00:00SPEAKERWhat do you know?

00:02SPEAKERAbout joy con drift joy con drift. Oh, man. I've well I've I have taken a joy con apart in my day

00:07SPEAKERSo let's say me too. Yeah. Oh, yeah, you also did that. So is this the intro or we just said?

00:14SPEAKERI mean, I think so. Okay, well now we can start over means we're gonna try it. I just fucked it up

00:18SPEAKERI can I definitely can talk about joy con. So we can just do an intro. That's just the intro

00:22SPEAKERWe just talking about the intro. Maybe it is. I don't know if this should be the internet

00:25SPEAKERThis is the entrapped back around to being the intro again. So here we are

00:29SPEAKERI mean I was gonna talk about how animal crossing has completely exposed all that every joy con in my house as dress that sucks

00:36SPEAKERI feel so lucky. I haven't had that yet. Is it just is it really noticeable? I mean, I guess it has to be noticeable

00:43SPEAKERso

00:44SPEAKERThere's a combination with animal crossing of no aim targets plus the fact that the stick moves on its own

00:48SPEAKEROh god aiming it makes it in that game to begin with. Oh my god

00:52SPEAKERIt's the fishing is so front that and the fact that I'm pretty sure they've written the fish in that game - the moment you cast

00:58SPEAKERAim the other direction I would believe it's just just it's supposed to be a chill fun game and I'm just

01:05SPEAKERFucking angry at those fish animal crossing is a harsh master

01:08SPEAKERSo I'm not clear if joy con drift is a hundred percent guaranteed to happen to all joy cons eventually or if it's a sporadic thing

01:15SPEAKERmy understanding is it's when dust gets between the the sensor and the

01:20SPEAKERLike into the sense of it. So it's registering false positive contact

01:24SPEAKERyeah, pretty much and and the way it works is usually like on mine at least the sticks move, okay, and

01:33SPEAKERbut then sometimes when you release the stick to stop it doesn't stop or

01:37SPEAKERSometimes if you like bump at the tiniest bit it'll register a big move and it'll just go

01:41SPEAKERCan you it is I'm sure that isn't so frustrating

01:44SPEAKERCan you kind of like feather it with your thumb to correct it back to neutral or is that not kind of great?

01:49SPEAKERThat's not great

01:50SPEAKERI'd been playing a lot of Animal Crossing picked up an Xbox 360 controller the other day

01:54SPEAKERAnd I was like, oh man, this is so nice. Yeah, just does exactly what I wanted to do. Yeah, it's a their fixes

02:00SPEAKERYes, you can wipe off home fixes. Yeah, you can replace the sticks. You can get aftermarket sticks and replace them

02:07SPEAKERIt's just a couple screws in a ribbon cable

02:08SPEAKERI think I saw that on I fix it there like what 15 bucks a stick or something like that

02:12SPEAKEROr is it 15 bucks for two maybe on Amazon is what I saw. Okay, or you can also

02:18SPEAKERJust open it up and blast it out with air and hope that hope for the best

02:23SPEAKEROh, I mean they will fix it but we're both in the situation where we've made some modifications

02:29SPEAKERThey're not gonna fix my yeah, you could if you still have the original housing you could put it back together and maybe they'll

02:35SPEAKERMaybe they'll never know

02:37SPEAKERThey'll know. Yeah, they always know they can always tell

02:53SPEAKER(Music)

03:18SPEAKERWelcome to Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod. I'm Will. Hey, thanks for having me. I'm Brad

03:21SPEAKERWell, yeah, we're when when we're doing the show together, you don't have to say

03:26SPEAKERThanks for having me. We're doing that again. This is what it's come to. I'm already going back to the well on old materials

03:30SPEAKERGod, these materials are killing me. I've used that one at least three times now

03:34SPEAKERHow you doing man? I'm fine, you know, maybe going a little stir-crazy in here, but it's cool

03:39SPEAKERIt's sweaty over here. Oh, really? It's sweaty. It's real humid today. It's clammy up here and foggy and gross

03:47SPEAKERIt's yeah, both on different ends of the gross spectrum exactly. I still wear my jammy pants. Oh, yes. I got that going

03:53SPEAKERHappy Sunday. I haven't put on long pants since the 10th of March probably

04:00SPEAKERMy beard is my beard is ridiculous at this point

04:03SPEAKERI'm gonna have to trim the mustache or else I'm gonna start eating hair all the time

04:06SPEAKERYou're getting gross in a good like Unix kind of sysadmin territory there

04:11SPEAKERI think if you just want to keep I'm gonna have to decide between shaving my head and getting a ponytail before too long

04:17SPEAKERThere's a dark time. We had a serious discussion this morning about my girlfriend cutting my hair

04:23SPEAKERYeah, I where we're at

04:25SPEAKERso the woman who cut my hair for the last most of the last 20 years is doing

04:30SPEAKERLike video consults where she tells one partner what to do when the other person is cutting their hair. It's enterprising

04:36SPEAKERThat's like that is fucking genius is entrepreneurial

04:39SPEAKERShe's very good. That's good

04:41SPEAKERHey, we we have business. We made a mistake last. Yes. We were very sorry

04:46SPEAKERWe forgot to thank our executive producers did which is uncool. We're new at this is all I can say

04:52SPEAKERI've never this is my first podcast. So

04:54SPEAKERsame a

04:56SPEAKERBelated last week and I guess also this week. Thank you to David Allen and Andrew cotton, dude

05:01SPEAKERWe support the tech pod patreon at the executive producer level kind of guys so much

05:06SPEAKERWe got to stay on the boss man's good side. You know how he gets I know they're they're the man

05:09SPEAKERYeah, and of course, thanks to all the patreon sponsors. Yes. Thank you show. Thank you everybody for so much

05:15SPEAKERThis this week though. Yeah, which we talk you want to talk about some we've got a grab projects. Yeah

05:21SPEAKERYeah, somehow it turns out that being stuck in the house

05:24SPEAKERIt leads to us tinkering with a bunch of stuff all day long or whatever. It's it's what we do

05:30SPEAKERWe've been talking about the mister a lot lately and you and I both made some purchases

05:35SPEAKERYou're further along than I am. Yes, although still in some various state of completion

05:40SPEAKERWhat do you what do you want to start? Do you want to start with the foreign RAM?

05:43SPEAKERI don't I shouldn't lead with that, but I just did well

05:48SPEAKERLike you sent me a link to this guy in Portugal. I don't want to put him on blast. No, no

05:54SPEAKERI'm not upset just no clear

05:55SPEAKERI'm not I'm not worried over any I'm not even concerned at this point cuz PayPal if you're a buyer

05:59SPEAKERPayPal would give you money back for any reason whatsoever including you shipped it and it arrived

06:05SPEAKERI'm not worried about him getting scammed. He came recommended by some of the like most trusted figures in the mister community

06:11SPEAKERSo I'm not worried about that at all. It's more just idea. It's all good

06:13SPEAKERIt's been it's been a few weeks much for where what the state of the shipping is

06:16SPEAKERBut I'm not about to hassle somebody in the middle of a pandemic about it

06:20SPEAKERSo so I want to talk about your build because we're doing basically very similar builds

06:25SPEAKERI don't know if you're doing an output board, but I'm not planning on it the is not right now

06:29SPEAKERI know I I thought I was going to I started out just thinking like I'll just buy everything. Why not?

06:35SPEAKERLet's just get the whole kit and caboodle

06:37SPEAKERWho cares? Yeah, don't go big. That thing is what is the price on the i/o board? Is it 50 40 50 50?

06:44SPEAKERI guess 50 pushes it up to like 350 for the whole thing. Yeah. Yeah 325 for the whole thing

06:48SPEAKERBut as an individual part, I don't want to say it's around 50 bucks. That seems right

06:51SPEAKERIt gets you VGA out analog audio 3.5 millimeter out optical audio out

06:58SPEAKERWill it drive a arcade monitor - can you or is that a different thing? I don't know

07:02SPEAKERSo I think the VGA I'm getting close to talking out of my depth here

07:06SPEAKERBut I there are multiple standards that will come out of that VGA port

07:10SPEAKERScarred I saw there was a scarred after yeah one and still never quite understood. What scarred is the scarred scar RGB?

07:16SPEAKEROr the sub art is RGB plus with luminance. Okay other channels separated out as I understand

07:22SPEAKERI never I've never used I think scarred was a audio production thing or a euro thing. Okay

07:27SPEAKERI've never encountered it in real life

07:29SPEAKERLike I know that that portal do like VGA into an actual PC VGA monitor. It'll do scarred and stuff like that

07:35SPEAKERIf you have an actual CRT

07:36SPEAKERYou definitely want that board like I would if I have room for to get the old monitor out of my parents basement

07:41SPEAKERI would absolutely get that thing. But for me and you if you're using HDMI only it doesn't seem really worth the money

07:48SPEAKERThat's that's and it's not like you can't add it on later. Oh, yes, I can

07:52SPEAKERyeah, the two the two quality of life features on the IO board that are kind of universally good to have our it's got three

07:58SPEAKERButtons on it for like reboot and you know stuff like that. Ooh

08:01SPEAKERWhich is kind of nice to have but kind of whatever

08:05SPEAKERAnd it also serves as a fan mount. It has a mount on it directly over the the chip on the d10

08:13SPEAKERYou just put that on can't you just put that into your case though? No, there's nothing to mount it on by default

08:20SPEAKERWell, you mean but if you're making your case

08:22SPEAKERWell, I'm planning on laser cutting some cases. Yeah, so that design I sent you

08:27SPEAKERYeah, it had a hole exactly that. Yeah

08:30SPEAKERSo if you have access to a laser cutter or 3d printer their designs out there for just a dumb

08:35SPEAKERAnd by dumb, I mean no electronics in it

08:38SPEAKER2d cut or printed fan mount so you're on that tip right now

08:44SPEAKERThat's my plan when you have a laser cutter everything looks like it should be laser

08:47SPEAKERI was gonna mention to you earlier, but I'll just tell you now on the podcast that design

08:50SPEAKERI sent you has designs for top and bottom plates

08:53SPEAKERAnd if you have okay, if you haven't cut them yet, I think at least for me you can skip the bottom plate

08:57SPEAKERI don't see any reason to

08:59SPEAKERYou just leave no pants on your mister if you want to if you've got like extra acrylic lying around I won't turn it down

09:06SPEAKERBut you don't look totally don't have to sheets of acrylic cost

09:10SPEAKEREssentially nothing. Oh, really?

09:12SPEAKERThey're very inexpensive. Well, okay when I when I when I when it when it occurred to me to ask you if you would laser

09:17SPEAKERCut this for me

09:17SPEAKERI first thought I should at least provide him the raw

09:20SPEAKERMaterial some dude and I started looking around and I was like I found like some places charge an awful lot for laser

09:26SPEAKERCut acrylic, but maybe that's like a special

09:28SPEAKERit depends so

09:30SPEAKERLike if you go to tap plastics and you buy a big sheet and get them to cut it into pieces that will fit in

09:34SPEAKERYour cutter it costs like I don't know a couple of bucks a sheet probably. Well, I was looking at the wrong suppliers then

09:41SPEAKERwell, but also I bought a glow Forge and they did an affiliate code and I gave my affiliate code out when I was when I

09:48SPEAKERWas talking about the glow Forge a couple of times

09:50SPEAKERso a few people bought and they gave a certain amount of credit for materials for everyone that

09:55SPEAKEREveryone that bought a laser through your affiliate link, so I haven't bought materials in our wires

10:00SPEAKEROkay, for the I said, we're fine suddenly feel way less bad about asking you to laser cut that stuff

10:05SPEAKERI was thinking about doing my case in like in like a like maple or something like a fancy wouldn't doing a little stain

10:11SPEAKERSo it looks like a I don't think I'm gonna do a case actually for oh really a couple reason frames

10:18SPEAKERGod, there's so much to talk about with this thing. I'm trying to keep it all straight

10:22SPEAKERLet's talk about this so cooling

10:24SPEAKERYes, not it's not super crucial

10:27SPEAKERApparently that thing can manage without any kind of active cooling or even passive cooling

10:31SPEAKERBut like just those people seem to just want to extend the lifespan of that thing as long as they can so they are adding

10:36SPEAKERYeah into it

10:38SPEAKERSo I

10:39SPEAKERWanted I wanted the high-end knock to a fan which is quieter

10:43SPEAKERIt's not necessarily like better at cooling than the the $2 fan, but it's quieter and I think sold out everywhere

10:50SPEAKERSo I actually bought a bigger fan

10:52SPEAKERso there's a fan is not gonna fan any cases, so I

10:56SPEAKERsaw yesterday either in the tech pod discord or my my

11:01SPEAKERTwitch discord people were talking about there being a fan shortage. Yeah coolers in general are out of stock all over the place

11:07SPEAKERThat's what happened the Noctua that everybody buys for that thing. It's it's the dimensions are 40 by 40 by 10 millimeters and

11:15SPEAKERThat one is just gone. You can't get it right now

11:17SPEAKERThat's a weird low-profile fan, but there is a similar I should I shouldn't say this out loud

11:22SPEAKERYou should order one of these if you want it before this podcast goes up because there might be a run on them

11:27SPEAKERBut there's a there's another not gonna makes another fan that is 40 by 40 by 20

11:31SPEAKERSo it's double the height so it will fit it won't fit in a lot of the the standard case designs, but it

11:37SPEAKERIt's actually quieter than the 10 millimeter one, so it's actually better if you don't mind this fan being kind of

11:44SPEAKERYeah, like my fans thick brand yeah, well then I got I have the fan for you so I

11:50SPEAKERI've got heat sinks and thermal tape that I can peel you off

11:54SPEAKERBecause that stuff apparently only sells in bulk the the fuse the fewest

12:00SPEAKERHeat-sink so the heat sink the I think the biggest heat sink you want for a mister is 22 by 22 by 10

12:05SPEAKEROkay, and the fewest of those I could get was 10

12:09SPEAKERSo if you need a mister heat sink, I got you

12:12SPEAKERthere's something spectacular like there's something so there's a thing that had that the prop community does when like

12:19SPEAKERsomebody wants to make a bunch of Han Solo blasters or something is like

12:23SPEAKER40 people will each make one or two pieces or order one or two pieces or have them fabricated or whatever and then they all

12:30SPEAKERShare the pieces together and and like there's a thing about this mister that is that is happening

12:36SPEAKERYeah with this like I'm starting to get that by cases. You've got some cooling stuff. Oh

12:41SPEAKERYou know it's it's a lovely community project. Yeah next time next time next time we meet up

12:46SPEAKERWe can do a little swapsies. I'll get that fan mount from you, and I'll give you a heat sink with the thermal tape on it

12:51SPEAKEROh, I'm looking forward to it. I've got twenty thirty. I don't know how deep you want to get into this

12:55SPEAKERI bought some dupont cables. I had never heard of a dupont cable, and I don't know what a dupont cable is

13:00SPEAKERThey are they're used for breadboards, so this is an audio podcast

13:04SPEAKERSo it doesn't exactly play, but I could are they like the little jumper ones hold them up and show them to you right now

13:08SPEAKEROh, yeah, they're literally just like foot female on one end male on the other ends like I didn't know that for those were called

13:15SPEAKERYeah, I've never heard the term dupont cable before also like speaking of

13:19SPEAKERThe fewest of these I could get was 80. What do you need like - I need to

13:25SPEAKERI've also peel you off a couple of dupont cables

13:27SPEAKERThat's because I love that the diode board also has a fan an actual proper fan power connector

13:33SPEAKERAnd if you don't also you're jumping so if you yes

13:35SPEAKERSo if you don't have that your fan is gonna have to go into a couple of the GPIO pins directly on the DE 10

13:41SPEAKERGot and so okay, you'll need a couple of these. It's literally you're just connecting up the fan cable to the board itself

13:46SPEAKERso it's not a problem, but any point is like we'll do a little swap meet next time we are able to leave the house and

13:53SPEAKERGet that stuff set up. Yeah, that sounds good

13:55SPEAKERSo that's kind of the DIY cooling situation is you know like you'll you'll want to get a fan assuming you want a fan

14:01SPEAKERwell, you probably are okay with just a heat sink, but I

14:04SPEAKERlook I I

14:07SPEAKERMy my two concerns with this mister thing are that Intel will stop subsidizing the d10s at some point

14:13SPEAKERThat's that's been my and also yeah, so I want the one that I buy to last a long time

14:18SPEAKERAnd they're they're they're what they're like it's like 130 bucks or something

14:21SPEAKERIt's a little bit too expensive for me to buy just a spare to keep around or not disposable if it was 50 bucks

14:27SPEAKERI would buy two and I would have one in the closet

14:29SPEAKERThat's just there for when the first one shuts the bed. Yeah, especially cuz yeah like I said

14:33SPEAKERI will I'll give you a heat sink and the fan if you don't care about noise a $2 fan a $2 5 volt fan is

14:39SPEAKERPerfectly fine. I'm gonna plug this into a TV, and you know it's fine. Yeah, so

14:45SPEAKERWait so do you have your d10 yet? I haven't ordered it yet no

14:49SPEAKEROkay

14:50SPEAKERSo I've been digging around with mine since I don't have the RAM. There's very little I can do with it

14:55SPEAKERYeah, I

14:57SPEAKERWhat can you play just channel so Genesis and turbo graphics and I believe so like the Gameboy Advance core will run

15:03SPEAKERBut I believe not all games will work like the bigger games don't work cuz they need the RAM

15:07SPEAKEROkay, so I haven't tried GBA yet, but the turbo graphics and Genesis work just fine

15:11SPEAKERIt's on the turbo graphics you want to play Alex kid. I went straight to know that's a Sega joint

15:16SPEAKEROh, that's a Sega when I went straight to the beginning

15:19SPEAKERplayed some Keith courage in alpha zones turned into that the rain the rainbow came down from the heavens and I turned into a giant

15:25SPEAKERrobot I

15:26SPEAKERDon't think I've ever played a turbo graphics game. It's probably a questionable platform. It was better. It was better in Japan

15:33SPEAKEROkay, but it is one of the two cores that I can run without the SD Ram on that thing

15:37SPEAKERSo I've been fiddling with it, but the the main thing I've been fiddling with that on that thing actually is

15:42SPEAKERNetwork sharing. Oh, yeah, this is the core part of every classic classic console game is hooking it up to the network

15:50SPEAKERMost people buy a big SD card and just drag games directly onto it

15:54SPEAKERThat seems reasonable, but I've already got all my games on this network storage that I talk about all the time

15:59SPEAKERIt's nothing like adding an extra layer of complexity. So I just want to point the mister at that

16:05SPEAKERBut you can really connect the thing to the network. I didn't know that. Oh, yeah, it's got an ethernet port on it

16:10SPEAKEROnce you add USB ports, there are approved Wi-Fi adapters you can use

16:14SPEAKERIt totally works Wow. So

16:17SPEAKERNot a problem I was able to mount like the Linux kernel has Samba CIF s built right into it

16:22SPEAKERSo you can it's amazing. You can literally just use like command line level mount commands to mount your network share

16:28SPEAKERso I did that and

16:30SPEAKERIt works fine like near as I could tell I did some I did

16:33SPEAKERI mean I put some Genesis games directly on the SD card just to see and

16:37SPEAKERAs far as I can tell they load just about as fast over the network

16:40SPEAKERHow big an SD card are you talking about? Like 128 gigs or like a 32 set that I'm using?

16:46SPEAKERYeah, I'm using the a game with it because all I need is the OS on there

16:49SPEAKERBut like I think people are people are buying as big a card as they can get because some people are putting like just take

16:54SPEAKERA CD and PC engine CD games on there

16:56SPEAKERthere's something to be said about just having a box you can take to somebody's house and plug into a USB port totally and like

17:02SPEAKERPlug into HDMI and be good to go. I understand the appeal of having the game is like, you know

17:08SPEAKEREspecially cartridge games are small enough that I could still put a bunch of them directly on there if I want to but like for me

17:13SPEAKERIt's more about organizing

17:14SPEAKERlike only having to organize in one place and just kind of yeah a central repository because I'll probably also want to point a retroarch install

17:21SPEAKERat this same repository at some point

17:24SPEAKERSo so the thing the thing for me is that I like when I do this when I do these emulation projects

17:29SPEAKERI usually really curate the games that are available

17:33SPEAKERTo the point that it's only like maybe 20 or 30 games. Otherwise, it's just too overwhelming. Yeah

17:38SPEAKERI mean as of right now, I think I kind of want the whole set just to have the access to

17:42SPEAKERBarbie horse adventure if I need it. I like to play those Japanese horse racing Sims. They're pretty fun. Yeah

17:50SPEAKERSo so so I feel like there's a gotcha coming up with the with your network share

17:55SPEAKERI was debating whether to bring it up or not. So I I've mentioned I mentioned before I've got like local DNS

18:02SPEAKERHostname resolution set up in my router. Yeah, sounds like whatever

18:06SPEAKERBut I know it's really handy cuz I need to tell you name. Absolutely

18:10SPEAKERSo like especially now that I'm SSHing into like three or four different things on a regular basis

18:15SPEAKERNot having to remember new mayor or look up numeric IPS for everything is fucking amazing. Like yeah being able to

18:21SPEAKERYou know being able to connect to free nass dot land or mr. Dot land is so much better than having to remember those IPS

18:28SPEAKERSo I've been able to mount that share from the mr. Command line by numeric IP

18:32SPEAKERBut if I for the fucking life of me

18:34SPEAKERI cannot get it to mount by the hostname

18:36SPEAKERmeaning that if that IP ever changes I have to go into the mister and manually edit that IP to make it to update it to

18:41SPEAKERPoint to the new address, right? So I have spent fucking week

18:46SPEAKERlooking at net bios

18:48SPEAKERresolution and like

18:50SPEAKERbucking around in SMB conf and using SMB client to try to

18:55SPEAKERFigure out what's going on there and I just cannot get it to resolve that hostname and it's kissing me

19:00SPEAKERIt's killing. Is it a problem? Is it the Linux? Is it not is it not?

19:05SPEAKERRegistering the name on the DNS. I can only decide I don't know I can like I can ping that hostname and it returns it

19:11SPEAKERIt pings and and sees the numeric IP just fine

19:14SPEAKERCan so is it Samba seems very particular about the way that it resolves host names, which is separate from how the base system does it?

19:22SPEAKERThis site so I had this problem. I said with the free nass box and I couldn't get my Linux machine which was running

19:28SPEAKEROctopi my 3d print thing to show up at all. I know exactly this exact same problem in a very similar situation

19:34SPEAKERI eventually just put a host file entry in for the places that I use right the most

19:41SPEAKERAnd that solves the problem enough that I didn't care about it anymore

19:43SPEAKERRight, like I could just stick with the numeric IP and move on with my life

19:46SPEAKERI just refused to admit defeat at this point. So I'm gonna keep banging on it, but

19:50SPEAKERCuz it is annoying like I changed my do not change my network IP range a couple weeks ago

19:57SPEAKERThat sounds like a nightmare it was it was a pain for a few days. I but I bring you a 10.15. Yes

20:03SPEAKER10.0

20:04SPEAKER10.0 old choice. It's fewer dude is fewer numbers to type. That's like true. How many different that is?

20:11SPEAKERIt's at least three less digits every time I type an IP on my network now. I mean, it's it's funny

20:18SPEAKERI switched to a tenkeyless keyboard a couple years ago

20:21SPEAKERand the only time I miss it is when I'm tax season when I have to do a bunch of spreadsheet stuff and

20:26SPEAKERThen also when I'm typing an IP addresses because I got bang out of 192.1 six eight

20:31SPEAKERUnbelievable. Yeah, I can't I can't live without the numpad. I need it. I

20:36SPEAKERHave an external one I pull out in April

20:38SPEAKERso so like I so that the Raspberry Pi that I use is my nut server has to has to have a

20:44SPEAKERstatic IP for a variety of reasons

20:47SPEAKERAnd like that's that's the example like when I change my network range

20:49SPEAKERI forgot to update that IP beforehand. So then I had to crawl under the desk and like

20:54SPEAKERPull out the Raspberry Pi where it is buried and like hook it up to a TV and then edit the IP manually

20:59SPEAKERSo like that's why that's why I try to use host names for everything because it all just works

21:03SPEAKEROnce it's set up do you do fixed IPs for the host the ones with the host names just for just just just just for that

21:09SPEAKERRaspberry Pi. Oh, wait. Wait. Yeah. No, I let the DHCP assign IPs to everything

21:14SPEAKEROh, see I fix I fix everything that's static and just do it

21:17SPEAKERI could I could just I could just set a static IP for the free NAS machine and then not have this problem

21:23SPEAKERBut I like your commitment to doing it the right way bread news. I like your commitment to doing it the right way

21:28SPEAKERYeah, anyway, Mr. Is a fun project the last thing real quick. I'll say I just found a

21:32SPEAKERKind of a handy tip if you happen to be running your mister into a video capture setup like I am

21:40SPEAKERInstead of having to change inputs on my monitor to see what's on coming out of the mister

21:44SPEAKERWhich you obviously you lose your most of your Windows desktop that way

21:47SPEAKERThe camera app in Windows 10 is a pretty handy way to see what is coming into your HDMI capture. Oh

21:54SPEAKERSo like you could use the OBS for this or you could like straight up start a Google Hangout and also pipe it in that

21:59SPEAKERWay, but the camera app is like literally just open start menu and type camera. It's made for webcams

22:05SPEAKERIt's made for like taking pictures yourself or whatever. It's just a dinky tiny little lightweight app

22:09SPEAKERLittle it'll take the take the feed of any video to like video in device that's coming in the windows

22:14SPEAKERWow, I didn't know you could do that. I don't think my I don't think mine

22:18SPEAKERI don't think my capture card works with it. I don't think it's the right drivers

22:21SPEAKEROh, I can't find a way to change the device in the camera app. It seems to just pick one

22:26SPEAKERYeah, so with my webcam or plug it pulls up the the mage well capture device that I'm using

22:30SPEAKERso anyway, it's like it's a nice way to have like, you know, the

22:34SPEAKERMr. Console window open in one app and the video out open in another window

22:39SPEAKERKind of give that guy back and forth for testing and stuff. So that's my so I that's my mister

22:44SPEAKERSet up right now. Yeah, there you go. That's fun. I

22:48SPEAKERI got tired of using voice meter to deal with streams and podcasts and stuff like that

22:54SPEAKERReally voice meter is a software mixer and this problem is awesome in concept

23:01SPEAKERIt's it is an incredibly powerful tool. The problem with it is you can't really monitor

23:07SPEAKERIt doesn't give you a way to monitor your audio program feed live

23:11SPEAKERlike if you're street like I've been doing a lot of streaming because it's the I

23:16SPEAKERMy work is dead right now

23:18SPEAKERso I've been doing a lot of streaming and

23:21SPEAKERsince I can't monitor the program feed when like somebody's low or my game is hot or I'm not the list audible next to that I

23:29SPEAKERYou can't hear anything and also when voice meter crashes you you don't get feedback

23:34SPEAKERSo you don't know that something's gone wrong

23:36SPEAKEROh until I don't necessarily even like till somebody says somebody in your chat says hey, no, yeah, okay

23:40SPEAKERAnd so I'm working on a project that requires me to be able to do recordings that I need to be able to monitor

23:46SPEAKERbut I don't have somebody here to monitor them because I'm doing it in my house and

23:50SPEAKERI

23:51SPEAKERWent bought a mixer nice and I asked the internet and I asked Jason from giant bomb and a bunch of other folks and

23:59SPEAKERA lot of people were like look you probably this with with an analog like a stock like a Yamaha analog mixer

24:04SPEAKERLike the ones we used to use whiskey and the ones we used for the tested podcast for years

24:08SPEAKERbut if you want to up at a level maybe add

24:14SPEAKERMaybe add a little bit of

24:17SPEAKERPizzazz, yeah get some digital goodness in there

24:21SPEAKERBarringer makes these these these mixers these digital mixers that are the x-airs

24:26SPEAKERBarringer sounds like a company that makes audio hardware and also military hardware

24:31SPEAKERLike like I would not be surprised to hear that. They also manufacture ar-15s or something

24:36SPEAKERIt just sounds like a rough-and-tumble company name. I think they're English. They're probably quite polite and yeah

24:42SPEAKERHe's out for the tea or whatever

24:45SPEAKERBut uh, but yeah the so I got the xr-18 which is the for the lowest end model that does a

24:53SPEAKERUSB out so that I can plug into it as a show up shows up as a da da W in my windows interface and

25:02SPEAKERHoly crap, I have spent so much time

25:05SPEAKERLearning how to use this. So this is the baby version of what you guys use in the studio giant, okay

25:09SPEAKERso like you the thing that almost looks like something in a recording studio like a

25:13SPEAKERMusical recording studio like it has wings tons of knives and sliders and stuff like that none. No knobs. No sliders

25:20SPEAKERI could rack mount this thing. Oh, it has rack mounts

25:23SPEAKEROkay, I now I now I get what you're saying and it has 18 ends and like eight or nine outs. Wow

25:29SPEAKERWait, wait, how do you control all that stuff? So I have an iPad or there's an app on my windows machine

25:36SPEAKERSo, you know the iPad that Jason carries around in the studio is that that's it's that thing. Yeah. Oh wow. So so

25:43SPEAKERThat's why Andy because it's all software you can route everything everywhere. So like I have buses

25:50SPEAKERSo it's designed for like live stage shows and studio stuff

25:54SPEAKERso like if you're doing this for a band then you have a

25:57SPEAKERlive mix a different mix goes to the drum and a different mix goes to the vocals and different mix goes to the lead guitar and

26:04SPEAKERThey all want to hear different instruments at different levels so they can keep keep pace with each other. I

26:09SPEAKERDon't need any of that stuff

26:11SPEAKERBut it has let me set up

26:13SPEAKERdiscord on one bus game audio on one bus my audio on one bus and

26:19SPEAKERI can't what the last thing is. Oh

26:22SPEAKERLike like stream notifications and stuff like that sure or music and it has been absolutely fascinating

26:29SPEAKERIt sounds so great to be able to split all that stuff out

26:32SPEAKERwell, and it also includes so like in a normal analog mixer like those Yamaha mixers we used to use remember when Vinnie got the

26:38SPEAKERCompressor and all of a sudden we could yell on when we were doing the live show

26:41SPEAKERYes

26:42SPEAKERSo it has this like normal analog mixers have kind of shitty compressors built in this thing actually has software modeled compressors built in

26:50SPEAKERI don't know how that stuff works. But like I can it does I can yeah, I haven't figured out how to work that stuff yet

26:55SPEAKEROh, it's it's this has been a like last night. I figured out how to mute stuff

27:00SPEAKERUsing my stream deck. Oh, so that was very exciting. Sure. It's been a it's been a gradual process steps

27:05SPEAKERExactly sounds awesome though, and it's really it's been really fun

27:08SPEAKERSo how many devices are you seeing or in windows or is it how many devices is windows seeing?

27:13SPEAKERI should say like how many extra sound ins and outs are you suddenly?

27:18SPEAKERjuggling and so so

27:20SPEAKERby default it shows up as one MME device one stereo MME device or

27:27SPEAKERMME or WDM audio model, but if you're using software that speaks assio, which is the low latency

27:34SPEAKERIt's a it's a closed source

27:37SPEAKERLicensed low low latency protocol for

27:42SPEAKERConnecting audio devices to computers basically and audio devices to other other audio devices

27:47SPEAKERAnd if you use that that shows up as like 18 18 inputs Wow

27:52SPEAKERAnd then you can pipe like I'll I'll send me I'll push the screenshot in the show notes or something

27:57SPEAKERbut like if you post the ins and outs then you can see the whole like you can send any of the

28:05SPEAKERsliders on the on the digital thing can be either USB input from the other computer or

28:10SPEAKERa line in or a microphone or an instrument or whatever

28:15SPEAKERSo I guess I'm gonna have to get a keyboard is that they are here. Sure

28:19SPEAKERSo what are what are some examples of software you're using that supports that that assio standard?

28:23SPEAKERLike does OBS do that or do you need like higher-end professional stuff? So OBS doesn't because it's not compatible with the licensing for OBS

28:31SPEAKERsure

28:32SPEAKERBut voice meter does okay. So what I'm doing now is using voice meter to route stuff into specific inputs

28:39SPEAKERYeah, so it's got tools on virtuals on virtuals

28:42SPEAKERLook, it's virtual. It's it's just mixers all the way down now Brad

28:46SPEAKERit's it's been

28:48SPEAKERlike this is one of the things that I finished my stream at like midnight the other night and I was like

28:52SPEAKERI'm gonna plug in this new mixer and see how this goes because I at first I was like

28:56SPEAKERI'm gonna clear off my entire desk unwire unhook everything. I'm do a clean wiring job and then I was like, oh wait

29:02SPEAKERThat's a bad idea

29:03SPEAKERThat is a because I could tell you from experience over the last month. That is the multi-day project

29:08SPEAKERWell, but not only that I was like I have to make sure I have all the wires right before I do that

29:12SPEAKERLike I need to figure out how this actually works

29:14SPEAKERokay before I go through and

29:16SPEAKERLike tear everything down and rebuild it cuz then what's gonna happen is I'll fuck something up and I'll have to just redo the whole

29:21SPEAKERThing again. Sure. So so I didn't I didn't tear it all down

29:25SPEAKERI just I like scooch the ps4 forward six inches and just jam the mixer in behind that

29:31SPEAKERThat's the noisiest part of the desk. That's always the first step

29:34SPEAKERAnd then I ran a bunch of like my short right right length cables hadn't come yet

29:39SPEAKERSo I just ran a bunch of 20 foot XLR cables along the back of my desk, which is not ideal and I got it working

29:46SPEAKERBut it was one of those ones where like three o'clock in the morning. I was sitting here

29:49SPEAKERI was like clicking a button to see and then I was playing on the streaming PC

29:52SPEAKERI was playing Spotify on one output. I was playing YouTube on another output on the game PC. I was playing

29:59SPEAKERSpotify on one output and something else under their output and I just kept hitting buttons to see what worked until it was like a

30:06SPEAKERinfinite number of monkeys in front of an infinite number of switches and eventually I worked it out and an infinite number of virtual audio devices

30:12SPEAKERIt turns out all the all the virtual audio devices

30:14SPEAKERBut thanks to Jason and Vinny and all the people that helped answer questions on that because the discord

30:20SPEAKERThe audio channel on the discord was incredibly useful and I was deciding what to buy that seems that stuff seems super powerful

30:26SPEAKERYou're you're doing it the right way like learn how to use it first and then run all the cables

30:29SPEAKERBut is the is the full on desk rewire still in your future?

30:34SPEAKERBecause I dude it's so satisfying I know it's a ton of work and it's a huge pain in the ass

30:38SPEAKERBut it's so much better at the end. Hey Brett, how's your monitors doing right now?

30:42SPEAKERYou got those new monitors and yeah, just I'm not changing the subject. That's not all

30:47SPEAKERFucking the 15 year old monitors are in the floor

30:50SPEAKERNew shit right now

30:52SPEAKERso I'm gonna I'm gonna tear I'm gonna pull everything out at some point in the not to just in the future because like

30:58SPEAKERThis stuff is not there's a better way to arrange things

31:01SPEAKERAnd and I want to get like separate headphone ins and outs set up where it's easy to plug in and unplug

31:07SPEAKERAnd all that stuff. So it is it is a huge undertaking and a huge pain in the ass if you're set up as anything like

31:13SPEAKERMine, but oh like dude, you have no I do

31:16SPEAKERSatisfying and so much easier when you're done like people like we get this all the fucking time

31:20SPEAKERBut like people are always just like what are the what are they just streaming eight hours a day?

31:25SPEAKERWhat else are they doing, you know and in this particular work-at-home case?

31:28SPEAKERLike I was the better part of two weeks for me like just about every day at some point

31:32SPEAKERI was on I was lying down on my back under the desk like pulling cables through mounts and

31:37SPEAKERhooking stuff up and it was like it was just a massive undertaking but it was

31:41SPEAKERSo worth it because I feel like I'm at the point now where I can just plug in a switch or a ps4 or this mister

31:46SPEAKERAnd just go, you know, like it's literally 30 seconds to plug something in and hit go

31:51SPEAKERSo that's the next such a it's such a useful investment of time to get all this stuff set up

31:55SPEAKERThat's where I want to get is I have like I have the right

32:00SPEAKERSplitters and stuff to be able to switch from switch to ps4 or whatever. I've got this

32:05SPEAKEROn me. Well, well, I mean I still have to unplug a cable, right?

32:08SPEAKERBut it's like okay the in into the splitter one half goes to a monitor the other half goes to the capture card

32:14SPEAKERThat's what I've got and that like setting that up. So I don't have to crawl under the table to unplug shop

32:19SPEAKERStuff is so good. So good

32:22SPEAKERBut yeah, the next the next phase is to like think about routing audio cables

32:27SPEAKERSo I'm not picking up weird noise from crossing like monitor power and stuff like that

32:31SPEAKERBut also have the have the the XLR ends and the headphone outs

32:35SPEAKERIs she good where they're easily accessible and all that stuff should get one get one of those ground loop isolators

32:41SPEAKERIt's good. It's good to have around needed one. It's good to have around you to solve my problem in a

32:46SPEAKERMiraculous way. I so I had I did have a ground loop when I was setting this up and

32:51SPEAKERI solved it by taking a piece of metal a piece of wire

32:55SPEAKEROkay, and hooking it on to the the shield from the head from from the XLR in

33:01SPEAKERHooking it just touching it to piece of metal on the back of my monitor and that's all the problem. It also works

33:06SPEAKERIt's it's everything's better now. I don't know just physics. Yeah, you just gotta tell those electrons where to go

33:13SPEAKERexactly now

33:15SPEAKERShould we move on to the next thing?

33:17SPEAKERYeah, I like this project corner put cornucopia. This is fun going on. You know, we're just stuck at home right now

33:24SPEAKERI gotta find stuff to do

33:25SPEAKERThe projects why don't we talk about you wanna talk about my free Nast backup extravaganza as I yeah as I have labeled it here

33:33SPEAKERIn this doc. Nothing's more fun than backup backing up. That's what I always say that we've done the restore yet

33:38SPEAKERThat's the question virtuals on virtuals to backups of backups

33:43SPEAKERAlthough really I mean I have been working on this but really this is just a gateway to talk into this

33:48SPEAKERInto discussing this week's scandalous news story. I

33:52SPEAKERWe don't don't normally do news here. But as it is core to our interests

33:56SPEAKERI think it's worth getting into is a lot of people on our discord have been also talking about it

34:00SPEAKERI have been personally affected by it's we're gonna have to discuss it cuz I'm in a fit of peak over it at the moment

34:06SPEAKERWhat what is the scandal Brad? Should we just get right to that?

34:10SPEAKERYou look you've teased it enough talk too much about it. So

34:14SPEAKERApparently, there are actually only like three actual manufacturers of hard drives left at this point

34:18SPEAKERIt's Western digital Western Digital Seagate and Toshiba. Yeah, I guess everybody else is out of that game in terms actually making them

34:25SPEAKERThey're just anybody else selling hard drives is just rebadging one of those

34:29SPEAKERDo you think in like 20 years people are gonna be like man?

34:31SPEAKERYou can't play Xbox original Xbox games without a hard drive if the load times aren't there. You're not getting the core experience

34:37SPEAKERIt's just it's like CRT is if you're saying that hard drives are going the way of CRT is I am completely fine with that

34:45SPEAKERfuck hard drive

34:47SPEAKERLike even even in the best situation just the risk of mechanical failure and all that stuff just no thanks, but this is worse

34:53SPEAKERThis is way worse. What did they do? So the three manufacturers do I hope I've got a handle on this

34:59SPEAKERI've pretty I got a decent understanding of it at this point

35:02SPEAKERThe short version is there is a new type of platter technology and hard drives called SMR, which is a shingled

35:08SPEAKERI should have had this in front of me. Yeah, it's like the bag of nuts on YouTube

35:13SPEAKERDo you the person touches this bag and it makes a scratchy sound in your microphone makes you get tingles in your spine?

35:18SPEAKERIt's known as SMR in the community. Yeah, people are way into it

35:23SPEAKERNo, it's it's a shingled magnetic recording is the name of it. So does it sound fun? The the upshot is that the

35:30SPEAKERthe read and write tracks on a normal hard drive are

35:33SPEAKERkind of adjacent each other like you would expect and in this and in this shingled

35:40SPEAKERVersion of that the read and write tracks actually overlap like shingles on a roof

35:45SPEAKERWow, the reason the whole reason this exists is is it is my understanding is it is simply a play to

35:51SPEAKERIncrease the density of data storage on this in the same amount of space which makes sense, right?

35:56SPEAKERSo they're taking an overlap instead of instead of being end-to-end which means they can cram more into the same amount of physical space

36:02SPEAKERThis is like when they switch the bits from being horizontal on the parallel to the platter to being perpendicular to find their kind of

36:09SPEAKERYeah, but but now they're just they're angled in on top of each other

36:12SPEAKERThere are mechanics to the way that reads and writes happen on hard drives on magnetic platters that I don't fully grasp here

36:18SPEAKEROkay, the upshot is it's a cheaper and more efficient way to cram more data into the same amount of space at

36:24SPEAKERThe cost of at the massive cost of performance

36:27SPEAKERWhat what exactly performance is impacted? So from what I understand I think I've got this, right?

36:34SPEAKERThese SMR hard drives actually function a lot like the SSDs do with trim

36:39SPEAKERTrim is basically a process of the SSD going in and handling or the OS depending on what level it's happening out

36:45SPEAKERBut it's a garbage collection feature of it's going in and rearranging stuff during kind of idle times or when it can

36:50SPEAKERYeah, but it so there's a on SSDs

36:54SPEAKERThere's a mechanical like rights the basically the each cell has to be prepared for a right after there's been data in it, right?

37:00SPEAKERSo if you if you're doing that during downtime, there's no impact if you do that during a right then your rights slow down dramatically

37:07SPEAKERSo this is a similar situation except that here it's because these tracks overlap and so shipping these drives with trim

37:14SPEAKERSo yes

37:15SPEAKERNot to get ahead of ourselves

37:16SPEAKERBut the way people have found this because these companies did not disclose that they were starting to slip these into the channel

37:22SPEAKERis by pulling a bunch of like hardcore like

37:26SPEAKERlike smart Mon tools

37:28SPEAKERdiagnostic info off of them to see like what features they support and finding that these hard drives are reporting having some kind of trim support which

37:35SPEAKERWeird it makes no sense for a hard drive at least in a classical sense, right?

37:39SPEAKERbut it's because so it's because these drives don't write to themselves exactly like they

37:44SPEAKERLike you think they do like they don't directly write to where the data is supposed to go

37:48SPEAKERYeah, there's a I believe the site is called blocks and files. Let me check. Yes blocks and files

37:53SPEAKERYeah, that's the name. I hadn't heard of it. It sounds like it's pretty kind of hardcore storage

37:58SPEAKERenthusiasts site I

38:00SPEAKERLike their infographics, but they have and maybe this is a sign of just how far down the NAS pole. I've gone I

38:06SPEAKERShould never say that again

38:09SPEAKERThat I find this interview incredibly entertaining

38:11SPEAKERThat's an interview with a guy who is the network manager at a British University who has a ton of hands-on experience with the stuff

38:17SPEAKERThe upshot is these SMR drives do not work

38:20SPEAKERWell in raids at all like to the point that they are basically useless

38:23SPEAKERLike they fail constantly a lot of raid setups are just gonna reject them out of hand because they don't work, right?

38:29SPEAKERAnd he describes a situation

38:31SPEAKERwhere

38:33SPEAKERbasically, these drives have a bunch of like DRAM cache and

38:36SPEAKERThen they will have a small amount of CMR, which is the standard

38:40SPEAKERI forget the C stands for but CMR is the previous it's what all hard drives were until SMR came along

38:45SPEAKEROkay, a constant maybe conventional conventional magnetic control is what all our drives have been up until this new technology

38:53SPEAKERSo he basically describes a layered process of like there's some DRAM cache

38:57SPEAKERthere's a small amount of CMR space on the platters and then a bunch of SMR and that the drives themselves are

39:05SPEAKERYou know kind of temporarily writing data in the CMR area and then in downtime

39:09SPEAKERthey will move that data over into the SMR at a much slower rate and

39:14SPEAKERSo file systems like CFS and like hardcore NAS type setups raid setups that expect hard drives to behave like hard drives are

39:22SPEAKERFlipping the fuck out about this and just like rejecting these drives completely

39:25SPEAKERwell, okay, so I was gonna say so this seems like like this isn't if I have a PC and I want to have like a

39:32SPEAKERMedia storage drive this doesn't seem like that big a deal, right?

39:35SPEAKERLike I like this could be a good way to get a cheap big drives. It is it is okay for random reads

39:41SPEAKERI believe it's really bad at random rights. It's really bad at random rights. That's when it grinds to a halt

39:47SPEAKERHuh? So this SMR technology and this is why this is scandalous is that these this tech has been around for a while and apparently

39:53SPEAKERIt's like very popular in the archival and kind of cold storage space

39:57SPEAKERlike if you're gonna write a bunch of data to a drive sequentially once and then like

40:01SPEAKERYeah, never change it and just read from it or even better like stick in a closet and not touch it

40:05SPEAKERIt's fine makes a ton of sense, but for high-performance

40:10SPEAKERerratic type read-write situations it is completely useless and

40:15SPEAKERnone of these manufacturers have disclosed that they have

40:18SPEAKERSilently started slipping this new type of drive into their old product lines

40:23SPEAKERWell, they're not even putting in the NAS lines, right? They're just putting it on the consumer drive

40:29SPEAKERWestern digital's red line like certain sizes. I believe it's the two to six terabyte tier of the red line is these drives now

40:36SPEAKERThe two terabyte tier to two to six like the higher the bigger the drive the less likely it sounds like they're not shipping this

40:42SPEAKERIn like eight to ten to twelve

40:44SPEAKERTerabyte drives right now. I'd find them. Well, I'm not

40:51SPEAKERSo I bought I have four Reds in my NAS and they have worked fantastically

40:55SPEAKERFor two I have four red eight terabyte drives in my NAS

40:58SPEAKERYou're fine and bottom if yeah, if you bought them, they're old more than a year. You're totally fine two or three years ago

41:03SPEAKERYeah, but I bought a fifth red of the same size six terabytes last summer just as a spare

41:09SPEAKERYeah, cuz you know the shingled it's good good practice

41:12SPEAKERGot the shingles. Keep a cold spare in the closet. You don't want to yeah, like you get it's like the chicken pox

41:18SPEAKERBut you do a little bow that sucks drive

41:21SPEAKERWhy would they put these in the NAS drive makes no sense at all kinds of speculation about it

41:26SPEAKERLike they're basically just sounds like they probably didn't test this in a lot of the actual workloads that will be happening a lot of NAS

41:32SPEAKERscenarios

41:35SPEAKERIt's gotten it's it's it's widespread enough at this point like like on in tech

41:39SPEAKERNoticed this stuff a few months ago and didn't really report on this like bait-and-switch, which is exactly what this is

41:44SPEAKERBut they did say like hey avoid these SMR drives like they're not what you want

41:49SPEAKERIX systems who is the company behind free ass and true NASA and they make like enterprise

41:56SPEAKERYou know systems. Yeah, like they don't get a free open source thing like their actual businesses is

42:01SPEAKEREnterprise NAS boxes and support for corporations

42:05SPEAKERLike that, you know, they sell they sell machines that are the cost Tim's to hundreds of thousands of dollars

42:10SPEAKERYeah, they're making file servers these days. Yeah, they they have a

42:14SPEAKERexplicit stance that you should not be putting SMR drives in NASA's

42:18SPEAKERWhich sucks ass because as of right now according to this interview with this network manager, they are still putting Reds in

42:24SPEAKERIn their enterprise boxes and he actually contacted them and they were unaware of this issue

42:29SPEAKERSo it feels like it's like ours Technica picked it up this morning. Like it feels like it is

42:34SPEAKEROn because this is people like I'm fucking pissed man. Like I paid because the Reds are a premium. It's a premium

42:40SPEAKERYeah, you're paying a premium for a longer warranty and like these are drives that are supposed to spend 24/7 for like years

42:47SPEAKERAt a time. Yeah, and you were paying a premium for that

42:50SPEAKERThese aren't like you're not shucking a consumer portable drive off the shelf

42:53SPEAKERlike you're paying them extra money and they like it feels like just a deceit or deception of the worst kind to

43:01SPEAKERYou know, like you're kind of betraying the people who are should be your most loyal customers by giving them like a substandard product

43:07SPEAKERit's just here and I mean the unfortunate thing about the whole thing is

43:11SPEAKERlike if instead of a

43:14SPEAKERThe idea of it using having one part of the drive that is that is like the good good for rights part

43:20SPEAKERMeans that you're gonna be doing the least efficient kind of moving

43:24SPEAKERfrom from one place on the platter to the other place of platter on the platter and that's just gonna

43:29SPEAKERJust flatten your performance and then exactly what's happening?

43:33SPEAKERYeah, I'm this is this is unfortunate. They seem they seem to be of the mind that if like it

43:38SPEAKERLike you said if you were using this on a desktop for just kind of like scratch storage like whatever

43:42SPEAKERIt's yeah, probably fine because the drive then has a bunch of idle time to do its to handle its business

43:48SPEAKERYeah, but the problem is like if you have a drive fail in a raid and you put one of these in and that

43:52SPEAKERYou're basically oh, yeah this this you're reading you're rebuilding what was on the failed drive, right?

43:57SPEAKERSo you were right out to the entirety of the disk for like hours and hours at a time

44:02SPEAKERSo that drive that needs all this downtime to handle its own garbage collection type stuff

44:06SPEAKERGets none of that time

44:08SPEAKERor gonna show the bad or it or it insists it insists on taking that time and stalls out and that's why the raid sees

44:13SPEAKERIt as a failed drive and like boots it out of the array

44:16SPEAKERso

44:18SPEAKERThere's an amazing quote at the end of this interview. I mentioned

44:22SPEAKERWhere they have lock and piles one. Yeah where they ask this network manager

44:25SPEAKERLike hey, were you ever ever able to actually get one of these drives to work as a replacement in an array?

44:30SPEAKERand he says I

44:32SPEAKERwas able to force the drive to resilver which is this term for

44:36SPEAKERFor replacing a drive in a ZFS raid by switching off right caching and look ahead

44:42SPEAKERThis dropped the drives right speed to less than six megabytes per second and the resolver shit and the resolver ring took eight days

44:49SPEAKERinstead of the more usual 24 hours

44:52SPEAKERMore worryingly

44:54SPEAKEROnce added a ZFS scrub, which is a raid integrity check has yet to successfully complete without that drive producing checksum errors

45:01SPEAKEREven after five days of trying so so so you literally how you literally have high-end drives that are targeted at the NAS market

45:09SPEAKERThat are the fail when you put them in an assless in in very specific common NASA. It was like it's mind-blowing

45:17SPEAKERThat this is happening

45:18SPEAKERLike I like I don't know how because I bought this drive last summer

45:22SPEAKERLike it's not like I can return it to the vendor anymore

45:26SPEAKERBut it's but I bought it as a replacement for when one of the drives fails in my NASA and like it's not it will

45:30SPEAKERNot it will not work for that. So what am I gonna do with it?

45:34SPEAKERThat sucks. Like it's it's like I feel like I should call Western Digital and tell them

45:39SPEAKERYeah, give me a new drive. You need to fix this or I'm probably done buying Western Digital products products forever. I I think

45:49SPEAKERWow, I like I can't I can't even a met like how do they make this right?

45:53SPEAKERThey're gonna have to replace millions of drives

45:55SPEAKERWell, and so I haven't even like we were being

45:57SPEAKERJustifiably hard on Western Digital

45:59SPEAKERBut it has come to light in the last like 24 hours that see gate and Toshiba are also doing this with various product lines. Oh

46:06SPEAKERBoy, so it's kind of everywhere like it is. I mean this seems like a problem that a

46:12SPEAKERMaybe ZFS can change the way works, but it sounds like from the way you're describing the problem

46:17SPEAKERIt seems like that isn't possible the the the opinion of this in this interview that is

46:22SPEAKERExpressed is that it needs to happen at like the drive firmware level

46:25SPEAKERYeah, so it's possible that

46:28SPEAKERLike you can switch the drive to ZFS mode or something and then it handles it differently

46:34SPEAKERBut it sounds like but it's but it sounds like that's just gonna be a band-aid on the problem because this technology

46:39SPEAKERInherently is just slower and less efficient

46:42SPEAKERwell, like it seems like if they put an if they put like an SSD style cache on the drive that could be instead of

46:48SPEAKERPutting it on the platter that might solve the problem maybe

46:51SPEAKERBut but yeah

46:52SPEAKERBut then it's still gonna make three silvers take a really long time and the bigger problem is like yeah

46:57SPEAKERIs you you bought something and not and got?

47:00SPEAKERSomething else, you know, like you yeah, they don't deliver the product that people have

47:04SPEAKEROver years come to expect that they were buying. Well, we all it's I mean, yeah

47:10SPEAKERHonestly, I mean it's picking up like a lot outrage in various tech spaces

47:13SPEAKERLike I said our stars technica and some other bigger tech sites are starting to run with it

47:18SPEAKERIt honestly it almost feels like it has the makings of a class-action lawsuit

47:23SPEAKERThe only thing that I wonder about is if this is such a niche market that there might not be enough members to justify forming

47:29SPEAKERa class

47:30SPEAKERLook, but I don't think about all the hard drives that go into servers every day. That's true. And yeah, yeah

47:35SPEAKERif even even even companies like IX systems are being blindsided by this like that's

47:40SPEAKERGoogle and Amazon and and Microsoft and all the people that run big cloud servers get their drives from somewhere and

47:46SPEAKERLike probably they're speccing to not get these drives

47:49SPEAKERBut maybe not who knows like we'll see like backlays is why I bought WD Reds because they yeah

47:54SPEAKERPublish their stats and like they had good failure rate statistics and I can't you can't trust any of that stuff anymore

48:01SPEAKERIt's a failure rate statistics still but well, yeah. Yeah, or what?

48:05SPEAKERI mean is like those those those numbers are going to change because the technology has changed. It's just an insane situation

48:10SPEAKERI just don't know what decision-making process could have led to

48:15SPEAKERWhat was that Brad we can make these drives for 10% less. Yeah, I'll make the good drive help and

48:22SPEAKERThat's gonna make X that means that our bonuses are gonna be a lot better

48:26SPEAKERThat is probably the most offensive aspect of this whole thing is it's not like they were passing the savings along to the consumer

48:33SPEAKEROh, yeah. No, I mean, it's not like the drives are expensive drives did not get massively cheaper

48:39SPEAKERIt's God. It's it's repugnant man

48:44SPEAKERAnyway, well on that happy note

48:48SPEAKERYou got going on I

48:51SPEAKERspent yesterday

48:52SPEAKERNoodling with Minecraft RTX. Oh

48:55SPEAKERThe ray traced version the long rumored long confirmed. I guess ray traced version of Minecraft

49:01SPEAKERAnd I fired it up yesterday with my daughter and we did she's my Minecraft expert. We did some minecrafting

49:09SPEAKERIt's really neat the lighting and stuff is works that what they did was added for so a normal Minecraft

49:15SPEAKERTexture has two layers for the the actual texture and then the transparency

49:20SPEAKERso for example, like a railroad track has you know, the track the track part that you can see and

49:27SPEAKERThen also has a transparency map that tells the game which parts of it are, you know, it's just a straight mask

49:33SPEAKERSo like when you load up the second layer of the texture

49:36SPEAKERThere's a black place where the where the tracks are not like an alpha channel or whatever

49:40SPEAKERBasically, um, so they added four new

49:44SPEAKERchannels to the textures for I think luminance

49:50SPEAKERMetal metal enos like how shiny it is. Yeah, whether it's um, yeah emissive

49:56SPEAKERWhich is how much light it produces we're Friday's like probably

50:00SPEAKERwell, so I think the I think the

50:03SPEAKERBecause that would be like glass and water and stuff like that, right?

50:06SPEAKERYeah, so there's definitely a refractive but they don't mention it in the in the white paper on a video site

50:11SPEAKERI'll put out white paper. That's awesome, but they don't do their white papers on white papers

50:16SPEAKERAnd I love when video games are also research projects

50:19SPEAKERYeah, I love what else I love when the worlds of like games and academia collide or it is it's very cool

50:27SPEAKERRoughness in a height map a normal map is the other thing. Okay, so so

50:34SPEAKERBasically I

50:35SPEAKERSo basically in order to get into the beta you have to download it's the bedrock bedrock edition only so your Java stuff doesn't work

50:42SPEAKERLike your Java mods and all that stuff. Yeah, it's unfortunate that that split exists, but I guess I get it

50:47SPEAKERI think having played a fair amount of both lately

50:51SPEAKERthe Java one I

50:54SPEAKERYeah, I don't know

50:55SPEAKERit seems it seems like it exists because it has mods in a large player base not because it's a

51:01SPEAKERCutting-edge technology. That's exactly the case. But I mean they could bring that modding infrastructure over if they wanted to write

51:09SPEAKERLike it seems like maybe it seems like they have chosen to like because they're monetizing bedrock servers quite a bit and that kind of

51:14SPEAKERThing it seems like they've tried to keep it as much more of a closed system

51:18SPEAKERYeah, they're like they're monetizing on realms and on content

51:21SPEAKERSo you can buy like content packs and texture packs and stuff like that

51:24SPEAKERLike like Java Java minecraft is old-school like Wild West Minecraft and then bedrock is minecraft as a service, right?

51:31SPEAKERPretty much. I think that's fair

51:33SPEAKERSo they also added a physical physically based renderer

51:37SPEAKERSo I'm trying to think a good example you remember like Yoshi's crafted world where?

51:42SPEAKERthe world looks like it's made of cloth and everything's bouncy and that's all part of the material system and like

51:47SPEAKERYeah, so they added that stuff

51:50SPEAKERThey're doing path-based rate path traced ray tracing and it's lovely. It is absolutely stunning. Looks good. We were we

51:58SPEAKERIn the stream I set up

52:01SPEAKERI set a bunch of stuff and we noodle with a bunch of stuff and we explored they made I think six or eight worlds that

52:06SPEAKERThey paid creators to make they also built some showcase worlds where that you can kind of see what's

52:12SPEAKERGoing on in the like what what they're how the new texture components work and all that stuff

52:19SPEAKERBut we loaded up one of the worlds and started trying to make a camera obscura like we were doing like tricks

52:24SPEAKERHoly shit, and it works it works. Oh, man

52:28SPEAKERIt's hard to get enough light in but like you can do that. Then somebody first moment. I've ever wanted an artist card

52:34SPEAKERSo then somebody suggested that we do

52:37SPEAKERWe try to do the two slit experiment. Oh, wow, and I set that up. It took a little while and it didn't work

52:44SPEAKERAll right, it's too we get to we get two lines instead of four. Okay, and

52:48SPEAKERSomebody in chat was like right it's because they're simulating rays not waves. Oh, right. There's no waves when you're doing ray tracing

52:54SPEAKERIt's just straight lines. That's incredible. So, of course the two slit experiment doesn't work and fucking photons

53:00SPEAKERYeah, just photons man. But yeah, it was it was it's really like if you have an RTS card, you should definitely

53:07SPEAKERGo to the Windows Insider hub sign up for the minecraft bedrock RTX beta download it

53:13SPEAKERIt's got a lot of limitations you you can there are ways that you can build your own worlds using the new textures

53:18SPEAKERBut there's a process and you have to go to any video site that I'll hopefully remember to link in the show notes

53:24SPEAKERyou you

53:27SPEAKERCan't play on realms because it's a different version

53:30SPEAKERIt's a fork of the of the main minecraft and any worlds that you open in the RTX beta will not be able to be opened

53:37SPEAKERin

53:38SPEAKERnormal bedrock minecraft

53:40SPEAKERYou also can't have normal bedrock minecraft and the RTX beta on your system at the same time

53:45SPEAKERSo like I'm having to switch back and forth which is a little bit of a pain in the ass

53:48SPEAKERBut sure, not that big a deal. How's your performance?

53:51SPEAKERIs it wrong? I was so I was running 1080p because I was streaming and it was like

53:58SPEAKERSolid 60, okay much everywhere

54:01SPEAKERIt also they also do the good thing where you can press the semi-colon key and it switches back and forth between RTX and not

54:06SPEAKERRTX. Oh, wow, so you can see like the non luminance non shiny textures, which is really cool

54:11SPEAKERI am absolutely gonna go watch that stream. I want to see that. Yeah, the water stuff is really really cool

54:16SPEAKERIt is absolutely like they do refraction on the water in a way that like when you're above the surface of the water

54:22SPEAKERYou can see things they look bigger and as soon as you dip in just like in real water

54:27SPEAKERIt looks like the right size again. Oh, that's so great

54:30SPEAKERIt's also Brad when you're underneath the water if the lights right above

54:34SPEAKERThen it reflects the floor of the of the ocean

54:38SPEAKERRather than letting you see straight through to the sky like you get some transmissiveness and it's it is is is really well done

54:45SPEAKERIt is so exciting that those consoles have got you know

54:49SPEAKERCodified codified ray tracing hardware in them and once all games are capable of being designed around this like that's it's gonna be so great

54:57SPEAKERI mean we talked about this what this is like the third episode we did so it's half a year ago

55:01SPEAKERIt's been a while and back then I was still a little gun-shy on how long it was gonna take to roll this stuff out

55:07SPEAKERsince then we've seen control and this and

55:11SPEAKERLike I'm I'm really really excited about what's gonna happen with the next consoles

55:15SPEAKERbut yeah ray tracing I was gonna be I was I think I was a poor ambassador for this stuff because of the first like

55:21SPEAKERYear or something that the RTX stuff was out people were just like, ah, whatever. It's a little bit shinier

55:25SPEAKERLike who cares and I was just like no, you don't understand it's gonna be so awesome. It's just gonna take a while

55:29SPEAKERBut it's taking a lot less time than like if you look at like the dx8 transition to a programmable pipeline

55:35SPEAKERIt's taking way less time than that totally which is awesome. Totally. So yeah, so yeah, it seems neat

55:41SPEAKERLet's try it if you have an RTX card. Yeah

55:44SPEAKEROkay, I got one more. All right

55:47SPEAKEROver the last like three months the lights in my kitchen have been gradually going out one at a time

55:52SPEAKEROh like out out not redeeming

55:54SPEAKERWe're first dimming then kind of blinking on and off and then just stopped working start those LEDs by any chance

56:02SPEAKERIt's funny. You mentioned that Brad their first gen Cree floodlight bulbs are in sealing applications canister lights. Yeah

56:10SPEAKERThey were hooked up to a GE a first gen GE z-wave smart switch

56:16SPEAKERThat was the only for a long time the only switch on the market that worked with two wire lighting installs

56:22SPEAKERWhich is what my house has because we build in the 50s. So I

56:26SPEAKERWas like shit. I think this switch has finally died. It's like 10 years old. It's time to pop it. So I popped it out

56:30SPEAKERI ordered

56:32SPEAKERLutron has started making

56:34SPEAKERCasita I think it's how it's pronounced

56:37SPEAKERlight dimmers and switches

56:39SPEAKERThat are compatible with two wire installations, which just to be clear like two wire installations

56:43SPEAKERThis is everything built before the 90s pretty much. Is that I?

56:47SPEAKERWe're almost afraid to say this but is that power and ground so it's yes. Oh, so when you have a two wire situation

56:54SPEAKERit is like a loop between there's power coming in one side and

56:58SPEAKERthen that wire goes straight to the light and another wire comes straight back and goes back to the switch and

57:04SPEAKERWe're one of them does I guess both of them don't but when you flip the switch it closes that loop and when the switch

57:10SPEAKERIs closed that loop just doesn't exist. It's the standard old school wiring is what you're saying, right? Yeah

57:15SPEAKEROkay, like I know it's not my forte

57:17SPEAKERWell, the problem with smart switches is they need to have a little bit of power all the time and if they're not set up

57:22SPEAKERright

57:23SPEAKERThen then that doesn't work. Oh, yeah, cuz they need they need a connection active to receive commands, right?

57:29SPEAKERright and to be able to turn on so

57:32SPEAKERI thought that that switch would had died because it's been janky for a while and

57:36SPEAKERI ordered one of these Lutron's also because I wanted one of the Lutron's because they look really cool and

57:40SPEAKERI popped it in and didn't fix the problem. So I was like shit. Maybe the bulbs are dead

57:43SPEAKERI can't believe these bulbs are dead there. Maybe they're probably eight years old

57:47SPEAKERthey're on a lot because they're the kitchen lights and we use those those lights all the time and

57:52SPEAKERI got new lights in the other day and put them in and it's like the surface of the Sun

57:58SPEAKERlike

57:59SPEAKERHoly shit. Is that a good thing? Yeah, it's good

58:03SPEAKERThe I didn't I thought I thought I was just getting old and my eyes were getting worse and I was like having less light

58:09SPEAKERSensitivity but no, it's just half the bulbs in our house are ten years old and are starting to get dim

58:14SPEAKERThat was that was the insidious thing. I realized when we did that LED lighting episode was back. Yeah holidays

58:19SPEAKERI think once yeah, like once I did that that AB comparison of those Christmas lights that I had bought like yep

58:25SPEAKERIt's it's subtle and gradual enough that you're not gonna consciously notice like oh these lights are getting dimmer

58:30SPEAKERWhen is that? You know what? I mean? Like I think we talked about it's like you're not gonna know

58:34SPEAKERHey, it's time to replace these lights because they're still putting out light, you know, it's just it's gonna

58:38SPEAKERYour your lights are gas lighting you into thinking that you're either your eyes are going that happened to me

58:45SPEAKERIt can happen to you

58:47SPEAKERSo yeah. Anyway, I've replaced all of them. They're good

58:51SPEAKERthe one thing about those casitas if you go with those switches is they do have a bulb compatibility list and they

58:57SPEAKERThey disclaim the warranty on the switch if you don't use compatible bulbs. Okay, the the bulb compatibility list was enormous

59:05SPEAKERAnd I was able to find bulbs that I liked that were in the right, you know price range and all that stuff. So

59:11SPEAKERI mean, I guess ten years nine years on light bulbs isn't too bad eight years on light bulbs, whatever that's pretty good

59:18SPEAKERThose are also the first gen LED Cree floods. Like that was the very first one that they

59:26SPEAKERYeah, we've had pretty good luck with crease. I

59:29SPEAKERMost part I I find that they're pretty safe. Yeah, like like the G's and some of the other bigger

59:35SPEAKERLike more traditional light bulb brands. I've had to send some back because they were like they just didn't they didn't look right, right?

59:42SPEAKERBut the crease I know we're gonna look like a light bulb

59:44SPEAKERYeah

59:44SPEAKERThey were good and eight nine years is getting into that territory of like you actually saved you probably save plenty of money on electricity

59:51SPEAKERright, I

59:52SPEAKERwould hope so there's so the bulbs that I got our

59:55SPEAKERHundred watt equivalents that draw 16 watts. I think yeah, which is you know a fifth basically

1:00:03SPEAKERTime. Yeah, that's a long time. Yeah

1:00:05SPEAKERYeah, so the joys of small ownership

1:00:08SPEAKERBut but I mean props to the Lutron folks because that thing is that that thing is really cool

1:00:12SPEAKERYeah, and the fact that it works on all the switches means that I have a lot more options now

1:00:17SPEAKERThat's cool. I

1:00:19SPEAKERThink that's as good a place as any to wrap it up Brad. We've got a lot

1:00:21SPEAKERI mean we there there are multiple projects we didn't even get to on this list. So we've got

1:00:26SPEAKERAnother one in the future. Yeah, we're still just kind of sitting here in quarantine looking for things to tinker with

1:00:32SPEAKERI've got a laser project. I'm working on a robot that we'll talk about in the I think I'm gonna

1:00:37SPEAKERI think I'm gonna ask for some help from

1:00:40SPEAKERfolks in discord because I don't I'm I

1:00:42SPEAKERDon't want to buy 15 different motors to figure out what I need to do the thing that I need to do and I think there's

1:00:47SPEAKERPeople in there with that expertise. So don't give that robot self-awareness

1:00:51SPEAKERNo, no, no, never never just learn from the terminator

1:00:55SPEAKERPlease look first

1:00:57SPEAKERWe have to 3d print the guns and then we give the robots the guns

1:01:01SPEAKERAnd then we give them self-awareness for personal defense

1:01:04SPEAKERWell, just put a second amendment Brad put an algorithm that they can never turn the guns on human beings

1:01:08SPEAKERSo that the work perfectly yeah, that's yeah, those are foolproof right defend all life. Yeah, that's that's the way it's right

1:01:15SPEAKERServe the public trust as always thanks to our producer everybody who supports the patreon

1:01:21SPEAKEREspecially our executive producers David Allen and Andrew cotton. Thank you guys so much. Thank you ever. Thank you everybody and

1:01:26SPEAKEReverybody who is backing the patreon it is

1:01:29SPEAKERwonderful to see

1:01:32SPEAKERFascinating conversations every single day in the discord. Yeah, it's it's a fun place to hide

1:01:37SPEAKERI am just like not and I'm not trying to like goad people into supporting us

1:01:40SPEAKERI actually genuinely just think it's a super fun place to watch people talk tech

1:01:45SPEAKERWell, I think I think we were like and other stuff too

1:01:48SPEAKERLike we have a the food channel is booming where people are posting recipes and stuff. They're making

1:01:52SPEAKERWe have a lot of stuff going on in the maker

1:01:56SPEAKERLike the maker channel was about robots this week, which was awesome. I think we might make a robot channel

1:02:01SPEAKERand then

1:02:03SPEAKERthe

1:02:04SPEAKERThere's been some impromptu fruit swapping going on in video games. I guess Animal Crossing related

1:02:10SPEAKERAll sorts of other good stuffs you dropped something in there that we hadn't even discussed beforehand

1:02:15SPEAKERSo it was a surprise to me and I don't know if I might be playing with fire by mentioning it out loud

1:02:20SPEAKERBut you it was an idea for a supporter benefit. Oh

1:02:24SPEAKERBut I'm incredibly excited about I don't know if we should talk about it because it doesn't exist yet

1:02:29SPEAKERYou can like if you said you said the magic letters

1:02:32SPEAKERGo ahead and say it and then if people respond really positively that will be an impetus to get it going BBS

1:02:39SPEAKERboobs and I don't know what form that would I mean

1:02:42SPEAKERObviously that would be an over the internet form at this point and not an over telephone lines form

1:02:46SPEAKERAlthough if you want, yeah, I think we I think it would be something you SSH or telnet into or whatever

1:02:51SPEAKERGive you a reason to set up for phone lines in here then maybe we can look

1:02:57SPEAKERYou need a PBX software

1:02:58SPEAKERyou can run that in a free NAS in a in a in a disk in a container on your jail on your free NAS and

1:03:05SPEAKERknow that I think the thing we need is like I

1:03:09SPEAKERThink a BBS to run like some old BBS games and stuff on would be really weird

1:03:13SPEAKERPeople were talking about trade wars on there, which I was always intimidated by back in the day

1:03:16SPEAKERIt seemed really complicated to my trade wars like did like dope wars, but not would not with drugs. Maybe I'm inflating how

1:03:24SPEAKERLike the complexity of it

1:03:25SPEAKERBut in my 14 year old mind

1:03:27SPEAKERIt was like a very hardcore strategy game that like you had to check in on every day and that kind of thing

1:03:32SPEAKERSo I don't know but like I played a lot of legend of the red dragon and some of the other door games on look

1:03:36SPEAKERBBS is like that

1:03:38SPEAKERLook if you want to do that

1:03:39SPEAKERWe can just start a Neptune's pride game and do it for disco for subs

1:03:42SPEAKERPatreon members, and then we'll all hate each other at the end of a week put a permanent end to this podcast

1:03:48SPEAKERI can't imagine what modern BBS technology looks like if that even exists if people have like

1:03:53SPEAKERadded on to and create a new stuff over time, but I also just like the idea of making a time capsule like

1:03:59SPEAKER1993 BBS as well. So we yeah, we get your doom shareware there

1:04:03SPEAKERYeah, so we should we absolutely have to go on ftp.com and download the doom shareware. I put it on our BBS

1:04:10SPEAKERI am into this idea and if people like it, let us know either in the discord or send us Twitter messages at sweatpants tech and

1:04:18SPEAKERAnd we'll I'll see we'll see if we can make it happen. Yeah, it sounds really really goofy

1:04:24SPEAKERBut yeah, thanks for listening everybody. And yeah, thank you Brad. Yeah. Hope you're hope you're say wash your hands

1:04:29SPEAKERYes, if be well everyone

1:04:31SPEAKERYeah, everybody take care of yourself and we will see you all next week on another sweatpants neck pod

1:04:37SPEAKERNope, that's not the name of the show. It is now

1:04:40SPEAKERfuck
