00:00SPEAKERI made five gallons of eggnog yesterday, Brad.
00:02SPEAKERYour digestive health must be stronger than I thought.
00:06SPEAKERWell, OK.
00:07SPEAKERSo look, some things happen when you
00:10SPEAKERpost a picture of a 20 gallon cambro full of eggnog.
00:14SPEAKERI'm sorry.
00:15SPEAKERIt's nog day.
00:16SPEAKERA 20 gallon what?
00:17SPEAKERCambro, it's like a restaurant prep bucket.
00:22SPEAKERIt's a big square bucket.
00:23SPEAKERIt's clear, and it has markings on the side.
00:25SPEAKERI can visualize it.
00:27SPEAKERI've never heard the term cambro.
00:28SPEAKERI will say spending a fair amount of time
00:31SPEAKERon TikTok term cambro seems like it could mean something
00:35SPEAKERvery different.
00:36SPEAKERBut go on.
00:36SPEAKERNo, it's not-- look, I haven't been learning dances.
00:40SPEAKERIt is-- yeah, it's just a big--
00:43SPEAKERit's like a restaurant supply bucket, basically.
00:46SPEAKERIt's like-- it's got a lid.
00:48SPEAKERIt's got-- it's made of Lexan, and it's like sterile
00:51SPEAKERso you can cook food and prepare food.
00:53SPEAKERI'm sorry.
00:53SPEAKERIt's made of what?
00:54SPEAKERI'm just going to keep asking you about all the terms.
00:56SPEAKERLike Lexan.
00:56SPEAKERIt's like Lexan, like a special kind of acrylic,
01:00SPEAKERlike polycarb acrylic.
01:01SPEAKERIt's like a hard plastic.
01:03SPEAKERDo you feel great buying professional grade stuff?
01:06SPEAKERLike, obviously, there's plenty of home-tier cooking stuff
01:09SPEAKERthat you can get, but if it's cooking implements or tools
01:13SPEAKERor you name it, if you go out and get the thing
01:15SPEAKERthat the professionals use, do you feel like you've ascended?
01:19SPEAKERI mean, sometimes I bought this just
01:20SPEAKERbecause it's nice to make one big batch
01:22SPEAKERand then dole it out instead of making three small batches.
01:25SPEAKERThat means it takes like a third the time to do the work.
01:28SPEAKERSo you're sous-viding, right?
01:30SPEAKERYeah, so it's like, look, eggnog,
01:33SPEAKERyou don't have to cook, right?
01:35SPEAKERWhen I cook the eggnog, it's just
01:36SPEAKERto pasteurize it so that the bad toxins that make salmonella
01:39SPEAKERand make everybody really sick don't live in the nog.
01:43SPEAKERI mean, look, if you use enough booze,
01:45SPEAKERyou don't have to cook anything.
01:46SPEAKERWell, see, you say that, but it's
01:47SPEAKERthe poison that makes you sick, not the critters.
01:49SPEAKERSo it's one of those.
01:50SPEAKERYeah, it's eating the critter poop is the bad thing.
01:53SPEAKERIt's the poop, not the critters, yes.
01:55SPEAKERYeah, so you mix it all up, stir it all up real good.
01:59SPEAKERHopefully, I did a good job stirring.
02:01SPEAKERThe one place I realized I didn't under-calculate,
02:03SPEAKER'cause this is the first year I've had the big camera.
02:05SPEAKERI did it in two smaller vats last year.
02:07SPEAKERAnd well, look, I didn't have a spoon big enough,
02:12SPEAKERso I put a rubber glove on that went up
02:13SPEAKERabout midway up my forearm and then just jammed
02:15SPEAKERmy whole arm down in there to stir.
02:17SPEAKERLike a cow stomach.
02:18SPEAKERIt was kind of like doing cow proctology.
02:22SPEAKERBut the upshot is the nog is pretty good,
02:26SPEAKERfrom what I can tell.
02:28SPEAKERAnd it only took three batches to do the full pasteurization,
02:35SPEAKERwhich was nice, as opposed to taking all day, usually.
02:39SPEAKERAnd I did it all in one big, giant batch.
02:41SPEAKERThis is gonna be a very ignorant question.
02:42SPEAKERAre you pasteurizing with the sous vide?
02:44SPEAKERYeah, so you pasteurize with the sous vide.
02:45SPEAKERSo in terms of killing bacteria,
02:48SPEAKERthere's a bunch of different ways to kill bacteria.
02:50SPEAKERIf you're talking about making, say, a piece of chicken
02:53SPEAKERsafe to eat, the FDA says get it up to 165 degrees
02:56SPEAKERor something, right?
02:57SPEAKERAnd they give you that temperature
02:59SPEAKERbecause that's the temperature at which instantaneous contact
03:02SPEAKERwith bacteria at that temperature will pop the cell walls
03:06SPEAKERof the bacteria and it will die.
03:08SPEAKERNo, no, no, this is a good thing.
03:09SPEAKER- I know it's a good thing, but just the visual of like,
03:13SPEAKERyou're making your food safe to eat by spilling the guts
03:16SPEAKERof all the bad critters.
03:17SPEAKERIt's still in there.
03:18SPEAKERIt's just inert.
03:20SPEAKER- Oh, yeah.
03:20SPEAKERI mean, look, look, this is, look,
03:24SPEAKEReverybody should take microbiology.
03:25SPEAKER- I was literally just about to say,
03:26SPEAKERthe less I think about microbiology,
03:28SPEAKERthe more I will enjoy life.
03:30SPEAKERLet's just keep going.
03:31SPEAKER- No, just like knowing about microbiology just means
03:33SPEAKERyou don't have to be afraid of anything anymore
03:35SPEAKER'cause you know what's actually bad
03:36SPEAKERversus what you think is bad.
03:38SPEAKERSo, okay, so you pop the bacteria.
03:42SPEAKERYou can also do it by doing a lower heat
03:44SPEAKERover a long period of time,
03:45SPEAKERwhich is kind of what pasteurization is.
03:47SPEAKEROr you can do pressure.
03:48SPEAKERPressure is hard to do at home, it turns out.
03:50SPEAKERBut so you do like 162 Fahrenheit,
03:53SPEAKERwhich is high enough heat to break down for 90 minutes,
03:58SPEAKERhigh enough heat to kill all of the salmonella
04:01SPEAKERand all that stuff.
04:02SPEAKERAnd it also does a little bit of cooking on the eggs
04:04SPEAKERand the milk and stuff and helps the nutmeg and cloves
04:07SPEAKERkind of leach out of the spices
04:08SPEAKERand into the milk and egg.
04:11SPEAKER- I was gonna say, as I have investigated Nog recipes
04:14SPEAKERafter taking a cue from you last year,
04:17SPEAKERmost of them mentioned that you will probably end up
04:19SPEAKERwith some cooked floaty egg bits in there
04:21SPEAKERthat you have to strain out.
04:22SPEAKERDid you, what was your egg bit situation?
04:26SPEAKER- Look, you always strain.
04:27SPEAKEROne year I didn't strain, it was a mistake.
04:28SPEAKERI had to tell everybody to strain their Nog.
04:30SPEAKER- Ugh, okay, follow-up question.
04:33SPEAKER- Yeah.
04:34SPEAKER- After you strain, do you eat the egg?
04:37SPEAKER- Ugh, gross, no.
04:38SPEAKER'Cause like what gets strained out
04:39SPEAKERis like little bits of, little tiny, tiny, small,
04:43SPEAKER'cause I use a fine mesh sieve,
04:45SPEAKERreally, really small bits of like egg yolk.
04:47SPEAKER- And then like little bits of nutmeg
04:49SPEAKERthat were too big to go through the sieve.
04:51SPEAKERIt's not gonna be tasty.
04:52SPEAKER- Nutmeg, I'm trying to, that's not working.
04:54SPEAKER- Look, I grabbed 24 grams of nutmeg yesterday.
04:57SPEAKERThat's like seven nuts.
04:59SPEAKER- Egg, nutmeg, nutmeg, I'm trying to--
05:01SPEAKER- Nutmeg, egg.
05:02SPEAKER- Nutmeg, egg.
05:03SPEAKER- Egg, nutmeg.
05:04SPEAKER- This is not working.
05:05SPEAKER- Yeah, anyway, but then the bummer is I can't eat the Nog
05:09SPEAKERbecause I'm having some stomach situation.
05:10SPEAKER- Oh no, oh no.
05:12SPEAKER- That I'm supposed to stay away from fatty stuff
05:13SPEAKERand spicy stuff and--
05:14SPEAKER- Oh no.
05:15SPEAKER- Yeah, right.
05:16SPEAKER- What is there, what's left?
05:18SPEAKER- She said no booze either.
05:19SPEAKERThat doesn't affect me all that much,
05:20SPEAKERbut yeah, it's a dark time.
05:23SPEAKERI mean, look, maybe I'll lose 10 pounds this holiday
05:25SPEAKERand just gain 10 pounds this holiday.
05:27SPEAKER- Well, happy holidays to you.
05:29SPEAKER(upbeat music)
05:36SPEAKERYou know, I have to apologize.
05:37SPEAKERI haven't seen your face in at least two weeks.
05:39SPEAKERProbably pushing three.
05:41SPEAKER- It's been a while.
05:42SPEAKER- There's something different about you
05:43SPEAKERand I hadn't picked up on it for a second.
05:45SPEAKER- And not just because Nvidia broadcast
05:47SPEAKERkeeps removing your hair from the frame.
05:50SPEAKER- It's, look, it's removing my antlers.
05:52SPEAKER- My antlers are just like.
05:53SPEAKER- They have, look, Nvidia broadcast doesn't know
05:55SPEAKERwhat to do with somebody who zip ties a bunch of antlers
05:57SPEAKERonto their headphones.
05:59SPEAKER- I have to, I really admire that level
06:01SPEAKERof festive dedication to be clear.
06:04SPEAKER- People look forward to it now.
06:06SPEAKERLike the Twitch stream, I didn't have them on
06:08SPEAKER'cause I hadn't, we didn't do Christmas decorations
06:10SPEAKERbefore we went away for Gina's birthday.
06:12SPEAKERAnd people were like, hey, where are the antlers, man?
06:15SPEAKEROh, I gotta get the antlers out.
06:17SPEAKER- If you've built expectation, you're doing something right.
06:19SPEAKER- I know, it's a holiday tradition now.
06:22SPEAKER- I was very fond of getting my sad Charlie Brown
06:25SPEAKERChristmas tree out every year
06:27SPEAKERand bringing it to the office, that was.
06:29SPEAKER- I love the sad Charlie Brown Christmas tree.
06:31SPEAKER- Yeah, it's good stuff.
06:32SPEAKERAnyway.
06:33SPEAKER- But I got my hair cut for the first time since last June.
06:36SPEAKER- You were like, so I saw you very briefly
06:38SPEAKERright around Thanksgiving.
06:39SPEAKER- Yeah.
06:40SPEAKER- And had forgotten that your hair,
06:42SPEAKERI think you're the only person who rivals the hair growth
06:44SPEAKERthat I have experienced over the last 18 months
06:46SPEAKERof no haircuts.
06:47SPEAKER- I mean, look, I figured if I was gonna live like a hermit,
06:50SPEAKERI might as well look like a hermit.
06:51SPEAKER- Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at,
06:53SPEAKERexcept then if you suddenly go travel
06:56SPEAKERto where a bunch of family is that you haven't seen
06:58SPEAKERfor two to three years.
06:59SPEAKER- Oh yeah, how'd that go?
07:00SPEAKER- And they're all like, why, why, why?
07:04SPEAKER- Did you get called a long hair?
07:05SPEAKER- It was pretty, no, no.
07:08SPEAKER'Cause unlike you, I did not get a haircut.
07:09SPEAKERInstead, I finally just forced myself to learn
07:12SPEAKERhow to do a proper bun.
07:13SPEAKER- On top or on back?
07:15SPEAKER- Either or, that's really that part is,
07:17SPEAKERthat's just a fine detail that really,
07:19SPEAKERthe technique is the same.
07:21SPEAKERIt's really just how high you hold it when you tie it.
07:23SPEAKER- So I did that for a long time.
07:24SPEAKERYou do the twist and then you wrap it around
07:26SPEAKERand then you jam the end through the middle, right?
07:28SPEAKER- Yes, I consulted quite a few people I know
07:31SPEAKERwho would know how to tie a good bun.
07:33SPEAKER- You didn't just go to YouTube
07:34SPEAKERand look up the bun influencers?
07:37SPEAKER- In fact, let's say there's a younger 12 year old girl
07:40SPEAKERin the family that shows up to the family gathering.
07:43SPEAKERIt's like a fun topic of converse.
07:44SPEAKERIt's like a good conversation starter to be like,
07:46SPEAKERhey, help me master my bun technique.
07:48SPEAKERI'm just gonna let my ridiculous hair down
07:50SPEAKERand critique what I'm doing here.
07:52SPEAKERTell me how I can improve.
07:54SPEAKER- 12 year old girl's very good at long hair, it turns out.
07:56SPEAKER- Yes, yes.
07:57SPEAKEROh man, we had talked about doing a braid
07:59SPEAKERbefore the day it was over, but didn't know.
08:01SPEAKER- Oh, you didn't get there?
08:02SPEAKER- No, I get around to it.
08:03SPEAKER- Do you know if you could do Princess Leia ears?
08:05SPEAKER- No, it's kind of like,
08:07SPEAKERit's a good few inches past shoulder length at this point,
08:12SPEAKERbut I don't think that's quite enough.
08:13SPEAKER- I expect to save a lot of money on conditioner and shampoo.
08:16SPEAKERI'm not gonna lie.
08:17SPEAKER- Yeah, that man.
08:18SPEAKEROh gosh, let's not even get into.
08:20SPEAKER- It's like three, four pumps, man.
08:22SPEAKERIt's a lot.
08:23SPEAKER- Not only that, but when you have hair like this,
08:25SPEAKERthe level of hair loss that occurs when you wash.
08:27SPEAKER- Oh, it's horrifying.
08:28SPEAKER- Is frightening.
08:29SPEAKER- Yeah.
08:30SPEAKER- It's like multiple giant hair balls.
08:32SPEAKERIt was enough to make me think
08:33SPEAKERthat I was just instantly going bald.
08:35SPEAKERI was like, well, that's it for my hair, I guess, but.
08:38SPEAKER- Well, there were like three things
08:40SPEAKERthat convinced me it was time.
08:41SPEAKEROne is that the woman who's cut my hair
08:43SPEAKERfor the last 21 years was in town.
08:45SPEAKERShe doesn't live here anymore,
08:46SPEAKERbut she comes back occasionally to cut people's hair.
08:48SPEAKER- Just one more haircut for old time's sake.
08:51SPEAKER- Yeah, like, look, at the rate I'm going,
08:52SPEAKERif she comes every six months, I'm probably good.
08:54SPEAKER- Sure.
08:56SPEAKER- But then I was in the shower
08:59SPEAKERand I was like doing the conditioning.
09:00SPEAKERI was getting the tangles out and I looked forward
09:01SPEAKERand I was like, man, there's a lot of hair over here
09:04SPEAKERand a lot of hair over the other side.
09:05SPEAKERLike the sides, it's real thick
09:07SPEAKERand you can't see through the hair to see the outside world.
09:09SPEAKERBut on the front, it's like a beaded curtain.
09:12SPEAKERIt was a little bit, it was noticeably thinner.
09:15SPEAKERSo then I just started taking pictures
09:17SPEAKERat the back of my head and I was like, oh crap,
09:19SPEAKERI look like a bald guy with long hair.
09:21SPEAKERThat's not good.
09:22SPEAKER- That's the worst possible.
09:23SPEAKER- No, I don't want that.
09:26SPEAKERNobody wants that, it's a bad look.
09:28SPEAKER- Party in the back and nothing in the front.
09:30SPEAKER- Look, man, I was party all over, but yeah.
09:33SPEAKERSo the consensus we came to was that if I had had more hair
09:39SPEAKERon top, that I could do that Keanu length pretty good.
09:43SPEAKERBut without the hair on top, it's just sad.
09:45SPEAKERSo she just lopped it all off, like three swipes.
09:48SPEAKERNo mercy, no fanfare.
09:50SPEAKERI expected a medal, frankly, Brad, nothing.
09:55SPEAKER- Did you donate the hair?
09:57SPEAKER- It wasn't long enough.
09:58SPEAKER- Oh, is there actually a cutoff?
09:59SPEAKERIs there a, this is not enough?
10:00SPEAKER- Yeah, they want a fair, they want more than I was,
10:02SPEAKERI would have had to go probably another nine months
10:04SPEAKERto get to the length where the hair people would take it.
10:07SPEAKERAnd frankly, my plumbing can't take that much more hair.
10:10SPEAKER- Well, that's the thing.
10:11SPEAKERI've been just removing multiple hair balls
10:13SPEAKERfrom the shower every time I wash my hair now.
10:15SPEAKERLike I make sure that doesn't go down the drain,
10:17SPEAKER'cause that's no good.
10:18SPEAKER- If I don't pull the ball,
10:21SPEAKERif I didn't pull the hair balls out
10:22SPEAKERbefore I got out of the shower, then it would just not drain.
10:26SPEAKERBut do you know about the rubber, the plastic zip tie,
10:30SPEAKERthey're like zip tie clogged yankers?
10:32SPEAKER- Oh.
10:33SPEAKER- It's like a plastic snake.
10:34SPEAKERThey make them in sink and tub lengths, they're awesome.
10:37SPEAKERSo it's like, it looks like a zip tie thing.
10:40SPEAKERIt's like about an inch, half an inch wide with a handle
10:43SPEAKERand it has teeth that like, you know, it's like barbed.
10:47SPEAKERSo like it's pointy on the way that you shove it in
10:49SPEAKERand then it opens wide on the way back.
10:50SPEAKERSo when you yank it back, it grabs all the gross shit.
10:53SPEAKER- It's like a bee stinger.
10:54SPEAKER- Yeah, pretty much.
10:55SPEAKERYeah, but for like leftover human refuse
10:57SPEAKERthat goes down the drain.
10:58SPEAKER- Look, I mean, we've all had to make a lot of changes
11:02SPEAKERand adapt to a lot of things over the last year and a half.
11:04SPEAKERBut if you're willing to dredge up whatever it is
11:07SPEAKERthat is clogging up your drain and bring it back up,
11:10SPEAKERyou are a braver man than I am.
11:11SPEAKER(upbeat music)
11:18SPEAKER- Brad, do you have any favorite holiday traditions?
11:21SPEAKER- Hmm.
11:23SPEAKER- Like, you know, sit down in front of the tree,
11:25SPEAKERget a roaring fire, pop up with a glass of Nog
11:28SPEAKERand a little splash of bourbon.
11:29SPEAKER- Weight gain?
11:30SPEAKER- It was probably.
11:31SPEAKER- Okay, okay.
11:32SPEAKER- My favorite.
11:33SPEAKER- Actually, well, most and least favorite, actually.
11:36SPEAKER- Look, there's ups and downs.
11:38SPEAKEROn one side, none of your pants fit.
11:39SPEAKEROn the plus side, all of your elastic pants still fit.
11:42SPEAKER- That's true.
11:43SPEAKERAlso, there's something to be said
11:44SPEAKERfor a certain level of abandon, you know?
11:47SPEAKERJust saying screw it.
11:49SPEAKER- Yeah, like things aren't getting easier from this point on.
11:52SPEAKER- Yeah, snow.
11:53SPEAKERAnyway, how about you?
11:55SPEAKER- You know, we like to sit down, you know,
11:58SPEAKERafter the tree is decorated,
11:59SPEAKERturn off all the lights in the living room,
12:00SPEAKERturn on the festive lights.
12:02SPEAKERYou know, maybe you have a fire, I don't know.
12:04SPEAKERSometimes not.
12:05SPEAKERAnd then watch some classic Christmas television.
12:08SPEAKER- Yeah, actually, now that you mention it,
12:10SPEAKERyeah, I've been thinking about,
12:11SPEAKERI've been feeling weirdly nostalgic
12:13SPEAKERfor Christmas programming from before I was born.
12:15SPEAKER- Yeah, like a Grinch,
12:17SPEAKERlike the animated one with Boris Karloff is always good.
12:21SPEAKER- I thought about the Grinch as a good one.
12:22SPEAKERI should look for that.
12:23SPEAKERIt's a Wonderful Life has been in conversation recently.
12:26SPEAKER- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,
12:27SPEAKERreal banger with Burl Ives.
12:29SPEAKERDo you know, I was reading that like, first of all,
12:33SPEAKERit's Wonderful Life was not a hit on release.
12:35SPEAKER- No.
12:36SPEAKER- Like it was kind of a flop, but further,
12:38SPEAKERapparently a large swath of the country,
12:41SPEAKERor at least the government,
12:42SPEAKERsaw it as potential communist propaganda.
12:45SPEAKER- Well, yeah, 'cause he was anti-banks.
12:47SPEAKER- Yes, yes.
12:48SPEAKERThe FBI apparently issued a memo warning
12:51SPEAKERabout the movie's potential subversive influence.
12:53SPEAKER- That would have been J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, I believe,
12:56SPEAKERright?
12:57SPEAKER- Yes, that was extremely Hoover-ific of them.
12:58SPEAKER- Yeah, so anyway, it's a fine film.
13:01SPEAKERI've only watched it once.
13:02SPEAKERI watched it in high school on a date one night
13:04SPEAKERand it was fine.
13:06SPEAKER- That's good, it is good, it's good.
13:08SPEAKERDo you know what else is good?
13:09SPEAKER- What else is good?
13:10SPEAKER- You know what is both one of the best specials
13:12SPEAKERand I would argue also unequivocally
13:14SPEAKERthe best Christmas album?
13:16SPEAKER- Oh, you're gonna talk about Bieber's Christmas album?
13:20SPEAKER- Yep, that's the one.
13:21SPEAKER- You got it, wow, boy.
13:22SPEAKER- Can't believe we pulled that one out.
13:23SPEAKER- We are of more like mind than I thought.
13:25SPEAKER- Let me tell you, his version of Little Drummer Boy
13:27SPEAKERis just a stone cold banger.
13:30SPEAKER- I'm actually talking about a Charlie Brown Christmas.
13:32SPEAKER- Oh, the Vince Guaraldi trio.
13:34SPEAKER- The Vince Guaraldi trio, Charlie Brown,
13:36SPEAKERthat is the quintessential Christmas album
13:38SPEAKERas far as I'm concerned.
13:39SPEAKERIf I could only have one, if I could have two,
13:42SPEAKERit's that and Christmas with Johnny Cash.
13:45SPEAKER- Oh, Christmas with Johnny Cash is pretty good.
13:47SPEAKER- It's pretty good.
13:49SPEAKER- So Charlie Brown Christmas is probably
13:51SPEAKERthe only Christmas album I've ever actually bought.
13:54SPEAKERLike I bought a CD of that at one point.
13:57SPEAKER- Extremely worth it.
13:58SPEAKER- And then by the time I was interested
13:59SPEAKERin listening to more Christmas music,
14:00SPEAKERI was like on a streaming service of some kind probably.
14:03SPEAKER- Yeah, that'll happen.
14:04SPEAKER- But we listened to that, we listened to She and Him,
14:08SPEAKERthe Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward, like, I don't know,
14:12SPEAKERit's like kinda '60s croonery bops, it's good.
14:17SPEAKERThe second one's not as good as the first one,
14:19SPEAKERbut the first one's pretty good.
14:20SPEAKER- I could get into that.
14:20SPEAKERDid you know, did you know?
14:23SPEAKER- Yes.
14:23SPEAKER- Did you know that Apple TV has taken permanent possession
14:27SPEAKERof a Charlie Brown Christmas?
14:29SPEAKER- Wait, I thought that was a CBS jam.
14:30SPEAKER- They acquired it.
14:32SPEAKERThe word acquired was used in the news story
14:35SPEAKERI read about this.
14:35SPEAKERThey acquired a Charlie Brown Christmas last year
14:38SPEAKERand now that's the only official way to watch it.
14:40SPEAKER- Do you think there's some horse trading going on there?
14:42SPEAKER- I don't know.
14:43SPEAKER- What did Disney have that CBS wanted?
14:46SPEAKERDo you think they got LL Cool J?
14:47SPEAKER- I wonder if they even owned it by the time Apple bought it.
14:50SPEAKERI wonder if it had already changed hands, maybe.
14:52SPEAKER- Like who owns, does Charles M. Schulz's estate own peanuts
14:55SPEAKERor does like Scripps own peanuts?
14:57SPEAKER- I don't know.
14:58SPEAKERWho owns peanuts?
15:01SPEAKER- I bet it's gonna say Mr. Planner.
15:02SPEAKER- Let's see, the company, Peanuts Worldwide,
15:05SPEAKERthe company that owns the rights to all things
15:06SPEAKERSnoopy, Charlie Brown, has three owners.
15:10SPEAKER- These three kids probably.
15:12SPEAKER- No, a company called Wild Brain,
15:14SPEAKERwhich is the majority owner, plus Sony Music
15:16SPEAKERand then the family of Charles Schulz, so.
15:19SPEAKER- Oh, that sounds like shareholders, huh?
15:21SPEAKER- Okay, yes, so it has been fully embraced
15:25SPEAKERby corporate interests.
15:26SPEAKER- Anyway, so this was just a straight,
15:28SPEAKERthe contract expired and Disney wrote the fat check
15:30SPEAKERto get the sad tree.
15:32SPEAKER- Something like that, but apparently
15:33SPEAKERwhen they bought it last year,
15:34SPEAKERthey made it available for free,
15:36SPEAKERwhich as far as I'm concerned is the right thing to do.
15:39SPEAKER- Yeah, it's a treasure, it belongs in the Smithsonian.
15:42SPEAKER- Well, no longer the case.
15:43SPEAKERApparently this year you have to pony up
15:45SPEAKERif you want the sad Christmas tree.
15:49SPEAKER- Hmm, can you buy it on Blu-ray and stuff still?
15:52SPEAKER- Ah, maybe, probably, you know,
15:54SPEAKERthere's probably a lot of things you can do.
15:56SPEAKER(laughing)
15:57SPEAKER- Okay, I feel like, man, that's harsh.
16:02SPEAKER- It is, right?
16:03SPEAKER- 'Cause that used to just be on TV for free.
16:07SPEAKERIt was on CBS.
16:08SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean-- - Every year.
16:09SPEAKER- Yeah, you know, they ran ads, it's the whole,
16:11SPEAKERyou're the product there, but I think another thing
16:15SPEAKERI was reading about "It's a Wonderful Life"
16:16SPEAKERis I think the copyright expired
16:17SPEAKERand that's why it started getting shown on TV so much.
16:20SPEAKER- Oh, yeah, it's been public domain.
16:21SPEAKERIt was for many, many years the example of public domain,
16:27SPEAKERlike mass market media that was in the public domain
16:29SPEAKERkind of by accident.
16:30SPEAKER- And kind of being a good thing, right?
16:32SPEAKERLike here is a now beloved thing
16:34SPEAKERthat has a pretty nice message to it
16:35SPEAKERthat has been seen by a lot more people.
16:39SPEAKER- Yeah, we talked briefly about doing a cartoon version
16:41SPEAKERof "It's a Wonderful Life" with Foo.
16:44SPEAKER- Oh, really?
16:44SPEAKER- And then much smarter people just were like,
16:47SPEAKERthat's a terrible idea, you shouldn't do that.
16:49SPEAKERPeople will just be upset and angry at you
16:51SPEAKERfor soiling this beloved classic.
16:54SPEAKER- Yes, from the standpoint of not messing with the classics,
16:57SPEAKERI think those people were quite wise.
16:59SPEAKER(upbeat music)
17:06SPEAKER- Okay, Brad.
17:07SPEAKER- Yes?
17:08SPEAKER- I got a thought experiment for you.
17:09SPEAKER- I love them, hit me.
17:11SPEAKER- Okay, so the year is 2021, it's December.
17:14SPEAKER- Wait a minute, I thought this was hypothetical.
17:16SPEAKER- You have been in a coma for 25 years, you wake up.
17:20SPEAKER- I mean, again, I thought this was supposed
17:21SPEAKERto be hypothetical.
17:22SPEAKER- No, look, look, look, look.
17:24SPEAKERPeople wake up from comas all the time.
17:27SPEAKERI'm gonna go and tell you this was made, this one,
17:31SPEAKERI saw a fake story on a bad satire site and was like, oh.
17:35SPEAKER- Wait, did they get you?
17:37SPEAKER- They got me.
17:38SPEAKER- Oh boy, it happens to the best of us.
17:40SPEAKER- Yeah, they did a bad job.
17:41SPEAKERLike it wasn't, nowhere was it labeled,
17:43SPEAKERlike it wasn't clear satire, it was just,
17:45SPEAKERit read like a real story.
17:47SPEAKER- You're saying there was no slash S
17:49SPEAKERat the end of the headline.
17:51SPEAKER- You don't need that.
17:52SPEAKEROkay, so once I wrote an editorial for maximumpc.com
17:56SPEAKERand I signed it Alexis Luthor A.
18:00SPEAKER- Lex Luthor.
18:01SPEAKER- And it was about, I don't remember, it was obvious satire
18:04SPEAKERand like eight people got it and I was like,
18:06SPEAKERoh really, that's an important lesson.
18:07SPEAKER- God, that's okay.
18:08SPEAKERWell, that puts some things in perspective
18:10SPEAKERbecause the proliferation of having to like fully delineate
18:15SPEAKERwhen you're being sarcastic on the internet,
18:16SPEAKERlike that whole thing, like the slash S.
18:18SPEAKERI mean, literally having to actually indicate,
18:20SPEAKERhey, this is sarcasm just endlessly depresses me.
18:23SPEAKERSo like, is this really where we're at
18:26SPEAKERwith interpersonal communication?
18:27SPEAKER- Yes, it is.
18:28SPEAKER- Apparently.
18:29SPEAKER- So anyway, I saw the fake story,
18:31SPEAKERbut I was like, man, if you woke up from a coma
18:33SPEAKERafter 25 years, which does occasionally happen, it's rare.
18:37SPEAKERImagine, like that means you went to sleep in 1990s,
18:41SPEAKERDecember of 1996.
18:43SPEAKER- '96, yes, okay.
18:44SPEAKER- So you, at that point,
18:46SPEAKERyou know that Bill Clinton is still the president.
18:49SPEAKER- Bill Clinton was just elected.
18:51SPEAKER- No, no, '92.
18:52SPEAKER- Bill Clinton is just reelected as president.
18:52SPEAKER- Yeah, that's what I mean, that's what I mean
18:54SPEAKERis that you know that you're in for another four years.
18:56SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah.
18:57SPEAKERI don't think, had the Lewinsky thing
18:58SPEAKERkicked off by that point?
18:59SPEAKERI don't think it had.
19:00SPEAKER- I don't think so.
19:01SPEAKER- That was ahead of you.
19:02SPEAKER- That was pretty late second term, yeah.
19:04SPEAKER- So like people talking about blow jobs on national TV
19:06SPEAKERhad never happened up until that point.
19:08SPEAKER- Cigars.
19:09SPEAKER- Yeah.
19:12SPEAKER- So think about that, like in 1996,
19:16SPEAKERI had, I probably, I had a personal computer, for sure.
19:20SPEAKER- Yeah, but you might not have known
19:21SPEAKERwhat USB was at that point.
19:23SPEAKER- USB would have been non-existent,
19:25SPEAKER'cause when USB wasn't really supported,
19:26SPEAKERlike you had ports but you couldn't use them for anything,
19:28SPEAKER'cause it didn't work on Windows 95.
19:29SPEAKER- I think, wasn't it?
19:30SPEAKER- OSR2.
19:31SPEAKER- OSR2 for '95 did support USB.
19:34SPEAKER- But not really though.
19:35SPEAKER- Most people needed 98.
19:37SPEAKER- Yeah, well there weren't any devices,
19:38SPEAKER'cause nobody, like you couldn't plug a printer or anything.
19:40SPEAKER- Yeah.
19:42SPEAKER- Yeah, like you probably didn't have broadband,
19:43SPEAKERyou probably hadn't been exposed to video on the internet.
19:46SPEAKER- Definitely, like '96 is when I got dial-up internet
19:49SPEAKERfor the first time, there was definitely
19:50SPEAKERalmost no broadband.
19:52SPEAKER- Yeah, audio, like if you were downloading audio files,
19:55SPEAKERthey were probably MIDI.
19:58SPEAKER- Yeah.
19:58SPEAKER- You might have, like that was right
20:00SPEAKERat the beginning of MP3 time.
20:01SPEAKER- Yes, you're right, I think '97 was the first I downloaded,
20:04SPEAKERmy first MP3 was an MP2.
20:06SPEAKER- Yeah, my first MP3 was an MP2 as well, yeah.
20:08SPEAKER- Also, I don't know why I started going down
20:10SPEAKERa Winamp rabbit hole.
20:11SPEAKER- We talked about Winamp on the show a couple of weeks ago.
20:13SPEAKER- Maybe that's what kicked it off,
20:14SPEAKERbut I don't know, and also like being exposed to the fact
20:17SPEAKERthat there are still a Winamp community out there.
20:21SPEAKERBut that-
20:22SPEAKER- People still make their skins?
20:23SPEAKER- That, probably, but that also led me to,
20:25SPEAKERwhat was the name of that Fraunhofer MP3 player,
20:28SPEAKERthe very first, it was literally the first piece
20:29SPEAKERof MP3 playing software ever made.
20:32SPEAKER- Oh.
20:33SPEAKER- It was like, oh gosh, what was it?
20:36SPEAKER- It wasn't just a codec?
20:38SPEAKER- No, no, no, it was an actual Windows application,
20:40SPEAKERI cannot remember- - Oh, I never used that.
20:42SPEAKERI think I always used-
20:43SPEAKER- That's what I used to play my first MP2.
20:45SPEAKERI wish I could remember what it was.
20:46SPEAKERIt was something from the radio.
20:47SPEAKER- I used Music Match Tukebox back then.
20:50SPEAKER- Let me just see here, I'm on the Winamp page.
20:53SPEAKERWell, we could follow up on this later.
20:54SPEAKERThat would actually, honestly, like-
20:56SPEAKER- History of MP3 is probably an interesting episode.
20:58SPEAKER- Yeah, a retrospective on early digital audio
21:01SPEAKERwould be super fun, but-
21:03SPEAKER- We know people who worked on some of the early,
21:05SPEAKERfirst paid streaming services too.
21:07SPEAKER- That's true, that's true.
21:08SPEAKERWe know a lot of people, it turns out.
21:10SPEAKERDigital cameras were not really a thing.
21:12SPEAKERI was reading, honestly, I hadn't randomly landed
21:16SPEAKERon a forum thread about obsolete technologies
21:18SPEAKERthe other day, so I've got a ton of these,
21:19SPEAKERbut I think very late '90s is when digital cameras
21:22SPEAKERwere really starting to come around,
21:23SPEAKERand there were those early Sony ones
21:25SPEAKERthat literally used floppy disks as a storage medium.
21:28SPEAKER- So I had work, we had a digital camera for work stuff
21:32SPEAKERto take pictures of things in '98 or '99.
21:36SPEAKER- Okay, so you've probably never seen a digital camera in '96?
21:40SPEAKER- No, and cell phones were still pretty rare.
21:44SPEAKERPeople had them, but it was doctors and realtors
21:47SPEAKERand people who don't work in, traveling salespeople,
21:49SPEAKERnot like your mom.
21:51SPEAKER- That was also the era of the bag phone,
21:53SPEAKERwhich is a phrase that I find endlessly entertaining.
21:55SPEAKER- I think '96 we probably had,
21:58SPEAKERI know that the StarTech came out around '96 or '97,
22:01SPEAKERand that was a kind of revolutionary moment for cell phones.
22:06SPEAKER- Yeah.
22:07SPEAKER- But one thing that I definitely had in the house then
22:10SPEAKERthat I don't have now is an electric can opener.
22:13SPEAKER- Whoa, wow, really?
22:14SPEAKER- Did you have an electric can opener when you were a kid?
22:15SPEAKER- Yes, we absolutely did.
22:16SPEAKER- Yeah, you put the cans on,
22:17SPEAKERyou hit the push a little button down and then it hangs there
22:20SPEAKERand you take it off.
22:21SPEAKER- It was a gigantic pain.
22:23SPEAKER- Oh really, I liked ours.
22:24SPEAKEROurs hung from the underside of the cabinet.
22:26SPEAKERYeah.
22:28SPEAKERSo we were making pumpkin pie over the holidays,
22:31SPEAKERand my daughter helps me make the pies as she does,
22:34SPEAKERand I was like, "Hey, go get the pumpkin pie
22:36SPEAKER"out of the thing, the pumpkin puree out of the closet.
22:39SPEAKER"Can you, you know, I need you to open the can."
22:43SPEAKERShe's like, "How do I open the can, Dad?"
22:46SPEAKERAnd I said, "And I realized that this is a moment
22:48SPEAKER"that's fraught with peril."
22:50SPEAKER- This is a teachable moment.
22:51SPEAKERThis is a historic moment in a child's life.
22:53SPEAKER- Yeah, I could, but also it's an opportunity
22:55SPEAKERfor me to completely cancel myself,
22:57SPEAKERit turns out, if I answer poorly.
23:00SPEAKERYou don't remember the Bean Dad?
23:02SPEAKER- Oh gosh, right, yes, wow.
23:05SPEAKER- It all starts the same way, Brad.
23:06SPEAKER- Oh no.
23:07SPEAKER- One bad misparenting misstep.
23:09SPEAKER- Oh wow, yes, no, this suddenly became very fraught.
23:12SPEAKER- So I told her to go get the can opener,
23:15SPEAKERand she came back with the juice, the lemon juicer first.
23:17SPEAKERI was like, "No, not that one,
23:18SPEAKER"the other one with the handle and the thing."
23:20SPEAKERShe's like, "Oh, okay."
23:21SPEAKERAnd then she tried it like five different ways,
23:23SPEAKERand she actually figured out the other way
23:25SPEAKERto use the can opener that nobody ever does,
23:27SPEAKERwhere you put the, where you hold it flat, horizontal,
23:30SPEAKERand you cut around the flat edge.
23:32SPEAKER- Oh, that's what we've got,
23:33SPEAKERthe one with the hand operated can opener we've got
23:36SPEAKERonly does that, I think, Al.
23:37SPEAKER- Oh, it just like pops the whole lid off?
23:42SPEAKER- It doesn't pierce into the edges of the lid,
23:44SPEAKERit literally just, yeah.
23:46SPEAKER- See ours pierces in, and it just makes the whole top
23:48SPEAKERincredibly razor sharp, and so it's just the inside edges.
23:51SPEAKER- Yeah.
23:51SPEAKER- But yeah, so then I showed her how to use it,
23:53SPEAKERand that was the end of that story.
23:55SPEAKER- Hey, teach your child to use a can opener,
23:57SPEAKERyou'll never open another can in your life.
23:59SPEAKER(upbeat music)
24:03SPEAKER- Okay, let's do some math here.
24:05SPEAKER- Okay.
24:06SPEAKER- I've had this Blue Yeti, well,
24:08SPEAKERthis is gonna be fuzzy math, to be fair.
24:10SPEAKER- Is this your microphone?
24:11SPEAKER- My everyday, my daily driver, my daily talker.
24:15SPEAKER- Okay, thousands of words have gone,
24:17SPEAKERmillions at this point.
24:18SPEAKER- Probably millions, probably millions,
24:20SPEAKERbut probably thousands of plug unplug cycles.
24:22SPEAKERI'm sure, okay, so again, fuzzy math, I.
24:25SPEAKER- Hold on, wait, why would you unplug and plug it
24:27SPEAKERa thousand times?
24:27SPEAKERYou plug your microphone in once,
24:29SPEAKERand then you just move it over when you plug it in.
24:31SPEAKERAnd then you just move it over when you wanna talk into it.
24:34SPEAKER- Hey, look, we've got, like there are personal habits,
24:36SPEAKERpersonal preferences here we can discuss.
24:39SPEAKERFirst, I wanna say it was 2014 when I got this thing,
24:42SPEAKERmaybe 2015, so six, seven years of use on this Yeti.
24:48SPEAKERHey, do you wanna know how you can make absolutely,
24:52SPEAKERpositively, 100% sure that your microphone isn't on?
24:58SPEAKER- Like do you back over it with your car a few times?
25:01SPEAKER- Would work on a permanent basis, yes.
25:04SPEAKERBut if you want to use the microphone again,
25:06SPEAKERyou could just pull the cable out.
25:08SPEAKER- But when the computer's off, the microphone won't work.
25:12SPEAKER- Well, like let's say the computer is on most of the time.
25:16SPEAKER- But then you're wasting a lot of electricity?
25:19SPEAKER- Look, I just, I'm a fairly paranoid person, okay.
25:22SPEAKER- Okay, okay.
25:23SPEAKER- It's the easiest way to make sure,
25:25SPEAKEReasiest way to make sure is to just unplug the camera
25:27SPEAKERand the microphone every time you're not using them.
25:29SPEAKER- Okay, that's fair.
25:30SPEAKERAnyway, you've put the fear of God in me at some point
25:33SPEAKERabout plugging and unplugging cables too much.
25:36SPEAKER- Yeah, I was gonna say, those have a duty cycle.
25:38SPEAKER- Like, is that actually rated?
25:40SPEAKERLike, is there a quantified failure rate on stuff like that?
25:43SPEAKER- Yeah, USB A duty cycle.
25:46SPEAKER- Yeah, so this is mini, or I guess mini, not micro, mini.
25:50SPEAKERThis is mini USB, is that A?
25:52SPEAKER- Is it mini?
25:53SPEAKER- Yeah.
25:53SPEAKER- Or is it the square one?
25:55SPEAKER- Yeah, it's the square, well, not exactly square,
25:57SPEAKERbut with a little kind of notch inside.
25:59SPEAKERIt's not mini, it's not the, I know what I mean.
26:00SPEAKER- It's not, yeah, it's big.
26:01SPEAKER- I'm sorry, it's not micro, it's not micro.
26:03SPEAKERIt's the one in between.
26:04SPEAKER- Oh, okay, so it's mini.
26:05SPEAKER- Mini, yes.
26:07SPEAKERMini USB.
26:08SPEAKERI've plugged and unplugged this thing,
26:10SPEAKERas many as probably three times a day for years on end.
26:17SPEAKER- Do I have a job?
26:18SPEAKER- Yeah, I'm not finding the duty cycle stuff
26:19SPEAKERon the testing for this.
26:20SPEAKERYou're like, I know that like HDMI ports
26:23SPEAKERare rated for several hundred.
26:24SPEAKER- That's it?
26:25SPEAKER- Usually.
26:26SPEAKER- That's crazy, I mean, we spent years
26:28SPEAKERmoving PlayStations and Xboxes around the office
26:32SPEAKERfrom place to place, plugging and unplugging constantly,
26:34SPEAKERand I don't think we ever broke an HDMI port.
26:37SPEAKER- So I've broken an HDMI port before.
26:40SPEAKERMy PS4 Pro, I had to send them 200 bucks
26:42SPEAKERto fix the HDMI port on it, 'cause that's, yeah.
26:44SPEAKER- I'm sure, I'm sure at that point
26:45SPEAKERthey just replaced the entire main board, right?
26:47SPEAKER- No, they put it, you know what, maybe they did.
26:49SPEAKERI don't know, I didn't open it up to see.
26:51SPEAKER- At that price, I bet that's exactly what that was.
26:53SPEAKER- It was basically 100 bucks for them to look at it
26:55SPEAKERand 100 bucks for them to fix it.
26:57SPEAKER- Oh, okay.
26:58SPEAKER- 'Cause it was out of warranty, but-
26:59SPEAKER- I'm almost surprised, well,
27:02SPEAKERI guess they don't expect people to break ports very often,
27:03SPEAKERbut I'm almost surprised ports aren't on
27:05SPEAKERlike some kind of easily replaced daughterboard
27:07SPEAKERand stuff like that.
27:08SPEAKER- I mean, look, this is the, it adds 10 cents
27:11SPEAKERto the overall cost of the machine.
27:12SPEAKERI'm sure it's way cheaper to put everything on one board.
27:15SPEAKER- It is way cheaper to put everything on a single board.
27:17SPEAKERLike that's why mice that have daughterboards
27:20SPEAKERthat go vertical and stuff like that
27:21SPEAKERare so much more expensive than just your book card
27:23SPEAKERand variety $20 flat mouse with the long pro buttons.
27:28SPEAKER- So yeah, my understanding is that almost everything,
27:32SPEAKERso like the end of the USB port
27:34SPEAKERthat plugs into the computer, the mini port,
27:36SPEAKERso having a mini port is probably a good thing.
27:38SPEAKERI thought the snowballs,
27:40SPEAKERwhich were famous for losing the USB ports
27:43SPEAKERdying on the blue snowballs,
27:45SPEAKERuse the old fat, you know, the A-
27:49SPEAKER- The full-sized-
27:50SPEAKER- The full-sized A connector, yeah.
27:52SPEAKER- USB, like what you think of as just USB, right?
27:54SPEAKER- It's not the rectangle one, it's the square one
27:56SPEAKERwith the notches out of the corners.
27:57SPEAKER- The square with the two, like two corners are-
28:00SPEAKER- Like you plug into a printer
28:02SPEAKERor like an external hard drive with a power brick.
28:04SPEAKER- There is a name for that.
28:05SPEAKERWhat is that? I forget.
28:06SPEAKER- It's the host side USB-A, I believe.
28:07SPEAKER- Is that what it is? Okay.
28:08SPEAKER- Yeah, it's sort of A.1 or something like that.
28:10SPEAKERBut it's the printer one, the TLDR.
28:17SPEAKERAnd I know that the normal A side
28:19SPEAKERthat everybody plugs into the back of their computers
28:21SPEAKERhas a high duty cycle,
28:24SPEAKERlike number of insertion-
28:25SPEAKER- God, I should hope so.
28:27SPEAKERThat's like the whole point of that port.
28:29SPEAKER- Yeah, same thing for the micro and minis.
28:33SPEAKERI don't know about the host side on the A, so.
28:36SPEAKER- Okay, all right.
28:37SPEAKERWell, maybe I'll breathe a little easier
28:38SPEAKERabout this microphone.
28:40SPEAKER- You might be okay.
28:41SPEAKER- Okay, at the same time,
28:43SPEAKERmaybe getting something better than the Yeti
28:44SPEAKERwould not be the worst thing in the world.
28:46SPEAKER- You do talk into a microphone professionally, Brad.
28:48SPEAKER- I do, maybe.
28:49SPEAKERAm I ready for XLR?
28:51SPEAKER- Look-
28:52SPEAKER- Am I ready?
28:53SPEAKER- I got the Motu, the mark of the unicorn earlier this year.
28:56SPEAKER- Yeah. - Rock solid.
28:57SPEAKERI love it.
28:58SPEAKER- I just want to own a product called Mark of the Unicorn,
29:01SPEAKERso maybe I'm in.
29:02SPEAKER- It's your time.
29:04SPEAKERYou deserve it.
29:05SPEAKER(upbeat music)
29:11SPEAKERBrad, what's air travel in the time of rona like?
29:14SPEAKER- Let's see here.
29:16SPEAKERTrying to think where to start.
29:18SPEAKERI did not see a single adult meltdown over mask mandates.
29:23SPEAKER- Well, that's probably good.
29:25SPEAKERKind of my first concern.
29:27SPEAKER- Okay.
29:27SPEAKER- I didn't see quite a few people
29:30SPEAKERobeying the letter of the law,
29:31SPEAKERbut absolutely not the spirit about mask wearing though.
29:34SPEAKERYou know what I mean?
29:34SPEAKER- A lot of noses.
29:35SPEAKER- Like more than that,
29:36SPEAKERlike quite a few just like chin strap masks, you know?
29:39SPEAKERIt's just like just hanging around the neck.
29:41SPEAKERIt's like, why are you even bothering at this point?
29:43SPEAKERCome on, come on.
29:47SPEAKERI went double mask.
29:49SPEAKER- Okay.
29:51SPEAKERLike Spiderman and then also an N95 underneath?
29:54SPEAKER- That's right, yes.
29:55SPEAKERNo, not quite.
29:57SPEAKERI mean, that would have been pretty good actually
29:58SPEAKERbut now that you mention it.
30:00SPEAKER- What about the duty if you went through TSA
30:01SPEAKERwearing like a Spiderman mask?
30:03SPEAKER- That's just point and laugh.
30:05SPEAKERI don't know.
30:06SPEAKERI went N95 and then like a disposable hospital cloth
30:09SPEAKERor not like paper.
30:10SPEAKER- Like a surgical mask?
30:11SPEAKER- Yeah, like surgical mask over top.
30:14SPEAKERBoy, wearing an N95 for, let's see,
30:17SPEAKERprobably about 11 hours yesterday,
30:19SPEAKERSir left my face looking interesting at the end.
30:22SPEAKER- Weird mark?
30:23SPEAKER- Just like big old, across both cheeks,
30:26SPEAKERjust gigantic indentations in my, anyway.
30:29SPEAKER- Were you tired?
30:30SPEAKERI find that I get a little bit tired from breathing.
30:33SPEAKER- It was not so bad.
30:35SPEAKER- Okay, one of the planes was sweltering on the runway
30:38SPEAKERand boy, I sure was sweating inside that mask at that point.
30:41SPEAKER- Yeah, that's bad.
30:42SPEAKER- That was no good but the breathing was not a big,
30:45SPEAKERit's really the glasses fogging
30:46SPEAKERthat is the thing that just, oof.
30:49SPEAKER- Yeah, the glasses fogging.
30:50SPEAKERI got one of those, Gina got me one of those fog masks
30:53SPEAKERwhich fits around my nose real well
30:55SPEAKERso I don't fog the glasses and it's what I wear
30:57SPEAKERif I'm not like, if I have to go into a doctor's office
30:59SPEAKERor something, I wear an N95 usually
31:01SPEAKERor if I'm gonna be inside someplace for a long time
31:03SPEAKERbut usually I wear those reusables and they're pretty good.
31:05SPEAKER- Yeah.
31:07SPEAKERAnd then I think, was it on the patron episode we did last?
31:10SPEAKERWe went through my travel manifest of electronics.
31:13SPEAKER- You brought a whole like--
31:15SPEAKER- I don't, man.
31:16SPEAKER- You brought some stuff.
31:17SPEAKER- If I had brought a laptop, which I don't own yet
31:20SPEAKERbut will soon, that would have been like everything
31:23SPEAKERI could possibly travel with electronic wise.
31:26SPEAKER- You could take your case.
31:28SPEAKER- What, my PC case?
31:29SPEAKER- Yeah.
31:30SPEAKER- Oh, dude, I would never take that thing
31:31SPEAKERanywhere near an airplane.
31:32SPEAKER- Okay.
31:33SPEAKER- No, thank you.
31:35SPEAKERLet's see, Xbox series S, iPad Pro, Kindle, Mr.,
31:39SPEAKERthis blue Yeti, my Switch and then like 8,000 connectors
31:45SPEAKERand adapters and cables and--
31:46SPEAKER- Wait, did you plug the Yeti into the iPad?
31:49SPEAKER- No, there was a laptop on the other end.
31:51SPEAKERIt was not a great laptop
31:53SPEAKERbut it was barely enough to record on.
31:55SPEAKER- Okay.
31:56SPEAKER- But yes, I did blink.
31:58SPEAKER- Really?
31:59SPEAKER- Even the Mr., which I had in like two layers
32:01SPEAKERof bubble wrap, I thought for sure they would want
32:04SPEAKERto get that thing out and at least look at it
32:06SPEAKERand ask me what it was or something, but just nothing.
32:08SPEAKER- No questions.
32:09SPEAKER- I just sailed through.
32:10SPEAKERI was like both ends, like San Francisco
32:13SPEAKERand on the East Coast, like both times, just like,
32:16SPEAKERthey didn't care about this bespoke, like ramshackle
32:21SPEAKERlooking pile of circuit boards and wires.
32:24SPEAKERThat is the Mr., but man, they hate coffee.
32:27SPEAKER- What happened to your coffee?
32:28SPEAKERWait, did you try to take liquids through?
32:30SPEAKER- Not liquids, no, this was whole bean coffee.
32:32SPEAKER- Oh.
32:33SPEAKER- I was gifted a fairly small bag of coffee.
32:36SPEAKER- Oh yeah, well, they think that there's drugs.
32:37SPEAKER- That I brought back and this has happened
32:40SPEAKERevery single time I've ever flown
32:42SPEAKERwith any quantity of coffee.
32:43SPEAKER- Yeah.
32:44SPEAKER- It triggers a full bag, unpack and search.
32:46SPEAKER- Yep, and they do the wipey thing
32:48SPEAKERwith the mass spectrometer and all that.
32:50SPEAKER- Yes, the chemical swab happens on the coffee bag.
32:52SPEAKER- Yep.
32:53SPEAKER- What is it?
32:54SPEAKER- It's because people, dumbasses use coffee
32:56SPEAKERto hide the scent of other things, is my theory.
33:01SPEAKERI don't know if this is true or not.
33:02SPEAKERIf you work for the TSA and you can tell us
33:03SPEAKERwithout like blowing your security, I air quoted that stuff.
33:09SPEAKERI'd be curious to know, but that was my assumption.
33:11SPEAKER- That is the most plausible explanation
33:13SPEAKERI have actually heard.
33:14SPEAKER- When I came back from SCAA with a bunch of coffee in my bag
33:16SPEAKERI got, I thought I was going to get cavity search.
33:19SPEAKERThey were so anxious about me.
33:20SPEAKER- Yes, it was, yes, it's a little invasive.
33:23SPEAKERYou know, also though,
33:25SPEAKERI think I may have mentioned this before.
33:27SPEAKERThere was a period where I was wearing
33:28SPEAKERa lot of giant bomb merch when I flew.
33:30SPEAKER- Yeah.
33:31SPEAKER- Just 'cause, you know, we got a lot of hats
33:32SPEAKERand hoodies and stuff.
33:33SPEAKERIt's just good, it's good comfy travel gear.
33:35SPEAKERI was like, well, I got it.
33:35SPEAKERI might as well give it a shot.
33:37SPEAKERI sure was getting pulled for random search
33:39SPEAKERa lot in that period.
33:40SPEAKER- I had a laptop that had bomb, a giant bomb sticker on it
33:44SPEAKERthat I put another sticker over top of the giant.
33:46SPEAKERSo it just said bomb.
33:47SPEAKER- Oh, good.
33:48SPEAKER- And it was always really important
33:49SPEAKERthat you put that face down in the tray
33:51SPEAKERwhen you go through TSA.
33:52SPEAKER- Yes, I asked someone,
33:54SPEAKEReventually I asked someone I know
33:55SPEAKERwho works for the government, like,
33:56SPEAKER"Hey, do you think there's actually a correlation here?
33:58SPEAKERLike, come on, really?
33:59SPEAKERLike, it's a cartoon character.
34:01SPEAKERLike, these logos are so stylized
34:03SPEAKERthey can't possibly write."
34:04SPEAKERAnd this person said, "That's absolutely what's happening."
34:07SPEAKERSo stopped wearing the giant bomb stuff.
34:09SPEAKER- Don't wear the giant bomb stuff on the airplane.
34:11SPEAKERYou can't even wear giant bomb.
34:12SPEAKER- Look, you couldn't joke about having a bomb in the airport
34:16SPEAKERbut now you can't even joke about wearing a shirt
34:17SPEAKERthat says bomb on it.
34:20SPEAKER- Where will it end?
34:20SPEAKER- Americans taking our freedoms.
34:22SPEAKER(upbeat music)
34:29SPEAKER- I have a hunch.
34:30SPEAKER- Yeah.
34:31SPEAKER- A fear.
34:32SPEAKER- Uh-huh.
34:33SPEAKER- A prediction.
34:33SPEAKER- Yeah.
34:34SPEAKER- That perhaps the great American tradition
34:37SPEAKERof buying real Christmas trees is on the wane.
34:39SPEAKERWhat do you think?
34:41SPEAKER- Have you bought a real Christmas tree lately?
34:42SPEAKER- Well, never.
34:43SPEAKERI've never lived in a domicile that could accommodate one.
34:45SPEAKER- You could jam one into your house.
34:47SPEAKERI've had one in a smaller apartment than you have.
34:49SPEAKER- Look, you could put a lot of things in an apartment.
34:51SPEAKERIt doesn't mean it's a good idea.
34:52SPEAKER- Fair.
34:53SPEAKER- No, I've just never, but we always growing up,
34:56SPEAKERthat was just like, we had a farm.
34:59SPEAKERWell, okay, you probably-
35:01SPEAKER- We just went in the backyard and chops went down.
35:02SPEAKER- Yes.
35:04SPEAKERWait, you weren't actually growing those
35:05SPEAKERas Christmas trees, right?
35:06SPEAKERThey just happened to be there.
35:07SPEAKER- No, they were fucking planted to be Christmas trees.
35:09SPEAKERThey were planted in 1980 in December
35:11SPEAKERwhen you plant pine trees.
35:13SPEAKER- Did your dad really plan?
35:16SPEAKER- He planted 2,000 Christmas trees, Brad.
35:18SPEAKER- Years ahead?
35:18SPEAKER- 2,200 Christmas trees.
35:19SPEAKER- That's just, well, okay.
35:21SPEAKERBut that's probably gonna cover
35:22SPEAKERa human lifetime of Christmas trees.
35:24SPEAKER- He literally walked back there and was like,
35:26SPEAKERwhen we were planting them when I was five years old,
35:28SPEAKERhe said, "Look, these trees one day
35:30SPEAKERare gonna send you to college, Will."
35:32SPEAKER- Oh, man.
35:32SPEAKER- And he planted a bunch of shitty white pines
35:34SPEAKER'cause he didn't do the market research to find out
35:36SPEAKERthat nobody buys white pine Christmas trees
35:38SPEAKER'cause they make too big a mess and the needles are too long.
35:40SPEAKER- Wait, so you were stuck with a lifetime
35:42SPEAKERof substandard Christmas trees?
35:43SPEAKER- Well, now it's just a field full of trees.
35:45SPEAKERIt was kind of nice, but it was a two-part plan, right?
35:47SPEAKEROne is to sell some Christmas trees.
35:49SPEAKERPart two was get some trees in the back
35:51SPEAKERof this flat 15-acre field so that something breaks the wind
35:55SPEAKERthat comes down the valley toward the house.
35:56SPEAKER- Yeah, the big, a copes of trees,
35:59SPEAKERnot the worst thing to have around.
36:01SPEAKER- Yeah, but I mean, basically for five years
36:03SPEAKERwhen I was in middle school and high school,
36:05SPEAKERit ruined every single holiday season
36:08SPEAKERbecause people would just drive up, if there was a sign
36:11SPEAKERthat says, "Come to the Christmas tree farm,"
36:12SPEAKERpeople didn't care if it said eight to six.
36:15SPEAKERWe had somebody roll in at nine o'clock
36:16SPEAKERon Christmas Eve one night. - Oh, what?
36:18SPEAKER- And you're not gonna turn 'em away 'cause it's Christmas.
36:20SPEAKER- Yeah.
36:23SPEAKER- The circle of life on the Christmas tree farm,
36:25SPEAKERand I'm sure I've said this before,
36:26SPEAKERbut always people would come up and be like,
36:27SPEAKER"Man, I'd love to cut my own Christmas tree,"
36:29SPEAKERand then they'd get out there with the crappy saws
36:30SPEAKERwe provided them and they'd look at the tree
36:33SPEAKERand they'd get about a quarter of the way in
36:35SPEAKERand be like, "Man, this sucks.
36:36SPEAKER"Let's go get the boy."
36:38SPEAKER- So then guess who got to go out at eight o'clock at night
36:41SPEAKERand cut down the tree for the guy who didn't plan well?
36:43SPEAKER- Did you get out the good saw for that occasion?
36:46SPEAKER- You can't, but once you've given them the bad saw,
36:47SPEAKERyou're committed to the bad saw 'cause you can't be,
36:50SPEAKERbut plus, my parents didn't trust me with the good saw.
36:52SPEAKERI was kind of a dangerous kid, like, you know.
36:54SPEAKER- That's fair, look, I get it, I get it.
36:56SPEAKERI don't know, I just, I feel like everybody I know
36:58SPEAKERis going artificial these days, but there are,
37:00SPEAKERalso there are some nice artificial ones at this point.
37:02SPEAKER- So what do you think a real tree costs now?
37:05SPEAKERLike, you want a nice eight foot fir tree, go someplace,
37:08SPEAKERlike, go to a lot, pick it up, what do you think that costs?
37:12SPEAKERYou're muted, by the way.
37:15SPEAKER- Sorry, a lot of fruit clearing going on over here.
37:17SPEAKERAlso, I'd mentioned relatedly that the local tree nursery
37:22SPEAKERwhere I was staying for the last couple of weeks
37:24SPEAKERwas robbed of all of their Christmas trees
37:26SPEAKERwhile we were there.
37:27SPEAKER- Wow, dark times.
37:28SPEAKER- Somebody broke in in the middle of the night
37:30SPEAKERand literally took all their Christmas trees.
37:32SPEAKER- That is really messed up.
37:33SPEAKER- It's really messed up.
37:35SPEAKERGosh, a hundred bucks?
37:38SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, like a five, six footer in San Francisco
37:40SPEAKERstarted about 80 or a hundred bucks.
37:42SPEAKER- Okay, well, let's say San Francisco prices.
37:44SPEAKERI mean, I bet back home in the 80s,
37:46SPEAKERit was like 30 or something, right?
37:47SPEAKER- Well, so when we were selling the bad white pines,
37:49SPEAKERwe were selling them for, they started at $7 and 50 cents.
37:54SPEAKER- Wow, budget Christmas tree.
37:56SPEAKER- That was for a small one.
37:57SPEAKER- Okay.
37:58SPEAKER- Anything that didn't have a label on it,
38:00SPEAKERwe figured this out the hard way the first year,
38:01SPEAKERyou had to put the label on the cheap ones
38:03SPEAKERand leave the expensive ones unlabeled
38:06SPEAKER'cause otherwise they would just cut, take the label off
38:09SPEAKERand then it would be a cheap one.
38:11SPEAKER- Well, when I was a kid, the idea of a fake tree
38:13SPEAKERfelt like sacrilege, but I think I am a convert
38:18SPEAKERat this point.
38:19SPEAKER- I mean, there's a lot to be said about the,
38:20SPEAKERso we bought a pre-lit tree of like four years ago
38:23SPEAKERand there's a lot to be said about going to the garage,
38:25SPEAKERgetting the three pieces out, stacking them up on each other
38:27SPEAKERand then just all the bad work
38:30SPEAKERof lighting the Christmas tree being done.
38:31SPEAKER- Yeah, just hang some ornaments, you're good.
38:33SPEAKER- Yeah, and they look kind of close enough to real trees.
38:36SPEAKERWe usually buy some like real garland,
38:38SPEAKERso the house smells a little bit piney.
38:40SPEAKER- So this was kind of a brand new 2021 model, I should say.
38:46SPEAKERCouple of things, it has, it's LED lit,
38:49SPEAKERit's got warm white LEDs that I have to say
38:51SPEAKERare the closest to the real thing I've ever seen.
38:54SPEAKERI was actually shocked.
38:55SPEAKERLike I am an incandescent warm white holdout.
38:59SPEAKERLike I want-
39:00SPEAKER- Yeah, you use like real bulbs.
39:01SPEAKER- I want my Christmas lights looking
39:03SPEAKERas close to orange as possible.
39:05SPEAKER- Burn that tungsten, yeah.
39:06SPEAKER- That's right.
39:07SPEAKERBut these were like almost indistinguishable, I have to say.
39:10SPEAKERBut also they have all these modes
39:12SPEAKERwhere they also transition to colored lights.
39:15SPEAKER- Oh, that's an RGB and warm white?
39:17SPEAKER- Yes, they go back and forth.
39:18SPEAKERAnd it's got like 10 modes where there's like a nice,
39:20SPEAKERa slow fade from warm white to colored and back.
39:23SPEAKERThere's like blinking, twinkling modes.
39:26SPEAKERThere's a pastel mode in between
39:28SPEAKERthat's like halfway between the warm white and the colored.
39:30SPEAKERIt's like a, it's got some color,
39:32SPEAKERbut it's sort of washed out and brighter and stuff.
39:34SPEAKERIt's real like-
39:34SPEAKER- That sounds pretty good.
39:35SPEAKER- It's pretty good stuff.
39:36SPEAKERAnd that's like a basic one.
39:37SPEAKERLike I can't even imagine.
39:38SPEAKERThere have to be like wifi connected trees.
39:40SPEAKER- So I was gonna say, I looked before we did this show
39:42SPEAKER'cause the twinkly people,
39:44SPEAKERthe ones that make the RGB addressable lights.
39:47SPEAKERSo like you lay the strings out.
39:49SPEAKERWe've talked about them before.
39:49SPEAKERYou lay the strings out
39:50SPEAKERand then you point your phone camera at them
39:51SPEAKERand it fires off each one at a time.
39:53SPEAKERSo it knows where in 3D space the bulbs are.
39:56SPEAKER- It's gotta construct a 3D model, right?
39:57SPEAKER- Yeah.
39:59SPEAKERThey make a pre-lit tree now,
40:01SPEAKERwhich I'm interested in.
40:02SPEAKER'Cause I would like my tree to look like a candy cane
40:04SPEAKERand to twirl.
40:06SPEAKER- I bet that costs a pretty penny.
40:07SPEAKER- It's like 400 bucks.
40:09SPEAKERI was expecting it to be more, to be honest.
40:11SPEAKERLike I feel like a decent pre-lit
40:13SPEAKERthat's like seven, eight feet tall
40:15SPEAKERis probably gonna be 200 bucks.
40:16SPEAKER- I mean, much like your dad,
40:18SPEAKERyou're just investing in your future.
40:21SPEAKER- Yeah, that's my daughter's college tree.
40:24SPEAKER(upbeat music)
40:30SPEAKER- Okay, so this was the first time
40:32SPEAKERyou've been out of the house
40:33SPEAKERsince you migrated the nut server
40:35SPEAKERand started getting your redundant pie holes.
40:39SPEAKERHow'd it go?
40:40SPEAKER- I went on this giant campaign in late 2019
40:42SPEAKERto like, I never, I basically, at some point,
40:45SPEAKERI got tired of like going to the office
40:47SPEAKERand having forgotten the save game I needed to bring in.
40:49SPEAKER- Yeah.
40:50SPEAKER- For example, things like that, right?
40:52SPEAKERAnd at some point I was like, you know what?
40:53SPEAKERI don't ever want to be away from the house
40:55SPEAKERand not be able to get something digital
40:57SPEAKERfrom the house that I needed, right?
41:00SPEAKERSo I set up VPN on my router.
41:02SPEAKERI put everything on the UPS.
41:04SPEAKERI got the nut server very elaborately set up
41:06SPEAKERso that like nothing could lose power
41:08SPEAKERand not be able to either come back on automatically
41:10SPEAKERor even let me just turn it on remotely.
41:12SPEAKER- Oh, wait, you can wake on LAN or remote-
41:14SPEAKER- Yeah, so my NAS and my Windows PC
41:17SPEAKERare both wake on LAN-able.
41:20SPEAKERSo even if the power goes out and they're off off,
41:22SPEAKERI can still log into one of these pies,
41:24SPEAKERwhich comes back up automatically
41:25SPEAKERwhen the power comes back on.
41:26SPEAKER- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:27SPEAKER- And wake these machines up and get stuff.
41:30SPEAKER- Oh, that's pretty cool.
41:31SPEAKER- I can run a desktop in, I can SSH in,
41:32SPEAKERI can, you know, nothing was beyond my reach.
41:36SPEAKER- You've got access 24/7.
41:38SPEAKER- And then literally it was about,
41:40SPEAKERI think end of January, 2020,
41:42SPEAKERthat I finally perfected that whole setup
41:44SPEAKERand was done with it, quote unquote.
41:46SPEAKER- When you never needed to leave the house again.
41:48SPEAKER- And then instantly never needed to leave the house again.
41:51SPEAKER- Yeah.
41:52SPEAKER- I don't, there's not an interesting conclusion
41:54SPEAKERto this story other than to say that it all works.
41:57SPEAKER- Oh, that's good.
41:58SPEAKER- Like I was able to VPN, I turned everything off.
42:01SPEAKERThere's also some amount of debate around here now
42:04SPEAKERabout how much of the energy bill I'm responsible for.
42:07SPEAKERNow that I've-
42:08SPEAKER- In the building or in the house?
42:08SPEAKER- No, no, in the home, let's say.
42:10SPEAKER- Oh, I'm gonna say it's like 85, 90%.
42:12SPEAKER- Don't say that out loud.
42:14SPEAKER- What?
42:15SPEAKER- Uh-oh, I'm getting-
42:16SPEAKER- Look, look, you gotta own it, man.
42:17SPEAKER- I'm getting a look and like a certain, the stance,
42:20SPEAKERthe, you know, the kind of, the hips slightly out.
42:22SPEAKER- Oh, well, you got the sassy hips.
42:24SPEAKER- Oh no.
42:25SPEAKER- You're in trouble.
42:26SPEAKER- What do you really think is that high?
42:28SPEAKER- I mean, look, I know your partner reasonably well
42:32SPEAKERand I know what her electronics consumption
42:33SPEAKERis gonna be like.
42:34SPEAKER- Yeah, it's pretty low and I do have one to two computers
42:38SPEAKERand a couple of big monitors on a big chunk of the day.
42:41SPEAKER- You should, you know, you should get an electrical bicycle
42:45SPEAKERand just charge up all day.
42:48SPEAKERJust ride that thing constantly.
42:48SPEAKER- I should just be foot pumping under the desk.
42:50SPEAKER- Yeah, pump hard, go faster, Brad.
42:53SPEAKER- Keep the leg circulation going
42:54SPEAKERand generate some power at the same time.
42:56SPEAKER- So I was looking at logs last week.
42:58SPEAKER- Ooh.
42:59SPEAKER- To see what my open ports, what was hitting my open ports.
43:01SPEAKER- Oh no, oh no.
43:03SPEAKER- I saw a lot of real sketchy IPs
43:05SPEAKERjust pretty much hitting me constantly,
43:07SPEAKERlike the home assistant server, the Plex server, all that,
43:09SPEAKERjust nonstop party time.
43:12SPEAKER- Apparently it just happens these days.
43:14SPEAKER- I mean, I think it's always happened, but yeah.
43:16SPEAKER- It's actually reassuring to hear that that just happens
43:19SPEAKERbecause that means you're not a specific target, right?
43:22SPEAKER- I, you know, that's one way to look at it.
43:25SPEAKERThe other way to look at it is,
43:26SPEAKERI already had a VPN running on my home assistant box.
43:30SPEAKERSo why not just, you know, close all the open ports
43:35SPEAKERand move everything over to WireGuard?
43:38SPEAKER- That's the way to be, that is the way to be.
43:40SPEAKERDon't open ports, just VPN everything.
43:42SPEAKERWait, what were you, what is your home assistant box?
43:44SPEAKER- The home assistant box is a PI4.
43:46SPEAKER- Okay, and you were running, and you were, what,
43:49SPEAKERwhat were you running, like open VPN on there or something?
43:51SPEAKER- No. - Before WireGuard?
43:53SPEAKER- So I didn't, I had, on the NAS box,
43:57SPEAKERI had a jail that ran a VPN for a long time,
43:59SPEAKERlike an open VPN, but it was slow and kind of useless
44:01SPEAKERand was a pain in the ass to connect to.
44:03SPEAKER- I think open VPN is known to be pretty inefficient.
44:06SPEAKER- Yeah, like it wasn't, it worked,
44:08SPEAKERbut it was, it made everything worse.
44:11SPEAKERAnd whereas WireGuard, like I set up the WireGuard VPN
44:14SPEAKERbefore we went to Palm Desert and I could leave it,
44:18SPEAKERI left it on my phone a couple of times
44:20SPEAKERand didn't realize it was on until I like tried
44:21SPEAKERto turn on the TV or something with my phone.
44:24SPEAKERAnd like, it is very performant.
44:27SPEAKERAnd it was super easy to set up with the home assistant
44:29SPEAKER'cause they just downloaded a plugin
44:31SPEAKERfrom the community store that maintained an update.
44:33SPEAKER- I am fascinated by WireGuard and very excited about it.
44:37SPEAKERThe only reason I haven't done it is 'cause the VPN
44:39SPEAKERI've got set up on my edge router is extremely good enough.
44:42SPEAKERLike it's pretty good.
44:44SPEAKERI've got an L2TP IPsec VPN running on there,
44:48SPEAKERwhich has hardware acceleration.
44:50SPEAKERSo it's like, it is also quite fast, but.
44:52SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, the hardware acceleration is the big deal
44:54SPEAKERor having something that actually runs at performance speed.
44:57SPEAKER- Yeah, unfortunately, like the guy, what's his name?
45:00SPEAKERJason, I can't remember the author of WireGuard,
45:02SPEAKERbut like he ported it to edge routers,
45:05SPEAKERbut it does not have access
45:07SPEAKERto the hardware acceleration on there.
45:08SPEAKERBut apparently like he, the cryptography he chose
45:10SPEAKERfor WireGuard is just extremely low impact
45:13SPEAKERkind of across the board.
45:14SPEAKERSo it does just sort of run on anything.
45:16SPEAKERAnd I should probably just make myself do it.
45:18SPEAKERLike how was the setup?
45:19SPEAKERIs it fairly straightforward?
45:21SPEAKER- Like literally on Home Assistant,
45:22SPEAKERI just hit HACS and typed in WireGuard and pressed install.
45:27SPEAKERAnd then I generated a couple of keys
45:29SPEAKERand copied the key over to my phone.
45:31SPEAKERAnd that was it.
45:32SPEAKER- Oh, that sounds awesome.
45:33SPEAKER- And it's like, I have it on my desktop.
45:34SPEAKERI have my laptop, so I have it on my phone.
45:36SPEAKERNo time to set up.
45:37SPEAKER- I'm guessing the complexity that I've seen in the setup
45:40SPEAKERis more if you're trying to set up a bunch of specific rules
45:42SPEAKERfor different clients and stuff like that.
45:44SPEAKERLike I think it can get pretty fiddly
45:47SPEAKERif you really want to customize stuff.
45:48SPEAKER- Probably, I'm just like,
45:49SPEAKERsince it's basically just me using it
45:51SPEAKERand I think Gina has access too.
45:54SPEAKERI just gave everybody,
45:55SPEAKERlike everybody who's using it has full internal LAN access.
45:58SPEAKERI didn't use anything off for me to be lines or anything.
46:00SPEAKER- And so I think the encryption works basically
46:03SPEAKERlike SSH key pairs, right?
46:04SPEAKERLike it sounds like this is the same thing, right?
46:06SPEAKERYou just, so does that mean it's just kind of seamless
46:10SPEAKERto connect whenever you want to do it?
46:11SPEAKER- So when I want to connect on my phone,
46:15SPEAKERhere, I'll tell you.
46:17SPEAKERWhen I want to connect on my phone,
46:19SPEAKERI basically just, I just opened the WireGuard app
46:22SPEAKERand flipped the toggle to green.
46:25SPEAKEROr I can even hit flip the,
46:26SPEAKERthere's a VPN switch in settings
46:28SPEAKERand I think in control center now.
46:30SPEAKERSo you can flip it on there and then it flips over
46:32SPEAKERand you run everything through the home VPN,
46:34SPEAKERwhich is awesome.
46:35SPEAKER- And will it just kind of stay connected
46:36SPEAKERif you don't manually?
46:37SPEAKERI mean, does it lose connection if you just lift?
46:39SPEAKEROh my God.
46:40SPEAKER- Yeah.
46:41SPEAKER- Oh, I'm crying.
46:42SPEAKER- It's really, like I accidentally ran everything on my phone
46:46SPEAKERthrough the VPN for a couple of days
46:48SPEAKERwhen I was in Palm desert without even realizing it.
46:50SPEAKER- I should set up WireGuard, that sounds pretty good.
46:52SPEAKER- It was pretty nice.
46:54SPEAKERLike, and I'm sure there's better encryption or whatever,
46:57SPEAKERbut like for what I need,
46:58SPEAKERwhich is basically minimize exposure of the internal devices
47:02SPEAKERthat like realistically,
47:03SPEAKERI don't always update my home assistant server
47:06SPEAKERthe moment new updates come out because that's like,
47:08SPEAKERit's important that it stays up basically for our house
47:13SPEAKER'cause it controls all of our lights and stuff.
47:15SPEAKERSo I don't, I usually wait a couple of days
47:17SPEAKERto see if people are having problems
47:18SPEAKERbefore I flipped the switch.
47:20SPEAKERAnd occasionally there's exploits and stuff in there
47:23SPEAKERthat you want to get fixed, so.
47:25SPEAKER- My home assistant install is from June.
47:28SPEAKERI should probably think about.
47:30SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, the velocity of that project
47:31SPEAKERis really, really good.
47:32SPEAKERThey're always adding new stuff.
47:34SPEAKER- Their update cadence is crazy.
47:35SPEAKERI think it's one major new version a month
47:37SPEAKERand then a bunch of point updates to that.
47:39SPEAKER- Yeah, and like in the six months since June,
47:42SPEAKERthey've flipped the JavaScript Z-Wave implementation on
47:45SPEAKERwhich is much better implementation
47:47SPEAKERthan either of the other Z-Wave implementations they had.
47:50SPEAKERThey built a porting process.
47:51SPEAKERSo it just copied all of my stuff
47:53SPEAKERfrom the old Z-Wave implementation to the new one.
47:54SPEAKERAnd it just works, like it's really good.
47:57SPEAKERBut again, it's a little, it's high risk.
48:00SPEAKERAnd there's also three things to update
48:01SPEAKER'cause it's like, you have to update the OS,
48:03SPEAKERyou gotta update the supervisor,
48:04SPEAKERyou gotta update the app itself.
48:06SPEAKERSo anyway.
48:08SPEAKER- Hey, I don't know what to say here.
48:11SPEAKER- We rejoined her.
48:12SPEAKER- We rejoined her, it's time to get back out in the world
48:15SPEAKERand VPN it up, thanks for listening.
48:18SPEAKER- The best VPN is the one you have in your pocket.
48:21SPEAKER(upbeat music)
48:27SPEAKER- Look, I was a little unplugged for a variety of reasons
48:29SPEAKERover the last couple of weeks, but I saw that photo.
48:33SPEAKER- Which one?
48:34SPEAKER- I saw the-- - The dog?
48:35SPEAKER- No. - Oh.
48:37SPEAKER- The hashtag ad.
48:40SPEAKERWas that an ad?
48:41SPEAKERThat was not quite an ad.
48:42SPEAKER- They provided hardware and there was no money,
48:44SPEAKERthere's no money transaction.
48:46SPEAKERShout out to Steelcase, use offer code Will Smith,
48:49SPEAKERI'm gonna get 10% off of the Steelcase store.
48:51SPEAKER- Important to clear all that up.
48:53SPEAKERI saw the desk.
48:55SPEAKER- Yeah, so they sent me a solo desk.
48:56SPEAKERI've worked with them in the past on stuff
48:58SPEAKERand they were like, hey, do you need a standing desk?
48:59SPEAKERWe have this new one, you should check it out.
49:00SPEAKER- Yeah, that's cool of them,
49:02SPEAKERbut also I could not be more proud.
49:04SPEAKER- It was so clean, right?
49:05SPEAKER- I have seen your desk environment in the past
49:08SPEAKERnumerous times and boy, you've made some strides.
49:12SPEAKERGenerously, my normal desk strategy is described
49:14SPEAKERas lightly organized piles.
49:17SPEAKER- Yes, I can attest.
49:19SPEAKER- It's pretty good, it's maintaining pretty well so far.
49:21SPEAKERI got a bunch of those cable blocks things.
49:25SPEAKER- Cable blocks?
49:26SPEAKER- You know, these guys, I don't know if you can see 'em.
49:28SPEAKER- Oh, oh, the broadcast, oh, there it is.
49:30SPEAKERIf you hold it right in front of your face,
49:32SPEAKERI can't see it. - Yeah, right in front
49:33SPEAKERof my face, it's like--
49:34SPEAKER- Oh, that looks like something from The Matrix,
49:35SPEAKERlike from the scene where Keanu gets pulled out of the pod
49:38SPEAKERand all the hoses, ugh.
49:40SPEAKER- Well, it's basically the right thickness
49:42SPEAKERto stick on the back edge of the desk
49:44SPEAKERand then you can kind of weave the cables through 'em
49:46SPEAKERso they lock in place.
49:47SPEAKER- Ooh, that sounds pretty good.
49:49SPEAKER- They're pretty good.
49:50SPEAKERBut the problem is I quickly have too many cables
49:52SPEAKER'cause I have like speakers and I have my audio interface,
49:54SPEAKERwhich I'll probably move underneath at some point,
49:56SPEAKERbut not right now.
49:57SPEAKER- We should back up real quick.
49:58SPEAKERI don't think we actually described the photo
49:59SPEAKERfor people who haven't seen it.
50:00SPEAKERIt's like the tidiest I have ever seen your desk
50:02SPEAKERby a factor of about a thousand.
50:03SPEAKERLike there's kind of not much of anything there,
50:06SPEAKERwhich is exactly how I like to keep a desk.
50:08SPEAKER- How do you do that, man?
50:09SPEAKERWhat do you do with your stuff?
50:11SPEAKER- Diligence, I guess.
50:12SPEAKERAnd it's like a constant anxiety about clutter.
50:17SPEAKER- Okay.
50:18SPEAKER- I don't know.
50:19SPEAKER- I need to get some of that.
50:21SPEAKEROr maybe not, I don't know.
50:22SPEAKER- I have the affliction where the less messy stuff is,
50:26SPEAKERthe better I can relax.
50:28SPEAKER- Okay.
50:29SPEAKER- Which requires a whole lot of maintenance around the house.
50:30SPEAKER- Okay, I mean, I can see that.
50:31SPEAKER- The more tidy things are,
50:33SPEAKERthe more it's like a hotel room, the happier I am.
50:36SPEAKER- Well, so, okay.
50:37SPEAKERSo I figured out how to use the cable blocks things
50:39SPEAKERto make the cables go straight back.
50:41SPEAKERBut I'm really jealous of the people
50:42SPEAKERthat have just like one monitor and a keyboard
50:44SPEAKERand a mouse that are wireless.
50:45SPEAKER- Yeah.
50:46SPEAKER- And nothing else on their desks.
50:47SPEAKER- So I'm almost there.
50:48SPEAKERI've got a wireless keyboard and my mouse is still corded.
50:50SPEAKERBut that other than that, that's it.
50:52SPEAKERI got the one mouse cord across the desk
50:54SPEAKERand that's otherwise it's empty desk space,
50:56SPEAKERwhich probably invites the question,
50:58SPEAKERwhat's the point of a desk if you don't put things on it?
51:00SPEAKER- I mean, that is true.
51:02SPEAKERI'm excited, I have space over here now
51:03SPEAKERthat I can do like Lego and stuff though.
51:04SPEAKERI'm pretty stoked about that.
51:05SPEAKER- Hey, if you needed to write something,
51:07SPEAKERyou can just slap that sheet of paper right down there
51:09SPEAKERand write.
51:10SPEAKER- I could also just use a keyboard like a fucking,
51:12SPEAKERlike it's the 21st century and I'm not some sort of animal.
51:15SPEAKER- I guess.
51:17SPEAKERLet's see, so what are you working with?
51:18SPEAKERYou got speaker cables?
51:19SPEAKER- I got speaker cables,
51:20SPEAKERbut they're like quarter inch 'cause they're monitors.
51:23SPEAKER- So my solution there is I just put the little cubes
51:26SPEAKERlike right back at the edge of the desk
51:28SPEAKERkind of under the monitor.
51:28SPEAKERSo the cords for those just kind of disappear over the side?
51:32SPEAKER- They're like bookshelf speakers.
51:33SPEAKERThey're pretty good size.
51:35SPEAKERThey're like yay high and yay wide.
51:37SPEAKER- Oh, you should wall mount those.
51:39SPEAKER- Maybe that's the right thing to do.
51:40SPEAKERThey're pretty heavy though.
51:42SPEAKER- I mean, you own the house, you can do whatever you want.
51:44SPEAKER- That's there, that is true.
51:46SPEAKERI can do whatever I want.
51:47SPEAKER- That is the joy, that is the joy.
51:49SPEAKERAs someone who took on an impromptu plumbing project
51:53SPEAKERwhile I was gone, I really started to recognize
51:56SPEAKERthe value of just being able to do whatever you want.
51:59SPEAKER- Well, I mean, look, there's pros and cons
52:00SPEAKER'cause it also means you're fully responsible
52:02SPEAKERfor all the stupid thing you did goes badly.
52:04SPEAKER- So it's ironically, I was doing some downstairs plumbing
52:08SPEAKERand while I was doing that, like literally right above
52:11SPEAKERwhere I was doing that plumbing,
52:14SPEAKERa gigantic water spot started forming on the drop ceiling.
52:17SPEAKER- Oh.
52:18SPEAKER- That had nothing to do with what I was doing,
52:19SPEAKERbut it turns out the upstairs shower
52:21SPEAKERthat is not frequently used.
52:24SPEAKER- Oh, a little leaky.
52:25SPEAKER- There may be a significant leak.
52:28SPEAKER- Oh boy, that's bad.
52:30SPEAKERAnytime you cut out ceilings, you don't want that.
52:32SPEAKER- Yes, it was just like, it was a fun lesson about the ups
52:34SPEAKERand downs of home ownership, all right there.
52:37SPEAKER- Yeah, I mean, somebody, a friend of mine
52:39SPEAKERbought a house a few weeks ago and I was like,
52:40SPEAKERyeah, just make sure you have like 10 or 20K in the bank
52:42SPEAKERat any time from whatever horrible nightmare
52:44SPEAKERis gonna happen to you and you'll be fine.
52:45SPEAKER- You know what else happened in the basement
52:46SPEAKERis that there was a gopher problem.
52:48SPEAKER- In the basement?
52:49SPEAKER- No, no, no, so this is a multi-step thing.
52:52SPEAKER- Oh.
52:53SPEAKER- There was a gopher problem just around.
52:55SPEAKER- Oh, and they dug out tunnels around the edge of the house?
52:57SPEAKER- So apparently some tunnels were dug right under the house,
53:00SPEAKERwhich was not a problem until an enormous amount of rain fell
53:03SPEAKERand flooded those tunnels.
53:04SPEAKER- Yeah.
53:05SPEAKER- And now you can see in the laminate flooring,
53:08SPEAKERthe nice little shape of the tunnel that-
53:11SPEAKER- Ah, gophers are such a-holes.
53:13SPEAKER- Extremely raised up right in the shape of the tunnel
53:16SPEAKERthat they dug and then flooded.
53:17SPEAKER- Oh, that's bad.
53:18SPEAKER- Yeah, home ownership.
53:20SPEAKER- It's not great, but it's, I mean, I don't know,
53:21SPEAKERmaybe it's better than the alternative.
53:23SPEAKER- Yes, look, I can tell you from 10 years,
53:26SPEAKERtoo many of renting that it's better than the alternative.
53:28SPEAKER- Well, there we go.
53:30SPEAKER- But okay, so you just use anxiety
53:33SPEAKERto keep your desk tidy?
53:34SPEAKER- Yes, it's a good and bad way, speaking of ups and downs.
53:37SPEAKER- I was gonna say, I think I'm gonna live
53:40SPEAKERwith my messy to desk then.
53:42SPEAKER- Hey, man, whatever floats your boat.
53:44SPEAKER- Yeah, that's fine.
53:45SPEAKER- Different tidiness, different tidiness strokes
53:47SPEAKERfor different tidy folks.
53:49SPEAKER- I do like the cable tray in the back with all of the,
53:52SPEAKERI put all those power strips,
53:53SPEAKERI stuck them up on the underneath.
53:55SPEAKER- Oh, dude, yes, I've been living that,
53:57SPEAKERlike there's nothing under my desk.
53:58SPEAKERI can just run the vacuum cleaner right under there.
54:00SPEAKERThere are no cables on the floor.
54:01SPEAKER- That's really nice.
54:02SPEAKERDo you have your computer on your desk
54:03SPEAKERor is it on the floor?
54:05SPEAKER- Computer, the computer has a floor appliance
54:07SPEAKERas far as I'm concerned.
54:08SPEAKER- Yeah, that's my feeling as well.
54:09SPEAKERPeople don't like that.
54:10SPEAKERI didn't realize it.
54:11SPEAKER- I don't know what's up with that.
54:12SPEAKERMine is way too big.
54:13SPEAKERI've got like a big fractal.
54:14SPEAKERIt's literally too big to put on this desk.
54:17SPEAKERThere's no room for it.
54:18SPEAKER- Yeah, if you had my desk, I could hang it underneath,
54:21SPEAKERbut I have two computers and I think it would put me
54:23SPEAKERover the weight limit for the ups and downs.
54:24SPEAKER- Yeah, the only thing I could do
54:26SPEAKERis if I have one of those super cool, tidy,
54:28SPEAKERlittle ultra integrated mini ITXs
54:30SPEAKERthat are getting really popular.
54:31SPEAKERYou know what I'm talking about?
54:32SPEAKERLike basically the size of a shoebox
54:33SPEAKERfor an entire like good gaming PC.
54:35SPEAKERI could see that being on the desk.
54:37SPEAKER- Well, but then you can't have capture cards.
54:38SPEAKERYou'd have to use external capture devices.
54:40SPEAKER- That's true.
54:41SPEAKER- And they suck.
54:42SPEAKER- That's a lot of dongles at that point.
54:44SPEAKERI don't, yeah, I don't know why people get so worked up
54:46SPEAKERabout the floor computer.
54:47SPEAKER- I think it's dust.
54:49SPEAKER- Look, #tidydesklife, you're worth it.
54:52SPEAKER(laughing)
54:53SPEAKER(upbeat music)
55:00SPEAKER- Well, Brad.
55:01SPEAKER- Yes?
55:02SPEAKER- We've reached the end.
55:03SPEAKER- We have.
55:04SPEAKER- Was that, have we formed a cube?
55:06SPEAKER- Look, I feel like the cube of cold opens,
55:08SPEAKERthe prophecy has been fulfilled.
55:10SPEAKER- How many cold opens makes a cube?
55:13SPEAKER- This time it was,
55:15SPEAKER- What is the IEEE standardization?
55:19SPEAKER- Nine, boy, we were one too many.
55:21SPEAKER- Oh.
55:22SPEAKER- If we had eight, it would be a perfect cube.
55:25SPEAKER- Hey, look.
55:26SPEAKER- 'Cause I guess a cube has six sides.
55:27SPEAKER- Jumbo sized cube is slick, it's the holidays.
55:29SPEAKER- Yeah, 'tis the season.
55:30SPEAKER- We're giving people a little extra.
55:33SPEAKER- If you enjoyed this, please let us know.
55:34SPEAKERIf you didn't, let us know that too.
55:35SPEAKERWe're open to suggestions.
55:37SPEAKER- Yeah, sure, people seem to like the last cold open.
55:39SPEAKER- Yeah, the cube of cold opens.
55:41SPEAKER- Yes.
55:42SPEAKER- This is the part of the show where we thank our patrons.
55:44SPEAKER- Yeah, thank you, patrons.
55:45SPEAKER- Thank you, patrons.
55:47SPEAKERAs always, if you would like to support
55:49SPEAKERBrad and Will Made at TechPod,
55:50SPEAKERa 100% listener-supported show, you can
55:53SPEAKERby going to patreon.com/techpod.
55:55SPEAKERAgain, that's patreon.com/techpod.
55:58SPEAKERAnd for as little as $2 a month,
56:00SPEAKERyou can gain access to the fabulous TechPod Discord,
56:04SPEAKERwhich is full of beautiful nerds
56:06SPEAKERtalking about interesting and occasionally horrifying things
56:09SPEAKERon the moment-to-moment throughout the day.
56:12SPEAKER- Hey, look, when I saw somewhere between 60 and 70 IPs
56:16SPEAKERtrying to access the VPN on my router,
56:18SPEAKERI went straight to that network channel
56:20SPEAKERand I was like, "Uh," and they were like,
56:21SPEAKER"Don't worry, it happens to everybody.
56:22SPEAKER"It's totally normal, you're fine."
56:24SPEAKERLike, it's great to have a resource like that.
56:27SPEAKER- What if it was them, Brad?
56:29SPEAKER- Oh no.
56:29SPEAKER- What if they're trying to hack you?
56:32SPEAKER- Are you saying the attempted penetration
56:33SPEAKERis coming from inside the house?
56:34SPEAKER- What if it's coming from inside the Discord?
56:36SPEAKER- We have to get out of here.
56:38SPEAKER- But yeah, if you wanna support the show,
56:40SPEAKERyou can go to patreon.com/checkpod.
56:41SPEAKERIf you don't, that's fine too, tell some friends.
56:43SPEAKERWe love when people tell friends
56:44SPEAKERbecause that's how you find out about new podcasts,
56:47SPEAKERit turns out.
56:48SPEAKER- Yeah.
56:49SPEAKER- But as always, a very special thank you
56:51SPEAKERto our executive producer, to your patrons,
56:52SPEAKERincluding Paddle Creek Games, Makers of Fractured Veil,
56:55SPEAKERAndrew Selosky, #bunnycrimes,
56:59SPEAKERJacob Chappell, Joel Krauska, Twinkle Twinkie,
57:02SPEAKERDavid Allen, and James Kamik.
57:04SPEAKERThank you all so, so much.
57:05SPEAKER- Yep, thank you to everyone and a happy holidays.
57:08SPEAKERIs this, gosh.
57:09SPEAKER- Is this the last one?
57:10SPEAKEROh yeah, it'll be after Christmas next time.
57:12SPEAKER- I guess you're right, wow.
57:13SPEAKERYeah, look at that. - 'Tis the season.
57:15SPEAKERI gotta bring you some Nog.
57:16SPEAKER- Oh wow, aw, that's very kind of you.
57:17SPEAKER- Hey, you're on the list.
57:19SPEAKER- We were thinking, like I'd said,
57:20SPEAKERwe were thinking about trying our hand.
57:22SPEAKER- I mean, I'm only gonna bring you a quart,
57:24SPEAKERso if you want more than that, you gotta get on it.
57:26SPEAKER- Oh man, now we're back into the bowls
57:28SPEAKERof ice cream territory.
57:30SPEAKER- Look, it's best not to think about it
57:32SPEAKERas drinking a bowl of ice cream with some broken heads.
57:34SPEAKERIt's best to just think of it as festive holly, holly,
57:37SPEAKERholly, holly days here, cheers.
57:39SPEAKER- It's best to embrace the strategy of look,
57:42SPEAKERthis is only once a year, it's probably fun.
57:44SPEAKER- Yeah, and like, if you, if this carries over
57:47SPEAKERinto some lifestyle thing where you're melting
57:48SPEAKERyour ice cream and just drinking that in a cup
57:50SPEAKERlater on, like April, then we have to have a talk.
57:53SPEAKERBoth will intervene then.
57:54SPEAKERBut for right now, enjoy yourself with a little bit.
57:56SPEAKER- There's a lot of weeks between now and then.
57:58SPEAKER- I'll just be sitting here, I just wanna see a video
58:00SPEAKERof you drinking a bottle of wine so I can appreciate it.
58:03SPEAKER- I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.
58:06SPEAKER- You'll get there.
58:07SPEAKERSee y'all next week, bye everybody.
