug them both in at the same time

46:17SPEAKERand have them run at half speed.

46:19SPEAKERBut those lanes are assigned by the motherboard

46:22SPEAKERand there's most motherboard manufacturers

46:24SPEAKERdon't tell you how lanes are gonna be assigned.

46:26SPEAKERSo like, if I had a PCI express SSD,

46:30SPEAKERthere's no way for me to plug it into this motherboard

46:32SPEAKERand get the right number of lanes to it

46:34SPEAKERbecause the motherboard doesn't have the wiring

46:37SPEAKERto assign lanes to slots in the appropriate way

46:39SPEAKERbecause they're assuming everything's a video card

46:41SPEAKERif it's getting plugged into a slot pretty much.

46:43SPEAKER- Sure, which maybe leads us to why the slots

46:46SPEAKERare just slowly disappearing from boards.

46:48SPEAKER- I mean, the upshot is we don't kind of don't like,

46:51SPEAKERthe things that you would plug into slots realistically

46:54SPEAKERare capture cards, video cards, maybe SSDs,

46:59SPEAKERbut probably they're all going in NVMEs now,

47:02SPEAKERin M2 slots now.

47:04SPEAKERAnd maybe like I had an HTC Intel Y gig adapter

47:11SPEAKERfor wireless VR for a while that used one PCI express slot.

47:16SPEAKERIf you need a network adapter,

47:19SPEAKERthat's probably a 1X PCI express slot.

47:23SPEAKERIf you will need more USB ports,

47:24SPEAKER'cause like this is the other thing,

47:26SPEAKERUSB went from supporting like 512 devices per chain

47:29SPEAKERto 128 devices per chain.

47:31SPEAKERAnd also every device is like five devices now.

47:35SPEAKERSo, you know, like my keyboard is four devices, I think,

47:39SPEAKER'cause it's a lighting controller, it's an audio controller,

47:41SPEAKERit's the keyboard, and then it's something else.

47:45SPEAKERI don't know where the other thing is.

47:46SPEAKERAnyway, maybe it's only three devices.

47:47SPEAKERBut yeah, so we need more fucking lanes.

47:50SPEAKERThat's the TLDR.

47:52SPEAKER- More lanes and more slots.

47:53SPEAKERI mean, maybe this is the part

47:55SPEAKERwhere I become a dipshit on this one,

47:57SPEAKERbut it seems like the slots are giving, well,

48:01SPEAKERlet me be even more specific here.

48:03SPEAKERIt seems like the PCI express slots

48:05SPEAKERare giving way to more M.2 sockets, I guess, with the word.

48:09SPEAKERI started saying M.2 slots.

48:10SPEAKER- There's still slots.

48:12SPEAKER- Or sockets or whatever you call them.

48:14SPEAKERIt seems like there is more M.2 and less PCIe slot.

48:17SPEAKER- But I mean, who needs all of those?

48:19SPEAKERThe bummer is you can't use any of them

48:21SPEAKER'cause there's not enough fucking lanes.

48:23SPEAKER- Right, or even, but even if you could, who is,

48:25SPEAKERI mean, I know you can plug other types of devices

48:28SPEAKERbesides storage into M.2, but like-

48:31SPEAKER- Not really, though.

48:32SPEAKER- Well, there are some people I've seen.

48:34SPEAKERThere are AI accelerators now that can plug in

48:37SPEAKERand some USB-based stuff.

48:38SPEAKER- Wow, I didn't know that.

48:39SPEAKERThat's cool.

48:40SPEAKER- And Wi-Fi, there are M.2 Wi-Fi adapters.

48:42SPEAKERAnything that can be USB or PCI express can plug in there.

48:46SPEAKERSo you are starting to see some more non-storage devices

48:49SPEAKERin M.2 form factor.

48:50SPEAKER- But M.2 is just, the thing, it's just a small

48:53SPEAKERPCI express slot.

48:55SPEAKER- Right, but it can also be SATA or USB.

48:56SPEAKER- It can also be SATA or USB, yeah.

48:57SPEAKER- Right, so that's what I mean.

48:58SPEAKERAnything that can go over one of those interfaces

49:00SPEAKERcould theoretically be M.2, but like, put it on a card,

49:04SPEAKERput it on, PCs should have cards in them.

49:06SPEAKER- Well, but the, and the other problem with the M.2 slot

49:08SPEAKERis that it's not, like they're not backwards compatible

49:11SPEAKERin the same way that PCI express is.

49:12SPEAKERLike you can plug a PCI express 1.0 card

49:14SPEAKERinto a PCI express 4.0 slot and it'll still work.

49:18SPEAKER- Yes.

49:18SPEAKER- As long as, assuming it's the right length.

49:20SPEAKER- I would take more slots than more M.2 sockets

49:23SPEAKERany day of the week.

49:24SPEAKERAnd my, my, my feeling is that you only need one

49:27SPEAKERfor your boot drive.

49:28SPEAKERYou're probably good.

49:29SPEAKER- So we're at legitimate grievance on this one, right?

49:31SPEAKER- I, I mean, again, we are judging ourselves here,

49:34SPEAKERbut I think so.

49:35SPEAKER- Okay.

49:37SPEAKER(dramatic music)

49:39SPEAKER- Nice.

49:41SPEAKERGet a little, a little.

49:42SPEAKER- A little late on that one, but I gated it a little bit,

49:44SPEAKERI guess.

49:45SPEAKER- Get a little Polytron action in there.

49:47SPEAKER- A little Fez, real quick.

49:49SPEAKERI was going to say, I don't know if you've seen,

49:51SPEAKERthere are PCI express cards that have multiple M.2 sockets

49:54SPEAKERon them.

49:55SPEAKERSo you could plug multiple SSDs into one card

49:57SPEAKERand put it in the slot.

49:58SPEAKER- I looked at those and I, my, oh, shoot.

50:03SPEAKERSomething that was playing.

50:04SPEAKEROkay. I hit, I hit the, I hit another time by accident.

50:06SPEAKERI looked at those and assume that that is just a,

50:10SPEAKERanother lane disaster waiting to happen.

50:12SPEAKERCause what's going to happen is you're going to take a card

50:15SPEAKERthat wants four lanes and it's going to get one lane each.

50:18SPEAKERAnd you're going to,

50:19SPEAKERyou're going to get four times the storage

50:21SPEAKERand a quarter of the performance across all of those.

50:23SPEAKER- I did, I did think that like whatever kind of controller

50:25SPEAKERis on that card might end up being some kind of bottleneck.

50:27SPEAKER- Yeah. Like my experience trying to get VR shit to work

50:30SPEAKERwith bad USB controllers in the mid 2010s led me to believe

50:34SPEAKERthat I don't want anything that's not soldered

50:36SPEAKERonto the motherboard probably.

50:37SPEAKER- Yeah.

50:39SPEAKER- Okay. Here's one.

50:41SPEAKER- Okay.

50:42SPEAKER- You know, when you finish using your computer

50:43SPEAKERat the end of the night and you're like,

50:44SPEAKERdon't turn it off.

50:45SPEAKERYou walk out of the room and then you come back

50:47SPEAKERsix hours later and the screen's still on.

50:48SPEAKERIt's like just burning full speed there.

50:51SPEAKERWhy doesn't windows go to sleep, Brad?

50:54SPEAKER- Well, first of all, I turn my computer off every night.

50:56SPEAKER- Okay. But you're responsible.

50:57SPEAKERYeah. Look, I like instant.

50:59SPEAKERI can't, if I have to come in here and sit

51:01SPEAKERand wait 30 seconds for it to turn on, I'm going to be,

51:03SPEAKERit's not, that's not a, that's not good for me.

51:06SPEAKER- Yeah. I mean, in fact,

51:07SPEAKERthe damn power company has really started dictating

51:08SPEAKERmy computer usage because we're on that time of use plan.

51:13SPEAKER- Oh yeah.

51:13SPEAKER- So if possible, it usually does not work out this way,

51:16SPEAKERbut if possible,

51:16SPEAKERbecause the electricity gets so much more expensive

51:18SPEAKERat 4.00 PM every day.

51:20SPEAKER- Oh, is it 4.00 PM? It's 3.00 PM for us.

51:22SPEAKER- Oh, is it? We're we're on four to nine,

51:23SPEAKERis our hot zone.

51:24SPEAKER- Over three to 10.

51:26SPEAKER- Interesting.

51:27SPEAKER- Oh, no, no. You're right.

51:28SPEAKERWell, so it goes up to the mid-step it's from three to four

51:31SPEAKERand then from nine to 10 and then four to nine.

51:35SPEAKERIt's like the super high one.

51:36SPEAKER- Interesting.

51:37SPEAKER- But the jump from the mid-step to the super high one

51:39SPEAKERisn't that big.

51:39SPEAKER- They ramp up to full price.

51:41SPEAKERAnyway, I, if possible,

51:42SPEAKERI try to shut the PC down as early as I can

51:44SPEAKERand move to the laptop,

51:45SPEAKERwhich is much more power efficient.

51:47SPEAKERAnyway, go on.

51:49SPEAKERYes, that, that is a real bummer.

51:52SPEAKERI mean, I have found like,

51:55SPEAKERit seems like any kind of like video source,

51:57SPEAKERanything that it views as like VLC, for example,

51:59SPEAKERif I leave VLC open, even if it's minimized,

52:02SPEAKERthat'll keep the monitors from going to sleep.

52:04SPEAKER- Electron apps seem to do it.

52:06SPEAKER- Really?

52:07SPEAKER- Discord will keep it running forever.

52:09SPEAKER- Gross.

52:10SPEAKER- If I have a video open in a Firefox tab,

52:13SPEAKERany of them, even one not in the foreground,

52:15SPEAKERlike I have to close it.

52:16SPEAKERIf I turn off the browser, turn off Discord,

52:20SPEAKERturn off OBS,

52:24SPEAKERthat will maybe sometimes let it go to sleep.

52:28SPEAKER- What's your, what is your go to sleep timer?

52:30SPEAKERWhat's your, what's your time?

52:31SPEAKER- Like I'm, I'm aggressive.

52:32SPEAKERI set it to five minutes.

52:34SPEAKER- Oh, wow.

52:35SPEAKER- Because it comes back so fast, who cares?

52:36SPEAKER- Yeah, that's fair, that's fair.

52:38SPEAKER- But it also, it never goes to sleep.

52:40SPEAKERSo it's a, it's a moot point.

52:41SPEAKERLike it's a completely useless feature.

52:44SPEAKER- Hmm, I think we're in legitimate territory here.

52:50SPEAKERI think that, like.

52:52SPEAKER- Wait, where is it?

52:53SPEAKER- That one didn't play.

52:54SPEAKER- Oh no.

52:56SPEAKER- Oh crap.

52:57SPEAKER- Dealing with monitor sleep, power settings,

52:59SPEAKERlike power profiles, the whole thing in windows

53:01SPEAKERis really a pain in the rear.

53:03SPEAKER- Yeah, monitor sleep doesn't even work in this case.

53:05SPEAKERIt's maddening.

53:07SPEAKER- Yeah, okay, that's, that's pretty dumb.

53:10SPEAKER(bell dings)

53:11SPEAKER- All right, still doing a batting pretty good average here.

53:14SPEAKER- I mean, I feel like we're,

53:16SPEAKERI feel like these are entirely legitimate grievances

53:18SPEAKERfor the most part.

53:19SPEAKER- Expect us to inspire some discussion.

53:21SPEAKER- Yeah, this is going to be a really active conversation

53:23SPEAKERin this week's episode.

53:25SPEAKER- In the coming days, yes.

53:26SPEAKER- You got another one?

53:27SPEAKER- I have an RGB light strip

53:29SPEAKERthat I have mounted behind my desk.

53:30SPEAKER- Oh, I've heard about this one before.

53:31SPEAKER- It's home kit connected.

53:32SPEAKER- Okay.

53:33SPEAKER- I think, have I mentioned before

53:34SPEAKERthat it randomly keeps dropping off my network?

53:37SPEAKER- Oh yeah, it's part of the internet of shit.

53:39SPEAKER- I have the same, I have a similar problem.

53:42SPEAKER- Like it basically just keeps becoming inaccessible

53:45SPEAKERwhere I can't turn it on and off or do anything with it.

53:47SPEAKERIt just stays on constantly.

53:48SPEAKER- Yeah.

53:49SPEAKER- The way I have it, the way I have it,

53:50SPEAKERlike mounted to the back of the desk and routed,

53:51SPEAKERthat leads to me to power cycle it.

53:53SPEAKERI have to like climb down under the desk on my back

53:57SPEAKERand like kind of crawl up behind the desk

53:58SPEAKERand like to reach where it's plugged in

54:00SPEAKERand power cycle it so it reconnects.

54:02SPEAKERAnyway, I found that whenever it does that,

54:06SPEAKERthat it's dropping onto a different subnet.

54:09SPEAKERIt's dropping onto a 169.254 prefix subnet.

54:12SPEAKER- Oh, it's auto assigning an IP

54:14SPEAKERrather than getting one from DHCP.

54:16SPEAKER- Then I was introduced, hey, I told you I love acronyms.

54:20SPEAKERI was introduced to the term APIPA.

54:23SPEAKERIs that how people say APIPA?

54:25SPEAKER- I've never heard that one before.

54:27SPEAKERWhat's the acronym?

54:28SPEAKER- The Automatic Private IP Addressing Range.

54:30SPEAKER- Yeah.

54:31SPEAKER- Which apparently was debuted in Windows.

54:32SPEAKERI guess that's like a-

54:33SPEAKER- It's a Windows 98 thing or something, right?

54:35SPEAKER- I was gonna say it's like a turn of the century

54:36SPEAKERWindows development.

54:38SPEAKER- The, all I remember is that

54:41SPEAKERwhen you started getting 169 IP addresses,

54:43SPEAKERit meant something was really jacked on your network.

54:45SPEAKER- Right, so I talked to some people in the network channel

54:47SPEAKERon the Discord and yes, like that,

54:49SPEAKERthat essentially means that DHCP is failing, I think.

54:51SPEAKER- Yeah.

54:52SPEAKER- I'm guessing 'cause like I think my lease,

54:54SPEAKERmy lease timeout is set to 24 hours

54:56SPEAKERor whatever it defaults to on my router.

54:58SPEAKERSo I'm guessing at some point when it's,

55:00SPEAKERwhen the DHCP lease expires on that thing,

55:02SPEAKERit has a hard time redoing it for some reason

55:04SPEAKERand then it ends up on this other subnet

55:05SPEAKERand then I can't access it.

55:06SPEAKER- Or it could be that it's not able to connect to Wi-Fi

55:08SPEAKERin the time that it's like, it could be,

55:11SPEAKERsometimes that happens because like the computer boots

55:13SPEAKERand the network hasn't spun up before the computer's booted.

55:17SPEAKERSo it gives the automatic address

55:19SPEAKERand it just never refreshes.

55:20SPEAKER- It is a janky strip.

55:22SPEAKERIt is pretty no name.

55:23SPEAKERI had never heard of the manufacturer before.

55:25SPEAKERIt is no longer in production.

55:27SPEAKER- Yeah, I think this is a legitimate grievance.

55:29SPEAKERDo you know why I think that, Brad?

55:31SPEAKER- Why is that?

55:31SPEAKER- Well, I have a whole buttload of Cree connected

55:34SPEAKERZigbee bulbs in my house

55:36SPEAKERand they connect to the Home Assistant.

55:38SPEAKERNow, in the before times is when they were connecting

55:41SPEAKERto a Samsung SmartThings hub,

55:44SPEAKERflawless, worked for years, no problems.

55:46SPEAKERNow, about every third Home Assistant update,

55:49SPEAKERthey just disconnect

55:51SPEAKERand the solution to reconnect them,

55:54SPEAKERthey show up as orphaned objects in Home Assistant.

55:57SPEAKERLike no amount of reloading or refreshing or reconnecting

56:00SPEAKERrebuilds the Zigbee mesh network.

56:03SPEAKERSo the solution is start with the light bulb

56:05SPEAKERthat's closest to the Zigbee hub

56:07SPEAKERand then do the,

56:09SPEAKERdo you know how you factory reset a Zigbee bulb?

56:12SPEAKERWell, there's no buttons on them.

56:14SPEAKERSo there's this cadence you learn.

56:16SPEAKERI can do it in my sleep now.

56:18SPEAKERIt's one second on, two seconds off.

56:20SPEAKERSo it's one 1,000 on, one 1,002 off,

56:22SPEAKERone 1,003 off, one 1,004 on, one 1,005 off,

56:26SPEAKERone 1,006 on, one 1,000.

56:28SPEAKERAnd you do that seven times.

56:30SPEAKER- That's a lot.

56:31SPEAKER- And then the light blinks once

56:33SPEAKERand that means that it's factory reset.

56:34SPEAKERAnd that means, the moment before it blinks,

56:38SPEAKERyou hit the fine Zigbee devices on the Home Assistant thing.

56:42SPEAKERSo it's like, it's a two hand, it's like juggling, right?

56:47SPEAKER- This is like something out of national treasure

56:50SPEAKERor some kind of like ancient ruins heist movie,

56:53SPEAKERlike ancient bespoke machinery

56:55SPEAKERthat you have to like crack a safe.

56:58SPEAKER- Yeah, it's like some real, it's some Tom Cruise bullshit.

57:01SPEAKERAnd here's the best part.

57:03SPEAKERYou have to do it for every one of the bulbs.

57:05SPEAKER- Now, hang on, how are you inputting that sequence?

57:07SPEAKERI thought you said there were no buttons.

57:08SPEAKER- Well, there's a light switch on the wall.

57:10SPEAKEROr if you're on a fixture that doesn't have a light switch,

57:13SPEAKERyou screw and unscrew the light bulb.

57:15SPEAKER- That's really something.

57:18SPEAKER- So the solution is,

57:21SPEAKERit's 150 bucks worth of bulbs probably in the house.

57:26SPEAKERSo I could get other bulbs

57:28SPEAKERor I could just keep doing this every two months.

57:31SPEAKER- Could I offer a third alternative?

57:34SPEAKERWhat if you just stopped updating Home Assistant?

57:37SPEAKER- Well, but there's security stuff and things.

57:41SPEAKER- Is this just a number go up thing?

57:42SPEAKERLike, are you actually using any new features

57:44SPEAKERin Home Assistant?

57:46SPEAKER- Yeah, it's in enough, it's in active enough development

57:49SPEAKERthat I probably want to continue updating it.

57:51SPEAKER- Okay, that's fair. - 'Cause it gets better.

57:52SPEAKER- That's fair, that's fair, I think.

57:55SPEAKER- And I use it a lot.

57:56SPEAKER- Okay.

57:57SPEAKER- Like the Home Assistant, I'm gonna go and tell you,

57:59SPEAKERon the list of things that I find out about

58:01SPEAKERfrom my wife or daughter when they're not working,

58:03SPEAKERthe Home Assistant not working is like,

58:06SPEAKERlike probably before the TV,

58:08SPEAKERlike if the internet goes down,

58:10SPEAKERI know because they're like,

58:11SPEAKER"Hey, the Home Assistant isn't working

58:13SPEAKER"faster than anything else."

58:14SPEAKERThey don't know that it's Home Assistant.

58:15SPEAKERThey're just like, "Hey, the lights don't work."

58:17SPEAKER- Yeah, and not being able to control your lights,

58:18SPEAKERpretty fundamental problem.

58:19SPEAKER- Turns out maybe this whole thing was a mistake, but--

58:21SPEAKER- I think you might be right.

58:23SPEAKER- Yeah, so I think yours is a legitimate grievance.

58:27SPEAKER- Okay, I mean, I think if we're gonna sit here

58:29SPEAKERand say that internet of things thing's not working

58:32SPEAKERlike they're supposed to,

58:33SPEAKERif we deem that a legitimate grievance,

58:35SPEAKERI don't think anybody's gonna challenge us on that

58:37SPEAKERbecause who among us has not dealt with this nonsense?

58:42SPEAKER(beeping)

58:44SPEAKERGreat, good stuff, perfect.

58:46SPEAKERAPIPA.

58:47SPEAKER- APIPA.

58:48SPEAKER- Automatic Private IP Addressing Range.

58:51SPEAKER- Okay, I got one more.

58:52SPEAKER- All right.

58:53SPEAKER- Well, I got more than one more.

58:55SPEAKERLook, I could do three of these episodes a month, probably,

58:58SPEAKERor now that I'm into it.

58:59SPEAKER- You are tremendously aggrieved.

59:02SPEAKER- How about a computer that you use kind of frequently,

59:06SPEAKERbut not every day that is unreliable as a result

59:09SPEAKERfor completely indeterminate reasons?

59:12SPEAKER- Is this due to, well, you just said

59:14SPEAKERyou haven't determined the problem.

59:15SPEAKERI wonder if that's due to missing updates

59:17SPEAKERon a regular schedule, or?

59:19SPEAKER- My guess is it's just like the bits,

59:22SPEAKERthe electrons get slow inside the CPU

59:24SPEAKERand they have to spin up for a little bit.

59:26SPEAKER- Right, like it.

59:28SPEAKER- Well, like my stream PC.

59:29SPEAKERSo I have a two PC stream setup, which also, to be clear,

59:33SPEAKERprobably a mistake in the great scheme of things.

59:38SPEAKERThe second PC I use, you know, four times a week,

59:41SPEAKERfive times a week, maybe, the rest of the time it's off.

59:46SPEAKERLet's say one out of four times you boot it up,

59:48SPEAKERit just blue screens.

59:49SPEAKER- Wow, okay.

59:51SPEAKER- Then it's like, but I don't use it enough

59:54SPEAKERto actually go to the trouble and figure.

59:56SPEAKERI'm sure it's memory timings or something stupid

59:58SPEAKERin the BIOS that I just haven't taken the time.

1:00:01SPEAKEROkay, there's two problems here.

1:00:04SPEAKERThe real reason I haven't gone through and fixed this

1:00:05SPEAKERis it's the monitor that it's attached to this computer

1:00:08SPEAKERis oriented in a portrait fashion,

1:00:10SPEAKERbut the BIOS does not have any provision

1:00:12SPEAKERto rotate to a portrait fashion.

1:00:14SPEAKERSo if I want to troubleshoot it,

1:00:16SPEAKERI have to rotate my head 90 degrees to the right

1:00:18SPEAKERto read the monitor reliably.

1:00:20SPEAKER- I mean, you're doing it right now.

1:00:21SPEAKERThis seems imminently doable.

1:00:23SPEAKER- It's pretty uncomfortable and also it's way over,

1:00:24SPEAKERthe monitor's way over there.

1:00:26SPEAKERSo it's like way off to the right.

1:00:28SPEAKERSo I realized that part of this is a self-inflicted problem.

1:00:34SPEAKERI should have probably made sure the machine

1:00:35SPEAKERwas really stable before I hooked it up

1:00:37SPEAKERto the portrait monitor.

1:00:39SPEAKERHowever, we live where we are now.

1:00:42SPEAKERAnd once it boots up and it gets past the part

1:00:44SPEAKERwhere the driver that it doesn't like makes it blue screen,

1:00:47SPEAKER'cause it's a driver, it's not a memory timing.

1:00:49SPEAKERIt's not like a bad memory.

1:00:52SPEAKERThe blue screen error is the one that indicates

1:00:54SPEAKERthere is a janky driver somewhere on the machine,

1:00:56SPEAKERwhich also is possible 'cause it's like,

1:00:59SPEAKERyou know, this is a Windows install from a while ago

1:01:01SPEAKERand maybe it's been moved between a couple

1:01:02SPEAKERof different architectures over the years.

1:01:04SPEAKER- Oh, I see, I see.

1:01:06SPEAKER- You know, could be my fault.

1:01:10SPEAKER- Dude, okay, my opinion may be turning on this one.

1:01:14SPEAKERI might suggest that stability could be

1:01:17SPEAKERa Windows install away on this one.

1:01:21SPEAKER- Okay, so the problem with that is the amount of tech debt

1:01:25SPEAKERon recreating the stream set up

1:01:28SPEAKERand the price of failing the recreation

1:01:32SPEAKERof the stream set up properly

1:01:33SPEAKERis an unbelievable amount of work.

1:01:37SPEAKER- You can't just export like OBS scenes

1:01:38SPEAKERand Python scripts and whatever.

1:01:40SPEAKER- Theoretically, yes.

1:01:42SPEAKER- You just back up that whole-

1:01:43SPEAKER- It also has like a bot and the bot has a bunch

1:01:45SPEAKERof custom commands and shit in there.

1:01:46SPEAKERAnd I'm pretty sure I have that backed up well,

1:01:48SPEAKERbut I'm not so sure that I would wipe the machine.

1:01:52SPEAKERI'd have to buy a new drive and then reinstall

1:01:55SPEAKERand then have to keep the old drives around just in case.

1:01:57SPEAKERYou know, it's a little fraught is what I'm saying.

1:02:01SPEAKER- Yes, I understand the power of inertia here.

1:02:03SPEAKER- Yeah.

1:02:04SPEAKER- This is, yeah, okay, I think I'll give you this one.

1:02:08SPEAKERWhat does a portrait mode blue screen look like?

1:02:11SPEAKERDoes it even know how to like format the text

1:02:13SPEAKERfor that aspect ratio?

1:02:14SPEAKER- 90 degrees to the right, Brad.

1:02:15SPEAKER- Okay, oh, right, right.

1:02:18SPEAKERWait, wait, hang on.

1:02:19SPEAKERYou mean even when Windows is displaying in portrait mode,

1:02:22SPEAKERlike the blue screen still comes out in landscape?

1:02:23SPEAKER- The blue screen is in landscape, I believe.

1:02:25SPEAKER- Oh, wow, that's intra, okay, huh?

1:02:28SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, it makes sense 'cause it's double the space

1:02:31SPEAKERif they have to do portrait and landscape.

1:02:33SPEAKER- Yes, that does make sense.

1:02:34SPEAKER- Okay, I'm gonna play the sound.

1:02:36SPEAKER- Okay, I'm not 1,000% convinced on that one,

1:02:41SPEAKERbut I'll give it to you.

1:02:43SPEAKER- Should I, I can do a, oh, here.

1:02:48SPEAKER- Huh, what's that? - There you go.

1:02:50SPEAKERYou don't know that one?

1:02:51SPEAKER- No, I gotta find the soundboard you're using.

1:02:53SPEAKER- These are just my,

1:02:54SPEAKERI'm literally going down my ringtones on the phone.

1:02:56SPEAKER- Oh, oh, wow, you, huh.

1:02:58SPEAKER- I do, but Fez, the Fez opening chime was my ringtone

1:03:01SPEAKERfor years and years

1:03:02SPEAKER'cause it just makes me happy every time I hear it.

1:03:04SPEAKER- It's a pretty good one.

1:03:05SPEAKER- That last one is the Mark of the Ninja notification sound.

1:03:08SPEAKER- Oh, wow, okay, I haven't played that one in a long time.

1:03:10SPEAKERThere's something, I stopped using novelty ringtones

1:03:13SPEAKERbecause I realized at a certain point

1:03:15SPEAKERthat hearing it that often,

1:03:17SPEAKERand also sometimes associating it

1:03:19SPEAKERwith having to pick up the phone

1:03:21SPEAKERhad a kind of deadening effect on my affection

1:03:24SPEAKERfor those sounds.

1:03:25SPEAKERIt's like the more I heard something, the less I liked it,

1:03:27SPEAKEReven if it was something I really liked in the first place.

1:03:28SPEAKER- These are still on my phone

1:03:30SPEAKERbecause they just come over with each new phone install

1:03:33SPEAKERthanks to the, like I probably did these on the iPhone 4.

1:03:36SPEAKER- Like wow, wow.

1:03:37SPEAKER- Somewhere in here, there's the Saints Row song.

1:03:43SPEAKER- You just can't be bothered, huh?

1:03:45SPEAKERAnd there's that inertia again.

1:03:46SPEAKER- Well, it's not that, it just happens.

1:03:48SPEAKERAnd so the phone's been in silent for 10 years,

1:03:50SPEAKERbut they're still here.

1:03:51SPEAKER- Fair, fair.

1:03:52SPEAKER- That's like I have R2-D2 beeps.

1:03:54SPEAKER- My one experience with a novelty ringtone was, gosh,

1:03:59SPEAKERthis probably was on the iPhone 3G.

1:04:01SPEAKER- Yeah.

1:04:02SPEAKER- Yanked the, you know, right at the beginning of Portal

1:04:04SPEAKERwhen you wake up in that little cell

1:04:05SPEAKERand there's a radio there playing the theme song

1:04:08SPEAKERin that real tinny.

1:04:09SPEAKER- Yeah.

1:04:10SPEAKER- I went in the game install

1:04:11SPEAKERand just yanked that audio file of that little song,

1:04:13SPEAKERradio song out and slapped it on as a ringtone

1:04:15SPEAKERand then came to hate that sound over the years.

1:04:18SPEAKER- I remember I had the Saints Row,

1:04:20SPEAKERthe opening like five bars of the Saints Row 3 song.

1:04:25SPEAKER- Oh, is it the garage song?

1:04:27SPEAKER- It's the one that plays on the main menu, I think.

1:04:29SPEAKER- Oh, okay, that's a different one.

1:04:31SPEAKER- But Ryan and Jeff and Patrick

1:04:34SPEAKERand like six of us had it in the basement

1:04:36SPEAKERand it became a problem

1:04:38SPEAKER'cause every time somebody's phone would ring,

1:04:40SPEAKEReverybody would reach for their phones.

1:04:43SPEAKERThat was the last time I had my phone on,

1:04:44SPEAKERnot silent, probably on the reg.

1:04:46SPEAKER- That makes sense, okay, my last one.

1:04:49SPEAKER- Okay.

1:04:51SPEAKER- I think I am just prepared

1:04:52SPEAKERto preemptively self-declare dipshittery on this one.

1:04:56SPEAKER- Okay, I like it.

1:04:57SPEAKER- In fact, I'm not a thousand percent serious,

1:04:59SPEAKERalthough I kind of am.

1:05:01SPEAKER- I know you're serious.

1:05:02SPEAKER- I want faster internet.

1:05:06SPEAKER- Hey Brad, how fast is your internet now for the record?

1:05:08SPEAKER- I'm not gonna say.

1:05:10SPEAKER- How fast is it?

1:05:11SPEAKER- I have got extremely reliable symmetric gigabit

1:05:14SPEAKERup and down for a very fair monthly price.

1:05:17SPEAKER- And how fast is your connection

1:05:18SPEAKERbetween your computer and the router?

1:05:22SPEAKER- Gigabit also, yeah.

1:05:24SPEAKER- So where is the bottleneck in a system

1:05:27SPEAKERwith faster internet between your house

1:05:29SPEAKERand the outside world?

1:05:31SPEAKER- Okay, let me just expand on this.

1:05:33SPEAKER- Okay.

1:05:34SPEAKER- This is not about practical application

1:05:36SPEAKERof faster download speeds.

1:05:38SPEAKER- Is this about compensating for other inadequacies?

1:05:41SPEAKER- No, I have literally written this in the show notes doc.

1:05:45SPEAKEROne gigabit is not exciting anymore.

1:05:48SPEAKER- This is a purely hypothetical need.

1:05:51SPEAKER- So I'll go even further here.

1:05:53SPEAKER- Okay.

1:05:54SPEAKER- We've talked about Chattanooga, Tennessee's

1:05:56SPEAKERmunicipal 10 gigabit internet service.

1:05:58SPEAKER- Yes.

1:05:59SPEAKER- And how exciting that is.

1:06:00SPEAKER- Yes.

1:06:01SPEAKER- Although I look at their plans, it's 300 bucks a month.

1:06:03SPEAKEREven if I lived there, I could not justify that cost

1:06:06SPEAKER'cause come on, I don't need 10 gigabit.

1:06:07SPEAKER- What if we hosted the podcast there?

1:06:10SPEAKER- Ooh, there you go. - Maybe on to something.

1:06:12SPEAKERSo this one was really occasioned by a blog post

1:06:16SPEAKERthat was going around in the discord a couple of weeks ago.

1:06:18SPEAKER- Okay.

1:06:20SPEAKER- From a guy named Michael Stoppelberg in Switzerland

1:06:24SPEAKERwho just upgraded to 25 gigabit internet service.

1:06:27SPEAKER- What the hell do you do with 25 gigabit internet service?

1:06:30SPEAKER- He addresses that among other things in this blog.

1:06:32SPEAKERAlso, apparently he is the author of the i3 Window Manager,

1:06:36SPEAKERthe Tiling Window Manager for Unix likes.

1:06:40SPEAKERHe says in his blog post that when the ISP tech showed up

1:06:44SPEAKERto install his 25 gigabit internet, the tech recognized him.

1:06:47SPEAKERHe was like, "Oh wow, you wrote my window manager."

1:06:49SPEAKER- Wow.

1:06:50SPEAKER- Anyway, I don't want it for the download.

1:06:54SPEAKERHere's why I want it.

1:06:56SPEAKERI just want a reason to have to build a router

1:06:58SPEAKERthat can handle 25 gigabits.

1:07:00SPEAKERThat's the actual reason. - Okay, okay.

1:07:02SPEAKER- That's the actual reason I want faster internet

1:07:04SPEAKERis I just want an excuse to build a router

1:07:06SPEAKERthat can handle it.

1:07:07SPEAKERBut I mean, in order to do anything functional with that,

1:07:10SPEAKERyou'd have to put four different servers inside the house.

1:07:13SPEAKER- Totally, the only way you're gonna get any use

1:07:15SPEAKERout of something like that that you couldn't also do

1:07:18SPEAKERwith one gigabit is to run a bunch of symmetric stuff.

1:07:20SPEAKERYou're not gonna get a gigabyte a second

1:07:23SPEAKERfrom a single download source, right?

1:07:25SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm prepared to render a judgment on this one.

1:07:28SPEAKER- But if you're serving a bunch of stuff

1:07:29SPEAKERor say you're downloading games

1:07:31SPEAKERfrom both Xbox and PlayStation at the same time,

1:07:33SPEAKERthen neither one of them would be bottlenecked.

1:07:35SPEAKER- Assuming your switch between the router and the,

1:07:38SPEAKERthe problem is getting the network infrastructure

1:07:41SPEAKERto not bottleneck between the switch

1:07:43SPEAKERand the router is the problem.

1:07:45SPEAKER- Now you're getting it.

1:07:46SPEAKERSee, I just want a problem to solve.

1:07:48SPEAKERI just want to architect a new network

1:07:51SPEAKERthat can handle all of this stuff,

1:07:52SPEAKERand I have absolutely no need for it

1:07:53SPEAKERand also no space for it.

1:07:55SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, at that point,

1:07:57SPEAKERyou're looking at a 1U switch.

1:08:01SPEAKERYou're looking at business switches

1:08:04SPEAKERthat can either channel bond multiple ethernet channels or...

1:08:10SPEAKER- These Mellanox cards will do it.

1:08:11SPEAKERLike the one I've got has two 40 gigabit ports

1:08:14SPEAKERon the same card.

1:08:15SPEAKERLike that's all you need, but like in his blog,

1:08:17SPEAKERif you look, like he built a router that is a full-size PC.

1:08:20SPEAKER- Well, yeah, I was gonna say.

1:08:21SPEAKER- To handle the speed, which is a little excessive.

1:08:23SPEAKERI mean, not that it's not appropriate for the use case.

1:08:25SPEAKERIt's just like, I don't want to run a full-size PC

1:08:27SPEAKERfor a router.

1:08:28SPEAKER- Well, what you need is to put a Billy,

1:08:30SPEAKERbut no, see, you just run the router

1:08:32SPEAKERand a hypervisor on your NAS.

1:08:35SPEAKERSo the NAS is one VM, the router's another VM.

1:08:39SPEAKERYou need like a Threadripper in there

1:08:41SPEAKERand you need a board with like 16 ethernet ports.

1:08:44SPEAKER- Now you're talking and all of this could go in a rack and...

1:08:49SPEAKER- I don't know why you would send it to a rack.

1:08:51SPEAKER- Okay, look, this is, okay,

1:08:54SPEAKERI'm just gonna let that one go.

1:08:56SPEAKERThis one, okay, this one was intentionally

1:08:58SPEAKERa little flippant, okay?

1:09:00SPEAKERI'm fully accepted or I'm fully prepared

1:09:02SPEAKERto take the hit on this one.

1:09:03SPEAKERI know it's ridiculous.

1:09:05SPEAKERI don't even need the faster internet.

1:09:07SPEAKERI just look at people building cool routers

1:09:09SPEAKERand I'm like, man, I wish I had a reason to do that.

1:09:11SPEAKERBut my current router is totally fine, so I don't.

1:09:14SPEAKER- I think I'm gonna give you a dipshit here,

1:09:16SPEAKERbut with an asterisk, which is,

1:09:17SPEAKERI do appreciate the attempt at problem solving.

1:09:19SPEAKERAnd I think you should build a PFS router

1:09:21SPEAKER'cause you need more things to manage in your life.

1:09:24SPEAKER- I need something to tinker with.

1:09:25SPEAKERI need more things to tinker with.

1:09:28SPEAKERUh-oh, here it comes.

1:09:30SPEAKER(squeaking)

1:09:31SPEAKERAw.

1:09:32SPEAKER- I wish I didn't have the Pac-Man one here.

1:09:33SPEAKERThe Pac-Man didn't work apparently, so.

1:09:36SPEAKER- Do you think we will see more widespread

1:09:38SPEAKERfaster than Gigabit?

1:09:40SPEAKERI started to say in our lifetimes,

1:09:42SPEAKERbut that sounds silly because that's hopefully decades.

1:09:44SPEAKERAnd like, almost assuredly in decades we will,

1:09:48SPEAKERbut like, do you see, 'cause you know,

1:09:50SPEAKERlike now that they've dragged fiber all over the place,

1:09:52SPEAKERlike fiber is just a matter of like putting in a new ONT

1:09:56SPEAKERand provisioning for faster speed, right?

1:09:58SPEAKERLike the actual fiber cables can handle way faster

1:10:00SPEAKERthan Gigabit, so like it could see faster service

1:10:03SPEAKERstarting to proliferate.

1:10:04SPEAKER- Well, I mean the bigger problem is that the infrastructure

1:10:07SPEAKERinside the house isn't gonna support it.

1:10:09SPEAKER- Right, yes.

1:10:11SPEAKERThat is where the problem solving on the user end

1:10:13SPEAKERhas to come in, and obviously a lot of people

1:10:14SPEAKERprobably don't care enough to deal with that.

1:10:16SPEAKER- Well, and also, I mean it's hard to argue with Gigabit

1:10:20SPEAKERwhen you can buy a $40 unmanaged switch

1:10:22SPEAKERthat will do what you need inside the house

1:10:25SPEAKERversus, you know, a $500 managed switch

1:10:29SPEAKERthat has fiber ports and a bunch of overhead and nonsense.

1:10:32SPEAKER- I have to be clear, in my case at least,

1:10:34SPEAKERI probably would only hook up the NASA

1:10:36SPEAKERand my Windows PC directly to the super fast.

1:10:40SPEAKER- Yeah, that makes sense.

1:10:41SPEAKER- Everything else in the house would probably stay

1:10:42SPEAKERon Gigabit, to be perfectly honest.

1:10:44SPEAKER- I mean, I would be really curious to see

1:10:46SPEAKERwhat actually you get.

1:10:48SPEAKERLike, I can't, Steam won't max out my connection anymore.

1:10:52SPEAKER- Really?

1:10:52SPEAKER- No, I guess--

1:10:53SPEAKER- It's very, it's variable.

1:10:54SPEAKERI have to start to say, very variable, that's--

1:10:56SPEAKER- Yeah.

1:10:57SPEAKER- Like, it is quite variable for me as well.

1:10:59SPEAKERLike, sometimes it will.

1:11:01SPEAKERI've had--

1:11:01SPEAKER- Epic will hit it.

1:11:03SPEAKER- Really, I don't have the best Epic.

1:11:04SPEAKERI found Origin and Battle.net to be very fast.

1:11:09SPEAKER- Origin, Origin can make the video playback

1:11:11SPEAKERin the living room stop.

1:11:12SPEAKERIt will use so much of my bandwidth.

1:11:14SPEAKER- Yes.

1:11:15SPEAKER- I haven't played anything on Battle.net in ages,

1:11:17SPEAKERso I don't know.

1:11:18SPEAKER- He, I'll put this blog note, or I will put this blog link

1:11:22SPEAKERin the show notes so you can look at it,

1:11:24SPEAKERbut he's got speed tests in here.

1:11:25SPEAKERHe tested, like, he downloaded a bunch of Linux ISOs,

1:11:31SPEAKERwhich everyone knows is the classic

1:11:34SPEAKERonly use for fast internet.

1:11:36SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, look--

1:11:36SPEAKER- Yeah, he's got a bunch of benchmarks in here.

1:11:38SPEAKERLike, he legitimately was able to hit about,

1:11:41SPEAKERhe did the classic Ookla speed test on net tests

1:11:44SPEAKERand legitimately got about 23 gigabit up and down.

1:11:48SPEAKER- That's bonkers.

1:11:49SPEAKER- It is bonkers, right?

1:11:50SPEAKERI'm trying to look at, let's see, download.

1:11:53SPEAKER- I don't know that I've ever been someplace

1:11:54SPEAKERthat has that kind of connection.

1:11:56SPEAKER- I'm looking at his actual numbers here.

1:11:58SPEAKERLike he, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo.

1:12:02SPEAKERLet's see, he was able to iperf at 23 gigabits.

1:12:05SPEAKER- Wow.

1:12:06SPEAKER- I'm trying to see.

1:12:06SPEAKERHe doesn't have a lot of, like, actual download benchmark.

1:12:09SPEAKERAnyway, I'll put that in there.

1:12:10SPEAKERIt's fun to think about.

1:12:11SPEAKERI don't actually need it.

1:12:12SPEAKERIt's just fun to think about.

1:12:14SPEAKER- I've got, I've got one more.

1:12:15SPEAKER- Okay, all right, let's wrap it up here.

1:12:17SPEAKER- People are mowing outside, I've got to wrap it up.

1:12:19SPEAKER- Oh.

1:12:20SPEAKER- You know when you're on a website and you're looking

1:12:22SPEAKERand you're like, oh, hey, if you like this art,

1:12:24SPEAKERyou get to the end of the article and it's like,

1:12:25SPEAKERhey, you might like this article.

1:12:26SPEAKERHere's some other good articles on our site.

1:12:28SPEAKERAnd then you click it and it's not actually

1:12:29SPEAKERan article on that site.

1:12:30SPEAKERIt's just some garbage article that takes you

1:12:32SPEAKERto some clickbait site where it's just like,

1:12:34SPEAKERhey, we got to get 50 clicks out of this person

1:12:36SPEAKERto pay for the traffic that we just bought.

1:12:38SPEAKER- I am familiar with this phenomenon.

1:12:39SPEAKER- I hate those.

1:12:41SPEAKER- Like, but I mean, isn't it,

1:12:42SPEAKERaren't they usually easily identifiable

1:12:44SPEAKERas not content on the same site?

1:12:46SPEAKER- I'm going to suggest that the technology improved

1:12:49SPEAKERwith merging them into the content is getting better.

1:12:52SPEAKERAnd also the ability for my pie hole to detect them

1:12:55SPEAKERand block them has not kept up with the times,

1:12:58SPEAKERpossibly because I haven't paid that much attention to it.

1:13:00SPEAKERBut like going through and blocking outbrain,

1:13:03SPEAKERevery outbrain domain ever helped a ton.

1:13:06SPEAKERLike I just don't see them on a lot of sites anymore.

1:13:08SPEAKER- I'm sorry, what domain?

1:13:09SPEAKER- Outbrain.

1:13:10SPEAKER- Outbrain?

1:13:11SPEAKER- Outbrain is one of the companies that is famous

1:13:13SPEAKERfor doing this.

1:13:13SPEAKER- One of the leading purveyors of clickbait.

1:13:15SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, look, so the business model on those

1:13:18SPEAKERas somebody who had to deal with this in past lives

1:13:20SPEAKERis we will pay a good site X number of dollars for,

1:13:27SPEAKERor cents for each click of these, right?

1:13:29SPEAKERAnd then their goal is to get enough page views

1:13:33SPEAKERand ad impressions off of those clicks

1:13:35SPEAKERto make more money than they paid getting that click.

1:13:38SPEAKER- Yeah.

1:13:39SPEAKER- And so usually that takes the form of like,

1:13:40SPEAKERhere's an article that looks like it might be interesting,

1:13:43SPEAKERbut then it turns out to be a slideshow

1:13:44SPEAKERthat's like 60 slides deep before you get to the thing

1:13:46SPEAKERthat you were looking for.

1:13:49SPEAKERThe other variant of this is the other side

1:13:52SPEAKERof this business that's also equally shitty

1:13:55SPEAKERand is serving to make Google results

1:13:57SPEAKERor search engine results basically useless,

1:14:00SPEAKER'cause search engines tend to prefer things that are newer.

1:14:03SPEAKERSo like if you search for, for example,

1:14:07SPEAKERhey, I wanna know where to find all of the legendary spells

1:14:11SPEAKERin Elden Ring 'cause I'm trying to get an achievement.

1:14:13SPEAKERWell, there's probably a pretty good guide on GameSpot

1:14:16SPEAKERand there's probably a pretty good guide on IGN

1:14:18SPEAKERand like video games 24/7

1:14:20SPEAKERand Eurogamer and GamesRadar, right?

1:14:24SPEAKERThere's also a bazillion shit sites

1:14:27SPEAKERthat scrape one of those sites

1:14:29SPEAKERand they just update the page every day.

1:14:30SPEAKERSo there's, it looks like they're constantly updating it,

1:14:32SPEAKERbut it's the same thing every day

1:14:33SPEAKERand it's a horrible pastiche of like stuff

1:14:37SPEAKERthat was scraped off of other sites

1:14:38SPEAKERand maybe jammed together by a person or some bot.

1:14:43SPEAKER- Dude, that problem is widespread

1:14:45SPEAKERacross numerous categories. - Everything, yeah.

1:14:47SPEAKER- Like looking for PC hardware news,

1:14:50SPEAKERlooking for like solutions to windows problems,

1:14:52SPEAKERlike all that stuff.

1:14:53SPEAKERLike I know exactly what you're talking about.

1:14:55SPEAKERDoes this, does all of this could qualify as,

1:14:58SPEAKERdoes this fall under the dark pattern umbrella?

1:15:00SPEAKER- It's kind of dark patterns

1:15:02SPEAKERand also like gaming the ad networks.

1:15:06SPEAKER- Yes, yes, like the algorithmic gaming

1:15:08SPEAKERor the gaming of search results

1:15:10SPEAKERwith shitty algorithmic content is a huge problem

1:15:13SPEAKERin search results at this point.

1:15:14SPEAKERLike the first like two pages of stuff

1:15:16SPEAKERis just functionally useless in a lot of cases.

1:15:18SPEAKER- So yeah, like if I searched, I searched on DuckDuckGo,

1:15:21SPEAKERwhich mostly uses Bing results, I think,

1:15:23SPEAKERfor the blue screen that I get on the stream PC.

1:15:29SPEAKERAnd the first seven results are how,

1:15:33SPEAKERlike they're the same headline,

1:15:35SPEAKERhow to fix blah, blah, blah BSOD in windows.

1:15:39SPEAKEROne of them is a Microsoft thread,

1:15:41SPEAKERwhich kind of is the thing you want,

1:15:43SPEAKERbut it's in the community site.

1:15:44SPEAKERIt doesn't actually have a solution.

1:15:46SPEAKERThe rest of them are these things that are like,

1:15:49SPEAKERhey, go get driver easy and search for driver,

1:15:51SPEAKERuse driver easy on your computer.

1:15:53SPEAKERI don't know what fucking driver easy is.

1:15:54SPEAKERDriver easy is probably a disaster

1:15:56SPEAKERand I'm not gonna do it.

1:15:58SPEAKER- The ones that are trying to sell

1:15:59SPEAKERclosed proprietary software to fix your problems

1:16:01SPEAKERare like, ugh, I just feel slimy coming out of those.

1:16:05SPEAKER- Well, and then the rest of them are this.

1:16:08SPEAKERThe system service exception in windows 10

1:16:10SPEAKERis a blue screen of death parentheses BSOD error.

1:16:13SPEAKERIn this article, we'll examine

1:16:15SPEAKERthe system service exception error,

1:16:16SPEAKERwhy it happens, what you can do to fix it

1:16:18SPEAKERand how to stop it from happening again.

1:16:20SPEAKERAnd then you get a whole bunch of bullshit

1:16:23SPEAKERthat doesn't actually tell you how to do it

1:16:25SPEAKERand probably is linking out to some bad software

1:16:28SPEAKERthat's going to cause you problems

1:16:30SPEAKERand like absolute Garbo sites all the way down.

1:16:34SPEAKERAnyway.

1:16:35SPEAKER- Nobody is going to argue,

1:16:37SPEAKERif we call this a legitimate grievance,

1:16:40SPEAKERit's one of the worst things on the web.

1:16:42SPEAKERThe general devaluation of search over the last few years,

1:16:46SPEAKERit's gotten to the point that I just searched Reddit

1:16:48SPEAKERfor stuff like this.

1:16:49SPEAKERIf I want a PC problem fix or a game hack or game guide,

1:16:54SPEAKERI either go to IGN or GameSpot or something,

1:16:56SPEAKERor I just search the subreddit.

1:16:59SPEAKER- Yes, I am fully with you on this.

1:17:01SPEAKERAlso, I'm just gonna throw in as an addendum,

1:17:03SPEAKERspeaking of scrolling to the bottom of articles,

1:17:06SPEAKERthe endless scroll.

1:17:08SPEAKER- Oh yeah, fuck that.

1:17:09SPEAKER- Where there is no bottom of an article,

1:17:10SPEAKERyou just scroll straight into another article

1:17:12SPEAKERand then another article, like I also, also a pet peeve.

1:17:19SPEAKER- I also disagree.

1:17:21SPEAKER- Look, Roadrunner is a guy

1:17:22SPEAKERwho wants to get problems solved quickly

1:17:24SPEAKERand you can't do that with a bunch of garbage

1:17:26SPEAKERsearch results floating to the top.

1:17:27SPEAKER- Roadrunner has got to go fast.

1:17:29SPEAKER- That's right, he's not the only one.

1:17:31SPEAKER- Do you know what else goes fast?

1:17:32SPEAKER- What's that?

1:17:33SPEAKER- Our wonderful patrons.

1:17:34SPEAKER- Yeah, wait, do they?

1:17:35SPEAKERThat's, I'm not going to disagree necessarily.

1:17:38SPEAKERI could use some justification for that statement.

1:17:41SPEAKER- I was up last night playing Elden Ring,

1:17:43SPEAKERbeating Elden Ring and I'm a little sleepy

1:17:47SPEAKERfor a good segue, so you get the segue you get today.

1:17:49SPEAKER- Sometimes the words just come out.

1:17:52SPEAKER- Yeah, it made sense before I was saying it

1:17:55SPEAKERand during the time I was saying it

1:17:57SPEAKERand then immediately after I was like,

1:17:58SPEAKERoh, this is a bad segue.

1:18:37SPEAKERWedge salad with tech sauce on the side.

1:18:39SPEAKER- Ooh.

1:18:40SPEAKER- I like a wedge salad, a little bacon,

1:18:42SPEAKERsome blue cheese on there.

1:18:43SPEAKER- Yeah, yes.

1:18:44SPEAKER- It's like, is a wedge salad or a taco salad

1:18:48SPEAKERthe least salad-y salad?

1:18:49SPEAKERI don't know.

1:18:51SPEAKER- Trying to think, maybe like a Waldorf salad.

1:18:56SPEAKER- Waldorf has nuts, they're good.

1:18:58SPEAKERNuts are good for you, right?

1:19:53SPEAKERyou don't have to pay for anymore.

1:19:54SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, going over a lot of kind of prominent

1:19:57SPEAKERopen-source creative software like Audacity and Blender
