00:00SPEAKERWelcome to Episode 1 of Brad and Will Make a Tech Pod, Period.
00:04SPEAKERWe're making a tech pod?
00:05SPEAKERWe're making a tech pod, Brad.
00:06SPEAKERI'm going to emerge from my tech pod fully formed.
00:09SPEAKERLook, if I can blast out of a pod one time in my life, I'll consider it fulfilled.
00:30SPEAKERI'm Will.
00:46SPEAKERI'm Brad.
00:48SPEAKERHello.
00:49SPEAKERWe're making a podcast.
00:50SPEAKERI know, we did an episode that you haven't heard because we didn't tell anybody about
00:53SPEAKERit.
00:54SPEAKERHave they not heard that one?
00:55SPEAKERWell, it's on the feed.
00:56SPEAKEROh.
00:57SPEAKERAnd it's on iTunes.
00:58SPEAKERBut I didn't tweet about it, I don't think.
00:59SPEAKERI'm sorry I did.
01:00SPEAKERWho knows?
01:01SPEAKERSomebody's going to work backwards.
01:02SPEAKERDiscover all of our dark secrets.
01:03SPEAKERThey can find out the origin story.
01:04SPEAKERBut this week, it's a big news week.
01:06SPEAKERYeah.
01:07SPEAKERAs I learned about 12 hours ago?
01:09SPEAKERYeah, you're really dialed into the tech news scene, I can tell.
01:11SPEAKERThis one really snuck up on me.
01:13SPEAKERWell, I'll let you say what it is and then I will tell you how they've all kind of run
01:16SPEAKERtogether for me at this point.
01:18SPEAKERWell, first we should probably say what the show is.
01:20SPEAKERIt's about tech.
01:21SPEAKERThere you go.
01:22SPEAKERYeah, it's a tech podcast with two middle-aged white guys.
01:25SPEAKERAnd we're going to cover--
01:26SPEAKERRadical innovations in the podcast space.
01:28SPEAKERThere is a radical innovation.
01:31SPEAKERInstead of being about every topic of the week, we're just picking one.
01:34SPEAKERThat's about a topic.
01:35SPEAKEROne topic.
01:36SPEAKEROkay.
01:37SPEAKERThis week's topic?
01:38SPEAKERNew iPhone launch.
01:39SPEAKEROh.
01:40SPEAKEROkay.
01:41SPEAKERApple keynote Tuesday.
01:42SPEAKERGet down to the iPhone.
01:43SPEAKERMaybe there's a little aside about, I think, what I assume we want to do with this podcast.
01:47SPEAKERI mean, this week we have a ton of just newsy stuff to cover.
01:51SPEAKERUsually.
01:52SPEAKERNormally, I think we would kind of deep dive into stuff a little more.
01:54SPEAKERYeah, I think that's fair.
01:56SPEAKERThis is just a normalized tech podcast.
01:58SPEAKERRight.
01:59SPEAKERRight.
02:00SPEAKERWe're just kind of...
02:01SPEAKERBecause there's just a lot to get through.
02:02SPEAKERMaybe this should be episode zero.
02:03SPEAKERSo, yeah.
02:04SPEAKERIt snuck up on me because I don't think about iPhone events anymore because what is there
02:07SPEAKERto think about?
02:08SPEAKERI'm sorry.
02:09SPEAKERThat's a very negative way to start this.
02:10SPEAKERNo, but I mean, this is the point where the devices are kind of iterative and there's
02:16SPEAKERnot a lot that's new.
02:17SPEAKERI have an iPhone 10 that's now two years old.
02:21SPEAKEREven that, there were some kind of significant upgrades, but I feel like we hit the plateau
02:25SPEAKEReven before that.
02:26SPEAKERI'm probably okay.
02:27SPEAKERYeah.
02:28SPEAKERWell, the significant upgrade there was, hey, there's no buttons on the face and it's edge
02:31SPEAKERto edge.
02:32SPEAKERWhich I like.
02:33SPEAKERIs that really an upgrade?
02:34SPEAKERIs it really?
02:35SPEAKERI love the notch.
02:36SPEAKERI know you're a notch hater.
02:37SPEAKERMan, I hate the notch.
02:38SPEAKERYou just have to learn to live with the notch, man.
02:39SPEAKERI explicitly bought an iPhone 8 after the 10 was out because that's how much I hate
02:42SPEAKERthe notch.
02:43SPEAKERWow.
02:44SPEAKERYou know what I want?
02:45SPEAKERA rectangular screen with square corners.
02:47SPEAKERSharp, right angles.
02:48SPEAKERSomething pointy.
02:49SPEAKERRight angles.
02:50SPEAKERYou need a Windows phone.
02:51SPEAKERMaybe.
02:52SPEAKERI used a Windows phone.
02:53SPEAKERI did for a while.
02:54SPEAKERIt was a fine phone.
02:55SPEAKERIt was okay.
02:56SPEAKEROkay.
02:57SPEAKERSo Apple announced three new iPhones.
02:58SPEAKERYeah.
02:59SPEAKERA new human cost iPad.
03:03SPEAKERStarts at like 350, 380 bucks, something like that.
03:07SPEAKERNew services.
03:08SPEAKERYep.
03:09SPEAKERApple Watch Series 5.
03:10SPEAKERRight.
03:11SPEAKERWe're going to talk about it all.
03:12SPEAKERYes.
03:13SPEAKERIn 45-ish minutes.
03:14SPEAKEROkay.
03:15SPEAKERStarting now.
03:16SPEAKEROkay.
03:17SPEAKERSo iPhone 11.
03:18SPEAKERThis is the entry level iPhone.
03:19SPEAKERThey make you wait to get all the way to the end with all the bullshit.
03:21SPEAKERIt starts at 700 bucks.
03:23SPEAKERWhich is, I believe, cheaper.
03:24SPEAKERIt's like 50 bucks cheaper.
03:25SPEAKERIt's cheaper than the iPhone XR, which was the previous entry level iPhone.
03:28SPEAKERSeems like the big news this year is that they just kind of renamed the product line.
03:32SPEAKERThey re-centered the product line.
03:34SPEAKERIt's the same three models.
03:36SPEAKERThey've just moved where the baseline is.
03:38SPEAKERAnd they made them all iPhone 11s now.
03:40SPEAKERSo this is iPhone 11, 11, not Xi, because that would be really dumb.
03:47SPEAKERIt is an A13 processor.
03:50SPEAKERIt has the LCD-ish screen from the last generation, it seems like.
03:54SPEAKERWe're talking about the flat basic 11.
03:56SPEAKERThis is the flat basic 11.
03:57SPEAKERIt seems like a pretty good phone.
03:59SPEAKERThey're adding dual cameras is the big upgrade if you were an iPhone XR person previously.
04:04SPEAKERWhich means that you get a wide angle camera and a normal focal length camera, and it can
04:10SPEAKERuse them both simultaneously, which is kind of new.
04:12SPEAKERI mean, you could kind of, it kind of did that before, but the big shift seems to be
04:16SPEAKERthat with all three of these new phones, previously when you were shooting video on the iPhone
04:21SPEAKERX, you had to choose which camera you wanted before you started recording the video.
04:25SPEAKEROh, is that not still the case?
04:26SPEAKERSeems like that might not be the case anymore.
04:28SPEAKERSome of the stuff I read, like there is a camera view where it shows you kind of both
04:31SPEAKERviews at the same time, and you, I think you can still manually pick which one you want
04:35SPEAKERto shoot.
04:36SPEAKERThat is an app, and that is rad.
04:37SPEAKERSo that, that's on the higher end phones.
04:39SPEAKERI don't know if it's on the, on the 11, but with the Pros, you can shoot from two cameras
04:44SPEAKERat once.
04:45SPEAKERSo you can shoot a wide and a close up at the same time on the same device.
04:49SPEAKEROr I think this was just letting you select, like, here's what both cameras can see.
04:53SPEAKERYou can pick which one to shoot.
04:54SPEAKERSo that, so that's something that I think Bionic has always done, Bionic is the name
04:57SPEAKERof the app.
04:58SPEAKERIt's like a, it's like a here, it's like for filmmakers to choose which lens they want
05:01SPEAKERto use to choose a scene when they're framing it.
05:04SPEAKERThe thing that I blew me away on that was that you can actually shoot the selfie camera,
05:09SPEAKERthe forward facing camera and the, the, the other person camera.
05:13SPEAKERSo like you could record an interview.
05:15SPEAKERWe could record, we could record a podcast with just a phone stacked up between us.
05:19SPEAKERThat's too much.
05:20SPEAKERNo, we don't.
05:21SPEAKERNobody should do video podcasts.
05:22SPEAKERI kind of, I just caught this video presentation over somebody's shoulder, but did I see they
05:24SPEAKERwere demoing, like shooting a musical performance with an iPhone?
05:28SPEAKERThey did that.
05:29SPEAKERLike are they basically just turning this thing into like a pocket size production studio?
05:32SPEAKERIs that where they're, well, I mean, it's called a Pro, so.
05:34SPEAKERSo that was with the Pro.
05:35SPEAKERIt needs to be professional, I guess.
05:37SPEAKERUm, yeah, I mean, look, they've always done the, like, this is, this is the same thing
05:40SPEAKERthat they always do.
05:42SPEAKERThey give the iPhone to a bunch of really talented professional photographers and give
05:45SPEAKERthem $10,000 or what, you know, whatever amount of money and say, go out in the world and
05:49SPEAKERtake some awesome photographs.
05:50SPEAKERAnd then they come back and they take awesome photographs.
05:53SPEAKERIf you give those same cameras, like a janky 1990s style, like disposable windup camera
05:59SPEAKERwith the plastic lens and all the badness, send them out in the world, give them a budget
06:03SPEAKERto go someplace awesome.
06:04SPEAKERThey're going to take awesome photos, pretty good photo.
06:06SPEAKERYeah.
06:07SPEAKERIt's like if you, the real test is to give it to my six year old and be like, Hey, can
06:10SPEAKERthis, can this make the six year old photos look good?
06:12SPEAKERAnd yeah, it's up and down.
06:15SPEAKERUm, same thing with the video.
06:16SPEAKERLike they had the iPhone mounted on a dolly and they were trucking, they were, you know,
06:20SPEAKERthey were, they were, um, uh, trucking in and out doing all sorts of like really beautiful
06:25SPEAKERmovements.
06:26SPEAKERAnd it looked great.
06:27SPEAKERThe video looked terrific.
06:28SPEAKERI just, I guess I'm kind of surprised that the cameras are still the point of innovation
06:32SPEAKERwith these things.
06:33SPEAKERIt turns out the cameras are why people upgrade the phone.
06:36SPEAKERLike, like I'm at this point, we've seen enough people like leading with cameras first when
06:42SPEAKERthey introduce new hardware, both on the Android and iOS side, there is substantial market
06:47SPEAKERdata.
06:48SPEAKERI've not seen it.
06:49SPEAKERThere's substantial market data that says the only reason people ever buy new phones
06:52SPEAKERis because of the camera.
06:53SPEAKERAlso, it seems like there was just a way higher ceiling for things to improve there.
06:56SPEAKERRight.
06:57SPEAKERLike, I mean, cause like software performance is fine and has been for what three, four
07:01SPEAKERyears at least like the phones are fast.
07:03SPEAKERSo like a faster CPU doesn't really move the needle for anybody at this point, right?
07:07SPEAKERI think that's fair.
07:08SPEAKERLike I think that's exactly, you know, like kind of flash in the pan stuff like 3d touch
07:11SPEAKERdoesn't matter to anybody.
07:12SPEAKERLike, I guess the camera is really the only thing that most people see like a tangible
07:16SPEAKERbenefit from.
07:17SPEAKERRight.
07:18SPEAKERI mean, once the screen is AR maybe a little bit, but even that is a camera.
07:20SPEAKERWell, they didn't talk about AR today at all, which is really interesting because that to
07:22SPEAKERme says, Oh, that's right.
07:23SPEAKERCause it was a big focus last time, right?
07:26SPEAKERMaybe all of their AR stuff is going into a different device, not the phone right now.
07:30SPEAKERHuh?
07:31SPEAKERSo they, they, uh, it seems like the cameras, the cameras lenses are bigger, like there's
07:36SPEAKERmore glass, which will have a definitive improvement on the, on the image quality where the camera
07:41SPEAKERhump is a site like, look, they're machining that back glass now, Brad, it's uh, I assume
07:47SPEAKERthat that stuff is explodes.
07:49SPEAKERLike, I can't even imagine machining glass seems really scary.
07:52SPEAKERUm, but yeah, so the, it's still the same basic design as the iPhone 10, all of these
07:57SPEAKERphones are, uh, glass back the, actually the 10 might have a stainless back.
08:01SPEAKERI, it looks like, no, no, it's machine glass as well.
08:04SPEAKERI think I saw that it's, um, God, what was the term they used?
08:08SPEAKERIt's basically not polished glass anymore.
08:10SPEAKERThere's like a matte glass and that's somehow more durable.
08:13SPEAKERUm, well, I mean, it'll less likely to slide out of your hands.
08:16SPEAKERI don't know if you've held an iPhone 10 without a case on.
08:18SPEAKERYeah, I've got this eight that's got the same back on it.
08:21SPEAKERDoes it have the glass back or no, it has an aluminum back.
08:23SPEAKERDoesn't it?
08:24SPEAKERNo, it's got the glass.
08:25SPEAKEROh yeah.
08:26SPEAKERThe eight did.
08:27SPEAKERYeah.
08:28SPEAKERSo it's the stainless steel frame with the aluminum back.
08:29SPEAKERThe 11 is aluminum is an aluminum band.
08:31SPEAKERThe 11 pro is a stainless band around the edge.
08:35SPEAKERUm, so it's shinier.
08:36SPEAKEROh sure.
08:37SPEAKERShinier metal.
08:38SPEAKERRight.
08:39SPEAKERUm, it starts at 64 gigs for the 11 stock.
08:42SPEAKERThey're still doing that thing.
08:44SPEAKERI think, I think that's the right spot.
08:46SPEAKERLike 64 gigs seems like, look, well, it's more than flash memory is so cheap that they
08:50SPEAKERcould easily start at 128.
08:53SPEAKERSo the bummer is they're not, there's no 128 gig model anymore.
08:56SPEAKERThey've always done that.
08:57SPEAKERThey've always skipped a notch.
08:58SPEAKERWell, they didn't always, but in recent memory.
09:00SPEAKERYes.
09:01SPEAKERFor a very long time.
09:02SPEAKERSo it's 64 gigs, which is a decent base model.
09:03SPEAKERI think.
09:04SPEAKERI think even if you're shooting 4k video, if you're using like a cloud service for your
09:07SPEAKERbackup of your photos and video, that's not going to matter.
09:10SPEAKERYou're like, you're not going to fill that thing up.
09:11SPEAKERI can take a 64 gig iPad and load up all the movies and stuff I wanted and go on an airplane.
09:17SPEAKERRight.
09:18SPEAKERIt's no big deal.
09:19SPEAKERIt jumps from there to 256, uh, and from there to 512 and it's a $150 bump from $600 for
09:26SPEAKERthe 64 gig to 750 for the 256 gig, which seems substantial.
09:31SPEAKERYeah.
09:32SPEAKERUm, so now the, that's, that's kind of it.
09:35SPEAKERLike there's not a ton going on there.
09:36SPEAKERYeah.
09:37SPEAKERIt's not, I mean, I don't know what I was hoping for.
09:39SPEAKERLike I said, I'd barely pay attention to these events now because they're all the same and
09:43SPEAKERhave been for like, I guess, OLED screens a couple of years ago were a big deal, but
09:48SPEAKERlike before that, when was the last time an iPhone was super exciting?
09:51SPEAKERWell, so these, I don't think that this is the OLED screen.
09:54SPEAKERI need to look that up and see, but um, in the new ones, in the 11 pros, the 11 pro is
09:58SPEAKERdefinitely on the screen.
10:00SPEAKERThe 11 is probably an LCD.
10:01SPEAKERSo, I mean, that's like kind of the big story to me is that they've just changed which one
10:05SPEAKERis the entry level phone versus which one is the budget phone, which versus which one
10:09SPEAKERis, you know what I mean?
10:10SPEAKERWell, they just changed the name.
10:11SPEAKERRight.
10:12SPEAKERBecause last time it was, last time it was 10 and 10S.
10:14SPEAKERNo, I'm sorry.
10:15SPEAKERLast time it was 10S.
10:16SPEAKERI'm sorry.
10:17SPEAKERLast time it was 10S and 10S max.
10:18SPEAKERAnd then 10R.
10:19SPEAKERAnd then the 10R came out.
10:20SPEAKERYeah.
10:21SPEAKERBut like, what does that mean to the average person when they hear 10R?
10:23SPEAKERLike it's meaningless, right?
10:24SPEAKERWell, so that, that's exactly it.
10:25SPEAKERIt was the budget, it was the budget model, but they didn't actually explain that in the
10:28SPEAKERname.
10:29SPEAKERWell, so now the entry level phone has the same name as the high-end phone.
10:31SPEAKERThat's what I mean.
10:32SPEAKERThat's what I mean.
10:33SPEAKERLike just the baseline phone is the one with the plain name.
10:34SPEAKERThey should have just called this one the iPhone and started with the one again.
10:38SPEAKERSure.
10:39SPEAKERThat's a joke.
10:40SPEAKERI'm going to try to resist saying this all the time, but Jobs never would have allowed
10:42SPEAKERthis.
10:43SPEAKERI, I mean, on one hand, as somebody who likes to act like an egalitarian on occasion, I
10:51SPEAKERfeel like it's good that they're selling products that aren't like when they went to a thousand
10:54SPEAKERdollar base price for the, for the, for the good.
10:56SPEAKEROh, I just mean, he never would have allowed this messy naming convention that well, this,
11:00SPEAKERthey tightened it up with this.
11:01SPEAKEROh, no, it's better now.
11:02SPEAKERYeah.
11:03SPEAKERI'm just saying you never would have allowed it to be that messy in the first place.
11:05SPEAKERI feel like that's probably true.
11:06SPEAKERYeah.
11:07SPEAKERLike there's an inelegance to, I think, I feel like there's an inelegance to a lot of
11:09SPEAKERwhat Apple does these days that wasn't there before.
11:12SPEAKERIt's it's, it's, I mean, they're also doing a ton more products.
11:15SPEAKERLike it's messy because there's like, yeah, if you think about like iPhone four launch,
11:20SPEAKERit was one, one device in one color, you can get any color you wanted as long as it was
11:24SPEAKERblack.
11:25SPEAKERSure.
11:26SPEAKERI think they rolled out white with the five and then that doubled the number of skews
11:30SPEAKERthey had.
11:31SPEAKERAnd then like the, the plus came along at some point, I just, yeah, they did the big
11:34SPEAKERboy.
11:35SPEAKERLike I also feel like max is a weirdly, uh, max is an unfortunate name.
11:38SPEAKERYeah.
11:39SPEAKERI mean, shout out to our friends named max, but, um, I feel like, uh, I feel like the
11:45SPEAKERmax max as a, Hey, this is the big boy is weird.
11:49SPEAKERI feel like plus was pretty good.
11:50SPEAKERIt feels kind of discordant to me with the image they try to project of being like a,
11:55SPEAKERI don't know, a Rolex or a Mercedes, like a premium goods company.
12:00SPEAKERYou know what I mean?
12:01SPEAKERI mean like a, like a high class lifestyle kind of brand kind of like to call a thing
12:05SPEAKERlike the max is just, I mean, I just caught, but I had a big one of the, one of the big
12:10SPEAKERones.
12:11SPEAKERI just called it the Duke.
12:12SPEAKERThat was, that was my name for the phone.
12:13SPEAKERWell, that's your, that's your iPhone head Canon.
12:15SPEAKERThat's yeah.
12:16SPEAKERYeah.
12:17SPEAKERI feel like, um, I don't know.
12:18SPEAKERLike something like that makes me think of like jumbo laundry detergent or something.
12:21SPEAKERYeah.
12:22SPEAKERIt does.
12:23SPEAKERIt does have like a Mr. Sparkle kind of shine into it.
12:25SPEAKERYeah.
12:26SPEAKERSo the thing about it is at least, you know, that that's the big one, like plus and pro
12:30SPEAKERboth indicate that it could just be better.
12:32SPEAKERYeah.
12:33SPEAKERWhereas max max is undeniably large.
12:35SPEAKERThat's fair.
12:36SPEAKERUm, I, I liked it.
12:38SPEAKERThey're doing colors again and they're doing the anodized aluminum colors.
12:41SPEAKERSo there's a purple, white, yellow, green, red and black.
12:45SPEAKERWow.
12:46SPEAKERAnd it's the purple looks good.
12:47SPEAKERThe green always looks good.
12:48SPEAKERThe green, the green on the pro is like a dark green.
12:51SPEAKERIt looks almost black.
12:52SPEAKERI want to see that one in person.
12:54SPEAKERI don't think I'm buying any of these phones for the record.
12:56SPEAKERI think I'm probably good.
12:57SPEAKERI think I'm good.
12:58SPEAKERAlso.
12:59SPEAKERUm, why, what's the point?
13:00SPEAKERUh, they, they made a point to talk about spatial audio using fat sound fields for watching
13:04SPEAKERmovies without headphones on.
13:07SPEAKERUm, which I would say, I have to say that like the sound on the iPhone 10 and the iPad
13:11SPEAKERpro 12 inch, the square edge one is astounding, like it's, it's super duper good.
13:18SPEAKERUh, so if they can get some of that in there, I guess that's fine.
13:21SPEAKERI feel like, um, adding the wider, wider, wider camera.
13:26SPEAKERSo on the iPhone 10 they did a telephoto camera and a wider angle camera.
13:30SPEAKERSo you had like a way to do closeups and way to do closer ones, uh, wider shots.
13:34SPEAKERI'm kind of stoked that they're switching for a wide cause I feel like I use wides.
13:38SPEAKERLike the, the experience with shooting a telephoto on an iPhone is always bad and I feel like
13:43SPEAKERthe experience with shooting wide angle on like a pixel or something like that has been
13:46SPEAKERreally nice in that like if you want to do a selfie with five people and you hold the
13:49SPEAKERphone out like this and you can get all five people in the shop without having to use a
13:52SPEAKERtripod or recruit some stranger to shoot the picture, stuff like that.
13:56SPEAKERI think, I think that's a good change or I, other than that, I'm like, eh, very iterative.
14:03SPEAKERYeah, very much so.
14:05SPEAKERAnd it's, it was also telling me that they're keeping the iPhone eight around.
14:08SPEAKERSo the iPhone eight is still going to be around.
14:10SPEAKERIt's at a much lower price point for people, presumably who want the button.
14:15SPEAKERI have to assume maybe there's some like people who can't have cameras on their phones or
14:18SPEAKERsomething like that still have to have the cameras disabled.
14:21SPEAKERSo face ID doesn't work for them.
14:23SPEAKERUm, or maybe, maybe they just need a phone for the olds who don't want, um, don't want
14:29SPEAKERto look at the camera.
14:30SPEAKERI bought an iPhone eight.
14:31SPEAKERUm, there were some rumors, a wild act that they had found a way to, uh, integrate the
14:37SPEAKERtouch sensor under the screen.
14:39SPEAKERSo there's patents about that from a bunch of different places that the touch ID ultimately
14:43SPEAKERwill come back once they can figure that out, maybe, I mean, presumably, so the way it works
14:47SPEAKERis that there's a sensor that lives just underneath the surface of the screen and it picks up
14:51SPEAKERthe capacity.
14:52SPEAKERIt picks up enough capacitance to tell the darks, the world, all that stuff, find enough
14:57SPEAKERresolution.
14:58SPEAKERI assume presumably they're either not happy with it yet, or they think that there's more
15:03SPEAKERlegs on the face ID.
15:05SPEAKERUm, and, and having the, the ability to do the depth camera stuff seems good.
15:10SPEAKEROh, they did mention that they, that now they're doing stereo with the, with the multiple cameras
15:15SPEAKERon the iPhone 11, which wasn't, I feel like the iPhone XR maybe had that, but the iPhone
15:20SPEAKEReight is a single camera.
15:22SPEAKERSo you can do portrait mode photos of things that it doesn't recognize as a face.
15:26SPEAKERSo um, uh, for example, Google and Apple have been doing portrait mode on human faces because
15:32SPEAKERthey can recognize with the machine learning where the faces, um, and they can cut out
15:37SPEAKERthe, you know, they can say, okay, this is a human face, so let's depth of field out
15:41SPEAKERthe background.
15:42SPEAKERNo problem.
15:43SPEAKERIf you tried to do that with your dog on a single camera, iPhone, it's not going to work
15:46SPEAKERbecause it didn't recognize the dog.
15:47SPEAKERAnd now with the two cameras, it can just say, okay, you want this in focus and everything
15:50SPEAKERelse out of focus, which is, you guys have gotten smart enough to identify a dog.
15:53SPEAKERNo, they, they're using two cameras so they don't have to identify the dog.
15:56SPEAKERYeah.
15:57SPEAKERLife hack.
15:58SPEAKERUm, um, oh, other good thing.
16:00SPEAKERThis is an iOS feature that's presumably coming everywhere, but if you tap and hold the shutter
16:04SPEAKERwhen you're making a video, uh, taking a photo, it'll just go ahead and turn that into a video.
16:10SPEAKERSo just keep shooting video.
16:11SPEAKERIt's kind of like a natural extension of live video.
16:14SPEAKERUm, uh, and this is the first one that has the A13, which is the next SOC from Apple.
16:20SPEAKERRight.
16:21SPEAKERUm, they specifically said it is 8.5 billion transistors.
16:25SPEAKERUh, uh, I looked up some other transistor counts, but it's, it's 3 billion for an Intel
16:30SPEAKERX 86 coffee lake CPU, which kind of has a GPU, but not really.
16:34SPEAKERUm, so that's, that's a lot of transistors.
16:37SPEAKERIt has dedicated machine learning models, uh, a controller to dedicate a CPU and GPU
16:43SPEAKERresources to the machine learning code as needed to not slow down the rest of the machine.
16:48SPEAKERWow.
16:49SPEAKERSo like you can say it can look at the code and say, Hey, this part should be running
16:52SPEAKERon the CPU.
16:53SPEAKERIt should be running on the GPU and dull it out and pull it back in before the machine
16:55SPEAKERslows down.
16:56SPEAKERAre they, are they still at the point where they're claiming like they're doubling performance
16:59SPEAKERyear over year, every year?
17:00SPEAKERThey did not.
17:01SPEAKERThey didn't say that this year?
17:02SPEAKEROne of the interesting things about this keynote, Brad, is that they did not use any, any relative
17:06SPEAKERmeasures.
17:07SPEAKERNo kidding.
17:08SPEAKEROkay.
17:09SPEAKERCause they've been saying exactly that for a very long time.
17:11SPEAKERSo I guess maybe they kind of, I would say we're at a process, we're at a situation where
17:15SPEAKERthat's probably not going to happen so much anymore.
17:17SPEAKEROkay.
17:18SPEAKERI figured that had to happen eventually.
17:19SPEAKERIt didn't seem sustainable.
17:20SPEAKERI mean, it happened on the CPU's a few years ago.
17:22SPEAKERYeah.
17:23SPEAKERWhich I don't, I don't want to get too far afield of the events of today, but that leads
17:26SPEAKERme to ask like when are MacBooks just going to start moving to these ARM based?
17:31SPEAKERLook, in 2013 I predicted when they started making their own SOC's that this is the end
17:36SPEAKERresult is that their laptops are going to be ARM based.
17:38SPEAKERYeah.
17:39SPEAKERIt is happening.
17:40SPEAKERThere's no doubt in my mind.
17:41SPEAKERIt's gotta be, it can't be that much farther off.
17:42SPEAKERLike they're positioning iPads against also, uh, Wintel laptops.
17:46SPEAKERYeah.
17:47SPEAKERYeah.
17:48SPEAKERDoesn't the new Mac OS have some kind of iOS compatibility layer?
17:51SPEAKERI don't know about that.
17:52SPEAKERMaybe.
17:53SPEAKERAlready.
17:54SPEAKERI thought that was the case.
17:55SPEAKERMaybe.
17:56SPEAKERCause like their new arcade service, the games will run on all their platforms.
17:58SPEAKERBut isn't that just a cross compile because of that stuff?
18:00SPEAKERYeah.
18:01SPEAKERThey're probably just ported, but I wonder if they're at least starting to lay the groundwork
18:04SPEAKERfor that stuff.
18:05SPEAKERI look, they've been doing that for a long time.
18:07SPEAKERIf you, if you look at how like the apps launching the Mac app store seven years ago is the beginning
18:12SPEAKERof the groundwork for that because it means that they can then either force people to
18:16SPEAKERcross compile for all the platforms when they want to submit their apps or, you know, just
18:21SPEAKERautomatically have it happen.
18:22SPEAKERSo do these, uh, again, real tangent here, but do these arm based, do these SOCs, um,
18:29SPEAKERscale well to higher clock speeds?
18:31SPEAKERLike if you're able to throw more, more voltage at one of these things and better cooling,
18:34SPEAKERcan you, I mean, it's like anything else, but the benefit of the idea is that this is
18:39SPEAKERperforming as well as a, like they've, they've reached a point where they're performing comparably
18:43SPEAKERto low end mobile chipsets now, especially if you factor in GPU performance.
18:48SPEAKERSo if you're doing stuff that requires, you know, 3d acceleration on the desktop, like
18:51SPEAKERvideo, like, you know, say 4k video playback or, um, any modern web renderer uses 3d accelerators
18:59SPEAKERat this point, right?
19:00SPEAKERThey've got all that stuff.
19:01SPEAKERThey've got all that stuff handled and built in because they can control, they control
19:04SPEAKERthe whole thing, right?
19:05SPEAKERSo, so they're not reliant on Intel's crappy GPUs to get games running on, on Mac books
19:11SPEAKERlike they are now.
19:12SPEAKERThey can just say, look, we want this GPU to kick ass and they, and they do that.
19:15SPEAKERAnd they did talk about performance.
19:16SPEAKERIt's faster, yada, yada, yada.
19:18SPEAKERBut the performance on mobile right now is such that, you know, uh, Qualcomm and Samsung
19:23SPEAKERhave lagged behind so far what Apple's been able to do over the last two or three generations
19:27SPEAKERthat like the thing that they're beating is last year's iPhone processor, not, not the
19:32SPEAKERlatest Qualcomm nine 45 or whatever it is.
19:36SPEAKERRight.
19:37SPEAKERUm, they also have machine learning, uh, matrix multiply.
19:40SPEAKERSo a lot of machine learning algorithms use matrix multiplication and they have dedicated
19:45SPEAKERslots on the, on the SOC for that, which looked like maybe somewhere between five and 10%
19:51SPEAKERof the overall SOC if their, if their map was like, they didn't say it was accurate,
19:55SPEAKERbut if it was, then that, that looks like about the size of the, of the dye, which is
19:59SPEAKERa ton.
20:00SPEAKERYeah.
20:01SPEAKERUm, did they give any examples for how that would be applied?
20:03SPEAKERUh, yeah, so it's like the face recognition, um, the focal plane stuff, like all of the
20:10SPEAKERSiri voice recognition, I have to assume uses that stuff at this point.
20:15SPEAKERUm, uh, probably even down to stuff like how they, if they're filtering email with that
20:20SPEAKERnow, which isn't out of the question, I don't know if they actually are, but my assumption
20:24SPEAKERis it's being used everywhere.
20:25SPEAKERThere's, there's also third party apps can have access to it cause there's API's that
20:29SPEAKERthey announced with at WWDC to tap into that stuff.
20:33SPEAKERUm, they're claiming that the battery for this is four times better than the iPhone
20:37SPEAKERXS.
20:39SPEAKERThat's for the, uh, sorry, that's the 11 pro.
20:42SPEAKERThat's what I wrote down.
20:43SPEAKERHuh?
20:44SPEAKERWas it, I thought I read it was four hours longer.
20:46SPEAKERFour hours.
20:47SPEAKERYeah.
20:48SPEAKERI said it is.
20:49SPEAKERI wrote four better.
20:50SPEAKERSo you're right.
20:51SPEAKERIt is four hours.
20:52SPEAKERFour X, I will go buy one immediately.
20:53SPEAKERThat's insane.
20:54SPEAKERIf it's a four day battery, I'd be right there.
20:55SPEAKERUm, was there some kind of optimization going on around that?
20:58SPEAKERSo around energy usage, part of it's the screen, it seems like, and then part of it's just
21:02SPEAKERthe normal, every time we do a new CPU, that's a pretty big pump.
21:06SPEAKERYeah.
21:07SPEAKERI think the phone's a little bit bigger.
21:09SPEAKERI didn't actually look at the specs, but it looks to me like the whole thing's just a
21:12SPEAKERlittle bit, a little bit larger.
21:13SPEAKERA little chunkier.
21:14SPEAKERUm, so that's, that's kind of the 11.
21:16SPEAKEROkay.
21:17SPEAKEROne last question.
21:18SPEAKERYeah.
21:19SPEAKERWhen is the notch going away?
21:20SPEAKERDude, or, or you gotta stop, you gotta stop with this notch business.
21:24SPEAKERAre they at least working actively on, on eliminating it?
21:28SPEAKERI don't...
21:29SPEAKERDo you think there is there R and D going on somewhere at Apple to remove like, cause
21:32SPEAKERwhat is it?
21:33SPEAKERIt's the, it's the front facing camera.
21:34SPEAKERYep.
21:35SPEAKERThere's probably...
21:36SPEAKERThe ear hole.
21:37SPEAKERYeah.
21:38SPEAKERThere's a couple of microphones.
21:39SPEAKERWell, I think that can be hidden.
21:40SPEAKERThere's an illuminator.
21:41SPEAKERI, I feel like, look, you gotta stop worrying and love the notch, man.
21:45SPEAKERI just, I really, I like what the, I like the pixels.
21:48SPEAKERLike there's a nice...
21:49SPEAKERIt has lovely round curves all around.
21:51SPEAKERIt's round all the way.
21:52SPEAKERIt's a pixel.
21:53SPEAKERThere's a nice symmetry to the way that their screen is uniform.
21:55SPEAKERWhich, which, well, one of the pixels has a bad notch though, has a real fat, chunky
21:58SPEAKERnotch.
21:59SPEAKEROh, maybe it's the newest one.
22:00SPEAKERI don't know which one I was looking at.
22:01SPEAKERI don't keep up actively with that stuff.
22:02SPEAKERI don't know if it was the...
22:03SPEAKERI don't like the Samsung phone that has the hole.
22:06SPEAKERIt just has like a hole where the camera is.
22:08SPEAKERI feel...
22:09SPEAKERI find that very disconcerting.
22:10SPEAKEROne of the Android, one of the flagship Android phones I just saw, which I'd swear was one
22:13SPEAKERof the newest pixels, had no notch and just was this kind of the same uniform shape on
22:17SPEAKERboth ends.
22:18SPEAKERWell, so there's no Pixel 4 yet.
22:19SPEAKERThey haven't announced that yet.
22:20SPEAKERSo I think that'll be later this year.
22:21SPEAKERI want to say stuff was leaking.
22:23SPEAKERThere's the Pixel 3 and 3 bit XL don't have any notches because they have a bar on the
22:29SPEAKERtop.
22:30SPEAKERThat must be what I was looking at.
22:31SPEAKERBut I think the Pixel 3a has a notch, I'm not sure.
22:34SPEAKERI'll stop asking about the notch for now.
22:35SPEAKERIt's okay.
22:36SPEAKERThe notch...
22:37SPEAKERLook, the notch...
22:38SPEAKERI was worried about the notch.
22:39SPEAKERI was ready to return the phone if the notch was bad.
22:41SPEAKERI stopped caring about the notch about three hours in.
22:43SPEAKERI'm sure I'm getting this two in three days, but...
22:45SPEAKERDo you know what the weird thing was about going to the notch phone?
22:48SPEAKERIs when they added the thing where you swipe from the top right corner to pull down the
22:51SPEAKERcontrol center, I started wearing out the top right corner of the case because I pull
22:56SPEAKERdown.
22:57SPEAKERYou do that so many times a day.
22:58SPEAKERHuh.
22:59SPEAKERYeah.
23:00SPEAKERIt's an inconvenient motion.
23:01SPEAKERAnyway.
23:02SPEAKERSo, okay.
23:03SPEAKERSo iPhone 11 Pro, it's the same stuff.
23:04SPEAKERIt's the A13 SoC.
23:10SPEAKERThey're relabeling the OLED panel because the contrast ratio and the brightness are better.
23:14SPEAKERAnd now it's the Super Retina XDR display.
23:16SPEAKERIt has a two million to one contrast ratio, which means that the blacks are really, really...
23:21SPEAKERWhen you need to have blacks that are really, really, really, really, really black.
23:26SPEAKERUtter absence of illumination.
23:28SPEAKERComplete, complete darkness.
23:30SPEAKERYou can do that.
23:35SPEAKERLet's see, that's it.
23:36SPEAKERThe battery's four hours better than the iPhone XS, which people said didn't like the battery
23:40SPEAKERtoo much.
23:42SPEAKERThey showed a deep fusion computational photography thing that is a beta or not happening at launch,
23:48SPEAKERwhere they take all three inputs from all three cameras and then use math and machine
23:53SPEAKERlearning and neuroscience nonsense to make the picture look really, really good.
23:58SPEAKERSuper focused on...
23:59SPEAKERSo they're relabeling it from components from each photo?
24:01SPEAKERYeah, they...
24:02SPEAKERThe most focused parts of each one?
24:03SPEAKERThey showed a guy with a knit sweater, cable knit sweater, and a really dense beard, and
24:09SPEAKERthe whole thing was in focus.
24:10SPEAKERSomething that would traditionally confuse the hell out of...
24:13SPEAKERYeah, and probably also jack up the image compression.
24:17SPEAKERSo it seemed like it was working within all the constraints.
24:22SPEAKERThe big deal is the third camera.
24:24SPEAKERSo the three cameras are the normal wide angle, which is a 26 millimeter equivalent F1.8 stop,
24:30SPEAKERso nice depth of field, really wide open aperture.
24:33SPEAKERZoom, which is a F2.0 equivalent, F2 stop, 52 millimeter equivalent.
24:41SPEAKERAnd the ultra wide, which is a 13 millimeter equivalent F2.4 with 120 degree field of view.
24:48SPEAKERAnd between the three cameras, they're now saying you get about a four times optical
24:51SPEAKERzoom.
24:52SPEAKERSo it seems like it merges between them seamlessly.
24:54SPEAKERWow.
24:55SPEAKERAnd...
24:56SPEAKERI saw that animation of somebody just sliding the fake dial.
24:59SPEAKERYeah, and when you're looking at the zoom, it shows you the wide grayed out, the part
25:07SPEAKERthat's not gonna be in the shot grayed out.
25:09SPEAKERI'm surprised they aren't just taking all three pictures every time, 'cause space is
25:13SPEAKERcheap.
25:14SPEAKERThey wanna sell bigger phones.
25:15SPEAKERWhy not give you the options?
25:16SPEAKERBut I understand why they wouldn't do that.
25:20SPEAKERIt seemed really, that part, it seems like it's very good.
25:24SPEAKERSo that's the thing.
25:26SPEAKERThe camera's good.
25:27SPEAKERWho knew?
25:28SPEAKERUntil they think of another thing.
25:29SPEAKEROh, and they're adding night mode, which is a pixel feature that's been on Android for
25:33SPEAKERa while, but it turns on automatically, which isn't the way, you have to select it on Android.
25:39SPEAKERAnd they bracket and combine images from both cameras, both cameras on the 11, presumably
25:44SPEAKERall three cameras on the Pro, to fuse them together, and it reduces blur and motion by
25:49SPEAKERlooking at the accelerometer and all the other stuff that it has access to.
25:52SPEAKERWhat's gonna happen decades from now when our record of this period of history exists
25:56SPEAKERin perfect, utter clarity.
26:00SPEAKERViewing history through the lens of bad 16 millimeter film and warping, decaying VHS tapes.
26:08SPEAKERYou know what I mean?
26:10SPEAKERThere's a feeling of peering back through time to a less civilized age when you look
26:14SPEAKERat that stuff.
26:15SPEAKEROh, we'll have that, because people have all the terrible Instagram filters that they use
26:18SPEAKERon all their pictures, and everything's bad digital zoom now.
26:24SPEAKERWe have a distinct look.
26:25SPEAKERWe still have a feeling.
26:26SPEAKERYeah, I guess you're right.
26:30SPEAKERSo that's iPhones.
26:31SPEAKERThey ship September 20th.
26:32SPEAKERYeah.
26:33SPEAKEROh, ship?
26:34SPEAKERYeah, that's what they said.
26:35SPEAKERThat's a lot sooner, right?
26:36SPEAKERYou can order them on Friday.
26:37SPEAKERThis Friday you can pre-order, and I think they ship on the 20th.
26:40SPEAKERI think it used to be a matter of weeks, right?
26:42SPEAKERThat's two weeks from today.
26:43SPEAKEROh, I mean like six weeks or more.
26:44SPEAKEROh no, it's always been two weeks.
26:46SPEAKERThey announce it, you order it the next Friday, and then you pick it up the Friday after.
26:50SPEAKERMaybe it was just one or two generations.
26:51SPEAKERI feel like there was a long delay.
26:53SPEAKERSo the very first one, they announced it, and then it was a long time before they started
26:56SPEAKERselling it, because they did everything in the market.
26:59SPEAKERThey always roll them out really fast so that they don't-- because basically, the time between
27:03SPEAKERthey announce a new one and the time when the new one ships, they're going to have no
27:08SPEAKERdisinterested customers coming in and buying iPhones, which is, I assume, a significant
27:12SPEAKERportion of their audience.
27:13SPEAKERThat's fair.
27:14SPEAKERBut yeah, so today is the 10th, and the 20th is 10 days from now.
27:18SPEAKERSo that's right.
27:19SPEAKERThat's a lot of talking about phones that inherently, I feel like, just aren't all that
27:24SPEAKERexciting.
27:25SPEAKERI mean, it's one of those things that's always like little tiny steps forward.
27:28SPEAKERYeah, nice iterative improvements, but--
27:30SPEAKERBut yeah, at the end of the day, they're not changing the world.
27:33SPEAKERIt's just a better iPhone.
27:34SPEAKERI mean, are phones ever going to change the world again?
27:35SPEAKEROr like that happened already, right?
27:37SPEAKERI think they're going to stop being phones and start being something else before they
27:40SPEAKERchange the world again.
27:42SPEAKERI mean, what would change the world is having something that's a different form factor.
27:51SPEAKERSo if you're talking about something that's like a cylinder that you pull the OLED screen
27:54SPEAKERout to look at when you want to use your phone, something that we haven't imagined yet.
27:59SPEAKERThe folding phone that Samsung's now actually going to-- they sold it, and they didn't sell
28:02SPEAKERit, and now they're selling it again, and they've changed the screen protector.
28:06SPEAKERDid you hear about this last year?
28:08SPEAKERVaguely.
28:09SPEAKERSo they released a phone that was folding.
28:10SPEAKERYes, I saw the hubbub around all the malfunctioning.
28:14SPEAKERWell, it had a flexible piece of glass on the front that was part of the physical screen.
28:19SPEAKERBut it looked like one of those screen protectors that you get when you get a new phone, so
28:22SPEAKERabout half the people pulled it off, and in doing so, just fucked up the phone beyond
28:27SPEAKERall recognition.
28:28SPEAKERSo it was not the phone's fault?
28:29SPEAKERIt was bad design.
28:30SPEAKERPoor design.
28:31SPEAKERYeah, I would say it was a sketchy design.
28:33SPEAKERYou want to take a break and talk about iPads and Apple phones?
28:36SPEAKERCool our jets a little bit before we get into the rest of the stuff.
28:40SPEAKEROkay, we'll be right back.
28:45SPEAKERHey, we're back!
28:49SPEAKERYep.
28:50SPEAKERI'm ready to watch your chili-- ooh, good segue.
28:53SPEAKEROh, man, I didn't know you were going to talk about the chili.
28:55SPEAKEROh, man, this chili smells so good, I can't not talk about the chili.
28:58SPEAKERI'm sorry.
28:59SPEAKERIt's okay.
29:00SPEAKERThat's what we get for recording at dinnertime.
29:01SPEAKERHey, look, this is a double podcast day for you.
29:03SPEAKERYou're doing the hard, heavy lifting here.
29:05SPEAKERThat's right.
29:06SPEAKEROkay, so watch an iPad.
29:07SPEAKERI think we should do it.
29:08SPEAKERWatch next?
29:09SPEAKERYeah, amazingly the Apple Watch seems to be the most interesting thing today.
29:14SPEAKERAs somebody who burned himself by buying an Apple Watch series-- now the Series Zero,
29:19SPEAKERthe one that they don't even acknowledge existed anymore.
29:22SPEAKERWhat do they actually call it?
29:23SPEAKERSeries Zero.
29:24SPEAKERThey just called it the Apple Watch when they released it.
29:26SPEAKERThey're like, "Here's a $10,000 gold watch.
29:28SPEAKERYou're going to use this for the rest of your life."
29:30SPEAKERAnd then it was like end of life three years later.
29:33SPEAKERYeah.
29:34SPEAKERNot bitter.
29:35SPEAKERThis new one actually seems good.
29:36SPEAKERThe Series Five, it's a little bit bigger, comes in a bunch of colors.
29:42SPEAKERThey're adding titanium.
29:43SPEAKERThe ceramic is back.
29:46SPEAKERAluminum starts at $329.
29:47SPEAKEROh, really?
29:48SPEAKERSorry, $399 for GPS models, $500 for cellular models.
29:53SPEAKERAnd it has a feature that I didn't know I wanted until I heard about it.
29:56SPEAKERWhich is?
29:57SPEAKERIt stays on all the time.
29:58SPEAKERYeah, who knew that having a watch that you can look at at any moment--
30:03SPEAKERI mean, it seems useful.
30:05SPEAKERYeah.
30:06SPEAKERBut I guess I didn't realize it was feasible in any sense.
30:08SPEAKERSo Android watches have been doing it for years.
30:10SPEAKERYeah.
30:11SPEAKERI mean, that's literally the only good-- having had an Android Wear watch, literally the only
30:15SPEAKERthing good about Android Wear watches that the OLED screens would stay on.
30:20SPEAKERThey're using a new-- it's not that new.
30:22SPEAKERThey used it in the last year's watch, too, it seems like.
30:24SPEAKERIt's called an LTPO, a low temperature polycrystalline oxide back for display.
30:30SPEAKERSo it's the thing that makes-- that sits behind the display and lights up the display.
30:34SPEAKERAnd the benefit seems to be that you can run it at very low refresh rates with a commensurate
30:38SPEAKERdrop in power.
30:39SPEAKERSo to recap, OLED screens, if they're showing black, totally off.
30:43SPEAKERRight.
30:44SPEAKERThere's no power drawn by those pixels.
30:45SPEAKERNo power consumption.
30:46SPEAKERBut--
30:47SPEAKERUnless it's colored.
30:48SPEAKERYeah, unless it-- but as soon as one of the other colors comes on, there's power consumption.
30:51SPEAKERRight.
30:52SPEAKERAnd this lets them drop the refresh rate when it's in the low power mode so that it only
30:56SPEAKERupdates a couple of times a second.
30:57SPEAKERWhich is crazy.
30:58SPEAKERI mean-- But the image still persists on the screen?
31:00SPEAKERThe image persists on the screen long enough, yeah.
31:03SPEAKERI think that's really cool.
31:04SPEAKERI think that's good.
31:05SPEAKERLike, the interesting thing to me was how they positioned this.
31:07SPEAKERSo like, they opened the Apple Watch segment with a-- with their normal inspirational kind
31:12SPEAKERof bullshit video.
31:13SPEAKERBut then it turned out to be about people who attributed the Apple Watch with saving
31:17SPEAKERtheir lives.
31:18SPEAKERYeah.
31:19SPEAKERSounds like it's actually quietly becoming the sort of most revered feature of the Apple
31:24SPEAKERWatch.
31:25SPEAKERLike, it seems like-- It came out of nowhere.
31:26SPEAKERThe health stuff seems like it's the thing that has really kind of captured the public
31:28SPEAKERimagination.
31:29SPEAKERHey, Brad, do you want to die?
31:30SPEAKERNot especially.
31:31SPEAKERWell, if you buy this watch and you have a heart attack, it might keep you from dying.
31:35SPEAKEROh, OK.
31:36SPEAKERBut in a very carefully worded way that definitely was vetted by layers upon layers of attorneys.
31:41SPEAKERSure.
31:42SPEAKERNo, they had-- they had-- let's see, they had an older guy who'd been, like, walking
31:49SPEAKERor running and passed out and fell, and the watch-- like, the watch-- if it detects a
31:54SPEAKERfall, it will automatically call.
31:56SPEAKERYou have to turn that feature on.
31:57SPEAKERWow.
31:58SPEAKERIt's for, you know, elderly people, mostly, I assume.
32:00SPEAKERYeah, it just-- it seems like the risk of a false positive would be pretty high with
32:02SPEAKERsomething like that.
32:03SPEAKERWell, it gives you-- like, if you're conscious, it gives you enough opportunity to turn it--
32:06SPEAKERto, like, stop it.
32:07SPEAKERSure.
32:08SPEAKERYou can always just press and hold the button, and it'll-- it'll do an emergency call, like,
32:11SPEAKERif you're in a position-- like, if you're locked in somebody's trunk or something.
32:16SPEAKERIt seemed-- it-- like, it was a very compelling thing, and especially since they added the
32:20SPEAKEREKG with the Series 4, if you have heart conditions, like, if you have atrial fibrillation or--
32:25SPEAKERor, you know, something that-- that is potentially life-threatening but infrequent and undetectable
32:29SPEAKERunless you're in a hospital or hooked up to an EKG, it seems pretty good.
32:34SPEAKERThey talked-- they had a mom who had a pregnancy complication and had to do an emergency c-section,
32:39SPEAKERand the watch was like, hey, your heart rate's high, your EKG is weird, you should go to
32:42SPEAKERthe doctor.
32:43SPEAKERYeah.
32:44SPEAKERStuff like that.
32:45SPEAKERIt was-- it was-- it's-- it's-- it is a-- it has quietly become a reason that I would
32:49SPEAKERlike to get an apple.
32:50SPEAKERTotally.
32:51SPEAKERLike, it's an actual selling point.
32:52SPEAKERYeah.
32:53SPEAKERNot just a, oh, I guess that's nice.
32:54SPEAKERYeah.
32:55SPEAKERThat that's there.
32:56SPEAKERThe thing I was going to say is, like, on a normal week, I would want to talk for a
32:58SPEAKERwhile about, like, where the sensors are in that thing, because I-- I always figured the--
33:01SPEAKERI always thought the underside of the wrist was where all the really valuable telemetry
33:05SPEAKERis available.
33:06SPEAKERSo it--
33:07SPEAKERSo I'm-- I'm-- I'm surprised that at the top of the wrist, it's actually able to collect
33:10SPEAKERthat much.
33:11SPEAKERWhat do you mean?
33:12SPEAKEROh, so--
33:13SPEAKERLike, you know, you always-- you always check pulse.
33:14SPEAKERWell, you-- but pulse-- pulse and EKG are different things.
33:17SPEAKEREKG is nerves-- nerve impulses.
33:19SPEAKERSo it can-- it can apparently lift those through the skin.
33:21SPEAKERThere's-- there's conductors on the back of the thing.
33:23SPEAKEROK.
33:24SPEAKERAnd it can get those from the skin, apparently.
33:25SPEAKERI see.
33:26SPEAKERI don't-- I don't know.
33:27SPEAKERThat-- that's-- that's hard science there.
33:28SPEAKERYeah.
33:29SPEAKERBut they--
33:30SPEAKERThat's the anatomy.
33:31SPEAKERWell, so the thing that was interesting was they talked about the health studies that
33:33SPEAKERthey've done over the last couple of years, one of which was the heart survey, which they
33:38SPEAKERdid with, I think, Apple Watch 2-- Series 2 and newer owners, where they collected just
33:44SPEAKERa ton of heartbeat data from millions and millions of people, and as a result got a
33:48SPEAKERreally good idea of what, like, average heart-- like, a better idea than we've ever had before
33:52SPEAKERwhat an average heart rate is.
33:54SPEAKERIs that data collection that people had to opt into?
33:56SPEAKERYou had to opt in.
33:57SPEAKEROK.
33:58SPEAKERYou had to actually-- like, I-- I went and actually tried to do it, and then they were
33:59SPEAKERlike, you know, your watch is too shitty, we can't use you.
34:02SPEAKERBut you had to sign, like, a normal human study waiver and all that stuff, as if you
34:05SPEAKERwere going to use CSF and, like, participating in it as a data study.
34:08SPEAKERWell, that's-- you know, that's the kind of data collection that you can maybe feel good
34:11SPEAKERabout.
34:12SPEAKERYeah.
34:13SPEAKERAnd-- and they did-- I feel like they made actual promises about not using it for, like,
34:17SPEAKERnefarious stuff, which is-- which is interesting, they--
34:19SPEAKERPromised not to funnel it to your insurance company.
34:21SPEAKERUm, I don't know if they did that.
34:23SPEAKERI don't remember that part.
34:24SPEAKERI would hope so.
34:25SPEAKERI would hope so.
34:26SPEAKERUm, they did say it was going to be anonymized, so.
34:28SPEAKERYeah.
34:29SPEAKERYou know, the normal thing.
34:30SPEAKERYeah.
34:31SPEAKERUh, they announced two new-- two or three new studies, uh, and apps.
34:35SPEAKEROne of them is a hearing study, uh, which means that they're using the microphone.
34:38SPEAKERSo the interesting thing about the watch, you hit it, is it has a bunch of really interesting
34:42SPEAKERinstrumentation.
34:43SPEAKERThere's microphones, there's barometric pressure sensors, there's, um--
34:45SPEAKEROh, I didn't even know about that.
34:47SPEAKERYeah, it has that so you can tell when you're going up and down stairs.
34:49SPEAKERUh, it has GPS, it has, um, uh, it has a compass now, so your GPS is going to be more accurate.
34:57SPEAKERYeah.
34:58SPEAKERI-- I read that, um, it kind of basically gives a, um, there's kind of a rating of confidence
35:04SPEAKERalong with the compass.
35:05SPEAKERThat makes sense.
35:06SPEAKERLike, it basically tells you how-- how confident it is that it's accurate at a given time.
35:10SPEAKERWell, like, you've walked around downtown and used Google Maps or something--
35:13SPEAKEROh, yeah.
35:14SPEAKER--and, like, the compass is going--
35:15SPEAKERYeah, it is--
35:16SPEAKER--to a building where there's a giant steel rod.
35:17SPEAKERYeah, that's fair.
35:18SPEAKERYeah, that's not going to be so good.
35:19SPEAKERI was just surprised that they were that forthright about that, that, like, "Hey, this thing is
35:23SPEAKERnot the most accurate and we're going to be honest with you when it's not."
35:25SPEAKERI mean, that's-- that's probably a liability situation.
35:28SPEAKEROh, sure, yeah.
35:29SPEAKER'Cause, you know, if you--
35:31SPEAKERYeah, when it comes to the direction people are walking or-- or, let's say, maybe incoming
35:36SPEAKERweather disasters, it's--
35:37SPEAKERYeah, or you're on a sailboat.
35:38SPEAKER--it's useful to be accurate about what's happening.
35:41SPEAKERExactly.
35:42SPEAKERSo the-- there's a hearing study that they're adding now, which is going to, like, notify
35:47SPEAKERyou.
35:48SPEAKERIf you sign up for that, it'll notify you if you're in a room that is loud enough to
35:51SPEAKERcause hearing damage--
35:52SPEAKEROh, wow.
35:53SPEAKER--for prolonged exposure--
35:54SPEAKERYeah.
35:55SPEAKER--or for short exposure.
35:56SPEAKERYeah.
35:57SPEAKERThere was a thing about tracking women's menstrual cycle-- menstrual cycle.
36:01SPEAKERHmm.
36:02SPEAKERAnd then the last one I completely missed and I didn't go back and look at it 'cause I was
36:04SPEAKERdoing other things.
36:06SPEAKERIt's cool that they're leaning that hard into that aspect of it, though.
36:08SPEAKERIt seems good.
36:09SPEAKERIt seems like the kind of thing that is really connected with people.
36:11SPEAKERWell, and it's interesting 'cause earlier this week, there was a-- there was information
36:15SPEAKERabout a couple of Facebook apps that tracked menstrual cycles, like, actually just using
36:20SPEAKERthat data and sending it to Facebook, which is not at all what you want--
36:23SPEAKERYeah.
36:24SPEAKER--I would assume.
36:25SPEAKERYeah.
36:26SPEAKERLike, when you had sex, you know, all that kind of business.
36:27SPEAKERHmm.
36:28SPEAKERSo I-- I-- I may be naive here, but I feel like Apple is the-- one of the big tech-- five
36:34SPEAKERtech companies that I would actually trust with intimate personal information like that--
36:38SPEAKERSure.
36:39SPEAKER--more than the others.
36:40SPEAKERYeah.
36:41SPEAKERI-- I messaged FBI Scenario that they--
36:44SPEAKERI mean, they've gone to bat.
36:45SPEAKERYeah.
36:46SPEAKER--seem to have come out on the right side of.
36:47SPEAKERYeah.
36:48SPEAKERI think that's-- I think that's the-- like, that's the big software stuff.
36:51SPEAKERThe LPTO back-- backdrop seems really interesting if they can do dynamic refresh rates.
36:56SPEAKERThey said-- they didn't give a number, but they said all day slash 18-hour battery life.
37:02SPEAKERAnd then the rest of the stuff has been there for a while.
37:04SPEAKERIt comes in aluminum and silver, gold, and space gray, stainless, gold, space black,
37:09SPEAKERand polish, which is, I think, just the shiny metal one that I like.
37:12SPEAKERThere's a titanium one now, which is exciting.
37:14SPEAKERYeah.
37:15SPEAKERAnd-- and brushed metal and space black.
37:17SPEAKERAnd then the ceramic one, which looks like a future watch and is really cool, but is
37:20SPEAKERnot worth $1,000.
37:21SPEAKERI was going to say-- oh, did they announce that price?
37:23SPEAKERBecause I started to say I-- I noted that I-- the prices of the titanium and ceramic
37:27SPEAKERwere not easy to come by.
37:28SPEAKERThey didn't talk about prices much at all.
37:30SPEAKERWhich I assume means that they are astronomical.
37:32SPEAKERSo the edition watch starts at $800 for the titanium, or $1,299 for the ceramic.
37:42SPEAKERIt looks really cool, though, Brad.
37:44SPEAKERWell, I'm sure it does.
37:45SPEAKERYou've got to think about how cool it's going to look.
37:46SPEAKERAnd then--
37:47SPEAKERHow cool does your Series Zero watch?
37:48SPEAKERSo think about how cool it's going to look in four years when you're running the same
37:52SPEAKERversion of OS for, like, three years running.
37:54SPEAKERThat's the thing to remember.
37:55SPEAKEROK.
37:56SPEAKERAll right.
37:57SPEAKERThey didn't talk about upgrading the CPU this time, so I wonder if they've-- they've settled
38:01SPEAKERon a--
38:02SPEAKERA flaw that they had?
38:03SPEAKEROh, really?
38:04SPEAKERThey had done so, but I could be wrong?
38:06SPEAKERThey didn't talk about it in the keynote.
38:07SPEAKERYeah.
38:08SPEAKERIf they did.
38:09SPEAKEROK.
38:10SPEAKERSo I just looked it up.
38:11SPEAKERIt's an S5.
38:12SPEAKERIt's interesting that they're not-- they're doing the sapphire crystal on the Series Five
38:17SPEAKERGPS and cellular, but not the aluminum.
38:20SPEAKERAnd I think you have to get cellular if you get anything but an aluminum model, is what
38:24SPEAKERit looks like to me.
38:26SPEAKERHas that just been better scratch resistance and so forth?
38:29SPEAKERYeah.
38:30SPEAKERSo it's--
38:31SPEAKEROh, that's what they use on the camera lenses, right?
38:32SPEAKERYeah.
38:33SPEAKERIt's on the camera lenses.
38:34SPEAKERIf you've ever looked at, like, your phone when it's two or three years old and it has,
38:37SPEAKERlike, little micro scratches all over the front of the screen--
38:39SPEAKERYeah, like you have to tilt it in a bright light to see them.
38:41SPEAKERYeah.
38:42SPEAKERThe sapphire lens, my Series Zero, one thing that it's great at--
38:45SPEAKERYeah.
38:46SPEAKER--four, five, six years in, whatever, it's five years in.
38:48SPEAKERNo scratches.
38:49SPEAKEROh, it's got the--
38:50SPEAKERYeah, it's got the-- so I got the stainless one because I wanted to see what the sapphire--
38:53SPEAKERhow the sapphire aged, specifically, and it has aged better than anything else about that
38:57SPEAKERdevice.
38:58SPEAKERWorks as advertised.
38:59SPEAKERIt even is all dinged up, and the sapphire's fine.
39:02SPEAKERYeah.
39:03SPEAKERSo that's it.
39:04SPEAKERI--
39:05SPEAKERSo you cannot get that on the aluminum at all?
39:06SPEAKERYou cannot get the sapphire on the aluminum.
39:07SPEAKERThat's a shame.
39:08SPEAKERYou have to buy the $600 one, $600 one to get that.
39:12SPEAKERYou know, look, if you want a premium product, you have to pay a premium price, Brad.
39:16SPEAKERIt's a watch.
39:17SPEAKERNice.
39:18SPEAKERThis is an heirloom you can pass down to your child--
39:19SPEAKEROh, of course.
39:20SPEAKER--within the next five to seven years.
39:21SPEAKERYes.
39:22SPEAKERAt most.
39:23SPEAKERAre we moving on from the watch?
39:25SPEAKERBecause I have one kind of use case question.
39:26SPEAKERYes, hit me.
39:28SPEAKERIf this was the last--
39:29SPEAKERI got nothing else on watch stuff.
39:30SPEAKER--watchy topic.
39:31SPEAKERI mean, this is probably old hat for people that have had smartwatches for a while, but
39:35SPEAKERsell or no?
39:36SPEAKERLike LTE or no?
39:37SPEAKERLike I--
39:38SPEAKERSo they turned the walkie-talkie thing back on.
39:41SPEAKERDo you know about that?
39:42SPEAKERIs that the-- I'm guessing it's some kind of Dick Tracy-style thing?
39:44SPEAKERYeah, you can basically-- like if you're out-- if you have your phone with you, you can just
39:48SPEAKERwalkie-talkie somebody.
39:49SPEAKERHalf the reason to get the watch, right?
39:50SPEAKERYeah, that's the only reason I wanted the Series 4.
39:53SPEAKERThey had to turn it off because of security stuff for a while, but they turned it back
39:57SPEAKERon in April, I think, and it seems pretty good.
40:01SPEAKERLike that and being able to call from your phone, like there's something compelling about,
40:06SPEAKERto me, as the parent of a child, that I often go out on bike rides with my kids and stuff,
40:10SPEAKERnot having to take my wallet and my phone and still be able to make an emergency call
40:16SPEAKERor call Gina if I need to pick up or something like that.
40:17SPEAKERI guess I could see that.
40:19SPEAKERDo you use Apple Pay?
40:20SPEAKERNo, but that's kind of part of the reason I want to get a watch, actually.
40:22SPEAKERSo I was going to say that--
40:23SPEAKERThe Apple Card, the cash back on the Apple Card if you're Apple Pay is pretty good.
40:29SPEAKERThat's a whole other topic, but yeah.
40:31SPEAKERI find myself using Apple Pay a lot when I'm out and about doing stuff.
40:34SPEAKERIf we go ride the bikes to get ice cream, they take Apple Pay so I don't take a wallet
40:38SPEAKERor anything.
40:39SPEAKERI just wear comfortable pants and not have to have a wallet while I'm pedaling the bike.
40:42SPEAKERIt's handy.
40:43SPEAKERThis one, I don't know if this is a new feature, but this one when you're swimming, it tracks
40:46SPEAKERdistance swim.
40:47SPEAKERWow.
40:48SPEAKERWhich seems like magic.
40:49SPEAKERIs it safe to just swim with it now?
40:50SPEAKERYeah, it's that waterproof.
40:51SPEAKERWow.
40:52SPEAKERYeah.
40:53SPEAKERI figured they were still at the stage of like, yeah, it's mostly water resistant, but
40:57SPEAKERdon't dive with it.
40:58SPEAKERNo, I'm sure it's don't dive with it.
40:59SPEAKERWell, or you know what I mean, don't take, don't submerge it is what I mean.
41:02SPEAKERYou know, they showed a picture of a person swimming, so I assume it's totally kosher
41:06SPEAKERnow.
41:07SPEAKERYeah.
41:08SPEAKEROh, and the emergency SOS stuff is now international in like 127 countries, not just the handful
41:15SPEAKERthat it was for.
41:16SPEAKERThat's cool.
41:17SPEAKERI'm just, I'm trying to think like on a practical basis how often I would not have my phone
41:19SPEAKERwith me and it's not often it's, but I mean the phone, I mean the watch is functionally
41:24SPEAKERkind of useless without a phone, right?
41:26SPEAKERIf you don't have the cell model, well, it'll tell you the time and you can use, you can
41:30SPEAKERlisten to music and it'll like track a workout.
41:34SPEAKERAnd with the GPS models, it'll track a workout and like give you routes, like it'll upload
41:39SPEAKERyour routes to Strava or Runkeeper or whatever you want when you come back to the home office.
41:45SPEAKERIt seems like, look, I, the question isn't do you want to pay the extra a hundred bucks
41:52SPEAKERfor the, for the cellular model?
41:53SPEAKERDo you want to pay the extra 10 bucks a month to your carrier because that's going to add
41:57SPEAKERup way faster.
42:00SPEAKERThe one thing I will say is you can often get discounts from your carrier.
42:04SPEAKERLike if you get, if you get the, like Verizon wants to sell me hardware because I haven't
42:09SPEAKERbought hardware from them in a really long time and they're, they're willing to give
42:12SPEAKERme deep discounts on Apple watch series threes with cellular that would probably offset the
42:18SPEAKERcost of the first year's service.
42:19SPEAKEROkay.
42:20SPEAKERSo you want to talk about iPad?
42:23SPEAKERSure.
42:24SPEAKERThis is, this isn't, I wasn't expecting this.
42:25SPEAKERI think the rumor sites had this in there, but they are replacing the sixth generation
42:31SPEAKER9.7 inch iPad, the one with the home button, which is to be clear, I believe the screen
42:36SPEAKERsize they've had since the, it's the base model, the iPad was incepted.
42:41SPEAKERIt is the default is the iPad ass iPad.
42:44SPEAKERRight.
42:45SPEAKERYeah.
42:46SPEAKERThe one that we took apart in the basement at whiskey media.
42:47SPEAKERLike that is the screen on the iPad since time immemorial.
42:50SPEAKERSo they're replacing the sixth gen with the seventh gen, they're just calling it the new
42:53SPEAKERiPad.
42:54SPEAKERThe display is now 10.2 inches.
42:56SPEAKERThey made the bezel a little bit smaller.
42:58SPEAKERIt seems they didn't talk about how, it's funny, they didn't talk about how thin anything
43:01SPEAKERwas today.
43:02SPEAKERHuh?
43:03SPEAKERSo that, that to me says everything must be getting fatter now that Johnny Ive's gone.
43:08SPEAKERIt uses this one, this one, the big, the big hits on this one are that it has the smart
43:12SPEAKERconnectors.
43:13SPEAKERYou can use the keyboard and the pencil, but it's the old pencil, not the new pencil.
43:17SPEAKERSo there's a gen one pencil, gen two pencil.
43:20SPEAKERThe pros use the new, the current pros use the gen two pencil.
43:23SPEAKERThe old pros use the gen one pencil and now this one and whatever the other one they announced
43:28SPEAKERa few months ago.
43:29SPEAKERThis is getting complicated.
43:30SPEAKERIt is getting complicated.
43:33SPEAKERIt seems nice.
43:34SPEAKERThey, they were, they were in the, in, on the slides they showed it competing with a
43:39SPEAKERwindows laptop, like a cheap windows laptop.
43:41SPEAKERAnd the prices starts at 329 bucks.
43:43SPEAKERWhich that's the actual, like that's the actual story, right?
43:47SPEAKERIs that what you're getting for that price is actually competitive now?
43:50SPEAKERWell, so the, the last one was also 329, so they didn't drop the price, but now that it
43:54SPEAKERhas the smart connector.
43:55SPEAKERYeah, smart connector, bigger screen, faster.
43:57SPEAKERAnd pencil support.
43:58SPEAKERYeah.
43:59SPEAKERI think all of those are pretty good.
44:00SPEAKERLike it's, it's starting to pick up some pro features is what I mean.
44:03SPEAKERYeah, the pro features are filtering down, right?
44:05SPEAKERThe bad news is the 32 gig, the 329 model is only 32 gigs, which is a little bit offensive.
44:11SPEAKERYeah, I agree.
44:12SPEAKERUm, it's a hundred bucks more to go to 128 gigs.
44:15SPEAKERYeah.
44:16SPEAKERI'm not like, that seems like, uh, Hey, I want something to browse the web and watch
44:21SPEAKERvideo while I'm sitting on the living room and the TV's taken by somebody else.
44:25SPEAKERSure.
44:26SPEAKERUm, but 300, 300, like this, we shouldn't discount the smart connector.
44:30SPEAKERIt's smart, adding keyboard support makes it a viable laptop competitor.
44:34SPEAKERSomething I meant to mention with the phones and completely forgot, um, and I didn't expect
44:39SPEAKERthis to be in this iPad because it's considered a pro feature on the iPad pro, but the 120
44:44SPEAKERHertz screen.
44:45SPEAKEROh, is that, is that 120 Hertz screen on this?
44:47SPEAKERNo, on the pros it is, but not on, it's not on this one, not on this, but I meant to bring
44:53SPEAKERthat up earlier because I, in a perfect world, I would have liked to have thought that a,
44:58SPEAKERan iPhone called pro might also have that feature.
45:00SPEAKEROh, is it?
45:01SPEAKERI didn't even look at that.
45:02SPEAKERNo, it doesn't.
45:03SPEAKERIt does.
45:04SPEAKEROh, battery life.
45:05SPEAKERRight.
45:06SPEAKERIs that why?
45:07SPEAKERProbably.
45:08SPEAKEROkay.
45:09SPEAKERI mean, that thing has a ton of space for battery.
45:10SPEAKERYeah.
45:11SPEAKERCause I've got not a, not the current iPad pro, but the 10.5.
45:12SPEAKERIt's the first 10-inch iPad pro.
45:13SPEAKERThe first model that had the 120 Hertz screen and it's, it's, it's night and day.
45:16SPEAKERLike I can never go back now.
45:18SPEAKERI, I liked that a lot.
45:19SPEAKERSo nice.
45:20SPEAKERI wouldn't, if they do that and it's probably only going to be in the big boy.
45:24SPEAKERLike it's just, yeah, no, it's mesmerizing.
45:27SPEAKERI like, I have a 60 Hertz G-Sync monitor at home and I'm sad because I, I wish it was
45:33SPEAKER120 or 144 Hertz.
45:35SPEAKERYeah.
45:36SPEAKERI know, I know, uh, God was it razor or somebody made 120 Hertz phone.
45:40SPEAKERI wouldn't buy that.
45:41SPEAKERNo, I'm not saying, I'm not saying anybody should buy that.
45:43SPEAKERI'm just saying it's been attempted.
45:44SPEAKERYeah.
45:45SPEAKERPeople have done it.
45:46SPEAKERUm, but I feel like it's telling that they were the only ones that did it right.
45:49SPEAKERIf you're running 60 or 30 Hertz on the phone screen most of the time and you go up to 120
45:53SPEAKERyou're doubling or, or quadrupling your battery drive, which seems, seems like a lot.
45:58SPEAKERThat's fair.
45:59SPEAKERBut God, it's so nice.
46:00SPEAKERUm, I think that's it on the iPad.
46:02SPEAKERYeah.
46:03SPEAKERIt's, it's a pretty minor thing.
46:04SPEAKERI mean, it's nice that the, the, the, the loop, I was surprised it was only an A10 since
46:08SPEAKERthe mini is an A12 now.
46:10SPEAKERYeah.
46:11SPEAKERUm, CPU, uh, SOC and then the other stuff they talked about as we wrap it up here, um,
46:17SPEAKERthey announced dates on TV, Apple TV plus, which is their TV service and game service,
46:24SPEAKERuh, which are Apple arcade.
46:26SPEAKERThey're five bucks each a month, uh, games launches next week.
46:30SPEAKERI think we capture next on September 19th, probably when the, I, the next iOS launch
46:36SPEAKERhappens.
46:37SPEAKERIf I had to guess.
46:38SPEAKERI think that is announced actually.
46:39SPEAKEROkay.
46:40SPEAKERThey didn't, they didn't talk about the keynote, but I said it's sometime between now and when
46:42SPEAKERthe hardware shows.
46:43SPEAKERI'm pretty sure I said I saw 19th.
46:45SPEAKERUm, and then the TV plus Apple TV plus launches on November 1st.
46:49SPEAKEROkay.
46:50SPEAKERUm, they showed a couple of games.
46:52SPEAKERI don't, I wasn't super like they showed Frogger city or Frogger that the game looked terrible
46:58SPEAKERfrom Konami.
46:59SPEAKERYeah.
47:00SPEAKERUm, they showed a cap com like side scrolling 2d in a subnautica type game that looked kind
47:03SPEAKERof interesting and weird.
47:05SPEAKERThe only thing I care about is a new choo choo rocket, but they announced a new choo
47:08SPEAKERchoo rocket.
47:09SPEAKERThey announced a new choo choo rocket.
47:10SPEAKERWhat?
47:11SPEAKERThe first new choo choo rocket game perhaps since 1999 or 2000.
47:14SPEAKERWow.
47:15SPEAKERWas the last one on the Xbox when I re-released it for Xbox 360.
47:18SPEAKERIt's always just been re-releases of that same game.
47:20SPEAKEROh wow.
47:21SPEAKERYeah.
47:22SPEAKEROn GBA.
47:23SPEAKERYeah.
47:24SPEAKER360, it was 360 arcade.
47:25SPEAKERWas it?
47:26SPEAKERIt might've been.
47:27SPEAKEROr maybe I'm thinking about every extend extreme or one of those or boom boom rocket is what
47:33SPEAKERI'm thinking about, which is the fireworks game, which is also dope, but not as good
47:36SPEAKERas choo choo rocket.
47:37SPEAKERNo.
47:38SPEAKERFew things are.
47:39SPEAKERNo.
47:40SPEAKERUm, that Annapurna rhythm racer thing that they showed was pretty good.
47:43SPEAKERThat's not, um, sayonara wild horses.
47:46SPEAKERSayonara wild, yeah.
47:47SPEAKERThat's also coming to, that's coming into the Switch.
47:49SPEAKERYeah.
47:50SPEAKERYeah.
47:51SPEAKERUh, yeah.
47:52SPEAKERI don't know that service.
47:53SPEAKERI might try the free month just to fiddle around with some of that stuff.
47:56SPEAKERSo the big news, if you buy a new phone, you get the year first year free.
47:59SPEAKERYeah.
48:00SPEAKERWas it the case for both arcade and TV?
48:02SPEAKERThat part was unclear.
48:03SPEAKERI wonder if you have to choose or if you get, if you buy a phone and an iPad, does it stack?
48:08SPEAKERThere's a lot of questions.
48:09SPEAKEROkay.
48:10SPEAKERI'm kind of shocked by that, like, like a free month, of course, like, like, why wouldn't
48:14SPEAKERthey give you a 30 day?
48:17SPEAKEREverybody does that.
48:18SPEAKERBut a year?
48:19SPEAKERApple, they're okay.
48:20SPEAKERThey're okay on cash.
48:21SPEAKERI know that, I know that, but I'm just trying to figure out like what the business play
48:24SPEAKERis there.
48:25SPEAKERThey want to get you hooked on it.
48:26SPEAKERI think, I think, so looking at their TV lineup, especially, I think that they don't have enough
48:31SPEAKERstuff to warrant the subscription starting in November and they're giving themselves
48:36SPEAKERa year to ramp that content up.
48:37SPEAKERBecause it's a, getting that content pipeline going is hard.
48:40SPEAKERIt's hard for Disney.
48:41SPEAKERIt's hard for Warner Brothers.
48:43SPEAKERIt's hard for everybody.
48:44SPEAKERMake sure by the end of the year, it's indispensable.
48:46SPEAKERYeah.
48:47SPEAKERThat gives them a year to, to, to have a hit that people can't stop watching.
48:50SPEAKERWe'll see.
48:52SPEAKERNo Apple TV update?
48:53SPEAKERNo Apple TV.
48:54SPEAKERI don't think they need one.
48:55SPEAKER4k?
48:56SPEAKER4k is good.
48:57SPEAKERYeah.
48:58SPEAKERI mean, the big thing, the big thing on Apple TV and iOS for games is that they're going
49:03SPEAKERto have, uh, if you have a Bluetooth DualShock or Bluetooth, Xbox controller, that's huge.
49:08SPEAKERThen all DualShock 4 is the second wave of, of, uh, Xbox controllers.
49:13SPEAKERHere's the flip side of things that Steve Jobs would never have allowed is that for
49:18SPEAKERonce they did something good.
49:19SPEAKERI mean, I think, like, I think this is unequivocally good.
49:21SPEAKERIt is.
49:22SPEAKERThat's yeah.
49:23SPEAKERI'm just saying like, this is very on Apple to allow other companies peripherals to, you
49:27SPEAKERknow what I mean?
49:28SPEAKERYeah.
49:29SPEAKERWithout like licensing or something.
49:30SPEAKERIt's not like there've been, there've been the rumors for years about Apple having a
49:31SPEAKERcontroller in development.
49:32SPEAKERAnd there's been the MFi stuff, which never really got off the ground.
49:36SPEAKERSo I have one of those SteelSeries MFi controllers, which is fine.
49:42SPEAKERBut for console ports, it doesn't work because the sticks, the MFi sticks don't have to click.
49:47SPEAKERSo that means you end up in a weird situation where you're like doing corded presses and
49:50SPEAKERalso like SteelSeries controller is fine, but it's not as good as, you know, Microsoft
49:54SPEAKERand Sony put billions of dollars into developing those controllers over the years.
49:58SPEAKEROn top of everything else, you just don't want to buy more controllers if you don't
50:00SPEAKERhave to.
50:01SPEAKERWell, it's a pain in the ass to switch back and forth though, because you have to sync
50:04SPEAKERit every time.
50:05SPEAKERAnd it's like, it's not ideal, but yeah, like I have enough PlayStation controllers floating
50:09SPEAKERaround that I'll sacrifice one to the, to the Apple TV.
50:12SPEAKERNo problem.
50:13SPEAKERTotally.
50:14SPEAKERSo yeah, this is all happening.
50:16SPEAKERPre-orders have started for some of this stuff.
50:18SPEAKERYou can order an Apple watch now.
50:21SPEAKEROne thing that we didn't talk about, they finally fixed the config.
50:23SPEAKERThey may have done this before.
50:24SPEAKERIt's the first time I've looked at it in a while, but they have a configurator now that
50:27SPEAKERlets you pick the size you want, and then you pick the finish you want, and then you
50:31SPEAKERpick the band that you want.
50:32SPEAKEROn the watch?
50:33SPEAKEROn the watch.
50:34SPEAKERYeah.
50:35SPEAKERSo you don't have to like, like if you want a black watch with a white band, you used
50:39SPEAKERto have to buy the white band after you bought the black watch with another band that you
50:43SPEAKERdon't want.
50:44SPEAKERThat's terrible.
50:45SPEAKERYeah.
50:46SPEAKERSo it's a better consumer experience, I guess.
50:47SPEAKERYeah.
50:48SPEAKERThat's it.
50:49SPEAKERA minor thing.
50:50SPEAKERNone of this stuff seems super necessary.
50:51SPEAKERYeah.
50:52SPEAKERI was going to say like, I don't know, put a grade on today's event.
50:53SPEAKERLet's say like a B, a B minus.
50:55SPEAKERI think they had the most diverse group of people that I've ever seen on a stage.
50:59SPEAKEROh, okay.
51:00SPEAKERWell, I didn't actually see the stage show.
51:01SPEAKERI didn't think about their kind of stage craft.
51:03SPEAKERI just meant the product offering.
51:05SPEAKERIf we're talking about like the actual show, they did a really good job.
51:08SPEAKERIt was a pretty good show.
51:10SPEAKERThey're doing this thing that I really like at the end where instead of just having big
51:12SPEAKERbullet lists full of features and stuff, they do a, it looks like one of those listicle
51:18SPEAKERthings that people always are emailing to you to be like, "Hey, do you want to, here's
51:22SPEAKERa free listicle that you can put on your site?"
51:25SPEAKERAnd like, it's just got all the relevant information and a pleasant infographic.
51:30SPEAKERBig snazzy infographic.
51:31SPEAKERYeah.
51:32SPEAKERIt was, then they did this for all of the stuff.
51:33SPEAKERIt was pretty good.
51:34SPEAKERThat's helpful.
51:35SPEAKERYeah.
51:36SPEAKERLike there's a couple more.
51:37SPEAKERYou can see them.
51:38SPEAKEROkay.
51:39SPEAKERLike, so that's a good, at a glance, here's what's new.
51:40SPEAKERYeah.
51:41SPEAKERLike they, and they have ABs.
51:42SPEAKERI mean, obviously they're a little bit cooked on like what the wide camera versus the ultra
51:46SPEAKERwide lens looks like and stuff like that, but it was, it was pretty good.
51:49SPEAKERYeah.
51:50SPEAKERIn terms of the products, like these are, if you, if you're, if you have a, like I have
51:57SPEAKERa two, this is the first time I've ever had a two year old phone since smartphones became
52:00SPEAKERa thing.
52:01SPEAKERReally?
52:02SPEAKERWell, I was, I was reviewing every year.
52:03SPEAKEROh fair.
52:04SPEAKERI had to, I was.
52:05SPEAKERYou came into a lot of phones.
52:07SPEAKERPhones were never, which phone was I going to have?
52:09SPEAKERNever a problem.
52:10SPEAKERPhones were available to you.
52:11SPEAKERIn fact, I think, I think I even had a phone for a couple of years due to your largess.
52:16SPEAKERI grabbed one out of the closet and was like, when your phone was broken and embarrassing,
52:19SPEAKERI was like, dude, here you go.
52:20SPEAKERYou need a phone that works.
52:21SPEAKERTake this Windows phone.
52:22SPEAKERAnd I was like, oh, this thing's not so bad.
52:23SPEAKEROh man.
52:24SPEAKERI didn't give you a Windows phone.
52:25SPEAKERI'm sorry.
52:26SPEAKERYou did.
52:27SPEAKERUm, I think you, I think I gave you the choice between that and an Android phone.
52:29SPEAKERYou chose the Windows phone.
52:30SPEAKERI can't remember how that went.
52:31SPEAKERUh, the Android phones at that time, you made the right choice.
52:33SPEAKERWas I able to get achievements on that Android phone?
52:35SPEAKERYes.
52:36SPEAKERNo.
52:37SPEAKERThat's the thing.
52:38SPEAKERYou wanted the phone that you could get hex and achievements on.
52:39SPEAKERThat's right.
52:40SPEAKEROr, uh, hex and achievements on.
52:41SPEAKERAnd I did.
52:42SPEAKERI, I feel like, um, if this is firmly in the category of, if you need a new phone cause
52:49SPEAKERyou just dropped in the Lake or something, like the it's worth buying the new one.
52:54SPEAKERUnless you're, unless you're poor, one of the poor God forsaken individuals who prefers
52:58SPEAKERthe iPhone SE.
52:59SPEAKERGood luck.
53:00SPEAKERYou are still the same shit out of luck.
53:02SPEAKERStill there.
53:03SPEAKERThey're still making it.
53:04SPEAKERLike, I mean, I'm sitting here holding an iPhone eight and they don't even make a phone
53:06SPEAKERthat small anymore.
53:08SPEAKERMuch less the SE.
53:09SPEAKERNo, they're still selling the eight.
53:10SPEAKERNo, no.
53:11SPEAKERI'm saying they're, they don't make new phones in that form factor, even, even the 10 smaller
53:14SPEAKERthan the eight.
53:15SPEAKERNo, it's not.
53:16SPEAKERIt's about the same size.
53:17SPEAKERLook at that.
53:18SPEAKERI have a case on mine.
53:20SPEAKERThis is some great.
53:21SPEAKERSo do I.
53:22SPEAKEROh yeah.
53:23SPEAKERIt is a little bit smaller.
53:24SPEAKERIt's like a phone for babies.
53:25SPEAKERThe phones are just getting bigger is what I'm saying.
53:26SPEAKERYeah.
53:27SPEAKERLike there's, you know, there's people that still prefer that.
53:29SPEAKERWhat is it?
53:30SPEAKERThe SE is four inches, I think.
53:31SPEAKERFour inch screen.
53:32SPEAKERSomething like that.
53:33SPEAKERThis is why we need the jenco jeans.
53:34SPEAKERLike to come back.
53:35SPEAKERWe need the big pockets.
53:36SPEAKERI just want a reasonably sized phone.
53:38SPEAKERThat's all I'm asking.
53:39SPEAKERYou have a reasonably sized phone.
53:40SPEAKERI know.
53:41SPEAKERI know.
53:42SPEAKERBut there, but once, once this thing gets too slow.
53:43SPEAKERDo you have a case on that?
53:44SPEAKERYes.
53:45SPEAKEROkay.
53:46SPEAKERIt's very small.
53:47SPEAKERNot in this thinnest case.
53:48SPEAKERDoes it actually do impact damage or just scratch?
53:50SPEAKERNot really.
53:51SPEAKEROkay.
53:52SPEAKERIt's just, just for scratches.
53:53SPEAKEROkay.
53:54SPEAKERVery good.
53:55SPEAKERI'm very particular about my phone wants and needs.
53:56SPEAKERBrad, you're very particular about what if, if one day, if we, so far we've recorded two
54:00SPEAKERepisodes zeros.
54:01SPEAKERIf we release the first one at some point as like a bonus or something, or when we,
54:05SPEAKERwe can't record an episode, we're going to find out how particular you are about things.
54:09SPEAKERPeople are going to hear the deaths of my insanity as pertains to buying a new monitor.
54:13SPEAKERTell me about the monitors.
54:14SPEAKERI was not buying a new monitor for 15 years.
54:18SPEAKERTell me of the monitors.
54:19SPEAKERThey still work.
54:20SPEAKERUm, so that's it.
54:21SPEAKERI guess.
54:22SPEAKERI guess.
54:23SPEAKERYeah.
54:24SPEAKERUm, we're, we're going to do this every week.
54:26SPEAKERThat's the goal.
54:27SPEAKERI think.
54:28SPEAKERI mean, I don't know.
54:29SPEAKERIt sounds terrifying.
54:30SPEAKERWell, I mean, maybe we won't.
54:31SPEAKERWe'll see.
54:32SPEAKERI'm up for it.
54:33SPEAKERBut if you like it, if you like the podcast, I I'm told that putting reviews on iTunes
54:36SPEAKERhelps.
54:37SPEAKEROkay.
54:38SPEAKERSo that would be an awesome thing for you to do.
54:39SPEAKERDo that.
54:40SPEAKERI was, I didn't mean you.
54:41SPEAKERI mean, that would be weird if you and I reviewed the podcast.
54:42SPEAKERI'll just use different names.
54:43SPEAKERI don't know what people, they always find out.
54:45SPEAKERNobody will know.
54:46SPEAKERNo, no, no, no.
54:47SPEAKERDon't do that.
54:48SPEAKERIt's frowned upon.
54:49SPEAKERUm, but yeah, uh, you can find us on all the places that you find podcasts and we would
54:51SPEAKERlike it if you would mash the, the, the review button.
54:54SPEAKERThat would be swell.
54:55SPEAKERLike and subscribe.
54:56SPEAKERYeah.
54:57SPEAKERThat's what the kids say.
54:58SPEAKERI'll let you do that part.
54:59SPEAKERBut like and subscribe.
55:00SPEAKERYeah.
55:01SPEAKEROkay.
55:02SPEAKERThank you.
55:03SPEAKERSee y'all next week.
55:13SPEAKER[Inaudible]
